Are Media Unveils Sponsors For Its Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards

gourmet traveller awards 2024

Gourmet Traveller today announced the marquee sponsors of its annual Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards.

Presenting sponsors are fine dining waters S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. Supporting partners include Glenlivet, PorkStar, Ilve and Fhiaba, Mountain Culture Beer Co. and Hungerford Hill. Glenlivet will sponsor Outstanding Contribution to Hospitality , PorkStar sponsors Chef of the Year , while B est New Restaurant is sponsored by Ilve and Fhiaba. Beer and wine partners are NSW craft brewery Mountain Culture Beer Co. and Hunter Valley winery Hungerford Hill.

The prestigious awards, which recognise the nation’s top culinary offerings, will be revealed at a gala event on August 21 at Brasserie 1930 at Sydney’s newest five-star hotel, Capella Sydney. This year, a new award has been introduced, the Readers’ Choice Icon Award, proudly supported by the Gourmet Traveller Gift Card . The award aims to celebrate the restaurants that are icons of Australia’s dining landscape, as voted by Gourmet Traveller readers. Voting for the Icon Award will open from June 26 to July 14 via the Gourmet Traveller website, with a shortlist of finalists compiled from reader suggestions.

All entrants will have the chance to win one of five $200 Gourmet Traveller gift cards for casting their vote. Finalists will be revealed in the August edition of Gourmet Traveller, on-sale July 31, while the full list of winners, along with the annual Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide will be featured in the September edition, on-sale August 28. Commenting on this year’s sponsors, Are Media, director of sales, Andrew Cook, said he was thrilled to have continued support from the nation’s dining industry.

“ Gourmet Traveller is the trusted source and authority for the best in food, wine and travel, offering unique content, escapism and exclusive access to enrich, entertain and inspire their audience” he said. “The Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards are the pinnacle of national restaurant awards for Australia’s dining scene. I want to extend my sincere thanks to all our partners S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, and supporting partners, Glenlivet, PorkStar, Ilve, Fhiaba, Mountain Culture Beer Co. and Hungerford Hill for assisting us in continuing the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards ’ legacy.”

Last year, South Australia’s Restaurant Botanic took out the Restaurant of the Year award, while Double Bay diner Margaret, owned by chef Neil Perry, was named both Best New Restaurant and the NSW state winner of Restaurant of the Year . Gourmet Traveller , editor, Joanna Hunkin, said the awards continued to be a critical benchmark for dining across the country.

“ The Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards recognise the incredible depth and diversity of Australia’s dining landscape and are always a highlight of the hospitality calendar,” she said.

“This year, we are delighted to bring back a readers’ choice component to the awards, drawing on the legacy of the original Restaurant of the Year competition. Gourmet Traveller named its first Restaurant of the Year in 1980, calling on readers to submit votes for the best restaurant in their state.

“As the awards grew, a more representative and diverse system was introduced, drawing on the expertise of a panel of professional food writers. We wanted to bring back an element of readers’ choice this year, as Australians continue to demonstrate a passion for great food and fine dining. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate some of the country’s long-standing culinary icons, who have helped shape the nation’s palate.”

The awards are set to be presented in several categories, including the coveted Restaurant of the Year, along with Chef of the Year, Best New Restaurant, Best New Talent, Best Destination Dining, Wine Bar of the Year, Restaurant Personality of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to Hospitality.

Victoria shines in the 2024 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards nominations

Best New Restaurant nominee, Serai.

Serai's kare kare hasbrowns (image: Jana Langhorst).

Two pasta bars – one devoutly traditional, one prescriptively not – a woodfired Filipino game-changer, a 40-year study in Cantonese finesse, two destination degustations, a wine bar’s wine bar and one heck of a flagship fine diner. These are the Victorian restaurants vying for a gong at  Gourmet Traveller ’s annual restaurant awards, one of the most prestigious nights on the Australian dining awards calendar.

Ross Magnaye’s Filipino sensation  Serai  headlines the Best New Restaurant nominees, a sharp combination of bright, woodfired flavours and vins naturels earning it a nod alongside Fitzroy-via-Piedmont pasta hideaway Alta Trattoria.

