Day 1 – Tarangire National Park

Your Safari Tanzania and Zanzibar package starts today with the Tarangire National Park , about a 2 hour drive from the tourist capital Arusha. Tarangire Park is named after the Tarangire River, which is the park’s lifeblood. The Tarangire National Park is home to Africa’s largest population of elephants and the second-largest population of lions. Baobab trees are plentiful throughout the park and can easily be spotted because of their distinctive silhouettes against the blue sky. In the evening we will drive to Africa Safari Lake Manyara where you overnight in a furnished comfort tent with private bathroom. You can take a dive into the swimming pool and enjoy a sun-downer drink at the bar.

Day 2 – Lake Manyara National Park

At 325 square kilometers, Manyara National Park is certainly small by Tanzanian standards, but don’t let that put you off. It is, quite simply, amazing. Bordered by the dramatic Rift Valley, the rest of the park is a pretty medley of grassy floodplains, enchanting evergreen forest, acacia woodland and twinkling groundwater springs. And of course Lake Manyara itself, a glittering and iridescent alkaline pool that expands and contracts with the seasons. Here you can find a big population of flamingo. Late afternoon you drive back to Africa Safari Lake Manyara where you spend the night in your spacious comfort en-suite tent again.

Day 3 – Serengeti National Park

On day three we will head towards the Serengeti National Park . After a few hour drive we will be greeted by the Serengeti, one of the most iconic African wildlife reserves. The Serengeti is home to many different types of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalos and more. On our Safari through the park we’ll stop to watch some of the animals at their natural habitats. We’ll learn about their lifestyles as well as the threats they face in their habitats. Toward the evening we arrive at Africa Safari Serengeti Ikoma where you over night in a fully furnished comfort tent with private bathroom.

Day 4 – Ikoma Wildlife Management Area

The next day we will start the day with a game drive in the Ikoma Wildlife Management Area . This area supports a variety of wildlife across 242 square kilometres of pristine wilderness including herds of elephant, waterbuck, Black and White colobus monkeys, shy leopard and both the Greater and the Lesser Kudu. In the afternoon we will explore the area by foot with a ranger (walking Safari) and you can ask questions about the park’s wildlife, plants and geology. You will learn about the local people living so close to the border of the Serengeti. A truly unique experience! You spend another night camping at Africa Safari Serengeti Ikoma.

Day 5 – Serengeti National Park

Today we go on another game drive in the Serengeti – home to every member of the Big Five. You can ask your guide what you want to discover, every piece of the Serengeti offers something unique. Whether it’s spying on wild dog, watching rhino amble through the brush near Kopjes or losing your breath at the sight of big cats chasing down their prey. At the end of the day we head to Ndutu/South Serengeti where we overnight at Africa Safari South Serengeti . The area is famous for the calving season of the Great Migration, an absolute highlight of the annual wildebeest migration.

Day 6 – Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will proceed to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive with a picnic lunch. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cavernous bowl-shaped crater is in fact a caldera, formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself. Today, this ‘flat pan’ is covered with grasses and home to an unprecedented number animals including the black rhino, lions, magnificent elephants and smaller game. Due to the elevation of the Ngorongoro area it enjoys more rain throughout the year so most of the animals don’t need to migrate. With a bit of luck the ‘Big Five’ can be spotted during one game drive only. After this exciting game drive we return back to Arusha where you overnight at the Africa Safari Arusha Lodge .

Day 7 – Stone Town / Shaba Boutique Hotel

After breakfast your driver brings you to the small Arusha airport. From this domestic aerodrome you will fly for about 80 minutes to Zanzibar. When you arrive our local staff will pick you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel. The first night you stay at Shaba Boutique Hotel which is located in a beautiful and characteristic building in the heart of the old centre of Stone Town. In the afternoon and/or the next morning you can explore Stone Town. Walk through the narrow streets and capture the feeling of the old colonial Arabic Architecture. You can visit former slave market, the Anglican Cathedral, the House of Wonders or the old Arab fort.

Day 8 to 11 – Southeast Zanzibar / Reef & Beach Resort

The next day we will bring you to the beautiful Reef & Beach Resort which is located on the Southeastern coast of Zanzibar. Reef & Beach resort is a spacious holiday complex by the sea with over 600 metres of sea front. The beaches are pristine and the ocean is clear blue. It’s closely located to the reef and there is always a fresh breeze from the Indian Ocean, where you will be surrounded by the best service possible, in perfect harmony with nature. You can enjoy three nights at this beautiful resort on an all-inclusive basis. Day 11 marks the end of this Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday Package and we will bring you back to Zanzibar airport for your departure flight.

Zanzibar has a tropical climate allowing you to plan your seaside vacation in this part of Eastern Africa at any time of the year without any extreme variability in temperatures. The monsoon breezes blowing in from the Indian Ocean help to maintain its warm temperatures.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

There are two best times to scuba dive off the coast of Zanzibar, in July and August and in February and March. Diving off the north coast is particularly good from June to October and off the south coast between November and March .

Zanzibar Island has two wet seasons, the long rains and the short rains. The long rains in Zanzibar begin in the month of March and pick up the tempo in April and May, dusting off by June while the short rains fall in the months of November and December . We don’t recommend visiting Zanzibar during the rainy seasons.

Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main tropical island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar.

Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island and oldest part of Zanzibar City. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it is known for its rich cultural heritage of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements. An incredible mashup of winding alleys and old Arabic-style buildings, you can temporarily lose yourself in the town’s magic. Soak up the local culture by sipping a cup of coffee from a local vendor or wander through the streets, discovering unique little spots at every turn.

Palace Museum

Commonly known as the Sultan’s Palace, The Palace Museum is perhaps the most historic building in Stone Town and is a must-see for any traveler. The Palace Museum is located in the waterfront, overlooking the ocean, and was built in the 19th century as a home for the Sultan and his family. After the 1964 revolution, the site was used as a Government building and was renamed as The People’s Palace. Today it serves as a museum that showcases relics of the past Sultan family.

House of Wonders

The House of Wonders is a hugely important and visually stunning historic building in Stone Town. The House of Wonders rises in impressive tiers of slender steel pillars and balconies overlooking the waterfront. Its enormous carved doors are said to be the largest in East Africa, fronted by two bronze cannon with Portuguese inscriptions dating them to the 16th century. It boasts a highly interesting exhibition that offers a brilliant insight into Zanzibari and Swahili culture. The House of Wonders is the grandest and tallest building in all of Stone Town and is found in a prominent location in front of the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront.

The Old Fort

The oldest building in Stone Town, the Old Fort is located on the seafront, right in front of the famous Forodhani Gardens. Originally built in the 17th century with the purpose of defending the island from attacks from the Portuguese, nowadays the Old Fort is one of Stone Town’s main sights. Visitors can admire the remains of the former fort and amble around the courtyard in the center, where sellers have local produce for sale. An old amphitheater still hosts events and functions in the fort.

Prison Island

A half-hour boat trip from Zanzibar, Prison Island provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s slightly dark past – this land was once used as a place where slaves were detained and, when slavery was abolished, it functioned as a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent. Fortunately enough, that is all in the past and today the island is a nature reserve for giant tortoises and a place to see the ruins that once functioned as the prison.

Jozani Forest

A vast and scenic spread of green, Jozani is the last indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. Located inland from Chwaka Bay the area often floods, which luckily nurtures a unique swamp forest of many amazing looking trees and ferns. This forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red Colobus monkey and is also a great place to encounter many indigenous varieties of flora and fauna.The forest is best reached via bus (309 or 310), by chartered taxi, or as part of an organized tour.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is a village found on Zanzibar’s North West tip. This is a popular place yet it’s not overrun by tourists, and it’s one of Zanzibar's top beaches as the tide doesn’t head out too far. The aquarium on the north coast of Nungwi near the lighthouse, rears small turtles found on the beach until they are large enough and then released to survive in the sea. The aquarium is a natural pond with seawater that seeps through the cliff at high tide. This is a great destination for those looking to just soak up some sun and dip their toes in the sea but don’t need the luxury of a fancy hotel.

The name itself has captivated travellers imagination over the years and certainly lives up to expectations. Alongside the idyllic, crystal clear sea and vibrant reefs, excellent for diving, the island has a rich cultural and historical offering, particularly within the old Stone Town.

