Berlin is a city where families will feel welcome.

Germany’s capital , known for cherishing tolerance and inclusivity, plus a free-spirited, bohemian vibe, is a destination where parenting doesn’t have to limit the parents' fun. From beer garden shindigs to outdoor techno festivals, tots in prams and anti-noise earmuffs are an integral part of the action.

Whether on the go with toddlers or teens, Berlin bear-hugs family travelers with cool entertainment , from grown-up social spaces where kids are gladly accepted to multi-aged attractions. Here’s what you need to know when traveling with kids in Berlin.

A young boy leaps into his father's arms from a log while messing around in a playground at the park together

Is Berlin good for kids?

German parenting, compared to most other non-European standards, is considered to be laissez-faire. Children are given freedom to explore their individuality and express themselves in public, especially outdoors – although free rein stops at misbehavior. Particularly in Berlin, a proudly progressive and liberally minded city, children are allowed everywhere, keeping businesses conscious of family’s needs.

This is most abundant in Berlin’s bountiful outdoors. About a third of the city is covered in green open spaces, with around 2500 well-landscaped parks each with their own unique character: from lush gardens to paved walking paths and shady picnic spots. Urban recreation goes beyond your usual swings and sandpits; ping-pong tables are ubiquitous, as are massive wood jungle gyms with footbridges, slides and climbable walls. Rest assured, in the residential areas away from busy main streets, a park or playground is usually close by and ready to entertain the children you're traveling with.

Dining out shouldn’t be a big to-do, with highchairs and children’s menus at most restaurants. Even some fine-dining establishments welcome children and cater to dietary needs, though asking ahead is a must. Less formal German restaurants, like beer gardens and cafes, are definitely best suited to family time with playgrounds and easeful self-service.

Where is the best place to stay in Berlin with kids

When choosing family accommodations in Berlin, consider staying close to larger parks and open-air markets, where open space, live music and snack vendors abound. In Prenzlauer Berg , Mauerpark has a must-visit Sunday flea market and Schöneberg’s Gleisdreieck is a top park for families with skateboarding, soccer and not-your-average play areas for bouncing and climbing.

Best things to do in Berlin with babies and toddlers

Explore the river and canals.

Berlin’s waterways aren’t swim-friendly, but catch the drift in other ways. Take a breezy boat tour along the Spree River for panoramic views of the big attractions , or paddle onto Kreuzberg and  Neukölln ’s less-busy canals. And, if you’re still set on swimming, there’s Badeschiff , a pool built into the Spree from a converted cargo ship. Parents can take in Badeschiff’s trendy, beach club-esque vibe, à la DJs and yoga classes, with youngsters in tow – and admission for babies and children aged under 2 is free.

Go for a picnic

Park picnics are guaranteed fun and budget-friendly . Diverse landscapes feature lakes, vibrant flora and fauna, and even the odd swan or fox sighting. Pick a green lung with excellent people-watching, like  Tempelhofer Feld often full of kite-surfers and musicians, and Mauerpark, where graffiti artists and buskers gravitate. Both these options also allow barbecuing; pick up a single-use grill set from the supermarket and a kebab tray, and you’re set.

Check out an interactive museum.

Berlin has a smorgasbord of cool museums with diverse appeal for all ages; good luck picking just one! The  Naturkunde boasts a gigantic T-Rex skeleton and other ogle-worthy bony treasures and taxidermy, while the  Technikmuseum (German Museum of Technology) claims mechanical marvels with vintage locomotives and exhibits on magnetism and aerospace.

Get wild at Berlin Zoo

Berlin Zoo is one of the world’s oldest and largest. Pandas, big cats, rare birds – name the species, and they’re here. Inside tip: Can’t swing an all-day visit? The adjacent Bikini Berlin mall offers surprisingly great (and free!) views of the monkey enclosure from its rooftop restaurant and upstairs terrace.

Three teenage girls roller-skate on the runway of a former airport, now a vast park in Berlin

Best things to do in Berlin with tweens and teenagers

Hang out in a beer garden.

In some places in the world, children and drinking establishments are kept firmly apart, but Berlin’s enormous beer gardens are perfect for idyllic family time. At Café am Neuen See in Tiergarten , play lawn games, watch soccer, or paddle boat on a pond. At the BRLO Brewhouse , craft beer is served against its “backyard,” grassy Gleisdreieck Park where skateboarding, hip-hop troupes, and Frisbee abound. Either way, adults can indulge in true Deutsch escapism: wursts and beer beneath Black Forest-worthy trees and fairy lights.

Party at a street festival

Parenting in Berlin is very anti-FOMO with family-friendly street festivals and open-air events. Clubbing is the soundtrack to Berlin city life, so kids are exposed to electronic music and responsible partying from an early age. At summer parades, for example Karneval der Kulturen and Pride (Christopher Street Day), all ages dance to live music and sport colorful costumes, celebrating multiculturalism and diversity. Teens can paint rainbow signs and tiny ravers take part in strollers and soundproof earmuffs – although, big crowds, provocative outfits and public drinking may be a turn-off for some families.

Planning tips

Public transportation  can have its trying moments – namely, a lack of elevators and crowded, narrow doorways during peak hours – but don’t rule it out. Designated areas for prams and family seating do help. If you decide to go for this budget-friendly option, remember: don’t hesitate to ask a local for help carrying your pram down the stairs, or asking someone to move for a child to sit. Berliners may be gruff, but when it comes to families, they’re very understanding.

In addition to public transit, you can also consider taking car shares between some locations or renting a bicycle for some days (about €10 per day. Bring a booster seat to drive in car shares or, for extra freedom, rent a bike and baby buggy.

