Your guide to visiting Lourdes: Everything you need to know

Post last updated:

Planning a holiday can be time consuming and at times confusing. I have created this guide about Lourdes to help you prepare for your trip to this historic town. My first visit to Lourdes was back in 2013 when I came to the Pyrenees on a cycling holiday. I am now lucky to call this part of France home and Lourdes is somewhere I visit on a weekly basis to shop or grab a coffee. Whether you are coming on a pilgrimage to visit the famous grotto, for health purposes, or to enjoy the stunning mountains this guide will help you prepare for your visit.

Lourdes is located in the southwest of France in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains. It is one of the most important religious sites in the world and over 5 million pilgrims visit each year. The main tourist season runs from Easter to October and July and August are the busiest months. Over the winter months, many hotels, and businesses close, and while it is still possible to visit Lourdes at this time of the year, your accommodation choices will be reduced.

While most visitors to Lourdes are coming as pilgrims to experience the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes, it is also a great base for other activities in the Pyrenees . There is a range of activities within the town itself, but it is also a great base for those who wish to explore the Pyrenees mountains and everything they have to offer. Most of the major attractions within the Pyrenees National Park are within a 1-hour drive of Lourdes. There are also options to catch a bus to some destinations in the park.

How to get to Lourdes

Lourdes is easily accessible by road, rail, and air giving you plenty of options to get here. I would advise booking well in advance as trains and planes do sell out given the popularity of Lourdes as a tourism destination. On more than one occasion our plans for a weekend away from Lourdes have been stopped due to a lack of availability on the trains.

If you are planning to drive to Lourdes you will most likely arrive via the A64 which is the main Autoroute that runs from Toulouse to Bayonne. Lourdes itself is located 18km south of the A64 and is nice and easy to get to and the turnoff is well signposted. The driving distance from Toulouse airport is 180km, from Bordeaux airport 255km, and from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport 855km as a guide.

If you plan to hire a car while you are visiting Lourdes you can do so at the Lourdes Airport or at the train station in town. I generally hire cars from the airport as not all rental car companies operate from the station. As a tip also, we find that car hire from Toulouse airport can be significantly cheaper than Lourdes. While this option is not feasible for everyone it is something to keep in mind.

The SNCF train station in Lourdes is located a short walk from the city centre and there are plenty of trains on a daily basis in both directions. From Lourdes, you can catch direct trains to Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Paris with stops at smaller towns along the way on TGV, Intercite, and TER services. We have a separate guide to the French rail network if you would like more information about trains in France.

For direct travel to and from Paris, you can choose either the high-speed TGV service via Bordeaux to Paris Montparnasse station or the overnight service via Toulouse to Paris Austerlitz station. There are 4 TGV services a day with travel times of 4 hours 50 minutes and 1 overnight service that takes 10 hours. I have used both services and would recommend either, it really depends on what suits your travel plans best.

Lourdes has an airport that is located 17km to the north of the city that is serviced by bus or taxi if you do not have a car. There are two main airlines operating regular passenger service from the airport, Volotea, and Ryanair. Volotea offers daily flights to Paris Orly airport and twice weekly flights to Naples, Venice, Palermo, Rome, and Catania. Ryanair offers flights to London Stanstead, Dublin, Milan, Malta, and Rome. Schedules vary based on the season so double-check with the airlines. The major car rental companies operate from the airport.

Pau airport is located 54km from Lourdes and offers daily flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle on Air France and Paris Orly on Transavia. There are no direct shuttle or bus services from Pau Airport to Lourdes. You can catch a bus from the airport into Pau and from there catch a train to Lourdes. The major car rental companies are located at the airport if you wish to rent a car.

The closest major international airport to Lourdes is Toulouse Blagnac, a distance of 180km by car. You can catch a train from Lourdes to Toulouse Matabiau station and from there catch either a bus or the tram to the airport. The bus to the airport leaves from the train station whereas you will need to catch the Metro to link up with the tram service. I recommend allowing 2 hours to get to Toulouse airport from Lourdes by car and 4 hours by rail.

Getting around Lourdes

Lourdes is not a large city and if you don’t mind walking a bit you will be able to access most attractions on foot. There are some steep hills and streets to negotiate at times. For those who aren’t keen to walk, there are local buses that run regularly throughout the day to take you around town There is also a small tourist train that operates during the tourist season that takes you between the major attractions. If you wish to travel to some of the towns and villages surrounding Lourdes there are bus services available if you don’t have your own transport.

The TLP Mobilities website has all the information you need about bus services within Lourdes as well as buses to the airport and Tarbes. Tickets can be bought onboard from the driver or at the Lourdes Tourist Information Center. You can use a credit/debit card to purchase a ticket on the bus but we have found it does not always work, especially if you have an international card, so have some cash handy.

For bus services into the mountains, you will find information on the liO Occitane website . From Lourdes, you can travel on the 962 bus to Bagneres de Bigorre or the 965 bus which travels to Cauterets, Luz Saint Saveur, or Gavarnie. Purchase tickets onboard. You will need cash to purchase your tickets and they cost €2 regardless of your destination. I catch these buses regularly and find them to be a great service to help you get around.

Accommodation options in Lourdes

As you would expect from a town that hosts over 5 million visitors annually, there is no shortage of accommodation options for you to choose from. As an interesting fact, Lourdes boasts over 270 hotels making it second to Paris for most hotels per square kilometre in France. Whether you want a luxury 5-star property or a cheap budget hotel there will be something to suit your style and budget. Prices per night start at €35 for a budget hotel and increase to over €200 per night for a luxury hotel.

If hotels are not your thing you can consider one of the many campgrounds in and around Lourdes. Here you can pitch your own tent, park your camper van or rent one of the onsite cabins or vans. If you prefer a house or apartment you will also find plenty of properties ranging in price and style on sites such as Airbnb.

Eating and drinking in Lourdes

There are five supermarkets in Lourdes, E.Leclerc, Carrefour (2), Lidl, and Netto with E.Leclerc being the largest. Supermarkets in France are typically open 8:30 am – 8 pm Monday to Saturday and 8:30 am – 12:30 pm Sunday. Carrefour City is a smaller supermarket in the centre of Lourdes. Its opening times are longer being 7 am – 9 pm Monday to Saturday and 8 am – 8 pm on Sunday. This is handy if you don’t get to the larger supermarkets before they close.

Les Halles is the fresh food and vegetable market in Lourdes. It is open Monday through Saturday and is worth a visit to sample some of the local produce. You can purchase fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and bread. I highly recommend the boulangerie located inside Les Halles, their croissants are some of the best I have ever tasted.

Lourdes boasts over 100 restaurants and cafes serving a wide variety of cuisines for those who wish to eat out. There is something to suit all budgets so everyone should find something that suits their taste and budget.

When to visit Lourdes

Based on my experience I think the best time to visit Lourdes are the months of May and September. During these months there are fewer people visiting making for a more pleasant experience. July and August are the busiest months and I suggest avoiding these months if you are not a fan of large crowds and your holiday schedule allows it. The months of November to April are considered the off-season and many hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, cafes, and attractions take the opportunity for a break and close.

Things to do in Lourdes

While the majority of visitors to Lourdes come on pilgrimage to visit the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes and the cave where Mary appeared to Bernadette, there are plenty of other things to keep you busy during your stay. Lourdes is a great base for a range of activities including cycling, mountain biking, hiking, and sightseeing in the beautiful Pyrenees. I have put together two separate articles with things to do in and around Lourdes. The first article focuses on things to do in Lourdes itself and the second article focuses on day trips from Lourdes to the surrounding area.