Further Insight On Zanzibar

Zanzibar is very combinable with a safari in East Africa and tends to be an ideal beach bolt on to safaris in Tanzania and Kenya.

Zanzibar holidays offer a real mix of accommodation choices with many of our favourites being the smaller boutique lodges offering a true Zanzibari experience. However, there are one or two resort-style hotels that offer a wider choice of activities and are often more suitable for families.

The archipelago’s turquoise seas are as stunning below as above the water line allowing for some magnificent diving. Manta rays, green turtles, hawksbill plus barracudas add to the array of colour with opportunities for wall dives nearer Pemba.

Zanzibar has seen a growth in visitor numbers in recent years but fortunately has remained relatively unspoiled or exploited. To really enjoy your time on the island it is important to find the right style and character of accommodation to suit you. Can you go on Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar?

Yes! It is possible to start (or finish) your Safari & Beach Tour in Zanzibar. There are several international airlines that fly to Zanzibar and this option can often reduce the need for internal connection flights. For example, you can fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO), go on safari, take an internal flight to Zanzibar and then fly home from Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ). Most guests prefer to finish the holiday in Zanzibar, but the choice is yours.

Which part of Zanzibar has the best beach?

Different coastlines in Zanzibar offer different things and should be considered when planning your trip.

The East coast of Zanzibar is lined with long stretches of powder-white beaches. Most beaches have a very shallow gradient and as a result, the tide goes out a long way, making it difficult to swim directly from the beach.

On the North Coast, ocean swimming is much less susceptible to the tides. Smooth beaches and white sand make for dazzling days in the sun. Here the beaches are much busier. There are a large number of guest houses, bars, shops and restaurants. The setting and the beaches are beautiful, but it lacks the tranquility of other parts of the island.

The South-West Coast has fewer places to stay and some of the island’s finest marine experiences. The South-West doesn’t have the iconic stretches of powder sand beaches, but visitor numbers are lower.

THE TOUR IN SHORT

The most striking thing about a safari in Tanzania is the sheer number and variety of animals you see. It’s almost impossible to imagine how many animals there are. As far as the eye can see, you can see the animals you recognise from the nature programmes on TV. This is where they live, and for the next 7 days, you’ll be visiting them.

On this tour, you’ll visit 4 of Tanzania’s iconic national parks, each with its own distinctive features.

Tarangire offers majestic baobab and acacia trees and large herds of elephants. The diverse wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater in a relatively small area takes most people’s breath away, while the opposite is almost the case with Serengeti. It’s impossible to imagine how big it is – and how many animals there are here. The safari ends at Lake Manyara, where you can enjoy the lush nature and profusion of birds.

You’ll mainly be staying in tent camps, so you’re as close to nature as possible, but you get to sleep in proper beds, and the tents have electricity and their own shower and toilet with running water.

Following an unforgettable safari experience, you head to the wonderful Zanzibar, where you can relax on the white sandy beaches, explore the historic Stone Town, savour the island’s spices and exotic fruits, take a boat trip in a traditional dhow or explore Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park.

Today is the day you set off from the selected airport and head to Tanzania with connecting flight(s) on the way.

You land at Kilimanjaro’s international airport. You might have been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Africa’s highest mountain from the air. Kilimanjaro towers a whopping 5.8 km from the savannah, and the snow-capped peak is in sharp contrast to the fact that you are now in Africa.

You will be met at the airport by our local guide. You will then set off on an exciting sightseeing drive to the small town of Karatu, where you will spend the night. The advantage of driving to Karatu today is that tomorrow, on your first safari in Tarangire National Park, you will have plenty of time to really experience the park, which is just 90 km from Karatu.

Sit back, enjoy the drive and soak in the African countryside. You’ll be in no doubt that that’s where you are. Small villages with markets, Masais with their herds of cattle and women in beautiful colourful dresses rush past the window.

A whole day of exciting safari experiences awaits you in Tarangire today.

Before that, though, we highly recommend that you get up early. Enjoy the fresh air and sight of the morning mist slowly lifting over the coffee fields.

After a hearty breakfast, you head to Tarangire National Park, which is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania.

The park is named after the Tarangire river, which flows through the park. In dry seasons, the river is the animals’ only source of water.

The landscape and vegetation are incredibly varied. The hilly landscape has nine different growth zones, and you experience a savannah filled with majestic baobab and acacia trees, almost taking all the attention away from the many animals.

The diverse vegetation attracts a great many wild animals. The park is particularly famous for its large number of elephants. Wildebeest and zebras are also found in large numbers, and kudu, impala and gazelles thrive here. The abundant prey here attracts lions, leopards and hyenas, and if you’re really lucky, you might also see a wild dog.

In the afternoon, you head back to Highview Hotel to relax.

You can certainly look forward to today’s drive!

From Karatu, you head through Ngorongoro’s hilly plateaus, where the red-robed Masai live in round huts, and their cattle graze between the zebras, wildebeest and giraffes of the savannah. Nevertheless, the Masai also live in the 21st century, and it is almost impossible not to smile when you see a Masai leaning against his shepherd’s crook while looking at his mobile phone.

Via Nabi Hill Gate, the route heads north-west across the endless plains of the Serengeti, where animals galore await you; millions of wildebeest and zebras, thousands of antelopes and buffaloes, hundreds of lions, elephants, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and thousands of birds. Serengeti offers one of the most amazing and unique wildlife and outdoor experiences on the planet.

Along the way, there is time to enjoy the packed lunch that you have with you.

You will spend the next two nights at Ikoma Wild Camp, which is located on the border of the north-western section of Serengeti National Park, offering a wonderful location and views over the Serengeti plain. You will be camping in the comfortable way, yet close to nature and the animals. The location outside the national park also allows for a number of unique experiences that you cannot get inside the national park itself.

If you wish to stay inside Serengeti National Park itself, you can opt to stay at Serengeti Wild Camp. You could also treat yourself to an upgrade to the gorgeous 4* Serengeti Safari Lodge with its pool and fabulous luxury tents. The view from the restaurant here is absolutely phenomenal!

Today, you’ll be going on a full-day safari in Serengeti to look for the “Big Five”: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes. You have a packed lunch with you and thus the whole day to enjoy the wildlife of the fantastic Serengeti.

The ecosystem here in the park is considered to be one of the oldest in the world, and it’s difficult not to feel both humbled and astonished when sitting in your Landcruiser, absorbing all that you see before you. Outside the drought period, you will also see a large number of Thomson’s gazelles, buffaloes, topi, Grant’s gazelles, eland antelopes, warthogs, eagles, ostriches, etc., in addition to the animals already mentioned. Today, you will probably also see and smell the hippos wallowing in the hippo pools.

A fantastic day, just waiting to be experienced and enjoyed!

If you wish to start the day with a memorable, out-of-the-ordinary experience, you can purchase a balloon safari at sunrise over the Serengeti. Watching the sun rise from the basket of the balloon is indescribable. The animals walk about and graze below you, and you can see contours of the landscape that you cannot see from the ground. Enjoy the silence that is broken only by the burner of the balloon – and perhaps a couple of impalas roaring beneath you.

To take part in a hot air balloon safari, you will need to stay at Serengeti Wild Camp rather than Ikoma Wild Camp.

In the Serengeti, you rise with the sun. After a hearty breakfast, you can look forward to yet another safari on the magnificent plains. Will today be the day that you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the timid leopard? And don’t forget to just enjoy the view and breathe in the fresh morning air. That’s the advantage of having plenty of time in Serengeti – there’s also time to enjoy the outstanding landscape.

At midday, you will enjoy the packed lunch you have with you in the open air. Afterwards, you head into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you visit the red-clad Masai at a local village and experience how life is lived in a Masai village and look at their handicraft, which is mainly bead work. They are keen to sell – and the jewellery is beautiful – but remember to “haggle”! Enjoy how the landscape has now changed from flat plains to hills with trees that the giraffes hide behind.

On school days – if you’re interested and time allows – it is also possible to visit a kindergarten/school in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area this afternoon. Today’s destination is Karatu with its scenic coffee fields. The hotel is a mere 20-minute drive from the gate into Ngorongoro, which means that you will be one of the first guests to arrive at the crater tomorrow. Although the crater is large, and there is a limit to the number of people that are allowed to visit it every day, it’s an advantage to get there early in the morning, while you’re still in with a chance of being one of the first to spot the animals.