BER (Berlin) airport has a family fast-track queue, but it can get congested – just in case, reserve a security time slot free of charge on the airport website.

Most museums and attractions, as well as public transport, are free for children under the age of six, easing travel costs. For older children, consider the family  Berlin WelcomeCard , which includes entry passes to select museums and attractions plus unlimited public transport for one cost (and up to three children aged 14 and under).

Day 1 of Berlin Itinerary

You could opt for walking, cycling or a Segway tour for the main attractions in the city. We, however, decided to switch on google maps and see the top attractions ourselves on the first day of our 4-day Berlin itinerary. Except for the visit to the Dome at Reichstag, none of this requires any pre-booking.

Our Berlin family vacation was filled with exciting adventures as we explored the top attractions in Berlin that are perfect with kids.

1. Checkpoint Charlie

We started our self-guided walking tour at Checkpoint Charlie located on the corner of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße. Checkpoint Charlie is a border crossing that gained fame during the Cold War era. This is a reminder of the former border crossing, the Cold War and the partition of Berlin. It was also the spot where, in 1961, US and Russian tanks literally lined up to face each other in what the world believed could be the start of another war.

Checkpoint Charlie

Did you know – the name Checkpoint Charlie comes from the NATO phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie).

After the border crossings at Helmstedt-Marienborn (Alpha) and Dreilinden-Drewitz (Bravo), Checkpoint Charlie was the third checkpoint opened by the Allies in and around Berlin.

The museum next to it – Mauermuseum – is known for a good collection of items from 30 years of history. My daughter was restless and hence we did not visit it.

2. Brandenburg Gate

Berlin 4 day itinerary, berlin family vacation, family vacation in berlin, 4 days in berlin, Things to do in berlin with kids, Berlin itinerary with kids, 4 day Berlin itinerary, Berlin with kids

This is an iconic sight for Berlin and one of the famous landmarks in Europe . A fine example of a neo-classical building, the site symbolises a reunified Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Brandenburg Gate is 26 metres high, 65.5 metres long and 11 metres deep, and supported by two rows of six Doric columns.

Designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans, it was inspired by the monumental gateway at the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens.

3. Reichstag

The Reichstag is the current home of the German parliament. We were delighted to note that it is possible to visit the building. You can take a guided tour of this historic building, make sure you book the tour in advance (visit Deutscher Bundestag for more details and for online registration).

Reichstag

The Dome – a glass cupola – sits directly above the debating chamber. It is possible to book a visit to the Dome online as well. We hadn’t done so, but across the Reichstag, there is a pavilion to book visits. Make sure you have an ID with date of birth – passport or driving license – to book the visit.

See if any of these tours interest you for an in-depth immersion –

It is quite an experience to walk up the curving steel ramp and take in the views around the city. A visit to Reichstag is definitely one of the top places to go to in Germany .

4. Tiergarten

A family vacation in Berlin offers an incredible mix of history, culture, and fun for kids. Across the Reichstag is the lovely Tiergarten which kids will love. Visiting this garden during fall is heavenly.

Berlin 4 day itinerary, berlin family vacation, family vacation in berlin, 4 days in berlin, Things to do in berlin with kids, Berlin itinerary with kids, 4 day Berlin itinerary, Berlin with kids

Attractively laid out with an abundance of trees and shrubs and expanses of grass and flower borders, the Tiergarten covers some 520 acres and is a favourite spot for relaxation, walking, and boating.

The park also contains numerous important statues and monuments, including the Statue of Queen Luise erected in 1880, and a Monument to Frederick Wilhelm III unveiled in 1849 with reliefs reflecting the King’s peace-loving disposition.

The most important of the Tiergarten’s monuments, however, is the massive Victory Column, a superb 70-meter-tall structure built on a roundabout and crowned by an eight-meter-high gold statue of Victoria (dubbed Golden Lizzy by locals). Twenty minutes walk through the centre of the park will lead you to the Victory Column, but we decided to not walk that far.

5. Jewish Memorial

We then headed towards the Jewish Holocaust Memorial.

Berlin Jewish Memorial

Peter Eisenman’s 2,700 concrete slabs are arranged in a neat grid spread across 200,000 square feet near the Brandenburg Gate. You are meant to sit amongst these slabs of varying height and contemplate about the horrors of war. Frankly, not much contemplation happened with my daughter jumping around and asking for lunch!

6. Potsdamer Platz

Further on after the memorial is the Potsdamer Platz – an area with skyscrapers, shopping centre, cafes, and bustling activity everywhere. We stopped at Vapiano , a restaurant chain in this area, and my daughter was happy with familiar pasta options.

It is difficult to imagine that this area was an empty wasteland once. Since reunification, what used to be a wasteland with the Berlin Wall running through it, has become a completely new neighbourhood.

Berlin Potsdamer Platz

We ended our self-guided walking tour at Sony Centre, where my daughter had fun, first in the courtyard covered with a tent-like glass roof, and then at the Legoland Discovery Centre, but more on that later.

7. Alexanderplatz

On our way back to the hotel, we passed the city’s most visible landmark – Berlin’s TV Tower. Soaring 368 metres into the sky, Alexanderplatz is not just a popular attraction, it is also the highest building in Europe open to the general public.

Berlin 4 day itinerary, berlin family vacation, family vacation in berlin, 4 days in berlin, Things to do in berlin with kids, Berlin itinerary with kids, 4 day Berlin itinerary, Berlin with kids

We didn’t attempt this, but going up to the revolving Sphere Restaurant and enjoying the spectacular views of the city from there excites many. If you’re planning to do this, then online booking is a must. There are may other options besides a skip-the-line ticket:

It is easy to have a great city break in Berlin with kids. For a family city break in Berlin, this 4-day itinerary offers top things to do in Berlin with kids, allowing them to explore the city’s rich history, and diverse culture.