How many days do you need in Lourdes?

How long you stay in Lourdes will depend on what you wish to see and do while you visit. If your plan is to visit the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes only, then you can easily complete this within a day. This will give you time to see the various places of worship, attend one of the daily ceremonies and wander through the surrounding streets. If you would like to see some of the other attractions within the town I would suggest a minimum of 3 days. This will give you time to explore the main attractions, but also time to relax and enjoy the area without having to rush.

Amenities and services

Lourdes is the main centre for the mountains and surrounding towns and villages so you will find a range of amenities and medical services should you require them. This includes a hospital, doctors, dentists, chemists, petrol stations, mechanics, banks, outdoor stores, and hardware stores. If you can’t find what you are looking for in Lourdes, Tarbes is a much larger city and is only 23km by car. Tarbes is also serviced by train and bus from Lourdes.

More information about visiting the Pyrenees

If you are visiting the Pyrenees for the first time we have you covered with additional information. Start with our How to Get to the Pyrenees page that goes into a bit more detail on the options for travel to the Pyrenees generally. Our Things to Do in the Pyrenees expands on the information already provided on this page with a range of attractions a bit further, but still doable, from Lourdes.

The Top Things to See and Do in Lourdes

Lourdes as seen from a hilltop during summertime

When in the mid-1800s the Virgin Mary appeared to a young peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous, the fortunes of Lourdes changed spectacularly overnight. This small town in the Pyrenean foothills soon became one of the world’s most frequently visited pilgrimage sites, and today Lourdes attracts some six million visitors a year who come in search of physical healing and spiritual salvation. Here are the essential things to see and do in Lourdes.

1. the sanctuary of our lady of lourdes.

France, Hautes Pyrenees, Lourdes, Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

No visit to Lourdes would be complete without a visit to the site that kickstarted religious tourism in the town. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, also known as the grotto, is the site at which the young Miss Soubirous experienced the first of her 18 visions of the Virgin Mary. During her ninth encounter with the holy apparition, Soubirous was supposedly instructed to wash in the grotto and today visitors wait in line for the opportunity to take a dip in its freezing waters.

2. Château Fort

Historical Landmark

The 1,000-year-old Château Fort de Lourdes (Fortress of Lourdes) is the town’s only major secular attraction, balancing atop a rocky outcrop on the edge of the city. Never conquered in its history, it is home to the Musée Pyrénéen, a museum of regional artefacts and art. Gaze upon reconstructions of domestic interiors and learn about festive costumes and beliefs unique to the area. The ascent to the fort is a short yet steep walk whilst the views out over the city and beyond to the Pyrenees are a glittering reward. Those who find this a daunting prospect can take the lift for free.

3. Pic du Jer

Natural Feature

Overshadowing Lourdes, this jagged outcrop rises to 1,000m and offers exquisite views of the town and beyond. You’ll need roughly three hours – and plenty of bottled water – to reach the summit on foot. Failing that, the 120-year-old funicular offers a scenic trip that takes just 15-minutes. Disembarking at the top, you’ll find a restaurant as well as trails leading to various viewpoints and caves. The Pic du Jer is also a magnificent sight from below at night, crowned with its giant illuminated cross.

5. Moulin de Boly

The Moulin de Boly – the birthplace of Bernadette Soubirous, in the heart of Lourdes – was originally a water mill where the girl spent her first 10 years. Renovated in 2012, the site is now a museum featuring a bedroom, kitchen and watermill. Informative tours are available, providing more detail on the simple lives led by peasant families at the time and for pilgrims, it reveals a more intimate portrayal of Bernadette’s early life.

6. La Ferme du Bon’Air

For a break from sites of religious interest, this farm offers a fun and intriguing alternative surrounded by lush greenery. Meet and pet locally reared animals including ponies, guinea pigs and more. There are plenty of picnic areas for a leisurely lunch and if you’re visiting the town with young children, this farm provides a welcome diversion from the slew of historic sites.

7. La Source

10192602

Pilgrims come to this spring to collect Lourdes’ fabled water. The custom has its origins in the story of the Virgin Mary’s apparition to Bernadette, in which the girl was instructed to go to the source. It is important to point out that Lourdes water is not classed as holy water, as it has not been blessed by a priest. Nevertheless, there have been countless anecdotes of pilgrims finding themselves cured of various diseases and afflictions after drinking it.

8. The Holy Stairs

Architectural Landmark

These replicate the marble originals in Rome ’s Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta) which, Catholic tradition holds, belonged to Pontius Pilate’s praetorium in Jerusalem, and were relocated in the fourth century CE by the mother of Roman Emperor Constantine. The Lourdes steps lead to the first Station of the Cross on the Hill of Espélugues. Pilgrims often negotiate the 28 steps on their knees in penance to Christ, who climbed the Scala Sancta to appear before Pontius Pilate for sentencing to death by crucifixion.

9. Candlelit procession

Praying at a morning mass or service, Grotte de Massabielle / Grotto of Massabielle, Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, Lourdes, Pyrenees, France

As part of a tradition that began in 1872, from April to the end of October, every night at 9pm, the Marian Torchlight Procession travels from the prairie to The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Pilgrims join the march, bearing candles and torches as well as statues of the Virgin Mary. The walk takes about 90 minutes before blessings are dispensed by a priest.

10. Chemin de Croix

Eglise de Raynaude and Chemin de Croix department Ariege France

Completed in 1912 after 13 years of considered construction, The Way of the Cross is an integral part of a pilgrimage to Lourdes: a winding route navigating the wooded hill of Espélugues for 1.5 kilometers. Along it, 115 lifesize iron figures depict, in vignettes, the 14 devotions, or specific events that made up Jesus’s last day on earth: these, the Stations of the Cross, invite you to pause, contemplate and perhaps take a photo. (For the more physically challenged, there is a separate and more easily accessible route.) At the tranquil summit you can lie back on the grass, catch your breath and contemplate the horizon, as Pyrenean peaks fade to infinity.

11. Lourdes baths

Architectural Landmark, Spa

In the grounds of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, a natural spring emerges in the Grotto of Massabielle. The baths created around this spring have been a pilgrimage site for Catholic worshippers since the 1800s. Supposedly, the spring was revealed by an apparition of the Virgin Mary, who described its location to Bernadette Soubirous. What flows from the spring is considered to be a form of holy water that some claim possesses various healing properties.

12. Les Halles

At this huge covered market – the culinary heart of Lourdes – people shop for fresh fruit and vegetables as well as specialty ingredients and weekend treats. Expect locally produced cheeses, spreads and condiments as well different kinds of honey, pickles and preserves stacked temptingly on top of one another. While you’re browsing, make sure to try the traditional local pastry gâteau à la broche , cake cooked on a spit in front of an open fire, thought to have been brought to France by Napoleonic soldiers returning from battle in eastern Europe.

13. Grottes de Bétharram

France, Midi-Pyrenees - Grotte de Betharram, caverns near Lourdes. Tour group.

Just a 20-minute drive west of the city is this labyrinth of magical limestone caves, running beneath the foothills of the Pyrenees. Comprising several levels they are the result of water erosion over millions of years. The system is so vast that part of it can be navigated by boat and part by a small electric train, introduced in the 1970s. You’ll see otherworldly rock formations as well as stalactites and stalagmites that cast eerily shaped shadows.

