Carnival Corporation Says 6,000 Passengers Are Currently Stranded at Sea on its Cruise Ships

Carnival Corporation confirmed on Tuesday that thousands of passengers are still stranded at sea on its cruise ships amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The corporation , which is the parent company of major cruise lines including Carnival, Princess and Holland America, disclosed the information in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing. They stated “there are approximately 6,000 passengers onboard ships still at sea.”

And those passengers may still have four weeks of isolation ahead, as they “are expected to disembark . . . by the end of April.”

It was not immediately clear how many different ships those passengers are aboard, but a representative for the company tells PEOPLE, “We expect to have three ships at sea by the end of this week.”“The ships that remain at sea were primarily longer cruises, including some world cruises,” the rep adds. None of the ships still at sea belong to their largest U.S. brand, Carnival Cruise Line.

Numerous cruise ships have been turned away from international ports in recent weeks due to expanding travel restrictions and in several instances, confirmed cases of COVID-19 — or fears of potential illness — on board.

Princess Cruise Lines’ Diamond Princess and Grand Princess ships, and Holland America’s MS Zaandam, which are all owned by Carnival Corp., have experienced the worst outbreaks to date.

In the case of the Diamond Princess, a total of 621 people eventually tested positive for the virus and seven former passengers have now died , according to Reuters . Twenty-one people tested positive on the Grand Princess, “some of whom subsequently died due to the disease,” Carnival Corp. said.

The MS Zaandam, which is currently en route to Ft. Lauderdale after being stuck in limbo for over a week following port closures in South America, has had four deaths on board and 189 passengers and crew reporting flu-like symptoms as of Monday night.

Four more of their owned ships also had confirmed coronavirus cases on board in the last two months.

“Numerous passengers and crew on . . .Costa Luminosa, Ruby Princess, Costa Magica and Costa Favolosa, have been diagnosed with COVID-19,” they stated, adding that “Costa Magica and Costa Favolosa are currently working with the U.S. Coast Guard to facilitate medical evacuations.” Both of those ships are now anchored near the port of Miami.

They also noted that even once everyone is on dry land, “Some of our crew is unable to return home, and we will be providing them with food and housing.”

The company, like much of the travel industry, has taken a massive hit amid the pandemic. The SEC filing was to issue $6 billion in stock in order to hopefully shore up its finances, but, it allows, the future is uncertain and the suspension of all planned voyages will likely be extended.

“Each brand has separately announced the duration of its pause, but we expect such pauses to be extended (and some extensions have already been announced),” the filing reads. Its flagship carrier, Carnival Cruise Line, has already cancelled cruises until mid-May.

In the meantime, the company is spending an enormous amount of money, while not embarking on any voyages.

Ship and administrative operating costs (including maintaining its empty ships in storage), refunding the deposits of customers canceling trips, and “COVID-related costs associated with sanitizing our ships and defending lawsuits,” among many other expenses tally to “approximately, on average, $1 billion per month,” according to the document.

In 2019, Carnival Corporation had a net income of $2.99 billion, the filing details. This year, it said, “We expect a net loss.”

On March 13, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) — a trade organization that represents Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Princess, Holland America and many more— shared that in observance of government health recommendations and travel restrictions, its members would voluntarily stop new cruises from departing at midnight on March 14, and all ships already at sea would make their way home.

At the time, 40 cruise ships carrying 90,000 passengers were in the middle of their planned itineraries around the world, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The agency released a timeline for their safe return: 11 of the ships were to complete their sailings and get back to port by March 16. The remaining 29 were to do so by March 30.

As of the deadline Monday night, however, CLIA confirmed to PEOPLE that 3.6% percent of its 277 member vessels had not yet made it back, meaning approximately 10 ships with passengers on board are still at sea. Another five are docked but cannot yet disembark.

Before the industry-wide decision to voluntarily halt sailings was reached, many cruise lines were proceeding with voyages as planned amid warnings from the CDC and U.S. State Department that citizens, particularly those in compromised health, “ should not travel by cruise ship ” at this time.

