Brazil has a lot to offer for those of you wishing to move to the area. One third of the world’s species can be found in the country. There is a huge amount of cultural diversity, with people from all over the world making Brazil their home. With vibrant festivals, beautiful beaches and amazing scenery it could be the perfect new home for you and your pet.

Brazil Pet Import

For pet entry into Brazil your pet needs to have up to date rabies vaccinations at least 30 days before the flight and no more than 11 months and a certificate of health issued by a government vet within 72 hours of the flight.

Your pet will need to have a vaccination certificate to confirm that they have had a rabies vaccine. This vaccination needs to be valid for at least a year.

On arrival in Brazil, pets attract very large customs fees. Unless you are a returning Brazilian national or you have a work visa to work in Brazil. You are very highly advised to use the services of an agent in Brazil, who will be able to advise and negotiate these customs fees down as far as possible, but also negotiate the clearance of your pet as quickly as possible. At Petair UK. We work with agents all over the world and we can advise an agent for you or we can work with your own agent.

Flying to Brazil with Dogs: A Step by Step Guide

Brazil is the land of samba, caipirinhas, and sandy beaches. It’s a country exploding in color, culture, and heat. We spent six weeks in Brazil with our two pups and can’t wait to return. Besides being an amazing destination for human travelers, it’s also incredibly dog friendly.

Big cities, like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, are packed with dogs, pet stores, and groomers, and that combined with great weather and plenty of outdoor activities makes it an unbeatable destination for you and your dog.

So grab your pup, jump on a plane, and head to one of the most magical countries in the world. Here is our guide to bringing your dog to Brazil and flying in cabin. We’re sharing it step by step, so you can go too!

Update: Effective July 14, 2021, the CDC temporarily suspended (stopped) dog imports from countries classified as high-risk for rabies. Unfortunately Brazil is on the list of countries classified as high-risk for rabies. This will make things much more difficult if you’re planning to travel to/from Brazil with your dog.

Step 1: Country Requirements

The first step is always to check your destination country’s requirements to see if they’re doable. Be sure to start this process early, so you have enough time to get everything done without scrambling. We checked Brazil’s policy for entering the country with pets, and then double checked the information on their government website. Then, we triple checked by calling our local consulate. The internet is a great source of information, but websites aren’t always up to date, and policies can change at any time. We like to get verbal confirmation before we start the process so we’re 100% sure of things and don’t waste time. Better safe than sorry!

To enter Brazil, we would need an International health certificate, issued 10 days before departure by a licensed veterinarian and endorsed by the USDA.  We would also need a valid rabies vaccination and acknowledgment of treatment against internal and external parasites 15 days prior to travel (such as Heartworm medication). That’s it!

Remember:  It’s important to stay organized throughout, and to keep a record of everything you’ll need to enter the country. Make additional hard copies of all of your documents and store them in a special folder, and keep digital copies on your phone. These simple moves will save you time and energy when traveling.

If you're traveling from Brazil to the USA with a dog or cat, this guide is for you! See each required step to bring your pet to the USA.

Step 2: Make Travel Arrangements

Since the health certificate is contingent on departure date, we’d need a confirmed date before moving forward. Check airline policies and look up flights. Decide how your pet’s going to fly , and which method works for you. If there’s an airline you’ve flown before with your dog and liked, see if they go to Brazil. We fly American Airlines a lot with our two pups, and have only had positive experiences.

Choose a flight, purchase your ticket and call the airline; it’s important to contact the airline with your flight information, since many companies limit the number of pets allowed on board.

Next, find carrier requirements for flying in cabin. Be sure your pets bag fits requirements and will be accepted on the air craft.

Step 3: Call the Vet

Once your date is confirmed, you’ll need to call your vet. Speak to them about your travel plans, the requirements, and set up an appointment. If your dog has a valid rabies vaccine, schedule your appointment for 8 – 10 days before your departure date. If they don’t, you’ll need to get a vaccine at least 21 days before departure.

Our dogs were up to date on rabies, so we scheduled an appointment 9 days prior to leaving. Make sure to ask your vet if they can provide the international health certificate, or if you should bring a copy yourself. Done and done.