• Ngorongoro Wild Camp

The Ngorongoro crater is the world’s largest inactive volcano crater. The volcano erupted some 2–3 million years ago and folded in on itself, leaving a gigantic hole, which is today home to 30,000 animals and 350 different species of birds, all of which have access to water all year round.

Once past the entrance to Ngorongoro, you pass through a lush area of rainforest before the descent along the inside of the crater begins. After an exciting drive down, you arrive at the 260 km 2 crater floor. The rim of the crater towers 600 metres above you. You might be at the bottom of the crater, but you are actually high up, because the rim of the crater is 2,200 metres above sea level.

The day is spent in the crater – and there is plenty to look at! Lions, gazelles, elephants, wildebeest and zebras in their droves. If you’re really lucky, you might see the endangered black rhinoceros, which is almost extinct in Africa due to poaching. In Ngorongoro, they are protected by the armed rangers.

Lunch is enjoyed in stunning surroundings on the floor of the crater, and at the end of the day you will be driven back to your hotel, where you can relax by the pool, purchase a massage or perhaps visit the local market one last time.

After breakfast and check-out from the hotel, you head to Lake Manyara National Park. Extending over an area of 330 m2, this is one of Tanzania’s smallest national parks, of which the lake itself covers a good two-thirds, depending on the season.

It was here on the southern shore of the lake that Ernest Hemingway’s camp was situated in the mid-1930s, while he went hunting for the largest and most beautiful kudu in the nearby area, known today as Tarangire National Park.

Lake Manyara National Park was established in 1960 to preserve the region’s unique ecosystem, and in 1981, it became part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB).

The area is part of the spectacular Great Rift Valley, which runs all the way through the African continent from the Middle East to Mozambique. Researchers believe that this rift system will at some point in the future cause the African continental plate to split into two separate continental plates and thus tear a large part of the African continent apart from the rest.

The national park, which is long and narrow, is bordered to the east by Lake Manyara itself, and to the west by the slopes of the Rift Valley, which are up to 600 metres high. In between are open grasslands, a jungle-like forest, mangroves, hot springs and swamps. The diversity is unrivalled, and it is impressive to see how drastically the landscape changes in a relatively small area. With the many different habitats comes a great variety of wildlife – although the animals can be difficult to spot amidst all the lushness.

The great biodiversity in the park also attracts many birds – more than 400 different bird species have been recorded here.

Lake Manyara itself is a soda lake, and the water level fluctuates a lot depending on whether it’s the rainy season or the dry season. Along the shore, you may be lucky enough to see large flocks of flamingos.

After this final nature experience, you’ll be driven to the airport where you’ll catch a plane to the exotic island of Zanzibar.

If you love Marrakesh, you’ll love Stone Town too. Narrow, winding streets without pavements, constant swarms of children and adults, bicycles, donkeys and merchants peddling everything in small shops sitting right out into the road. At the square’s “barazas” (built-in benches) in the middle of the labyrinth, men sit and talk over cups of strong coffee while children play ball and a cat stretches lazily in the sun.

At first sight, the city looks quite ramshackle, but just take a look at the doors! The big, heavy, elaborately decorated wooden doors are in many ways synonymous with Zanzibar’s biggest city.

There are markets and museums here, plenty of excursion opportunities and a vibrant waterfront. During the day, the waterfront is well-frequented by locals taking strolls, young men making trips from the quay as well as fishing and tourist boats both arriving and setting off. In the evening, there is a local market here.

Stone Town is in many ways practically an experience of the senses. Here you will find smells and sounds, flavours, colours, history and culture – Stone Town has it all. It is no mystery that the town is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Molti ci chiedono se è possibile organizzare un Safari a Zanzibar . Certo che si può! O meglio si può abbinare a Safari + Zanzibar o Zanzibar + Safari . Vedremo infatti in questo articolo quali sono le possibilità per abbinare il mare alla fantastica esperienza nella savana. Ci teniamo infatti a precisare che Zanzibar offre la possibilità di scoprirla attraverso escursioni di mare e terra ma non offre possibilità di safari all’interno del suo territorio. Per fare un safari partendo da Zanzibar bisogna quindi dirigersi verso la terraferma e volgere lo sguardo allo sterminato continente africano. È proprio in Tanzania che bisogna indirizzare l’attenzione per organizzare un Safari in uno dei suoi principali parchi naturali.

La Tanzania: da Zanzibar ai safari nel grande continente

La Tanzania si estende su una superficie di 947 mila km quadrati ed è al trentunesimo posto in classifica tra i più grandi Paesi del mondo. Presenta una morfologia variegata grazie ai diversi habitat e puó annoverare tra le sue bellezze naturali alcuni record. A nord-est è prevalentemente montuosa e qui svettano il mitico Kilimangiaro (5895 metri slm), il monte più alto di tutto il continente africano e le Pare Mountains. Nella stessa area si trova anche il Monte Meru (4566 metri slm), la quarta montagna più alta d’Africa e la seconda della Tanzania. Spostandoci a nord-ovest, invece, troviamo la zona dei Grandi Laghi dove ci sono il Lago Vittoria (il più grande lago del continente africano) e il lago Tanganyika (il piú profondo d’Africa conosciuto per le specie di pesci endemici). Tutta la Tanzania centrale infine si presenta come un immenso altopiano che degrada fino alla costa orientale dove incontra l’Oceano Indiano.

I parchi del nord

Di seguito un cenno ai meravigliosi Parchi del Nord della Tanzania, famosi per la natura incredibile e per la ricca fauna che li popola.

Quasi al confine con il Kenya troviamo l’area di conservazione Ngorongoro , che copre una superficie di 8.300 km quadrati e si estende su vaste distese di pianure montuose, savana, boschi e foreste, dalle pianure del Parco Nazionale del Serengeti a nord-ovest al braccio orientale della Great Rift Valley.

L’area di conservazione è famosa per il suo grande cratere vulcanico: il cratere Ngorongoro. Dopo un lungo tratto di strada irregolare, si arriva sul bordo del cratere (la caldera si trova a circa 2.200 metri slm) e lo scenario che si presenta davanti agli occhi è unico al mondo e di una bellezza mozzafiato.

Il cratere si è formato circa 3 milioni di anni fa, quando un vulcano gigante è esploso e il cono della caldera vulcanica è crollato verso l’interno. Scendere nel cratere significa visitare uno dei parchi più unici in Africa, un luogo senza tempo, dove tutto sembra sospeso e surreale. È uno dei più incredibili ecosistemi al mondo, brulicante di vita: qui convivono più di 25.000 animali, sia piccoli sia grandi.

Oltre a leoni, bufali, zebre, giraffe, ippopotami, elefanti e gnu, Ngorongoro non delude gli appassionati di birdwatching grazie alle numerose specie di uccelli, tra cui i fenicotteri. Inoltre è uno dei pochi posti dove è possibile avvistare il rinoceronte nero, che purtroppo è sempre più raro in Africa in quanto rischia l’estinzione.

Leoni al Serengeti

Al confine con il Ngorongoro, si trova il Parco Nazionale del Serengeti , un’immensa area protetta di circa 15 mila km quadrati.  ‘Serengit’ in lingua masai significa “pianura sconfinata”. Ed è proprio così che il parco si presenta davanti ai visitatori: distese infinite di pianure con diverse sfumature di colori.

Serengeti rappresenta una delle classiche cartoline africane per eccellenza del nostro immaginario: ampie savane a perdita d’occhio e qualche acacia disseminata qua e là, in particolare nella parte centro meridionale che si chiama Valle Seronera ed è il luogo dove i viaggiatori vivono maggiormente le esperienze di safari.

L’area settentrionale è più collinare e rocciosa e a Nord il parco confina con la riserva Masai Mara in Kenya: il confine è segnato dal fiume Mara. Diverse aree del Serengeti sono punteggiate di ‘koppies’, affioramenti granitici che spuntano dalle pianure. Il Serengeti è incredibile: l’immensità del paesaggio incontra il profondo azzurro del cielo per dare vita a un tripudio di colori unici.

Serengeti è uno dei santuari di fauna selvatica più famosi del mondo grazie al grandissimo numero di animali che si possono avvistare. Oltre ai grandi felini (ghepardi, leopardi e leoni), si incontrano grandi mandrie di bufali, piccoli gruppi di elefanti e giraffe, zebre, gnu e molte antilopi come eland, topi, kongoni e impala. Inoltre è possibile avvistare le iene maculate e gli sciacalli. Il Serengeti è famoso per la sua migrazione annuale degli gnu, di cui leggerete in un paragrafo dedicato.