While my husband was busy with his conference, I had planned the second day of our 4-day trip to Berlin to explore the area in and around Museum Island with my daughter.

Museuminsel

The Unesco Heritage Museum Island or Museuminsel, comprises 5 conveniently adjacent museums, all located along the river Spree. It is a beautiful area to walk around and get your fill of history and culture. You can book a Museumsinsel-Ticket which is valid for 1 day in all houses of the Museum Island (Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Bodemuseum, Das Panorama, Alte Nationalgalerie).

The Pergamon Museum has vast treasures from ancient times and Islamic art. Neues Museum holds Egyptian, prehistoric and classical treats, while the Bode Museum has a sculpture collection. Altes museum houses the Crown Jewels and other royal treasures. Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie) has a fine collection of 19th-century paintings.

After the cultural immersion in Museuminsel, you can take a boat tour on river Spree:

1. Berliner Dom

Berliner Dom or Berlin Cathedral is also located within this area and was our first stop.

Famous for its 75-meter-high dome with its old bell from 1532, Berlin Cathedral Church was completed in 1905 on the site of an earlier cathedral dating from the time of Frederick the Great.

Berlin 4 day itinerary, berlin family vacation, family vacation in berlin, 4 days in berlin, Things to do in berlin with kids, Berlin itinerary with kids, 4 day Berlin itinerary, Berlin with kids

More than seeing the actual church interiors, my daughter and I had fun climbing the 270 steps to the outer walkway of the Dome. The climb is worthwhile to get panoramic views of the City centre, Museum Island, the Palace Square, and Lustgarten.

2. Pergamon Museum

Imagine walking into a huge room that has a well-preserved Roman Market Gate from the 2nd century AD! Filled with shimmering examples of intricately designed facades and gates, 2000 years old and more, Pergamon is the most visited museum in Berlin.

Pergamon Museum

While queues can get really long during summer we visited it in mid-October, that too in the early evening time, and so walked in without any wait time. It is an excellent site for ancient architecture and Islamic art. The Pergamon Altar, north wing and gallery of Hellenistic art are, however, closed to the public until 2019 due to refurbishment.

It would not be of much interest to a child is my guess, and I was genuinely surprised when my 6-year-old agreed to take an audio guide by herself and walking around the museum listening to explanations of artefacts from Babylon era. Go figure!

3. DDR Museum

One of the things to do in Berlin with kids is a visit to the DDR museum. This interactive museum – an immersive experience of everyday life in former East Germany – would be of interest to a child. We decided to give the rest of the 4 museums a miss, and head here. It is a short walk behind the Berliner Dom.

Berlin 4 day itinerary, berlin family vacation, family vacation in berlin, 4 days in berlin, Things to do in berlin with kids, Berlin itinerary with kids, 4 day Berlin itinerary, Berlin with kids

Visitors are encouraged to touch, hold and interact with a range of objects and installations, from products used in East Germany to the workings of the Stasi to a fresco in praise of Communism. It is genuinely a hands-on experience of history, as they claim. Do visit their website for more details: DDR Museum

Day 3: Things to do in Berlin with kids

It is unbelievable that we spent the good part of a full day at the Zoologischer Garten or the Berlin Zoo! But that’s how large and interactive and amazing it turned out to be. It is one of the top zoos in Europe to visit. My husband was again busy with work, and my daughter and I spent the third day together enjoying this zoo.

My daughter loved the day we spent at the Berlin Zoo and the Aquarium within the premises. I cannot recommend this enough for kids. The park is beautiful, and some of the not-so-common-animals-to-sight – polar bear, orangutan, polar wolves, penguins, sea lions – will delight even the adults.

Ditto for the Aquarium that houses the largest collection of marine and amphibian species. There are 3 levels, marine animals on the first floor, reptiles and insects on the second and finally snakes and amphibians on the third floor.

Berlin 4 day itinerary, berlin family vacation, family vacation in berlin, 4 days in berlin, Things to do in berlin with kids, Berlin itinerary with kids, 4 day Berlin itinerary, Berlin with kids

With more than 15,000 animals representing some 1,400 species, including pandas and apes in large open-air enclosures, as well as predator and nocturnal animal houses and Europe’s biggest aviary, expect to spend the best part of a day here.

Day 4 of Berlin Itinerary with kids

On the last day of our time in Berlin, we split during the morning day. I was interested in Street Art in Berlin, and while we had seen some during the first day on our self-guided walk, I was interested in a Street Art tour.

Offbeat idea: Street Art in Berlin

Street art in Berlin is legendary. You can take a walk around the city and stumble upon many interesting pieces. What I did was to take a Street Art tour with Alternative Berlin. It was a great way to spend 3.5 hours. Not only was the street art interesting, even better were the rambling stories that our guide Jake shared with the group.

Berlin street art

The Tour ended close to Berlin Wall, and I couldn’t leave without exploring the East Side Gallery. Today, you can find traces of the wall in a few parts of the city. The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall. The open-air art gallery on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain is the longest continuous section of the Berlin Wall still in existence. In 1990, more than 100 artists from over 20 countries decorated this stretch of the hinterland wall with their artworks.

From 13 August 1961 until 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall divided the city into East and West Berlin.

Berlin street art

Legoland Discovery Centre

My daughter did not enjoy the commentary at the start of the Street Art tour, and my husband was happy to spend some time with her exploring other points of attraction for kids. We agreed to meet when my Street Art Tour ended.

