What are the different ticket types for Eurostar trains?

The fare classes on Eurostar come in three tiers. The lowest and most affordable is Standard, which is the equivalent of coach or economy class with an airline.

Next up is Standard Premier, which is akin to premium economy. Finally, there's Business Premier, which is Eurostar's version of business class.

The fare classes are broken down as follows:

With regards to pricing, the cost of fares in Standard and Standard Premier fluctuates based on seasonality, peak periods and destination. Business Premier, on the other hand, remains fairly consistent year-round in terms of pricing. Eurostar tickets can usually be booked up to 330 days before your return travel date.

Generally speaking, if you're considering a trip from London onward, you can expect prices to fall somewhere within the following margins for a one-way trip:

If you're looking to snag a bargain, it's worth keeping your eye out for flash sales, which Eurostar regularly runs throughout the year, often with tickets for as little as 30 British pounds (around $38).

How do Eurostar trains compare to flying?

Compared to flying to your destination and transiting through European airports, traveling via Eurostar is much more low-stress.

The most obvious difference is the security experience, which, compared to that at an airport, is effortless, with no removal of liquids or large electric items. Although queues can mount up during busy periods, we've found that we're through security in under 10 minutes when we travel with Eurostar.

Check-in is similar to airport check-in in that you must show your ticket and passport at a desk or kiosk. London's St. Pancras International Station , however, is currently testing biometric face scans , which may make checking in even faster.

Regarding lounge access, it's worth noting lounges are only available at the St. Pancras, Paris Gare du Nord and Brussels Midi/Zuid stations.

If you're used to airline-run business-class airport lounges, you may need to lower your expectations somewhat here. Although comfortable and pleasant, the lounges are somewhat basic — don't expect too much in the way of food.

On board the Eurostar, it's like most modern trains you may have taken at home. The differences between Standard Premier and Business Premier are nominal. You'll get slightly more legroom and a slightly more modern seat in both classes than in Standard.

What you're paying for in these classes is the luggage allowance and food service. If you don't deem either of those things a huge must-have, you'll be more than comfortable in Standard.

That said, the food service on the Eurostar is much better than on most airplanes and currently features a menu designed by the renowned Raymond Blanc. Champagne and coffee services are also served free of charge in Business Premier.

How to book the Eurostar train with credit cards

Travel on Eurostar, booked directly with Eurostar or through an online travel provider, should be coded as travel.

How to earn points and miles for Eurostar trains

Eurostar operates its own loyalty program named Club Eurostar. For every British pound spent (about $1.27), you will earn 1.2 points. This means you earn around 1 point per $1 spent.

Elite members receive the following points bonuses when booking:

• Avantage: 25%
• Carte Blanche: 50%
• Etoile: 75%

Eurostar tickets can now be booked through the Uber app , and you will earn 10% back in Uber credits on Eurostar bookings and National Rail train tickets in the U.K.

Additionally, you can earn 10% back when you purchase your coach tickets with the following U.K. operators: National Express and Megabus. If you decide to opt out of taking public transit, you can also hire a car from Avis, Hertz and other companies in your Uber app. When you book your trip, you'll receive £10 off (about $12).

You can also transfer 2,000 Accor Live Limitless points and receive 300 Eurostar points.

How to redeem points and miles for Eurostar trains

You can redeem 2,000 Club Eurostar points for a round-trip ticket in Standard class (or 4,000 points for a Standard Premier ticket), though these tickets are limited. For 1,000 more points, you can book any Standard or Standard Premier seats available.

A round-trip ticket can easily cost over $200 in Standard class (and double this at peak periods), making Club Eurostar points very valuable.

Business Premier tickets are available for 6,000 points round-trip for any available seat (saver-level space is not offered).

A one-way upgrade from Standard to Standard Premier is 600 points.

If you don't wish to redeem Club Eurostar points for train travel, you can transfer 500 Eurostar points and receive 1,000 Accor points .

