Best cruises from Florida: Our top 9 trips from the Sunshine State

Megan duBois

Cruises from Florida are the most popular options for travelers who wish to sail from the United States. It was only this year that Miami was dethroned as the busiest cruise port in the world — replaced by rival Florida home port, Port Canaveral.

Not only do cruises from Florida allow you to see some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas, but they also allow travelers to experience some of the biggest and best cruise ships sailing right now. The largest cruise ship afloat, Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas, sails from Port Canaveral; family-friendly rival Disney Wish, the newest Disney cruise ship in a decade, also home ports in Florida.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Families planning multigenerational getaways, couples seeking child-free vacations and groups of friends looking to have a good time can all find their perfect ship and itinerary departing from one of Florida's six departure ports.

To give you a taste of the diversity of options available from the Sunshine State, here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

Wonder of the Seas to the Western Caribbean

best cruise deals out of florida

Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean's flagship and the largest cruise ship in the world, departs weekly from Port Canaveral (the cruise port closest to Orlando). The ship sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries, stopping at tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

While the islands offer plenty of fun in the sun, the ship itself is filled with tons of family-friendly activities. Siblings or parents and kids can race each other to the bottom of the twin waterslides, named Typhoon and Cyclone. If you prefer to stay dry, hop into the Ultimate Abyss tunnel slide, where riders will glide down 10 stories of darkness before bottoming out on the ship's Boardwalk.

Kids ages 6 months to 17 years old have their own hangouts with dedicated programming supervised by fun counselors. While the kids play with new friends, adults can veg out in the glass-encased Solarium, relaxing on padded loungers or in a bubbling hot tub.

When it's time to come together for a meal, you'll please all palates at The Mason Jar , one of Royal Caribbean's newest restaurants that highlights Southern comfort food. The menu teems with tasty dishes like fried chicken, gumbo and po'boys that will leave you completely satisfied. Brunch here comes with a side of live country music.

Freedom of the Seas to the Bahamas

best cruise deals out of florida

Cruisers who are loyal to Royal Caribbean or those who want to test the waters with the brand without the commitment of a seven-night sailing can enjoy short, three-night sailings on Freedom of the Seas out of Miami.

The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise. At this private Bahamian beach resort, cruisers can ride the slides at Thrill Water Park, rent a beachside cabana for a mix of shade and sun, or float about in a sheltered lagoon. A barbecue lunch is included, and passengers can utilize their onboard drink package.

The 4,635-passenger ship provides fun around every corner. Challenge one another to a round of minigolf, show off your skills on the FlowRider surf simulator or test your muscle on the rock climbing wall. Entertainment on Freedom of the Seas ranges from Royal Caribbean's iconic ice skating shows to live music in the pub. Pool parties, outdoor movies and laser tag are also included with your cruise fare.

With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings.

No cruise is complete without great food, and this ship offers 11 different dining venues highlighting such cuisines as Italian, Mexican and Japanese.

Carnival Elation to the Bahamas

best cruise deals out of florida

Carnival Elation is unique because it's the only ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville. Its four- and five-day sailings to the Bahamas stop at Nassau and a second destination that varies. Choose from cruises to Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays — the latter two are private beaches operated by the Carnival Corporation.

The 2,606-passenger cruise ship is one of Carnival Cruise Line 's smallest and oldest ships. Aboard the intimate vessel allows you to get to know the crew and other cruisers. Popular hangouts include Carnival's beloved Alchemy Bar, where you can order cocktails at a vintage pharmacy-themed bar.

For outdoor dining, head to Guy's Burger Joint, created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Order a loaded burger and perfectly golden-brown fries, then head to the Lido Deck near the pool for great people-watching.

Entertainment on this small ship is still plentiful. Cruisers can splash around at WaterWorks, the family-friendly water playground, or head up to the adults-only Serenity Retreat for a quieter experience. The Punchliner Comedy Club hosts a variety of comedians that will have kids and adults laughing throughout the night. Catch a live production in the main theater or sing along with the pianist at the popular Piano Bar.

Carnival Mardi Gras to the Eastern Caribbean

best cruise deals out of florida

If you'd prefer to sample one of Carnival's newest and largest ships, you can sail from Port Canaveral on the line's Mardi Gras . Its Eastern Caribbean sailings visit island destinations like St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. Mardi Gras' six- to eight-night itineraries provide a good mix of sea days at the start and end of the sailings.

The impressive ship is known for its party atmosphere, which is highlighted by an onboard zone themed to New Orleans' French Quarter. Here, passengers will find Emeril's Bistro 1396, an homage to NOLA's cuisine developed in partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Don't miss the Brass Magnolia and the Fortune Teller bars, which start hopping when the sun goes down.

The Ultimate Playground on the ship's top deck is where adrenaline junkies and sports lovers will want to hang out. You'll get all the thrills with a ride on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, or take a lap around the elevated ropes course. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, minigolf and a full-size basketball court await.