Step 4: Vet Visit

Our vet visit went great! The vet checked over our dogs, and checked off on treatment against internal and external parasites, since we give our dogs Frontline and Heartworm medicine. She filled out the health certificate, and gave us the green light on travel. All good!

Step 5: USDA Endorsement

Next, our health certificated needed to be endorsed by the USDA . That means they would need to review our documents and stamp them. We used FedEx to overnight the following:

  • Rabies vaccination certificate
  • PRE-PAID return label
  • Pet Export Checklist

It’s important to make a copy of all documents before mailing them and to keep a record of your tracking numbers. We sent the documents on a Thursday, and they were returned to us by Saturday.

Important Things to Note:

*USDA processing times vary, and offices are closed on weekends and national holidays. Get your documents in as soon as possible.

*If you are overnighting your documents, ask the carrier about weekend deliveries. You will typically have to sign off on them.

*You can either submit your documents via mail or in person, if a USDA office or affiliate office is close enough. Find the  location  that governs your state and give them a call.

Step 6:  Flight Day

A picture of boogie the pug in his carrier waiting to board a flight.

Our flight was late at night, so we spent the day making sure the dogs got plenty of exercise so they’d be nice and sleepy for the flight. We gave them a small dinner four hours before the flight, and headed to the airport early. Give yourself plenty of time at the airport to check in and go through security. The gate agent reviewed our documents and carrier, and we were good to go.

Step 7: Arrival Check

Dog in Airport

When we landed, we went through immigration, grabbed our bags, and were motioned towards an area to get checked by a health inspector. A Brazilian officer looked over both dogs, checked our documents and made copies of them. She filled out some entry forms and gave us copies before sending us on our way.

Welcome to Brazil!

First of all, great post and it helped me a lot as I am looking to take my dog to Brazil with me. Second, what is the process/requirements to return to the US with the dogs? Thank you

Hi! Thanks for reading. The health certificate from the USA is valid for 60 days (2 months) from the date of issue. So, if you’re returning to the USA within 2 months of entering Brazil, you can use the same paperwork. Here’s the official statement on the health certificate:

“This international Veterinary Certificate is valid for sixty (60) days from the date of issue for entering or returning to the MERCOSUR party countries, as long as the rabies vaccination is valid.”

Enjoy Brazil. 🙂

Thanks so much for this critical information. It has been most useful. I am so glad I found your blog. We have followed your steps and are about 11 days away from our trip to Sao Paulo, Brasil. The only thing I found today that is a bit concerning, and I am not sure if this is something new, is the requirement to get back to the US. It seems the CDC requires a certificate that validates that our dog does not have or has not gotten screwworm while in Brasil. Was this something that you saw was asked for when you traveled with your dogs?

I sent an email to the USDA and they said that it is a requirement and that I did have to make arrangements in Sao Paulo to see a vet and give our dog the clearance. However, it almost make no logical sense since we will be there for only 10 days, and they requirement is to do the certification within 5 days of traveling into the US. Regardless, I replied back asking them if the certification only needed to be signed/certified by the vet and not by an official institution (such as the department of agriculture of Brasil), and if it needed to be translated and certified into English. At that point they replied saying that I needed to reach out to CDC and find out about these requirements with them.

My wife is a bit nervous about this, since we have everything else ready (have appointment with vet tomorrow to get our health cert and mail it to USDA), but this particular certification would be a hassle to get done in Brasil since we don’t know any vets there and not sure if they would even be able to accommodate us in such short notice.

Any insight about how things went when you got back state-side would be greatly appreciated; specially if they asked for any additional documentation or certificates.

Thanks a million for this awesome blog and for all the information you have provided to all of us fur-parents. 🙂

Hi Gilbert,

Thanks for reading! I’m glad you found it helpful.

I’m interested to know where you found that CDC requirement. I’ve never heard of it before. Can you send me a link? You can contact me at [email protected] .

I don’t want to give you a definitive answer (policies are always changing), but here’s what I think. If you have your vet fill out the USDA Brazil form ( found here ), you’ll see at the bottom that it’s valid for 60 days. You should be able to use this same form to re-enter the United States. I have done this myself (used this form, and gone to/from the USA to Brazil within 60 days).

