48-Hour Itinerary

48 Hours in Columbus: The Ultimate Itinerary

columbus ohio weekend trip

The capital city of Ohio boasts all the friendliness and hospitality you’d expect of a major Midwestern metropolis, but what you may not know is that Columbus is also one of the most surprisingly stylish fashion centers in the United States. Trailing only New York and Los Angeles in its number of resident fashion designers (many of whom cut their teeth locally at the Columbus College of Art and Design), Columbus rolls out the red carpet to savvy fashionistas with chic boutiques lining the Short North Arts District and upscale open-air shopping centers anchored by premium retailers. Add in stunning green spaces, world-class cultural destinations, a wow-worthy culinary scene, fun kid-friendly attractions and the Ohio State University campus, and you’ve got all the makings of a memorable weekend getaway. These are some of the best suggestions to include on your ultimate 48-hour trip to Columbus, Ohio.

Day 1: Morning

9 a.m.: After your arrival into the John Glenn International Columbus Airport (named for the famed hometown astronaut), rent a car, grab a rideshare, or hop on the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) AirConnect bus service for quick transportation directly into the heart of the city. Home to the Greater Columbus Convention Center and the Nationwide Arena, downtown Columbus is also home to a wide variety of hotel franchises to choose from for accommodations in a range of price points. Get your bearings and shake off any lingering jet lag with a quick stroll around the Arena District or a run, walk, or CoGo bikeshare ride along the scenic Scioto Trail greenway that skirts the north/south-running Scioto River on the western edge of downtown through parks, under bridges, and past landmarks.

11:30 a.m.: As you get hungry for lunch, set a course to the vibrant historic North Market in the Short North Arts District, and let your appetite run wild. Within a covered open marketplace that dates back to 1876, this eclectic resident lineup of more than 30 local food vendors and merchants proposes all sorts of nosh to consider from soup to nuts, as well as bagels, baked goods, produce, an array of ethnic cuisines, meats, seafood, and coffee. If you can’t find something to eat here, you’re just out of luck. Nibble and sample away to your heart’s content, and then cap off your lunchtime feast with a scoop of Brown Butter Almond Brittle, Brambleberry Crisp or decadent Darkest Chocolate from the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams stand; all products are made right here in Columbus.

Day 1: Afternoon

1 p.m.: After lunching at North Market, you’re now fueled up to shop and gallery hop ‘til you drop along High Street, the lifeblood thoroughfare of the Short North Arts District. Anchored by a series of fanciful steel arches, the epicenter of Columbus’s fashion scene claims some of the best boutiques and forward-thinking art galleries in town. Browse through customer service-oriented shops like Tigertree, Rowe, Ladybird, and Happy Go Lucky Her for apparel and accessories that’ll have you looking like you just stepped off a runway. Homage is the place to find quirky retro T-shirts, and relive your childhood at Big Fun through a whimsical and overwhelming inventory of vintage toys, board games, and collectible figures. Short North Gallery Hop events on the first Saturday of each month provide the perfect occasion to duck in and out of local makers’ studios at will to enjoy exhibitions, live music, food, and drink.

3:30 p.m.: Cool off and take a breather by popping in the contemporary PIzzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, sited within a gorgeous three-story historic Beaux Arts office building on the edge of Goodale Park. Highlighting a diverse and ever-evolving rotation of holdings from the personal collection of local philanthropists Ron and Ann Pizzuti, the facility also hosts thought-provoking displays, lectures, and traveling exhibits.

Day 1: Evening

6 p.m.: It’s happy hour, and Columbus boasts tons of fun watering holes in which to wet your whistle, from trendy mixology-driven hotspots to casual neighborhood dives and beer gardens. One of the most popular perches in the city, the see-and-be-seen Lincoln Social Rooftop lounge shakes up creative and classic cocktails to enjoy al fresco with views of the bustling Short North district nine stories down below. Or pop into the Short North Pint House for a cold beer and a few laughs with friends in a festive outdoor courtyard.

8 p.m.: Round out your first day in Columbus with a leisurely dinner. You can’t go wrong with any restaurant in the Cameron Mitchell family. From humble beginnings, this hometown restaurateur has created an upscale dining empire that now features 15 different concepts and three dozen locations in Ohio and across several other states, all constructed on the tenets of top-shelf food quality and service. The sleek Guild House turns out plates of farm-to-table cuisine, the Pearl specializes in oysters and fresh seafood, and Marcella’s delights with updated Italian comfort foods like charcuterie, cheeses, pizzas, pastas, and delectable desserts. Downtown, the Four-Diamond M at Miranova impresses guests with its faultless surf and turf presentations and its classy fine-dining atmosphere.

Day 2: Morning

8:30 a.m.: Some of the best breakfast eats in town, the pillowy sweet pancake balls at Katalina’s are made with locally produced Fowler’s Mills flour wrapped around Nutella, apple-pumpkin butter or dulce de leche fillings and served alongside thick-cut bacon for salty-sweet flavor perfection. Old school in the best possible way, Jack and Benny’s serves up omelets, hash browns and other diner classics with the same warm welcome customers have come to expect since the 1950s. Meanwhile, Fox in the Snow tempts patrons with sophisticated French pastries, scones, biscuits, and donuts, all washed down with skillfully prepared coffee drinks.

10 a.m.: Spend the morning communing with Mother Nature at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens beside the expansive Franklin Park. The Victorian-style John F. Wolfe Palm House took shape back in 1895 and today is home to lush greenhouse displays of living foliage. Across the 13-acre site, guests can also admire seasonal butterflies, stroll through painstakingly landscaped outdoor green spaces and a community garden, and enjoy viewing a lovely collection of works by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Day 2: Afternoon

12 p.m.: Break for lunch at one of Columbus’s many casual mid-day eateries. With a handful of locations scattered around town, Northstar Café, the signature veggie burger stands out amid a well-edited menu of brick oven-fired pizzas, salads, and sandwiches. Mediterranean fare with flair is the name of the game at Brassica in the Short North district; think fresh hummus plates and pita sandwiches stuffed with falafel, chicken shawarma, or house-pickled vegetables. And Brown Bag Deli is the place to go for flavorful specialty sandwiches like the Weezie’s Cheesie, Ben’s Black and Blue, the meaty Spice of Life, or an exemplary Cuban.

2 p.m.: Keep the cultural vibe alive with a wander through the world-class Columbus Museum of Art. Originally known as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts at the time of its founding in the 1870s, this encyclopedic art museum underwent a massive expansion and renovation in 2015 that added the airy new 50,000 square-foot Walter Wing. Significant holdings cover European art, American art, folk art, glass art, and regional works by Columbus-area creators.

4 p.m.: If the lovingly manicured Topiary Garden on the grounds of the Old Deaf School Park looks familiar, that’s because it’s actually a life-sized recreation of “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte” by Impressionist artist Georges Seurat (on permanent display at the Art Institute of Chicago and featured in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”). The park is free to visit and open daily to the public dawn to dusk year-round, but summer’s the best time to go if you want to see the living recreation in full bloom.

Day 2: Evening

6 p.m.: Defined by historical details and old-world charm, Columbus’s German Village just to the south of downtown accommodates brick sidewalks, quaint parks, independent businesses, thoughtfully preserved architecture and a thriving LGBTQ community. Take your time for a walk around the neighborhood before settling in to one of the district’s diverse restaurant choices for dinner. For an authentic taste of hearty German spaetzle, schnitzel, and strudel, belly up to Schmidt’s Restaurant und Sausage Haus, a Columbus dining institution since 1886. Prost! Or explore the flavors of Spanish tapas at Barcelona, feast on modern American fare at Lindey’s, or squeeze in a date night at romantic G. Michael’s Bistro and Bar.

7:30 p.m.: The largest resident ensemble theater troupe in the country, Shadowbox Live presents an ongoing schedule of cabaret-style productions with food and drink served before the show and during intermission. Formed in 1988, the 60-member company performs out of a dedicated German Village-adjacent space in the Brewery District. Blending rock opera and dance performance with sketch comedy and new media, every production is guaranteed to be unique and provides material for scintillating post-show discussion.

Day 3: Morning

8:30 a.m.: Wind down your time in Columbus by treating yourself to a sumptuous brunch. Driven by seasonality, Skillet delivers a brunch menu of hearty American favorites with a twist—biscuits and chorizo gravy, a brisket and potato omelet, grilled figs, and lemon soufflé pancakes. An extensive selection of omelets, pancakes, Benedicts, and breakfast sandwiches makes the decision-making process difficult at the sunny Blunch urban café. Or head to Pistacia Vera for brunch with continental flair—quiche, smoked salmon tartare, exquisite croissants, and picture-perfect macarons in a rainbow of colors and flavors.

10 a.m.: Visitors of all ages can feel like kids again after a couple hours of exploration at the Center of Science and Industry, “COSI” to locals. Wander through the awe-inspiring dinosaur gallery, a DC Superheroes exhibit, a giant screen theater, the largest planetarium in Ohio, and lots of interactive STEM-focused activities to engage and educate young minds.

1 p.m.: Wrap up your Columbus journey by paying tribute to our nation’s heroes at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, opened in late 2018. From the approach, the building cuts a dashing figure on the banks of the Scioto River with a striking arched concrete and glass architectural design. Inside, the Core Exhibit galleries honor veterans who’ve served in all four branches of United States military service in times of war and peace. The park-like grounds that surround the museum offer an opportunity for quiet reflection and one last glimpse of the downtown skyline.

One Weekend In Columbus, Ohio: A 3-day Columbus Itinerary

Ohio’s capital city of Columbus has been growing bigger and bigger throughout the last decade and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the whole nation. The city has an arty and sporty vibe, while still keeping its original country charm. Columbus is a city worth the visit, and this guide will show you exactly how to spend one weekend in Columbus, Ohio.

Table of Contents

How do I get to Columbus?