Alt Pasta Bar’s Mino Han will contest the Best New Talent category, after opening earlier this year with a menu that  Gourmet Traveller ’s Michael Harden praised equally for the execution of the classics as the ingenuity that it’s named for, Alt being short for alternative. Case in point, a spinach pappardelle tossed with nori butter, salmon roe, soy sauce, sesame oil, and “superb little discs of perfectly cooked abalone”.

Hit Richmond wine bar Clover Dining is up for Best New Wine Bar in a hot field that includes the likes of Adelaide’s Good Gilbert and Perth bolter Lalla Rookh, while Derek Boath’s picture-perfect menu at Underbar in Ballarat has it in contention for Best Destination Dining.

Elsewhere, Lake House’s Robin Wilson is in the running for Restaurant Personality of the Year, while Melbourne landmarks Stokehouse and Flower Drum are both nominated for the Readers’ Choice Icon Award in a field that also takes in  Birregurra treasure Brae .

The  Gourmet Traveller  Restaurant Awards take place at Brasserie 1930 on Monday 21 August, with the full list of winners to be published in the September issue of the magazine.

Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards names Onzieme Canberra's best for 2024

Karen Hardy

When Louis Couttoupes opened Onzieme in late 2021 he had this idea of creating a little bistro-like local where he could change the menu daily, take plenty of walk-ins, serve good food and make everyone feel at home.

He succeeded and now the Kingston restaurant has been named as the ACT's top restaurant in the 2024 Gourmet Traveller annual awards.

Onzieme was nominated for best new restaurant in the 2023 awards and the judging panel of Australia's longest-running restaurant awards had been keeping a close eye on the venue ever since.

"Nothing appears to work too hard in this handsome 30-seater," the citation read.

"Not the pendant lights, bentwood chairs or trim list of low-intervention wines.

"Yet, it becomes clear pretty quickly just how much padding goes on beneath Onzieme's relaxed surface.

"Chef-owner Louis Couttoupes changes his menu daily, coaxing huge flavours from hyper-local produce at its seasonal peak.

"That same passion for provenance isn't lost on the crack young floor team, who know their cues, and help steer the flexible dining format with generosity and warmth.

"Consider it the platonic ideal of the neighbourhood neo-bistro."

Onzieme takes the mantle of the top spot off Pilot, which had been the Gourmet Traveller ACT No.1 for the past two years.

The Pilot team's new venue, Such and Such, was nominated for best new restaurant, but lost out to Melbourne's Serai. Pilot/Such and Such co-owner Dash Rumble was nominated for restaurant personality of the year, but lost out to Louise Radman, from Hobart's Institut Polaire.

Restaurant of the year went to Agnes in Brisbane, where chef Ben Williamson rules supreme over the multiple fire pits with an equal eye on the menu and service.

National chef of the year was won by Hugh Allen from Melbourne's Vue de Monde. Not yet 30, Allen has been responsible for a revamp of the iconic Melbourne restaurant, with another facelift in the wings.

The new readers' choice icon award, as voted by readers, was awarded to Brae, chef Dan Hunter's paddock-to-plate fine diner from a remote patch of beautiful countryside in Birregurra, Victoria.

Other state winners included Aalia (Sydney); Agnes (Brisbane); Restaurant Botanic (Adelaide); Peppina (Hobart); Etta (Melbourne); and Millbrook (Jarrahdale, WA).

At the awards dinner at Brasserie 1930, inside Sydney's new Capella venue, Sean Moran from Sean's Panorama in Bondi - now known simply as "Sean's" - received a standing ovation as he was honoured with this year's outstanding contribution to hospitality. The industry veteran will celebrate 30 years of his iconic Bondi restaurant this year, which first introduced the harbour city to farm-to-table dining in 1993.

WA Restaurant of the Year, Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide 2024

WA Restaurant of the Year, Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide 2024

We are over the moon to announce that Millbrook Winery Restaurant has been awarded WA Restaurant of the Year in the 2024 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide –  for the second time no less!

Previously, our Restaurant was also crowned WA Restaurant of the Year in the 2022 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide.

This win highlights the incredible work that the team do, as they continue to push culinary boundaries, producing epic, award-winning food, all  while staying true to the Millbrook ethos of farm-to-table. Led by Executive Chef Guy Jeffreys and Head Chef Justin Wong, the team solely relies on the Estate's orchard and one acre garden to source all the Restaurant's fruit and vegetables. Cultivated by Head Gardener Mitchell Seward, the seasonal produce inspires the ever-changing menu and is championed alongside locally sourced meat and fish.