Legoland Discovery Centre, located in Sony Film Centre delighted both of them. After all, they had over four million LEGO blocks at their disposal. It is a good way to spend a couple of hours and give your child a break after a historic walk or a visit to a few museums.

Sea Life Berlin

I thought after the Aquarium at Berlin Zoo, my daughter would be more than done with animals! Clearly not.

She enjoyed her visit to Sea Life – a good variety of marine life from sharks to seahorses to stingrays is to be seen. But my husband and I felt that this was overkill after the Berlin Zoo visit. The entry ticket is quite expensive as well.

Things to Do in Berlin with kids

Except for the Street Art Tour, my daughter accompanied me everywhere. We discovered the best family-friendly attractions in Berlin with our 4-day itinerary. From exploring historical landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, to visiting interactive museums like the DDR Museum, there are endless opportunities for learning and fun.

But there were some sites and activities that were planned specifically for her. Here are my recommendations on what to do in Berlin with kids – Berlin Zoo, Legoland Discovery Centre, DDR Museum.

The numerous parks in the city make the city break in Berlin with kids a delight! My daughter loved running around in the various parks around Museum Island, and the neighbourhood park near the hotel.

Berlinn

Deutsches Technikmuseum and Museum of Natural History were recommended to me – specifically for kids. But we didn’t end up going there.

If you are visiting Munich before or after Berlin, do check out this post on things to do in Munich with kids .

When to visit Berlin with kids

I have visited Berlin earlier in April. Springtime in Berlin brings in pleasant daytime weather but the nights are still cold. It is a good place to visit if you are planning spring break in Europe .

This second trip of mine, in mid-October with family, was my first experience of fall, and I must admit I couldn’t get over the myriad hues of orange, yellow and red. Summer is a good time to visit the city, but autumn is even better. The crowds at top attractions and museums are much lesser, the summer buzz has not died down and you will love the fall colours in parks around. Berlin also makes for a good winter city break in Europe

Food & Stay recommendations

It is best to stay in the city or a metro station where many sights are within walking distance. Look up hotel options within this sprawling city:

Berlin is a sprawling city and there are many neighbourhoods to stay in. You would be spoilt for options for the best hotels in Berlin in each of these neighbourhoods.

The city is bursting with restaurants and flavours. Besides the expected German, European and Italian cuisines, it was interesting to see the sheer number of Vietnamese, French and Japanese restaurants. Here are some of my recommended restaurants –  Hummus & Friends (Israeli cuisine),  Sucre et Sel (French),  Vapiano (Italian) and  Nithan Thai (Fusion Thai).

Berlin is not really known for a vibrant cafe culture as say, Amsterdam or Paris is. But we found there are several delightful cafes in every neighbourhood to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or a cuppa during the day.

Berlin Cafe

Some recommended cafes and an ice-cream parlour that we enjoyed are –  Zimt & Zucker , Distrikt Coffee ,  Funk You and  Eispatiserrie Hokey Pokey .

Fabulous! Exploring a city by self is the best; would love to discover Berlin someday!

I travel mostly with my family, and love discovering new places with them. Berlin is a great city to explore.

Did you visit that huge Stalin statue and the park behind!! It is awesome.

No, I didn’t Kaustubh. I just looked up images of the statue, looks impressive. As to parks, there were so many in the city, and I really enjoyed the fall colours there.

This is great! Just looking at the piece of the Berlin Wall gives me chills! The DDR museum sounds like a great place for the kids to experience some hands on history.

DDR museum was a good find, very interactive. A lot of new information presented in an interesting way for adults as well.

I’m dying to visit Berlin again. There’s so many great things to do for kids of all ages. Your suggestion of the DDR museum definitely interests me!

The iconic Elefantentor (elephant gate) welcomes visitors to the zoo and attractions like the hippopotamus aquarium, panda enclosure, and sprawling aviary are a highlight. There are also several different themed playgrounds for kids to play and climb.

For one of the best views in the city, send the kids up the many stairs of the Victory Column and relish in their exhaustion afterwards by actually enjoying a relaxing beer at and snack at one of Berlin's best biergartens , Café am Neuen See . Kollwitzplatz

Kollwitzplatz, in the heart of family-friendly Prenzlauer Berg , is the site of many playgrounds, kid-oriented shops, and a lovely farmers' market.

German Museum for Technology

A great rainy day option is the German Museum for Technology ( Deutsches Technikmuseum ). You can't miss it, it has a real airplane sitting on top of its roof visible from the S-Bahn.

Your kids will be enthralled by 14 different exhibition departments, featuring locomotives, airplanes, engines, ships, and much more. Almost every department offers engaging activities – kids can print or make their own paper and climb into a model mine shaft. The museum also offers an interesting audio tour especially designed for kids (also in English).

Don't forget to explore the outdoors where you can see the old Anhalter Bahnhof (train station), observe a functional water mill, walk along wind mills and check out the traditional beer brewing process.

Another great rainy day activity in Berlin  is Potsdamer Platz with its shiny modern architecture and the impressive dome of the Sony Center . With its many events and programs throughout the year, it is always good to pass through. Plus it has fun places to visit, with movie theatres, stores, restaurants, and a film museum.

The biggest attraction for young visitors is the indoor theme park, Legoland. Marvel at a miniature Berlin, built with 1.5 million Lego bricks, and enjoy fun rides and adventure trails made completely out of Lego. The park also offers plenty of space for children to get creative and to build their own Lego masterpiece.