Heaven-Bound Pilgrim

Pilgrim’s guide to france. how to travel to lourdes. part 1..

Town of Lourdes in southern France where Marian apparitions took place in 1858 and where miraculous cures are still happening today is visited by millions of pilgrims every year. Surrounded by high Pyrenees mountains and with the nearest large city (Toulouse) more than 100 miles away, Lourdes may seem as a difficult place to travel to. But in reality it is easier to travel to Lourdes than it seems by looking at it on the map – international airport (Lourdes-Tarbes) is only 7 miles away, buses run between the airport and downtown Lourdes hourly, nearly 100 hotels, dozens of restaurants and stores are available for visitors, all within a walking distance from the Sanctuary.

Lourdes Apparitions and Miracles

Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous for the first time on February 11, 1858 at the Grotto near the river Gave in Lourdes. St. Bernadette described the Lady as a very beautiful young woman who was wearing a white dress and a white veil, a blue belt and a yellow rose on each foot. On that cold February day, after making the Sign of the Cross, St. Bernadette said the Rosary with the Lady and as soon as the Rosary ended the Lady disappeared. During the next few months 17 more apparitions happened at the same place. The last apparition took place on July 16, 1858, the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Some of the apparitions were completely silent. Others included Our Lady and St. Bernadette praying Rosary together, Our Lady giving a personal message to St. Bernadette or teaching St. Bernadette a personal prayer. Despite the fact that some of the Lourdes apparitions had personal character (i.e. included personal messages from Our Lady to St. Bernadette that were never revealed), there were two important messages and one generous gift from Our Lady for all of us. First , Our Lady’s call for penance and conversion during the apparition of February 24, 1858: “Penance! Penance! Penance! Pray to God for sinners. Kiss the ground as an act of penance for sinners!” Second , on March 25, 1858 Our Lady revealed her name which not only described who she was but at the same time confirmed the dogma declared by Pope Pius IX four years earlier: “I am the Immaculate Conception”. Third , on February 25, 1858 Our Lady helped St. Bernadette find the spring of water which has been associated with miraculous healings until today.

More than seven thousand unexplained cures associated with the devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes have been reported since apparitions. Seventy of them have been officially recognized by the Catholic Church as miraculous. The latest cure was recognized in February of 2018; Sr. Sister Bernadette Moriau was suddenly cured from a decades-long sciatic nerve pain after her pilgrimage to Lourdes. Below are some of the other examples of the recognized miraculous cures. Serge Francois lost the mobility of his left leg due to herniated disc but after praying at Lourdes Grotto in 2002 he was suddenly cured and later even made a 975-miles-long pilgrimage on his feet to Santiago de Compostela in thanksgiving for the cure. Jean-Pierre Bely was completely paralyzed due to multiple sclerosis but after pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1987 he returned home able to walk. Vittorio Micheli was diagnosed with sarcoma (malignant tumor) of his left hip which was causing destruction of the hip. After pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1963, not only his cancer disappeared but previously damaged hip was miraculously reconstructed. You can read more about the miraculous Lourdes cures recognized by the Catholic Church here .

How to Travel to Lourdes

Majority of pilgrims arrive in Lourdes by airplane or by train.

Most frequent direct flights to Lourdes are from Paris, France and London, UK. Hop! airline (subsidiary of Air France) has 3 daily flights from Paris Orly airport to Lourdes all year round. Flights can be booked on Air France website. Ryanair flies from London Stansted airport 4 times weekly during summer season and 2 times weekly during winter season. Flights between Paris and Lourdes cost around $55 one-way during winter/spring/fall months and a little more during summer season. Flights between London and Lourdes cost from $35 one-way during winter months to around $70 during summer.

There are also direct summer flights from Brussels with TUI Fly Airlines, from Milan with Ryanair airlines, from Rome with Ryanair and Air One airlines, and from Krakow (Poland) with Ryanair.

When I was traveling to Lourdes in February 2018, I flew from Boston to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport with Aer Lingus (flight was paid with British Airways points and Barclays Arrival Plus points (card is no longer available but similar cards can be found here ). Then from Charles de Gaulle (also called Roissy CDG) airport I took a direct bus ( Le Bus Direct Line 3 ) to Orly airport and spent a nigh at the hotel near Orly airport (airport hotels can easily be found on booking.com or hotels.com by entering airport’s name as a destination). The next morning I flew from Paris Orly to Lourdes (my airport hotel and Paris-Lourdes-Paris flights were also paid with Barclays Arrival Plus points so I did not have to pay anything for my flights with the “real money”). You can read a few of my previous articles on how to fly to Europe cheaply or even for free here .

Lourdes-Tarbes airport is less than 10 miles away from Lourdes and it is well connected with downtown Lourdes by public transportation (bus). The airport bus station is located outside the arrivals hall, on your right. You will need to take a bus no. 2 (Maligne Des Gaves line). The bus schedule can be found on Airport’s website here .

The schedule can be a little confusing as it also includes transportation from airport to Tarbes city. Make sure that you are looking at Vers Lourdes/Direction Lourdes part of the schedule to see a schedule from airport to Lourdes. For a schedule from Lourdes to airport look at Direction Aeroport (with “Lourdes” on the left of the schedule).

Gare SNCF on the schedule means Lourdes Train Station. It can be helpful to look at the map of Lourdes before you go to see how your hotel and Sanctuary can be reached from Lourdes Train Station. Lourdes map can be found here .

It takes about 5 hours to travel by a direct train from Paris to Lourdes and longer if you have to change trains. Train ticket prices are about the same and sometimes even higher than flying from Paris to Lourdes. Train schedule can be seen and ticket reservations made here .

Comfortable 3 star hotels can be booked for $50-60 per night in Lourdes, often even cheaper if you are booking well in advance, travel during winter months or for at least 3-4 nights. My favorite websites for hotel reservations are booking.com and hotels.com. You can also reduce the cost of your hotel stay by using these strategies .

There are a lot of gift shops and restaurants in the area surrounding Sanctuary. If you want to save money by buying your food at a supermarket, one of the closest supermarkets to the Sanctuary is Monoprix located at 9 Place Du Champ Commun in Lourdes (hours and map are here ).

You can read about what pilgrims can see and do in Lourdes in my another article here .

Visiting Lourdes

lourdes travel guide

While Lourdes is well known to millions of religious pilgrims, it’s often overlooked by secular travelers. But you don’t have to believe the story of the Marian apparition, or even be religious, to enjoy a trip to Lourdes.

In case you don’t know the religious history of Lourdes, in 1858 the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared several times to a young girl named Bernadette (later Saint Bernadette). The Church determined 1862 that she had in fact seen and received messages from Mary, and the rest, as they say, is history – one which now includes a massive prayer and devotion complex that includes the grotto, churches, places to gather, and a full schedule of events for the faithful.

Why visit Lourdes?

However, it’s not like there are people checking for some sort of secret handshake in order to be allowed to enter the grounds, appreciate the architecture and witness the phenomenon that is Lourdes. It’s a culture unto its own, and one that plays an interesting part in the larger French culture.

So with that in mind, let’s take a closer look at visiting Lourdes, and you can decide if it’s something you’d like to include on your next Southwestern France vacation itinerary.

First, read more about how to get to Lourdes and where to stay in Lourdes .

Where is Lourdes, and what’s nearby?

