germany tourist visa from abu dhabi

Germany is a beautiful European country that has attracted several visitors and tourists due to its rich cultural history, diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and cultural diversity. From world-class museums to bustling markets and fairytale castles to scenic countryside, Germany beckons people with its charm, elegance, hospitality, and myriad experiences that cater to every global traveler's taste and requirements. If a German visit is in your travel plans anytime soon for leisure, tourism, business, study, or work, understanding the German visa requirements and application process is essential. This article provides a comprehensive guide to German visas, including the several types of visas, the requirements for each visa category, the application process, and the key information to help you clear your visa application process smoothly without any hassles.

What is a German visa?

A German visa is an official travel document issued to foreign nationals for entering and staying in Germany for a specific period. Germany is part of the Schengen region, meaning a Schengen visa would be sufficient for most visitors. The visa issued to foreign nationals grants permission for them to travel, engage in leisure and tourism activities, visit family or friends, attend business meetings, attend conferences, and participate in or attend cultural and educational activities. A visa can be a short-term or long-term visa, depending on your purpose and duration of stay. An approved visa does not automatically entitle your entry into Germany. Your entry is still at the discretion of the German immigration officials at the point of entry. A comprehensive process is laid down by the German immigration authorities for obtaining a German visa.

Types of German visas

Germany offers several visa categories that are defined and issued based on the duration and purpose of the applicant’s stay. Therefore, the key considerations and application process, along with the supporting documents to be submitted, may depend on the visa category you have applied for and the travel purpose and duration. The most common types of visas issued include:

A short-term visa granting permission to enter and stay in Germany for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for leisure & tourism, business, medical treatment, or family reunification. Nationals from the European Union (EU), the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and other countries do not need a German visa for entry or a brief stay.

This is a long-term visa issued to foreign nationals for stays exceeding 90 days for work, study, family reunification, or joining your German spouse.

A long-term visa issued to foreign nationals who have enrolled in educational programs in Germany.

This is a long-term visa issued to foreign nationals planning to work in Germany, either on a temporary or long-term basis.

A short-term visa issued to foreign nationals for attending meetings, conferences, events, or engaging in any business-related activities in Germany.

This is a short-term visa issued to foreign nationals passing through Germany en route to another country or destination.

Visa requirements

You must fulfill specific requirements laid down by the German authorities to obtain a German visa. While the requirements may be different depending on your visa category, nationality, and purpose of your stay. The common pre-requisites for a German visa include the following:

Your application must be duly signed and completed in all aspects. Empty, incomplete, or inaccurate fields within your visa application form can lead to a rejection of your Germany visa application form. In addition, depending on the visa type applied, you must provide supporting documents accordingly.

Your passport must have validity beyond six months from your intended stay in Germany. In addition, two blank pages are required for a visa stamp. Handwritten or physically damaged, or mutated passports are no longer accepted.

You should submit two recent visa-size photographs that have been captured against a white background within the last three months and have at least 80% or more face coverage.

You should have valid travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of Euros 30,000 that is valid during your intended stay in Germany. The travel health insurance must be issued from a valid travel insurance agency and covers all medical aid, expenses, emergency medical treatment, and repatriation during your intended stay.

A detailed round trip flight itinerary or travel reservations, proof of accommodation in Germany, purpose & duration of stay, and other relevant details that will form a cover letter for your visa application. You should additionally share an invitation letter from your friends or relatives if you intend to stay with them.

Proof or validation of sufficient financial means to cover your basic expenses in Germany during your intended stay. This could be through your six-month bank statement, sponsorship letter, or any other document that will help prove your financial capability to cover your expenses.

Proof of paid visa or consulate fees must be submitted as part of your visa application process.

Additional documents can be requested validating your travel purpose. If you are visiting for tourism, include a detailed travel plan or travel agency bookings. If your purpose of travel is business, then an invitation letter from a German company would serve the purpose.

Submit supporting documents highlighting your employment statuses, such as appointment or transfer letters, business registration, pay stubs, or enrolment letter from a German educational institute in case of students.

Your travel history for any international travel should be submitted with documents like previous visa stamps or previous visas in your passport.

Additional documents

Depending on the visa category type applied and specific to your purpose of visit, you would be requested to submit additional supporting documentation such as an invitation letter, admission or enrolment letter, and employment contract.

The above are general guidelines, and any additional documents may be requested from the applicant depending on the individual circumstances of each applicant. Always update yourself with the latest travel and visa guidelines on the German embassy or consulate website in your country of residence.

Germany visa application process

The pre-requisites or general process involved in a German visa revolves around the following steps:

  • Determine and finalize the type of visa you want to apply for depending on your purpose of visit
  • Gather the required supporting documents for supporting your visa application form.
  • Complete the Germany visa application form accurately and completely in a paper format or online
  • Schedule an appointment at the German consulate or embassy in your residing country.
  • Attend the appointment in person and submit your visa application along with supporting documents and your biometric data, which includes your digital photograph and fingerprints.
  • Pay the non-refundable visa consulate fees.
  • Track your visa application through the German embassy or consulate's online system.
  • For all approved visas, the applicants will receive a communication to collect their passport with the visa stamp either in person or online through email.