Cruise Ship Passengers Left to Suffer on Dockside in Full Sun for Hours While Waiting to Board: 'This Is Obviously not Fun'

Hundreds of vacation-makers found themselves stuck in the hot Miami sun on Sunday, as they faced several hours of delays while attempting to board a cruise ship.

The passengers were hoping to board the Carnival Magic vessel—operated by Carnival Cruise Lines—but were forced to wait because guests on the previous cruise took longer to disembark than planned, according to WPLG Local 10.

Carnival Cruise Lines sent a letter to its customers explaining the hold-up. "Embarkation at PortMiami for today's voyage of Carnival Magic has been delayed due to several factors, including late debarkation from a previous voyage."

"Embarkation for the next voyage is ongoing and we expect no impact on the itinerary of this next seven-day cruise," the company added. It later noted that boarding was further delayed by a customs inspection.

A Carnival Cruise Lines spokesperson told Newsweek the company "sincerely apologizes for this inconvenience and appreciates our guests' patience and understanding."

But the high temperatures and humidity took their toll on some waiting passengers. The company offered to bus passengers to a local restaurant, handed out water and free lunch vouchers, but 7 News Miami reported there were multiple medical calls regardless. Emergency officials did not specify the nature of the calls, the channel explained.

Passenger Diane Felicissimo told 7 News, "We got an email like three, four days ago that said, 'You need to be here on time. Don't come early, just be here on time." She said the experience was "horrible. There's people out here sweating, sunburning. There's kids that are overheated and cranky," she explained.

Carolina Calkins told WPLG that this was her first cruise, "so I have no idea how it's done." Regardless, she added, "this is obviously not fun."

WPLG also spoke with passenger Joe Guarderas, who was among those waiting at PortMiami. "It's been hot, but they brought us water, and there's no restrooms, and we don't know why, what happened," he told the channel. "We've never had this experience before."

According to 7 News, the guests were able to start boarding at around 4 p.m. local time, with the Carnival Magic eventually departing at approximately 6:30 p.m.

But some passengers are demanding Carnival Cruise Lines make amends for the delay. "I hope Carnival is gonna compensate us for this, because this is horrible," Felicissimo said. "This is really bad."

Earlier this month, passengers traveling on the company's Carnival Inspiration ship were stuck in a malfunctioning elevator . The guests—who were banned from all future Carnival cruises after being rescued—claimed that company staff were insensitive and disinterested towards them, even as one of those stranded fainted.

Carnival cruise ship out of Tampa saves nearly 30 people stranded at sea

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Carnival cruise ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stranded at sea after departing from Tampa over the weekend.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals after they were spotted signaling for help on an adrift vessel around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” Carnival Paradise notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and Roatan officials.

The ship was set to visit Roatan, Honduras, on Monday after departing from Tampa on Saturday for a five-day Caribbean voyage, according to CruiseMapper .

WFLA reached out to Carnival for comment. At this time, it’s unclear if the rescued individuals will return to Tampa on the cruise.

Carnival Ship Stranded at Sea With New Yorkers Onboard

Miles upon miles of sea all around them, but still there’s nowhere to go. Nearly 4500 people are onboard the stranded Carnival cruise ship Splendor, among them several New Yorkers. ”The cruise ship is still disabled, dead in the water, the passengers are being monitored closely, they're in good care”, described U.S. Coast Guard Captain Thomas Farris. The ship, which sailed out of Long Beach, was only on the water for about a day when on Monday evening a fire broke out in an engine room, knocking the Splendor out of commission. The passengers were left adrift without phone communication, running water, or working toilets. The ship, which was floating off the waters of Mexico, is now slowly being towed back to San Diego. Among the stranded, Westchester County Legislator, Bernice Sprekman , who was leading a group of 50 seniors on an adventure at sea. It’s a melodrama her boss, the Westchester County Board Chairman, Ken Jenkins , says he wont let her forget. “No she’s not going to live this down. First she missed out budget meeting to be on cruise… I can’t wait to see how the staff will decorate her office when she comes back” laughed Jenkins. Donna Marques’ mother, is just one of the seniors with Sprekman, “Well we know she’s safe, but we are worried, obviously it’s hard to be stuck on a ship,” said the Cortlandt, New York resident. In San Diego , the navy loaded eight planes worth of food and supplies for the Carnival Cruise Line, which will be flown to the aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan and then transported by helicopter over to the Splendor as it sits adrift off the coast of Mexico’s Ensenada.

