Ninots, figures to be burnt during fallas festival, Valencia, Spain

Make your way southbound along the beautiful eastern coastline of Spain on your way from Barcelona to Madrid. This seven-day adventure will be a food and culture lover's dream, with stops in the birthplace of paella, a trip to a cava winery in the heart of the Catalonian wine region, visits to ancient oceanside amphitheatres, behind-the-scenes looks at the construction of festival statues, and more tapas than you can stomach! Explore Spanish beaches on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea and indulge in locally made churros. There’s a little something for everyone in this Spanish crusade.

Trip overview

  • Travel from Barcelona to Madrid along the eastern coast of Spain, taking in Tarragona’s Roman amphitheatre and perhaps an agua de Valencia in Valencia along the way.
  • Learn about the history and artistry of the unique Fallas festival of Valencia by meeting a professional artist in their workshop to find out how they construct these intricately detailed statues, often of enormous sizes.
  • Enjoy glasses of locally produced cava – a Spanish sparkling wine produced in the Catalonian wine region. Sip on samples while strolling through a vineyard and enjoy a tapas-style lunch of cured meats, cheeses, and other delectable dishes.
  • Look out over the Mediterranean Sea and the sprawling ‘City in the Sea’ from the walls of Peniscola Castle. Built on the highest point in the city, it juts out into the ocean on its clifftop position, giving you an uninterrupted view of the city below.
  • Savour a Spanish favourite at a Madrid insititution – cinnamon and sugar-dusted churros with velvety chocolate sauce from a churreria that has over a century of expertise.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Casa Caridad. Donations help them provide basic needs such as food and shelter for people in need in Valencia. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones.
  • Summer temperatures can be extreme in this region (over 40C/104F). It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • This trip doesn't spend much time in Barcelona or Madrid so we recommend extending your trip to enjoy these cities to their fullest. Please speak to your booking agent about adding additional nights of accommodation to your booking.

Hola! Welcome to Spain. Whether you’re here for the architecture, the food, or the football team, there’s something for everyone in Barcelona. This evening, you’ll be meeting up with your leader and group for a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, there’s plenty to do – check out the incredible architecture by Antoni Gaudí (making an essential stop at Sagrada Familia), wander La Rambla, Barcelona’s most famous street, or get up close to Pablo Picasso’s early works at the Picasso Museum. After your welcome meeting, take a trip to a local bar for an aperitivo – the perfect opportunity to get to know your group. Why not keep the good times rolling and grab an optional dinner together, cheersing to what promises to be an excellent week ahead.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Barcelona - Welcome aperitivo

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

Head south to the charming Catalan town of Vilafranca del Penedes. Today you’ll be stopping for lunch at a vineyard, where you’ll feast on cured meats, cheeses, and other local favourites. Wander through the vines and enjoy a tasting of cava (a Spanish sparkling wine). After lunch, continue into town where your leader will take you on a walk around the streets. As the wine capital of Catalonia, there’s plenty of delicious wines to sample – just check in with your leader for the best streetside bars to sample another glass or two of Spanish vino. Take a walk through the Gothic district and visit the Santa Maria Basilica. Hitting the road again, you’ll reach your home for the night – Tarragona. Why not gather your group and head out for dinner, finding the best cassola de romesco (a signature dish traditionally made of fresh seafood cooked in romesco sauce).