To get to the city of Columbus, visitors have a few options; by car, plane, or bus. If arriving by plane there are 2 different airports to choose from, John Glenn International Airport and Rickenbacker.

John Glenn International Airport (CLM) is usually the best option. The airport is located within the city, about a 15-minute drive from downtown.

Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) tends to have cheaper flights but is a smaller airport located outside of the city limits, about a 30-minute drive from downtown.

Visitors can drive themselves if they are within distance, Columbus has a lot of public parking areas located in the city, or opt for the Greyhound bus. Columbus has a Greyhound Bus station located in the downtown area, so depending on your original destination, there may be a route available.

Tip! If renting a car, be sure to check out the Discover Cars Search Engine for the best deals in Columbus!

What is the best time to visit Columbus?

The best time to visit Columbus is between the months of April and October. Columbus is known for its abundance of sports teams, especially The Ohio State University Buckeyes. During this time there are a number of sporting events going on, as well as other various events, festivals, concerts, and celebrations.

Due to its Midwestern location in the United States, Columbus has all four seasons and tends to have pretty stable weather throughout the year. Especially during fall, temperatures and weather conditions are almost perfect for outdoor activities.

Where should I stay in Columbus?

Columbus is filled with a lot of exciting and unique different neighborhoods. Due to The Ohio State University being located within Columbus, the city itself has a high number of different cultural and ethnic groups all over the city.

During your Columbus weekend trip, the most recommended areas to stay in are The Short North and The Italian Village . Both are located within the downtown region. If traveling on a budget, go a little further north to the University District, which has more budget-friendly options due to the high number of young and broke college students.

The Short North, Italian Village, and University District are all within walking distance of various restaurants, bars, shops, activities, arenas, and stadiums. There is plenty of parking available so if you do opt to stay in a different neighborhood, this is a great starting point for a day of sightseeing downtown.

Sample 3-Day Columbus Weekend Itinerary

I’m so excited to share how to spend one weekend in Columbus, Ohio. It’s such a cool Midwestern gem!

Day 1 in Columbus:

ohio theatre during one weekend in columbus

To begin your visit, a great place to start is the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Filled with artwork and hundreds of species of plants and flowers, the Franklin Valley Conservatory is a very popular place. It is designed to bring life and fun throughout the entire year and caters to all seasons. This is also a great place to relax and spend a peaceful and serene morning.

Head to The German Village next for an afternoon of history and sightseeing. There is a large number of German Heritage in Columbus, still to this day. Be sure to stop at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus for lunch, and don’t forget dessert! Schmidt’s has the biggest and best cream puffs you will ever see.

Since Columbus is such an artsy city, The Ohio Theater shouldn’t be missed. Spend your evening in the heart of downtown enjoying live entertainment with a beautiful view. The theater has been hosting events here for over 100 years including broadway shows, ballets, theater productions, and classic films. Even the Beach Boys have performed at the Ohio Theater.

Day 2 in Columbus:

scioto park in columbus ohio

If visiting Columbus in June-October, be sure to stop at The North Market . Going back over 140 years, The North Market will be one of the biggest and most pristine farmers’ markets you’ve ever seen. It is very high quality, with an array of fresh and unique foods and treats.

After the hustle and bustle of the morning market, spend your afternoon at the Scioto Mile . It is one of the best outdoor areas in the city, hosting various events, concerts, and festivals, and has amazing views of the city . If you are visiting during the summer, there will be events happening here on a weekly basis.

Even if there are no events occurring, you can still explore the miles of trails along the river, rent a bike from the CoGo Bike Share, or go on a guided kayak or canoe trip.

Ohio residents are very proud of their sports teams, especially in Columbus. Try to spend an evening at some kind of sporting event. Even if you aren’t into sports, the atmosphere alone makes for a night of pure fun.

Depending on when you visit, spectators can watch hockey at Nationwide Arena , football at the OSU Shoe , or soccer at Crew Stadium.

Day 3 in Columbus:

Columbus skyline at sunset

On the final day of your visit to Columbus, spend your morning at the Easton Town Center. This is also a great place to pick up any last-minute souvenirs or trinkets to take home. Easton is an outdoor shopping center designed like an old town,  filled with shops restaurants, attractions, and even an iMax movie theater.

A visit to Columbus can’t be complete without visiting at least one museum. Depending on your interests, there is a lot to choose from. The Columbus Museum of Art is the most popular, and perfect for history or art lovers.

Another new popular museum is The Otherworld . Not only a museum but an interactive art installation filled with colors and surprises in every room.  It’s open Wednesdays-Mondays and you will need a reservation before visiting!

To complete your trip, spend a night on the town exploring the Short North and Arena District. By far the most attractive and entertaining areas of the city, this downtown region is packed with galleries, shops, bars, and restaurants.

It is the biggest draw to the whole city and is the perfect way to complete your trip. Head to the Lincoln Social Rooftop for one last dinner and epic views of the Columbus skyline.

Fun Weekend Getaway in Columbus: Ohio’s Capital City

  • Martina Johnson
  • 6 minute read

In case you’re unfamiliar, allow us to introduce you to Columbus, Ohio, the 14th largest city in the country and one of the best cities in the Midwest for a weekend getaway per U.S. News & World Report. This bustling city is within a day’s drive for more than half of the U.S. population. It offers delicious dining options, both unique boutiques and popular retailer shopping, festivals, sporting events, and much more.

We were recently hosted for a weekend by Experience Columbus and had a blast. Read below to steal our itinerary and trip suggestions.

First things first, we checked into Hotel LeVeque. This hotel is absolutely gorgeous! In fact, it was voted the most beautiful hotel in Ohio in 2017 by Architectural Digest . The suites are spacious and well-decorated, but the stunner is the bathrooms. The showers are huge, and you can have the water come out four different ways. It’s truly a delightful experience getting ready for the day here. Fun Fact, we stayed here for our wedding and did our first look photos in the lobby.

360 View of the Amazing Shower at Hotel LeVeque

Kick the weekend off with some live jazz at Ginger Rabbit . It’s a speakeasy-style cocktail lounge featuring light bites and live music from Tuesday to Saturday.

Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge 17 Buttles Ave, Columbus, OH 43215  IG Handle: GingerrabbitJazz

Then Grab dinner at a local favorite, Third and Hollywood . They feature classic American fare with a wonderful atmosphere and great service. If you go, be sure to get the Iron Skillet Cheddar Herb Biscuits and Housemade Ginger Ale. I loved the biscuits, and Leslie thought the ginger ale was exceptional! If you are in the mood for something more casual, try their sister restaurants, Brassica or NorthStar. Brassica is one of my favorite fast-casual restaurants, and NorthStar has one of the best Black Bean burgers.

Third & Hollywood 1433 W. Third Ave. Grandview Heights, OH 43212 IG Handle: ThirdAndHollywood

If you want to check out the nightlife before closing out the night, you’ll have plenty of options.

Lincoln Social Rooftop (Upscale), Land-Grant Brewing Company (Causal), Budd Dairy Food Hall (Rooftop & Live Music), and Stories on High (Upscale and Reservation Required) are among some of what was recommended to us. You can also click here to learn more about the rooftop bars in Columbus.

We met up with my brother at Lincoln Social and enjoyed some mocktails and good conversation before closing out the evening. They also have a pretty big food and cocktail menu. We went to Stories on High with my sister another night and really liked it. It’s currently the tallest rooftop in Columbus and has an elevated experience perfect for date night. We were too full to eat, but my sister and brother-in-law absolutely loved the food.

Rise and Shine for a hearty and healthy breakfast at Emmett’s in their Open Air location, a historic building that once was a school. I had the Schiller Bowl with smoked salmon and a Chai Tea, and Leslie had the Breakfast Burrito. We both really enjoyed our breakfast and got some oatmeal raisin power bites for the road.

Emmett’s at Open Air 2571 Neil Avenue Columbus, OH 43202 IG Handle: EmmettsCafe

Get your culture and art fix at the Columbus Museum of Art . We were happy to see a piece by Kehinde Wiley, the same artist who did the iconic painting of President and First Lady Obama. We also loved that in between all the Picasso pieces and other famous artists, there was a ton of art by local talent that was creative and thought-provoking. There are upcoming special exhibitions from Wendy Red Star and Lesley Vance on view April 21-Sep 3, 2023.

360 Views from the Columbus Museum of Art.

Grab lunch at BrewDog Franklinton , and don’t leave without the Cauliflower wings. They were SO good. This brewery restaurant is inside a refurb of an old car mechanics shop and offers a street-level patio along with a roof terrace and bar. Along with plenty of outdoor seating options, they have over 48 taps of fresh craft beer!

We don’t drink beer, but Leslie really liked the NA (non-alcoholic) beer option. Besides the cauliflower wings, we kept it simple and ordered a burger and chicken sandwich. But our waitress recommended the Buffalo loaded fries and the Korean loaded fries. Both sounded super tasty.

Nerd out at COSI , the nation’s number one science museum. They currently have Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures exhibit, which features authentically recreated replicas of the items in King Tutankhamun’s tomb exactly as they were discovered in 1922. While the museum is a cool experience, there were times when we felt like we were invading the children’s space. So if you are going with only adults, we recommend checking out COSI After Dark which is a 21+ experience offered once a month and has unique themes.

COSI 333 W Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215 IG Handle: CosiScience

If you prefer to skip the museum, get your shopping on at Easton , an open-air mall with over 240 shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. It’s so good that it was voted one of the top retail experiences in America. For more unique finds and to support small/ local businesses, you can also shop the boutiques in the Short North . If it’s the first Saturday of the month, you’ll have the pleasure of partaking in the Gallery Hop , which features new gallery exhibitions, street performers, special events, food, and drinks throughout the Short North District.

Easton Towne Center 160 Easton Town Ctr, Columbus, OH 43219 IG Handle: @EastonTownCtr

Relax a bit, then grab dinner at Del Mar SoCal Kitchen . The cuisine is inspired by Southern California but is known for its fresh and local ingredients. The sushi was fresh, tasty, and all-around great! I had two of the Hawaiian rolls. Leslie had the Beef Chow Fun, which is a favorite of the executive chef and owner.