Getting There : Metro Stop - Potsdamer Platz (Line U2, S1, S2, S25)

Boat Tour on the River Spree

Your kids are tired from walking around, but there is still more of Berlin that you want to see? Take your family on a boat tour through Berlin's historic city center and watch the landmarks glide past as you drift down the River Spree.

A boat tour is a wonderful experience on a Berlin summer day, but you can also take the tour when it rains; sit inside, have a hot chocolate , and enjoy the sights through the panoramic glass windows. Hop on a boat at Museums Island , where many different tours are offered (45-60 minutes).

Getting There : Metro Stop - Hackescher Markt (Line S5, S7, S9)

Exploring Berlin: A Family-Friendly Adventure

by Original Berlin Tours | Mar 7, 2024 | Original Berlin

Introduction

When it comes to planning a family vacation, choosing the right destination can make all the difference. Berlin, the vibrant capital city of Germany, offers a wealth of experiences and attractions that cater to both adults and children alike. From its rich history and cultural landmarks to its green spaces and family-friendly activities, Berlin has something for everyone. In this article, we’ll dive into why Berlin is an excellent choice for families, highlighting key aspects that make it a top-notch destination for your next adventure.

Rich History and Learning Opportunities

Berlin is a city steeped in history, providing an excellent opportunity for families to learn and explore together. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Berlin Wall, a powerful symbol of the Cold War era. A visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial allows for a profound understanding of the impact it had on the city and its inhabitants.

Museums in Berlin are also a treasure trove of knowledge. The Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to five world-class museums, including the Pergamon Museum and the Neues Museum, where the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti resides. These museums offer interactive exhibits and child-friendly activities to engage young minds while providing an educational experience.

Parks and Green Spaces

Despite being a bustling metropolis, Berlin is also known for its abundance of parks and green spaces. Families can take a break from the city’s hustle and bustle and enjoy some outdoor activities. Tiergarten, for instance, is a vast urban park comparable to New York City’s Central Park. It offers lush green landscapes, picnic areas, and even a boating lake.

Another popular green space is the Mauerpark, famous for its Sunday flea market and open-air karaoke sessions. Families can explore the market, sample local delicacies, and listen to talented individuals belt out their favorite tunes. The park also features a playground and an area where children can enjoy performances by jugglers and street artists.

Family-Friendly Attractions

Berlin offers a wide variety of family-friendly attractions that are sure to keep children entertained. The Berlin Zoo, with its extensive collection of animals, is a must-visit destination. Children can catch a glimpse of rare species and even witness feeding sessions and animal shows.

Aquarium Berlin, located next to the zoo, is another fantastic option. It houses a diverse range of aquatic life and provides an immersive experience through its walkthrough tunnels and interactive exhibits. Kids will be amazed as they walk beneath the sharks and rays swimming above their heads.

For science enthusiasts, the Labyrinth Children’s Museum offers a hands-on exploration of various scientific phenomena. Children can experiment, create, and learn while having endless fun.

Transportation and Accessibility

One of the advantages of visiting Berlin with your family is its excellent transportation system. The city has an extensive network of buses, trams, and trains, making it easy to navigate and explore. The Berlin WelcomeCard, available in different durations, offers unlimited access to public transportation, ensuring that you can seamlessly move from one attraction to another without any hassle. Additionally, children under six years of age can travel for free.

Child-Friendly Dining Options

When hunger strikes, Berlin doesn’t disappoint in terms of family-friendly dining options. From traditional German fare to international cuisines, there is something to suit every palate. Many restaurants in Berlin offer children’s menus or cater specifically to families, providing a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

The vibrant neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg is particularly family-friendly, with numerous cafes and restaurants offering play areas and dedicated spaces for children. Parents can enjoy a meal while their little ones have fun in a safe environment.

Berlin effortlessly combines history, culture, and family-friendly activities, making it an excellent choice for families looking to create lasting memories. From the rich historical landmarks to the abundance of green spaces and the diverse range of attractions, Berlin offers a well-rounded experience that will captivate both children and adults alike. So, whether you’re exploring the remnants of the Berlin Wall or immersing yourself in the city’s vibrant parks, Berlin is sure to provide an unforgettable adventure for the entire family.

A family city guide to Berlin

With attractions designed specifically for teens, tweens and toddlers, and adult spaces that welcome kids, the German capital is a fantastic destination for families.

It’s not hard to spot Berlin’s family-friendliness in kid-orientated cafes and the city’s well-maintained, imaginatively themed playgrounds. Parks and woodlands provide plentiful picnicking opportunities and, in hot weather, lakes offer sunbathing, standup pad or some ankle-deep splashing about. And despite the name, beer gardens are a failsafe option for simple snacks and a space to run around.

Berlin’s neighbourhoods are very walkable and its public transport network efficient and cheap. Its wide, flat streets, bike lanes and family-friendly cycle hire make two wheels a great way to get around while taking in the city’s impressive sights, which make Berlin a memorable family destination.

What to do in Berlin with kids

Toddlers:   A popular neighbourhood with young families, Prenzlauer Berg has playgrounds, parks and pretty streets lined with shops selling kids’ clothes and toys, and family-friendly cafes. The MACHmit! Museum , an educational playspace set in a converted church, offers interactive exhibits, including an old printing press, a hall of mirrors and a dressing-up box.

For the musically inclined, the Frank Gehry-designed concert hall at the Barenboim-Said Academy hosts morning concerts for babies under 12 months and afternoon concerts for one- to five-year-olds.

Located in Berlin’s centre and surrounded by sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Tiergarten is a wonderful spot for walking, picnicking or kicking a ball about in the grass. Wander through the woods, spotting various cultural sights and memorials. Of the park’s six playgrounds, the one close to Thomas-Dehler-Strasse is best equipped for toddlers.