Waking up in Tarragona, step out with your leader for an orientation walk through this beautiful coastal town. Overlooking the ocean, the amphitheatre was built to hold up to 14,000 spectators and was host to rowdy gladiator fights. The rest of the day is your own. Why not explore more of this beautiful beachside town’s Roman history or wander down to El Serrallo – Tarragona’s port district, where you’ll find some of Spain’s best seafood. Stroll through the medieval city centre and up to the crowning glory of the Catedral de Tarragona, where you can find both Romanesque and Gothic features, the remains of an ancient Roman temple, or book yourself in for a rooftop tour to get the best view of Tarragona in town. Travel onwards to Peniscola where your leader will take you on an orientation walk of this ‘City in the Sea.’ Head up to the stunning coastal cliffs where you’ll find the Peniscola Castle. Built on the highest point of the city by the Knights Templar, the castle and its grounds jut out into the ocean and overlook the city below. Birthplace of paella, home to Gothic architecture, quirky galleries and museums, and more festivals than you can keep track of – there is no shortage of fun to get up to in the coastal city of Valencia. This morning, you and your group will make your way to the Fallas Museum, where you’ll learn all about the traditional Fallas Festival. Each year between the 15th and 19th of March intricate sculptures (many of them enormous) are erected around the town. On the last day, these sculptures are set on fire to mark the end of the festival and welcome spring, with only two chosen to be saved and placed in the museum. After checking out the museum, you’ll have a private tour of a workshop where you can watch a fallero artist designing and building their sculptures for the next festival. After the museum, you’ll be treated to a traditional paella lunch. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the city.

The rest of the day is yours so be sure to ask your leader how to tailor your afternoon to your interests. You might like to visit the Golden Triangle of Art – three world-renowned museums that are home to some of the world’s most valuable collections of art, jump on the Teleferico and see the city from the world's most horizontal cable car, or wander through an ancient Egyptian temple at Templo de Debod. Today you will explore another city in the surroundings of Madrid in an 8-hour full-day tour. Just 50 minutes outside Madrid there is the medieval capital of Spain: Toledo, which should not be missed. Although it is now a place for tourists to come and see, five hundred years ago it was the bustling city center of Spain for centuries.

Toledo1

Given the honor of a World Heritage city, Toledo is as important as any other place in Spain and equally beautiful. The old city walls border Toledo and its winding, stone roads and picturesque buildings.

Toledo has been populated for thousands of years by almost every major empire to conquer what is now central Europe. Because of this, there are remains of each dynasty sprinkled throughout the city. When you are in this city you are truly in the middle of history.

The city is famous for being the main place of co-existence for Jews, Christians, and Muslims from seven hundred A.D. until fourteen hundred A.D. Many different religious monuments and buildings stood next to one another and people were free to practice whatever religion they wanted to. During the 16th Century, it was home to the Spanish monarchy and was the capital city.

The first thing you see when entering Toledo is the Puerta Bisagra, the main entrance to the fortified city. When you pass through this gate you are passing through fifteen hundred years of history!

Alcazar

Alcazar is a spectacular castle, but was once a fortress and because of that has been rebuilt numerous times due to conflict and fires. There are many old cathedrals, mosques, synagogues, and monasteries all over the city. Other highlights include an assortment of interesting museums, a walk along the river Tajo, and if you are lucky some amazing Fiestas.

After this excursion, the bus will drive you back to the hotel and you can enjoy your free time during the rest of the day. Of course, there are also some options, which can be added if you wish:

1. Visit to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

Real Madrid is famous for being the richest football club in Spain. Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is the home to Real Madrid and has been since 1947. It is one of the largest football stadiums in the world holding over eighty-five thousand people at one time.

2. Visit to the Prado Museum

There is no better place in the world to see Spanish art than the Museo del Prado. It is the largest and most well-known art museum in Spain, which was originally built in the 1700s in the Neo-Classical style. Some of the paintings found here date back over nine hundred years ago and are still on display today.

Prado Museum 2

The Prado is considered one of the most impressive art galleries and museums in the world, ranked seventh in Europe, and is the most visited gallery in Europe besides those in London and Paris.

In the evening you can enjoy your free time and explore Madrid on your own. You can use it to do some shopping in the famous street Gran Via, take a delicious cocktail in an insider bar, or walk along the streets – just enjoy the charm of this city.

After the refreshment at the buffet breakfast on your Madrid and Barcelona 6 days and 5 nights journey, the day unfolds with a half-day trip (5 hours) to the incredible city surrounding Madrid: Segovia, renowned for its Alcazar and captivating medieval charm.

