7 tips for visiting catalina island on a budget.

Catalina Island was well known as a celebrity hot spot back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and today as a top luxury summer vacation destination for Southern California. Between the amazing restaurants, wide variety of activities, and 4-star hotels, visiting Catalina Island can become expensive. But never fear, here are our tips for for visiting Catalina Island on a budget!

Tip #1: Visit during the off-season: November to March

Summer is a busy time for Catalina Island tourism. For lower hotel rates, schedule your trip for between November and March. You may find yourself getting a hotel room for 50% less than it would be during the summer season.

Tip #2: Skip the golf cart and opt for the Garibaldi bus

Renting a gold cart to get around Catalina Island seems like a no brainer, but I wouldn’t recommend it as your main form of transportation. Not only does it usually run ~$100 for 2 hours, there is a limit on how long you can rent the cart.

If you’re trying to visit Catalina Island on a budget, opt for the Garibaldi bus instead and only spend $5 per day! PS: I particularly love this as you’re not as rushed to see the different attractions and can go at your own pace.

Tip #3: Visit during the week (and get a deal on Groupon)

Save on everything from the boat trip to restaurants by browsing Groupon offers. Right now, you can grab a round trip ride on the The Catalina Flyer for just $44. However, parking for this boat service in Newport Beach is fairly expensive at $27 per day, so plan accordingly. Prices are also cheaper during the week if you are able to make it work with your schedule.

Tip #4: Plan a day trip instead of a weekend getaway

If you live in the Los Angeles area, save money and visit Catalina Island as a day trip. You can still enjoy a full day of activities by catching the earliest scheduled boat ride the island and returning on the last. Tip #5: Shop your hotel options and pay attention to the amenities

Different hotels on Catalina Island have different amenities and offerings. For example some include breakfast, others provide dining credits, beach towels, etc. Decide what amenities you could live without and you may be able to save money.

Tip #6: Get 30-40% off tours during the off-season

While you’re on the island, I highly recommend taking one of the tour options. If you are visiting during the off-season, tours can run about 30-40% cheaper than during the summer months.

One of our favorite activities on Catalina Island was the Catalina Island Undersea Sub Expedition . This 45-minute tour brings you face to face with the aquatic life of Lover’s Cove Marine Reserve, one of the healthiest marine environments in the world.

Pro Tip: Head to groupon before booking anything as they occasionally have discounted rates on tours!

Tip #7: Save on Catalina Island restaurants

Don’t miss happy hour while on Catalina Island! You can discover some amazing deals on food and drinks by visiting restaurants during off-peak times. While researching restaurants, check on your top contenders to see if they offer a Happy Hour menu. A few spots that we’ve liked:

The Catalina Express is the Best Way to Get to Catalina Island!

We arrived at the terminal in Long Beach in the morning. The parking lot was easily accessible with plenty of spaces. The lines to purchase the ticket was short and employees very efficient. The ride to the island is pleasurable!

Great way to travel to Catalina Island. Fast and efficient loading and unloading. Plenty of room for comfortable indoor or outdoor seating. Got to watch the dolphins playing alongside the boat, which was an added bonus!

The boat was on time both coming and going. Everything, including luggage drop was well organized. The seats were comfortable and there were option for both indoor and outdoor seating. Highly reccommend!

They are always professional and reliable. They offer many options to go back and forth. So give yourself plenty of time coming and going. Seating is first come first sit.

Clean fast ship with a pleasant snack shop that doesn't get ridiculous on their snack prices like movie theaters. They depart precisely on time. The most impressive to me was watching as the captain expertly pilot a fairly large craft!

How to Get to Catalina Island

The best way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. The Catalina Express operates multiple ferries a day. In our opinion, the ferry is both the most convenient option, and it also gives you the chance to spot dolphins, seals, and whales on the 1.5-hour journey to Catalina Island. 

The Catalina Express ferry service operates from three ports: Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point. Choose the one that is most convenient for you. We recommend purchasing tickets in advance. You can buy tickets online, by phone, or in person at the ferry terminal. Prices vary depending on the departure port, type of ferry, and time of year. 

The ferry ride is around 1.5 hours. Snacks and drinks can be purchased on board, too, so if you forget travel snacks at home—they’ve got you covered. The Catalina Express also offers a range of amenities to make the trip comfortable and enjoyable, including comfortable seating, air conditioning, and restrooms. 

In addition to its standard ferry service, the Catalina Express also offers a range of special packages and deals. For example, visitors can take advantage of the Island Hopper package, which includes a round-trip ferry service and a trolley tour of the island’s highlights. Other packages may include activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, or a visit to the island’s famous Catalina Casino. 

The ports usually offer daily parking. We departed from Dana Point, where the overnight parking was $20 per day. If you’re traveling with kids and lots of luggage, our insider tip is to drop the luggage off at the Ferry terminal and then park your car. It’s a couple-minute walk from the overnight parking lot to the ferry terminal. 

Keep your eyes open for dolphins, seals, and whales along your journey! 

As the ferry approaches Catalina Island, passengers are treated with stunning views of Catalina’s rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters. Upon arrival, passengers disembark at the island’s main town of Avalon, which offers a range of attractions, including beaches, shops, restaurants, and museums. 

Alternatively, you can visit Catalina Island by air. IEX Helicopters operates flights from Long Beach directly to Avalon for $349 round trip.

Where is Catalina Island? 

Catalina Island is a small island located off the coast of Southern California. It is part of the Channel Islands archipelago just a couple miles southwest of Los Angeles. On a clear day, you can see L.A. with the San Bernadino and San Gabriel mountains in the background from the island. 

When to Visit Catalina Island 

Catalina Island has a mild subtropical climate with year-round warm temperatures—it’s never too hot and never too cold. In the summer temperatures climb to an average of 72 degrees F during the day and 63 degrees F in the winter. Even though this doesn’t seem too high, never underestimate the sun. Pack your sunscreen and make sure to apply and reapply it even when it’s cloudy. 

Catalina Island is great in any season but if you want to avoid the crowds while not having the temperatures drop too low, we recommend visiting in spring or fall. 

How to Get to Two Harbors from Avalon 

The island has two main towns: Avalon and Two Harbors. Avalon is the more popular of the two, offering a variety of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and art galleries. Two Harbors is a smaller, more secluded town that is perfect for those looking for a quiet getaway. 

San Pedro to Two Harbor 

To get to Two Harbors from the mainland, you can take the Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro. The schedule to and from Two Harbor, however, is limited, so make sure to check the most current schedule on their website. 

Avalon to Two Harbors 

Hop in the Cyclone power boat from Avalon to Two Harbors . This might be the quickest and most economical way to get to Two Harbors from Avalon. The Cyclone Power Boat, however, does not operate all year, so make sure to check if the boat is operating (May to October). The ride to Two Harbors takes around 40 minutes. 

Private Transport 

You can book private transport to Two Harbors from Avalon. The drive is a little over one hour and prices can range from $200 to $250. 

Where to Eat on Catalina Island 

When you visit Catalina Island you’ll find plenty of options along the promenade to grab a bite while enjoying amazing views of the mainland and the island itself.  

Naughty Fox 

Located at the Bellanca Hotel, the Naughty Fox is one of our island favorites. This little restaurant offers great food and drinks with a good view. We went for dinner and breakfast and liked everything we tried. With just a few tables, the Naughty Fox can fill up quickly so make sure to get there early or call to make a reservation. Our favorite menu item was the Ahi Poke Nachos and we’ll definitely be back for more. 

Café Metropole 

This little café might be our favorite place in Avalon for breakfast, arguably the best breakfast on Catalina Island. Order a delicious drink from their juice bar and some homemade sandwiches. We couldn’t decide on what to order but luckily, it’s okay to be indecisive at Café Metropole . You can order half/half sandwiches to try two different sandwiches.  Make sure to check out this breakfast spot when you visit Catalina Island.