Thank you so much for your reply. The CDC requirement is listed on the USDA website. Here is the link: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel/bring-pet-into-the-united-states/pet-travel-dogs-into-us

We are in Brazil already (In Sao Paulo), and everything getting out of the US was a breeze. We had no issues whatsoever. However, when we landed here in Sao Paulo, the representative for the department of Agriculture took our International Health Certificate away and said we had to follow some instructions to submit a request for a new Health Certificate online at least 5 days prior to our travel day. So we called the department of Agriculture to find out why the International Health Certificate that we brought (which they kept at the airport) is not valid to reuse to travel back. They said that the certificate is only valid for one use and that we have to submit a requests for a new one from Brazil. The worst part is that we have to get a new health certificate from a veterinary here in Brazil which obviously makes this more difficult.

I submitted the request online with just the copy of the International Health Certificate we brought from the US, in the hopes that they approve it. If they don’t, then we would have to go see a veterinary and do all that all over again.

Just wanted to update you and your readers about our experience so far. We are truly thankful for your information as it helped us get everything in order to travel out of the US. Now we are crossing our fingers that we don’t have to re-do this process all over in Brazil.

Hope this helps… I will keep you posted on how everything ends up.

Thank you for the follow up! How stressful, I hope you are given the new Health Certificate online so you don’t have to visit a vet. Glad you have copies of everything, and that leaving the US was smooth! I have never heard that health certificates can only be used once (I have used many for entering and exiting).

Interested to hear about what happens, please keep us updated! Best of luck.

I am planning my trip to visit Brazil in December. I found you comments super helpful because I would not know about this if it weren’t for you. Were you able to get a new International Health Certificate without repeating the entire process in Brazil? How did everything go?

Hopefully, you were able to come back to the US smoothly with your dog and enjoyed your trip!

Hello Kennia,

I am so sorry it took so long to respond. I hope I am not too late since you said you were traveling in December. Here is the short of it, and then I will go into more detail after for those who like reading longer, more detailed posts:

We DID have to go to the Vet in Brazil. I am not sure if this is new, or if it is specific to Sao Paulo, but no matter what we did, and how many times we contacted the department of agriculture at the airport, they told us that without an international health certificate from Brazil, our dog was not going to be able to board the plane. So, we ended up going to my mother-in-law’s dog’s vet, who was very nice and helped us by providing not only the International Health Cert, but did a full check on our dog (included on the cost) and gave her a clean bill of health in writing so we can add it to our documentation. Luckily we had all the copies of all the documents we used for the one we got in the US, because that had the names of the vaccines they gave our dog and the vet in Brazil was able to enter that information in the new health cert.

As you can imagine, other than the LaTam representative at the check-in desk took a quick look at the paperwork (didn’t really read it, just skimmed through it I guess looking for dates and signatures), and then handed it back to us. NO ONE ELSE asked for the darn paper until we got into the US. Funny enough, I asked the gentleman that checked the paperwork if the original Health Cert we received in the US would have sufficed, and he said “as long as it is within those 60 days, then you are fine. However, he did mention that lately, people coming from Brazil have been bringing the new one filled out by a Brazilian vet. Hopefully this is helpful to you, Kennia.

This change in our plans was very frustrating due to the fact that we had to pay more money, make appointments, travel to the vet, spend time at the vet (literally almost 4 hours), for a piece of paper that no one in Brazil cared to verify, and specially after finding out from the US customs agents that we could have used the original one to re-enter. However, this is not the US jurisdiction. Brazil, as a sovereign country has the right to change its policies and do as they please. They are actually proud of the fact that they are not allowing dogs travel out of Brazil with any illnesses or parasites (which I guess is a good thing). In the end, my wife and I just wanted to make sure that our dog returned home with us, so we did whatever it took, and it really only took half a day of our travel plans to take care of this. The online form is easy to fill out and quick, but you do need a Brazilian’s CPF (which is kind of like their State ID/Tax ID) in order to fill out the form. If you don’t know anyone in Brazil, then I suggest you do not travel with your dog. You WILL need the CPF. There is no way around it.