The excursion, a significant part of your Madrid and Barcelona 6 days and 5 nights experience, kickstarts with a tour to Segovia, one of the nine prominent towns constituting the state of Castile and Leon. Earning the honor of being named a UNESCO World Heritage City in 1985, Segovia boasts two particularly breathtaking landmarks.

Segovia

Firstly, there’s the Aqueduct. Dating back to approximately 100 A.D., this masterpiece of Roman engineering stands as a testament to ancient architectural prowess. As an integral part of the Madrid and Barcelona 6-days 5-nights itinerary, the Aqueduct, with its 818-meter span and over twenty-five thousand granite blocks, offers a picturesque view from various city corners, though it predominantly graces the Plaza del Azoguejo.

Secondly, the Madrid and Barcelona 6-days 5-nights adventure introduces travelers to the Segovia Cathedral, Spain’s last gothic masterpiece. Towering over the city with its 90-meter high bell tower, this over four-century-old marvel was once Spain’s tallest structure, further amplifying the charm of Segovia.

While these architectural wonders are the highlights of the Madrid and Barcelona Barcelona 6-days 5-nights tour, Segovia’s offerings don’t end there. The Alcazar, a millennia-old royal palace, accompanied by its stunning gardens, adds to the city’s allure. Museums, arches, churches, and numerous other attractions ensure that this part of the Madrid and Barcelona Barcelona 6-days 5-nights journey remains etched in memory.

After soaking in Segovia’s magnificence, the bus escorts you back to your hotel, allowing for some relaxation before your onward journey. As a continuation of your Madrid and Barcelona 6 days and 5 nights experience, the afternoon sees you boarding a flight or high-speed train bound for Barcelona. Upon reaching this coastal gem, a private shuttle transfers you to your 3* Hotel.

The concluding part of this segment of your Madrid and Barcelona 6-days 5-nights adventure invites you to explore Barcelona at your own pace. Savor tapas, stroll through the historic old town, or simply unwind, gearing up for the adventures of the coming days.

The day begins with a buffet breakfast in your hotel. Afterward, our guide and bus will pick you up for a full-day excursion to the highlights of Barcelona.

Barcelona 6-days 5-nights

The awe-inspiring architecture of Antoni Gaudi will be our starting point. Admire the UNESCO heritage buildings of Casa Mila and Casa Batllo in the picturesque Eixample quarter before we approach Barcelona’s most famous landmark, the cathedral of Sagrada Familia: this still unfinished gem of modernism architecture was begun in 1882 and the completion is planned for 2026, the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoní Gaudí.

We will continue to the upper city and the slopes of the Sierra de Collserola mountain range to reach Parc Güell. Your guide will take you for a short walk through this fairy-tale garden with its beautiful mosaics and amazing views up to the Mediterranean Sea.

Sierra De Collserola Mountain

Take a short break on its terrace for a picture of the famous curved benches.

After this refreshing break, we will continue with the bus to the Olympic facilities on Montjuic. This mountain between the historic center and the port has already been part of sports history for decades as Barcelona’s old Formula 1 track. For the 1992 Olympic Games, it was reformed as the central venue and 80% of the competitions took place over there. We will visit the beautiful plaza and the Olympic stadium before reaching the castle on the top of the mountain with its 360-degree views of Barcelona and its shoreline.

Making our way down from Montjuic our next stop will be the ancient heart of Barcelona. Step deep into history and explore the foundations of Barcelona as a Roman colony 2000 years ago. Our guide will tell you the rise and fall of the ruling empires over the centuries on a walking tour from the world-famous Las Ramblas through the narrow lanes of the Gothic quarter. On the way to Barcelona’s greatest medieval icon, the cathedral of La Seu you will also explore the indoors of the Roman Augustus’ Temple, the palatine chapel of Santa Àgata, and the cloister of the cathedral.