Del Mar SoCal Kitchen 705 N High Street, Columbus, OH 43215 IG Handle: @DelMarColumbus

Check out the nation’s largest full-time resident theatre ensemble, Shadowbox Live. Performances include music, sketch comedy, documentaries, and dance.

Shadowbox Live 503 S Front Street, Columbus, OH 43215 IG Handle: @ShadowboxLive

Another comedy option is the Columbus Funny Bone in Easton.

Start the day with brunch at The Guild House . This beautiful restaurant serves up creative American fare in the heart of the Short North District. I tried their truffle egg entree, and it was delicious! So unique and tasty.

The Guild House 624 N High Street, Columbus, OH 43215 IG Handle: @GuildHouseColumbus

Enjoy some time outdoors in one of Columbus’ Green Spaces! There are over 20 parks and recreational centers to choose from! We enjoyed our time strolling through Topiary Garden, a living recreation of a famous post-impressionist painting by George Seurat. Other good options are Scioto Audubon Metro Park which features 120 acres of green space with a great view of the Columbus skyline, and Quarry Trails Metro Park, Columbus’ newest Metro Park and the future site of the nation’s only urban Via Ferrata, a popular style of climbing.

Given that it was a holiday weekend when we went, many of the businesses were closed on our last day, so we spent the rest of the afternoon with family. But there is so much that we want to see and do on our next visit! Below are some of the top things we’re interested in checking out on the next trip. Feel free to add them to your itinerary, and let us know what you think!

Tips for Visiting Columbus

Columbus is a superb city to visit any time of year as there is always something going on and more things and attractions pop up around the city each year. If you have never been to Columbus before, doing some research ahead of time can eliminate stress and frustration before it even arrives.

To make the most out of your trip to Columbus and know what to expect before and upon arrival of your trip, keep the following tips in mind:

September and October are the best times of year to visit Columbus. Not only are temperatures comfortable and cooled down after the hot summer months, but there are a number of this to do this time of year, such as sporting events (especially OSU football) and festivals.

April is also a great time of year to visit, with blooming flowers around the city and lower crowds and prices. If you love cherry blossoms, then you’ll be delighted to discover that there’s an annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which is held in the city around the middle of April.

Bicentennial Park

Columbus is a car city, and the best way to get around is by car, taxi, or Uber. If you don’t have a car or are on a tighter budget, there is a public bus transit around the city using COTA, and a wide variety of bike rentals as well.

Columbus is an overall safe city for visitors and is no more dangerous than visiting your hometown. You shouldn’t have any major issues as long as you pay attention to your surroundings, lock your car, keep an eye on your belongings, and generally follow the same safety precautions as you would at home.

Columbus 3-Day Itinerary Sample

Whether you are looking to spend your 3-days in Columbus exploring, relaxing, learning, or taste-testing mouthwatering cuisine and local brews, Columbus is a place that truly has something for everyone to enjoy, no matter your age or interests.

Morning: On your first morning in Columbus, wake up early to catch the sunrise around the Scioto Mile. The Scioto Mile sits on more than 175 acres, encompasses a number of parks, and is one of the best outdoor attractions in the city.

It is a trail which lies on both banks of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus and connects parks. As well as miles of walking and biking paths along the Scioto River, the area hosts numerous events, festivals, and celebrations during the summertime, in addition to the famous fountain, climbing walls, and incredible city views.

The must-see spot of the Scioto Mile is the Scioto Mile Fountain, which features interactive splash pads and pretty river vistas. If you don’t want to spend too much time wandering the Scioto Mile, prioritise heading to the Fountain.

scioto park

After enjoying some of the Scioto Mile, head to The Statehouse, which is one of the most important landmarks in the city. To learn more about politics, the general assembly, or to just marvel at the Greek Revival architectural design of the building, touring the Ohio Statehouse is a great activity.

Tours are available in the mornings and afternoons every week, Monday-Friday. You’ll want to book a visit in advance and be prepared to go through airport-style security to enter. Even if you don’t visit the interior of the building, the beautiful façade is a must-see while in Columbus.

Statehouse Columbus

Next, it’s time to visit the The Columbus Museum of Art. This cultural institution is just a 15 minute walk from the Statehouse (or a 5 minute drive) and showcases the huge blend of cultures that are in Columbus and the entirety of the Midwest.

Afternoon: A visit to Columbus is never complete without an afternoon of exploring in the German Village. Start at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus for lunch, a delicious and widely popular German restaurant, and then venture around and learn about the German history of Columbus.

The German population increased in Ohio during the 19th century and today the district still retains a European ambiance, as well as being one of the most thriving and interesting neighborhoods in the city.

German village

Evening: Columbus is home to a wide range of breweries and distilleries with an array of delicious craft beers. Head to Plank’s Bier Garten in the Brewery District for a quick dinner and pint before setting off brewery hopping around some of the city’s finest establishments.

Some of the most popular breweries and distilleries in Columbus include The Daily Growler – German Village/Brewery District and Antiques on High (you can buy beer flights here). One of the more hidden gems of the Brewery District is the larger than life sized statue of Gambrinus: King of Beer which can be found at 605 S. Front St., Columbus.

craft beer

Morning: On your second morning in Columbus, grab a coffee and head straight to the North Market. The North Market is a huge farmers market downtown, possibly the biggest you’ve ever seen, with the freshest products possible.

The market is more than 140 years old and has been more than just a market for residents, but is a place to meet with friends and family, shop for local crafts and handmade trinkets, and taste the huge mixture of cultures throughout different cuisine and spices. You can easily grab lunch at the market if you spend all morning there.

Afternoon: If you are traveling to Columbus with kids, consider spending an afternoon at COSI. The Center for Science & Industry takes learning to the next level, with fun and interactive attractions throughout the establishment.

Kids who have an interest in science will enjoy exhibits such as the dinosaur gallery, big science park, and fascinating planetariums. While it is aimed more toward younger children, adults who are young at heart will have just as much fun!

If you don’t mind heading out of the city a bit and want to visit a cultural spot which is a little more out of the ordinary, head to one of the newest museums in the city, the Otherworld. It takes around two or three hours to fully enjoy Otherworld.

Not just a museum, but a huge interactive art installation consisting of magical designs, colors and blacklights, surreal landscapes, and multi-sensory entertainment. Explore freely and interact with more than 40 scenes in this exciting mixed-reality playground.

otherworld

Evening: Make reservations at the Guild House for dinner, then spend the evening immersing into the exciting nightlife of the Short North Arts District in downtown Columbus.

Not only are there various bars and gastronomical establishments lined down the streets, but also local boutiques, art galleries, and live music happening somewhere almost every weekend.

For those looking to party the night away, venture down a few blocks to the Arena District for even more bars, pubs, and clubs to hop in and out of.

Morning: After a long night out on the town, start your final morning in Columbus by wandering around the Franklin Park Valley Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. Founded in 1895, it’s one of the city’s biggest attractions and is altered each and every season for new experiences each year.

The beautiful space takes a couple of hours to explore if you truly want to enjoy everything on offer. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city by relaxing in a calm environment, surrounded by immersive artwork, and loads of wildlife and flora, and fauna.

Be sure to check out the butterfly garden as well, known as the Blooms & Butterflies exhibit. It’s the best way to finish an exciting weekend in Columbus and is an attraction that mustn’t be skipped over.

Franklin Park Conservatory

Afternoon: After a relaxing morning head east of downtown to the Easton Town Center. Not only is Easton one of the coolest shopping centers in the Midwest, but it’s also designed like an old-fashioned city, allowing visitors to step back in time with all the modernity of today.

There are hundreds of restaurants and shops to explore and indulge in, as well as attractions such as ice skating, an iMax theater, and live performances in the evenings.

Evening: On the last in the thrilling capital city, plan ahead and reserve tickets to a ballgame. While football is definitely the most attractive, as Columbus is home to the Buckeyes at The Ohio State University, there is a wide range of options for all spots fans any time of the year.

Consider heading to Crew Stadium for soccer fans, or head to the Arena District and catch an NHL Bluejackets hockey game. Ohio has some of the best sports teams in the Midwest and there is bound to be a night of celebrations happening after a big win.

If you followed along with our three-day itinerary, then you’ve probably had a fantastic introduction to the city so far. However, there is so much more. If you choose to extend your stay in Columbus for longer than a 3-day period or are already planning to return to this incredible city, here are more things to see and do.

  • See a show at the Ohio Theatre: The Ohio Theatre has been up and running for more than 100 years and is a great place to spend an evening in the city. The outstanding architectural structure only intensifies live entertainment, such as ballet performances, phones, and some of the most beloved touring Broadway series, such as the infamous Nutcracker , Wicked, or the Lion King .
  • Kingmakers Board Game Parlor: On rainy days in the city or when you are just looking to relax and unwind, head over to the Kingmakers Board game Parlor. Here, visitors can chill and catch up with friends, while playing the most cherished and beloved board games of old times. It’s one of the most unique places in the city allowing all guests to feel just like a child. Plus, there’s beer and wine.
  • Columbus Architectural Salvage: Something very interesting and unique to the city of Columbus is the Columbus Architectural Salvage. Browse around all the things available, while many objects may come from landfills, as the saying goes, one man’s trash is in another man’s treasure. It’s a great window into the past as it features old household appliances, outdated vintage jewelry and trinkets, and a reminder of how some things, only get better with age.

Columbus has a lot of diverse neighborhoods. The best places to stay when visiting Columbus for a 3-day trip are the Italian Village or Short North neighborhoods, the University District, Clintonville, and Downtown. Here are some of the top hotel recommendations based on location and price:

Budget: This hostel is a little bit of a way from most of Columbus’ main attractions but is one of the cheapest places to stay in town. Located in the University Area of town, there are laid-back dorm rooms and free Wi-Fi is available. Check prices and availability here.