Descanso Beach Club 

Descanso Beach Club is a great place to enjoy a cold drink and enjoy the sun at the beach. We love the laid-back vibe, and it reminds you that you’re on an island. Chaise lounges and private cabanas are available for rent and lunch is served daily from 11am to 3pm. 

It’s about a 15-minute walk from the pier so make sure to plan accordingly if you are visiting Avalon from a cruise ship. 

Bluewater in Avalon 

Our pick for one of the best restaurants on Catalina Island with a view is the Bluewater Avalon . It is one of the few restaurants where you can enjoy oceanside fine dining in Avalon. The menu is mainly seafood inspired but offers meat dishes and options for vegetarians. Oceanside tables are limited but you can make a reservation online. 

The Lobster Trap 

If you ask anyone on the island where to go for dinner, we can certainly guarantee most people will recommend The Lobster Trap. We had dinner at Lobster Trap and loved the casual atmosphere there! They only take walk-ins so get there early or be prepared for a wait during peak season. 

El Galleon 

Right in the center of the promenade, you’ll find Avalon’s favorite karaoke restaurant. Every Saturday this restaurant turns into a karaoke bar and restaurant. Not your thing? El Galleon also is a great place with tasty bites to visit for lunch or dinner any other day of the week. 

Catalina Coffee & Cookie 

Cataline Coffee & Cookie is the perfect place to grab a coffee to go or a snack!

Where to Stay on Catalina Island 

The bellanca hotel .

The Bellanca Hotel in Catalina Island is a charming and cozy hotel that provides a comfortable and affordable stay in the center of Avalon. It’s easily one of the best places to stay on Catalina Island. The rooms at the Bellanca Hotel are clean, cozy, and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and all the necessary amenities such as air conditioning, cable TV, and Wi-Fi. Some rooms also offer stunning views of the ocean or the town.

Hotel Atwater 

The Hotel Atwater is centrally located in Avalon and was built under the direction of William Wrigley Jr. in 1919. The Hotel has been renovated and modernized since then and offers a unique experience on Catalina Island. 

Mt Ada 

You’ll find the most luxurious property nested on Mt Ada . The hotel with the same name was once used by William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada before it was turned into a hotel. This truly stunning property offers one of the best views on the island, but only has six individually designed guest rooms, so be sure to book well in advance of your visit.  

Things to Do when visit Catalina Island 

Go for a hike with catalina backcountry .

We always enjoy exploring on foot and went on a stunning sunrise hike with Catalina Backcountry . Barry, our guide, picked us up early for a scenic hike with some stunning views. To get to our sunrise viewpoint it was around a 30-minute hike uphill on partially maintained roads. We enjoyed the sunrise and then continued our hike. You’ll enjoy multiple great views of Avalon and the island. If you’re lucky, you might spot a bison or Catalina Island fox. 

Catalina Backcountry offers different hikes for everyone. If you are in for a multi-day hike they also offer gear hauls and camp set-ups for you. 

If you want to plan something more romantic, they can help you set up a beautiful picnic with a view. 

Sunrise Hike 

We started our tracker a bit too late so the information might be a bit off. 

• Length: Around 9.5 miles 
• Elevation: 1450ft 
• Duration: 3hrs 30min (depending on how fast you are) 

Tour the Catalina Island Casino 

When arriving on Catalina Island, one of the buildings that immediately stands out is the Casino. This circular structure is not only a nice photo backdrop but also has some interesting history. In our opinion, booking a casino tour is a must when you visit Catalina Island.

This casino is not an actual casino and never was. There has never been any gambling at the casino, but it was built to host events! 

We did the Behind-the-Scenes Casino tour which gives you more time to explore and experience this beautiful structure. If you are short of time, you can also sign up for the Discover the Casino tour which is shorter but will still give you a lot of information.

Watch a Movie at the Casino 

The Casino is still showing movies and you can purchase tickets directly at the ticket window. You can enjoy a movie in this historically rich theater while enjoying the amazing architecture and interior. Many celebrities throughout history like Marlyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin have sat on those seats enjoying films. 

Check the timetables for viewings since they do not show movies every day. 

Rent a Golf Cart 

Another great activity when you visit Catalina Island is renting a golf cart . And it is possibly the easiest way to get around the island. The reason why you see so many golf carts on the island is because Catalina Island has a strict limitation on cars. Golf carts do not fall into that limitation, and this is why you’ll see so many of them. Basically, Catalina Island golf cart rental is your key to getting around.  

We rented a golf cart for a couple hours to visit some of the viewpoints that are a bit of a walk. Also, because we did a 10-mile hike the day before, our legs were understandably a little tired. 

Bison Experience in a Biofuel Hummer 

If you want to experience Catalina Island’s backcountry but don’t have multiple days to hike across the islands, join one of the Bison Experience tours in a Biofuel Hummer . Your experienced driver will take you to some of the best viewpoints with the chance to spot some of the free-roaming bison on the island. 

Starting in Avalon, the Hummer takes you up windy roads to your first viewpoint. From there your capable driver will take you deeper into the island for a chance to spot bison and Catalina foxes. 

The Catalina fox is native to the island whereas the bison was brought to the island in the 1920s for a movie production and have since lived on the island. We’ve been lucky to spot one bison and a Catalina fox on our tour but since they’re free-roaming animals there is no guarantee that you’ll see some. Nevertheless, the bison tour is a great experience when you visit Catalina Island, especially to be able to see much more of the island in a short time. 

Make Your Own Catalina Tiles 

Strolling through Avalon, you’ll find that the town is decorated with many beautiful tiles. Rather than importing tiles from the mainland, all tiles you see on Catalina are produced right there on Catalina Island. You can buy Catalina tiles in one of the souvenir shops or make them yourself. 

Robin, the owner of the Catalina Tile Experience , will pick you up and take you to her studio where she explains a bit of the history of how Catalina tile production started. You’ll make two tiles in a design of your choosing. You can then select the colors in which you want to receive the tiles. Since it takes a while for the tiles to dry and get burned and painted the tiles will be sent back to you. 

This is a fun experience, and a chance to take a very unique, custom souvenir home.

Treat Yourself to a Spa Day 

Part of the reason we take vacations is to relax, and what better way to relax than by enjoying a spa day at the Island Spa in Avalon. Although we haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy the spa yet, we’ve heard great things and feel confident in recommending a rejuvenating treatment or an entire day of R-and-R. 

Explore Avalon on Foot 

The best way to explore the town of Avalon is on foot. There is plenty to discover in Avalon like colorful houses and stunning viewpoints. Don’t forget to bring your camera and snap photos as you get lost in the beautiful side streets. We took the time to explore the town and found so many picturesque spots. 

Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens 

One of the highlights when visiting Catalina Island is the Wrigley Memorial. The Botanical Garden started as Ada Wrigley’s private desert plant collection and is now managed and Maintained by the Catalina Island Conservancy.  

The Wrigley Memorial at the end of the botanical garden offers some great views over the botanical garden and Avalon Canyon.  

Both can be accessed with the same ticket. 

Zip Line Eco Tour 

Adrenaline seekers, this is your must-do Catalina Island activity. The zip line adventure takes you on five separate lines down to Descanso Beach Club. You’ll enjoy some great views while gliding down at up to 35mph.  

Relax at the Beach 

Just want to relax and soak up some sun when you visit Catalina Island? Head to Descanso Beach for a relaxing day of people-watching and sunbathing. If you have some time and would like something a bit more secluded check out one of the other beaches like Lover’s Cove, Emerald Bay, Pebbly Beach, and Two Harbors.