Lourdes is close to Spain, but separated from it by the Pyrénées mountain chain. I wouldn’t exactly call it a day trip from anywhere. That being said, with a bit of ingenuity, it can easily be added to a trip to any of these cities.

  • Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz
  • Carcassonne
  • and even San Sebastian, Spain!

What is there to do in Lourdes?

Obviously, the Sanctuary is the big draw. Tours are available, which I recommend for understanding its place in the culture and history of both France and religion. Don’t think it’s for you? Well… have you visited the Vatican in Rome? The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul? Notre Dame in Paris? Then there’s no reason why the fantastic Rosary Basilica and the Byzantine Ukranian Church at Lourdes shouldn’t be on your list.

There’s also an 8th-century fort used by Charlemagne, which in any other town would be a stunning focal point. And being in the Pyrénées, hikers can enjoy the three summits in the surrounding area (and the lazier among us can take the funicular up to Grand Jer).

Of course, the town of Lourdes is interesting in and of itself – if only to see how a 14-year-old girl’s visions long ago transformed this place into what it is today. A stroll by the Gave de Pau river is always a joy. And there is prime people-watching, too.

When is the best time to go to Lourdes?

Weather-wise, May is the rainiest month, so keep that in mind. December is when it’s coldest, but January is not that bad and actually the driest month. The summers are mild and pleasant.

In terms of events, the town’s level of “open” is dictated by the Lourdes Sanctuary. In general, from April to October are the peak months; so much so, that some hotels close in the “off” season.

Lourdes is a town in the Hautes-Pyrénées of France. It is a global centre of Marian pilgrimage, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Many Catholics believe that the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared 18 times at the Grotto to a young girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous.

Originally a sleepy market town on the road to the spas of the Pyrenees, Lourdes has grown into the largest Marian pilgrimage centre in the world. The town has two sections: the international portion by the river, consisting of the spiritual area containing the Grotto and churches (known as the Domaine or the Sanctuaries), and the "French" portion, centred around the marketplace & Hotel de Ville.

In prehistoric times, assorted nomadic tribes had made Lourdes one of their settlements, of which one of their legacies include the still-standing Château Fort. The castle was then made into an estate jail throughout the 17th century and again during the Napoleon era.

Lourdes was the victim of a number of power struggles. In the 8th century, skirmishes erupt between Mirat, the local leader of the Muslims of Al-Andalus and Charlemagne, King of the Franks. According to legend, an eagle unexpectedly dropped a trout at the feet of Mirat. Seen as a sign of bad omen, Mirat eventually surrendered the fort and converted to Christianity , taking the name Lorus of which was the origin of the name of this city, Lourdes.

In the Middle Ages, for 45 years, Lourdes belonged to England as France surrendered from the Hundred Years War. In 1405, King Charles VI launched an operation to capture the city in an 18-month siege. The next century, the town witnessed another conquest between the Roman Catholics, the Protestants, and the Huguenots; the former of which eventually won and claimed the town in 1592.

Until the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1858, Lourdes was just a sleepy town of 4,000 residents and a transit town for tourists hiking into the Pyrenees.

The Apparition of Mary [ edit ]

On 11 February 1858, 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous along with her sister, Toinette, and a friend named Jeanne were gathering firewood near the grotto at Massabielle when the former heard the sound of a gushing wind. Lifting her head, she saw a small lady, bathed in light, looking at her and smiling. This would be followed by a near-daily apparition for 17 times until that July. Progressively, the whole town believed the story. The grotto was soon barricaded however, as reportedly 9,000 people witness the 15th apparition, but was reopened by the order of Emperor Louis Napoleon III that October.

The effects of the apparition are certainly enormous, especially after the Catholic Church confirmed the apparitions in 1870. A shrine was built there and was soon designated as one of the pilgrimage destinations of Roman Catholics around the world. People also take home or bathe in its spring water which is believed to have healing effects. The term Immaculate Conception was said by Mary as she introduced herself to Bernadette. As for Bernadette, she entered into a religious order 8 years later, settled in Nevers and is celebrated as one of the saints of the Church.

Climate [ edit ]

Lourdes is mainly mild, especially compared to Paris or northern France, and relatively rainy, regardless of the season. That said sunny or partly cloudy days can be especially easier to be found in the summer. Winter is usually cool though nighttime temperatures below 0°C are not unheard of and can last for a couple days.

Get in [ edit ]

There are several trains and buses connecting Lourdes to other French cities. It is also easily accessible by car, and close to the border with Spain .

By car [ edit ]

Lourdes is about 9 hours from Paris via Toulouse and the A64. Lourdes is easily accessed by car, although the narrow streets around the holy sites can become quite congested at weekends and holy days. Roads from the Southwest of France and from Spain are also good. On your GPS, make sure that you put the silent s with no apostrophe or you may end up in a village far away (there are several of them). Many foreigners make mistakes to the amusement of the other villages.

By train [ edit ]

best travel route to lourdes

Several trains travel to Lourdes, including TGV & night train service from Paris (six and nine hours respectively) and Tarbes in addition to intercity trains from Pau , Bayonne / Biarritz , and Toulouse . The small SNCF station offers minimal services, but there are free toilets, a small coffee/pastry counter, vending machines, and an adjacent cafe and quick service restaurant (service can be rather surly, even for France). Accessibility is excellent due to the large number of infirm and disabled pilgrims who visit Lourdes and many trains passing through Lourdes offer special services for the disabled. For information on trains to and from Lourdes, visit the SNCF website .

By coach [ edit ]

Organized tour groups from all around the world may have dedicated coaches (and even priests as tour guides) that take them to town. Coach arrivals from Ireland and the UK to Lourdes are charters, run by specific travel agencies or charity organisations for organised pilgrim groups.

ACROSS organises all-inclusive tours every week between Easter and the end of October for those with special needs in the UK.

By plane [ edit ]

There are other nearby airports with more flights, all of which require a transfer by train to Lourdes at the respective cities' train station:

By minivan [ edit ]

  • If you arrive in Toulouse there is also the possibility of a transfer by minivan. Some operators, such as Ophorus and Toursud also organize guided day tours to the city.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Due to the small area of the town, most destinations can be reached on foot. Some buses do seasonal runs between the train station and some of the biggest or furthest hotels.

Orientation [ edit ]

The Gave de Pau river splits the city into two. The east are where most of the shops and hotels are. The west part contains the Sanctuary complex and a number of high-end hotels a short walk away.

The downtown area is south of the train station and north of Avenue Marechal Juin. Most shops and restaurants can be found south of, and along the Rue de la Grotte, and west of Avenue Général Baron Maransin.

On foot [ edit ]

Lourdes is a pedestrian-friendly city with several pedestrian only streets and it is very easy to get around the town centre. It really is worth walking and exploring. The town is also used to disabled visitors, help is also readily available.

Lourdes has a complicated one-way street system around town and, because many streets are pedestrian only, it can be confusing and time-consuming getting around town. There are many places to park on the outskirts of the city (especially off the rue de Pau) and walking to the grotto is easy so, if possible, park and walk is the easiest way to get around.

By bus [ edit ]

Lourdes has 5 bus lines that connect the center with the suburbs. Routes L4 and L5 are useful for travel within the old town and the Lourdes Sanctuary Complex.

Each ride costs €1.00 regardless of distance.