Children under 10:   The 30-acre Park am Gleisdreieck offers outdoor activities for all ages, including a ‘nature experience room’, where kids over six are encouraged to get to know animals and plants, or play hide-and-seek.

With its huge wooden ‘Noah’s Ark’ and 150 accompanying animal sculptures made from recycled everyday items, ANOHA , the Children's World of the Jewish Museum Berlin, is an interactive space for discovery and play. Under-10s can get stuck into projects at various activity stations, such as constructing a floatable ark.

UNESCO World Heritage site Museum Island holds five world-class museums, which are all full of wonder and free of charge for children, while the interactive DeJa Vu Museum will provide hours of fun with a thunderstorm room, plasma ball and an interactive sandbox that displays three-dimensional maps.

Tweens and teenagers:   With a Douglas C-47B Skytrain aircraft suspended above its entrance and highlights including a hall full of vintage locomotives and a simulator that lets future sea captains steer their ship into port, the vast Deutsches Technikmuseum will absorb transport and technology fans for hours.

For those ready to learn about the darkest chapter of German history, the Topography of Terror museum , located on the site of the former SS and Gestapo headquarters, documents the crimes they committed across Europe. Checkpoint Charlie is a few minutes’ walk away; the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe can be reached in around 20 minutes on foot.

To experience a little of Berlin’s alternative side, watch locals and tourists belt out their favourite tunes at Bearpit Karaoke, held on Sunday afternoons at the outdoor amphitheatre at Mauerpark. Wander through Kreuzberg and across the doubledecker Oberbaum Bridge to Friedrichshain to spot some of the city’s best known street art.

Where to eat in Berlin with kids

Toddlers:   Highchairs, changing facilities and kids’ menus are available at many restaurants, but ‘kindercafés’ such as Prenzlauer Berg’s Kindercafé Spielzimmer , with its indoor playground complete with ball pit, are designed specifically with small children in mind. A more grown-up afternoon can be spent at Klunkerkranich , a bohemian rooftop cultural space with an urban garden, panoramic views and a sandpit. Park-adjacent Café Blume offers an outdoor terrace, an indoor slide and breakfast buffets on weekends.

Children under 10:   At the southern end of the Tiergarten, beer garden Café am Neuen See serves up a lakeside brunch that includes waffles and pancakes. There’s a sandpit, lots of space to run around in and you can even rent a boat. After the DDR Museum, head to Katchi Ice Cream in Hackescher Markt for ice cream sandwiches, sundaes or German summer favourite spaghettieis (an ice cream dish made to resemble spaghetti). For traditional, hearty Berlin food, spend a cosy evening at Kreuzberg’s Max & Moritz .

Tweens and teenagers:   Pick up sandwiches, pretzels and cinnamon rolls at the Eberstrasse branch of Zeit für Brot on your way to Bearpit Karaoke; if it’s hot, there’s great ice cream at nearby Hokey Pokey . The diverse offerings at historic Kreuzberg market hall Markthalle Neun will resolve any disagreements over what to eat for lunch. Grab Berlin’s most famous burger and fries from the Burgermeister at Schlesisches Tor. Close to the Oberbaum Bridge, it’s housed in a former public toilet.

Where to stay in Berlin with kids

Toddlers:   Home to some of Berlin’s best-known attractions, Mitte is a great, central neighbourhood to use as a base. On a quiet street off Rosenthaler Platz, Circus Apartments can provide everything from highchairs to a babysitting service and electric cargo bike rental. In west Berlin, 25Hours Bikini Berlin’s eclectically decorated large and extra-large rooms offer plenty of space for families, and the ‘jungle’ rooms that overlook Berlin Zoo.

Children under 10:   Charming Prenzlauer Berg is a family-friendly neighbourhood full of cafes, restaurants and playgrounds, and has great public transport links. The serviced Brilliant Apartments are spacious and well-equipped, some with their own washing machines, and are located just around the corner from an organic supermarket. In a convenient central location, the Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz has family rooms with double sofas or fold-out wall beds, plus kids’ menus and colouring activities in the hotel restaurant.

Tweens and teenagers:   Multicultural Neukölln is one of the city’s hippest neighbourhoods and remains a great option for a less touristy Berlin experience. Earn cool points by putting teens up in a retro caravan at the Hüttenpalast , an indoor camping hotel in a former vacuum cleaner factory. For large families or those travelling together, Numa’s Kater location, a listed building in Friedrichshain, has apartments for up to nine guests.

They come with an audio guide to tell you what you’re seeing, and you can get out at any stop to explore further.

Berlin Zoological Garden

Berlin Zoological Garden—or simply Berlin Zoo—is the oldest and most famous zoo in Germany. Situated within Tiergarten, it was inaugurated in 1844 and spans more than 35 hectares. Berlin Zoo is home to more than 20,000 animals, and even boasts its very own aquarium, though a separate ticket is required for the aquarium.

elephants at the Berlin Zoo - things to do with kids in Berlin

With all this going on, it’s not hard to see why this is the most popular zoo in Europe. This is definitely a fun activity for Berlin with kids.

Opening hours: late March to late September, daily 9am to 6:30pm; hours are shorter at other times of the year Location: Hardenbergpl. 8, 10787 Berlin Cost: starting at 9 euros for kids, 19 euros for adults

Did you know Berlin actually has two zoos? When Berlin was split into East and West, the West already had a zoo, and authorities in the East decided they should have one there too.