You can redeem Virgin points through Virgin Red for the following Eurostar vouchers:

• 2,000 points for a 10-pound E-Voucher (about $12)
• 5,000 points for a 25-pound E-Voucher (about $31)

Station refurbishments in Amsterdam Centraal are due to take place for six months from June 14, 2024. This will mean limited Eurostar trains from London to Amsterdam, and no direct services from Amsterdam to London during this time. That said, it will still be possible to make return journeys to the Netherlands via Eurostar, albeit with a longer journey back to England. There will be three daily services from London to Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The return journey from Amsterdam to London will require passengers to take a connecting service in Brussels-Midi, with a wait time that Eurostar estimates will be between 48min and 1hr 48min. When the refurbishment is complete, a new cross-channel terminal will allow for more regular, direct trains between the two cities.

How early should I arrive for the Eurostar?

Eurostar recommends that you get to London St Pancras around 1hr 15min before departure. This will give you enough time to clear security and passport control (for both the UK and France), and then wait in the departure lounge until the platform is announced. It’s best to stock up on food and drink in St Pancras station as the choice is limited inside the Eurostar terminal. If you’re travelling in Business Premier you can enter via a fast-track entrance so arriving an hour before will leave you with plenty of time to clear security and board the train.

How long does the Eurostar take?

Most journeys from London to Paris take 2hr 16min but some can be as long as 2hr 37min. The Eurostar typically takes 1hr 53min to Brussels; 1hr 22min to Lille; and 3hr 52min to Amsterdam.

What’s the difference between the classes on Eurostar?

There are three classes to choose from — Standard, Standard Premier and Business Premier. The difference between Standard and Standard Premier is that in the latter seats are slightly bigger and you’ll get a light meal and drinks served to your seat. In Business Premier you get a three-course meal, designed by Raymond Blanc, served with a glass of champagne and other hot and cold drinks throughout the journey. You can use the Business Premier lounges with free snacks, drinks and newspapers, use the fast-track gates and your ticket has more flexibility: there are no fees to exchange or cancel.

How much luggage can you take?

There’s no limit on weight and each bag can be up to 85cm at its widest points. Passengers in Standard or Standard Premier can take two pieces of luggage and one piece of hand luggage while those in Business Premier can take three pieces of luggage and one piece of hand luggage. Children can take one piece of luggage and one piece of hand luggage. You can book separate spaces for bikes. Musical instruments should be in a case up to 85cm long. Is there a café onboard?

Yes, you can buy drinks, meals and snacks in Café Métropole, which is reasonably priced. You’re also welcome to bring food and drinks with you on board.

Can you take liquids on Eurostar?

Yes, unlike on flights there’s no limit on the quantity of liquids you can take on board.

What items are not allowed on Eurostar?

Among the items prohibited on Eurostar are unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and some relics from world war sites such as historical weapons, munitions and explosive devices; plus certain inflammable substances, flick knives, gardening equipment and furniture, e-scooters and perishable items such as fish, meat and dairy products. You cannot bring alcohol on board in excess of the Eurostar alcohol policy . This policy limits passengers to a few unopened bottles of alcohol to take to their destination. Alcohol consumption on board the Eurostar is limited to four bottles or cans of beer or one bottle of wine per person. Large bottles of spirits cannot be consumed on board. Passengers who want to bring back large quantities of alcohol on their return must contact a courier service.

Can children travel for free?

Children under four can travel for free if they can sit on an adult’s lap for the whole journey. If they need their own seat you’ll need to buy a child ticket. In terms of luggage, you can take one pushchair and one car seat per child for no extra cost. Café Métropole is on board and handy if your little one wants to move around during the journey. Child tickets, for those aged from four to 11, are 30 per cent cheaper in Standard and Standard Premier. Eurostar also offers discounted youth fares for those aged from 12 to 25 but these are currently not available for trips to and from London.

Does Eurostar have wi-fi?

Yes, there’s free wi-fi throughout the train, though the signal can be patchy because it relies on mobile data — especially when going through tunnels. Head to settings, wi-fi, select EurostarTrainsWiFi and register your details when on board.