Cathedral Of La Seu Spain

Now you will hop on your bus again to pass the old port and the former fishermen’s district of Barceloneta to reach the lively beach promenade. We will then enter modern Barcelona with the Olympic Port and the futuristic Forum area. On our way back to the hotel the tour will finish with the oddly shaped Torre Agbar, the icon of modern Barcelona in the new business district.

Side Of Torre Glories Agbar Tower 1

After this extensive tour get some rest in the hotel or take a look at Barcelona’s extensive shopping opportunities along fashionable Passeig de Gracia or discover hidden boutiques in the Born district.

Start into the day with another great breakfast. Today you will go on a trip to Girona and Figueres in northern Catalonia.

It will be a one-hour drive from Barcelona to the historic city of Girona. Founded by the Romans, it was a melting pot of cultures for centuries. Along winding medieval streets our guide will take you up the hill from the riverbank to the cathedral. On the way down we will pass through the narrow lanes of the Jewish quarter, walk along the Roman wall that surrounds the old town, and discover the Arab baths.

Afterward, you will have some spare time for shopping, a coffee break or just wandering around the picturesque old town on your own.

Another half an hour on the bus and we will reach Figueres, the home and workplace of world-famous surrealist, painter, and sculptor Salvador Dali.

Theatre Museum Of Dali 1

We will get in touch with his fascinating world and visit the Theatre Museum of Dali. Almost completely created by Dalí himself, it is undoubtedly the best and largest collection of surrealism in the world. He wanted visitors to see his massive collection as a whole work, and for this reason, he refused to have his works placed in any order. Step in and get lost in this surrealistic world of fantasy mixed with architecture, paintings, and sculptures.

After this exciting day, the bus will bring you back to the hotel around 18.00 hrs.

In the evening you will enjoy a delicious farewell dinner in a Spanish restaurant. The dinner will include a three-course meal, wine water, and coffee.

According to the departure of your cruise ship, we will pick you up from the hotel and bring you to your cruise terminal. With a lot of impressions, you will be hopefully already thinking about when you will return to our beautiful city. Optional: If your cruise check-in will only open late in the afternoon, we can add another half-day tour in Barcelona.

When do Real Madrid and Barcelona play in the USA in 2024? The dates of their preseason tour

El Clásico will be coming to the United States for the third year in succession in 2024, with Real Madrid taking on Barcelona at MetLife Stadium in New York on 3 August as part of the LaLiga giants’ respective pre-season tours of the United States.

Both teams will play three matches stateside in the Soccer Champions Tour 2024 as they gear up for the 2024/25 season, at the end of which Madrid will return to the US for the new incarnation of the FIFA Club World Cup (15 June to 23 July 2025). Barça haven’t qualified for the tournament, largely as a result of their recent struggles in the Champions League.

El Clásico will be the middle game of the clubs’ three-match tours, which will begin right at the end of July and finish at the end of the first week of August.

Barcelona’s 2024 US tour: opponents, dates, venues...

Barcelona will be the first of the two in action, facing Manchester City - and former manager Pep Guardiola - at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday 30 July . It will be the first time they have ever played in the city.

The Catalans then head north to New Jersey for a “friendly” Clásico at MetLife Stadium on Saturday 3 August , before finishing up against AC Milan at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday 6 August.

Barcelona's 2024 pre-season US tour fixtures

  • Tuesday 30 July: Barcelona - Manchester City , Camping World Stadium (Orlando, Florida)
  • Saturday 3 August: Barcelona - Real Madrid , MetLife Stadium (New Jersey/New York)
  • Tuesday 6 August: Barcelona - AC Milan , M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore, Maryland)

Real Madrid’s 2024 US tour: opponents, dates, venues...

Real Madrid’s pre-season trip kicks off a day later on Wednesday 31 July , when they will also play against Milan , this time at Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.

Following their match against Barcelona three days later , they will round off their stateside stay by taking on Chelsea at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on Tuesday 6 August.