Mid-range: This hotel is literally just across the street from the Ohio Statehouse and boasts amenities such as a bar and restaurant onsite, bicycle hire, baggage storage, and free Wi-Fi. Check prices and availability here.

Highlights include a fitness center, air conditioning, and a great location. Check prices and availability here.

With so much to see and do paired with an exciting and vibrant atmosphere, It’s easy to see why Columbus is rising in popularity and growing into a thriving metropolitan American hub.

Established in 1812, Columbus is Ohio’s capital city. Ranked as the 15th largest city in the United States, numerous global corporations have headquarters in Columbus. Wendy’s , White Castle , Bath & Body Works , Express , Victoria Secret’s , Thirty-One Gifts , Nationwide Insurance and NetJets are a few of the major corporations that call Columbus home. Columbus has been ranked as the 3rd most fashion-forward city in the United States, ranks 4th in the country for craft beer production and constantly tops lists as one of the happiest cities in the United States! Columbus has even been ranked as one of the most intelligent cities in the world (both in 2013 and 2014) and was the only U.S. city in the Top 7! That’s pretty impressive for an unassuming Midwestern city that most people by-pass for a vacation destination! But for those that live in Columbus, we know just how awesome Columbus really is! In fact, almost anyone you meet, who lives in Columbus, will gladly give you directions and personally guide you to their favorite Columbus hot-spot!

Here are a few of my favorite areas of Downtown Columbus:

~ German Village

This historic neighborhood was initially platted in 1814 by German immigrants. Thankfully, residents has preserved this wonderful slice of Columbus history, welcoming guests to stroll the charming cobblestone streets of this historic village! Favorite things to do in German Village are to visit Schiller Park , stroll the cobblestone streets and enjoy the facades of the historic homes, explore the thirty-two rooms of The Book Loft (my favorite bookstore in Columbus!), dine at Schmidt’s (providing authentic German food since 1886), Thurman’s Cafe (the largest burger in Columbus), Easy Street Cafe , Dirty Franks Hot Dog Palace or Katzinger’s Deli , grab a sweet treat from Kittie’s Cakes (say hello to Linus, the owners’ adorable Golden Retriever) and enjoy a macaron and coffee at Pistacia Vera .

*Looking for more historical places to visit in Columbus? Check out the Columbus Historical Society (located in COSI), the Ohio History Center & Ohio Village or take a tour of the Ohio Statehouse .

~ Short North

This vibrant, artsy neighborhood is re-defining Columbus’ art scene, with an abundance of art galleries, non-traditional art venues and street art found on numerous buildings throughout the district. Favorite things to do in the Short North are to stroll the streets, gallery hopping, boutique shopping, explore Gooddale Park and visit the North Market (highly recommend a visit to North Market and its just a few blocks away from Short North). Numerous restaurants and bars are located throughout the Short North; some of my favorite restaurants are Bakersfield , Condado , Happy Greek , Hubbard Bar & Grille , Hyde Park , Marcella’s , Martini , The Guild House and The Pearl . Favorite bars in the Short North are Arch City Tavern , Brothers Drake , Denmark , Eleven , Mouton and Wine on High . The Short North district definitely is the most vibrant area of Downtown Columbus!

10 Day Trips from Columbus, Ohio—Local’s Guide

pinterest pin for day trips from Columbus, Ohio

People love to joke about how there’s nothing to do in Ohio, and as a native Ohioan, I’ve made my fair share of those jokes. While Ohio doesn’t have the most varied landscapes compared to the coasts, there are still plenty of interesting places to go and things to do.

I was born and raised in Columbus, so I’ve had plenty of time to explore the surrounding area. Here are some unique places to take a day or weekend trip, all within 2 hours of the city. Stay till the end for a free, interactive map!

Day/Weekend Trips from Columbus, Ohio

Note: Ohio doesn’t have a very robust public transport system, so all the time/distance estimates are based on driving times.

1. Yellow Springs

Distance: 1 hour Best for: small town charm, hippie vibes, hiking

The town of Yellow Springs in the fall with a yellow-leaf tree on the left and a mint building on the right with people selling tie dye shirts

Yellow Springs was originally founded in 1825 as a socialist utopian society. These days, it’s a colorful hippie town full of unique shops and restaurants. Rose & Sal is my personal favorite with its wide selection of vintage decor.

If you enjoy hiking, there’s around 11 miles of easy to moderate trails across three parks, including the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, John Bryan State Park, and Clifton Gorge .

Clifton Gorge is my favorite, as it has the most dramatic lanscapes with the layers of worn-away rock and turquoise waters. Nearby, you’ll find the 19th-century Clifton Mill where you can buy freshly-ground flour, take quaint photos, or have a meal overlooking the water. (Clifton is technically another town, but it’s only a few miles away).

See my post on things to do in Yellow Springs for more recommendations!

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this two-story cabin in Clifton.

2. Walnut Woods Metro Park

Distance: 30 minutes Best for: easy walks and photoshoots

Back of woman walking on a paved trail through a forest of tall pine trees at Tall Pines Area Walnut Woods

If you’re looking for a pleasant walk or photoshoot location, you can get both at Walnut Woods. In this metro park, you’ll find paved and unpaved trails, with one of the paved trails going through the stunning Tall Pines Area . This part of the forest feels especially peaceful and almost otherwordly. The impressive trees make for a lovely photo backdrop, and you’ll frequently see engagement or family shoots in the woods. If you do come for a photoshoot, be sure to be mindful of others using the trails.

For a similar forest experience, you can also visit Oak Openings Preserve Metro Park near Toledo. The park there is much larger and has more trails, but is further away (about 2.5 hours).

3. Hocking Hills

Distance: 1 hour Best for: hiking, antiques

Me with my back facing the camera looking at Rock House

Hocking Hills is a classic destination, and some of you may be groaning since you’ve been there countless times on school and family trips.

Most people do the Old Man’s Cave trail, which is just over 1 mile total and features some small waterfalls and interesting rock formations. You can also extend the hike to Cedar Falls, which is 6 miles round-trip.

If you’ve been-there-done-that, consider some of the other trails in Hocking Hills! I enjoyed the short 1-mile hike at Rock House , which had some impressive sandstone caves. Cantwell Cliffs is another 2-mile hike that has some scenic views. You can also try ziplining with Hocking Hills Canopy Tours .

If you like antiques, make a stop at the Logan Antique Mall on your way home. There are countless booths with quirky housewares and decorations.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at Hocking Cottage or this quaint guesthouse .

4. Mansfield

Distance: 1 hour Best for: thrifting, small town charm

City News neon sign in downton Mansfield Ohio

In my opinion, Mansfield isn’t a super interesting destination in itself, but it’s home to an incredible Volunteers of America thrift store. The one at 1280 Park Ave W is full of affordable and stylish finds. I purchased a handful of things from there four years ago, and I still regularly wear all of those pieces.

While the town itself is small, there’s a cute carousel for families and a popular coffee shop called Relax, It’s Just Coffee.

5. Mohican State Park

Distance: 1 hour Best for: hiking, kayaking

Mohican is another classic destination for outdoorsy folks. There are miles and miles of trails for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. In fact, there are annual ultramarathons and ultra bike races in the park that go up to 100 miles! The trails can be pretty hilly and rocky, so I’d recommend wearing hiking boots.

People also like to picnic, camp, and kayak in the area. For active travelers, Mohican Adventures has a 7- or 15-mile canoeing route and an aerial adventure park.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this cabin nestled in the heart of the park.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Distance: 1-2 hours Best for: easy hikes, biking, farmer’s markets

The overlook at Ledge's Trail during the golden hour, with the sun filtering through the trees

Ohio’s only national park isn’t all that far from Columbus, depending on which part of the park you want to visit.

A popular trail is Ledges Trail , an easy two-mile hike with 200 feet of elevation gain. You’ll walk through impressive layered rock structures and finish at a scenic overlook, where many people watch the sunset.

There are also several waterfalls of all sizes, including larger Brandywine Falls and small (but lovely) Blue Hen Falls .

If hiking isn’t for you, you can bike along the Erie Canal Towpath, ride the scenic railway, or stop at the Szalay’s Farm & Market.

See my post on Cuyahoga Valley National Park for more details!

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at  Country Inn and Suites , a 10-15 minute drive from the most popular parts of the park.

7. Amish Country

Distance: 2 hours Best for: rural landscapes, antiques, local food

Old white garage covered in vintage signs

Amish Country is home to the Amish community, a religious group best known for rejecting modern technology. You can learn about Amish history and their lifestyle at The Apline Hills Museum or The Amish Farm and House .

Popular stops include Sugarcreek, which is known as the “Little Switzerland” of Ohio. The small town has some classic Swiss architecture and the world’s largest cuckoo clock (it sounds more impressive than it is haha, but it’s still very cute). For all your fairy garden needs, visit the Secret Garden shop . It feels like a different world inside the store with the floral decorations, tiny figurines, and indoor fountains.

For a huge antique mall and craft mall, check out the Berlin Village Antique Mall . I would avoid the Walnut Creek Flea Market since it’s mostly mass-produced goods and isn’t really a flea market at all. There are some lovely local sellers, but it’s mainly a tourist trap.

As a plant-based traveler, I noticed that the area doesn’t have a lot of vegan-friendly options, but Park St. Pizza had delicious vegan pizza and a build your own option.

I also want to note that the area is very visibly pro-Trump and pro-gun (like most of rural Ohio), so certain people may not feel comfortable or safe there. The Amish generally don’t participate in politics, but the other residents of the area will have political signs in their yards and sell merch in local shops (it’s very prevalent at the Walnut Creek Flea Market).

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this cozy cottage .

8. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

Distance: 30 minutes Best for: walking, nature center, bison

Herd of bison in their prairie enclosure at Battelle Darby

A herd of bison roams across two large prairies in Battle Darby Creek Metro Park. Come to see the bison, walk the trails, or visit the nature center. There are trails from .2 to 12.5 miles of all hiking levels across the park’s 7,000 acres of land. The nature center is small, but has a sunny observation deck overlooking the prairies and has plenty of educational resources on the bison and surrounding wildlife.