Can dogs go on the Eurostar?

No, only guide dogs are allowed on board.

How can I get cheap Eurostar tickets?

Adult single tickets start from £39 and it’s usually a case of the earlier the better when it comes to booking, particularly if you want to travel over a weekend or on a bank holiday. Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be the cheapest days to travel. Eurostar advises that you book four months in advance for the best prices. You can change your tickets for free up to seven days before departure, so if you do need to change dates, or see a cheaper price, it’s easy to amend your booking.

How far in advance can you book Eurostar?

You’ll typically be able to book Eurostar tickets up to 330 days in advance of your return travel date.

Are Eurostar tickets refundable?

It depends which class of ticket you’ve booked. Standard and Standard Premier tickets are non-refundable but you can change your ticket without an exchange fee up to seven days before the departure of your original train. You will need to pay the difference in fare. If you want to change your train within seven days of the departure date you’ll need to pay a £30 exchange fee for Standard or £40 for Standard Premier, as well as any difference in fare. This is per person, per leg of the journey and you can make any changes on the “manage your booking” section of the Eurostar site, if this is where you booked your original tickets. If you need to make a change in person or over the phone there will be a £10 service charge.

The most flexible tickets are Business Premier. If you need to cancel your journey you can get a refund up to 60 days after your planned departure, but this doesn’t include routes to the Netherlands. Standard Premier bookings and exchanges can be made over the phone or at the station.

It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of all kinds of planes, trains and automobiles. I love the speed, the excitement of going somewhere new and the chance to sit back, relax and stare idly out the window and watch the world pass me by.

I was more than a little excited to catch the Eurostar to Brussels a couple of weeks ago and I have to say that it was surprisingly smooth and easy. It was so easy that it actually made me feel guilty; It took two hours to get to Brussels, that’s less time than it takes to get to my parent’s house in North Wales, so why have I never been before?

It’s crazy how close we are yet the thought of going to a whole new country seems like such a faff that I never bothered but it was actually easy as pie.

Quick Facts

• It costs from £69 return and the ticket will take you to any station in Belgium
• The train takes 2 hours
• You need to arrive at least 15 minutes before the train leaves
• If you’re late, they do have a special queue for people taking the next train to leave
• It will cost more if you travel at the weekend
• The coffee and food on board is fine but expensive so you’re better off stocking up at the nicer cafes once you get through security. This applies for both London and Belgium stations

Here’s how it went…

I left my house at 7am on a miserable Saturday morning to catch the 8am Eurostar. Just as I was locking the door I had a last minute panic attack: “What if you’re meant to check in an hour before like you do on a flight?”

I spent the next 40 minutes sweating and willing the tube to go faster while I paced around in a circle like a dog trying to find a comfy spot. In situations like this I’m sure the tube driver can sense your intense urgency from the front of the train and purposely slows down and cautions his passengers at every single stop about the dangers of getting your coat stuck in the door.

After sprinting up a marathon of escalators at King’s Cross St Pancreas (with my suitcase in tow!), I arrived with 20 minutes to spare. Phew. This was more than enough time to get through security which was a quick ticket barrier, brief luggage scan and passport check and even I had enough time for a coffee and croissant which made me feel very European.

The train was spacious and comfortable and we arrived in Brussels at 11.04 feeling relaxed and unflustered.

Getting to Ghent

If you plan to travel to somewhere else in Belgium, Brussels train station is really easy to navigate. We found the train to Ghent in no time and the trains seem to leave about every 12 minutes.

A return journey from London to Belgium costs from £69 on the Eurostar website . If you plan to travel over the weekend it is a little more expensive but it’s still cheaper than flying when you factor in the price of transport on either side of the airport.

TIP: The train to Ghent was included in the Eurostar ticket but this wasn’t obvious on the ticket. I was later told that this Eurostar ticket would take you to any Belgium station.