Don't miss the nightly candlelight procession (buy your candle beforehand from one of the souvenir shops or at the sanctuary) in front of the Basilica and around the main square, with singing, prayer and a rosary recitation in maultiple languages. The procession of the sick to the Underground Basilica each afternoon is particularly moving, as well. Other religious activities available include confession (available in French, English, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch), adoration, stations of the cross, candle lighting near the Grotto, and rosary in front of the Grotto each afternoon (in French) and at other times/places in other languages.

If you have a car, spend a day in the wonderful Pyrenees. Roadtrips to Pont d'Espagne, Gavarnie or de Col de Tourmalet offer breathtaking mountain scenery and lots of opportunities for hiking. There is a historic chateau on a hill visible from the town, as well.

There is also a water fountain behind the taps if you wish to drink it directly or to also fill up your container, but they also have low pressure. free . ( updated Aug 2022 )

Buy [ edit ]

Lourdes has an enormous number of shops selling all sorts of kitsch and religious souvenirs like statuettes of saints, rosaries, candles, containers for storing the water from the source near the Grotto, mugs and fridge magnets. If items like these are your thing, the large Palais du Rosaire offers an enormous selection and will wrap items for you to take home. Rue de la Grotte is perhaps the most crowded street in Lourdes as that is where most of Lourdes' stores and restaurants are located.

Many shops will close for 1½ – 2 hours around lunch; be prepared to be shooed out of the store or hurried along with your purchases if you are shopping around 12:30. On Sundays, a few shops and supermarkets should remain open, though maybe with reduced hours and staffing, to take a chance on foot traffic to or from the churches.

Shops often have flags or signs outside indicating the languages (besides the obvious French, usually English, Spanish, and Italian, although sometimes German and Dutch) spoken there.

Splurge [ edit ]

Drink [ edit ].

While there are not a whole lot of bars in the city, it is worth noting that despite being an overwhelmingly Catholic city, the religion itself doesn't necessarily prohibit alcohol - even Jesus turns water into wine during a wedding and a couple Benedictine seminaries worldwide brew their own beer! What is frowned upon (and sinful), however, is excessive drinking to the point of being disturbing to everyone else.

Bistros usually offer a wine bar while brasseries would usually offer a full lineup.

  • 43.09509 -0.05259 1 Au Roi Albert , 109 Rue de la Grotte , ☏ +33 5 62 94 00 11 . Daily 07:00-02:00 . European comfort food and snacks, with a seemingly extensive pub and drinks ranging from wine to beer. ( updated Jul 2018 )

The famous water that gushes out from the springs are of course free. People would usually drink it for healing and spiritual purposes. Bring your own bottles, or buy one of the thousands containers or jerrycans (or one of the tasteful plastic bottles in the shape of a Mary statuette) available at almost every shop in town.

Sleep [ edit ]

With both backpacker and suitcase styles, the town offers multiple hotel options that fit almost any budget most of the year. Because of the large supply, extremely cheap accommodation can be found, with double rooms in hotels comparable to hostel prices (for example, €40 for a double room). However, prices can soar during the summer and especially around Christmas and Easter, religious events and the Tour de France.

There is a special youth village on the left side of the Gave River offering accommodation and facilities to young people. There are campsites in or around Lourdes, and these can also be relatively inexpensive.

  • 43.09981 -0.04389 1 Hotel Lutetia , 19 Avenue de la Gare , ☏ +33 5 62 94 22 85 . A modest family-run hotel near the train station with rooms overlooking the Pyrenees. Breakfast available for a fee. Near some of the cheapest places to eat in town. From €35 . ( updated Jul 2018 )
  • 43.09634 -0.05444 2 Grand Hotel Moderne , 21 Avenue Bernadette Soubirous , ☏ +33 5 62 94 12 32 . A big hotel only a short walk from the Lourdes shrine. Rooms range from singles to families with interconnected doors. Cavernous dining rooms with breakfast buffets and all-day Mediterranean offers. The friendly staff are proficient in English, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Doubles from €130 . ( updated Jul 2018 )

Stay safe [ edit ]

Being a pious city doesn't mean that there's no crime. Use common sense and street smarts. Pickpockets may be common especially on streets with plenty of pedestrians. Do not leave your stuff unattended.

As many attractions may involve queuing, allow extra time and be patient.

Connect [ edit ]

The code area for Lourdes is 562 with 5 being the code for southwest France. Telephone numbers for the region are usually written as 33 5 62 (the phone number) using two digits after every space.

All of the major French telecom companies are supported within the city proper; coverage may be spotty if you are on the rural area of the Pyrenees. However, if you need to call the emergency number (112), by law your call should go through regardless of the telecom company. If you use an international SIM, check your telecom company to see if it has roaming partnerships with France. Alternatively, use a short term SIM card if you will be here for a while.

The same operator should also provide fast 4G LTE connection for Internet. WiFi (pronounced Wee-Fee , not Wai-Fai ) is usually provided by your hotel and at some restaurants (usually indicated with the @ symbol), but hardly ever at churches; however the point being there for most is to pray, immerse in the liturgical events or talk to fellow pilgrims.

15 Things To Know Before Visiting Lourdes, France

France is a favorite destination of travelers worldwide but many people instantly think of Paris or the French Riviera when visiting the country. Although those are mandatory destinations for first-time visitors, travelers can expand their itinerary to other romantic and historic locations within the country.

Lourdes, France, is a popular destination for Catholics, as the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman in 1858. Located within the Pyrenees Mountains, the region is also popular among hikers . The city is famous for its reportedly miraculous healing water and religious buildings, but visiting Lourdes is more than a religious experience, but is an immersion in history.

During this time, the weather is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).

However, travelers looking for an affordable and less crowded experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (January to March). During those months, the accommodation prices are more affordable and the city tends to be less crowded.

Things To Do In Lourdes

Things To Do In Lourdes

For those familiar with Lourdes in a way or more, the town ranks high among the places to visit in southwest France. Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Lourdes has long been a major city. Even prior to the popular appearances of the Virgin Mary in the mid-19th-century, the town was popular for its protected chateau on the outskirts of Lourdes.

Following Mary’s appearance to Bernadette Soubirous, the peasant girl, Lourdes emerged one of the world’s most visited pilgrimage spots, recording a current figure of 6 million visitors yearly. Bearing testament to its catholic pilgrimage credentials, people visit with the hope of being healed from the blessed water from the little cave. While some just visit the site where the Virgin Mary was spotted.

Here Are Some Places to See and Things to Do in Lourdes:

Pray at the sanctuary of our lady of lourdes.

Religious tourism to Lourdes in incomplete without a visit to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. Where Bernadette Soubirous experienced her spiritual visions have become an attractive spot for pilgrimage.

Bernadette Soubirous was a peasant girl who lived in the town of Lourdes, where she also herded sheep. She was a simple girl; she could not read or write. One day in 1858, while the 14-year old lass was gathering fire, she encountered the first apparition of a Massabielle, a young girl, in the grotto.

According to Bernadette, the young girl donned a white dress with a blue belt at her waist and golden roses at her feet. The first time she beheld the apparition, it did not speak to her. She attempted to tell the other adults what she saw, but no one believed. The last time she saw the apparition, it said: “I am the Immaculate Conception”.

The Virgin Mary told the girl to visit every two weeks to see her. On one visit, the Virgin Mary told Bernadette where to dig in the grotto to show clean water from the Spring. Our Lady of Lourdes urged the girl to witness to others to drink from the Spring and bathe in it. The girl had such encounters priest times. It drew the Catholic church’s attention, and after an investigation, Bernadette was declared to have truly seen the Virgin Mary. 46 years after her death(in 1925), Bernadette was made into a saint.