How to Take the Catalina Island Ferry

Located 26 miles off the shore of Los Angeles, Santa Catalina Island is a popular destination for day trips and getaways for locals and tourists alike. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to get there including taking a private boat to Avalon Harbor, flying on the Island Express helicopter to the city of Avalon, or booking a private flight into Airport in the Sky. However, the most common way to get to Santa Catalina Island is by using the Catalina Island ferry, which runs daily from various points in Los Angeles to the island, all year long.

Where to Catch the Catalina Island Ferry

Catalina Ferries are high-speed catamarans and mono-hulled boats with most service provided by two companies: Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer. You can catch a Catalina ferry from several locations. 

• Long Beach: Catalina Express  boats leave daily to Avalon from Catalina Landing in downtown Long Beach . The location has plenty of nearby paid parking, and the trip takes about an hour.
• San Pedro: Catalina Express goes from San Pedro to Avalon or Two Harbors. Their schedule varies by season, and they don't run every day on the off-season. The departure point is Berth 95 at the Sea/Air terminal, near the cruise ship terminals. This route takes about half an hour longer than from Long Beach because of a long, slow, no-wake zone getting out of the harbor.
• Newport Beach: The  Catalina Flyer makes one trip a day to Avalon from Newport Beach (Orange County). It leaves Newport Beach in the morning and returns in the late afternoon.
• Dana Point: Catalina Express runs at least one ferry per week between Avalon and Dana Point in southern Orange County. The Dana Point ferry is the closest one to Catalina Island from San Diego.

Tips for Taking the Catalina Island Ferry

While taking a Catalina Island ferry is a relatively easy thing to do, there can be some confusion on getting to the terminals, ticketing information, travel times, and restrictions for different ferry services in the Los Angeles area. Fortunately, there are many ways you can better prepare for your ferry trip before you get ready to depart for Los Angeles.

• Check for discounts. A ticket on a Catalina Island ferry can run up to $70, depending on your departure date and the company you're using to book travel. Save money by booking a hotel/ferry package through Catalina Island hotels , on the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce website, or through Groupon. Additionally, some of the ferry companies like the Catalina Flyer offer online discounts shown on their main page.
• Book your travel early. While you can buy tickets at Catalina Island ferry terminals on the day of travel, ferry seats sell out quickly at busy times—especially in the summer or on holiday weekends.
• Know how to get to the terminal. Airport shuttles to ferry terminals typically require passengers to know the zip code for the terminal, which varies by location. Taxi services including Uber and Lyft rides are available but will be more expensive.
• Arrive early for departure. Get to the ferry terminal early, and be sure to bring your Catalina ferry reservation number with you. You should check in at least 30 minutes before your ferry's departure time—though an hour is better. If you arrive less than 15 minutes before departure, you may find your reservation has been canceled as a no-show and sold to another passenger.
• Dress for sailing. It can get rather wet and windy during the trip to Catalina Island, so wear soft-soled shoes with tread on the bottom to help you get around the boat without slipping and bring a waterproof jacket to protect you from the wind.
• Prepare for motion sickness. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring your favorite remedy. Some use a "Relief Band" which is a drug-free, FDA-cleared wearable technology for the treatment of nausea associated with motion sickness. Seasickness pills and patches also help but can leave you drowsy when you arrive.
• Know the rules for pets. You can bring your dog with you on the Catalina Express but they must wear a muzzle and be leashed, and smaller dogs can also be transported in a pet carrier. However, no pets of any kind are allowed on the Catalina Flyer.

Luggage Restrictions on Ferries

The Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer services have slightly different rules for luggage allowances and banned items. For the Catalina Flyer, each passenger is only allowed to bring carry-on luggage and may only bring two pieces of hand-carried luggage per person, but for the Catalina Express, the luggage allowances are a bit more lenient.

On the Catalina Express, each passenger can bring two pieces of luggage, no larger than 23 inches by 23 inches by 37 inches and weighing no more than 50 pounds each. Luggage must be stored in the luggage compartment for the duration of the trip. In addition, each passenger may bring one carry-on that fits at the seat or in the overhead bin. You can bring one fold-up child's stroller free of charge, but you'll have to stow it in the baggage area during the trip. Bicycles, jogger strollers, children's wagons, surfboards, and some other large items are allowed on a space-available basis, but there may be an extra charge.

Lots of potentially dangerous items are not allowed on either of the Catalina ferry services. The ones that might affect you—especially if you plan to go camping —are butane cylinders, camp stove fuel, charcoal, firewood, fireworks, and matches. Additionally, some things that aren't dangerous are also forbidden, including pets of any kind on the Catalina Flyer or tandem bikes and kayaks on either service.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip: How to Spend One Day

TL;DR: The perfect Catalina Island day trip begins with a ferry ride to the scenic town of Avalon, where you can take golf carts to nearby viewpoints, snorkel in the clear waters, kayak along the coves, and indulge in fresh lobster rolls—all for around $200-$300 per person.

Catalina Island boasts 75 square miles of hilly terrain, beautiful beaches, kelp forests, and one of California’s most popular multi-day treks – the 38.5-mile Trans-Catalina Trail.

The island also happens to be one of the best day trips to do in Southern California since it’s only 22 miles off the coast and only about an hour by ferry from Los Angeles and Orange County.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I finally made the trip to Santa Catalina Island myself. It had always been on my radar, as many of the islands off the coast of California have been for years, but I just never made it happen.

That is until I found myself with an extra day after a trip to Disneyland . I quickly decided to finally experience Catalina Island once I realized how easy it was to get to the island.

Based on that trip, this is my full itinerary for the perfect Catalina Island day trip for anyone who is also looking for a unique and easy day trip.

By the end of it, you’ll know exactly what to expect with a day trip to Catalina Island, how to get there, and what to do to soak up the best that this island has to offer.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Unless you know someone who has a sailboat or helicopter, the easiest way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. There are two boat companies that take passengers to the island – Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer .

The vast majority of people visiting the island will take the high-speed ferry with Catalina Express since it leaves from more locations, including San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point and travels to both Avalon and Two Harbors.

The Catalina Flyer, on the other hand, only leaves from Newport Beach.

Here are the options for doing a trip to Catalina Island from the mainland.

From Los Angeles

Long Beach is the most popular and active port for traveling to Catalina by ferry. The ferries that leave from the Long Beach Port take about an hour and only travel to Avalon.

During the off-season, there are only two departures and returns per day. This is when I went so I just had to be mindful of ferry times to make sure I didn’t miss the only late afternoon ferry back to the island.

You also have to squeeze in a bit more if you’re trying to do a day trip during the off-season since the earliest ferry leaves around 7:00 am from Long Beach and starts its return from Avalon at 4:15 pm.

During the summer, you’ll find up to 6-9 departures and returns per day so you can be more flexible with your day trip to Catalina Island. Shoulder seasons can fluctuate so you’ll need to check the ferry schedules ahead of time before planning your trip.

San Pedro has fewer departures and returns but it’s also the only port with ferries that go to Two Harbors as well as Avalon. And similar to the Long Beach Port, the number of ferries leaving and returning per day depends on the time of year.

In the off-season, it’s usually only a couple of departures and returns per day and that goes up to around 5-6 to Avalon and 7-9 to Two Harbors in the high season.

The ferry from San Pedro to Avalon takes about an hour and 15 minutes and the ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors takes about two hours.

From Orange County

If you’re coming from Orange County or San Diego, you’ll probably want to leave from Dana Point. The ferries from Dana Point travel to Avalon and there are only a couple of departures and returns year-round.

The ferry from Dana Point takes about an hour and a half one way to get to Catalina Island.

Newport Beach

The ferry that leaves from Newport Beach is run by the Catalina Flyer instead of the Catalina Express. There is only one departure and return per day from this port and it only travels to Avalon. The journey takes just over an hour.

How Much Does the Catalina Ferry Cost?