Real Madrid's 2024 pre-season US tour fixtures

Wednesday 31 July: Real Madrid - AC Milan , Soldier Field Stadium (Chicago, Illinois)

Saturday 3 August: Real Madrid - Barcelona , MetLife Stadium (New Jersey/New York)

Tuesday 6 August: Real Madrid - Chelsea , Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, North Carolina)

How can I get tickets to watch Real Madrid and Barcelona in the United States?

For anyone who is interested in attending any of the games , the Soccer Champions Tour website should be your first port of call, although there are also some tickets for sale on ticketing platforms including Ticketmaster and StubHub .

How many times have Real Madrid and Barcelona played in the US? What happened?

Real Madrid and Barcelona have played each other on three occasions in the United States, with the Catalans winning each time.

In 2017 in Miami , Lionel Messi was among the scorers in a 3-2 victory at Hard Rock Stadium, although Los Blancos gained immediate revenge by winning both legs of the Spanish Super Cup just a couple of weeks later.

Las Vegas hosted the second Clásico on US soil five years later , with Raphinha scoring the only goal at Allegiant Stadium. Barça recorded a much more emphatic victory last summer , but their 3-0 triumph at AT&T Stadium in Dallas doesn’t appear to have been an especially good omen as the end of this season approaches.

The fourth stateside Clásico will take place at MetLife Stadium in New York in August, one of three matches both teams will play in the US.

Where to watch El Clasico: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona live stream, TV channel, odds, start time, what to know

Fresh of a champions league week where real madrid advanced and barcelona went hope it's two teams heading opposite ways.

untitled-design-2024-04-20t212314-210.png

Real Madrid can't officially win La Liga in Sunday's El Clasico against  Barcelona  on Sunday, but they can all but secure the title after Barca won it last season. Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League while Los Blancos bested Manchester City to advance to the last four of the tournament. If Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid emerge with a victory, there is a good chance that they'll win La Liga by double digits over Barcelona for the second time in the past three years, while if Barcelona wins, it doesn't particularly change anything.

That's the state of these two teams. It shows how far the rivalry has gone as this season will see Xavi Hernandez depart Barcelona at the end of the season, the club likely not secure a trophy for the first time since 2019-20, and plenty of holes in the roster to fill but with limited funds to fill them. Meanwhile in Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti has seen his contract extended, they're closing in on another La Liga title and could also be adding Kylian Mbappe during the summer.

With the ability to pursue almost any player that they'd like not only has this period seen the gap widen between Barcelona and Real Madrid but the stage is set for it to only get wider. Clasico's are supposed to be affairs full of drama, a time where the fate of the league hangs in the balance, but this one doesn't have any of that. If Barcelona can't figure out their managerial situation for next season and see more improvement from their young players, there will be a mountain to climb.

Mbappe knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League was already a poetic moment, full of foreshadowing of what could be coming if he denies Barcelona more silverware with Madrid. The gap between the two clubs hasn't been this drastic since the early 2000's and for fans around the world, hopefully, it isn't this wide for much longer. Things are better with stakes in a Clasico which is a beautiful rivalry showcasing the best of what world soccer has to offer. Gone are the days of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo squaring off as giants of the soccer world but to move things forward, Barcelona needs to figure out who their next era will be built around.

With Vinicius Junior , Jude Bellingham , Rodrygo , and Endrick on the way, Madrid are poised for success even without Mbappe while Barcelona's future is much bleaker. Their hopes are on the shoulders of 16-year-old Lamine Yamal who while he seems like a generational talent at his current age, what if things don't pan out? Not being able to spend money means a stronger reliance on the academy and that can produce inconsistent results growing the gap between the clubs. This Clasico showcases just how important the upcoming summer is for the balance of La Liga moving forward.

Rafael Nadal ’s run at the Madrid Open came to a screeching halt after he was outgunned in a straight-sets loss by Jiri Lehecka.

The Czech, seeded 30th, fired off 33 winners to his opponent’s 14 and broke Nadal’s serve in either set to claim a 7-5 6-4 victory in the last 16, dashing the hopes of a partisan crowd at the Caja Magica.