Gnu al Tarangire

A circa 100 km da Arusha si trova il Tarangire National Park che, con un’estensione di 2.600 km quadrati, è il sesto parco nazionale più grande della Tanzania. Questo parco prende il suo nome dal fiume Tarangire che lo attraversa e che ‘nutre’ numerose paludi e zone verdi attorno alle quali un’alta concentrazione di animali si riunisce a bere e a nutrirsi di pascoli freschi in particolare durante la stagione secca. Questo regala ai visitatori meravigliose esperienze di safari.

Baobab del Tarangire National Park

Nel parco ci sono 3.000 elefanti (una delle più grandi popolazioni di elefanti in Africa) e un gran numero di gnu, zebre, giraffe, bufali, gazzelle, kudu, eland, dik-dik, leopardi, leoni e ghepardi. La flora del Tarangire offre uno spettacolo naturale incredibile: infatti, oltre alle acacie tipiche della savana, il parco è caratterizzato da una vasta quantità di giganteschi baobab secolari che sembrano disegnare il cielo e le colline selvagge con la loro forma particolare. Inoltre il Tarangire ospita più di 500 diverse specie di uccelli e da novembre ad aprile ci sono tanti uccelli migratori.

Lake Manyara National Park

Elefanti a Lake Manyara

A circa 130 km da Arusha è situato il Lake Manyara National Park che si estende su un’area di 330 km quadrati. Il parco è caratterizzato da una grande biodiversità: pianure, foreste, boschi di acacia, corsi d’acqua, uno scenario naturale con lo sfondo di una cornice d’eccellenza, la Great Rift Valley.

All’interno del parco si trova l’omonimo lago Manyara (la cui superficie è di 230 km quadrati) che, insieme al parco stesso, offre bellissime esperienze di safari. Oltre ai numerosi pellicani e fenicotteri, che spesso si adagiano sull’acqua quasi a creare l’effetto ottico di un ‘tappeto’, il lago e le sue sponde ospitano più di 400 specie di uccelli: per esempio gli aironi e le cicogne.

Nelle foreste è possibile incontrare le aquile, le faraone e i buceri. Il parco è famoso per i leoni che qui hanno la particolarità di arrampicarsi sugli alberi. Inoltre le esperienze di safari in questo parco offrono incontri con elefanti, giraffe, zebre, gnu, impala e facoceri.

Arusha National Park

A circa mezz’ora di strada dalla città di Arusha si trova l’Arusha National Park . Il parco è meno famoso e meno visitato rispetto agli altri parchi del Nord, in quanto ha un basso numero di predatori. Per questo motivo non viene quasi mai proposto per una prima esperienza di safari in Tanzania. Nonostante questo, il parco regala panorami davvero mozzafiato grazie al cratere Meru a Ovest, al cratere Ngurdoto a Sud-Est, alle praterie di savana e ai laghi Momella che si trovano a Nord-Est.

Il maestoso Monte Meru domina il parco: si tratta della seconda vetta più alta della Tanzania (4.566 m) e la quarta montagna più alta di tutta l’Africa. L’ultima eruzione del vulcano è avvenuta nel 1910 e i numerosi piccoli crateri nelle vicinanze sono segni che il Monte Meru era un tempo un vulcano molto attivo. Ancora oggi è considerato un vulcano in attività.

I paesaggi del parco sono molto diversificati offrendo un bel mix di flora e fauna, grazie alle praterie e alla fitta foresta pluviale. Una sensazione surreale di pace, accompagnata dal canto degli uccelli, pervade i visitatori alla vista dei laghi Momella: si tratta di sette laghi alcalini che sono alimentati sia da corsi d’acqua sotterranei sia dall’acqua piovana durante la stagione delle piogge. Ogni lago ha una diversa concentrazione di sale e per questo motivo ognuno sembra avere una colorazione con sfumature diverse. È possibile godere della tranquillità del lago facendo una gita in canoa sul lago piccolo. In riva al lago è facile incontrare le antilopi d’acqua e gli uccelli acquatici come cormorani, martin pescatori e i bellissimi fenicotteri. Il parco ospita anche bufali, facoceri, zebre e giraffe.

Nella lussureggiante foresta nella zona del cratere Ngurdoto è possibile avvistare la scimmia colobo e la scimmia mitis. Pur essendo presenti, non è facile avvistare gli elefanti e i leopardi per il loro continuo movimento. È possibile scalare la vetta del vulcano in tre giorni godendo dei diversi ecosistemi che offre l’itinerario (praterie, torrenti, foresta) fino alla vetta dove il paesaggio diventa di roccia e cenere. Inoltre durante la salita è possibile avvistare molti animali. Dalla vetta del Monte Meru si vede la vetta innevata del maestoso Kilimanjaro.

La grande migrazione del Serengeti

Il nostro primo safari

Ogni anno oltre un milione di gnu, insieme a 200.000 zebre e 300.000 gazzelle, migra alla ricerca di acqua e pascoli freschi regalando uno spettacolo naturale unico al mondo. I predatori seguono la migrazione e gli avvistamenti dei grandi felini mentre vanno a caccia regalano scene molto emozionanti. E mentre i leoni cacciano, non molto lontano si vedono le iene e gli sciacalli pronti in attesa.

Il flusso migratorio degli animali è ciclico in quanto segue le piogge. All’inizio di novembre cominciano le brevi piogge e a fine novembre gli gnu arrivano nel Serengeti dove rimangono fino marzo per nutrirsi di pascoli freschi. Ad aprile gli ungulati si muovono e attraversano le pianure dirigendosi verso Nord alla ricerca di acqua ed erba fresca. A giugno gli gnu arrivano sul fiume Grumeti radunandosi in mandrie di numerosi esemplari.

C’è sempre un pò di titubanza prima di attraversare il fiume perchè gli animali sanno della presenza dei coccodrilli, ma poi l’istinto ha il sopravvento e lo attraversano. A luglio e agosto gli gnu continuano il loro ‘viaggio’ verso Nord attraversando il Parco Nazionale del Serengeti. Qui a Nord il fiume Mara segna il confine del Serengeti con la riserva Masai Mara in Kenya e rappresenta l’ostacolo più insidioso della migrazione. Infatti davanti al fiume ci sono scene di confusione degli animali che prima di attraversare fanno avanti e indietro bloccandosi di fronte alle sponde del fiume stesso perchè hanno paura dei coccodrilli. Ma ancora una volta la natura segue il proprio corso e il fragore degli zoccoli degli gnu che attraversano rimbomba nel silenzio della natura africana. A ottobre gli gnu migrano di nuovo dirigendosi a Sud e a novembre il ciclo della migrazione ricomincia.

Il Kilimanjaro

Oltre a essere la montagna più alta d’Africa, il Kilimanjaro (anche comunemente noto come il tetto dell’Africa) è uno dei vulcani più grandi del mondo (non è un vulcano estinto ma dormiente). Il suo picco massimo, alto 5.895 metri, si chiama Uhuru Peak (in Kiswahili: vetta della libertà). Gli altri tre picchi vulcanici principali sono Kibo, Shira e Mawenzi.

Con la sua vetta sempre innevata, il Kilimanjaro si erge isolato in mezzo alla savana dominando maestoso sul Kilimanjaro National Park , che è uno dei parchi principali della Tanzania e si estende su una superficie di oltre 750 km quadrati. Il parco viene principalmente visitato da chi si reca per scalare la vetta della montagna e dal 1987 è riconosciuto dall’Unesco come Patrimonio dell’Umanità. Sia il parco sia la montagna sono un grande esempio di biodiversità.

Il monte ha diverse zone di vegetazione dal punto più basso a quello più alto grazie alle fasce climatiche differenti che si incontrano risalendo fino alla cima: pendii, foreste, brughiere, deserto alpino fino al raggiungimento della vetta. La montagna è riccamente popolata di specie animali, in particolare di mammiferi. Nel parco vivono più di 140 specie di mammiferi, tra cui primati, predatori e antilopi.