I upgraded to first class on Eurostar from London to Brussels for just $12. Here's what I got for my money.

• I upgraded my Eurostar ticket from London to Brussels to first class for only $12 more.
• The carriage was significantly more spacious than standard class and I also got a meal.
• I even got my own single seat, with no one directly next to or opposite me.

I took the Eurostar high-speed train from Brussels to London. It only cost $12 more to upgrade to Standard Premier, or first-class – so I went for it.

My single journey, which I booked about three weeks in advance, cost $187, including the upgrade. Prices vary considerably depending on time of travel and when you book. Standard Premier usually a lot more than the $12 I paid.

One of the first things I noticed was that the Premier Standard carriage was significantly more spacious than Standard class.

There was was plenty of space for large luggage, too, partly because there were fewer passengers in each carriage.

I was really impressed by having my own single seat, with the nearest passenger across the aisle and no one close by.

There were also seats in pairs – in some cases next to and in other cases opposite each other – as well as sets of four around a table.

My seat had a tray table that could be pulled down and a rack for magazines or newspapers. It also had a cup holder, a mirror, a lamp, and a USB socket.

As well as free WiFi – which can be a bit temperamental but is available on the entire train – there were a number of magazines to read.

The best part was the free meal.

Passengers could choose between a chicken and a vegetarian main.

I opted for the veggie meal – two pieces of falafel, hummus, a slice of courgette, and a quinoa and carrot salad. It tasted delicious, though the portion was small.

The meal also had other dishes.

The meal also came with a small bread roll, lemon dessert, and bottle of water. I was also offered a choice of drink, and went for a Coke Zero and a cup of tea.

Passengers who opted for wine were offered free top-ups – a major perk of traveling in Standard Premier.

The upgrade was worth it.

Though an exact comparison isn't possible, if I'd been in Standard class and ordered a sandwich, cold drink, and dessert in a lunch deal from the on-board cafe (like in this photo from a Eurostar journey I took last year), plus a cup of tea, it would have cost me about $15. That's more than the cost of my upgrade to Standard Premier.

I got lucky.

To have a single seat for the two-hour journey and get a meal and drinks, the $12 upgrade definitely felt worth it. But I know that I got lucky when I booked.

For most journeys, the upgrade costs at least $25. For some journeys, it's well over $50, and I'm not sure that's worth it for a two-hour journey.

How does an Any Belgian Station ticket work?

As the name suggests, an Any Belgian Station ticket covers travel all the way from the UK to anywhere in Belgium and back.   You’ll travel with Eurostar to Brussels-Midi/Zuid (it’s one station, it just has a French and a Dutch name), then it’s a simple change to an SNCB train to continue your journey through Belgium. High speed ICE trains, as well as the Brussels Metro and trams aren’t covered by your ticket. If you're travelling on to Brussels Airport (Brussels Airport-Zaventem station), you’ll have to pay a €6.50 Diabolo supplement each way, which you can do at belgianrail.be , in a Belgian station or on board your connecting train. You won’t have a seat booked on the local train, so just hop on and find a seat – in first class if you have a Standard Premier or Business Premier ticket.   There’s no need to rush your connection. As long as you carry on within 24 hours, you can spend a little time in Brussels en route. On the way home, you can arrive in Brussels any time within 24 hours of your Eurostar departure. Your ticket will only show travel times to/from Brussels. Please ensure that you allow plenty of time to get from your final destination to Brussels for your return trip. How to make onward connections by train, tram or Metro when arriving in Brussels/Bruxelles on the Eurostar

ShowMeTheJourney's guide to arriving by Eurostar at Bruxelles-Midi/Brussels South station helps makes sense of what can be a confusing station to navigate.

It also explains what to be aware of when making onward connections; both into other train services such as the ICE trains and Thalys trains, or if you will be travelling on to Bruxelles/Brussels city centre.

The Eurostar trains now arrive at either one of two distinct parts of Bruxelles-Midi / Brussel Zuid station.