Next to the Basilica, many tourists line to light a candle outside or immerse themselves in the pool to be healed. The sanctuary is located in 1 Avenue Mgr Theas, 65108 Lourdes.

Step in the Château Fort

Sitting on top of a rocky outcrop on the city’s edge, Lourdes’s only major non-religious attraction is the fortress of Lourdes. As visitors will observe, the ascent is a slope, but short and interesting walk. However, there is a lift, which is free for those who might find the steep difficult. Musée Pyrénéen, a museum displaying regional art and artifacts, is also housed in the Château.

Take a Trip to Pic du Jer

Carry on to the most fascinating view over Lourdes, the close by Argalés Gazost valley, the Pyrennes’ peeks, and the town of Tarbes. Dissimilar to the Château, the trip up is not a short one, as it takes about three hours to complete. Therefore the suggested pathway is through the 100-year-old funicular railway.

The railway is a picturesque journey itself! Meanwhile, coming down is quite easier, with a family-friendly trip through an old railway track. The Pic du Jer also offers a splendid night view, and you should capture every moment on your camera.

See Le Cachot

Lourdes’s history revolves around Le Cachot in a spectacular fashion that draws in the crowd in their drove every year. It is a dreary prison where the Soubirous family spent a year behind its bars. Here, visitors can behold the petit 16m2 room that the family lived in during the period I which Bernadette Soubirous had her religious encounters. Le Cachot is located in 15 rue des petits Fossés, Lourdes.

Be Awed at Moulin de Boly

The birthplace of Bernadette Soubirous, also known as the Moulin de Boly, is situated in the center of the town. It used to be a water mill where she spent the first ten years of her life. In 2012, the place underwent renovation with a kitchen, water mill, and a bedroom added to the place.

For visitors who would love to know about the spot, there are informative tours available, offering a detailed account of the simple lives that peasant families lived at the period. For pilgrims, they would learn more about a substantial background of Bernadette’s time on earth. The Moulin de Boly is located at 2 rue Bernadette Soubirous, 65100 Lourdes.

Relax at La Ferme du Bon’Air

This farm offers a terrific alternative for a day’s break from visiting touristy sites. Located in a beautiful setting of greenery, visitors can peep at and cuddle locally-reared animals varying in sizes.

It is great when you visit in conducive weather so you can play with loved ones in picnic areas, cafes, and indoor eating areas. Children will definitely love La Ferme as there many things to see and do. It can be found in Route de la Foret, Lourdes.

Witness the Extraordinary at La Source

La Source is where the supernatural meets the natural. The water source is where pilgrims approach for Lourdes’ storied liquid; a custom that originated from the Virgin Mary’s apparition to Bernadette Soubirous, during which the lass was told to proceed to the source, drink, and wash in it.

It might surprise visitors that this water is not categorized as holy water because it is yet to be blessed by a priest. Notwithstanding, there have been accounts that pilgrims got healed from different diseases after drinking it.

Climb the Holy Stairs

Not like regular stairs, the Holy Stairs are often climbed while kneeling. A clone of the stairs is in Rome, and they are part of the collection for a pilgrim’s delight in Lourdes. Visitors will climb 28 stairs; representing the step between Jesus and Pilate in the courts, before the former was sentenced to death on the cross.

When pilgrims climb the steps, they do so together with Christ’s suffering and endeavor to bring people closer to God in faith. It does not matter whether you wish to participate or not, as seeing the devotion showcased here is an experience that should not be missed.

Lit a Candle at the Candlelit

Since 1872, every night at 9 pm, a candlelit procession commences at the Prairie and ends in Rosary Basilica’s front. Pilgrims from both far and near carry the torches and candles and a statue of the Virgin Mary.

They would walk for about one and a half hours before a priest comes to bless. Ensure you arrive on time not to miss the fun. While visitors can be part of their rosary or choir, pilgrims start to gather at 8:45 pm.

Commune at Chemin de Croix

A popular and significant part of a pilgrimage to Lourdes is the Way of the Cross, also known as Chemin de Croix, which is a pathway winding along the wooded side for 1.5 km. There, visitors will find 15 various stations representing the journey Jesus gets with his cross and 115 iron figures showing along the route. For the differently-abled people, a separate room is dedicated to them and made easily accessible.

Admire From Le Petit Train

Taking a ride around Lourdes in a small train is a fun thing to do. It helps visitors to have a unique view of the town from the comfort of their seats. In fact, some tourists take a little train tour to enjoy the town better. Le Petit train takes visitors around Loudes for about 45 minutes. They will see the streets, monumental spots, and iconic destinations without stressing themselves.

How to Get to Lourdes

To enjoy your trip to Lourdes, traveling from April to October will be a brilliant time to do so. You can fly in from almost anywhere in France. The closest airport to the town is the Tarbes-Lourdes airport, which is a 15-25 minute vehicle drive to the town center.

In the case that you are traveling from within France, bear in mind that only a few airplane lines fly into the airport. Ryan Air and Air France Hop are the major lines in Europe that fly the airport. You can fly to another city if you are coming from anywhere else in the world, you may want to fly into another city to transfer to a Ryan Air/Air France Hop plane to proceed to Lourdes.

Are you looking for best things to do in Lourdes, France ?

In the year 1858, between the 11th of February and the 16th of July, something of massive importance took place in a little market town at the foothills of the Pyrenees, in southwestern France.

According to believers, the Blessed Virgin Mary had appeared 18 times to a 14-year-old peasant girl called Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes.

Bernadette’s little hometown had risen to prominence soon after and she would later become a Catholic saint. The town of Lourdes in Occitanie Region has become a very significant site of pilgrimage and religious tourism since.

Every season, about 6 million tourists and pilgrims come to Lourdes for healing and worship. However, Lourdes is not all about Saint Bernadette and the Marian apparitions.

Things you'll find in this article

1. Enjoy an unforgettable experience exploring the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes (the Domain)

2. drink and/or bathe in the lourdes water, 3. climb the holy stairs, 4. light a candle and join a candlelit procession, 5. relive st. bernadette’s beginnings and where it all started at moulin de boly and le cachot, 6. spend a few hours at the historic château fort, 7. ride the funicular to pic du jer, 8. get friendly with the animals at la ferme du bon’air, 9. relax on the shore of the lac de lourdes.

  • 10. End your day at a brasserie

Travel Tips And Resources

Here’s a list of the 10 best things to do and see in Lourdes, whether you’re religious or not.

THINGS TO DO IN LOURDES FRANCE

Top Religious Things To Do In Lourdes

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, or the Domain, lies on the banks of the river Gave de Pau. This historical site welcomes pilgrims and visitors from all over the world all year round.

For a truly unforgettable experience of the Domain, one shouldn’t miss its main churches , especially the following:

• The Crypt

Constructed in 1866, the Crypt features enormous pillars supporting the weight of the Upper Basilica, which was built on top of it. It is accessible through a long corridor covered with ex voto plaques and an entrance with a bronze statue of St. Peter.

• The Upper Basilica

Officially the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, this Gothic church is known widely as the Upper Basilica, built in 1876 on top of the Crypt. You will get awed by its stained-glass windows depicting various events in the story of Lourdes.

• The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary

The Domain’s third church, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, was completed in 1899 and can hold 1,500 people.