Il trekking sul Kilimanjaro è uno tra o più popolari al mondo, perchè si può salire senza corde, senza alcuna attrezzatura speciale per l’arrampicata e senza esperienze precedenti. Pur non essendo necessaria alcuna competenza tecnica, sicuramente un minimo di esperienza può fare la differenza. Il problema principale durante la scalata della montagna è l’altitudine, inoltre ci vogliono parecchi giorni per arrivare sulla cima più alta dove la temperatura arriva anche a -30° e c’è ovviamente un basso livello di ossigeno.

Si possono scegliere tra sei itinerari di arrampicata che variano per lunghezza, e quindi tempo di salita, scenari e livelli di difficoltà: 1. La Marangu Route, l’unica via di salita che offre alloggio nei rifugi; 2. La Machame Route, la via di arrampicata più popolare; 3. La Rongai Route, l’itinerario più semplice; 4. I parchi del Centro/Sud

Adesso ci immergiamo nella natura e nel silenzio della Tanzania più remota.

Selous Game Reserve

A poco più di 200 km dalla città di Dar Es Salaam, nella Tanzania del Sud, si trova la Selous Game Reserve , la più grande riserva nazionale protetta di tutto il Continente Nero e una delle più grandi del mondo. La riserva, che si estende su un’area di 54.600 km quadrati, è stata istituita nel 1922 e nel 1982 è stata dichiarata patrimonio mondiale dell’Unesco grazie alla ricchezza di fauna selvatica e ai diversi scenari naturali che offre.

La Selous offre una fuga dalle grandi quantità di persone che scelgono i safari nei parchi del Nord e allo stesso tempo offre una straordinaria esperienza di immersione nella natura selvaggia con una ricca fauna selvatica. La riserva è attraversata, nella parte centrale, dal fiume Rufiji, che è il fiume più grande della Tanzania . Questo fiume dà vita a una rete di canali, laghi e paludi, che, insieme alla vegetazione della riserva, creano un ecosistema davvero unico. Il fiume divide la riserva in due sezioni principali: Selous del Nord e Selous del Sud.

La parte settentrionale (circa il 20% della riserva) è riservata ai safari fotografici, mentre la parte meridionale (80% della riserva) è utilizzata quasi esclusivamente come riserva di caccia. La Selous è popolata da tantissimi animali, tra cui bufali, leoni, gnu, zebre, ippopotami, impala, antilopi, leopardi, coccodrilli e iene. Inoltre è uno dei pochi santuari di fauna selvatica dove incontrare le antilopi puku, le antilopi zibellino e i licaoni (che sono i cani selvatici africani). Nella Selous è presente anche un elevato numero di elefanti, anche se, a causa del bracconaggio, si è ridotto.

Anche gli appassionati di birdwatching non rimarranno delusi, in quanto nella Selous sono presenti oltre 400 specie di uccelli, per esempio il martin pescatore, il pellicano dal dorso rosa, l’aquila pescatrice, la cicogna dal becco giallo, il bucero e le cicogne trampoliere. Oltre ai classici safari con la jeep, è possibile fare i safari a piedi, per apprezzare appieno la bellezza e la serenità di questa remota riserva, e i safari in barca sul fiume, per avere un incontro ravvicinato con i coccodrilli e gli ippopotami.

La riserva prende il nome da Frederick Courteney Selous, cacciatore e capitano dei fucilieri britannici che qui ha trovato la morte durante un combattimento del 1917 contro l’esercito tedesco. Durante la vostra permanenza molto probabilmente passerete nelle vicinanze della sua tomba: F.C. Selous Grave.

È consigliabile visitare la Selous nel periodo che va da giugno a marzo.

Mikumi National Park

Al confine con la Selous Game Reserve si trova il Mikumi National Park . Il parco è stato istituito nel 1964, attualmente è il quarto parco nazionale più grande della Tanzania e si estende su un’area di 3.230 km quadrati. Grazie alla vicinanza con la Selous, il Mikumi fa parte del suo ecosistema ed è quindi popolato da un’alta densità di animali selvatici. Il parco regala bellissime esperienze di safari sia per la fauna sia per la sua ricca vegetazione.

Il Mikumi si trova a circa 280 km da Dar es Salaam ed è attraversato dalla strada che congiunge Dar ad Iringa. Infatti può essere raggiunto sia con il pullman sia con il piccolo aereo che atterra direttamente sulla air strip in mezzo alla savana. Il parco è situato in mezzo alle montagne (Arc Mountains): le più famose sono le montagne Uluguru e Malundwe che fanno parte dell’arco orientale. Il picco più alto delle montagne Malundwe raggiunge i 1.250 metri. A Ovest e a Nord si trovano le colline Mazunyungu, Madzini e Mbesera.

Il suo ambiente unico tra le montagne e le colline offre al parco luci e riflessi che eplodono in un tripudio scenografico di colori. La natura è molto variegata: si incontrano pianure alluvionali con alberi di acacia e baobab, savana, boschi fitti e pianure. Il parco ospita grandi branchi di elefanti, bufali, zebre, gnu, iene, leopardi, leoni, antilopi zibellino e grandi kudu. Per quanto riguarda le giraffe, qui si trova una specie endemica (nata dall’incrocio tra le giraffe masai e le giraffe reticolate). Inoltre è possibile vedere i leoni che si arrampicano sugli alberi (uno dei pochi posti insieme a Lake Manyara).

Il Mikumi ospita più di 400 specie di uccelli tra quelli che hanno l’habitat permanente e le specie migratorie. Gli uccelli più avvistati sono la otarda nera, l’uccello segretario, il picchio, la faraona, gli aironi e le aquile pescatrici.

Il periodo consigliato per visitare il parco è quello che coincide con la stagione secca e cioè tra giugno e febbraio/marzo.

Ruaha National Park

Sempre nella zona centro/sud si trova il Parco Nazionale Ruaha che, con un’estensione di 13.000 Km quadrati, è il secondo parco nazionale più grande della Tanzania. Essendo situato in una posizione remota (si trova a oltre 600 Km ad ovest di Dar Es Salaam) e di difficile accesso, il Ruaha è solitamente poco visitato dai turisti e conserva un fascino selvaggio e incontaminato. Infatti è possibile raggiungere il parco per via aerea con voli interni sia da Dar Es Salaam della durata di un paio di ore sia dalla Selous Game Reserve della durata di un’ora e mezza (alcuni viaggiatori abbinano nel loro viaggio i safari nella Selous e nel Ruaha).

A differenza della Selous, che è verdeggiante, il Ruaha è arido e appena si arriva, la prima caratteristica che colpisce, oltre ai colori della savana, sono i baobab che ‘seguono’ l’orizzonte in ogni direzione. Il parco è uno dei luoghi più belli e incontaminati della Tanzania, dove i paesaggi lasciano letteralmente senza fiato e le esperienze di safari sono spettacolari.

Il Ruaha deve il suo nome proprio al fiume “Great Ruaha” , che ne delimita il confine orientale e che rappresenta uno dei punti cruciali per l’avvistamento degli animali nel parco stesso. Il Great Ruaha River è famoso per le sue spettacolari gole e a ridosso del fiume sarà facile avvistare ippopotami e numerosi coccodrilli. Oltre a bufali, leopardi, elefanti, giraffe, impala, iene e zebre, nel parco vivono il 10% della popolazione mondiale di leoni, una delle quattro popolazioni di ghepardi dell’Africa Orientale e la terza più grande popolazione di licaoni al mondo. Inoltre il Ruaha si caratterizza per la presenza di oltre 500 diverse specie di uccelli.

Il Lago Tanganika e i suoi parchi: Mahale Mountains National Park e il Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park

Il Lago Tanganyika è il secondo lago più grande dell’Africa orientale, il lago di acqua dolce più lungo del mondo (circa 660km) e il secondo più profondo del mondo (1.436 metri) subito dopo il lago Baikal in Russia. Segna il confine centro-sud occidentale della Tanzania con gli stati del Congo, Burundi, Zambia e si trova nell’estremità meridionale della Rift Valley occidentale.

I fiumi più grandi che sfociano e ‘alimentano’ il lago sono il Malagarasi, il Ruzizi e il Kalambo, che ha una delle cascate più alte del mondo (215 metri). È una riserva di acqua di notevole importanza economica per la regione: infatti lungo le coste del lago crescono le palme da olio e si coltivano riso e colture di sussistenza. Anche la pesca è un’attività molto importante, infatti, grazie al suo isolamento ecologico, il lago è famoso per ospitare moltissime specie endemiche di fauna ittica, che includono oltre 250 specie di ciclidi. I ciclidi sono pesci molto popolari per i loro colori vivaci e rendono il lago una destinazione eccezionale anhe per lo snorkeling e per le immersioni.