"The first planes that went out this morning had about fifty-five hundred pounds of bread, water, food, plates,” said Petty Officer Anthony Moreno .

Carnival Cruise Lines says it will refund each passenger both their cruise ticket and airfare to San Diego, adding in a statement that “conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring.”

Cruise ship stranded in 2019 could have been "one of the worst disasters at sea," officials say

A cruise ship that lost power during a storm off the coast of Norway and nearly ran aground in 2019 avoided becoming "one of the worst disasters at sea in modern times," according to a new report looking into the blackout . 

The Viking Sky was carrying 1,374 passengers when it lost power and became stranded in a notoriously rough stretch of water in the Norwegian Sea. The ship came close to crashing into Norway's rocky coast, and hundreds of people were evacuated over the course of several hours. 

The blackout meant the ship could not move forward or be steered, according to the report from the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority. The accident was caused by insufficient lubricating oil in all of the operating diesel generators' lubricating oil sump tanks, the agency said, which combined with rough waters meant the ship could not operate. 

The investigation found that one of the vessel's four diesel generators was "unavailable" when it left port, the agency said, meaning that the cruise ship was not in compliance with safety standards and should have never sailed. The design of the sump tank on the working generators was also "non-compliant with applicable regulations," the investigation found. 

The agency's investigation "identified operational, technical, and organisational safety issues that in different ways contributed to the blackout" and called for more than a dozen safety recommendations. 

Once at sea, the agency said one of the biggest problems was that the ship's crew had never practiced the protocol for how to recover from a full blackout without a standby generator. This meant that engineers "were not practised in managing" the situation.

"The situation was stressful, the control system was complex, and a specific sequence of actions was needed. Insufficient training likely contributed to why the blackout recovery was time consuming," the agency said. 

Several of the safety recommendations focused on ensuring that various shipyards, ship managers and other organizations that oversaw the Viking Sky review and strengthen processes to ensure that materials are compliant with safety regulations, and to ensure that no other vessels are sailing with faulty machinery. Other safety recommendations suggested that new technology be developed to better measure lubricating oil "to ensure safe operation" of large vessels, and that the ship management company and cruise line operator review their engine room alarm system to identify and implement potential improvements.

A Carnival cruise ship rescued 27 Cuban nationals found adrift and signalling for help roughly 20 miles west of Cuba this weekend. 

The small wooden boat was in visibly poor condition, fitted with a makeshift sail and crowded with passengers, video shared with Fox 13 shows. 

The cruise ship's bridge team turned around the Carnival Paradise on its route from Tampa to Roatan, Honduras to rescue the Cubans around 2:30 pm. Sunday.

All 27 passengers were taken aboard, fed and checked by medical personnel, the outlet reported. 

Roatan officials and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West were notified. Neither the Coast Guard sector nor Carnival Cruise Line could immediately be reached for comment.

The ship's itinerary was not impacted, the liner wrote in a press release, and cruise-goers will reach Roatan's Mahogany Bay today on schedule. Before returning to port in Tampa on April 25, the ship is scheduled to stop in Cozumel, Mexico on April 23.

This wasn't the first rescue carried out by the more than 70,000 ton ship, Travel and Tour World reported. A sailor was saved by the liner's crew in 2019, and 20 stranded individuals were taken onto the ship in two separate 2022 incidents near Cuba , the outlet reported.

Passengers back on land after Carnival Freedom catches fire at sea: 'Very scary'

Spring breakers are stranded, and cruisers are crushed after a Carnival cruise ship caught fire in the ocean over the weekend.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Spring breakers are stranded, and cruisers are crushed after a Carnival cruise ship caught fire in the ocean over the weekend. 