9. Cleveland

Distance: 2 hours Best for: food, rock n’ roll, art

Cleveland Arcarde Victorian architecture

Commonly mistaken as the capital of Ohio, Cleveland has plenty to do for families, friend groups, and solo travelers.

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame is probably the most iconic attraction, featuring interactive exhibits and items used by rock and roll legends.

Foodies will appreciate the West Side Market , which has 100 vendors offering produce, desserts, and ready-to-eat meals. Columbus residents may see it as the Cleveland equivalent of our North Market.

One of the most photo-worthy spots is the Cleveland Arcade , which was the very first indoor shopping center in America. The exposed beams and Victorian architecture are really stunning. Nowadays, the shopping isn’t that interesting, and individual stores have limited hours, but it’s worth stopping by just to admire the building.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has a wide collection of art from around the world. Admission is free, though some special exhibitions and events may have an extra charge.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this downtown condo .

10. Cincinnati

Distance: 2 hours Best for:  city views, museums, sports

Suspension bridge overlooking the Ohio River into Cincinnati at sunset

Another major city in Ohio, Cincinnati is right along the Ohio River at the southern border of the state. Take a walk along the riverfront and laze around on the swinging benches overlooking the water. You can even stroll across the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge and end up in Kentucky!

The city is also home to the American Sign Museum , which is is dedicated to literal signs from 1870-1970. You can your fix of neon sign pics for your Instagram haha.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying in this modern apartment with a lovely view of the city.

That’s so interesting they wanted to start a socialist society. It seems the area has a lot of alternative lifestyle models in terms of people who want to live apart from the rest of society. Super interesting. The Amish have always kind of fascinated me because they speak a very outdated version of German, but I had no idea they were pro-Trump (or is that mainly the rest of the population in the area?).

It is such an interesting area! I adore Yellow Springs because it’s a super progressive bubble in the middle of rural Ohio haha. I believe the Amish don’t really participate in politics; it’s mainly the other residents of the area that have their Trump signs and merch in local shops.

Why did you say if they feel safe because it’s a pro Trump area. Are you insane? It’s not the East side of Columbus Ohio where gangs are at for God’s sake. So sad you felt the need to “go there” with that awful comment. You’re no longer welcome to our town with that horribly troubled attitude of hatred.😢

You’ve literally just proved my point by being hateful yourself and saying I’m not welcome in your area, after I merely pointed out that some people may not feel comfortable in an area where people visibly support a person who is hateful towards minorities. I myself had a very uncomfortable experience there that had racist undertones. Hope you find peace in your life.

Good list! I’m surprised Athens wasn’t mentioned, though.

I actually haven’t been yet! Adding it to my list since my parents went to grad school there actually 🙂

Ohio's capital city of Columbus can fill a weekend with culinary surprises and activities to fill one to three days of itineraries . The expanding downtown riverfront is where you'll find cultural, arts, and music festivals almost every weekend in the summer.

The Scioto Mile bike and walking path, which weaves along the riverfront and is one of the best parks in Columbus, is a nice spot to walk, jog, bike, or enjoy the sunset from a bench in the grass.

In the summer, kayak rentals are available on the riverfront. Columbus is a bike-friendly city. Some hotels offer bicycle rentals, or you can rent one at one of the many CoGo bike stations located throughout the downtown streets.

Before your visit, look to see what activities are taking place at Columbus Commons, the public green space in the center of downtown, which hosts free yoga classes on some weekends, festivals, and evening concerts at the outdoor amphitheater.

Downtown Columbus

Nationwide Arena is an entertainment venue in the active Arena District, which hosts popular concert tours and is home to Columbus' NHL Team, the Columbus Blue Jackets . A short walk from the arena is Huntington Park, where you can catch an evening ballgame with the Columbus Clippers capped off with fireworks in front of the Columbus skyline.

Hocking Hills

The southern Ohio Hocking Hills region is one of the most popular weekend getaways in the state. There are plenty of cabins to rent near Hocking Hills State Park and a stunning lodge that just re-opened with a restaurant, cozy nooks for curling up with a good book, and outdoor fire pits where you can gather with friends and take in some of the best stargazing in the state.

Since this area is far away from the city lights, another spot for epic stargazing in the Hocking Hills is at the John Glenn Astronomy Park , where you can stop by on your own or take part in one of the scheduled public programs.

This region is ideal for those who love the outdoors and who are looking for romantic getaways. Hiking, canoeing, zip-lining, and horseback riding are the best ways to enjoy the southern Ohio region. Some people just come to hunker down for a quiet weekend to be surrounded by nature.

There are several hiking areas with multiple trails in each that can fit both leisure hikers and those looking for a challenge. Trail signage is ample, so it is easy to find the right trails for your fitness level. Old Man's Cave , Conkle's Hollow Nature Preserve , Cedar Falls , Cantwell Cliffs, and Ash Cave have popular scenic hiking trails and many have sections that are wheelchair accessible.

The best time to visit the Hocking Hills region is in the fall, when southern Ohio is flush with vibrant colors from the leaves changing on the trees. Winter provides a unique way to see the Hocking Hills region, with frozen waterfalls and a popular annual winter hike that draws thousands of visitors. Be advised that Hocking Hills is one of the most popular getaways for in-state visitors too, so if you plan to go during the fall, make reservations for lodging far in advance.

Marina at Put-in-Bay

Few weekend getaways in Ohio compare to the island resort community at Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island . This Lake Erie getaway offers a range of things to do , from boating, swimming, and kayaking to dining in open-air restaurants while enjoying evening entertainment.

The mood in Put-in-Bay is one of leisure, so you can rent bikes or golf carts and just explore at your own pace. A worthwhile stop while on the island is Perry's Victory and International Memorial . For a small fee, you can make the trek up to the observation desk on the 352-foot-tall monument, where you get the best view of the island.

Kayaking in Put-in-Bay

The best way to get to Put-in-Bay is by the Miller Ferry or Jet Express Ferry , which runs on regular schedules to take you to the island from Port Clinton . It is important to take note of the last ferry that returns from the island at the end of the day, as that is your final opportunity to leave unless you are spending the night.

Like to fish? Catch a charter to experience the excellent perch and walleye fishing on Lake Erie , or if you don't want to put in the effort, at least be sure to try these local delicacies prepared fresh and fried at one of the island restaurants.

During your weekend visit, you can base yourself in Put-in-Bay and plan activities during other days to Kelleys Island and Cedar Point amusement park, which you can get to with the Jet Express ferry.

Amish farm in Ohio

A peaceful weekend getaway in Ohio's Amish country will remind you of life's simple pleasures, which is what makes it one of the top tourist attractions in Ohio . The winding back roads that run through Amish communities in east-central Ohio will take you past laundry drying on the line and farmers plowing fields with workhorses as you share the road with Amish buggies heading to market.

The towns of Charm, Walnut Creek, Millersburg, and Berlin are all located near each other, so you can drive through all of them in one visit. Many quaint bed-and-breakfasts lie throughout Holmes, Tuscarawas, and Knox counties, and they often serve up hearty breakfasts and baked goods made from locally sourced ingredients that are in-season.

To make the most of your visit, plan some time to meander through the winding back roads with no particular agenda. Be sure to stop for a tour and samples at one of several cheese factories in the region like Guggisberg Cheese and Heini's Cheese Chalet in Millersburg .

Amish Country

A must-visit in Ohio's Amish country is Walnut Creek Cheese in Walnut Creek. It's a large grocery store with incredible prices on cheese blocks and baking supplies. Take home a locally made Amish apple fry pie or pick up a cookbook of Amish recipes from the expansive gift shop, so you can take the homemade taste of Amish Country home with you.

Your Amish country visit will undoubtedly include impromptu stops at things you see along the way, like Amish children selling handmade baskets on the roadsides, and small independently owned shops that are located outside of the main tourist areas. These unplanned detours are often the best finds and create the most memorable experiences of your visit.

Cincinnati

Cincinnati is synonymous with baseball, and a visit to the Great American Ballpark for a Cincinnati Reds game is a must if you plan to be in Ohio in the summer. If you come in the fall, you can join the legions of local football fans for a Cincinnati Bengals game.

History buffs can plan an entire weekend visiting the many museums, including the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal , the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center , the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education, and the Cincinnati Art Museum .

A stroll along the downtown riverfront is a great way to see the sunset. Enjoy the swings on the riverwalk as you watch runners pass by or stop and wind down at the Smale Riverfront Park, a popular spot for families.

Holtman's donuts in Cinci's Over The Rhine neighborhood

Foodies can indulge in local history while eating their way through neighborhoods like the Over the Rhine district with a Cincinnati Food Tours experience. You can sample the fare at several restaurants on the walking tour and meet local chefs.

There are more than 50 unique neighborhoods in Cincinnati that you can explore, each with its own vibe, and there are many hotels around the city that can keep you close to where you want to spend the majority of your time. Walk the hilly neighborhood streets of Mount Adams with some of the best views overlooking the city, or soak in the arts scene in Northside.

No matter where you stay in Cincinnati, you do not want to head home without visiting the famous Holtman's Donuts. This family-owned shop cranks out creative donuts every morning from scratch. It is an unforgettable experience for your taste buds, and you can smell the bakery from a block away.

Ohio River Sternwheel Festival

You will notice that nearly everything in the town, including the rooms at The Lafayette Hotel , feature the steamboat theme, with actual artifacts and historic photos.

Marietta is a great walking city. A trail runs along the riverfront, and the small town is easy to navigate. The best time to visit is during the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival , a free event that brings many riverboats into town. The annual festival is always held the weekend after Labor Day.