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Express are $74.50 for adults, $67.50 for seniors 55+, and $59 for children under 12. You can book them here . 

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Flyer are $70 for adults, $65 for seniors 60+, and $53 for children 12 and under.

Visiting Avalon vs Two Harbors

To keep things simple, I put together this Catalina day trip itinerary based on starting your day in Avalon. There are a few reasons for this.

First off, most of the ferries that travel to Catalina Island only go to Avalon and back (with the exception of the San Pedro ferries), so you have a lot more choices if you’re doing a day trip to Avalon.

Secondly, there’s a lot more to do in and around downtown Avalon compared to the more remote Two Harbors. So if you only have a day, Avalon is the better option for more things to do.

And lastly, it’s quicker to get to Avalon. Avalon takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to get to depending on which port you’re leaving from, whereas Two Harbors takes two hours to travel to.

If you only have a day, you’ll want as much time as possible on the island so I recommend sticking to Avalon.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip Itinerary: 6 Things to do on Catalina Island

Walk around town & shop the local boutiques.

Estimated Time: 30 min – 1 hour

When you first arrive in the city of Avalon, I’d recommend spending some time getting acquainted with the cute downtown area and exploring the local boutiques.

Also, if you plan to do an afternoon tour but haven’t already booked one ahead of time, the dock area is where you should do that once you arrive.

Stop by the Catalina Island Coffee & Cookie Co for a fresh cup of coffee and maybe a bite to eat if you haven’t had breakfast yet. I’d highly recommend trying one of their delicious cinnamon rolls (if there are any left).

Then simply walk around the small area that makes up downtown Avalon. Poke your head into shops and find some souvenirs that you might want to pick up later before you hop on the ferry back to the mainland.

If you’re a photographer, this is also a great time to get some initial shots of Catalina Island and its scenic harbor with its famous casino in the background.

Estimated time: 2-3 hours

Once you’re caffeinated, it’s time to explore the island by foot and golf cart.

There are hardly any cars on Catalina Island, except for those that belong to the few thousand people who actually live on the island. This means most visitors get around the island by golf cart.

You’ll find rentals near the dock area by the hour. I’d recommend going with Catalina Golf Cart Rentals .

They also have a map for a 12-mile scenic route that takes about an hour to complete which is a good place to start if it’s your first time on the island.

Note: For rentals, you have to be at least 21 years old and provide a valid driver’s license. Renting a golf cart from Catalina Golf Cart Rentals also requires a $50 deposit and it’s cash-only but there’s a nearby ATM.

Rentals run at about $50/hour and there’s usually a deal where if you buy two hours you’ll get the third hour free.

Once you have your rental sorted, make sure to include these stops while exploring the island:

• Buena Vista Point
• Lover’s Cove Scenic Vista
• 3 Palms Scenic Overlook (this one is probably my favorite view on Catalina Island)
• Ocean Scenic Overlook
• Wrigley Botanical Garden

And if you’re up for a short hike, head up to the Catalina Island Conservancy near the Wrigley Botanical Garden and tackle one of these hikes:

• Garden to Sky Trail (2.8 miles)
• Trans-Catalina Trail to Lone Tree Viewpoint (3 miles)
• Hermit Gulch Trail (3.4 miles)

Hit the Water

Estimated Time: 2 hours

You can’t visit Catalina Island and not do at least one water activity while you’re in town.

The surrounding waters around the island are full of diverse marine life, kelp forests, and clear waters that are some of the warmest in Southern California.

It’s no surprise then that it’s a great spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, or exploring the water through a boat ride, kayaking , or standup paddleboarding.

Here are a few activities to choose from:

• Snorkeling – You can either do a guided tour if you’re not familiar with snorkeling or simply rent a snorkel and go by yourself. A few of the best spots for snorkeling near Avalon include Casino Point Dive Park/Avalon Dive Park (there are snorkel rentals near the park) and Lover’s Cove (a more secluded spot so you should pick up snorkels in Avalon before heading here). If you want to do a tour, I’d recommend going with Snorkeling Catalina .

• Scuba diving – You can book a scuba tour with Catalina Scuba (they offer tours for both certified divers and those without any experience).
• Kayaking or SUPing – If you prefer to explore above the water, renting a kayak or standup paddleboard (or going on a tour) is an ideal option. Since the water is usually very clear around the shores of Catalina, you can still see a lot from above the water. You can find kayak or SUP rentals from Wet Spot Rentals (they also have snorkel rentals) or Descanso Beach Ocean Sports offers tours and rentals.
• Dolphin & whale watching – If you’re not a fan of getting wet but still want to experience the marine life around Catalina Island, you can go on a two-hour dolphin and whale watching tour with Catalina Diver Supply .
• Jet skiing – If you’re just looking for a bit of fun out on the water, you can rent jet skis from Catalina Jet Ski .
• Parasailing – If you’re looking for a thrilling water activity, one of the best ways to see the beauty of Catalina Island is from above. California Parasail offers 800-foot flights for 1, 2, and 3 people.

Note: Another very popular water activity on Catalina is the island’s semi-submersible submarine and glass-bottom boat tours. However, many of these tours feed fish to get them to swim close to the boat. These regular feedings can actually be detrimental to the local fish population as it teaches them to not search for their own food. I personally don’t recommend any tour that interacts with wildlife in a way that negatively changes their natural behavior, which is why I don’t recommend these activities if you’re going to Catalina Island. And, in general, I find these tours to be overly touristy and not the best way to experience the local sea life in its natural habitat.

Relax on the Beach

Estimated time: 1-2 hours

Even though there are a lot of adventure activities you can do, it’s good to give yourself at least an hour or two to just relax on Catalina island’s beautiful beaches as well.

One of the best places to go where you can also grab a cocktail to sip out on the beach is Descanso Beach Club .

Located just past the casino, this private beach costs $2 for beach access but is the nicest beach within walking distance to downtown Avalon.

You can also rent private cabanas at Descanso if you’re with a group or choose to simply enjoy the sand with a beach towel. It’s the perfect place to relax and grab a drink or bite to eat in the off-season or during the week.

During the high season, it turns into a party beach with rotating DJs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so don’t expect a peaceful beach setting if you’re visiting the island on a summer weekend.

You can also rent kayaks , standup paddleboards, and sign up for the zip lining tour , rope course , and rock climbing wall at Descanso Beach if you want to fit multiple activities into one area.

If you’re not a fan of paying for beach access, you can also lay out on the small beach near the ferry dock, called Middle Beach (although it doesn’t have quite the same ambiance).

Eat Fresh Lobster Rolls

Estimated time: 45 minutes – 1 hour

Santa Catalina Island isn’t exactly known for its foodie scene, but it’s still surrounded by the ocean so if you’re a fan of seafood you should make time to grab some delicious lobster rolls before you get back on the ferry.

I went to the Lobster Trap while I was in town and although the service could’ve been friendlier, their lobster rolls were a great way to end my time on Catalina Island before making my way back to the mainland.

Optional Addition: Go on a Local Tour

Estimated Time: 1-3 hours

If you get through everything on this Catalina Island itinerary, you probably won’t have time to do a guided tour on the island as well.