The processing time for a German visa varies due to several factors, such as the embassy or consulate you have applied to, the time of the year, the type of visa, nationality, and the purpose of travel. Generally, a German visa is issued in a few days to several weeks from the date of submission of your visa application form. Therefore, it is advisable to plan your visa application process well in advance to provide sufficient time for processing and adjusting any potential delays due to the travel calendar.

As Germany is part of the Schengen member states, any European Union (EU) member state, the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries can enjoy visa-free entry and stay for up to 90 days within 180 days. However, we recommend you verify the specific visa requirements depending on your nationality, as several exceptions could also apply.

If you are extending your Germany stay beyond the permitted visa duration, you should apply for an extension at the local immigration office well before your visa expires. Submitting the extension application well in time is essential, as overstaying can lead to penalties, deportation, and complications for future visa applications.

A residence permit will be crucial for individuals intending to stay in Germany for an extended period. This is for work, family reunification, study, or joining a German spouse. The requirements for a residence permit would vary from a visa application process. Consult your local immigration office or German embassy, or consulate for updated travel guidelines issued.

The German visa process requires astute planning, preparation, adherence to the document and process, and timely submission. If you are too held up or stressed with the above process, consult a dependable travel partner who can partner with you for the entire process. Planning and allowing sufficient time for processing your visa application is essential to ensure a smooth and successful German travel experience.

The Abu Dhabi Tourist Visa Explained – Rule Changes in 2022

On this page, we detail everything you need to know about tourist visas for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Note that these visa rules apply no matter which Emirate you come in and out of.

We have updated this page following changes to the visa system in October 2022.

We have attempted to provide clear and accurate information; however, at the time of writing, some aspects of the new Visa system are not entirely clear during this transition period. This page will be amended as soon as more official information becomes available.

In addition to requiring a visa to enter the country as a tourist, please keep abreast of current COVID-19 requirements . As of 7 November, 2022, the Al Hosn “Green Pass” requirement was abolished .

Who needs to apply for a Tourist Visa?

Anyone not a GCC national or eligible for a visa on arrival (see list below) must apply for a visa in advance to visit the UAE.

You can apply either through your airline or UAE-registered tour operator for the appropriate visa.

  • Visa services from Etihad Airways
  • Visa Services offered by Emirates Airline
  • Visa services from Fly Dubai
  • Visa services from Air Arabia

A single entry transit visa for less than 48 hours is free, whilst of 4-day short-stay, visa costs 50AED.

A 30-day, single-entry visa costs in the region of 350 AED, depending on the service that you use to obtain it. Alternatively, a 60-day single-entry visa costs in the region of 650 AED. Both 30 and 60-day single-entry visit visas can be extended for a further 30 days for a fee of 960 AED.

Note that people under the age of 18 cannot apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

Visa-Free Entry to the UAE

Citizens from  GCC Countries   do not need to apply for a visa on arrival to the UAE.

Countries eligible for Visa on Arrival

Upon landing at Abu Dhabi International Airport, simply make your way to immigration, where your visa will be issued.

These countries are currently eligible for a FREE visit visa on arrival to the UAE:

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • People’s Republic of China
  • Republic of El Salvador
  • Republic of Mauritius
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America
  • Vatican City

A visit visa for most of these countries lasts for 60 days and can be renewed for another 30 days twice. If you overstay a visit visa, the fine is 200 AED for the first day and 100 AED per day after that – see more below on overstays.

There is a 10-day grace period (this means that you won’t be fined for overstaying your visa until Day 70).

Note that the 26 countries in the Schengen Zone had previously been allowed to stay in the UAE for 90 days, although it is unclear whether this is still the case following the immigration reforms of October 2022.

Five-Year Multi-Visit Visa (New in 2022)

A five-year multi-visit visa is also available for the above countries, which allows the holder to stay in the UAE for up to 90 days in a row and up to 180 days per year.

In order to apply for this type of visa, you need to prove that you have USD 4,000 in your bank account (for at least six months prior to the visa application) and purchase UAE Health Insurance.

Citizens of India

There are specific rules applicable to Indian citizens,  which you can find here .

If you have any concerns, you should verify this information on the UAE Government website.

What happens if my tourist Visa has expired?

If your 60-day tourist visa to the UAE has expired, you have two options:

  • Qasr Al Watan Dress Code: What To Wear To The UAE Presidential Palace
  • What to Wear in Abu Dhabi: Demystifying The Abu Dhabi Dress Code
  • Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque Dress Code & Etiquette Guide 2024
  • Leave the country before your 10-day grace period expires (ie, by day 69)
  • Apply to Immigration and pay a fee to have your visit visa extended. It is currently understood that you are able to extend your 60-day visa by 30 days twice, giving you a maximum of 120 days in the UAE ( previously, you could keep renewing indefinitely by leaving the country and returning).

