India eVisa Requirements for New Zealand Citizens

  • Simplified Application Form
  • Expert Application Review
  • Approved visa or money back

Citizens of New Zealand are among the 170 nationalities eligible to apply for an online visa for India .

The simplified Indian eVisa application for New Zealanders allows travelers to easily obtain electronic travel authorization for India from the comfort of their own home.

This online visa to enter India removes the need to visit an embassy or consulate to submit an application in person or wait in long border queues to apply for an Indian visa on arrival.

Do I Need a Visa to Go to India from New Zealand?

New Zealand passport holders are required to have an approved visa for India no matter the intended length of stay in the country or the purpose of the travel.

The traditional visa application process involves visiting an embassy or consulate of India in New Zealand to apply in person. However, it is now possible to submit an India eVisa application from New Zealand exclusively online.

More information can be found on the India visa policy , where New Zealanders can learn how the online visa works in detail.

What is an India eVisa for New Zealand Citizens and What Does It Do?

The Indian eVisa for New Zealand passport holders is an electronic visa introduced in 2014 to expedite entry to the country for purposes of tourism, business, medical treatment , or to accompany someone undergoing a medical procedure in India.

It may be issued as a:

  • Tourist e-Visa : New Zealanders can get a multiple-entry visa that allows up to 90 days for tourism with each entry and is valid for 365 days from the date of approval. They can also obtain a double-entry tourist visa that allows a total stay of up to 30 days .
  • Business e-Visa : Permits the NZ holder to stay in India for up to 180 days during its one-year validity. Can be used for business activities such as meetings and contract negotiations, training purposes, or to attend a conference, workshop or symposium.
  • Medical e-Visa: Issued to citizens of New Zealand who wish to seek medical treatment in India as well as up to 2 companions who wish to travel with the patient (although for children it is only available as a patient visa). It permits a maximum 60-day consecutive stay and is valid for 120 days from approval.

All of the different India e-Visa types for New Zealanders are multiple-entry travel authorizations , with the exception of the online medical visa, which is a triple-entry visa. The second and third entries to India with an approved Medical e-Visa should be within 60 days of the first.

Further details can be obtained via the Indian embassies and consulates in New Zealand.

Documents Required for an Indian eVisa for New Zealanders Application

In order to submit an online India visa application for tourism from New Zealand, it is necessary to have the following:

  • New Zealand passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the expected date of arrival in India, containing at least 2 blank pages
  • Digital image of the passport information page (also known as the biographical page)
  • A recent photograph of the applicant, passport-style
  • Valid credit or debit card

New Zealander applicants for an Indian business e-Visa must also have a business card providing details of a host company in India. Additionally, Medical e-Visa applicants are asked to supply a certified letter from an Indian hospital or medical center.

It is always useful to have at hand the visa requirements for New Zealand citizens in order to learn the general conditions and information required.

How Can I Apply for an India eVisa from New Zealand?

To apply for an eVisa for India from New Zealand it is necessary to complete a simple electronic application . This firm can be filled out within a matter of minutes with information including:

  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Passport number
  • Passport issue/expiry date

After answering all of the questions on the form, you will need to upload the necessary supporting documents depending on the purpose of the intended stay with the eVisa. Finally, it is necessary that NZ citizens pay the Indian online visa fee with a valid debit or credit card to submit the application.

Before submitting an India eVisa application from New Zealand, you are strongly advised to double-check all the information provided is correct and that it matches the details of your NZ passport. This is because even small errors may result in a denial of the eVisa or unnecessary delays in processing.

India eVisa processing time for NZ travelers

The standard processing time for the India online visa for New Zealanders is around 48 hours , although it may take up to 4 days to process in some cases.

Therefore, applicants from NZ are advised to apply at least 1 week in advance of their travel dates to allow for enough time for India eVisa approval.

How will I receive my India eVisa for citizens of New Zealand?

When completing the Indian eVisa form, New Zealanders are asked to supply a current email address they frequently check. Once an application is processed, the approved eVisa is sent to this email inbox.

Applicants can then print a copy of the eVisa to present alongside their New Zealand passport upon arrival at an immigration checkpoint in India.

Travel to India from New Zealand

Although the online visa permits the traveler to exit India through any authorized checkpoint, holders of an approved eVisa for India for New Zealand citizens are required to enter the country at any of the following points of entry:

  • Tiruchirapalli
  • Visakhapatnam

However, it should be noted that eVisa holders entering India on a cruise are only permitted to use the Cochin, Goa, and Mangalore seaports. A traditional embassy visa is required to enter India on a cruise through a different seaport.