Showcasing the diversity of fine dining across Australia, the annual Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide celebrates the most exciting and exceptional dining experiences to be found for the upcoming year:

" Lunch at Millbrook is saddled with considerable expectations, which only seem to build as you make the hour-long drive to this seachanger's fantasy in the Perth Hills. Thankfully, the team is up to the task, from the cellar-door crew that bid you welcome to the cheery waitstaff that patrol the cosy upstairs dining room. The kitchen is also in on the act, highlighting ingredients grown in the property's sprawling garden."

"Italy is a key influence; scallops get flash-cured in acqua-pazza-like fermented tomato water, while blistered porchetta slices share plate space with braised Calabrian white beans. A delicious frugality is also in effect. Foraged weeds are immortalised in a flaky spanakopita just as windswept mandarins become meringue-crowned curd. Snappy estate wines, like the buy-in, are priced so all can play, although beer side projects are becoming more regular on the drinks list. A lunch (and day trip) to be savoured."

A huge shoutout is also due to the wonderful front of house team, led by Restaurant Supervisor Deb Nicholson, who ensure that every Millbrook experience is as amazing as ever.

A number of other highly esteemed restaurants across the country were awarded Top Restaurant for their State, and we are very proud to be considered at the very top, alongside these incredible venues. Not only that, but for our Restaurant to be featured so highly for the second time is a feat not lost on us, and we are overjoyed at this recognition on such a prestigious national platform.

Speaking on the award, Executive Chef Guy Jeffreys said: " Gourmet Traveller is the one everyone wants to win. To take it out again, but with a completely new team, is very humbling and consolidates our mission statement to not buy fruit or vegetables."

Millbrook Head Chef Justin Wong

Justin Wong  joined Millbrook Winery as Head Chef in June 2022 and he has been integral in achieving the latest WA Restaurant of the Year win.

Justin  started in the industry in 2009 washing dishes as a part-time job whilst studying at university. Realising he was probably more useful with a knife than a pen, Justin began cooking seriously under the tutelage of Kurt Sampson at both Pata Negra and Propeller. Since then, he has worked at other esteemed venues in Perth such as Lulu La Delizia and Shadow Wine Bar, before taking on his own kitchens at both Tiny’s and Vinotto.

Justin is incredibly passionate about creating dishes from the produce grown on the property’s garden and 90-year-old orchard, as well as making the most of the strong relationships already forged with local artisans. He relishes the challenge of changing the menu not based on trends, but on what the garden gives.

Justin celebrated at the awards dinner in Sydney last night. Reflecting on this epic win, he said: " On behalf of the entire team at Millbrook Winery, we are incredibly humbled to receive this award. It is a massive recognition for doing the things we do, and the overall ambition of our ethos. Thank you to Gourmet Traveller and all their sponsors. Onwards and upwards we continue!"

The full results will be published in the Gourmet Traveller magazine, which is published on Monday 28 August.

CELEBRATING THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST IN AUSTRALIAN DINING THIS YEAR

Australia’s leading luxury food title, Gourmet Traveller, last night unveiled the winners of the Gourmet Traveller 2023 Restaurant Awards at the hospitality event of the year. South Australia’s Restaurant Botanic has taken out the top honour at this year’s Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards, with chef Justin James accepting the award at a glittering gala event at Shell House in Sydney. “There’s no question that Restaurant Botanic is a bravura performance,” says Gourmet Traveller editor Joanna Hunkin. “It combines fun and adventure with polish and poise. Chef Justin James doesn’t attempt perfection but rather embraces the beauty of irregularity and nature, making the most of the restaurant’s iconic location and using the garden’s bounty to create something uniquely of its place.” The country’s leading chefs and restaurant personalities came together to celebrate the annual awards, which are Australia’s longest-running restaurant awards and a highlight of the hospitality calendar. Neil Perry, Shannon Martinez, Ben Shewry, Brigitte Haffner, and Andrew McConnell were amongst the top chefs to attend the event, which marked the first time the awards have been announced in person, following more than two years of Covid restrictions and disruptions. It was a night of double celebration for Perry, whose Double Bay diner Margaret was named both Best New Restaurant and the NSW state winner of Restaurant of the Year. Tasmania claimed Best Destination Dining for Van Bone in Marion Bay, while Hobart’s Fico was named the state winner. In South Australia, Restaurant Botanic claimed both the state prize and was named Restaurant of the Year, while the creative duo behind Willunga wine bar Muni – Mug Chen and Chia Wu – were named Best New Talent. From Victoria, Thi Le was voted Chef of the Year in the night’s only peer-voted category, while Shannon Martinez was named Restaurant Personality of Year. Despite what some millennials think, the word iconic is not simply a synonym for good or great. In the world of hospitality, an icon is someone or somewhere that has stood the test of time, delivering a consistent and excellent experience, time and time again. You may not know what’s on the menu, but you know it will be sensational. In this issue, we celebrate the people, places and flavours that have achieved that unique status.…