Nadal’s first defeat to a player ranked outside the world’s top 20 on his beloved clay marks his final appearance in the Spanish capital, where he has won the tournament a record five times.

“I had the opportunity to play one more time here on this court,” said Nadal afterwards. “It was a very special week for me, very positive and very emotional.”

Nadal had a gloomy outlook about his physical condition before competing in Madrid and even cast doubt on appearing at the French Open but he can take some solace from his run to the fourth round.

He thrashed 16-year-old Darwin Blanch for the loss of one game then avenged his defeat in Barcelona to 10th seed Alex de Minaur before winning a titanic three-hour tussle against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin.

He has not looked at his best all tournament and that was the case here too, with his serve once again lacking firepower, but there was nothing to separate him from Lehecka in the first 10 games.

But Lehecka broke to love in the 11th before serving out to take a one-set lead, and Nadal again dropped serve at the start of the second.

While Nadal attempted to use his looping top-spin forehand to claw his way back into the match, he was unable to impose himself on the serve of Lehecka, who faced and saved just one break point.

Lehecka’s victory in a little more than two hours was greeted in near-silence before the crowd at Manolo Santana Stadium rose to acclaim Nadal in a post-match presentation ceremony.

As well as being handed a special trophy, five banners above the stands were unfurled – signifying the years he won the tournament – with the words “Gracias Rafa”.

“All I can say is thank you to everyone that has helped me in my career – it hasn’t finished yet,” added Nadal, who is expected to head to Rome to compete in the Italian Open which starts next week.

Bellingham hands Real Madrid comeback win over Barcelona

Xavi rages at no-goal decision in clasico.

FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez says the decision not to award Barcelona a goal in el clasico is something to be ashamed of.

LaLiga leaders Real Madrid 's pursuit of a record-extending 36th Spanish title gathered momentum after Jude Bellingham scored a goal in added time to secure a 3-2 comeback win over defending champions  Barcelona on Sunday.

Madrid twice fought back from a goal down before Bellingham smashed in the winner at the far post from about six yards out to beat Barcelona for a fourth successive time. The result left second-placed Barca 11 points adrift of the leaders with six games left.

"What a great night for being a Real Madrid fan, it's incredible," Luka Modric told Real Madrid TV. "It's a win that edges us closer to the title, it's what we want. It was a great game, we never stopped believing.

"We were behind twice but kept fighting, playing well, pressing and in the end we came back time and time again."

Barca took the lead in the sixth minute when Andreas Christensen headed in following a corner after Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin failed to clear the cross from his 6-yard box.

Vinicius Junior equalised 12 minutes later from the penalty spot after Lucas Vazquez was fouled inside the box.

Barcelona complained as the match was paused for several minutes as the VAR tried to determine whether a Lamine Yamal effort had crossed the goal line, but it couldn't find a clear camera angle and the decision not to award a goal stood.

LaLiga is the only major European league not to use goal-line technology.

Madrid dominated the second half but missed several chances and allowed substitute Fermin Lopez to give the visitors the lead again in the 69th minute from a rebound. The hosts hit back with a Vazquez volley four minutes later.

Carlo Ancelotti's side kept pushing for another goal and their perseverance paid off in added time, when Vazquez raced down the right channel and crossed to Bellingham, who blasted the winner into the roof of the net.

"He arrived at the right moment," Ancelotti said of the Bellingham goal. "He made a big effort, working hard, he scored with his last bit of energy. It had been a while that he hadn't scored. He scored the goal and let's hope it's fundamental in winning the league."

The Clasico came four days after Madrid eliminated Manchester City on penalties in England to advance to the Champions League semifinals. Barcelona had been eliminated a day earlier by Paris Saint-Germain after a loss at home, leaving the league as their only title opportunity for the season.

"We've done very well. We couldn't have done any better. I don't think many thought we could do it," Ancelotti said. "So far it's been a spectacular season with all the problems we've had, physical above all. So far we've done spectacularly. Did Barcelona win the game? We'll have to see, I think honestly a draw might have been fair, for us a draw wouldn't have been bad.