So, to summarize, these are the steps we took to bring our dog back from Brazil and into the US:

1) Call local vets in Brazil, or have someone you know where you are visiting to call vets that know how to fill out the International Health Certificate form (You can get the form from the website listed on the little paper they give you at the airport). 2) When you find one that knows how to do it (VERY IMPORTANT: they need to KNOW, KNOW, not “I think we can figure it out), make an appointment within 5 to 3 days before your flight as long as it is not a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. If you are flying on a Monday/Tuesday, I suggest you do it on the morning of the Thursday before, the latest. If you are flying on a Wednesday/Thursday/Friday, then weekend appointment is fine since they will have Monday and Tuesday to get your certified document ready. 3) On the day of the appointment, bring all the copies of your dog’s documents, including the copy of the International Health cert you brought from the US. This document is pretty much the same as the one they will give you and it will contain important information regarding the mandatory vaccines your dog needs to take. IMPORTANT: To enter the US, you ONLY need the rabbies cert and an internal and external antiparasitic (my dog received the ProHeart and Drontal Plus for internal in the US, and the Bravecto for external also in the US). They did not have to re-do any of the Internal, but the external had to be redone. 4) Make sure to double and triple check all the information on the International Health Certificate for accuracy. You’d be surprised how many times the vet had to print it for us because of misspellings. 5) Make sure the vet signs the certificate and enters their license number. 6) Have the vet provide a visit summary providing information about the health of the dog, and giving it a good bill of health. This is needed for the online form. 7) After leaving the Vet, go to a place that can scan (and make copies if you want to be extra cautious) all the documents you will need to upload (the new Health Cert, the Clean bill of health and your Rabbies cert). 8) Using that little paper they gave to you at the airport after they took your original International Health Certificate, go to the website listed, and fill out the form. IMPORTANT: The website is in Portuguese. 9) You will need to enter a Brazilian’s CPF ID in order to start the process. 10) Upload all necessary documents, and submit the form. 11) Check the status periodically by going to the website. Once they have completed their process, you will be able to download and print the new Health Cert. IMPORTANT: Don’t be discouraged if they don’t approve at first, it happened to us, I just uploaded the wrong document in one of the sections of the form. They explain to you the reason why it wasn’t approve and give you a chance to just fix the issue and re-submit the form. 12) Print the Cert, attach to all your other documents (most importantly the rabbies cert) and you are good to come back with your fur child(ren) into the US.

Once we got to the US, they did make us wait a bit, but once we went through the process, everything was as normal as normal can get. They barely even looked at our dog. The guys just lifted her gums and felt her around her hind legs, and that was that.

If you have any other questions, reach out to my email, and I will be more than happy to answer.

Again, sorry for the delay in response, and hope I am not too late. Safe and happy travels with your wonderful fur child(ren).

Hey there! Do u have any advice on kernel brands that are accepted by American Airlines?that would be helpful!thanks

hi my pets will fly to brasil in cargo, anybody knows how long should be my connection at the air port ?ex: I arrive at 8:35 am my connection might be 10:20 is that to short to pic em up from cargo and move on to my next connection?

Just to confirm your last comment and reply, if I am returning to the US within 60 days, do I need to go back to the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry at the airport in advance of my return flight to get the doc certified? When I moved from Brazil to the US years ago, I had to go to the Ministry 3 days before my flight and it was a huge pain in the rear. If I understand your comment, I can just show up at the Sao Paulo airport with the same docs I used to enter, correct?

Hi! If you are entering Brazil from the USA, and have an endorsed health certificate, you can use the same documents to re-enter the USA if you leave Brazil within a period of 2 months (check the dates because they won’t give you a day extra!). We stayed for 6 weeks and did not require new documents. Contact the Brazilian embassy to double and triple check – always worth it!