Cleveland

Cleveland is an easy getaway that can fill your agenda with plenty of things to do . The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a must-see if you have never been to the city. At Progressive Field, you can attend a Cleveland Browns Football Game or a Cleveland Guardians baseball game.

Cleveland has an impressive Metroparks system that lets you enjoy the outdoors, with hiking, biking, bird watching, rowing, and one park with an ice chute that is open in the winter. The metroparks are connected around the city.

For a night out, the Flats East Bank is an easy one-stop venue for dining and entertainment. The renovated district is one of the most popular areas in the city, so restaurant reservations are recommended.

Other notable stops in the city include the Cleveland Museum of Art ; the Cleveland Zoo ; and a nostalgic visit to A Christmas Story House , which has been turned into a museum commemorating the classic Christmas movie.

Another must-visit during your Cleveland weekend getaway is the historic West Side Market , which is as interesting in its architecture as its food variety inside from local vendors selling fresh fruit and pastries to authentic hard-to-find ethnic specialties.

The Arcade Cleveland

The Arcade Cleveland is worth a visit while you are in downtown Cleveland. The Arcade was built in 1890 and has been preserved to be one of the best landmarks in Ohio. The Arcade Cleveland was the first indoor shopping mall in the United States and remains a shopping and dining destination.

Maumee Bay

For time away that includes the shores of Lake Erie , hiking, birding, biking, and s'mores by the campfire, Maumee Bay in northwest Ohio makes for a full weekend. Just outside of Toledo , the Maumee Bay area has a diverse ecosystem and a wide range of things to do, including spending time on Lake Erie.

Maumee Bay State Park is one of the best state parks in Ohio , with dozens of hiking trails throughout its 1,300 acres as well as recreational options. The landscape ranges from forestland to marshes, and convenient trails and boardwalks get you up close to the wildlife.

Maumee Bay sits along the Lake Erie Birding Trail , so take your binoculars to spot eagles and songbirds. One of the most popular times to visit is during the Biggest Week in American Birding each spring, when hundreds of birders and photographers come to see the tiny warblers on their migration path.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

One of the most unique cities you can visit for a weekend getaway is in the tiny northern town of Peninsula within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park . This quaint community has shops featuring the work of local artisans and quaint B&Bs that make the stay a peaceful one, whether you are looking for a romantic getaway or solitude.

New Plymouth Ravenwood Castle

While New Plymouth is not on many destination searches, it's one of the best-kept secrets in Ohio because of the medieval Ravenwood Castle . This is one of the most unique romantic getaways in the state.

The castle, a replica of 12th- and 13th-century castles, is tucked away in the Hocking Hills region. The grounds in the area lead you through a medieval village and themed cottages, cabins, and rustic gypsy wagons. The Great Hall has large dining tables, a mural of medieval battles depicting the grand majesty and allure of the times, and stunning stained-glass windows.

A New Plymouth getaway is a great home base if you plan to visit the Hocking Hills, as it is set apart from the other cottages in the area.

Address: 65666 Bethel Road, New Plymouth, Ohio

Geneva-on-the-Lake

Geneva-on-the-Lake is a throwback to the time when vacations were made up of simple pleasures, like arcades, Ferris wheels, and diner foods. Along the one-mile strip through town, many of these notions have not changed from when the resort community was in its heyday in the early 1900s.

You can see donut shops, miniature golf, antique shops, and ice-cream parlors all with original and nostalgic facades. Be sure to make time for lunch at Eddie's Grill , where coney dogs and root beer have been staples on the strip since 1950. Prepare for a wait, especially in the busy summer season.

While cottages are available to rent in the center of the action, your best bet is to stay just off the strip at Geneva-on-the-Lake Boutique Resort Hotel or in a nearby B&B. This allows you to enjoy the quiet serenity that you will find from being on the shores of Lake Erie, yet keeps you close to the tourist attractions in town.

Geneva State Park has hiking trails, fishing, biking, and a marina where you can rent jet skis and paddleboards or book a fishing charter to catch local walleye. Six miles of multi-use recreational trails wind through this park, and they become cross-country and snowmobile trails in the winter. Geneva State Park public beach, one of Ohio's best beaches , is easily accessible for an afternoon on the sand by picturesque Lake Erie.

What is billed as Ohio's first summer resort is ideal for a weekend getaway, because everything is so close and it offers a perfect mix of activities and opportunities to relax and enjoy a Lake Erie sunset.

Big Lyons Falls, Mohican State Park

A weekend getaway in the Mohican State Park area is for outdoor lovers. Walk through the hemlock-dense Mohican State Park and state forest as you hike one of the many trails.

Keep an eye out for wildlife like Ohio's white-tailed deer or take your binoculars to enjoy the view and birding opportunities from the Mohican Fire Tower Overlook . The high tower requires a hearty climb up, but the reward is one of the best scenic views in the state, including the Clear Fork Gorge that plunges 300 feet from the south rim.

Mohican is located adjacent to Loudonville , considered Ohio's canoe capital, so you might guess the summer outdoor opportunities that await. Rent a canoe to paddle down the Mohican River or rent a tube and just chill as you float your way through the natural environment.

For a fun way to add to your outdoor weekend, plan a camping trip at Mohican State Park or one of the other local campgrounds or stay in a treehouse at The Mohicans , which offers lodging high in the treetops or in comfortable cabins on the ground.

Granville

The quaint town of Granville has a New England feel and is a quiet way to spend a weekend in Ohio. Granville is about 30 minutes east of Columbus and has all the charm of a small Massachusetts village. Stroll the tree-lined campus of Dennison University, and grab an ice cream cone or a sandwich at one of the locally owned restaurants in the center of town.

Historic bed and breakfasts like the Granville Inn and the Buxton Inn are not only local landmarks but also nice places to stay. One of the most noticeable features of Granville is the pristine landscaping and flowers that add to the New England-style ambience.

The best view of the area is at Alligator Mound, a prehistoric animal effigy mound that sits on a bluff overlooking the area. Two historic sites to visit are the Avery-Downer House and the Robbins Hunter Museum and Bryn Du Mansion . These are iconic century-old estates featuring the elegant and historic architecture that defines Granville.

William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum

Canton is most known for being the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , but there is so much more to the city that can fill a weekend away from home. Start your visit to Canton in the downtown area, where you can base yourself for the weekend and be a part of the local arts and music scene with music venues and dozens of art galleries.

Spend a day visiting the historic sites in Canton, including the William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, which is also the final resting place for America's 25th President. The Canton Classic Car Museum is another stop that is picture-worthy. The museum houses more than 40 rare and classic cars and automobile memorabilia.

Spend the rest of your visit exploring Canton, making stops in the arts district and taking advantage of the farmer's markets in the summer. If you take a short drive just beyond Canton, you can experience some of the most stunning rural scenery in northeast Ohio.

Getaway Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Considering the benefits and the drawbacks are critical in weighing each place.

That way, you can pick the places that suit your preferences perfectly.

My family and I enjoyed the Grand Resort because of its luxurious ambiance.

Modern amenities—from the bed to the shower—made us feel very much at home.

However, the staff needs upskilling to better attend to the needs of every guest.

We also loved the Inn at Honey Run because of its rustic design and romantic atmosphere.

But some of its amenities need an upgrade to maximize the comfort given to visitors.

If you want waterfront views, the Sawmill Creek Resort will be your favorite spot in Ohio.

It’s perfect for us because we love having tee time every time we go on vacation.

Are you planning to visit the Salt Fork State Park during your weekend getaway?

If so, the Salt Fork Lodge must be your top choice to maximize your relaxation.

But past visitors shared that you must bring all the essentials since it takes time to reach the city center.

How I Picked The Destinations

My family and I have frequently visited Ohio for our weekend getaways.

I have also browsed online resources to see what people can enjoy in each hotel and attraction.

As a bonus, I talked to locals and experts to get additional ideas about the places I have yet to visit.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

best weekend getaways in ohio travel photo

Searching for the best weekend getaways in Ohio will expose you to many options.

Across its towns and cities, Ohio hosts various accommodation types where you can rest after the tour.

It was a delightful experience staying at the Inn at Honey Run because of the hospitable staff.

We looked forward to waking up early because of the hillside views we witnessed each morning.

Sawmill Creek was also one of our favorites due to the numerous activities you can do around the area.

If you decide to stay here, I suggest coming when the sun’s up to see the best of the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.

Of course, the Salt Fork Lodge caters best to those who want lakeside views more than anything else.

It also boasts family-friendly amenities like an outdoor pool, a game room, and a dining area that complete any trip.

However, the Grand Resort differs because of its outstanding service and quality.

No one from our group ever went hungry because of the nine restaurants available right inside.

At the same time, our quick weekend trip became more remarkable, thanks to the soothing massage at the spa that we intend to return for.

Such was undoubtedly one of the best experiences that my family had in our past adventures.

6. Detroit, MI

columbus ohio weekend trip

Everything you think you know about Detroit – might very well be totally wrong. Despite the bad reputation it often seems to get, Detroit has got a lot of cool things to see and experience. Several years ago, I spent a few days downtown and walked around after dark by myself – never once feeling uneasy. If you love sports – they’ve got hockey, football, baseball, and basketball. They have a terrific restaurant scene and some really terrific hotels. Be sure to check out the incredible music history of Detroit with a tour of Motown and and a visit to the nearby Henry Ford Museum in the town of Dearborn – one of the coolest museums in America!

7. Fort Wayne, IN

columbus ohio weekend trip

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

8. Indianapolis, IN

weekend trips from Columbus

Indianapolis was one of the first cities I explored when I started this website back in 2013.  Obviously, it’s famous for hosting the Indy 500 and a tour of the famous speedway is a must when you visit.  But Indy is great for more than just race cars.  Start with a look at the famous Monument Circle downtown and work your way to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis – hands down the greatest museum for families in the country. It’s amazing!  Check out the beautiful  canal  walk that runs through White River State Park, or go for some  Duck Pin  bowling in Fountain Square.  History buffs can check out Benjamin Harrison’s house, and if you’re a foodie – Indy is loaded with great restaurants!