Europeans have a friendly rivalry about how much more they love the potato than their neighbours. Whether it’s British chips, French pommes frites, Low Countries’ frieten, or Spanish patatas bravas, every nationality thinks their recipe for fried potatoes is the best. It seems everyone wants to claim the iconic spud as their own, and define their cuisine by it. The domesticated potato originated on the border of Peru and Bolivia, some five to ten thousand years ago. Potato plants are tetraploid, meaning they carry four sets of chromosomes (as opposed to our two). This makes it very adaptable to different growing conditions. The potato was able to be grown in the tropical inland valleys as well as the subalpine grasslands of its Peruvian heartland. By the 15th century, the potato…

A woman exits JPMorgan Chase headquarters on Park Avenue in New York,

Former JP Morgan analyst awarded $35m after glass door shatters on her

Meghan Brown, 36, received the payout after a 7.5ft-tall lobby door exploded on her head, causing permanent brain damage

A former analyst with banking giant JP Morgan has been awarded $35m after a glass door shattered on her head in New York City, causing her permanent brain damage.

A jury awarded 36-year-old Meghan Brown the payout after a 7.5ft-tall lobby door in midtown Manhattan exploded over her head as she was leaving a physical therapy appointment in 2015, the New York Post first reported on Monday.

Describing the incident in the Manhattan supreme court, Brown said: “I do remember seeing glass … everywhere in the lobby near me,” the Post reported, adding that Brown said she recalls “being inside and I was on the floor” as people came forward to help.

Following the incident at 271 Madison Avenue, Brown took time off for a year before returning to her job at JP Morgan, but her career gradually declined and she lost her job in 2021.

Brown’s attorney, Tom Moore, told the Post: “Eventually she was let go permanently and has not worked in that type of investment banking since … She keeps trying but just can’t perform.” Brown went on to work for a cryptocurrency company but was also fired, and now runs a gourmet ice cream business in Florida.

As a result of the door incident, Brown said she has suffered from a slew of problems including losing her sense of smell and taste, and forgetting Spanish, which she told the jury she once spoke fluently, the New York Post reports.

Other problems Brown said she experiences include PTSD, decline in memory, focus and vocabulary, sensitivity to light, permanent headaches, neck pain, distorted depth perception, vertigo and balance issues.

In addition to seeking various specialists to address her issues, Brown said she got a service dog to help prevent her from falling over.

Brown also said her brain injury affected her engagement to a man who told her he was unable to have a “normal life” with her, the New York Post reports.

In response to Brown, an attorney for the building’s owners said that the glass, which shattered into tiny pieces instead of falling as a single pane, broke the way it was supposed to and the only injury Brown had was a cut on her hand.

after newsletter promotion

Nevertheless, a six-person jury unanimously ruled in favor of Brown and said that the building owner’s negligence was “a substantial factor in causing” her injuries, the New York Post reports, citing a jury verdict sheet.

Brown was awarded $35,184,208 in damages.

Benjamin Zipursky, a Fordham University law professor and tort law expert, said: “A typical component of an injured person’s damages award is what is their lost income … And when people have brain damage, the medical care for that can be very large because medical costs are so high.”

“The suffering that people can experience when their life has dramatically turned around and they have traumatic injury is also something for … the jury [to] decide what the fair compensation would be, so all of that plays into this,” he added.