Disney Magic to the Bahamas

best cruise deals out of florida

When the summer of 2024 rolls around, Disney Magic will set sail from Disney Cruise Line 's newest home port in Florida, Fort Lauderdale. The ship's shorter three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries include a visit to Nassau and either Castaway Cay, Disney's stunning private island, or Lighthouse Point, Disney's newest island destination . Longer five-night sailings include a stop at both private beaches or a double dip at Castaway Cay, along with a day at Nassau.

Disney Magic is among Disney's smaller ships, but fans love it for its intimate size and fewer crowds. Beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome you aboard with hugs and photo ops throughout your sailing.

Guests rotate each night among the ship's three dining rooms, including Rapunzel's Royal Table — inspired by Disney's animated "Tangled." There's also Animator's Palate, an homage to Disney's animation studios. You'll have the same servers at all restaurants, so they get to know your family and your dining preferences. At night the Walt Disney Theater features Broadway-caliber shows, like "Tangled: The Musical."

Families looking for some time apart will love that Disney has an included kids club where younger cruisers can enjoy fun activities under the watchful eye of the ship's youth staff. The Oceaneer Club features themed areas like Andy's Room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's home at Pixie Hollow. Kids can also take superhero lessons from Thor. The Oceaneer Lab offers baking classes inspired by "Ratatouille" and sessions where kids learn how to draw their favorite Disney characters.

Adults can use their free time to savor a meal at the adults-only Italian restaurant, Palo, or kick back in the ship's multiple bars and live music venues.

Prefer to sail on a newer Disney ship? Check out Disney Wish , with three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau.

Holland America's Rotterdam to the Southern Caribbean

best cruise deals out of florida

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam 's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West.

With just 2,668 guests onboard, Rotterdam is homey and charming with a touch of luxury. The ship doubles down on live music; a live band plays all the rock hits at the Rolling Stone Rock Room, while an eight-piece band gets everyone on their feet when they play R&B favorites at B.B. King's Blues Club. For some daytime activity, the competition is on at the ship's pickleball courts , where cruisers can take lessons or play in tournaments against their shipmates.

Expect impeccable dining at specialty restaurants like Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French-inspired restaurant from Holland America's master chef Rudi Sodamin; Canaletto, an Italian bistro offering all of the classics; and Tamarind, where diners can sample regional dishes from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. For daytime snacks, don't miss the Dutch pancake bites called poffertjes or the French fries with peanut dipping sauce.

Norwegian Encore to the Eastern Caribbean

best cruise deals out of florida

If you're looking for a weeklong cruise out of Miami, consider sailing on Norwegian Encore to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and Tortola. Each island offers spectacular sandy beaches that give way to sparkling blue waters, plus options for water sports, museum visits and hikes to the top of lush mountaintops.

The itinerary also includes a stop at Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There you can enjoy a relaxing beach day, where all you have to worry about is getting back to the ship on time from the tender dock.

On board the ship, zip around the Encore Speedway in a go-kart, play laser tag in an Atlantis-themed arena, splash around the AquaPark or experience virtual reality games inside the Galaxy Pavilion. For a calmer diversion, purchase a pass to the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only retreat with lounge chairs, umbrellas and specialty food and drinks. The pass is good for the entire cruise, so you can come and go as you please.

There's a wide range of dining options, including complimentary and extra-charge restaurants. Belly up to the Local Bar and Grill for classic pub dishes and cocktails on tap. If you're willing to pay extra for a meal, Q Texas Smokehouse is worth a stop. The a la carte restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue and all the classic sides. After dinner service, the restaurant turns into a country dance club with a live band and an open dance floor.

Celebrity Apex to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

best cruise deals out of florida

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex sets sail from Fort Lauderdale to some of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. From November 2023 through April 2024, Apex will offer weeklong sailings to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. Two sea days give you time to relax and have fun on the ship.

What makes this itinerary special is that it features later all-aboard times in San Juan and St. Maarten, allowing guests to see the islands as they come alive in the sunset glow.

Celebrity Apex is part of Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class of ships, with standout features like high-end design and modern touches. One of Apex's highlights is the Magic Carpet, a suspended lounge that hangs off the side of the ship. When it's positioned by the pool deck, you can stop in to sip cocktails; when it's at water level, it serves as a platform for easy boarding of tender boats.

There are lots of chic spots to chill with your travel companions. Savor some kebabs or a flatbread pizza among live plants in the ship's Rooftop Garden, then watch the sun sink into the sea at the aptly named Sunset Bar. Submerge yourself in a martini-shaped hot tub out on the pool deck or enjoy a dip on a rainy day in the covered adults-only Solarium.

With 29 different food and beverage options on Apex, cruisers will never be bored at meal times. Specialty dining includes Le Grand Bistro, themed after a traditional Parisian boulangerie-patisserie, and the Eden Restaurant, with its tasting menu of international dishes.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food, stick with the ship's four themed main dining rooms and the Mast Grill, which serves juicy burgers and hearty salads. The Oceanview Cafe serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch offerings, while dinner features a rotating menu with international flair.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady to Key West and Bimini

best cruise deals out of florida

Step aboard the adults-only Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady for a Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise to Key West, Florida and Bimini, Bahamas, from Miami. The four-night sailings are great for cruisers who want to try out Virgin Voyages or those who want a long weekend away.