However, if you choose to extend your time or want to switch out one of the above activities with a tour, there are plenty of options on the island. Here are some of the best tours on Catalina Island:

• Catalina Casino Tour – One of the most popular tours on Catalina Island is a walking tour through the historic art deco casino. There are two tours you can take: Discover the Casino Tour and Catalina Casino Behind the Scenes Tour . The 45-minute Discover the Casino Tour is the perfect intro to the history of the Casino and it allows you to tour the main highlights, including Avalon Theatre. The 90-minute Behind the Scenes Tour goes into more detail and focuses on areas of the casino that were once closed to the public for over 70 years.
• Jeep Tours – If you’re looking to explore more of the island than what your golf cart can handle, I’d recommend hopping on a two-hour jeep tour. This eco-friendly tour with Catalina Island Company gives you a good overview of the local wildlife around the island and even some bison spotting.
• Zip Lining Tour – As mentioned above, there’s a zip lining tour you can sign up for at Descanso Beach. If you’re looking for some thrills, this is an easy experience to fit into your time at the beach if you have a couple of hours to spare. On the tour, you’re taken 600 feet above the beach where you’ll fly across the canyon and through some eucalyptus trees at around 35 MPH. Along the zip line course, you’ll enjoy some scenic ocean views and learn more about the flora and fauna that can be found on Catalina Island. And, if you’re looking for more activities, there’s also a rock climbing wall and ropes course at Descanso Beach.
• Ghost Tours – If you’re staying overnight, looking for a quirky tour, and you enjoy ghost stories, doing a Haunted Catalina ghost tour can be a fun way to spend an hour. Tours start at 7 pm nightly from the base of the Green Pier in downtown Avalon.

Quick History of Catalina Island

Santa Catalina Island’s history goes back to 8,000 years when Indigenous people from the Gabrieliño/Tongva tribe first inhabited the island.

Over the years, it’s been visited by smugglers, pirates, the Union army, missionaries, celebrities, and, of course, travelers.

For a good chunk of the 19th century, the island was owned by James Lick, a real estate investor and at one point the wealthiest man in California.

He eventually sold the island to the Banning Brothers, who started the Santa Catalina Island Company in the 1890s and turned the island into the resort destination it is today.

In the early 1900s, William Wrigley Jr., who had a controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company, started developing the island even more into a resort destination.

He was the one who built the Catalina Casino and he even made Avalon the Spring Training home for the Chicago Cubs until 1951. His descendants still own most of the Santa Catalina Island Company today.

For a short stint during World War II, the island closed down to the public so it could be used as a military training facility. After the war, tourism picked up again and it became a popular vacation spot for celebrities, especially from the 1930s to 1950s.

Catalina Island was and still is a popular place to shoot movies (over 500 films, tv shows, and commercials have been shot in the area).

Best Time to Visit Catalina Island

The best time of year to explore Catalina Island is spring and fall. You’ll find the best weather during this time of the year and slightly fewer crowds than you will in summer.

Summer can be a good time to visit as well, but the weather is often overcast in the mornings with the sun not breaking through until the afternoon.

Winter is the worst time to visit with choppy waters that make water activities hard to do and the ferry ride to and from the island unpleasant.

However, if you’re looking for fewer crowds and care more about land activities, winter can be a good alternative to the busier months.

Just note that winter brings reduced ferry times so there’s less wiggle room for a day trip (although it’s still very much possible).

Tips for Visiting Catalina Island

• Catalina Island isn’t the cheapest – As you can probably tell with the ferry price alone, a visit to Catalina Island isn’t always the cheapest. Transportation (including the ferry and golf cart rentals), food, and accommodation (if you’re planning a weekend trip), all come at a premium price. Make sure to budget accordingly and know that you’ll probably have to spend at least $200-$300 for a day trip to Catalina.
• Keep track of ferry times – This is especially the case if you’re visiting in the low season when there are only 1-2 departures and returns per day. Make sure you’re keeping track of the time and that you can actually fit everything in without needing to rush back to the ferry if you’re only doing a day trip.
• Pack water shoes – If you plan to do water activities, don’t forget a pair of water shoes. Although there are some soft sandy beaches, a lot of the shoreline around Catalina Island can be rocky and uncomfortable to walk around with bare feet.
• Try a Buffalo Milk cocktail – You can’t make a visit to Catalina Island without trying its signature drink! This creamy cocktail is made with vodka, Kahlua, Creme de Cocoa, Cream de Banana, and half and half. You should be able to find it at any bar on Catalina Island, but a good place to start is either Descanso Beach Club or Luau Larry’s. It’s basically like ice cream in cocktail form.

Available from four mainland ports, this relaxing and scenic boat ride takes just over an hour and often includes dolphin and whale sightings. Both the Catalina Express and the Catalina Flyer offer daily scheduled service to Catalina Island. The Catalina Express offers several departures throughout the day to both Avalon and Two Harbors from three mainland ports in San Pedro, Long Beach and Dana Point. The Catalina Flyer offers ferry service from Newport Beach to Avalon. Visitor vehicles are not allowed on nor transported to the island.

Catalina Express

Directions to Catalina Express terminal in San Pedro, CA Take the 110 Harbor Freeway south into San Pedro.  Take the Terminal Island, Exit 47 ramp.  Stay in the right lane, exit Harbor Blvd.  Follow signs to Catalina Terminal, Berth 95, entrance across Harbor Blvd.  If you’re coming from Long Beach you can take Ocean Blvd. west, cross over the Vincent Thomas bridge, and take the Harbor Blvd. exit. Follow signs to Catalina Sea and Air Terminal, Berth 95 Directions Catalina Landing in Downtown Long Beach, CA Take the 710 Freeway south into Long Beach.  Stay to the left, follow signs to downtown and exit Golden Shore. Turn right at stop sign, follow around to terminal on the right; parking structure is on the left.

Directions to Catalina Express in Dana Point, CA From Los Angeles  – Take I-5 Freeway south & exit at Pacific Coast Highway. From San Diego  – Take I-5 Freeway north & exit at Beach Cities, Highway #1 off ramp. Take a left at the signal, (Dana Point Harbor Drive) then left at Golden Lantern, which dead ends at Dana Harbor parking lot.

Catalina Flyer

Directions to Catalina Flyer terminal in Newport Beach, CA Take the 405 Freeway to the 55 Freeway south. The 55 ends and becomes Newport Blvd, which ends and becomes Balboa Blvd. Travel two miles on Balboa Blvd. Turn left on Main St. for the terminal at the Balboa Pavilion or turn right on Palm Street for long-term parking.

Regulations

The US Coast Guard has issued security measures for all passenger vessels. All passengers 16 years or older must have photo identification or they may not be permitted to board the vessel. Please be sure to have photo identification when checking in at the ticket counter and when boarding. All baggage must have an identification tag and is subject to physical inspection.

There’s another ferry option, Catalina Flyer that departs from Newport Beach. 

🚁 Helicopter To Catalina Island 

IEX Helicopters offers flights from Long Beach or San Pedro and the flight takes 15 minutes with round-trip prices from $349 to $598.

There are also flights from LAX airport, Santa Monica, Burbank, Van Nuys, and Hawthorn with round-trip prices that range from $2,699 – $3,699. It can take 21-28 minutes to get to the island.

While helicopter transportation to Catalina Island is a faster and more direct option, it is more expensive than taking the Catalina Express ferry. 

🛥️ Boat Charters  

There are boat charters from Los Angeles that you could book from mainland California to the island including Los Angeles Yacht Charter and Luxury Liners . 

This is also a pricey option that can be from $750 to $27,000 for a yacht charter.

How to Visit Catalina Island: A Brief Tutorial on the Basics

We go to Catalina Island every summer. We’ve been visiting Catalina ever since I was in high school – so that’s 20+ years.

I’m surprised how many of my friends have never taken the trip over to the island. 

It’s a whole other world out there! You feel like you’ve traveled back in time to wide open California spaces.

Where is Catalina?

Catalina Island sits offshore from Rancho Palos Verdes Peninsula. It’s visible from Orange County beaches on clear days.

Santa Catalina Island is one of the Channel Islands, but not part of Channel Islands National Park (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara islands).

There are two main destinations on the island: Avalon and Two Harbors . Just in case you are wondering, the island is located in Los Angeles County (not Orange County).

I just write about it here, because I know it so well and it’s easy to reach even from Orange County.

Where to Go on a Day Trip to Catalina

Visiting avalon.