Uno degli importanti porti situati lungo il lago Tanganyika è Kigoma in Tanzania. Sulle rive selvagge del Lago Tanganyika si trovano i parchi Gombe National Park e Mahale Mountains National Park .

Il Gombe National Park è il parco nazionale più piccolo della Tanzania, ha un’estensione di 52 km quadrati ed è un luogo selvaggio caratterizzato da foreste lussureggianti. L’attrazione principale del parco sono le famiglie di scimpanzè che vivono qui. È possibile partecipare alle passeggiate guidate che accompagnano i visitatori nella profondità della foresta per osservare gli straordinari primati, e sedersi con loro è un’esperienza straordinaria. Il parco è diventato famoso grazie a Jane Goodall, la primatologa e antropologa che ha trascorso molti anni nelle sue foreste cominciando i suoi importanti studi sui primati nel 1960. Oltre agli scimpanzè, altre specie di primati vivono nel Gombe, come scimmie colobi e babbuini. Inoltre ci sono antiolpi e una vasta varietà di specie di uccelli.

Vicino al Gombe incontriamo il Mahale Mountains National Park, che ospita la più grande popolazione al mondo di scimpanzè (circa 1.000 esemplari). Anche al Mahale è possibile partecipare alle passeggiate guidate per addentrarsi nella foresta a incontrare questi primati: la passeggiata può durare anche fino a 3 ore. Guardare gli scimpanzè mentre mangiano, mentre si puliscono, mentre litigano e si prendono cura dei loro piccoli è davvero un’esperienza indimenticabile. Il parco ha un’estensione di 1.613 km quadrati e ha una natura molto rigogliosa, selvaggia e variegata, che comprende foreste, praterie e boschi. Nella zona si possono incontrare anche leoni, bufali, leopardi, giraffe e zebre. Sia il Gombe sia il Mahale sono raggiungibili solo tramite barca dal lago Tanganiyca e la loro posizione remota li rende incontaminati regalando uno spaccato d’Africa davvero primordiale.

Katavi National Park

Il Katavi National Park si trova in una posizione molto remota nella Tanzania sud-occidentale ed è il terzo parco più grande della Tanzania (ha un’estensione di circa 4.500 km quadrati). Il parco prende il nome da un cacciatore di nome Katabi il cui spirito, secondo una leggenda locale, vive in un albero di tamarindo vicino al lago Katavi.

Durante i safari è possibile andare a vedere l’albero ai cui piedi la gente del posto lascia ancora offerte in cerca di benedizione. La sua posizione ha contribuito a fare in modo che il parco abbia ogni anno pochi visitatori e che quindi rappresenti un pezzo d’Africa davvero incontaminato e ancestrale. È possibile raggiungerlo con voli di linea bisettimanali da Dar Es Salaam. Infatti via terra implicherebbe un viaggio di due tre giorni di auto.

Il Katavi è molto selvaggio ed è caratterizzato da una grande varietà di habitat naturali: vanta ripide scogliere, pianure alluvionali, boschi, praterie, laghi e foreste. I numerosi corsi d’acqua delle pianure sono popolati da una grande quantità di coccodrilli e ippopotami. Nel parco vivono le più numerose mandrie di bufali del mondo e abbondanti quantità di altra fauna selvatica tra cui elefanti, zebre e giraffe. Inoltre ci sono molti predatori: leoni, leopardi, ghepardi, licaoni e iene.

Il fiume Katuma attraversa il parco e durante la stagione secca si prosciuga dando forma a pozze fangose dove poter osservare un gran numero di ippopotami che nelle pozze stesse provocano combattimenti tra maschi. Fare un safari nel Katavi significa passare anche giorni interi senza incontrare altre persone, godendo del silenzio e della natura selvaggia africana.

Gli alloggi per il Safari

In tutti i parchi Nazionali della Tanzania che abbiamo citato e raccontato nell’articolo sono presenti lodge, campi tendati, camping, e c’è anche la possibilità di fare safari in campi tendati mobili, strutture ricettive di differenti caratteristiche che offrono soggiorno e ristoro ai visitatori. Ci sono soluzioni per tutte le tipologie di viaggiatori, escursionisti, esploratori e soluzioni luxury. Ovviamente in base al vostro budget e alla tipologia di safari che avete in mente potrete optare per un alloggio adatto alle vostre esigenze.

Come raggiungere i Parchi

In attesa della partenza

I principali parchi sono tutti raggiungibili per via aerea o via terra con auto e pullman. Le città principali da cui partire per i giorni di safari, arrivando con voli internazionali dall’Italia o con voli interni da Zanzibar nei rispettivi aeroporti, in Tanzania, sono:

– Arusha per tutta la zona dei parchi del Nord

– Dar es Salaam per tutti i parchi del centro sud

Affidandosi ad operatori turistici, solitamente da Arusha per i safari nei Parchi del Nord si va via terra, invece da Dar Es Salaam si raggiungono i Parchi del Sud con piccoli voli di linea che atterrano direttamente sulle air strip in mezzo alla savana. Anche per gli spostamenti tra i parchi del Sud e tra i parchi più remoti si utilizzano i voli.

Il sistema stradale della Tanzania non è ovviamente al livello dei paesi avanzati e le distanze/comfort del viaggio ne risentono.

Se scegliete di partire per i safari da Zanzibar, è possibile valutare un trasferimento anche via traghetto fino a Dar e poi spostarvi con i mezzi su gomma (o, come menzionato sopra, da Zanzibar in aereo fino a Dar e poi via terra). È importante tenere presente che optare per queste due ultime soluzioni significa avere bisogno di più tempo a disposizione trattandosi di lunghe distanze.

Periodo migliore per un Safari

Il periodo migliore per effettuare un Safari coincide con la stagione “secca” quella cioè con meno probabilità di pioggia. In questo periodo infatti la vegetazione è scarna ed è possibile avvistare con più facilità gli animali che andranno a ripararsi nelle zone d’ombra degli alberi e tenderanno ad avvicinarsi tutti nelle pozze d’acqua per abbeverarsi. I mesi da evitare sono sicuramente quelli di Aprile e Maggio. I Parchi infatti sono solitamente chiusi e inagibili. Ottimi i mesi che vanno da Luglio a Ottobre/Novembre nonché i mesi di Gennaio e Febbraio fino a metà Marzo. Proprio in questo periodo nei parchi del Nord avvengono le famose migrazioni di massa all’interno del Serengeti. Spettacolo suggestivo e impressionante.

Come organizzare un viaggio abbinando Zanzibar ad un safari in Tanzania

Suggeriamo a tutti i viaggiatori che vogliono immergersi nella natura selvaggia della savana di valutare le diverse opzioni e di scegliere prima della partenza come vivere questa esperienza, in base alle proprie esigenze e preferenze. Per chi parte dall’Italia e vuole dirigersi a Zanzibar, ma allo stesso tempo fare una o più esperienze di safari, la soluzione migliore è quella di combinare alcuni giorni di safari con alcuni giorni sulle splendide spiagge dell’isola di Zanzibar o delle isole di Mafia e di Pemba.

Optando per questa soluzione bisogna rinunciare alla comodità di un veloce volo charter e programmare l’itinerario con voli di linea.

Safari organizzato partendo da Zanzibar (consigliato per safari di breve-media durata)

Molti ci chiedono se è possibile organizzare un Safari a Zanzibar . Certo che si può! O meglio si può “da” Zanzibar.

Una volta arrivati nella splendida isola di Zanzibar sono molteplici le opzioni per dirigersi verso la Tanzania alla scoperta della fantastica savana e del suo paesaggio mozzafiato. Ci teniamo a precisare che Zanzibar offre la possibilità di scoprirla attraverso escursioni di mare e terra ma non offre possibilità di safari all’interno del suo territorio. Per fare un safari partendo da Zanzibar bisogna quindi dirigersi verso la terraferma e volgere lo sguardo allo sterminato continente africano. È proprio in Tanzania che bisogna indirizzare l’attenzione per organizzare un Safari in uno dei suoi principali parchi naturali . Con questa soluzione scegliete di arrivare a Zanzibar e andare da lì successivamente in Tanzania per qualche giorno di safari.