You can book an excursion in Key West, but it's easy to explore on your own. Take a ride on the hop-on, hop-off bus or saunter down Duval Street and around Old Town. For local fare, swing by D.J.'s Clam Shack for fresh seafood or Garbo's Grill for Korean barbecue beef tacos. Both were showcased on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Treat yourself to key lime pie on a stick before you head back to the ship.

In Bimini, head straight to Virgin's exclusive beach resort, the Beach Club at Bimini . Here, you can enjoy floating in the pool, Caribbean-themed lunch and games on the beach.

Scarlet Lady is a playground for grownups. The Redemption Spa is a relaxing retreat where you can book a block of time to enjoy the thermal suite or try out a couples massage. For a permanent reminder of your cruise, get a tattoo at Squid Ink . The ship is known for its creative theatrical performances and rollicking nightlife. Head to The Manor for comedy and drag shows, plus late-night revelry. Don't miss Virgin's hyped-up Scarlet Night, which culminates in an epic pool party.

All of the table-service restaurants on Scarlet Lady are included in your cruise fare. You won't find a traditional main dining room. To secure your preferred mealtimes, book dinner reservations through the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you can. Restaurants that are not to be missed include Extra Virgin for Italian fare; The Wake, the fine-dining steakhouse; and Gunbae, the Korean barbecue restaurant where you start your meal with a drinking game.

CRUISES FROM FLORIDA

MEET THE FUNSHINE STATE

BASK IN THE FUN ON FLORIDA CRUISES

People all around the world know Florida because there are few places that do “fun and sun” with quite the flair that this place does. And for all its deserved fame as a vacation destination, the Sunshine State is equally skilled at launching great vacations to other places. So imagine leaving from Florida and cruising to convenient, nearby locations like the Caribbean, The Bahamas… while we’re on the subject, you can even cruise to Mexico from Florida! See what we’re getting at? But if you’re cruising from Florida, 2024 or beyond, make sure to set aside some time to explore what’s good on land.

  • Jacksonville

Port Canaveral

Cruise from spots across florida.

With some of the best cruises from Florida, The Magic City is definitely a top homeport pick! But it’s more than Miami’s proximity to the Caribbean and Bahamas — this is simply a unique destination all its own. There are so many sides to Miami, and you can spend time exploring the city’s varied neighborhoods before or after you cruise. There’s party-ready South Beach, Coral Gables with its Mediterranean style, the spicy Little Havana, and even world-renowned Wynwood — center of street art.

What does it mean to be in the center of everything? When it comes to exploring Florida fun before or after a cruise, if you’re thinking Port Canaveral… you’re right on the mark! For starters, your cruise kicks off on the state’s iconic Space Coast, home to Kennedy Space Center and within reach of the Orlando area’s fun-packed theme parks. This all makes this a great place to launch yours! But Port Canaveral has natural thrills too: an entire coastline of sugary-sand beaches and protected islands for native wildlife.

Tampa’s the kind of place that rewards visitors who take a little time to explore the city before or after they cruise. Try it and you’ll see! Not far from the Gulf Coast you’ll find great shopping, the state aquarium and plenty of local art museums. But that’s before we even get around to talking about the historically Cuban district of Ybor City, with its lively 7th Avenue neighborhood that’s best explored after sundown for Latin-style nightlife.

JACKSONVILLE

Jacksonville is said to be the best of both worlds, with beachfront and urban vistas to explore. But make sure to add a third kind of scenery — a Carnival cruise — to your visit! Before or after you cruise you can enjoy the dining and shopping energy of Jacksonville’s downtown, but know that nature is nearby with the Southbank Riverwalk of the St. Johns River. And if you want to go full-on nature, you’ve got wildlife parks galore and miles of sandy beaches.

Florida ports serve as the embarkation point for more cruises than anywhere else in the world. The best cruises from Florida—particularly out of Miami, Port Everglades (in Fort Lauderdale), and Port Canaveral (near Orlando)—make it easy to visit islands throughout the Caribbean as well as destinations further abroad.

In addition to serving as the launching point for numerous blissful sailings, Florida provides cruise passengers with the option of tacking on a few days at the beach or some time at the theme parks, making it an idyllic place to start or end your next cruise.

While the Caribbean is by far the most popular destination for cruises from Florida, sailings through the Panama Canal (typically in spring and fall) and longer winter sailings such as multimonth world cruises and itineraries to South America also embark from Florida ports. Some routes travel from Florida up the Eastern Seaboard to Canada and across the Atlantic as cruise ships reposition for the spring and summer to the Mediterranean.

Here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

1. Western Caribbean with Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Suggested itinerary: 10-day “Heavenly Sunsets” itinerary in February 2025, from $6,299 per person (fares include unlimited excursions and round-trip airfare)

On Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ recently launched “world’s most luxurious” ship, the 746-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur , passengers cruise in high style—and with such extravagant accoutrements as a 1,600-piece art collection—from Miami to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. On the all-balcony, all-suite ship, check out the Picassos and the enameled, 18-karat white-gold Fabergé egg created especially for the ship (the only permanent Fabergé egg at sea)—that is, when you’re not indulging in included fine dining and beverages at venues such as a steak house, a French restaurant, and an Asian-fusion outpost. The onboard Culinary Arts Kitchen provides hands-on classes from pro chefs. During a port visit in Port Royal, Jamaica, a Bob Marley Cultural Experience shore excursion visits the famed musician’s former home and the museum’s One Love Café (there’s bound to be an uptick in interest fueled by a new movie about Bob Marley, One Love , that debuts this month).