Hi! How did you find a company that accepts brachycephalic dogs? So far a bunch of airlines that I visited the website say they don’t allow it because of breathing problems. Including American Airlines, that you say in your post has a big NO list for these breeds. And how did your pup behave? It’ll be my first time flying with a dog and and I’m really nervous for what I’ve been reading so far

Hi Nat! Companies are changing their policies all the time, especially when it comes to flying with pets. Be sure you are looking at the requirements when it comes to in cabin (and not in cargo or as checked baggage).

Boogie behaves very well on flights! I suggest practicing with your pup beforehand. Make sure they are used to their travel bag and see it as a safe and cozy space. There are more tips on the blog (see h ere ). Good luck!

Hi, are translations of the paperwork required to take my pet to Brazil? Also, did you travel directly to your destination or did you have to get another flight to your city? I am taking a flight with Gol from Sao Paulo to Salvador, once I reach Sao Paulo from the US, and apparently, they don’t accept taking pets when you buy the flight as a package between two airlines. Do you have any experience with that?

Hi! No, I did not get the paperwork translated. Yes, I did travel directly. If you’re not traveling directly and switching airlines, make sure both airlines will accept your pet and your paperwork! If I don’t fly direct, I try to stick with the same airline on all legs so the rules stay the same.

Excellent post and it helped me tremendously. I will fly out to Brazil in two weeks. Wish me luck!

Good luck and safe travels!

Thanks for sharing this! I’m about to fly with my pug from Argentina to the US. We have all the paperwork in place and have been authorized by the airline to make the trip. Do you have any tips for keeping your pug happy during the flight? You said you fed him about four hours before taking off. Did that work out well? Our get in Argentina recommended not feeding ours for at least 8 hours before flying. Not sure it makes any difference. Also, did Boogie ever bark or get nervous during the flight? Finally, my vet said it’s dangerous to sedate pugs but she recommended giving our little guys some “homeopathic drops” to keep him calm. I’m hesitant to do even that. Have you ever heard of drops like that? Thanks again!

I’m happy the post was helpful. In terms of flying with your pug, I have plenty of tips on my Pug Stuff page. I also do not sedate my pug, but I have used CBD treats to keep him calm. My biggest tips are: fly with a tired pug (a long walk or trip to a park before the flight, so when they board they are super sleepy) and to make sure to use the pet relief station before boarding (check your departure airport to see where they’re located in the airport).

Let me know how it goes! Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for sharing! Were you able to bring dog food into Brazil or did you have to buy there?

Hi William,

We brought dog treats, but not dog food (we make our own dog food).

Hello, great info. I read at the beggining of the article that the IHC is the only requered document to enter Brazil and it has to be endorsed by the USDA. Then at the end on Step 5 on the first item you described a Rabies Vaccination Certificate, are they the same? CAn you please clarify? I am leaving in a couple of weeks. Thanks!!!

Hi Cristina,

At the beginning of the article, it says the following, “To enter Brazil, we would need an International health certificate, issued 10 days before departure by a licensed veterinarian and endorsed by the USDA. We would also need a valid rabies vaccination and acknowledgment of treatment against internal and external parasites 15 days prior to travel (such as Heartworm medication). That’s it!”

Hope this helps!

Hi! Article is very helpful we are looking to move to Brazil for a few months. I fly American Airlines as well and their website says carry on dogs are not allowed to/from Brazil. Do your dogs fly as emotional support animals or do you think this is an old or very new policy?

Hi Jimmy! This is a new policy from American Airlines. It’s a bummer for sure! A way around it is to fly with a layover, so the dogs are allowed on both flights.

Follow up question to this, my girlfriend has a service dog for hearing. Is that consider a service dog in Brazil or is only guide dogs consider service dogs in Brazil? Also can we travel with thisnservice dog in the cabin?

Hi all! Thanks so much for the info, any updates on the new AA rules in Jan? Also does the AA rules apply to their affiliates, LATAM? Any tips on Emotional Support pups that aren’t lap size? Say… 50 lbs? Thanks so much.

On the Health certificate where it asks “place of origin” and “port of embarkment” what is that referring to exactly? Thankyou

I agree with every factor that you have pointed out. Thank you for sharing your beautiful thoughts on this.