9. Babcock State Park – Clifftop, WV

columbus ohio weekend trip

If you’re looking for a low-key adventure in the great outdoors – this is an amazing state park in West Virginia. Check out my article on visiting Babcock State Park – where you can rent a small cabin and have a front row seat to beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and other outdoor recreation. The old mill and waterfall in the park is awesome for pictures and you never know what kind of wildlife you’ll get to see!

10. Holland, MI

columbus ohio weekend trip

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

11. Pigeon Forge, TN

The Island in Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge clocks in at right about six hours from Columbus making it the longest road trip idea on our list. However, it’s worth every minute if you love the beautiful views of the Smoky Mountains. Pigeon Forge is loaded with family friendly activities and shows – from comedy to magic and country music. Take the kids on go-carts or mini-golf and enjoy some adult fun while you chill around the fountains at The Island at Pigeon Forge. It goes without saying to make time to explore Smoky Mountain National Park.

12. Nashville, TN

columbus ohio weekend trip

Nashville is just under six hours from Columbus and an awesome destination for an extended road trip! Even if you are not a fan of country music – there is a lot to love about Music City. Broadway is rockin all night with fun bars and take your pic of exciting museums dedicated to great performers: Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Glen Campbell, and others. Don’t miss an exact replica of the Parthenon not far from downtown and some incredible southern restaurants!

13. Owensboro, KY

columbus ohio weekend trip

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. 14. Springfield, IL

columbus ohio weekend trip

If you’re a history buff – a visit to Springfield, Illinois will be a memorable road trip experience. Illinois’ capital city was the where Abraham Lincoln lived before he became president and where his tomb is located. You can see the law office where he worked in his younger days and where he served as a state legislator. Springfield also the incredible Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library as well as some really great Route 66 history!

15. Dayton, OH

columbus ohio weekend trip

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

16. Cambridge, OH

columbus ohio weekend trip

The sweet treats at Kennedy’s Bakery is alone worth the road trip to small town Cambridge. Only a 90 minute drive from Columbus – enjoy a nice weekend getaway with small town shopping, some outdoor recreation at Salt Fork State Park, or a trip to The Wild’s animal experience a short drive from town. The holidays are best as this little town really dazzles with lights and charm!

17. Louisville, KY

columbus ohio weekend trip

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

18. Cincinnati, OH

columbus ohio weekend trip

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums –  The American Sign Museum  is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

19. Maumee Bay Lodge

columbus ohio weekend trip

Maumee Bay Lodge offers 120 guest rooms, each with private balcony overlooking the Maumee Bay of Lake Erie. Guests can enjoy the full-service dining room, cocktail lounge and snack bar. Family Road Trips from Columbus: 10 Destinations under 4 Hours

June 7, 2023 by Hannah Lewis Leave a Comment

I once had a coworker who said “Columbus is so great because it’s so easy to travel to other places.” It made me laugh because the reason they love Columbus is so they can leave Columbus. All jokes aside, we all know that Columbus has SO much to explore and for anyone who lives in these destinations below, come visit us for a weekend!

columbus ohio weekend trip

However, it is true that road trips from Columbus are generally pretty easy peasy and there are SO many places to explore throughout Ohio within the FIVE states that border our heart shaped state.

Here are 10 family road trip destinations that are under 4 hours from Columbus, offering a perfect blend of education, adventure, and entertainment that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Cleveland, Ohio (2.5-hour drive)

Home to the world-renowned Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland caters to all family members with additional attractions like the Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Botanical Garden, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

If you visit Cleveland during the warmer months, you can also make a visit to Lake Erie to enjoy a little beach weather or a boat ride! On your way outside the city, you can also take advantage of Ohio’s only National Park – Cuyahoga Valley is just south of Cleveland proper.

When our daughter was a baby, we took a quick 24 hour trip to Cleveland and wrote about it here . This is a great post from the Cleveland Traveler about 20 family friendly things to do in the city and surrounding area. Just make sure you visit Brewnuts for donuts, you won’t be disappointed.

columbus ohio weekend trip

Cincinnati, Ohio (1.5-hour drive)

Visiting Cincinnati is such an easy drive (just pop down I-71!) and there is so much to explore. Explore the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, one of the oldest zoos in the nation – we actually visited a few months ago, read about it here . Don’t miss the Cincinnati Museum Center and Cincinnati Art Museum for a perfect blend of fun and education – plus they are part of the COSI Reciprocal Program so you can get free or discounted admission!

Kings Island is a no brainer if your kiddo likes roller coasters, we’ve gone for some of their seasonal festivities and they are SO fun. My sister (EatPlayCbus) has taken her kiddos to Cincinnati many times and has a GREAT blog post with ideas for an overnight trip, read it here.

columbus ohio weekend trip

Indianapolis, Indiana (3-hour drive)

Indianapolis boasts the largest children’s museum in the world, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis – read our last review of the awesome museum. I find Indianapolis easy to navigate and a handful of fun kid-friendly spots that are perfect for a little weekend trip.

We had a blast at the Indianapolis Zoo and Conner Prairie has ALWAYS been on my list! They also have the Indiana State Museum and White River State Park as great places to take your family during your visit. Here is an article we wrote about 11 places to visit while in Indianapolis, read it here .

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the largest children’s museum in the world! It’s a fun way for families to enjoy the city of Indianapolis while learning with their families. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis mission is to create extraordinary learning experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities (STEM) that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. Their vision is to be recognized as the global leader among all museums and cultural institutions serving children and families. You can find this whole review on The Beard and The Baker.

Fort Wayne, Indiana (3-hour drive)

We haven’t visited here yet but my sister just spent the weekend here and WOW, it looked so so fun! You can read her full guide here that includes so many great places to visit AND eat with kids. With the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Science Central, and Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, Fort Wayne offers a day full of discovery and learning.

If you have kiddos who love to explore open style markets, then you will definitely need to add Union Street Market! Fort Wayne isn’t a huge city but boasts SO much activity. Plus, it’s halfway from Columbus to Chicago so it’s also a great “stop” on a longer road trip if you want to add to a trip!

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (3-hour drive)

My mom lived in Pittsburgh for about 5 years and I always loved to explore the city when I would visit. Pittsburgh is an older city than Columbus and some of these other midwestern towns so their architecture is really magical. You will find a fantastic blend of fun and educational spots including the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, and the four Carnegie Museums including Andy Warhol, Art, Natural History, and Science Center.

I also highly recommend spending the day down by the University of Pittsburgh (where the Carnegie Science Center is located) exploring the streets, stores, and definitely stopping in the Cathedral of Learning – very Hogwarts vibes. Another area I love is The Strip District which is a “one-half square mile shopping district is chock full of ethnic grocers, produce stands, meat and fish markets and sidewalk vendors.” Plus, you can get a famous Primanti Brothers sandwich which is honestly very delicious.

columbus ohio weekend trip

Chillicothe, OH (1-hour drive)

Chillicothe, Ohio offers a variety of family-friendly attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy and might not be on your radar! I haven’t done a full visit here yet but it’s on our list for the summer and for good reason .

If you’re an outdoor type family, be sure to put Adena Mansion and Gardens, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, and Yoctangee Park all on your list. There is plenty of history to absorb and beautiful art, nature, and playgrounds to explore.

Their historic downtown area boasts plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop! You can check out their tourism website for more tips on where to visit when you head down there.

Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio (1-hour drive)

Hocking Hills had a promotional glow up during c*vid! When you can only explore outdoors, that makes sense, right? Hocking Hills is over 2,000 acres and has six “areas” to explore throughout this Ohio State Park. Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, Conkles Hollow (a state nature preserve), Rock House and Cantwell Cliffs are all unique and are best for certain groups of folks so be sure to do a little research before you visit.

If you’re just going down for the day, I personally recommend Old Man’s Cave as it’s where the brand new Nature Center/Visitor Center is located and the most approachable.

There are TONS of lodging options but some are pretty pricey. You can check out the ODNR website that can point you in the right direction if you want to stay down there for a few days.

columbus ohio weekend trip

Dayton, Ohio (1-hour drive)

I think Dayton has so much to explore! It is home to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, and the SunWatch Indian Village, offering a journey into history, science, and Native American culture.

We had so much fun at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and… it’s FREE! If you are a COSI member, you do get 50% off at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery so be sure to keep your membership handy.

If you want to do something fun and delicious, I also recommend doing the Butler County Donut Trail! The trail is in Butler County so parts of Dayton and the surrounding area. Check out all the details here .

columbus ohio weekend trip

Louisville, Kentucky (3.5-hour drive)

Okay, I’m embarrassed to say that I have not explored Louisville at ALL but have been there at least 150+ times in my life. My family lives in a small town about 45 minutes north of Louisville in Southern Indiana.

On my next visit, I’ll absolutely be going to the Louisville Zoo (free with Columbus Zoo membership!), Kentucky Science Center (free with a COSI membership!), the Frazier History Museum, and always a visit to Quills Coffee and Hi-Five Donuts.

My friend Julie from What Should We Do Today in Columbus recently went to Louisville and shared a great roundup of the visit. Check out her post here!

columbus ohio weekend trip

Ann Arbor, Michigan (3.5-hour drive)

Okay, us Ohioans are SLEEPING on Michigan. It’s amazing and beautiful! We made a pit stop in Ann Arbor a few years ago when we were on our way to Traverse City (also incredible).

Ann Arbor features the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum (free with a COSI membership!) and the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, offering children a chance to get up close and personal with science and history.

We also made a visit to their version of Katzingers, Zingerman’s which was delightful and a really fun environment for a sandwich shop! Lucky for us, we were visiting during the summer and their farmers market was in full swing – it’s always so fun to see what kind of produce you see at markets in other locations. We actually wrote an article specific to kid-friendly stuff in Ann Arbor that you can read here.