On the exterior of the dome, you will see the gilded crown and cross given by the Irish people as a gift, while on the exterior facade is a depiction of the Luminous Mysteries.

• The Underground Basilica

The modern oval-shaped Basilica of St. Pius X is known as the Underground Basilica because it is constructed almost entirely underground.

The largest of the Domain’s churches, the Underground Basilica can accommodate 25,000 people. It was built and completed for the centenary of the Apparitions in 1958 and features gemmail stained glass art.

In the Grotto of Massabielle in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, there’s a spring deemed holy by believers because it’s where the Lourdes water flows.

The spring’s location was supposedly described to Bernadette Soubirous by the Blessed Virgin Mary in an apparition, with the instruction to “drink at the spring and bathe in it.” A number of believers claim to have been cured of their illnesses or diseases by doing so.

You can ask the Lourdes authorities for a bottle of this non-liturgical holy water – free of charge. The water is tested and proven potable, so go ahead and drink!

A replica of Rome’s Scala Sancta (Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs), Lourdes’ Holy Stairs lead to the first Station of the Cross on the Hill of Espélugues. Pilgrims climb up on their knees in penance, so be prepared!

Called the Torchlight Marian Procession, this activity happens daily at 9 in the evening. The procession starts near the Grotto, continuing around the esplanade, and ending in Rosary Square.

Both must-visits in Lourdes, these two pilgrimage sites are important parts of St. Bernadette’s life.

Moulin de Boly is the saint’s birth home where you can see authentic artifacts from the time of her birth. Just a short walk from Moulin de Boly is Le Cachot, where the first Marian apparition is said to have taken place.

Top Non-Religious Things To Do In Lourdes

Château Fort

Lourdes, some say, is the place where heaven touches the earth, with the Sanctuary representing heaven and the Château Fort symbolizing the earth.

The Château Fort, a medieval castle of Roman origins, is located at the entrance to the seven valleys of the Lavedan.

Walk in its botanical garden, broaden your knowledge at the Museum of the Pyrenees, and be awed by the original tabernacle of St. Bernadette’s Church at the Notre Dame de Château. You will also be rewarded with the stunning views of Lourdes from up the castle.

Pic du Jer

The Pic du Jer, a summit in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is famous for mountain biking. However, it’s a lot of fun to ride a funicular and be up there quickly.

Experience to soar high into the fresh Pyrenean air and get a bird’s-eye view of the Sanctuary below. It’s truly breathtaking!

Perched in a serene and green setting at the foot of the Pyrenees, La Ferme du Bon’Air is a children’s farm for all the family to enjoy.

They have over 200 farm animals you can pet or feed, some of which are unusual like the sheep with 4 horns, sheep pandas, and miniature cows.

If you come in the spring or the summer, you can have a picnic at La Ferme du Bon’Air. Otherwise, the farm has a café where you can sit and enjoy lunch with your company.

Lac de Lourdes

Lac de Lourdes is a glacial lake situated in the surroundings of this famous pilgrimage town. It’s a nice trip away from the crowds of Lourdes itself.

Walk around the lake, have a picnic, try the canoes, or just about anything while also getting back to nature. There’s a local restaurant nearby for refreshments after walking.

Lac de Lourdes can be reached via bus service from Lourdes town.

10. End your day at a brasserie

After a day’s exploration and activities, find a brasserie (brewery) for an authentic Occitan dinner and cocktail.

There are a number of brasseries in Lourdes with several on boulevard de la Grotte alone. Pizza lovers will also enjoy making their own pizza at pizzerias scattered all over – with vegan options.

best travel route to lourdes

Lourdes is 516 miles (830 kilometers) south of the French capital of Paris and is located very close to the border with Spain, not far from the Pyrenees Mountains . The city welcomes millions of visitors a year, many of who are religious pilgrims coming to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, where Saint Bernadette is said to have had her 18 visions of the Virgin Mary. It sees so many visitors that in fact, Lourdes has France's second-highest concentration of hotel rooms after Paris, despite only having a local population of 14,000. From Paris, it's a short flight to Lourdes, but you can also drive or book a seat on a train or bus if you have more time.

Whatever your travel needs for the season ahead, odds are that a good tote can make your packing life more organized, and less stressful—honestly, what more could you hope for? With that in mind, we've scoured the internet for the more durable, functional travel totes for every type of traveler, from the serial overpacker to the organization fiend. Here, our favorite finds for all of your journeys.

Perpetually trying to find space in your carry-on for one last thing? Meet what one T&C editor calls, "the personal item of every overpacker's dream." Featuring five exterior pockets, plus six on the interior and an detachably pouch, it will keep all of your travel essentials organized while it's sturdy-yet-lightweight construction makes it easy to tuck in "just in case" items to your hearts desire without overwhelming your arms.

The cushy, reinforced straps are easy on the shoulders, but it also has a detachable crossbody strap and a built-in sleeve to slip over the handle of your luggage if you don't feel like toting. It also comes in four sizes (we're fond of the medium for it's ability to hold oodles of stuff while still slipping neatly beneath the seat in front of you on a plane) and a seasonally-refreshed roster of more than a dozen shades, making it as stylish as it is functional.

Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote

For the "a place for everything and everything in its place" traveler, this tote has you covered with a zippered bottom pocket that's perfect for separating out toiletries or dirty shoes from the rest of your haul (an interior panel also allows you to open the bottom compartment fully, if you're craving a deeper bag.)

Available in recycled poly or sturdy canvas, at 15" x 14" x 7", it qualifies as a personal item for most airlines and has a handy luggage sleeve to pair with your suitcase. For those looking for larger options, it comes in four additional sizes as well.

Cuyana bags are a favorite of T&C editors and royals alike ( Meghan Markle is a big fan ) for their timelessly stylish silhouettes, buttery soft leather, and effortless functionality. This, their latest launch, is made specifically with travel in mind.

Crafted with lightweight, durable pebbled leather (currently available in four colorways) it offers ample interior space (a 37L volume, to be precise) plus two large pockets, a phone slip, and a key clip, as well as snaps for Cuyana devotees who want to mix in their System Flap Bag or System Zipper Pouch .

If you're more of a "shop when you get there" traveler, this bag brings the souvenir space without taking up lots of room in your primary bag. Water-repellant and roomy (it holds 32L by volume) it features rugged shoulder straps, plus an extra strap that lets it slip over the handle of roller luggage, and can fold into its own exterior pouch when not in use to make a tidy, handheld bundle.

Some things are classic for a reason. Case in point: this timeless Longchamp tote; just ask T&C 's associate shopping editor, Sophie Dweck, who's been carrying hers for over a decade . Made from sleek, easy-to-clean nylon that comes in a cornucopia of colors, it features a simple, spacious interior and strong leather straps that ensure it can stand up to anything your travels throw at it, and look good doing it.

Looking for a tote that's as useful in your day-to-day as it is when you're far away? This multi-use tote has racked up thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon for its versatility. A separate, vented shoe compartment makes it as friendly to gym sessions as beach trips, while its multiple pockets keep essentials organized. It also includes a luggage strap and a USB charging port so you can plug in your tech without rummaging through your bag for your battery pack, and comes in two sizes and almost 30 shades so it will match your travel style.

One reviewer writes: "I must say, it exceeded my expectations in every way! This bag is the perfect blend of style and functionality, making it a must-have for any woman on the go."