I would like to thank you guys very much for the valuable informations found here in the blog. I was able to travel successfully with my Yorkshire Terrier from Orlando to Rio de Janeiro and safe travel back too. I went to Rio in May, 2021. A lot of pandemic rules and bans was in place at these days. So I will write about some updates and procedures I had to pass through in order to help you guys:

STEP 1: Call your airline in order to verify if you can travel with your dog. I flew American Airlines and my Yorkshire Terrier travelled on my lap. (No additional fees. It is a service dog)

STEP 2: Get all the USDA documentation from a USDA certified veterinarian while you are in the US (there are specific dates – make sure you do everything in the right time)

STEP 3 – When you arrive at Brazil, they will retain most of your USDA documents. You won’t be able to reuse them to travel back to the US.

STEP 4 – Find a veterinarian in Brazil able to issue the travel documents to your pet in order to travel back to the US. I found a veterinarian in Rio de Janeiro that gave me everything I needed. It was not expensive (350 reais – about 60 US dollars for the documents. You will have to buy some exterior/interior medications apart). Make sure to ask for the “english” versions of the forms too. A good vet will provide everything.

STEP 5 – Just present these documents at the airline checkin. They will review the documents and allow you to fly with your dog.

No one else asked for these documents when we arrived in the US.

Hi, did you have to pay any customs/import fees when bringing the pugs? I’m having to fly my dog as cargo (long story).

What was your customs process?

No we did not, however both of our dogs flew in cabin. I am not sure if there is a charge for cargo.

Hi! Has anyone fly from us to Brazil recently? I am planing to go in December and was looking for some updates. Thanks

+1 traveling in December and it seems only Avianca and Copa allow dogs in the main cabin at this moment right?

I’m looking to do the same with my service dog, would love updates if anyone replies here as well!!

Travelling with pets

We know your pets are part of your family, which is why we treat every animal who flies with us like a VIP.

British Airways flights

Emotional support dogs

British Airways is unable to accept emotional support dogs for travel in the cabin on any British Airways operated flights. Your emotional support dog can travel as a pet and details on how to arrange this can be found below.

Service dogs

If you’re travelling with a recognised service dog, it can travel with you free of charge in the cabin of your British Airways flight. This service cannot be booked online and we might need to limit the number of dogs we can carry in the cabin.

From the UK

We’ve partnered with PetAir UK, which is run and owned by fully-qualified veterinary surgeons and has been flying pets all over the world since 2004, to offer British Airways customers a safe, comfortable and convenient way to export their pets from the UK.

If you are looking to transport your pet to the UK, our sister company IAG Cargo can help. They have decades of experience transporting animals from every corner of the globe and will look after your pet as if it were their own.

Pet Travel Scheme

If you're entering the UK, your dog must meet the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme offered by the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA). It allows cats and dogs to travel between some countries and UK airports avoiding quarantine.

If you're travelling to a different country, please check with the relevant embassy or consulate for any regulations or restrictions.

SUN-AIR flights

SUN-AIR is our franchise partner operating flights within Europe under the British Airways brand. As on British Airways operated flights, recognised service dogs are allowed in the cabin, as well as other pets up to 6kg.

  • Other pets must be transported in a waterproof bag or cage, with maximum dimensions of 20 x 30 x 20cm (7.5 x 11.5 x 7.5in).
  • It is the owners’ responsibility to ensure that all documentation and animal passports are in order before departure.
  • SUN-AIR permits one pet on board each aircraft at one time.

Please contact the SUN-AIR ticket office on +45 75 33 16 11 no later than 72 hours before departure if you wish to bring your pet on a SUN-AIR operated flight. Please note that pets are not permitted on SUN-AIR flights to the United Kingdom.

Moving to Brazil with a pet

pet

If you're planning to travel or relocate to Brazil , the Brazilian government allows you to bring your dog or cat into the country, and there's no quarantine period. However, you'll need to supply the proper documentation. Also, you'll need to make arrangements with your airline. The importation of animals other than cats and dogs must be approved in advance by Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply.