2. Circumnavigate South America with Cunard

Passengers will have the chance to visit Santiago de Chile during Cunard’s epic 52-night South America sailing out of Fort Lauderdale.

Suggested itinerary: 52-night “South America Discovery” cruise in January 2025, from $9,405 per person

Next January, Cunard Line’s 2,061-passenger Queen Victoria will spend nearly two months circumnavigating South America round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, for a true “wow” factor cruise. The sailing will bring guests to Caribbean countries, including Turks and Caicos, Barbados, Aruba, and the Bahamas, in between visits to several ports in Brazil (with an overnight in Rio); Uruguay; Argentina (with an overnight in Buenos Aires); around Cape Horn, Chile (including views of the PIO X and Amalia glaciers); Peru (with an overnight in Callao near Lima); Ecuador; and through the Panama Canal. On board the ship, dress up for a glitzy gala complete with a live big band in the Queens Room ballroom, play darts in the Golden Lion Pub, and sip the cruise line’s extensive cocktail selection at the Gin & Fizz bar in the dramatic multilevel Grand Lobby.

3. Immersive Caribbean cruise with Azamara

Suggested itinerary: 14-night “Eastern Caribbean Voyage” in November 2024, from $2,423 per person

Spend Thanksgiving on Azamara Cruises’ more intimate 680-passenger Azamara Onward while visiting 10 Caribbean countries in two weeks. The comprehensive sweep through the islands embarks in Miami and sails to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, and the British Virgin Islands (Virgin Gorda). That’s a lot of countries to check off your lifetime list. The Azamara roster also has shorter and longer sailings. Embrace the ship’s social, country club–like atmosphere, and indulge in treats such as a classic martini and filet mignon at the Prime C steak house. On shore, book excursions to slide and swim the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua while in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, and see the creative side of St. Maarten on an island art tour. Complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations highlight local culture, such as a Bajan carnival event featuring a traditional drumming Tuk band on Barbados.

4. Eco-friendly Central America sailing with HX Expeditions

Suggested itinerary: 11-night “Tropical Waters and Remote Island Communities in the Caribbean” cruise in September 2024, from $3,909 per person

HX Expeditions (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) is sailing its 500-passenger Roald Amundsen from Miami to Colon, Panama, visiting remote island communities along the way. As you explore Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, and Panama, you’ll spend time in UNESCO-protected nature areas such as the Belize Barrier Reef, Colombia’s Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, where you may spot iguanas and electric blue lizards, and Panama’s Coiba National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. There’s also the opportunity to snorkel around Panama’s Zapatilla Island, which was featured on the TV show Survivor . The ship features an infinity pool and further impresses by lowering its carbon footprint with hybrid-electric engines that allow it to run for several hours on batteries.

5. Family-friendly Mexican Caribbean cruise on ‘Disney Treasure’

Suggested itinerary: 7-night western Caribbean cruises , from $6,973 for an adult and two kids sharing a cabin

The big news out of Disney Cruise Line in 2024 is the December arrival of the 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure , the sixth ship in the fleet, which will be running on cleaner-burning liquified natural gas and cruising the Eastern and Western Caribbean. If you have youngsters who are fans of the Disney Pixar animated feature Coco , the sailing in the Western Caribbean is the way to go. From Port Canaveral, sail for seven nights to Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and the cruise line’s own Bahamas island CocoCay. The ship has a Coco -themed restaurant inspired by the movie and its characters. And the Coco theme continues on the Mexican island Cozumel, where a chocolate tasting and workshop is paired with hands-on learning about alebrije , fantastical folk-art sculptures and the inspiration for Dante, Miguel’s spirit guide in the film. Adult-only areas of the ship include a Haunted Mansion–themed bar based on the Disney theme parks’ attraction.

6. Choose-your-own Caribbean adventure with Explora Journeys

Suggested itinerary: 7-night A Journey from Miami to San Juan itinerary, from $4,050 per person; or 14 nights from $7,650 per person

The recently launched Switzerland-based luxury line Explora Journeys, with its resortlike ships Explora I and the upcoming Explora II each carrying about 740 passengers, cleverly does nonrepeating seven-night Caribbean itineraries, so depending on how much time you have, you can cruise for a week and fly home from the Caribbean or stay on board another week and return to Miami, without repeating ports of call. For example, sail from Miami to San Juan in Puerto Rico and visit Anguilla, Saint Martin (Marigot), Guadeloupe, and Dominica and fly home—or stay on for the next cruise and add St. Barth’s, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and the British Virgin Island (Virgin Gorda). The ships are posh playgrounds designed for couples and multigenerational families, with four pools (one for adults only), activities such as pickleball, 18 restaurants and lounges, and a cushy club for kids ages 6 to 17.