Avalon is a bustling tourist center with cruise ship visitors, hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and tours. If you want to read more about Avalon, I have a post about the Top 25 Things to Do in Avalon .

Descanso Beach Club is just around the corner from the Casino Building where you can rent out beach cabana and laze away the day — or take part in ocean sports and adventure tours.

Visiting Two Harbors

Two Harbors (a.k.a., The Isthmus or Isthmus Cove) is a sleepy harbor with a campground, only a few guest properties, one restaurant, one snack bar, and one general store.

If you are standing at the beach in Orange County watching the sun set over the island – Avalon is furthest to your left. Looking to your right, you can see a dip on the west end of the island where the Isthmus sits. The Isthmus and Cat Harbor are what give Two Harbors its name.

The front side of the island, facing the mainland, is where boaters moor at Isthmus Cove.

Once on land, you can take a 10 minute walk and put your toes in Catalina Harbor where boaters must approach from the back side of the island. Cat Harbor has a reputation for being an all-weather harbor because of the wind protection from almost every side. It is usually pleasantly breezy here.

Best Time to Visit Catalina Island

If you were asking about time of day, you’ll see I say – go early in the day for a calmer ocean and so you get the longest amount of time on a day trip to the island.

But if you are talking about time of year, summer is the busiest (obviously) but it’s also a time when the most services are available – and the weather is generally good on the crossing. September and October can be a perfect shoulder season when water temps and air temps are still up, but the crowds have disappeared.

There is a chance you’ll run into some bumpy crossings with Santa Ana winds or surge stirred up from hurricanes down in Mexico. When you are traveling via boat, you just have to be flexible and prepared to postpone or cancel based on a bad weather forecast.

Getting to Catalina Island By Ferry

Unless you have your own boat, visiting the Island isn’t cheap. We regularly purchase gift cards from Costco for the Catalina Express ferry (usually available during the summer).

How much is the ferry to Catalina? You can buy $100 gift card for $80 at Costco. This is the ONLY discount that I’ve ever found. Adult round-trip passage is roughly $83 and the kids are almost $68 round trip. So, for our family of 4, we can save $60 by purchasing three $100 gift cards. The gift cards have a $300 value, but only cost us $240 at Costco.

You must make your reservations BY PHONE if you are going to use this option. They will take your credit card number to reserve/hold your spot, but you actually pay with your gift cards when you pick up your tickets. [ Note: Catalina Express isn’t the only ferry company. It’s just the only one with gift cards at Costco .]

How to Reserve Your Catalina Island Ferry

The first thing you’ll need to decide is: whether you are going to Avalon or Two Harbors .

Ferries go direct to both places, but some of the trips on the schedule for Two Harbors will have you stop at Avalon first. It makes the trip a little longer, but it’s a beautiful ride where you are close up to the island.

If you are going to Avalon , you can leave from San Pedro, Long Beach, Dana Point, or Newport Beach.

If you are going to Two Harbors , you must leave from San Pedro and sometimes you may need to go via a quick stop in Avalon.

We like to leave from San Pedro because there are multiple sailings and it’s the most direct route.

Of course, you can always visit both Avalon and Two Harbors by taking the ferry to Avalon and then taking the Cyclone to Two Harbors (a high speed open air water shuttle that costs about $17 each way).

Or you can choose other options like the safari bus or bicycling to Two Harbors. Nowadays, people even hike the Trans-Catalina Trail in great numbers. 

Where to Park When Going to Catalina on the Ferry

Each ferry terminal has its own parking area.

When we leave for Two Harbors from the San Pedro terminal, parking is outdoors in an open lot under the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Tip: Try not to park under a light fixture or the seagulls will dirty your car with bird droppings while you are away.

If you are headed to Avalon from the Long Beach terminal, there is a parking structure right outside the ferry terminal . Unless you are on the top level, your vehicle will be protected from the elements inside the parking structure.

Parking can exceed $20 per day (and that’s a 24 hour day) – so if you have the option to get a ride to the terminal or take public transportation, you can save yourself some money.

Seasick much?

I never get seasick, but my kids have each had their bouts with it.

Sit outside and face forward (if possible) looking at the horizon in front of the boat. They will tell you that being up top isn’t a good spot, but sometimes it’s the only place to get fresh air so that’s where I’d go.

Dress warmly if you are going to sit outside. Weather is cooler by the ocean and the boat is traveling fast – so there is a lot of wind and moisture to cool you down.

DON’T go inside once the ferry is underway – not even to get ginger ale. Not even to use the restroom. Just a few minutes indoors can ruin you.

Try to leave early! This is my best tip – the ocean is generally calmer early in the day before the wind picks up. An early crossing usually means smooth seas. (Not such a big deal on the way back since the boat pretty much “surfs” back to the mainland with the waves behind it.)

I can’t vouch for any of the hotels. We are a boating family – which is pretty much the equivalent of camping on the water – so I have the advantage of getting to stay on a boat when we visit. 

Check the links on the visitor sites listed below for hotels. If you’re going to spend all that money to get there, why not stay a while?

If you want to stay in Two Harbors, you only have the options of staying on a friend’s boat, campgrounds or camping cabins , Banning House Lodge Bed & Breakfast  or your choice of vacation cottages (Villa Santa Rosa or Villa Santa Cruz).

It's always windy out there. Normally, mornings are calmer and wind picks up in the afternoon. Then, around sunset, things calm down again. You can't really plan for the wind, because it's basically the luck of the draw with the date you pick. Summertime is generally less windy, too.

I'd snorkel in the morning vs. the afternoon. It will be less windy.

Private cabanas at Descanso Beach in Avalon cost $200 a day. An umbrella and two chairs can put you out $50.

Gorgeous murals on the casino, decorate the entrance to the historic art deco Catalina movie theater in Avalon. A tour will cost you $22 and movies at night begin at 7:30 p.m. Movies cost $9 for adults and kids are $7.

Many people have ditched the whole idea of a sojourn on this lovely island, which costs nearly $70 to reach via ferry. And that’s a shame, because this largest of the Channel Islands does have a distinctive, if somewhat kitschy, charm. It also has a split personality.

On the southern end, Avalon remains a jumble of amusing architecture, cheesy T-shirts and day-trippers, despite its advocates’ best efforts to turn it into an elegant, Mediterranean-style resort.

The famous casino, pictured in nearly every postcard, houses a movie theater and museum, not a gambling emporium. But even without a roulette wheel, if you don’t prepare in advance, pricey tours on glass-bottomed boats, snorkeling expeditions, expensive hotels and other costs can quickly set you back hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

Meanwhile, just outside the city limits, it’s possible to get away to areas that feel virtually untouched by man.

The men who founded the resort on Santa Catalina Island first – the Banning brothers of Wilmington fame, and later chewing gum magnate and baseball legend William Wrigley – understood how to attract people to this oasis 22 miles out into the Pacific Ocean.

Over the decades, they developed a resort and publicized it to the world, emphasizing its European flair. They saw it become wildly popular, first with families who camped in tents along the shore all summer long, then with visitors from everywhere, all of whom enjoyed the ocean breezes and beautiful views.

In 1972, in a remarkable gesture, the Wrigley family deeded 88 percent of Catalina’s land to the Catalina Island Conservancy, including 50 miles of coastline and 42,000 acres. That act preserved vast swaths of picturesque grasslands that otherwise certainly would have been swallowed up by vacation homes, hotels and condos.

The conservancy holdings aren’t wilderness like the other Channel Islands: This land was ranched for many years. And its famous bison, brought here by a movie company in 1924, grew to wreak havoc on the island ecology. But outback Catalina still retains a blissful aura of serenity, and the conservancy is working hard to protect creatures found only here, like the Catalina Island fox and quail and the Avalon hairstreak butterfly.