Documentation

For your dog or cat to be allowed entry into Brazil , you must produce the following two documents:

  • A certification of vaccination against rabies. Pets under three months old don't need a rabies vaccination, and neither do pets that come from a country that's considered rabies-free.
  • An International Health Certificate for Personal Pets. Many countries have such certificates. If the country you are departing from does not, here's an example from the US Department of Agriculture, Animal, and Plant Health Inspection Service .

Once you have the Health Certificate, you should immediately go to the Brazilian Consulate serving your jurisdiction to get it validated. There will be a small fee for this. Don't lose any time getting this done, as the Health Certificate will only be valid for ten (10) days after the exam was performed by the veterinarian. So you need to plan to handle all of the necessary steps in the days immediately before your departure.

You should visit the official Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture website for current details and alerts. Note that information is provided both for entry into Brazil and for departure from Brazil. The site is currently available only in Portuguese, so enlist assistance if needed.

Travel conditions

Different airlines have different rules for how pets are handled. For example, some may accept only cats and dogs, and certain breeds may be excluded. There will also be specifications regarding the accepted type of carrier, which usually corresponds with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards. Smaller pets may travel in the cabin as hand luggage, while other pets must travel with the checked baggage. You're advised to speak with the airline directly before confirming your flight arrangements and booking yourself online. Be sure that you understand all the applicable rules to avoid any unpleasant surprises on your departure day.

Offer your pet food and water before the flight. The airline may ask you to attest that you have. And make sure that water's also available in your pet's carrier.

Returning home with your pet

If you'll be returning to your home country with your pet, you should inquire as to what documentation will be required to accomplish this. Obviously, different countries will have different regulations, so you'll need to verify what your home country will require when you wish to repatriate with your pet.

In fact, it'd be a good idea to make these inquiries before departing for Brazil, to ensure that there will be no unpleasant surprises down the road. In particular, ask what type of certification might be required and if there will be a quarantine period when you return. Also, ask if there might be restrictions on where your pet may travel while in Brazil.

Formal regulations pertain only to the importation of cats and dogs. If you have any other type of pet, you must contact the Ministry of Agriculture in advance for approval. Your nearest Brazilian Consulate may also be able to assist you.

Prepare for flying with a pet in cabin on international flights.

1. select an appropriate, cabin-approved travel carrier..

As mentioned above, different airlines and aircrafts have different size restrictions for carriers. Be sure to check the restrictions for your specific airline, and aircraft.

For example, Delta recommends a soft-sided kennel with maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11” since this fits most aircraft types.

We would recommend using a soft sided carrier as they usually give your pet more space.

2. Get your pet used to it’s travel carrier.

When flying with a pet in cabin, they will need to stay in its travel carrier for the duration of the journey. So, it’s very important that you spend some time to get your dog used to its travel carrier.

When first introducing your pet to its carrier, take it slow. Lure your dog into their carrier with plenty of treats, and let him/her play and sleep in there as much as possible. You want to avoid forcing your pet into the carrier as this may stress him or her out and may cause a negative association to the carrier.

3. Train your pet to stay calm.

Your pet will need to be calm and well behaved when flying in cabin. If they show disruptive behaviour, they risk being sent into the cargo area of the plane.

4. Exhaust your pet before the flight.

Try to exhaust your pet a little by increasing the level of activity before your trip. A sleepy pet will be less prone to getting stressed out on the flight, and will likely be better behaved on the flight.

5. Limit access to food and water before the flight.

When flying with a pet in cabin, your pet won’t be able to go potty. So, it’s a good idea to limit your pet’s access to food before the flight. Additionally, some animals may experience motion sickness if they eat just before a flight. If you are flying in the morning, then feed them the night before. Air Canada suggest feeding your dog four to six hours prior to departure, as a full stomach may cause discomfort during travel.

Line the bottom of your pet’s travel carrier with a pee pad, just incase they do have an accident.

6. Familiarise yourself with the airport that you are departing from and arriving to.

Most airports will have a dedicated area for pets and service animals to rest. It is actually a legal requirement that all U.S. airports have pet-relief areas available for working animals and pets to rest. Take some photos of the airport maps, so you don’t have to wander around on the day trying to find a resting place.