Type-A packers, take note: this 100% recycled polyester is all about options. Its four colorways can be worn crossbody, carried in hand, or over the shoulder, and include a zippered exterior pocket, a luggage sleeve, two water bottle holders, and a padded laptop sleeve—all with Everlane's signature modern minimalist vibe.

Available in 20 colorways and textures, this canvas tote features a luggage sleeve that also doubles as a tech pouch so your gadgets will always be at the ready. The sturdy construction and bargain price tag have made it a hit with reviewers, who site its roomy 16.5" x 9" x 14" size and comfort.

One reviewer writes: "I am so happy with this purchase! Reasonable price, large main compartment, and a few zip compartments to organize smaller items. Bag fits perfectly under airline seat, even when stuffed FULL. It stayed in place when I had it on top of my roller bag, and I noticed the shape of it kept it from making everything tip forward (which happened with my previous bag)."

For a travel bag that you can use as a purse all trip, this simple Madewell leather tote brings a perfect mix of style and space (12.75" x 12.75" x 7.5".) It even comes with an interior strap that allows you to change the shape, and doubles as a keyring.

True L.L. Bean lovers know that the brand's classic Boat and Tote bag is hard to beat—after all, it's been one of their signature styles since 1944. Crafted from rugged cotton canvas, it's tested to hold up to 500 pounds, so no matter how much you manage to overpack, this bag is guaranteed to take it on. And with four sizes and two interior lengths to choose from, as well as a dozen colors, there's a perfect one for all your needs.

Best carry-on luggage for your next trip

The best carry-on luggage can easily fit in an airplane's overhead compartment and hold all your travel essentials without giving way. I spoke to Briggs & Riley's CEO Richard Krulik about what makes a good carry-on and listed the best carry-on luggage to buy now. Krulik only provided general shopping guidance, he did not make any product recommendations.

Carry-on luggage buying guide

Spinner wheels: "You want smooth wheels since that makes a huge difference when you're rolling the bag through a very long terminal," says Krulik. 360-degree spinner wheels are the best as they can rotate in any direction and will glide smoothly at the airport or train station.

Additional pockets: "A front pocket is always a real plus on a carry-on because you may want quick access to a magazine or a light jacket," says Krulik. Some carry-ons also have extra back pockets.

Telescopic handle: "You also want a firm solid handle that's not flimsy or wobbly," says Krulik. An adjustable handle is also important as we're all different heights, he adds.

Locks: You must buy a carry-on with built-in locks or lockable ones. TSA-approved locks can help keep your bag safe on the off chance that you need to check it in at the gate. You can also use your carry-on to hold travel documents instead of using the safe in your hotel room.

Durability: Ballistic nylon is the strongest and most long-lasting durable material, according to Krulik. That said, reinforced polyester is also a great option if you're looking for hard-sided luggage says Krulik. Before you shop, also make sure to look at a brand's testing requirements. Brands will usually test the bag's wheels on uneven surfaces to see how they hold up, and check how strong the outer shell is by subjecting the bags to drop tests.

Style: This depends on personal preference. Maybe you want a monogrammed travel suitcase or a bag that stands out from the rest - maybe in a pastel color? You'll want to think of your bag as an accessory, says Krulik. Keep your personal style in mind when you shop.

Size: Every airplane has different carry-on requirements, that said most domestic airlines require that your carry-on be 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches in size. International airlines are a bit different, while many follow the same domestic rules, some airlines prefer carry-ons only to be under 22 inches tall. Either way, check your chosen airline's baggage size requirements before purchasing any of the below.

Proxis Global Carry-on Spinner

Samsonite is a brand I swear by, having owned their luggage pretty much my entire adult life. The Proxis is one of their newer collections and a great option if you prefer hard-sided luggage. It has dual spinner wheels for maneuverability, an adjustable aluminum handle and a rugged exterior that won't get bumped or bruised during your travels. It also has a USB port, in case you want to charge any devices and a TSA-approved lock for safety. The interior has mesh pockets for additional storage and cross straps to hold your garments. Since this is a smart suitcase, you may have to remove the installed battery during security check, so keep that extra step in mind.

Briggs & Riley Essential Expandable Carry-On

Briggs & Riley makes some of my favorite carry-ons and I love them for their lifetime warranty - if you break a zip or see a dent in your suitcase, you can send the suitcase to the brand to have it repaired for free. This particular option is available in three colors and can also be monogrammed, making it easy to identify in a sea of similar-looking luggage. It has a TSA-approved lock and features the brand's flagship expandable and compression technology which allows your suitcase to hold more, without increasing its dimensions. The handle is adjustable too, and there is a carry handle on top, on the bottom and on its sides. There is also a built-in garment folder to make packing easier and zipped pockets on the interior for any essentials.

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 - 11.5 in (includes wheels and handles)

The Carry-On Roller In Text Me Red

This aesthetic carry-on is one of my favorites as it stands out from the other options on this list. It has a durable polycarbonate hard shell build and is available in multiple colors. It has spinner wheels like our other options and also has top and side carry handles. It also has TSA locks and is expandable just in case you need to fit more in. The interior has compression straps to hold your clothes, and also a separate pocket where you can store dirty clothes or undergarments. While it doesn't have an exterior pocket, it does come with an additional small pocket on the interior that is designed to hold any small valuables.

Dimensions: 22.85" x 15.75" x 9.85" (including wheel & handle)

Terra 45L Carry-On Luggage

This is the best combination of both soft-side and hard-side luggage. It's made from polyester and polycarbonate. It has 360-degree spinner wheels like the other options and also has multiple exterior pockets for any travel documents or essentials. It has a designated laptop compartment, is expandable and also has a water-resistant exterior - perfect for unpredictable weather. The inside has compression straps and mesh pockets for storage. Plus, the product is made from recycled bottles, making this one of the most sustainable items on this list.

Wrangler Smart Luggage

This budget-friendly carry-on sets itself apart thanks to its convenient cup holder attached to the bag. It also has multidirectional spinner wheels, top and side handles and is expandable, if needed. It even features a phone holder and also has a USB port option for your devices. The interior has one large zipped pocket and a side with compression straps. It's the most basic interior layout compared to the other options, but at its price, it's still one of the best carry-ons you can buy.

Away The Weekender

Away is another great luggage brand and they make both carry-on suitcases and duffel bags. The Weekender is a great pick for short trips and can hold a 15-inch laptop plus multiple changes of clothes. It has a detachable shoulder strap for comfort and a water-resistant design that's built to last. The interior has mesh pockets and a detachable key clip to help keep your everyday essentials organized. Right now, you can shop it in four colors.

Dimensions: 20.9" x 11.8" x 9.4"

Is hard-side or soft-side luggage better?

Soft-side luggage is less susceptible to getting scratched up, according to Krulik. That said, one isn't really better than the other, it's more a matter of personal preference. Soft-side luggage also has tons of additional front and back pockets for storage, which is not common on hard-side luggage. If you're packing items that are fragile, a hard-side option is better, according to Krulik.

How can I efficiently pack my carry-on?

"One of the things that I think people don't realize is every time you make a fold in your clothes, it's adding bulk to what you're packing," says Krulik. Fold your shirts in half instead of threes, he adds. "Secondly, there's dead space inside those shoes that you're packing." Stuff them with travel shampoo bottles or anything else that fits says Krulik. Finally, if you have an expandable suitcase, make sure you avoid expanding it till the end of your trip. "If I go with a maximum bag that's stuffed to the limits, I have no place to put anything that I might want to buy on the trip."