We recently reviewed what it’s like sailing on the Explora I .

7. Eastern Seaboard and Canada with Viking

Suggested itinerary: 15-night “Canada & the Atlantic Coastline” itinerary in April 2024, from $11,295 per person

Viking sails from Fort Lauderdale to Toronto as its state-of-the-art, 378-passenger expedition ships, Viking Polaris in April 2024 and Viking Octantis in April 2025, reposition from Antarctica to the Great Lakes for the summer season. On this itinerary, you’ll spend time in Charleston, New York, Quebec City, and Norfolk, Virginia, while visiting wild areas along the Canadian coastline. That might include kayaking or hiking Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, searching for seals and birdlife on uninhabited Brion Island, exploring the rugged beauty of Trois-Rivieres in Quebec, or sailing through the legendary lochs and canals of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The ships, with their sleek Scandinavian decor, are designed to combine traditional cruising and expedition adventures, with guests boarding Zodiac boats from an enclosed marina, called the Hangar. A pair of six-passenger submarines allow for underwater views.

7 Best Cruises From Florida For Every Kind Of Guest

Norwegian Getaway cruising of of Miami to the Caribbean

Florida might be considered the cruise capital of the world, with five busy cruise ports. So, if you’re searching for the best cruises from Florida, you’ll have a choice of embarking in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Port Canaveral, or Jacksonville.

While Miami and Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) offer the most options, selecting a cruise from Florida may depend on certain factors.

Some cruise passengers are loyal to one cruise line, while others seek the bells and whistles of the largest ships. The itinerary plays a considerable part in the decision-making and could come down to pricing for budget-minded guests.

If you reside in Florida, you’ll naturally want to select a cruise from the port close to home. If you’re flying, Miami International Airport offers great flight options.

So, if you’re hunting for the best cruises from Florida, here are some to consider.

Looking for the best cruise from Florida? Find it on Cruise Direct . Find cruises from Miami and other ports in Florida.

Best Cruises From Florida For Families

Florida is a top starting point for family cruises. Disney Cruise Line excels in family-friendly activities, especially for children from 4 to 12 years old. The line offers sailings to the Bahamas and the Caribbean. A highlight of their itinerary is Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

The island features distinct areas for kids, teens, and adults. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and biking are some available activities. Its Pelican Plunge waterpark provides lots of fun for older kids, and Spring-a-Leak caters to toddlers.

You can choose from itineraries on Disney Magic, Fantasy, or Dream. Most cruises are 5 or 7 days, although Disney Fantasy offers one 10-day itinerary in June 2024. However, Disney Cruises isn’t known for affordability, which may influence your choice.

Of course, the highlight of a Disney Cruise is meeting your favorite Disney character. So, whether you love Mickey, Minnie, or a Disney Princess, you’ll enjoy a meet-n-greet without the crowds at their theme park.

Royal Caribbean is another great option, especially for older kids. Their ships have rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, bumper cars, and surf simulators. Itineraries include Eastern and Western Caribbean destinations.

Their Quantum-class and Oasis-class vessels provide activities for all ages. On sea days, children will love the Ultimate Abyss and The Perfect Storm waterslide, while the adults can chill in the adults-only Solarium.

A cruise ship docked in Florida, Christ the Redeemer and a stingray tour

With a 7,000-passenger capacity, the Wonder of the Seas offers itineraries from Port Canaveral. When launched, their newest ship, the Icon of the Seas, will sail from Miami.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers Free at Sea packages. These let families customize their experiences. Choose from complimentary specialty dining, excursions, or Wi-Fi. They sail to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and even the Panama Canal.

Some of their vessels have two-bedroom suites, ideal to accommodate larger families.

MSC Cruises is a European cruise line which offers a blend of old-world elegance and casual comfort. Their ships offer Kids Sail Free promotions. The MSC Seaside ship, based in Miami, has an interactive water park.

Each cruise line offers something unique for families. Disney provides a magical experience with character meet-and-greets. Royal Caribbean is for the adventurous, Carnival Cruises are budget-friendly, Norwegian offers flexibility, and MSC gives a touch of luxury.

Consider your family’s needs to choose the best cruise from Florida. Whether it’s Disney’s Castaway Cay or Royal Caribbean’s thrill-seeking activities, there’s something for everyone.

Best Cruises from Florida For Wave Season

Hurricane season can deter cruisers from traveling, especially during the months of September to November. But you can still embark from Florida without significant worry. The key is choosing the right destination, which avoids the storm path.

A flamingo in Aruba

Southern Caribbean cruises to the ABC Islands—Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao—are a good bet. These islands lie outside the typical hurricane belt. If you’re traveling with family, you’ll find many  kid-friendly activities in Aruba.

Most cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Princess offer these itineraries. Due to the added distance from Florida, these itineraries usually last longer than seven days.

They depart mainly from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Tampa. Eight-day cruises usually only visit the ABC Islands. However, longer cruises often include stops at other islands like Half Moon Cay, St. Thomas, or  Amber Cove port.