  • An electronic visa does not guarantee you an entry into the country if the border control has the power to stop you if there are any issues with the visa or yourself.
  • The application is to be submitted online and you can get this permit from the home itself.
  • As for the case of an offline application, the processing of the application will begin once you pay the required fee.
  • The documents must be handed over to the Consulate personally.
  • If you are applying through an agent, you will have to submit an authority letter so that the agency can carry out the application process on your behalf.

In order to check the status of your tourist visa to New Zealand online, you will have to visit the official website of the New Zealand High Commission. You can check the status for your electronic visa in this manner. For your offline visa, there is an alternative method. You can contact the High Commission for the visa status, else you can contact your agent to know about the processing of your visa.

When you finally get the visa, there are certain things that you need to keep in mind. Some of the most important ones are listed as follows:

  • Make a note of the visa expiry date, as well as the number of entries permitted. You must not stay in the country beyond this period.
  • You should travel to New Zealand within the validity of your visa.
  • Make sure to carry a copy of your passport and other travel documents while you are in the country.
  • Issue health insurance and travel Insurance from a certified company for safety.
  • Get your documents checked and your passport verified by the Border Control.
  • Consult the airport authorities for any kind of assistance required.
  • Check your visa copy for other guidelines and rules to be followed.
  • Ensure not to get involved in any kind of employment. You can, however, do volunteer work.
  • The tourist prohibited areas must be stayed out of.
  • Make sure you don’t overstay and apply for visa extension in time.
  • If you have a change of plans and you need to stay longer, you can apply for an extension or a different kind of visa at least one month prior to the expiry.

New Zealand's Visa Curbs Likely To Hit Indian Immigrants

While the effectiveness of these additional requirements remains in question, the move is likely to impact Indians seeking jobs in New Zealand.

New Zealand's Visa Curbs Likely To Hit Indian Immigrants

New Zealand government hopes to control the "unsuitable" number of migrants entering the country.

Taking a cue from Australia and Canada, New Zealand has announced tighter visa rules to check the number of immigrants, increasing the requirements to qualify for jobs in the country.

The new requirements include English proficiency, work experience and skill criteria, besides reducing the duration of stay with a work permit. By overhauling the immigration system, the New Zealand government hopes to control the "unsuitable" number of migrants entering the country.

Journalist Dita De Boni of the National Business Review in Auckland expressed concern that it might be tougher for Indians and other immigrants to get jobs. "The new rules being introduced in New Zealand will inevitably make it harder for Indian and other immigrants from countries outside the Anglosphere to come and work here. Whether or not that is the intention, however, is hard to tell," she told NDTV in an exclusive comment.

There has been a steady rise in the number of Indians in New Zealand. As per the 2018 New Zealand census, Indians made up about 4.7% of the population.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in October 2023 said New Zealand has approximately 2,50,000 persons of Indian origin and NRIs, most of whom are settled there permanently. Data on ENZ.org (a New Zealand government affiliate) indicates that approximately 18,000 Indians have migrated to the country since 2011.

New Zealand's Immigration minister Erica Stanford announced the changes to the Accredited Employer Worker Visa (AEWV), which serves as the main temporary work visa. It was introduced in 2022 to alleviate workforce shortages due to the pandemic and lockdowns.

Three main changes have been proposed in the visa rules. First, English-language requirements will be enforced for low-skill jobs. Next, most work visas will require a minimum threshold of skills, in the form of work experience or suitable qualifications. Last, the maximum continuous stay allowed on work permits will be reduced to three years from five. Employers are also encouraged to hire immigrants only after making sure that there are no "suitable and available New Zealander" candidates who have applied for the job. It aims to not only control immigration, but also to provide more employment to locals and incentivise them to stay in the country. In 2023, the country recorded a loss of 47,000 citizens who moved elsewhere for better work opportunities.  The Immigration minister claimed the visa restrictions would be beneficial for migrant rights. Citing previous instances of exploitation by some New Zealand employers who were misusing the AEWV scheme to take money from aspiring immigrants, Erica Stanford stated, "By having an English-language requirement migrants will be better able to understand their rights or raise concerns about an employer early."

However, questioning the need for these changes, Dita De Boni stated, "The Minister of Immigration said the rule was put in place to prevent migrant exploitation, which is an issue New Zealand has been dealing with for several years, and which appears to be getting worse. However, some commentators here believe upping the English language requirement - like Australia did - does little to prevent exploitation happening."

The current government, she added, was elected on a pro-immigration platform and usually had the support of the business sector. "However, on this issue it might be different -  Business NZ, which represents the country's business sector, is wary of the changes (not just the enhanced English language but other changes that see paths to residency in certain sectors such as construction restricted)," she said.