"When we made it 2-2, they tried to play with a lot of players up front so we had some straightforward transitions and that's how we made it 3-2. Barcelona went for it and they lost their balance."

Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin , the hero for Madrid in the shootout against City, miscalculated a cross into the area on Barcelona's first goal and failed to fully clear a ball in front of the goal on the second.

It was another tough loss for Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, who announced in February that he was stepping down at the end of a difficult season.

"It's hard to find words for it. It's an accumulation of many things. We have not been at the level of competitiveness that we should have been. And that cost us," Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen said.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong left the field on a stretcher late in the first half after hurting his right leg in a clash with Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde .

FC Barcelona's La Liga title is on the line when it heads to the Bernabeu to face bitter rivals Real ... [+] Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday.

Trailing its bitter rivals by eight points, FC Barcelona has the La Liga title on the line when it heads to the Bernabeu to face Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday.

The Catalans are believed to be at a low point after being knocked out of the Champions League quarterfinals in brutal fashion by Paris Saint-Germain midweek.

According to Xavi Hernandez, however, the team "trained much better" on Friday and was "still in high spirits after the PSG game".

"May the anger and disappointment of the other day help us to play very good football," he demanded at his pre-match press conference, where he admitted to making errors against the Ligue 1 outfit .

"But up front, we'll have a very strong and reinforced Real Madrid."

"Madrid will press in the first minutes of each half. We have to be very brave with the ball. It's the perfect setting to show personality and everything we've worked on. The first few minutes will be key," the outgoing head coach also explained.

As for his line up, Xavi will field pretty much the same side that took an early 1-0 lead against PSG, and then buckled to lose 4-1 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate after Ronald Araujo was red-carded.

The Uruguayan will start in central defense partnered by 17-year-old Pau Cubarsi, as Joao Cancelo and Jules Kounde are the left and right backs.

One major change in the midfield is that Pedri is dropped, meaning Andreas Christensen can return as pivot behind a duo of Ilkay Gundogan and Frenkie de Jong.

Up top, it is a front line of Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha from right to left.

With PSG out of the way, and the La Liga title Barca won in spring last year effectively on the line, Xavi is under no illusion that "for us, it's the most important game of the season".

"We have to win. If we win we would be five points behind. That's the scenario we'd like. We're going to try to compete, and win at the Bernabeu," he vowed.

Xavi consoles Raphinha after the defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona must beat Real Madrid in Xavi’s last clásico to keep season alive

Having been knocked out of the Champions League, failure to win at the Bernabéu will end all hopes of a trophy

O n Tuesday, some Barcelona fans mistakenly threw stones and bottles at their own bus as it made its way into Montjuïc. The huge club badge and massive “Barça” written on the side were not enough of a clue. In fairness, they might not have seen that through the crowd and all the smoke. As for the metaphor, the self-inflicted damage, that was harder to miss.

By the end of the night, Barcelona were out of the Champions League , failing to reach the semi-final for a sixth successive season. Against Paris Saint-Germain they had competed, which genuinely was something, and Xavi Hernández was busy telling the referee, Istvan Kovacs, he had been a “disaster”.

But if the official got blamed for the result, ultimately Barcelona had conceded four goals. At least in part, the club that created a crisis so bad they forced out the greatest player they ever had and invented the palanca , selling assets to survive, had done it to themselves.

Xavi was sent off and so was the centre-back Ronald Araújo after only half an hour. PSG’s third goal came from the penalty spot after a challenge that João Cancelo, who committed the foul, admitted was “infantile”.

Xavi was furious about Araújo’s red, but the goalkeeper Marc André ter Stegen watched it during the post-game interview and had to admit that, yes, it was a sending off. Ilkay Gündogan went further, questioning the wisdom of making the challenge in the first place. Going a man down that early killed them, he said.

