The official announcement regarding the MSC Opera was released back in October ; however, there wasn’t much detail other than “MSC Opera is on its way!”.

Personally, we tried to hunt this down for a cluster of readers who asked us for detail and struggled to make sense of it. The thinking was “it will get added to the Qatar2022.qa/book portal soon” but it never was…and, we’re here to tell you it never will!

How Much Does MSC Opera Cost Per Night

MSC Opera has availability for all kind of rooms, from traditional inside and ocean-view to balcony rooms and luxurious suites.

Do not glance at the site and run away! You’ll need to apply some filters to see the true prices and availability.

First, make the “ departure date ” = your first night’s stay . Do not put your check-in / check-out dates or you’ll be overwhelmed on the next step.

So if you plan to to travel Dec 2 to Dec 7, only select Dec 2 here.

Hit the “more filters” option to then select a # of night’s range and then you can even select type of room if you’re worried more about costs.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll now see options for your starting date + number of nights . That is, each option to book is showing you Start Date + # of Nights so you’ll see an option for 2 nights, 3 nights, etc. Find the number of nights you plan to stay from your starting date and proceed to book as you normally would.

How Do I Receive a Hayya w/ MSC Opera

Since you’re booking through a 3rd party application you’ll have to go into the Hayya Portal and apply via that method.

Is MSC Opera All-Inclusive?

Not quite. There’s 2 options: (1) Breakfast Only & (2) Full Board

Full Board comes with a dining package and allows breakfast / lunch / dinner during operating hours.

In general, lunch is 11:30 to 16:00 and dinner is 17:30 to 22:30.

Doha, November 19 (QNA) - The MSC Opera, the third cruise ship to serve as a "floating hotel" during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, has arrived at Doha Port.

MSC Opera will join MSC World Europa and MSC Poesia which arrived at Doha Port earlier, to offer a luxurious hospitality experience to fans of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

MSC Opera is a modern floating hotel offers luxurious services to World Cup fans with a variety of room options ranging from traditional cabins overlooking the sea to rooms with balconies and luxury suites, in addition to multiple dining possibilities and programs and entertainment for all ages.

At 275m in length and 32m in width, the 13-deck MSC Opera can accommodate nearly 2,679 people with 1,075 rooms.

Floating hotels are one of several facilities provided by the State of Qatar for fans of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, offering multiple booking and accommodation options throughout the tournament, including apartments, villas, fan villages and usual hotels.

HE Chairman of Qatar Tourism and Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker affirmed in statements yesterday that offering accommodation and recreational services on board floating hotels reflects the strenuous efforts exerted to organize the best World Cup in history.

According to the estimates of the MSC Cruises Group, owner of the three floating hotels that will serve the tournament, the capacity of the three cruise ships reach 10,000 beds, and reservations for the first week of the World Cup have reached 100%.

The cooperation between Qatar and MSC Cruises dates back to 2016, when Doha welcomed the Group's first giant cruise ship, MSC Fantasia. (QNA)

MSC Cruises has confirmed that they will deploy MSC Opera as a floating hotel in Doha for the duration of 2022’s football World Cup.

Looking for unique accommodation in Qatar, to enjoy the calm before the score? You can now reserve a room aboard MSC Opera – operated by Geneva-based MSC Cruises – for the duration of the FIFA World Cup 2022 (20 November – 18 December). The 1075-cabin cruise ship will dock in Doha and act as a floating hotel from 19 November through to 20 December. A variety of cabin options are available, and travellers can opt to book with breakfast only, or full board with a drinks package.

Alcohol will be served

Working in cooperation with Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, accommodation is booked on conditions of a two-night minimum, and alcohol is expected to be available onboard with MSC serving wine and draft beer.

Qatar typically limits the consumption of alcohol strictly to luxury hotels, but this rule has been eased for FIFA’s commercial partners.

MSC Opera is the third ship hired by the Qatari government to operate as a floating hotel in Doha Port, adding much-needed rooms for the tournament.

Why is Qatar using floating hotels?

Qatar’s infrastructure cannot offer the accommodation required for all teams, employees, volunteers, and fans, throughout the event. There simply aren't enough hotel rooms to facilitate the incoming crowd. Organisers have therefore sought alternative means to provide lodgings - creating camping and cabin sites, hiring cruise ships, and encouraging fans to stay in neighbouring countries. History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples . It was established in 1960. Today, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) - the world's 2nd largest containership company . MSC Crociere is the world's largest privately-owned cruise company.

MSC Opera staterooms (1071 total, in 8 grades) include 28 Suites, 204 Balcony, 401 Oceanview and 438 Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 140 ft2 / 13 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 40 ft2 / 4 m2. The largest are the Balcony Suites (250 ft2 / 24 m2 plus 55 ft2 / 5 m2 terrace). The ship has only 5 wheelchair-accessible cabins (type Inside).

It features tables for two to six diners. The casual buffet is located on Deck 11 and provides an alternative to the main dining rooms.