This makes it possible for visitors to enjoy nature and solitude as well as the hubbub of the Avalon resort, even in one day. You can spend hundreds on one of the many tours offered, or take advantage of these money-saving tips to have fun on a limited budget.

Coupons: Save on the ferry trip by using coupons or going on your birthday. For the next year, Catalina Express is holding a 30th anniversary special: On your birthday, you can ride the ferry for free. You can go to Avalon from several ports, or to less-developed Two Harbors from San Pedro only. You must leave on your actual birthday, but you can return up to a month later. And bring your own food and drink on board to avoid buying their snacks, which aren’t tasty anyway. Look for discount coupons online. Right now, you can save $7.50 on your Catalina Express ferry ride with a coupon from AAA auto club. The Catalina Flyer out of Newport Beach is offering $10 off if you take the online survey on its website. Other deals are out there, so surf around a bit and you’ll find them.

Trolley: Take the cute trolley around Avalon. You don’t need to spend $40 an hour to rent a golf cart or take a pricey tour to explore. You can just jump on the little red Avalon Trolley at any of its numerous stops along a route traveling as far up the canyon as the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden. With its wooden ceiling, open-air seating and benches, this trolley has charm on a budget. If you like to walk, take the trolley uphill and then stroll the mile or so down the canyon back to town. While there’s no narration, it’s a chance to see the most popular areas of Avalon at once. There’s a limited schedule in the offseason, and daily in the summer. One-way fares are $2, roundtrip is $4, and it’s $7 for an all-day pass.

Picnic: Yes, you’re saving money on the pricey restaurants, but think of it more as an experience. The grassy Veterans Memorial Park is mere steps from the ferry dock, with picnic tables, charcoal grills and million-dollar views. Or sit at one of the tiny public beaches. Bring your picnic or stop by two Vons stores in Avalon, both a short stroll from the main tourist drag. The smaller Vons Express has a bakery and sells picnic supplies and snacks. You can find it off the green pier; just turn left on Catalina Avenue. The larger (but still small) Vons store has most everything you’ll need, and the advertised specials are the same as on the mainland. It’s at 123 Metropole Ave., not far from the ocean walkway. Note that you cannot bring propane on the ferry, but you can buy it economically at Vons, plus charcoal and wood.

Bike: For around $6, you can bring your bike on the ferry and ride around Avalon. Or you can bring a mountain bike and cruise around the dirt roads at Two Harbors, on the less-developed side of the island. For more serious bikers, bring a helmet and get a permit from the Catalina Island Conservancy to hit the dirt roads inland.

Beach gear: If you don’t want to pay for a private beach or hire a beach chair at $3 an hour, bring your own chair from home and plunk it down on the sand. While you’re at it, maybe you want to bring a cooler bag with a picnic and Thermos in it and an umbrella. Set up camp early, though, because the public beaches get crowded. Or pay $2 for use of the private Descanso Beach on the other side of the casino.

Go midweek or offseason: The weather in Catalina is lovely in late spring and early fall. You can save a lot, not to mention avoiding crowds, by going when other people don’t. Try to avoid Saturdays and Sundays, if you can, and also avoid Avalon on Tuesdays, when the Carnival cruise ship docks and disgorges its passengers.

Snorkeling gear: Catalina is known for excellent snorkeling, but renting gear here is pricey. You can buy a snorkeling set for about $35, or better yet, borrow one from your neighbor. Keep in mind, too, that Avalon’s bay is polluted by sewage from the town, according to recent reports, so consider that when you choose your snorkeling adventure.

See a movie: The historic, art deco Catalina movie theater, on the bottom floor of the casino, is an attraction all its own. You can pay $22 to tour this building during the day, or see it every night at 7:30 p.m., when they screen a movie. $9 for adults, kids are $7.

Go camping: There are five campgrounds where you can avoid the pricey hotel scene and cook your own meals. Fees range from about $15 to $20 per person, depending on day and season. Kids younger than12 are half-price. If you don’t want to haul your own tent on the ferry, you can rent a four-person tent for about $16, and they’ll even set it up for you. Some campgrounds also have tent cabins with cots, wooden floors and shady porches. Campgrounds range from developed with flush toilets at Avalon to remote and primitive walk-in or boat-in sites, so you can find your own level of comfort and privacy. But book early – these are popular and sell out in the summer.

Play ball: Bring your own gear. Next to the ferry dock in Avalon, there’s a public sand volleyball court, basketball court and kids playground with an unbeatable view of the bay. At Two Harbors, on the less-developed isthmus section of Catalina, there are free tennis, volleyball and horseshoes courts.

Take a hike: Whether it’s a leisurely stroll past the baseball park and golf course down Avalon Canyon or the more rigorous Trans-Catalina Trail, there are lots of opportunities to enjoy the scenery on foot here. You have to get a permit to hike outside of town, but the permits are free. Do you like to walk but don’t want to hike uphill? For $10, the Wildlands Express shuttle bus will take you to the Airport in the Sky, where you’ll be on a hilltop at 1,600 feet. Then you can leisurely hike the 10 miles back downhill to sea level at Avalon. The bus leaves Avalon Plaza at 7:30 a.m. There are also remote campgrounds to which you can backpack, where they’ll even have supplies waiting for you, for a fee. Now that’s sweet.

Visit the nature center: The Catalina Island Conservancy, which owns 88 percent of the island, operates a free nature center at Avalon Canyon, across from the Hermit’s Gulch campground. There are exhibits on the natural history of Catalina and the other Channel Islands and hands-on activities for children. We enjoyed watching some of the short films they have on the island and its past, including one on how they relocated hundreds of bison from Catalina to South Dakota. (Don’t worry, they still have bison here, just not as many.) Over the front desk, there’s a live webcam where you can watch bald eagle fledglings in their nest on the island, and hear them, too. The center is about a 20-minute walk from town. You can ride the trolley to get there, walk or take a cab up and then stroll downhill.

Go to the library: If you want to get out of the sun, the Avalon branch of the Los Angeles County Public Library system has 1,200 square feet and is just off the tourist drag. It has interesting local history collections to browse, including historical photos, and 24,000 books, audio and video collections. The library is at 215 Sumner Ave., by the tour bus plaza; it is closed Fridays and Sundays.

Enjoy the art: The island is strewn with public art, from the gorgeous tilework and tiled fountain along the ocean promenade to painted sculptures in the canyon. Even if you don’t plan to go to a movie or take a tour of the casino, it’s worth a look to see the art deco murals and fixtures on its facade.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT CATALINA ISLAND?

The  best time of year to visit Catalina Island  is during the spring and fall . Minimal crowds and excellent weather! I just visited Catalina in October and the weather was perfect, not too hot or cold.

However, if you want to be in the water, doing wet things, like snorkeling , then summer is the time to go. Just be prepared to share the island with many other people doing things in the water.

In winter, you do not want to go to Catalina, but visiting the island works in the other three seasons.

I’ve been to Catalina many times, on day trips with friends via the Catalina Express, overnight with boyfriends, and in style, cruising into the Avalon harbor on one of my best friend’s yachts for a weekend getaway .

When is the best time to visit catalina island.

Spring and fall are ideal seasons to plan a visit to Catalina Island . However, if you’re fond of engaging in outdoor activities, then summer is great time to visit.

Prefer fewer crowds? Then, fall is a better option for you.

In other words, the best time to visit Catalina is when you plan to be there .

This is Southern California, so, you won’t find better weather all year round than you will here. 

From the Author: When I went to book tickets for September – 3 weeks in advance – for the Catalina Express , the good departure times (early am and the latest returns back to mainland California) were sold out. So, even in the off-season, fall, buy your ferry tickets a month or two in advance. I was shocked and had to change our trip to a later date.