The trains which have Brussels / Bruxelles as their final destination arrive at voies (platforms/tracks) 1 or 2, which comprise the dedicated Eurostar terminal within Midi/Zuid station. Only Eurostar trains use this part of the station.

However, the Eurostar trains which continue on to Amsterdam use voies (platforms/tracks) 3 - 6, which are located within the part of the station used by the other high-speed services, the ICE, Thalys and TGV trains. These are the trains which typically depart from London at:

• 06:16 on Monday to Friday
• 08:16 daily
• 11:04 daily
• 18:04 not Saturday

From voies (platforms/tracks) 1 or 2:

The exit lobby from Eurostar Arrivals at voies 1 and 2 within Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station is beyond the front of the trains.

The platforms (tracks/voies) at Bruxelles-Midi are above street level, so passengers need to descend in order to exit the station and connect into the other train services. The only access down into the main station building from this Eurostar arrivals area can be by using the lifts (elevators) and the staircase. Queues inevitably build up for the lifts, so taking the stairs can be the quicker option.

There are also escalators over to the left of the lifts, but on the most recent two occasions on which ShowMeTheJourney was at Bruxelles-Midi, they were switched out of use.

The lifts (elevators) and stairs all exit into a passage which runs across the front of the station; it is at right angles to the main passage way in the station, which has the main exits from the station at each end of it So as you step out of the lift/elevators, this other main passage way is over to left. Therefore to reach the main exits and to access other train services, the metro and the trams; turn left and then walk ahead to the right of the signs shown below.

There are taxi ranks at both ends of the ground floor passage way across the side of the station, which is beneath the part of the station used by the Eurostar trains, so it is where you'll initially find yourself having descended down Eurostar arrivals. So if you're taking a taxi you don't have to follow the crowd, most of whom will be heading into the main part of the station. Though the main taxi rank at Bruxelles-Midi is just outside the main exit from the station, once you're at ground level it will be merely a few steps away, over to the left.

The main exits at Bruxelles-Midi are located at either end of the main ground level passage way under the railway tracks at Bruxelles-Midi/Zuid. It is named ‘Couloir Principal (French) and Hoofdgang (Dutch)' and is immediately over to the left when exiting from the lifts/elevators or stairs, which you will have used to descend from Eurostar arrivals.

On the left of the main passage way, right by Eurostar arrivals, is the primary exit from the station on to Place Victor Horta; and one of the taxi ranks at the station is located here, though at busy times it will have the longest queues.

At the other end of the main passage way, the ‘Couloir Principal'/Hoofdgang', is the secondary exit on to Avenue Fonsny, where many of the nearest hotels to the station are located, including The Ibis and The Radisson.

When a Eurostar train arrives at voies (platforms/tracks 1-2) there are usually two options for making the transfer on to another train departure at Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel Zuid.

1: Using the main passage way in the station

You can take the route which leads into the main station, in effect you will be following the crowd as this route is also used by the passengers exiting the station. From the arrival concourse, passed the front of the trains, there are always lifts (elevators) and stairs down to the level below, which is where the main access points to the other trains can be found. They can also be escalators down to this level, but on the previous two occasions on which ShowMeTheJourney has been at Bruxelles-Midi, they have been switched out of use.

When you have descended from the platform.(track/voie), which a Eurostar terminating in Bruxelles will have arrived at, follow the signs that have the ICE and Thalys logos on them - no matter which train service you will be connecting to.

When you enter the main street level passage way at the station, the the ‘Couloir Principal'/Hoofdgang', turn to the right to access all of the other trains that will be departing from Bruxelles-Midi. You'll need to walk passed the Channel Terminal (Eurostar Departures) which you will see on the right.

A few steps further along on the right will be the departure area for voies/platforms 3-6 that all of the Thalys trains and most of the ICE trains will depart from.

If you will be connecting into a train on to another destination in Belgium, it will be departing from voies/platforms 7 - 22 and further along this Couloir Principal'/Hoofdgang' on the right there will be sets of escalators and stairs up to each platform, and on the left there are lifts.