Itineraries

MSC Opera itinerary program is based on cruises to Cuba. The ship offers 7-days Caribbean itineraries roundtrip from Havana (two nights), with feature port destinations Montego Bay Jamaica , George Town (Grand Cayman Island) and Cozumel Mexico . In July 2015, MSC announced that due to rising demand the company will homeport the ship in Havana for 2016-2017 winter season. From November 2016, a second liner ( MSC Armonia ) joined Opera for the entire season.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the MSC ship Opera was paused for 2+ years (between March 2020 and April 2022), restarting operations on April 24 (Mediterranean from Genoa). Opera's Arabian/Red Sea 2021-2022 program (from Dubai) was canceled as well as the winter 2024-2025 program, the latter being replaced with a Canary Islands deployment.

In the Canaries, MSC Opera had scheduled 7-night itineraries (November 3, 2024, through March 16, 2025) visiting 6 call ports. Departing roundtrip from Santa Cruz de Tenerife , the ship visits  Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ,  Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) ,  Funchal (Madeira) ,  Santa Cruz de la Palma , and  Arrecife (Lanzarote) before returning back to Tenerife. MSC's new Canary Islands itinerary offers flexible homeporting options allowing boarding in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Sundays), Las Palmas (Mondays), Madeira (Thursdays or Fridays) and Arrecife (Saturdays).

MSC Opera Wiki

The vessel (Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number L32) has volume 65591 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 8707 tons, max draught 7 m. The powerplant is based on Wartisla marine diesel engines (model 12V38) with combined output 31,68 MW (42480 hp). The registered shipowner is NEWCO OPERA SA, while the registered manager is MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.

Opera is MSC's 4th and last Lirica-class liner, with sisterships Armonia ,  Lirica ,  Sinfonia . In 2015, the MSC ship Opera was stretched/elongated by 25 m (82 ft) during a  drydock refit  done at Fincantieri's shipyard in  Palermo Sicily . During the dry-dock (between May 2 and July 4), the vessel was cut in two and a pre-built section was inserted midship.  Ship's reconstruction project was part of MSC's USD 273 million "Renaissance Program", by which besides Opera were also enlarged the sisterships Armonia, Lirica, and Sinfonia.

MSC Opera refurbishment 2015 review

The ship's last drydock was in March 2022 (at Port Valletta 's Palumbo Malta Shipyard).

The vessel was majorly refitted and refurbished in 2015 (dry-dock between May 2 and July 4). There are substantial deck plan changes following the project since the cruise ship was stretched (elongated by 25 m / 82 ft). The list of deckplan changes after the refurbishment includes:

• All cruise cabins were renovated and upgraded as amenities.
• A total of 197 new cruise cabins and suites (of which 30 with balconies) were added (on decks 9-Norma, 10-Turandot, 12-La Boheme) plus 59 new crew cabins.
• New stateroom categories were introduced.
• An Aqua Park (named Spray Park, with waterfalls and interactive slides) was installed.
• All boutique shops were upgraded (new designs).
• A new luxury perfumes shop was added.
• The supervised kids' clubs and play areas were upgraded with equipment and toys by Chicco and LEGO.

The boat's passenger capacity was increased from 1712 (max 2000) to 2142 (max 2570).

The 10-week drydock was valued at nearly EUR 50 million. 

Cuba cruise itineraries 2016-2017

In July 2015, MSC announced that the Opera ship will be homeported in  Havana Cuba . Starting on December 22 (2015), the ship operated during the winter season (2015-2016) a total of 16 roundtrip 7-night Caribbean cruises from Cuba.

• Destination ports of call list include Mexico (Cozumel /2-night stay), Jamaica (Montego Bay), Grand Cayman (George Town) and Havana (2-night stay).
• MSC also offered Caribbean fly-cruise deals from Europe (Spain, Italy, France, Germany), also from USA, Canada and South America (Brazil, Argentina).
• MSC Opera's originally scheduled for 2015 Canary Islands cruises (also including Madeira Island and Morocco) were canceled. All booked passengers received full refunds or re-booked on alternative MSC Mediterranean itineraries with compensations onboard credit or cabin upgrades. Those who re-booked to Cuba with fly-cruise deals received a flight discount (fixed fee EUR 285 per person).
• MSC's local partner is Cubanacan Group (hotel chain).
• Another MSC ship with scheduled for 2016-2017 itineraries to Havana was  MSC Armonia .
• With Opera, MSC became the world's first major cruise line to homeport a big-sized ship in Cuba.
• Opera's first cruise out of Havana left on December 22, 2015, following the Transatlantic repositioning to Cuba from Genoa Italy (December 2-21).
• On April 12, 2016, MSC Opera left Havana for a Transatlantic cruise to Europe (ending in Warnemunde-Rostock Germany  on May 7).

Johannesburg, South Africa, 10 October 2022 - MSC Cruises today opened sales for its 2023-24 sailing season featuring its most modern ship to serve South Africa, MSC Splendida.

The 14-deck passenger vessel can accommodate up to 4,363 passengers and features for the first time in South Africa, the MSC Yacht Club – a premium ‘ship within a ship’ concept with 71 spacious suites, a dedicated concierge desk, 24-hour butler service, private restaurant, swimming pool and sunbathing area.

MSC Splendida will be based from November 2023 in the port of Durban and offer a range of voyages that last between 3 and 14 nights to Namibia and Mozambique. MSC Cruises will in total operate 35 sailings of MSC Splendida from both Durban and Cape Town during 2023-24.