Aruba offers white sand beaches and snorkeling spots. Since the beaches have shallow waters, it’s an ideal destination for families.

Bonaire is a diver’s paradise with its marine park. If you’re a novice scuba diver, you’ll have your choice of almost 100 accessible dive sites close to shore.

Curacao charms you with its Dutch-inspired architecture and vibrant culture. Curacao has mountains with wonderful caves to explore, unlike Aruba, which is relatively flat.

Colorful buildings of Curacao

Opting for a Southern Caribbean cruise during hurricane season is a safer bet. You’ll avoid most storm paths and still enjoy tropical paradise.

Since it takes a few sea days to reach and return from the ABC Islands, picking a ship with plenty of amenities will elevate your days at sea.

Best Extended Cruises From Florida

The Sunshine State is a top launch point for extended cruises. A Panama Canal cruise allows you to experience the marvels of engineering as you transition through the locks.

They often start from Miami or Fort Lauderdale and end in a Californian port or continue to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Expect a journey of about 15 to 21 days. Companies like Princess and Norwegian Cruises offer these cruises. You’ll see Central America, Mexico, and sometimes Colombia.

Cruising into Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Back-to-back Western and Eastern Caribbean itineraries provide a mix of history, beaches, and adventure. These last around 14 days, and you return to your embarkation port halfway through your journey.

You depart from cities like Miami, Tampa, or Fort Lauderdale cruise port. In the Eastern Caribbean, your stops may include the Bahamas, Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, and San Juan in Puerto Rico.

The Western Caribbean includes popular ports such as Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Belize City, and Roatan.

South American cruises are another gem. They often sail from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, and itineraries last around 21 to 40 days. You’ll explore Brazil, Argentina, and the Chilean fjords.

Highlights include exploring the Amazon River, Iguazu Falls and experiencing Carnival in Rio. Celebrity and Princess Cruises are key players here.

Transatlantic cruises provide a classic experience. These voyages can take from 14 to 28 days. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is a top choice for these trips as her classic ocean liner offers smoother sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.

Carnival Glory docked in Miami

You’ll start from ports like Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Stops often include the Azores, Spain, and Portugal, with some journeys ending in Southampton, England or on the ports in Copenhagen.

Shorter itineraries include mainly sea days, but longer cruises may stop in Bermuda, Lisbon, or the Canary Islands.

A Transatlantic cruise offers diverse cultures best suited to those who love sea days. Crossing the Atlantic can sometimes cause seasickness, so make sure to pack those motion sickness remedies.

Choosing an extended itinerary from Florida allows you to discover multiple destinations. Each option offers unique experiences, whether it’s the historic Panama Canal or the vibrant life of South America.

Short Getaways From Florida

If you’re looking for short cruises from Florida ports, you’ve got great options. Short cruises allow those new to cruising to ‘test the waters.’ Four-day cruises are also ideal for those seeking a long weekend getaway.

For Bahamas cruises, consider Carnival Cruises and Royal Caribbean. Both offer 5-day itineraries to Nassau and Freeport. These trips provide perfect beach getaways and vibrant local culture.

The Carnival Sunrise is budget-friendly, and you’ll usually enjoy three port days on a five-day cruise vacation.

Carnival Sunshine docked in the Caribbean

Key West cruises are another excellent choice. Most sail from Miami or Fort Lauderdale and last 4 to 5 days. Carnival and Celebrity offer the most options. Highlights include snorkeling adventures and the famous Duval Street.

Cozumel cruises frequently sail from Tampa or Miami. They usually last 4 to 5 days, featuring diving in the world-renowned coral reefs. Royal Caribbean and Carnival dominate this route.

Four-day itineraries only stop in Cozumel. By adding another day, you’ll benefit from another port day in Grand Cayman, Costa Maya, Nassau, or CocoCay.

Short cruises give you luxury and relaxation without a long commitment, regardless of destination. Perfect for quick escapes or first-time cruisers.

If you’re a seasoned cruiser, these mini cruises allow you to try another cruise line or enjoy a suite that might otherwise be unaffordable.

Best Getaways To Cruise Lines’ Private Islands

Cruising to private islands in the Caribbean offers exclusivity and luxury while being steps away from your cruise ship. Major cruise lines own islands like CocoCay , Half Moon Cay, Labadee, and Stirrup Cay.

Visiting Half Moon Cay

These islands provide a tailored experience, ideal for cruise-goers seeking something special. You can do as much or as little on a private island as you want.

CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island, stands out as a top choice. You can choose from 5 to 8-night itineraries from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Port Canaveral.

Guests love the Perfect Day experience it offers. The private island features a massive water park, zip lines, and a helium balloon ride. It also has numerous secluded beaches for relaxation.

Activities at CocoCay are versatile. From snorkeling to paddleboarding, there’s something for everyone. Families love the Adventure Pool and Splashaway Bay. Couples enjoy the serene overwater cabanas at Coco Beach Club.

Food and drinks are plentiful. Several bars and food trucks provide top-notch service right on the sand. Enjoy local cuisine and tropical cocktails without leaving the island.