The three potentially useful features of taking this route are:

• You can access and check the information for your onward train, the main departure board is in the ‘Couloir Principal'/Hoofdgang and there are also staffed info booths.
• There is a waiting area for onward departures.
• You can access the food/drink options in the station.

2: Using the 'Correspondances' short cut

Approximately half-way along each of platforms (voies) 1 and 2 that the Eurostar will arrive at, is an escalator which leads down away from the trains. It's not particularly obvious where it leads to, there are some train symbols on the signs by it, but it connects to both the departure area used by the other high-speed train services, and the south passage way in the station, the Couloir Sud/Zuidgang. At the foot of the escalator, on the left you'll see the access to platforms/voies 3-6, which is where all of the Thalys trains and most of the ICE trains will be departing from. If your train will be leaving from here, you can find out which voie (platform/track) it will be leaving from, once you're in the departure area.

Over to the right you will find the south passage way in the station, the Couloir Sud/Zuidgang, the signs also say 'Galerie Zud', which leads to platforms/voies 7-22, that the Belgian national trains and some ICE trains depart from. Above the entrance to this passage way are departure summary indicators, so you can use them to check which voie (platform/track) your train will be leaving from. The access to platforms/voies 7-22 from the passage way is by stairs and lifts (elevators), no escalators are available.

However, those escalators on platforms (voies) 1 and 2 can be switched out of use and when they are, this alternative access to the trains is closed.

Because this 'shortcut' to the trains is around halfway along platforms (voies) 1 and 2, it can be a particularly good option if your assigned seats on the Eurostar are in the rear half of the train. If your seats are in coaches 1 - 5 the better option will be to use the main exits by the front of the train, because a scenario definitely best avoided is to head in the opposite direction to find these escalators, to then discover that they are switched out of use.

Regardless of where your seats are on the Eurostar, it's only worth considering using this short-cut if you know that your onward train will be leaving within the next 25mins. Most of the Belgian national trains don't arrive at Bruxelles-MIdi until a couple of minutes before departure. Though this short-cut can often by the best option when connecting into the ICE trains, as explained below.

From voies (platforms/tracks 3 - 6):

The trains heading to Amsterdam use this part of the station. Towards the middle of the voie (platorm) track the exits is by escalators and there will also be a lift (elevator) by the front of the train.

The exit from the escalators leads to main passage way under the station, which is named 'Le Couloir Principal/Hoofdgang’ and is pictured above.

If you use the escalators to descend from these platforms, then when you step into this main passage way, the access point to the metro station and underground tram stop will be ahead of you.

If you will be connecting to the trams and metro then once you are in the main passage way at the station, look out for the easy to miss capital letter 'M' on this sign pictured above. It is pointing the way to the somewhat anonymous entrance to the Metro station.

The lift on the platforms (track/voie/spoor), will take you directly down into the main main passage way.

The most obvious street exits are at either end of 'Le Couloir Principal/Hoofdgang’ and there are taxi ranks at each of these exits.

This part of the station is also used by the Eurostar Thalys trains, the TGV trains and most, but not all, of the ICE departures from Bruxelles-Midi. If you're in luck your onward train will be leaving from the adjacent voie (platform/track) which will be just steps away. Though the most likely scenario is that you'll need to descend from where the Eurostar will have arrived. The escalators will take you down into an obvious route to the waiting area for the other high-speed departures. If you use the elevator you will need to cross the main passage way in the station to access this waiting area, it will be to the left of the SNCB international travel desk.

To voies (platforms/tracks) 7 -22

The trains on to other destinations in Belgium and some of the ICE trains on to Germany will leave from voies (platforms/tracks) 7 -22. If you won't mind using the stairs, when you step off the foot of the escalators there will be passage way, the Couloir Secondaire, which provides a short-cut to voies (platforms/tracks) 7 -22. Though using sets of stairs up to each set of platforms/tracks is the only way to access the trains from here. So if you want to use the escalators or lifts, head into the main passage way, 'Le Couloir Principal/Hoofdgang’.