The Carnival Freedom, a cruise ship based in Port Canaveral, made it back to land on Monday morning, but the rest of the ship’s sailings for the week were canceled because of the damage. 

Carnival is still investigating what caused the fire, but guests on board say they saw the ship struck by lightning on Saturday.

People disembarking the ship tell FOX 35 they’re thrilled to be back on land after going through a terrifying situation. 

"It was scary, very scary, fire on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean," said passenger Jamie Eubanks. 

It sounds like a movie, but it really happened. On Saturday, people shared a video with FOX 35 as they watched in disbelief as flames and smoke engulfed an exhaust pipe on the ship.

"I’m kind of shaken up by this whole situation," added another passenger after he disembarked. 

"When the flames started, it took them about three hours to put it out," said Nicole, noticing how rocky the trip was back to port after the fire. 

Because of the fire, the top deck was closed for the rest of the trip, and cruisers didn’t get to visit all the ports they had planned for.

"Carnival got to step it up, man," said another passenger. 

FOX 35 asked the Moore family, visiting from Indiana, if they still wanted to cruise after the ordeal. First-time cruiser Brandon says, "Maybe a different kind of cruise, maybe not Carnival."

Carnival says the fire didn’t spread past the smokestack, but the damage was worse than they thought. The funnel has to be stabilized before it can sail again.

The next two trips are canceled because the car will be repaired in another country. This has left thousands of spring breakers stranded in Central Florida. 

"I didn’t expect our ship to get hit and start a fire," said Moore. 

No one would, but passengers are still thankful they survived.

"Hey, they got us back safe," concluded Nicole.

Men stranded at sea after boat sinks are rescued by Carnival cruise ship, photos show

Two men were stranded at sea after their boat sank in the Gulf of Mexico.

The boaters were found by crew members of the Carnival Jubilee cruise ship, according to a Jan. 29 news release from the cruise line.

The men were inside a kayak that they used to stay afloat, the cruise line said.

“The ship’s team members spotted the two men off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico and quickly rescued them,” according to Carnival.

The men were brought onboard and treated by the ship’s medical staff and given food, Carnival officials said.

“The ship’s team and Carnival’s Fleet Operation Center staff in Miami kept in close contact with Mexican Navy officials and arranged a transfer, which was completed shortly after the rescue,” the news release said.

It’s unclear how the men’s boat sank or how long they were stranded.

The cruise ship had set sail from Galveston, Texas , according to KTRK.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 2 shipwrecked men stranded on kayak in Gulf of Mexico

Two men stranded on a kayak in the Gulf of Mexico were rescued by the Carnival Jubilee cruise ship Monday.

The cruise team spotted the men off Isla Mujeres, Mexico, on their scheduled route from Texas to the western Caribbean,  Carnival said in a news release .

The men ended up in the middle of the ocean after their boat sank, and they relied on a kayak for survival. They received first aid, food and a medical evaluation once they were safely aboard the cruise ship.

The cruise ship contacted the Mexican navy and transferred the men to its custody shortly after the rescue. Officials have not released their identities.

The rescue occurred about a month after a similar incident in which the Carnival Vista team saved six men stranded in the ocean near the Dominican Republic after a small cargo vessel capsized. 

The Carnival Jubilee will continue on its scheduled route.

A Carnival Cruise ship veered off course to rescue 27 Cuban migrants who were stranded on a rickety wooden boat in the waters between Florida and the island nation, according to a report.

Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported .

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.

But one of our favorite things about sailing on older Carnival ships, is seeing familiar venues such as dance clubs and main dining rooms with unusual names, picked for the ship’s theme (something that no longer exists on new builds).

For instance, on this ship you have the Centuries Promenade, International Aft Lounge and Victoriana Main Show Lounge.

