Despite requests from all over the world,  Nana Mouskouri  has decided to present her only concert tour of 2024 in Canada. Since 1965, Nana has left a significant footprint on Canadian culture. Her affection for our country has inspired her to record and perform many classic Canadian compositions. A unique chance to see this Great Lady of Song. Nana's special guest,  Adam Fisher , has been featured in Lasting Impressions, performing a moving version of Vincent (Starry Starry Night) .

Nana Mouskouri says farewell with final Athens concert

Nana Mouskouri took her last bow after 50 years in music Thursday with a farewell concert in her native Greece.

An estimated audience of 10,000 people filled the ancient Odeon of Horodes Atticus at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens to hear her final concert.

Mouskouri, 73, announced her plans to retire three years ago and has completed a worldwide tour.

"I have been known to sing in a certain way and my fear is to lose this way of singing which will disappoint a lot of people," said Mouskouri, explaining her retirement to Reuters.

"It's not that I abandon singing or that I will never sing again in my life anywhere now, but I will not go on tours anymore. I don't want to have this fear all the time when you go on stage, this stage fright."

On Wednesday, in the first of two concerts in Athens, Mouskouri wore her trademark black glasses and a red dress and sang from her wide repertoire.

Mouskouri has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, and is one of the world's best-selling artists.

Born in Crete, she sings in French, English, German, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Hebrew and Japanese, her record company Universal says.

Mouskouri trained as a singer in Athens and sang in her first Greek music festival at 25.

Since then she has recorded 1,500 songs and toured with artists such as Harry Belafonte.

Her life has been a "fairy tale," she said, and the farewell tour was a way to express her gratitude to her legions of fans.

"This tour was the opportunity to say thank you to the people," she said.

"I wouldn't really go without saying thank you because, thanks to the audience, I have been around for so many years because they listen to me."

Mouskouri, who has been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, said she now wants to involve herself more closely with humanitarian causes. She may also mentor young singers.

Nana Mouskouri is not only one of the most eminent voices in Greek pop and world music, she is a leader in humanitarian issues and an advocate for international dialogue.

She has now reached the ripe old age of 79 and has had a recording career spanning aver fifty years in which she has released a staggering 450 albums, achieving a ground-shaking 350 million in sales. Her swooning, celestial, pan-continental music has been recorded with lyrics in French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Hebrew, Welsh, Mandarin, and Turkish, as well as English and her native Greek.

Her affecting crooning is based on her affinity to the greats, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

She has been Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF, focusing her energies on the disastrous effects inflicted on the Bosnian population by the Yugoslav Serbs during the Bosnian War in the early half of the 1990s. A great concert good to see Nana Mouskouri again that was the fourth Nana Mouskouri concert I have been to the first two were at the Odeon Golders green in north London back in the 70s I also attended her 80 birthday tour at the Royal Albert Hall. it was good to the Royal Festival Hill looking so full with all her fans Hall a great singer I love listening to her singing thank you, Nana, for a great concert

The show was great, we saw her already many times and she never changes. I can't believe how she can do that. It was really a great concert.

Congratulations to Nana. The place "Roma" is a terrible place, no numberd seats and a long time before the doors open. There are so much more nice places in Antwerp, why chosse for "Roma.

Excellent concert by this legendary lady. 83 years old and over 2 hours without intermission. Small but great backup group. Sings from new to old everything. Songs from the 1930’s until today. In minimum 5 languages. Wonderful evening.

It was a magical concert. I went to heaven and stayed there for a while. She sang hser most beautiful songs in Spanish, English and French. One of the concert I've loved the most.

She's the greatest !!!

She was awesome, I realize she is 80 years old and struggled a bit with her voice, but it is still there and amazing. My daughter and I were enthralled, what a legend, an amazing woman.

Great show, she still has an amazing voice. We had a wonderfull evening. Even a song in dutch, and so many other languages. At The end she just kept on going.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