If you use the lift (elevator) to exit from voies (platforms/tracks) 3 -6, you can step out of the lift into this main passage way, check the details of your onward departure and then use a different lift to access the the voie that your onward train will be leaving from.

Taking an ICE train on to Germany:

Most, but not all, of the ICE trains on to Germany depart from voies (platforms/tracks) 3 to 6 which comprise the main high-speed terminal within Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel Zuid station. It has its own waiting area, which also provides the most obvious route to the trains by using escalators.

The Eurostar trains which travel beyond Bruxelles to Amsterdam also use this part of the station and that includes the train which typically departs London at 11:04 and usually connects into the 14:25 ICE departure on to Koln/Cologne and Frankfurt. Making the connection between these trains can, but not always, be as simple as, descending from the Eurostar by escalator, confirming the onward departure and then heading up an escalator to the ICE train. There's a possibility that the ICE train will be just steps away on an adjacent voie (platform/track).

The timetable is arranged, so that the majority connections at Bruxelles Midi/Zuid station, between the arrival of a Eurostar from London and the departure of an ICE on to Germany are around 20 minutes.

However, security checks can now be carried out at Bruxelles-Midi in the part of the station (voies/sporen/platforms/tracks 3 - 6) USUALLY used by the ICE trains. How long it takes to pass through these security checks inevitably varies according to how busy the station is, but twenty minutes should nearly always be enough time. Regardless of whether the security checks are being carried out, the ICE train on to Germany will typically hang back for a few minutes, depending on when the 'connecting' Eurostar is actually arriving. Though if the Eurostar is running late and you have a tightly timed connection, a good idea is to move towards the front of the train before it arrives in Bruxelles/Brussels.

The Eurostar trains which have Bruxelles as a final destination will arrive at voies (platforms/tracks) 1 or 2 and from these platforms there are usually two options to take which lead on to the ICE trains.

If the ICE train will leaving from voies (platforms/tracks) 7-10, don't turn left into the lounge area, instead go straight ahead and you'll come to sets of escalators which lead directly up to them.

• Approximately half-way along each of platforms (voies) 1 and 2 is an escalator, which leads down away from the trains. From the foot of this escalator there's easy access to that lounge area which gives access to voies (platforms/tracks) 3 - 6. There's also access to a passage way which has stairs and lifts (elevators) up to voies (platforms/tracks) 7 - 22. Though the escalators on platforms (voies) 1 and 2 can be switched out of use and when they are, this alternative route isn't available.

If your reserved seats are in the rear half of the Eurostar train, so that you'll either by these escalators when you step off the train, or will come to them as you walk along the platform, using these escalators are the logical option for heading to the ICE train. However, if your seats are toward the front of the Eurostar then that first option is the route to take. You might save around a minute if you were to head for those escalators instead, but if they are not in use, the quicker option will have been to use the route from the main exit, passed the front of the trains

If you'll need to use the lift (elevator) you'll have to exit by the front of the trains, there is more than one lift, but queues can build up, which will inevitably put pressure on making the connection against the clock.

Eurostar now operates the trains to and from London and what were the Thalys services between Bruxelles and both Germany and The Netherlands. So if the Eurostar arrives in Bruxelles too late to make a connection on what were these Thalys trains, any tickets/reservations can be transferred to a subsequent train free of charge.

You can do this at the SNCB International ticket desk in Bruxelles-Midi station, it's located by the entrance to the part of the station that the ICE and Thalys trains depart from; look out for the purple/pink windows and doors. Though if possible, try to avoid having to make the final connections of the day into trains on from Bruxelles.

taking an ICE service on to Germany

There is relatively new E.U. legislation which protects travellers against financial loss in the event of missed connections due to train delays, but it only applies to 'through tickets' . The Eurostar terms and conditions specifically state that when booking journeys which combine Eurostar + Thalys trains 'through tickets' will be issued. However, 'for all other journeys that combine a Eurostar Service and a service provided by another carrier(s), including when purchased in a single commercial transaction, those tickets will be separate contracts and issues regarding delays, missed connections, cancellations, compensation, and the management of aftersales will be handled accordingly'.