Catalina is the perfect destination for a special event, to experience its beautiful scenery, or to walk around the small island for an afternoon. It’s a good thing to visit Catalina Island any time you have the chance.

The island has a bit of everything, fine dining, the iconic Catalina Casino, fun activities like the Catalina Museum , and kelp forests !

The marine life found in  Santa Catalina Island’s kelp forests makes them one of the most biodiverse environments in Southern California.

Where is Catalina Island?

Catalina Island is located off the coast of southern California . It spans approximately 76 square miles , and the Catalina Island Conservancy has safeguarded almost 90% of the island’s area permanently.

The island’s length stretches from Seal Rock located on the eastern end to Land’s End on the western end, aptly named for its location at a distance of about 21 miles.

About 22 miles south-southwest of Los Angeles , Catalina Island is the southernmost island of California’s Channel Islands.

Weather and Seasons on Catalina Island

During spring in Catalina Island, you can expect temperatures to range between 65-70° Fahrenheit. This time of year is excellent for exploring the island and participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and even scuba diving.

The island is less crowded , offering a more peaceful experience as you enjoy the emerging flowers and blossoming trees.

Summer (peak season)

As you’d expect, Catalina’s high season is summer. During the summer months, Catalina Island boasts warm and sunny weather, with temperatures often climbing into the high 70s or low 80s.

The water is at its warmest, making it the perfect time for swimming, kayaking, or just sunbathing on one of the many beautiful beaches.

Keep in mind, though, this is the peak tourist season . Expect the island to be busier and buzzing with activity.

The fall months on Catalina Island are considered by many to be  the best time to visit. This is my favorite time to visit the island – very few crowds and the weather isn’t too hot.

With temperatures ranging from 65 to 70° Fahrenheit, you’ll experience milder weather with fewer crowds.

Take advantage of discounted accommodations in fall. It’s a great time for strolls on the beach, outdoor dining, and other recreational activities such as fishing and sailing.

If you’re seeking tranquility and a more serene atmosphere, the winter months are the ideal time to explore Catalina Island. With temperatures averaging 59-65° Fahrenheit, you’ll enjoy less crowds at popular attractions and a sense of calm.

The average annual water temperature on the coast of Santa Catalina Island is 62° Fahrenheit.

Water temperatures by season:

• Winter – 59° Fahrenheit
• Spring – 60° Fahrenheit

• Fall – 65° Fahrenheit

Minimum and Maximum Water Temperatures

The coolest water temperature – around 56° Fahrenheit – occurs in January, with a maximum temperature in June at 69° Fahrenheit.

How to Get to Catalina Island

The fast and cheapest way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. The ferry departs from the four cities closest to Catalina:

• Newport Beach

The Catalina Express and the Catalina Flyer get you to Catalina on a one-hour ferry ride. The round trip ticket costs around $84. Book your ticket below. Please book in advance, especially during peak season.

I’ve taken the Catalina Express from the San Pedro Port, closest to my home, Los Angeles.

A word about seasickness: I hate boats. I get very seasick. The Catalina Express made me nauseous, but it wasn’t too bad because I stood out on the deck in the open air. I kept my eyes on the horizon and wore wrist pressure point bands that helped.

⛴️ Ferry Transportation

The most popular way to reach Catalina Island is via ferry services from various locations in Southern California.

Here are the four main departure points with their respective ferry services broken down a bit more:

• Los Angeles: The  Catalina Express  operates from ferry terminal in San Pedro, providing a comfortable and quick trip to the island.
• Long Beach: You can also catch the Catalina Express from Long Beach, which offers multiple daily departures.
• Dana Point: The Catalina Express services are available from Dana Point as well, offering a convenient option for visitors from Orange County.
• Newport Beach:  The Catalina Flyer  departs from Newport Beach, providing another option for those seeking a picturesque journey.

The ferry ride to Catalina Island typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours , depending on the departure point and sea conditions.

Remember to book your tickets in advance, especially during the peak tourist season .

🚁 Helicopter Flights

If you’re looking for a faster and more thrilling way to reach Catalina Island, consider taking a helicopter flight.  IEX Helicopters  offer regular services from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Orange County.

These flights can get you to the island in about 15 minutes , providing an unforgettable experience and breathtaking views.

Of course, helicopter flights are more expensive than ferry services! Also, helicopter flights are subject to weather conditions, and last-minute cancellations might occur.

Getting to Catalina Island is simple and convenient, with a few (two to be exact, three is you know someone with a boat) transportation options to suit your preferences and budget.

Whether you choose a scenic ferry ride or an adrenaline-pumping helicopter flight, the journey to the island will be an enjoyable part of your Catalina Island adventure.

Is there Uber on Catalina Island?

No. Uber and Lyft are prohibited on Catalina Island due to regulations on the limit of vehicles.

Nor can you rent a car. The island is small, and cars aren’t allowed.

Scooters are not allowed either.

How To Get Around Catalina Island?

There are several ways to get around on the island without a car.

🚶🏻‍♀️By Foot

The cheapest way to get around the island is by foot. It is a relatively small island.

You can bike, which I did with my sister. We rented a tandem bike and toured all over the island.

Pro-tip:  If you share a tandem, make sure the other person is in shape! Or you’ll be doing all the heavy lifting, as I did with my sister. Luckily she is my little sister and doesn’t weigh much.

🛺 Golf carts, and golf cart tours!

Booking a golf cart tour is the ideal way to explore Catalina Island! With a personal guide, you can visit numerous Avalon landmarks such as Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Garden, Pebbly Beach, and Catalina Casino.

Catalina Transportation Services provides a taxi service if you’re seeking an alternative to Uber or Lyft. Taxis can be found at the ferry terminal exit, and the taxi stand is located at the junction of Metropole Avenue and Crescent Avenue.

There are two bus lines on the island:.

An Island of Two Towns

The Island is made up of two towns, the incorporated city of Avalon on the east end , and the unincorporated village Two Harbors on the west end .

Travel Tip: When you book the Catalina Express or the Catalina Flyer , you can choose which town you’d like to be dropped off in.

Avalon and Two Harbors

Catalina Island offers a perfect escape, and two of its most popular destinations are Avalon and Two Harbors .

Each town provides a unique experience and a variety of attractions that cater to everyone’s preferences.

In this section, we will discuss the various options you have when visiting Avalon and Two Harbors.

Avalon Attractions

Avalon, the island’s largest city and main town, is a bustling hub of activity. With its beautiful harbor and vibrant waterfront, you’ll have plenty to see and do during your visit.

Some attractions to explore in downtown Avalon include:

• The Catalina Casino: This iconic round building offers a glimpse into Avalon’s history, with a stunning ballroom and an art deco theater.

Transportation between Avalon and Two Harbors is not readily available by land. There is a Safari Bus that will take you via land, but it takes about two hours.

A seasonal boat tour called the Cyclone Power Boat takes 40 minutes during the summer months, which is much faster. It costs $18 one-way and is only seasonally available from May to early October.

Two Harbors Activities

Two Harbors is a charming, quieter town on the island’s west end, offering a more laid-back experience than Avalon.

Activities available at Two Harbors include:

• Water activities: Take advantage of crystal-clear waters for snorkeling, kayaking, and other water sports.

As mentioned earlier, the best time to visit Catalina Island is  during the fall season , from September to December. This is when the weather is mild, and the island isn’t crowded, allowing you to fully enjoy all the attractions and activities that Avalon and Two Harbors have to offer without the crowds.

Outdoor Activities on Catalina Island

Catalina Island offers some amazing hiking trails, including the well-known Trans-Catalina Trail .

As you hike, you’ll enjoy spectacular views and explore the island’s diverse landscape.

Bicycles are not allowed on the trail, but you can access various roads for mountain biking.

Summer and early fall are ideal times for jumping into the cool, clean waters of Catalina Island.