What is a Visa Run?

A Visa run is a common expression used for when you leave the country in order to re-enter and start a fresh visit visa immediately.

Most commonly, this is done on the UAE’s border with Oman as it is quite straightforward and inexpensive to cross by land, provided you have access to a car. We have a detailed guide on how the process works on our Dubai Travel Planner site . It is identical for Abu Dhabi, although there may be closer border crossing points to consider near Al Ain.

There is no need to do a visa run as visas can easily be renewed online, but it is still an option which helps combine costs with a trip to a neighbouring country.

Accidental overstays

It’s important to note if you leave the country during the first 60 days, your UAE Visa on Arrival will not renew upon re-entry. It’s a 60-day multi-entry Visa .  If you are travelling through Abu Dhabi, let’s say onward to Europe, then have a stopover in Abu Dhabi again, be very careful if that second stop sees you cross over from 60 days to 70 days.

Eg: You arrive in Abu Dhabi on 1 September, stay for a few days, and then fly on to Europe. You return to the UAE on 30 October.  You then spend two weeks in Abu Dhabi and fly out again on 12 November.

Even though you only stayed in the UAE for just over two weeks, your original 60-day visa was still valid on re-entry. You are considered to have overstayed your visit visa by 12 days as you did not leave the country, and it was not renewed during the 10-day grace period.

Road trip to Oman?

A good way to avoid this can be to include a trip to Oman with your Abu Dhabi trip!  Musandam is our favourite location for an overnight trip, although the closest crossing point from Abu Dhabi city is Al Ain; not only an amazing experience, but you can avoid any issues with overstaying your visa and receiving a fine by exiting the country between day 60 and day 69.

There are a few small costs involved, and depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for an e-visa in advance. Other than transportation, you have to pay an exit fee to the UAE, and a  tourist Visa entry fee to Oman, currently 5OR for a 10-day visit visa.

Re-entering the UAE, there are no charges on the Omani or UAE side, just stamping of your passports.

If you are travelling in a hire car, you will need to check that your insurance covers Oman and obtain a ’no objection certificate (NOC)’.

NB If you are looking to work in the UAE and become a resident, different visa categories will apply.  You may still be instructed by a future employer to enter on a tourist visa; then you will be changed across to the appropriate visa category in due course.

German Visa from Dubai

The Visa Services company is the prime provider of German tourist visas. Our expertise ensures a smooth visa application process, so with us, your German dream is just an application away.

Amidst the diverse and historically rich countries of the Schengen region, Germany stands out as a prime destination. From the fairy tale castles of Bavaria, and the picturesque Black Forest regions, to the vibrant metropolises like Berlin, Germany offers a blend of modernity and tradition, technology and nature.

Germany’s appeal as a tourist destination has been undeniable over the past years. From 2016 to 2019, Germany witnessed a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.4% in terms of international overnight stays.

There are several factors that have played into this consistent rise. Germany’s rich history, diverse culture, and world-renowned festivals (like Oktoberfest) have been key attractions. Moreover, its central location in Europe makes it a strategic travel hub, further boosting its appeal.

Understanding German Visa Requirements from Dubai

We specialize in assisting our clients with acquiring a German Schengen visa. This visa permits a stay of up to 90 days within any given 180-day period.

The validity length of a Schengen visa to Germany isn’t uniform and can vary based on several factors, and the decision fully depends on the decision of the visa officer processing the request in the Embassy or Consulate:

  • Purpose of Visit: Tourism, business, attending events, or visiting relatives.
  • Frequency of Visits: Single, double, multiple entry.
  • Travel Insurance Coverage: It’s essential to ensure that your travel insurance covers the entire duration of your stay.
  • Individual Assessment: The issuing consulate evaluates the visa application and decides on the validity based on the applicant’s situation, purpose of visit, and previous travel history.
  • Maximum Duration: Even if granted for multiple entries, the typical Schengen visa allows travellers to stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.
  • National Visas: For longer durations, such as work or study, a national visa specific to the Schengen country of interest might be necessary. This visa differs from the typical short-stay Schengen visa.

German Tourist Visa Requirements

To ensure a smooth application process for your visa to Germany, applicants must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • UAE Residency: The applicant must be a resident of the UAE.
  • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen area.
  • UAE Residence Visa: Same as your passport, your UAE residence visa should also be valid for a minimum of 3 months after your planned departure date from the Schengen territory.

Documents to apply for a German visa from the UAE:

  • Residence visa
  • Previous Schengen visa copy (if available)
  • 2 photos with white background 3.5×4.5 cm (not older than 6 months)
  • Travel insurance
  • NOC letter from the employer with salary, position, and contract length information. If you are an owner of a company – a copy of the company trade licence