The convenience factor is another big draw. Arrive, disembark, and you’re right in the middle of paradise. There’s no need to arrange transport or navigate foreign cities. You won’t need to worry about missing your ship because it’s right there.

Private islands like CocoCay offer an escape from typical cruise port crowds. They allow guests to maximize their vacation time in a secure, well-maintained environment. That’s why many travelers choose itineraries that include these unique destinations.

Swimming with a stingray at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas

The only downside to a private island is that excursions are exclusively through the cruise line. However, you’ll have many choices, with activities suitable for both children and adults.

Swimming with stingrays, horseback riding on the beach, scuba diving, glass-bottom boats, and jet skis – the possibilities are endless.

Best Cruises From Florida For Adults

Virgin Voyages targets adults looking for a unique experience. With ships like the Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, they offer trendy settings, unique “Rock Star” themed staterooms, and hopping nightlife.

No kids allowed make it a relaxed adult atmosphere. They sail to the Caribbean from Miami.

Celebrity Cruises’ Edge-class vessels, like Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Apex, are luxurious choices. These ships feature the Magic Carpet, a movable deck that acts as a tender platform on port days and a bar on sea days.

They offer Caribbean voyages departing from Fort Lauderdale or Miami. The Retreat, an exclusive suite-only sanctuary, provides a quiet escape for adults.

Le Petit Chef dining experience on Celebrity Cruise ships

Both lines focus on dining and entertainment. Virgin’s “Razzle Dazzle” restaurant offers a drag brunch, while Celebrity has world-class dining options like “Le Petit Chef”.

Virgin Voyages offers short 4 to 5-day trips, ideal for first-timers. Celebrity provides longer journeys, up to two weeks, with more ports and activities.

Virgin Voyages offers ample fitness classes and a tattoo parlor on board. Celebrity’s Edge-class ships have a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa facilities.

Price-wise, Virgin Voyages offers an all-inclusive model. However, Celebrity has options for various budgets, but cruise fares are pricier than more traditional cruise lines like Princess Cruises.

For adult travelers, Virgin and Celebrity offer distinctly different but rewarding experiences. Virgin leans towards a modern, party vibe. Celebrity gives a touch of sophistication and modern luxury.

Both sailing from Florida, they make exploring the Caribbean easy and stylish. Choose based on your preference for trip length, amenities, and atmosphere.

Best Cruises From Florida For Affordability

Carnival Miracle cruise ship

Florida offers a range of affordable cruise options. Carnival Cruise Line is a top pick for budget travelers. Known for value, Carnival offers economical packages with abundant amenities. Families and couples can enjoy pools, food, and entertainment without breaking the bank.

Most sailings are 3 to 7 days, perfect for short family getaways. You can score deals of under USD 250 pp on the Carnival Paradise and Conquest vessels. Inside cabins can cost as little as USD 50 per person per night on other sailings.

MSC Cruises also provides affordability. This European-based line offers competitive pricing on its largest cruise ships, like the MSC Seascape, or smaller vessels like the MSC Magnifica.

The line frequently runs special promotions. You’ll find various dining options and world-class shows onboard. Plus, children often sail without a fee on MSC, a bonus for families.

Those who prefer a bit of pampering can enjoy the most affordable suites in the MSC Yacht Club. MSC often throws in perks like complimentary drinks and Wi-Fi.

MSC's Yacht Club, their ship-within-a-ship concept

Don’t overlook the “drop-and-go” specials, ideal for those with a flexible schedule. These last-minute cruise deals are available on multiple cruise lines. They offer deep discounts to fill unsold cabins and are best suited to those close to a port.

You’ll have to be flexible with dates and room choices, but the savings are significant. Carnival and MSC offer these specials, slashing prices up to 50%.

For Floridians or those flying in, the proximity of ports like Miami, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale also cuts costs.

With five cruise ports in the Sunshine State, you have many options for Florida cruises. With 29 miles between the Miami and Fort Lauderdale cruise terminals, you can sail consecutive cruises from these two ports on different lines.

Those flying into Orlando International Airport can add on a few days to visit some of the many theme parks or the Kennedy Space Center. Finding the perfect cruise to the Caribbean from Florida depends on your preferences.

So, whether you’re a first-time guest, want a 4-day cruise, or prefer to visit a cruise line’s private island, you’ll find the ideal trip.

Imagine a vacation where you can visit multiple destinations and only unpack once; a trip where one fare covers your lodging, dining and, in some cases, as many fruity drinks as your heart desires. These are the perks of a cruise vacation – and it's a trip option that doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg.

Cruises can be an excellent value proposition compared to other types of getaways. That said, sailing away to paradise as uncertainty remains around the coronavirus pandemic may make you uneasy. Be sure to check with your specific cruise line, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other organizations before booking your trip for the most up-to-date guidance on cruising in the time of the coronavirus.

To make sure you are getting a good deal on your next cruise vacation, you have to know what to look for. The easiest way to save money on a cruise is to consider a short itinerary on a budget-friendly cruise line. Still, paying less money doesn't always guarantee a great value. It's important to weigh the experience you will have with the amount paid to know whether or not you are getting a good deal.