• Giorno 2: Colazione e proseguimento in jeep del safari all’interno del parco per 2/3 ore. Il percorso prosegue con direzione Dar dove poter riprendere l’aereo con destinazione Zanzibar. È prevista la sosta per il pranzo nel tragitto tra il Mikumi e l’aeroporto di Dar. Rientro in serata in hotel a Zanzibar.

6 giorni di safari nei Parchi del Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara

• Giorno 1: Partenza da Zanzibar in aereo con arrivo all’aeroporto internazionale di Arusha nel nord della Tanzania. Cena e pernottamento ad Arusha.

• Giorno 2: Colazione e trasferimento in jeep presso il parco Nazionale del Lago Manyara, pranzo al sacco e intera giornata dedicata a foto e avvistamento animali. Nel tardo pomeriggio arrivo al lodge con cena e pernottamento

Giorno 3: Colazione e trasferimento in jeep con direzione Parco Nazionale del Serengeti. Pranzo al sacco e sosta durante il percorso presso il villaggio Masaai di Boma. Durante il percorso si avvisteranno gli animali e si proseguirà il safari fotografico. In serata rientro al lodge con cena e pernottamento.

Giorno 4: Colazione con intera giornata dedicata al safari fotografico e avvistamento di animali all’interno del Serengeti National Park. Questo parco della Tanzania ha un’altissima concentrazione di fauna selvatica. Pranzo al sacco con rientro in serata al lodge per la cena e il pernottamento.

Giorno 5: Colazione e partenza in jeep per il Ngorongoro. Pranzo al sacco con visita del cratere di Ngorongoro dove poter ammirare la stupenda vegetazione e la molteplicità di animali selvatici. Intera giornata dedicata a foto e avvistamento di animali. Pranzo al sacco. Nel tardo pomeriggio ci si dirige verso il lodge per la cena e il pernottamento.

Giorno 6: Colazione e partenza in auto per l’aeroporto di Arusha da cui prendere il volo per Zanzibar previsto per le ore 12.30. Rientro a Zanzibar in hotel per il pomeriggio.

Come già spiegato per i safari in Tanzania con partenza dall’Italia i prezzi possono variare in base al periodo e alla sistemazione scelta. Un safari di 2 giorni al Selous tutto incluso con game drive privato per 2 persone ha il costo di € 740 a persona e include:

L’esperienza di safari più economica è quella di una giornata , con partenza la mattina presto e rientro a Zanzibar tardo pomeriggio. Il prezzo per il Selous si abbassa di circa 200 euro e prevede un costo a persona di € 540 .

Attenzione: raccomandazioni per valutare un buon safari

Il safari non è una semplice escursione a Zanzibar che può essere gestita (a proprio rischio) anche da beach boys inesperti. Sul safari non si scherza! Ed è giusto affidarsi sempre ad agenzie con esperienza nella prenotazione e gestione di safari in Tanzania. Una cosa che alcuni operatori tendono a fare è non specificare in quale lodge si effettuerà il pernottamento . Tanto che per vendere safari più economici offrono strutture di basso livello dove condizioni igieniche e sicurezza vengono meno. Ci sono agenzie a Zanzibar (neanche così economiche) che puntano sulla quantità a discapito del servizio. Transfer in ritardo di 30 minuti per portare gli ospiti in aeroporto, lodge fatiscenti con camere sporche e piene di insetti, piscina abbandonata che è diventata uno stagno con tanto di rane e…. potremmo andare avanti a lungo. Quindi in primis informatevi sempre sulla qualità della struttura che vi viene proposta per i pernottamenti. Il lusso in safari pensiamo sia fuoriluogo ma una camera confortevole e pulita è il minimo per vivere l’esperienza senza inconvenienti.

Un’altra cosa che fa molto la differenza è la tipologia di game drive che viene proposta . Solitamente se si prenota un safari da soli o in coppia, arrivati al parco si viene raggruppati con altri viaggiatori così da riempire a tappo le jeap. Una cosa che apprezziamo dell’agenzia da noi scelta per i safari è che il game drive anche per solo 2 persone si svolge con jeep riservata e guida privata. Potete immaginare quanto sia differente l’esperienza di immersione nella natura che si può vivere.

In ultimo può costituire un valore aggiunto interfacciarsi con un corrispondente italiano per non tralasciare alcun dettaglio e avere un riferimento in caso di dubbi o necessità.

Quanto tempo dedicare ad un Safari

Il tempo ovviamente è variabile in base alle disponibilità di ogni viaggiatore, al budget e al tipo di viaggio che si vuole scegliere.

Se si vuole fare un safari breve (2-3 giorni al massimo) conviene organizzarlo con partenza da Zanzibar e orientarsi verso il parco del Selous (Nyerere National Park) più vicino rispetto ai parchi del Nord.

Se si vuole fare un safari lungo e dedicare al safari un’intera settimana conviene partire dall’italia e atterrare ad Arusha per combinare più parchi del Nord (Serengeti, Ngorongoro e Lake Manyara, oppure Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara e Tarangire). Oppure atterrare a Dar Es Salam per combinare più parchi del Sud (Mikumi, Selous, Ruha).

Come prima esperienza conviene valutare un safari breve così da valutare se piace molto questo tipo di viaggio al punto da ripeterlo, allungando la permanenza in savana. Ad alcuni piace questa immersione prolungata, per altri può risultare dopo un pò noiosa o semplicemente ripetitiva.

Tra le proposte di safari in Tanzania con partenza da Zanzibar c’è anche il Selous o il Mikumi di 1 solo giorno . Pensateci bene se può valerne la pena perchè il costo è comunque elevato (dato che c’è da sostenere la spesa del volo e dell’ingresso al parco) ma vi perdereste la magia del tramonto e dell’alba in savana, oltre ai suoni della vita selvatica che riempiono la notte.

E’ opportuno scegliere il giusto periodo a seconda delle zone che si andranno a visitare. La stagione secca è la migliore per la possibilità di avvistare un alto numero di animali.

Consigliato portare con sè delle aspirine, fermenti lattici, paracetamolo, farmaci generici per supporto in caso di problemi gastrointestinali o dissenteria.

Repellenti e creme solari

Consigliato portare al seguito delle creme solari ad alta protezione, ricordatevi che anche in safari vi trovate pur sempre nella zona equatoriale del mondo. Portate dei buoni repellenti per insetti da usare nelle uscite o nelle soste presso i lodge.

Informatevi bene prima della partenza se i bambini sono accettati nei vari lodge in cui vorrete soggiornare. Il safari è sicuramente un’esperienza entusiasmante ma allo stesso tempo impegnativa per bambini piccoli.

Attrezzatura

Valutate di portare con voi l’adeguata attrezzatura per proteggersi dalle basse temperature o dalle piogge. Se ad esempio volete “scalare” (il percorso di salita è accessibile) il Kilimanjaro o se volete dirigervi verso i parchi dedicati all’avvistamento degli scimpanzé che richiedono lunghe camminate nella foresta.

Abbigliamento

Per il safari è consigliato un abbigliamento leggero con colori chiari (per esempio lino o cotone). In base alla destinazione inoltre vi consigliamo di portare: pantaloni lunghi, felpa, k-way, cappellino e occhiali da sole. Evitare i colori scuri con il blue e il nero. Attirano le mosche tse-tse e sotto il sole saranno troppo caldi. Utilizzate scarpe sportive per le gite in jeep e scarpe da trekking per i percorsi più impegnativi. Considerate che c’è escursione termica nelle varie fasce della giornata. All’alba potrebbe essere necessario indossare il piumino perchè fa freddo, ma durante la giornata fa caldo e quindi è bene avere una camicia leggera o le maniche corte. La sera tardi rinfresca di nuovo.

Per il safari prevedete dei bagagli leggeri con il minimo indispensabile. Sono frequenti gli spostamenti e i voli interni vengono in genere effettuati con aerei piccoli. Consigliamo un bagaglio morbido.

Attrezzatura fotografica

Durante i safari non possono mancare le foto agli animali, se le avete attrezzatevi con macchine fotografiche e tele obiettivi. Utile pulire l’attrezzatura alla fine di ogni giornata per rimuovere la polvere accumulata durante le uscite.