Defeated 4-1 by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final and 4-2 by Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey quarter-final and now out of Europe having conceded four more at home to PSG, Barcelona were left with only the league. And that too is on edge: on Sunday they travel to the Santiago Bernabéu, eight points behind their great rivals with seven games left. Lose and it is done, draw and it is done. Win and it is probably done, too. They are, as the Spanish line inspired by the Inquisition has it, clinging to a burning nail, desperately holding on.

The surprise perhaps is that there is a chance at all. In January, Xavi resigned after a 5-3 defeat against Villarreal, describing the role of coach as “cruel and unpleasant”, but insisted on continuing to the end of the season. It was a formula that the president, Joan Laporta, said he accepted only “because it’s Xavi”; it is also, unexpectedly, a formula that has worked. Since then, Barcelona are unbeaten in 10 games in the league, picking up 26 of the last 30 points. In Europe, they found a way past Napoli and won in Paris .

Xavi has repeatedly said that it was his decision to walk that changed everything, even if he has not explained exactly why. If that line appears in every press conference, so for the last few weeks has the question about him changing his mind and staying. President, vice-president and sporting director have all talked about convincing him to, not least because finding a replacement has not been easy. Besides, things were going well. Until Tuesday night, when Barcelona were beaten, that Barcelona again, and suddenly it all felt final again. Lose the clásico and it really will be.

The following night, Real Madrid did what Real Madrid do, the contrast cruel in beating Manchester City in a penalty shootout : if there is a vulnerability about Barcelona, there’s an almost inexplicable invincibility to their rivals. Somehow, they always overcome, as if the problems that sink others barely touch them, a survival instinct no one else has, a capacity to resist; they are the T-1000 hanging on your back bumper. Holding on to that burning nail seems to come more naturally to them.

They have been without Thibaut Courtois all season, without Éder Militão too. David Alaba suffered a ligament tear. Karim Benzema departed, a year ahead of schedule. Jude Bellingham wears heavy strapping on his shoulder, Vinícius Júnior tore a thigh.

Against City, they faced 38 shots and somehow prevailed. There, Andriy Lunin, the back-up goalkeeper they were sufficiently unsure of to make the emergency signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga, made two saves and Lucas Vázquez, Nacho Fernández and Antonio Rüdiger scored their penalties. None of them were expected to be starters this season. Who starts on Sunday is another matter: this is a tired team, Carlo Ancelotti admits, though it refuses to crack. In the last clásico , they were outplayed for an hour or so, and then Bellingham appeared out of nowhere.

Vinícius Júnior leads Real Madrid’s celebrations at the Etihad Stadium.

If their issues are physical, Barcelona’s are more emotional. This is a clásico conditioned by Europe – not least because of an awareness that midweek mattered more, the league meeting arriving late on the agenda – and by the fallout from it. Cancelo told ESPN that he had received threats after his foul in midweek, that he had been unable to sleep. After Gündogan’s comments it was hard to avoid the feeling that faultlines had opened, just as Madrid appear steeled by it all.

Gündogan had spoken out after the first clásico this season, expressing his disappointment that the 2-1 defeat to Madrid had not hurt more. “I would like more anger in the dressing room,” he insisted. This time, he suggested that Araújo would have been better letting Bradley Barcola go. His wife got involved, insisting that her husband’s attitude is that of a “treble winner”. Araújo said he preferred not to respond publicly but in effect did so when he justified it with the existence of “dressing room values and codes” he would not break.

Suddenly, it was everywhere, overshadowing everything. “It’s more of a noise outside than inside; Gündogan wasn’t trying to single anyone out,” the captain, Sergi Roberto, insisted. “He didn’t mean any harm and Araújo has seen that: we have spoken about it and the case is close,” Jules Koundé said. “We have to turn the page, make sure that the anger, frustration and impotence of the other day is used in a favour; in front of us is a strong Real Madrid , given a morale boost by the week that’s just gone,” Xavi said, while Gündogan insisted they had “looked each other in the eye”. The damage, though, was done.