To choose a cruise line, you should think about what matters most to you for your vacation. Consider: Do you care more about a pampering onboard experience or interesting stops and shore excursions? Would you rather purchase an inside stateroom to enjoy the benefits of a pricier cruise line (like included fine dining and butler service), or go with a budget line and stay in a more spacious balcony room overlooking the ocean?

You should also consider time of year if you're intent on scoring the best cruise deals . Though peak season varies by destination and cruise line, Christmastime, spring break season (usually during the months of March and April) and summer are typically when you'll see the highest prices for cruise fares. If you opt to travel outside of the busy season for your selected itinerary, you may be able to snag a deal on the cruise line of your dreams. For example, hurricane season in the Atlantic (June through November) brings cancellation risks, but it can be a great time to find discounts on Caribbean cruises. Additionally, many cruise lines highlight deals during "wave season" (named for the abundance of promotions that roll through like a wave) between January and March.

Some cruise lines also offer more deals than others. Typically, luxury cruise lines list their best prices up front, when the itineraries are first published. Planning ahead and jumping on these fares can save you money rather than waiting for additional deals to pop up. Meanwhile, bargain cruise lines often have consistent deals year-round, even during the busy season, to entice travelers to book a trip. In some cases, waiting until the last minute can score you a deep discount or other promotional value on one of the more affordable cruise lines.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't sure where to start, we are here to help. Read on for U.S. News' guide to finding the best cruise deals. (You can also browse the Best Cruise Lines rankings to learn more about specific cruise ships and lines.)

How Do You Know If You're Getting a Good Deal?

To know if you're getting a good deal on a cruise, you should consider a few different factors. First, you should determine when your preferred cruise lines are at their busiest and most expensive. Cruise lines that attract families, such as Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line, tend to see a lot of customers during the summer when school is out. As a result, prices spike during these months. In comparison, luxury lines like Seabourn Cruise Line may raise their prices around Christmas and New Year's. If you are traveling during these peak times, you may not be securing as good of a deal as you could at another time of year.

The popularity of certain destinations themselves also varies depending on the time of year, which can affect cruise prices. For example, travelers often opt to take Caribbean cruises during the winter and early spring to escape the cold weather where they live. Because of this, Caribbean cruise rates at this time may be higher than at other times of year. On the other hand, Mediterranean cruises are typically less expensive during late fall and early spring months and more expensive once the weather starts to warm up and conditions in Europe are more favorable.

Another factor to consider when looking for a good cruise deal is the ship. Newer ships with all the bells and whistles often mean higher fares than older ships that have been in service for longer. If new, exciting features and modern staterooms are important to you, you must be willing to accept potentially higher costs. If not, search for a similar itinerary on an older ship to find a better deal.

How to Get Last-Minute Cruise Deals

If your schedule allows, another great way to get a deal on a cruise is to wait until the last minute to book your trip. As cruise ships fill up approaching their embarkation dates, cruise lines typically discount cabin rates in an attempt to fill any remaining staterooms. Rates usually start dropping about 60 to 90 days prior to the sail date, when many penalty-free passenger cancellation policies expire. Prices often continue to decrease as the date of departure gets closer, so the most daring of travelers may decide to wait until a couple of weeks out to book. Just remember that cabins can sell out – as can flights, for those who need to hop on a plane to get to their embarkation destination. You'll need to keep a close eye on all the moving parts of your trip if you plan to pull the trigger at the last minute.

To stay in the loop about last-minute cruise deals, sign up for email price drop alerts or consistently check fares on cruise line websites or third-party booking sites like Priceline, Cruise Critic and Cruiseline.com. Even a last-minute discount on an alcohol package or shore excursions will save you some money over the base cost. Still, travelers should keep in mind that luxury cruise lines are usually an exception to this rule. You will often get the best deal on a premium cruise by booking early – sometimes as far as a year out.

How to Find Cheap Cruise Deals

When considering what constitutes a cheap cruise deal, you should think about what you're getting for the price you are paying. For example, if the prices for a five-night itinerary aboard a new ship on a ritzier line and a seven-day cruise on an older ship with a more budget-centered line are in a similar ballpark, you may opt for the shorter vacation to get a more luxurious experience.

Still, if saving money is a bigger concern than getting more value or a higher-end experience, opt for less expensive cruise lines – like Carnival Cruise Line or Norwegian Cruise Line – with short itineraries to score the cheapest deals. Depending on the cruise line you choose and the time of year you book, you may be able to find rates for less than $200 per person. To save extra money, look for cruise promotions and discounts, and also consider bundling any flights and necessary hotel stays together if the cruise line offers that as a package.

Cruises Under $200

Having a small vacation budget doesn't mean you have to miss out on taking a cruise. In fact, some cruise deals can dip below $200 per person. When you see a deal this cheap, you should keep in mind that it will likely be for an inside cabin (no windows) on a short, two- or three-night cruise.

If you're looking for cruise rates under $200, check lines like Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International since these cruise lines often advertise sailings at that price point. Keep in mind, these low prices tend to apply to itineraries in the Bahamas and other areas of the Caribbean. If you're within driving distance of a port, you also won't need to worry about paying for airfare on top of what you're spending on your cruise.