Aprite il vostro cuore e la vostra anima alle emozioni che la natura offre, immergetevi realmente nel posto in cui vi troverete, apprezzate e godete della bellezza dei colori al tramonto, degli scenari selvaggi non contaminati dall’uomo, della natura africana che non ha eguali. La vita nella savana è cruda, ha le proprie regole ed ogni specie vive con spirito di sopravvivenza. Potreste imbattervi in carcasse, in scene di caccia, in avvoltoi o iene che si cibano di avanzi, in aquile che attaccano cuccioli di impala. Cercate di interfacciarvi con le persone che incontrerete: maasai, rangers, guide, che amano raccontare la vita quotidiana nel loro spaccato d’Africa.

Non pensate di essere allo zoo (a nostro parere posti che andrebbero chiusi) quando avrete la fortuna di avvistare branchi di animali. Quando li vedrete entrerete in contatto con il loro essere più profondo, in piena libertà nella parte di terra che appartiene a loro. Ricordatevi che entrate a casa loro, con rispetto e in punta di piedi.

Dipende da quale safari vorrai fare ma per tua informazione considera che il volo è spesso diretto sulle airstrips dei vari parchi del centro sud. Per i parchi del nord solitamente si vola su Arusha e poi in auto verso i parchi. Ti consigliamo di passare almeno una notte in savana per vivere appieno questa fantastica esperienza. Buon viaggio.

Giorno 1: arrivo ad arusha - benvenuti in tanzania.

2 ° giorno: Tarangire National Park

Day 1: Arrival Day

On arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport our representative will meet you and drive to Mvuli hotel or the same Lodge in Arusha. Later our safari manager will come for detailed safari briefing & leave you to enjoy the nice weather of Arusha city & lodge facilities.

Overnight at Mvuli Hotel in Arusha or similar. Breakfast included.

Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

Leave the lodge after breakfast for Tarangire National Park, the drive is via Arusha town & along the beautiful Masai steppe, drop your safari chef at Makuyuni junction and enter the park for your first game drive of the trip. Tarangire runs along the beautiful lines of the Tarangire River and mostly is made up of low-lying hills on the floor of the Great East African Rift Valley. The vegetation in this park mainly consists of huge African baobab trees, scattered Acacia woodland, and a large swamp area in the south.

Tarangire River and the swamp are acting as refugee camps for wild animals during the dry season. This park is highlighted with some of the largest elephants heard found nowhere in Africa, the rare species of animals like the Fringed-eared Oryx and the Great Kudu are also found here. Day 3: Tarangire – Serengeti National Park

After breakfast departs for Serengeti National Park “Wild Africa” Driving is across local villages and along the high-lying farmland of Karatu until you reach the Ngorongoro gate. After registration & other park formalities, you will drive up to the highlands of Ngorongoro 2,300 meters, and stop at the crater viewpoint for some great photos of the crater floor from above. After driving along the Crater rim and down to the endless rolling plains of Serengeti National Park.

On the way stop at one of the Masai villages where you will be invited by Masai warriors for some cultural encounter, you will go in and around their houses & you will have a brief story of their nomadic life around this area, you will meet members of the family and kids, you may ask questions & take pictures with them. Later they will sing a farewell song which involves jumping high, you are allowed to join the dancing. Afterward, drive to Naabi Hills Gate for check-in to Serengeti.

Spend some time for registration and other park formalities, this will be the time to have your packed lunch and thereafter start your afternoon game drives in the Serengeti in search of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Arrive at the Lodge during or before the sunset.

Overnight at Serengeti heritage luxury tented Camp or the same private tented Camp Central Serengeti. All meals included.

Day 4: Full Day Serengeti

We recommend an early morning game drive starting at 06:30, depart your lodge after a cup of coffee, carrying your breakfast box and lunch box. Early morning game drives allows you to witness the beautiful sunrise in the Serengeti with possibilities of spotting cat family on the road as the spend most of their morning time on the road avoiding the morning mist.

You can also see other predators coming back from their long night of hunting or a group of lioness planning a morning ambush or eating along the road. if the Wildebeest Migration will be packed in Serengeti you will go straight to where they are and spend much time with them, you can anticipate to see some animal action like hunting, fighting, eating even hunting. Serengeti is still worth a visit with or without the Wildebeest Migration. Later on, you go back to your campsite during or before the sunset.

Day 5: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

On this day the best safari & Zanzibar beach holidays takes you to the world's nature wonder The Ngorongoro Crater. Depart Serengeti after breakfast, en-route game drive up to Naabi Hills gate & past Malanja depression, reach Ngorongoro Conservation Area & descent 600 meters into the Crater floor for game viewing.

Ngorongoro Crater the Eden of Africa was formed some million years ago due to internal forces, after the eruption it left a huge caldera which was mistakenly called Crater. Supported by a yearly water supply from the highland of Ngorongoro and enough fodder the Crater supports a larger variety of wildlife including herds of wildebeest, zebra, elephant, hippos, buffalo, topi, eland & the rare black rhino.

This picturesque crater has a dense population of predators like hyenas, lions, Cheetahs, jackals, and the mysterious leopard which needs a sharp and trained eye to spot. Birds are abundant from aquatic to forest birds, with a bit of luck the so-called Big Five can be seen in the course of one day of game drives.

Apart from animals the Crater to a larger number of bird species both aquatic and terrestrial birds. You will visit the hippo pool & a large but shallow alkaline lake on the Southwest corner of the crater frequently visited by some flocks of flamingos & hippos. Break for lunch & later drive to Simba public campsite at the Crater rim for dinner & overnight.

Day 6: Ngorongoro – Arusha – Zanzibar

Best safaris & Zanzibar Beach day 6, after leisurely breakfast pack your stuff & take nice pictures before starting your way back to Arusha airport for your flight to Zanzibar at around noon. If you like you can visit some of the Masai market or curio shops on the way to Arusha. Breakfast & lunch are included.

Arriving at Zanzibar airport, you will meet our representative who will transfer you to Sunshine Hotel Zanzibar on the North East of Zanzibar Island.

Overnight at Sunshine Hotel Zanzibar on the North East of the Island. Dinner and breakfast included.

Day 7-8: Zanzibar beach

Relax and enjoy the beaches of Zanzibar, if you wish you can organize some water sports with the lodge. (Option) you can arrange a visit to the spice plantation and the stone town in one of these days or you can do the spice tour on your way to stone town on day 9, and may be the stone town tour on day 10 if you have late flight if you have late flight.

Day 9: Zanzibar Beach to Stone Town

On this day after breakfast you will depart for stone town en-route (Option) you can do the famous spice tour which include lunch (Zanzibar dishes cooked with spices) after tour you will drive to Tembo House Hotel in stone town. In the afternoon you can walk around stone town on your own or you can arrange a boat ride to Prison Island and come back during the sunset. See Zanzibar island tours

Day 10: Departure

Depending on your flight time, after breakfast (Option) you can do a guided stone town tour or relax and walk around until your departure time to Zanzibar airport for your flight back home. Breakfast included.

Tutti i nostri diversi itinerari per safari in Tanzania comprendono numerosi servizi che sono già tutti compresi nei prezzi esposti. L’unica spesa non compresa è quella del viaggio aereo per raggiungere la Tanzania.

Il  costo di un viaggio safari in Tanzania  può però dipendere da molti fattori. I prezzi, infatti, degli  itinerari nella Rift Valley  vanno dai 700 ai 3000 €, in base alla quantità di giorni che si prenotano e al tipo di stile di vita che si vuole mantenere. Se ti sei quindi chiesto  quanto costa un tour in Tanzania , la risposta è: “circa 300 € al giorno”.

Quando partire per un tour in Tanzania?

La Tanzania ha un  clima tropicale . Negli altopiani le temperature variano tra i  10 e i 20°C  rispettivamente durante le stagioni fredde e calde. La parte restante del paese presenta temperature che raramente scendono sotto i 20°C. Il  periodo più caldo  va da novembre a febbraio (25-31°C), mentre il  periodo più freddo  si verifica tra maggio e agosto (15-20°C). Il clima è fresco nelle regioni di alta montagna.

Nella zona nord della Tanzania e sulla costa settentrionale, vi sono  due stagioni delle piogge , rispettivamente ottobre-dicembre (definite le piccole piogge o Vuli) e marzo.