Tierpark is Europe’s largest animal park. It’s a little less flashy than the Berlin Zoo, and it’s a bit farther from the center of the city, on the grounds of the former Friedrichsfelde Palace.

Berlin Tierpark zoo east side - activities in Berlin with children

The zoo cares for 7,250 animals from 840 species around the world, which means a visit here offers a chance to get up close and personal with some incredible creatures—including flamingos, red pandas, tigers, and a whole host of reptiles. It’s a great option for a family day out in Berlin.

Opening hours: late March to late September, daily 9am to 6:30pm; hours are shorter at other times of the year Location: Am Tierpark 125, 10319 Berlin Cost: starting at 8.50 euros for kids, 17.50 euros for adults

Victory Column

Berlin’s Victory Column , or Siegessäule in German, is one of the more recognizable monuments in the city. The 67 meter (about 220 foot) column sits at a roundabout in the middle of Tiergarten Park. It was initially constructed as a monument to Prussia’s victory over Napoleon in the Franco-German war.

However, it was originally located in front of the Reichstag building. In the late 30s, Hitler was trying to accomplish his vision of the Third Reich, and in 1938 he had the Victory Column moved to its current location.

Victory Column and view - things to do in Berlin kids

Today this is a popular tourist attraction, and climbing it is definitely one of the fun things to do in Berlin with kids. Especially if you feel like your kids need to burn some energy, because there’s no elevator at this attraction.

Pay a small fee and climb the 285 stairs to reach the viewing platform, where you and your family will be rewarded with excellent views of the surrounding park and the city of Berlin. Just don’t try to cross the street to get there! Reach the Victory Column using the underground passage.

If you’re anything like me, that number of stairs might sound intimidating, but I promise, it’s one of my favorite places for views of Berlin .

Opening hours: April to October: Mon-Fri 9:30am to 6:30pm, Sat & Sun 9:30am to 7pm; November to March: Mon-Sun 9:30am to 5:30pm Location: Großer Stern 1, 10557 Berlin Cost: 4 euros, cash only

The memorial consists of 2,710 concrete blocks of varying heights, and the ground they sit on is an uneven slope similar to a wave. The information center showcases letters, diaries, photographs, and biographies of the victims to help personalize the experience.

This is a good place to teach your kids about this important history. It might be especially good for kids who are too young for visiting a concentration camp.

One of Berlin’s favorite parks is Tempelhofer Feld, a former airport that has been turned into a park. In 1948-1949, this airport was the hub of the Berlin Airlift, which kept West Berlin supplied with goods during the Berlin Blockade.

Even after the Berlin Wall came down and East and West Germany reunited, Tempelhof Airport continued to operate. It wasn’t until 2008 that the airport closed.

Tempelhof Airport Park kid friendly activities in Berlin

In 2010, it reopened as a public park, and the runways and airport building remain. Today you and your kids can enjoy walking, running, roller blading, cycling, kite surfing, and more all on a former airport runway.

Opening hours: The park is open roughly dawn to dusk Location: Platz d. Luftbrücke 5, 12101 Berlin (airport building) Cost: Free

Little Big City is a place where you and your family can see 750 years of Berlin history in miniature. There are buttons, pedals, and games, making it a fun and interactive experience.

Since Berlin is the world’s capital of spies, it is not surprising that there’s a modern, unique spy museum here. Built in 2015 by Franz-Michael Gunther, the Berlin Spy Museum is a private museum that focuses on showcasing spies and espionage history.

Using current multi-media based technology, visitors will gain an in-depth insight into the history of espionage through the ages. The fun and immersive experience will show your kids how to detect the sneakiest tricks used by secret services and agents.

ANOHA in connection with the Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum is a popular attraction in Berlin, and ANOHA was created across the street in connection with this museum. ANOHA is the Jewish Museum’s Children’s World, and it’s a place for kids who are 3 years old or older and their parents or chaperones. Children can play, explore, and learn.

Even though it’s free to visit ANOHA, it’s a popular museum for children, so it’s highly recommended that you book time slot tickets ahead of time. Even a few weeks out, they can often be booked up. Find more info on their site .

The Reichstag Building is the seat of the German government, and you can actually take a free tour with an audio guide. Bernauer Strasse Wall Memorial

If you’re interested in teaching your children about the Berlin Wall while you’re exploring Berlin, check out the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse. This is a good outdoor memorial where they can learn about the history of the Wall and its effects on the people who lived here. There are info panels and different sections to show you where tunnels were dug, where apartments stood, and more.

It’s well worth going into the Visitors Center to watch the 2 short films about the Wall. They’re shown in English on the half hour and German on the hour, and the two films are 30 minutes total. Halfway down the street is the documentation center where you can go up a few floors to a viewing platform and see over the Wall and into the former death strip.

Berlin Wall Memorial Bernauer Strasse - Berlin things to do with kids

The Bernauer Strasse Wall Memorial is one of the best places for learning about the Berlin Wall and its impact, and it’s one of my favorite Cold War sites in Berlin .

Opening hours, visitors center and documentation center: Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm Opening hours, outdoor memorial: technically daily 8am to 10pm, but there are no gates Location: Bernauer Str. 119, 13355 Berlin (visitors center) Cost: Free

East Side Gallery

If you think your kids are a bit too young to appreciate the Bernauer Strasse Wall Memorial, it might be worth taking them to the East Side Gallery. This is the longest section of the Berlin Wall that still stands . Shortly after the Wall fell, artists from around the world came to paint murals on it, and though some have changed, many are the same paintings (though touched up) from more than 30 years ago.

East Side Gallery artwork - family things to do in Berlin

Berlin, like no other city, stands for the main events of the 20th Century; it was the capital of the Third Reich and the atrocities of the Nazi regime and it exemplifies the Cold War, which divided the world for over 40 years.