So for tickets booked for journeys involving a combination of Eurostar + ICE trains (which are no longer sold by Eurostar, you will be relying on the Agreement on Journey Continuation (AJC) policy ]( https://www.cer.be/cer-eu-projects-initiatives/agreement-on-journey-continuation-ajc )

DB, which operates the ICE trains, has signed up to this and it covers the scenario when a traveller holds separate transport 'contracts' for an end-to-end journey involving more than one train.

So this agreement applies both when 'a bundle' of tickets / contracts is issued as the result of a single transaction - and if travellers have bought several different tickets for their journey, 'even from different sales channels/ticket providers. As long as the passenger had planned enough connecting time to change trains (called “reasonable connecting time”), the AJC will apply' .

You need to use the international terminal at the station to access to the Thalys trains departing from Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel Zuid . When you are in the main street level passage way at the station, the ‘Couloir Principal' it is located on the right; on the other side of the 'Channel Terminal' (Eurostar Departures) and the Thalys Information desks

The majority of the connections between the arrival of a Eurostar train and the departure of a Thalys train on to The Netherlands are around 50mins. So if the departure/arrival times and price suit; target these connections that have a total journey time of 4hr 35min - 4hr 50mins.

50 minutes in Bruxelles should ensure a stress-free transfer at Midi/Zuid station, even if the Eurostar arrives up to 20 mins late.

In the unlikely event of a Eurostar arriving too late to make a booked connection into a Thalys train, reservations and tickets for the next Thalys train to depart will be re-issued free of charge at the Thalys Information desks.

Security checks have now been introduced at Bruxelles-Midi in the part of the station used by the other international high speed trains (voies/sporen/platforms/tracks 3 - 6). How long it takes to pass through these security checks inevitably varies according to how busy the station is.

Travelling on a Saturday

However, Saturday is not the best day of the week to travel between London and Amsterdam by this combination of Eurostar and Thalys trains. Three of the four connections on Saturdays have journey times of around 5hr 40mins; which involve spending more than 90mins at Bruxelles Midi/Zuid station between trains.

It's worth checking the location of your final destination in the city before arriving at Bruxelles-Midi station, as transferring to the Metro or tram may NOT be the best option. Your Eurostar ticket will be valid on to any other TRAIN station in central Bruxelles which the mainline and NOT the metro trains, call at.

To Le Grand Place from Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station:

Head to Bruxelles-Central station; the Metro and tram stops in the area aren't any nearer. All trains heading north from voies/sporen/platforms/tracks 9-22 will call at Bruxelles-Central, though it can be tricky to work out which will be the next train to depart; though all of the trains heading to Brussels Airport will be calling at Bruxelles-Central.

To the northern area of the city from Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station:

Those trains to Bruxelles-Central also all call at Bruxelles-Nord , so if you're heading to that part of town, don't take the tram.

To The Council of European Union offices

If you're heading for the area around those offices take a train (and not the metro) to Bruxelles-Schuman station. Also If you're heading for the area around The European Parliament building take a train (and not the metro) to Bruxelles-Luxembourg station.

Trains heading to Namur/Namen, Gembloux, Louvain-la-Neuve, Luxembourg, Liege-Palais and Ottignies all call at both Bruxelles-Schuman and Bruxelles-Luxembourg.

To the area south of The Grand Place

If your final destination is to the south of Le Grand Place, in the area around the Manneken Pis statue, the easiest option isn't to take the train, but to take tram lines 3 or 4 heading north to the Anneessens stop instead.

If your final destination is in the area to the north of the Grand Place around the De Brouckére or Rogier tram stops, then also take trams line 3 (heading to Esplanade) or line 4 (heading to Noordstation). Avoid taking tram line 51.