But it also retains some of the things we love about the older ships, including four glass elevators. Another feature you won’t find on the newer ships is a band playing on the promenade at night, just outside the casino, bringing that entire area to life. One thing we’ll say about this ship: It definite has the mark of Joe Farcus, meaning you’ll find a whole lot of unique design touches, including some that border on Gothic. 

FAQ: Does Carnival Glory have a casino? Yes, it does. Does Carnival Glory have a laundry room? Yes, it has self-service launderettes as well as laundry services. Does Carnival Glory have a RedFrog Pub? No, but it does have RedFrog Rum Bar.

Fun Fact: While the steakhouse on most Carnival ships is named Fahrenheit 555, here it’s known as The Emerald Room. It’s a bit less formal looking than some of the steakhouses found on newer ships, but reservations are still recommended. Don’t have one? You might still be able to get in… plus, the Emerald Room offers a bar where you can have a cocktail while you wait for a table to become available.

The biggest difference between the two mega-ships? While Vista became the first ship to brew its own beer, Horizon upped the ante by combining ship-brewed beer with smoked meats to create the amazing venue that is Guy Fieri’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse/Brewhouse.

Fun Fact: The ship’s maiden voyage was also Carnival’s first cruise in Europe, a three-night trip from Harwich to Amsterdam and back. This was also the first Carnival ship to offer specialty dining. 

Carnival Liberty

The three-story atrium features an interesting combination of multi-colored lights and wrought iron, while the main dining room has white iron chandeliers that are reminiscent of the ballroom from Disney’s Beauty & The Beast .

The lights-and-ironwork combo recurs throughout, especially along the promenade. A nice feature of the pool deck is that it’s tiered, offering several levels of loungers. All of these have nice views of the pool, as opposed to a standard flat-plan where the majority of loungers are all on one level.

FAQ: Does Carnival Liberty have a basketball court? Yes, it does! Does Carnival Liberty have waterslides? Yes. Can you smoke on Carnival Liberty? Yes, but only in the casino and in the designated outdoor smoking areas.

Fun Fact:  This was the first Carnival ship to be outfitted with a Seaside Theater, which is now famous for the nightly poolside Dive-In Movies.

Carnival Luminosa

Highlights:  Truth be told, Carnival Panorama has been a bit overlooked thanks to her attention-hogging sister, Mardi Gras . After all, Mardi Gras is sort of a game-changer for Carnival, from her hull art to her top-deck roller coaster. But Panorama is deserving of a whole lot of attention in her own right. For one thing, the ship introduced a fleet-first in SkyZone, a multi-purpose trampoline park. It was also be the first Carnival ship to feature a culinary studio. This third Vista-class ship sails year-round out of Long Beach, California. Of course, the ship offers many of the favorites featured on her siblings, including Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse|Brewhouse, the SkyRide, and the Alchemy Bar.

But you’ll also find all your favorite Carnival hot spots, including Guy’s Burger Joint, the Alchemy Bar and a steakhouse (although it’s called Scarlet’s here, as opposed the Fahrenheit 555 branding). Like other similarly-aged ships in the fleet, Valor isn’t going to have the big-ticket attractions. But those looking for a classic ship will find exactly what they were seeking once they step on board.

Another distinctive feature is the Lido deck, which is modeled after the Italian Riviera and features a retractable roof.

Dolphin found dead on beach with ‘multiple’ bullets lodged in body

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Services is offering a $20,000 reward for information after a dolphin was found shot to death on a beach last month.

The juvenile bottlenose dolphin was found with “multiple bullets lodged in the dolphin’s brain, spinal cord, and heart” on West Mae’s Beach in Cameron Parish, Louisiana on March 13.

A necropsy confirmed the dolphin appeared to have died from trauma, which occurred at or near the time of death. The NOAA said the bullets were consist with a firearm.

Following the devastating discovery, the NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement is investigating the dolphin’s death and is offering a $20,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest or assessment of a civil penalty.

According to the NOAA, harassing, hunting, killing, or feeding wild dolphins, or attempting to do these activities is prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Violations can be prosecuted either civilly or criminally and are punishable by up to $100,000 in fines and up to one year in jail per violation.