We are experienced, qualified, educated academics that guide for years out of passion to the city and love for people and history. We have been ranked top 5 TripAdvisor tour-companies for 6 years consecutively.

Berlin Wall Trail Cycle

This was such a great urban adventure and a brilliant way to take in Berlin. I had no idea that the wall was so huge! I rode an e-bike, which made it easy (even though it was mainly flat!) and the directions were great although I did use the GPX files which I could download onto my phone. What people love about berlin tours.

The tour was good. The hotels were great and the breakfasts were plentiful. The bus driver was very safe and helpful with bags. The guides were of varying satisfaction. I was disappointed that the itinerary stated key sights we would visit but we didn’t actually go inside and free time didn’t allow for all the visits I wanted to do and we didn’t see everything on the itinerary. It was a good taster trip. I see much more on my own.
This tour is not what I expected. People leave and new people join all through the tour so the group is always changing. It is really just a taster tour because you don’t spend a lot of time in one place.
The tour provided fabulous, fun & incredible memories. Plus new friendships with adorable people met.

Cycling with children in Berlin – Is a bike tour around Berlin safe?

We select the routes of our tours carefully , and our guides receive specialist training in managing bike tours . We favour routes that lead away from the busy main roads of the city, and try wherever possible to stick to quiet streets and cycle paths, for maximum safety and enjoyment.

50% of Berlin households do not own a car, and travelling by bike or public transport is the norm here, which means that car drivers are used to cyclists.

The luminous orange vests worn by our bike guides and a volunteer at the back of the bike tour make us easy to spot on the roads. In Berlin it is possible to enjoy a safe and relaxed bike tour, including with children.

Bikes for all ages – Our family friendly bike fleet

When your kids feel comfortable with their bikes, a bike tour in Berlin is safe and relaxed for the whole family.

We have a solution for all ages, from baby seats and child trailers to trailer bikes and trailers, including helmets for children, of course. For self-cycling children, smaller bikes are available in 20, 24 and 26 inch wheel sizes. All these make sure you have a great day with your kids on a bike tour with Berlin on Bike.

  • Chevron down Public or Private Bike Tours?

Berlin on Bike offers daily public bike tours in English, Dutch and German. You can choose from several themed bike routes in our program and usually register at short notice. The average group size is 8 to 12 people, with a maximum of 15 guests. The bicycle tours take place when a minimum of 4 participants registers.

We also offer private bicycle tours: with these your family, friends or colleagues will enjoy the exclusive attention of one of our bike guides. Private tours can be tailored to suit individual needs, including as many breaks as you might wish for, and bespoke catering stops at places requested, as well as detours to particular sites you might be interested in seeing.

In addition to our “main languages” English, Dutch and German, private tours can also be booked in French, Spanish or Swedish.

For the private bike tours, we ask for a little more advance notice when booking, to give us time to find the right guide for your group. However, you may also be lucky with a request at short notice, e.g. the day before.

Booking calendar for public tours Booking form for private tours

  • Chevron down Where do the Family Bicycle Tours start and end?

Our family bike tours start at the Kulturbrauerei (“Culture Brewery” in English) in the Prenzlauer Berg district. The brewery grounds have several entrances, the best way to get to us is through the archway at Knaackstraße 97. From the underground station Eberswalder Straße (underground line 2, three stops north of Alexanderplatz) it’s a 200-metre walk.

For a private family tour with your own bikes, the start can be arranged individually. For an additional charge we can arrange the delivery of bikes for a private tour.  This option is usually more viable for larger groups.

  • Chevron down How many people ride in a group?

On average our group bike tours consist of between eight and twelve participants. On our public bike tours, fifteen people per group is our maximum. If there are more registrations, we provide more guides, to ensure that groups remain manageable in size, for the sake of safety and for the enjoyment of our guests.

For private family bicycle tours through Berlin, we recommend that groups do not exceed fifteen guests at a time. Larger groups will be divided up, with more guides allocated to the tour.

Finding your feet in a foreign city can be as daunting as it is thrilling. With each junction the option between something authentic and undiscovered, and, well, a wrong turn.

I’m here to share my expert knowledge of Berlin with you; the sights, the stories, and the secrets of the city that only reveal themselves either by chance or following years of dedicated pursuit.

All packed into one incredible trip – a Berlin Highlights tour that covers almost 1,000 years of history of the German capital – a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

Berlin Experiences - Best of Berlin Tour - Brandenburg Gate

Certainly, it was far from evident from its humble beginnings – as a minor fishing village settled in an unforgiving backwater – that Berlin was destined for the world stage. The catastrophic events of the 20th century that have come to be so closely associated with the peaceful present-day German capital seem unbelievably distant from its time as part of the remote ‘Sandbox of the Holy Roman Empire’.

However, to remove Berlin now from the European story would leave many questions unanswerable; eras have begun and ended here; events served as catalysts to the great turning points in history.

Germany’s doomed involvement in the First World War; the city’s status as the nerve centre of Hitler’s Third Reich; Berlin carved up and occupied on the frontline of the Cold War conflict; the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall; and the reunification of Germany with Berlin as the country’s capital.

Within the six hours of this Berlin History tour, you will discover the city’s major and many minor sights – focusing on the central historic Mitte district and the five grand squares – the Lustgarten, Bebelplatz, Gendarmenmarkt, Wilhelmplatz & Pariser Platz – that dominate the area.

Not only will you leave well-versed in the facts & figures of Berlin’s fascinating past but also confident and capable of further exploring the city’s present.