Ann Arbor, Michigan is a beautiful city! Here are 8 family friendly things to do in this very welcoming college town. The 8 places to visit in Ann Arbor, Michigan are University of Michigan, the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, Crazy Jim’s Bilmbyburger, Downtown Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Festivals, Anthony’s Gourmet Pizza, Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market, and Zaingerman’s Delicatessen.

Planning a road trip from Columbus is now a breeze! So pack up the car, grab the kids, and get ready to make some unforgettable memories. If you have more suggestions on where we should add to this list, leave a comment below or let us know on Instagram or Facebook !

If you’re in serious need of friend-time and want to explore a new place together, a girls trip to Columbus is the way to go. There you can spoil yourselves with delicious food and drink, fantastic shopping, amazing spa services and fun activities.

Columbus is the fastest-growing city in the Midwest, but hanging out downtown isn’t stressful. It has Goldilocks appeal – it feels just right with plenty of things to do without crowds or mean people. (Have you heard of Midwest-nice? It’s for real.)

Book rooms at the downtown Columbus locations of the Hilton or Canopy hotels. Both are within walking distance to Short North, a hip neighborhood with restaurants and shops. Then, plan a weekend around doing all the cool things this city has to offer. Here are my favorites:

1. Get Pampered

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mukha Spa (@mukhaspa)

Start your getaway off right with beauty treatments at Mukha Custom Cosmetics and Med-Spa . Get their signature facial (it comes with a Thai massage!), have your lashes tinted and curled (bye-bye mascara), or get your makeup expertly applied.

Whatever you choose, you’ll feel so good when you walk out. Maybe it’s the complimentary champagne they pour. But more likely: It’s the glow you get from doing something awesome for yourself.

Speaking of which, the makeup artists at Mukha create custom cosmetics and their foundation is the bomb – they formulate it to match your skin texture and tone. I highly recommend you pony up for it. They’ll even keep a record of your exact mix so you can order a refill over the phone and they’ll ship it to you.

2. Make Your Own Scented Candle

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Penn & Beech Candle Co. (@pennandbeech)

Belly up to a candle-making bar at Penn & Beech Candle Co. to pour your own candle. First, you pick the container. Next, select three scents from more than 100 different ones to blend into a custom fragrance.

Then you craft a label and wait for your candle to set while sipping wine or beer – it takes about two hours – or come back to pick it up later when it’s ready. You can also make diffuser oils or room and body sprays.

3. Sample Mead

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kristi Valentini (@kvalentini)

Mead is a medieval drink that’s making a comeback some thousand or so years later. A cross between beer and wine, it’s made from fermented honey. You might have seen it at The Renaissance Festival or watched those lushes on “Game of Thrones” throw back goblet-fuls.

Get familiar with this old-school sip with a guided tasting at Brothers Drake Meadery . Staff will give you generous pours of five meads with different flavor profiles, from dry to sweet. Or just walk in and order your own flight of five – you make the picks. Either way, it’s tons of fun!

4. Check Out Cool Neighborhoods

Downtown Columbus has a bunch of neighborhoods to explore. But there’s only so much time on a weekend getaway. So here are the ones you shouldn’t miss:

Victorian Village

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Victorian village (@victorianvillagelife)

The brick-paved streets of this historic district are lined with stunning Victorian-era homes (think: turrets and lacy woodwork and MASSIVE curb appeal). After walking around, jealously eyeballing every single house, stop in at Basi Italia . It’s a tiny, tucked away restaurant with a sweet backyard patio, a few tables inside and mouthwatering Northern Italian dishes.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a single dish here, but if scallops, steak or eggplant are on the menu, order them. Also, save room for dessert because the cannoli here puts most Italian grandmothers to shame.

German Village

Want more gorgeous architecture? You got it. Head to German Village for stately Victorian homes encircling charming Schiller Park. Even the sidewalks here are fancy – they’re paved with carved bricks.

Get lost in The Book Loft . It has 32 rooms to navigate through. Also, stop into Helen Winnemore’s and check out all the handcrafted, American-made jewelry, pottery and gifts.

Then to honor this neighborhood’s European heritage, make like the Germans and have an afternoon coffee and pastry. Fox in the Snow is super popular for a reason, actually for several reasons: huge cinnamon rolls, mini blueberry tarts and sour cream coffee cake, to name just a few.

Short North

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Short North Arts District (@shortnorthartsdistrict)

The hippest place to hang is arguably in the Short North neighborhood. This is where you’ll find the spa and candle place talked about above. It’s also a great place to shop. Besides big names like Anthropologie, you can pop into little boutiques too. Rowe Boutique has affordable designer looks and Ladybird is stocked with up-and-coming designers and vintage accessories.

Top off your jaunt through this section of downtown with an upscale dinner at The Guild House . Not only does this establishment serve unforgettable meals, it’s got a great vibe too: White leather couchettes, a wall of liquor all aglow, and lots of chatter because it’s popular with the locals. And did I mention that the food is amazing? The sea bass in lobster broth is a meal you’ll be  yearning for long after vacation is over.

5. Catch the Symphony

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Columbus Symphony (@columbussymphony)

During the summer, the Columbus Symphony performs free concerts in parks around the city. You could try to catch one of those. But the best thing to do is to reserve a lawn seat at one of their Picnic With Pops concerts.

These performances pair pop artists like Michael Bolton and En Vogue with the orchestra. When I went, a rock band played alongside the orchestra belting out Queen cover songs. How awesome is that?

6. Sip Rooftop Cocktails

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Goodale Station (@goodalestation)

For a fantastic view of Columbus, go to Goodale Station . It’s a bar at the top of the Canopy by Hilton hotel. You’re definitely paying for the view here, but it’s worth it. With a high-end cocktail in hand, you could sit and gab for HOURS.

7. Eat Globally

View this post on Instagram A post shared by North Market (@northmarket)

Eliminate arguments about what to eat with a trip to North Market . This food hall is the oldest public market in Columbus and packed with international vendors. Basically, it’s the United Nations of food halls so everyone can get exactly what they want. Try a little Tibetan, Somali or Polish food. Nosh lobster rolls, hot chicken, ramen, sushi or pasta. It’s all here, people.

At the market, be sure to stop by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams . They serve unique flavors, from goat cheese with cherries to wildberry lavender. Go big with a flight of scoops so you can taste a bunch of flavors. But at the very minimum, try a scoop of Texas sheet cake (my favorite!).

8. Hunt for Treasure

Do you and your girlfriends love anything vintage? If so, make sure you visit Columbus on a weekend when the Springfield Antique Show & Flea Market is taking place.

You’ll find acres of collectibles at this county fairground less than an hour west of Columbus. It’s one of the nation’s most popular places to buy and sell antiques. Looking for farmhouse quilts? Fiestaware? Rhinestone broaches? They’ve got ‘em. Insider tip: The market’s “Extravaganza” shows have the most vendors.

Columbus is an ideal destination for a weekend girls trip. It’s the perfect place to chat, bond, laugh until your belly hurts, and walk away with some pretty cool memories. So what are you waiting for?

Happy travels,

Elon Musk comes out fighting as China throws Tesla a lifeline

  • Elon Musk made a surprise visit to China, meeting officials and striking a deal with Baidu.
  • The deal brings Tesla a step closer to introducing its self-driving features in cars sold in China.
  • Tesla's sales in China have struggled amid rising competition from Chinese makers and a price war.

Insider Today

Elon Musk 's surprise visit to China appears to have paid off.

The billionaire unexpectedly traveled to Beijing over the weekend, meeting with high-ranking officials and striking a deal with the Chinese search giant Baidu.

The whirlwind visit came just a week after the billionaire decided not to make a planned trip to India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing Tesla -related "obligations."

Instead, Musk with Premier Li Qiang, China's second-highest-ranking politician, in Beijing to discuss the rollout of Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology in the world's biggest auto market. Bloomberg reported that the electric-vehicle maker was expected to get the green light for the tech in China, citing an unnamed source.

Approval of FSD software could help boost Tesla's sales in China, which have slumped amid steep competition from local rivals and suffered elsewhere from rising anxiety about EVs.

'Golden opportunity'

The partnership with Baidu revolves around mapping and navigation functions for Tesla's autonomous-driving software.

Bloomberg reported that Baidu's lane-level navigation and mapping was likely to let Tesla make its autonomous-driving services available in China.

Related stories

Such a move could be a much-needed boost for Tesla, which has lost its market leadership in the world's largest EV market.

Tesla has had difficulty keeping up with a brutal price war against Chinese suppliers. In 2023, it lost its title as the world's top EV seller to BYD , which is also planning to release its own autonomous-driving technology.

China's sluggish economy and property-market woes have also dampened consumer demand and made some wary of big-ticket purchases.

Approval for FSD could have a significant impact on Tesla's revenues, given it charges $8,000 in the US for it or $99 a month for a subscription.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, the Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said of the deal, "This could open up FSD in China, which I view as unlocking what could be, really, the golden opportunity for them."

Chinese authorities also said Tesla's cars made in the country now passed data-security requirements. In 2021 Beijing cracked down on the use of Teslas by state personnel over security concerns posed by the vehicles' cameras.

Musk's battle plan

Musk's China visit came amid tough times for Tesla.

The EV maker reported its first decline in quarterly revenue since 2020 in its earnings call last week, missing Wall Street's already-low expectations. The revenue drop represented the first major decline since the pandemic disrupted vehicle production and deliveries.

Telsa has also been laying off 10% of its workforce , or about 14,000 employees, and has had to recall recently launched Cybertrucks.

Despite the miserable earnings, the company's stock jumped after the news that Tesla's long-awaited cheaper EVs were coming soon. Musk didn't give many specifics on the new vehicles, such as exactly how much they'd cost or when they'd be available, but it was enough to soothe nervous investors.

The stock surge confirms that Musk's promises still have meaning for many investors. Tesla is set to rise again by close to 10% when trading begins on Monday.

The combined might of China's car makers is a formidable adversary, but Musk's visit shows he's coming out fighting.

Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.