7. Bring along your pet’s favourite comforts.

To maximise comfort and minimise stress, pop your pet’s favourite blanket or toy in the travel carrier with them. If your pet suffers from separation anxiety, you could even pop one of your t-shirts in the carrier.

Which dog and cat breeds are not allowed in cabin on international flights?

Unfortunately, some airlines have restrictions on the dog and cat breeds they permit on their flights.

This is because of their anatomical abnormalities, short-nosed breeds may be more vulnerable to changes in air quality and temperature in the cargo hold of a plane.

Only certain airlines have these breed restrictions, so while you may not be able to fly with one airline, you may be able to fly with another. However, it’s important that you are confident your pet is healthy enough to fly.

The following brachycephalic and snub-nosed dog breeds are often not allowed in the cabin on international flights:

  • Affenpinscher
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Boston Terriers
  • Brussels Griffon
  • Bulldogs (all breeds)
  • Dogue De Bordeaux
  • English Toy Spaniel
  • Japanese Chin
  • Mastiff (all breeds)
  • Presa Canario
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • Tibetan Spaniel

The following brachycephalic and snub-nosed cat breeds are often not allowed in the cabin on international flights:

  • Burmese Cat
  • Exotic Shorthair Cat
  • Himalayan Cat
  • Persian Cat

Documents required for taking pets in cabin on international flights.

The documents required when flying with a pet in cabin will vary depending on which airline you are flying with, and where you are flying from and to.

You will need more paperwork when traveling internationally, in most cases you will usually require the following:

  • Microchip certificate
  • Rabies vaccination certificate
  • Animal health certificate
  • Additional vaccination certificates
  • Rabies titer test results
  • Parasite treatment certificate

a) Microchip.

Many airlines require microchip documents when flying with a dog or cat in cabin. Not only is it usually a requirement, it is in your best interest. If your pet was to go missing whilst abroad, then you are far more likely to be reunited with a microchip.

Your pet can get microchipped at your local vet or a charity, such as RSPCA .

b) Rabies vaccinations.

If you want your take dog or cat on flights, it is likely that he/she requires a valid rabies vaccination. Particularly when you are taking your pet on an international flight as this is a requirement for entering most countries.

Most countries require dogs and cats to have their rabies vaccination between 30 days and 12 months prior to importing.

c) Animal health certificate.

Most airlines will require an official animal health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian when flying with pets in cabin.

In most cases, your health certificate will also need to be endorsed by the country’s authority responsible for the import and export of animals. For example, if you are traveling from the US, you will need your documents endorsed by the USDA. If you are traveling from Canada, you will need to have your documents endorsed by CFIA.

They are normally valid for 10 days.

d) Additional vaccinations.

Depending on where you are flying to, your pet may also require additional vaccinations or treatments.

For example, Turkey requires that all dogs are vaccinated against parainfluenza, leptospirosis, parvovirus, bordetella, hepatitis and distemper before being allowed into the country.

e) Rabies titer test.

Some countries require pets to have a rabies titer test before entering. This is usually the case when you are traveling from a country that is considered high risk for rabies.

If your pet requires a titer test the process is as follows:

  • Your pet will have a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
  • Your vet will then send the blood sample to an approved blood testing laboratory.
  • Your pet’s blood test results must show a rabies antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml.
  • You must wait 3 months from the date the blood sample was taken before you travel.
  • The vet will give you a copy of the test results.

f) Parasite treatment.

To enter many countries, dogs are required to be treated against internal and/or external parasites before entering. This includes treatment for tapeworm, fleas, ticks, nematodes and cestodes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I have to pay extra to fly with my dog in cabin?

You will yes. The amount you pay however, will differ between airlines as they charge different amounts. The charge also depends on where you are flying to and from. International flights usually cost more.

Can I fly with my pet in cabin on international flights?

You may be able to, depending on which airline you are flying with, and where you are flying to and from. Some airlines allow dogs and cats in cabin on international flights, such as Aegean Air. Southwest, however, do not let pets in cabin on international flights.

Can I fly with my puppy or kitten in cabin?

This depends on how old your puppy is, and which airline you are flying with. Different airlines have different restrictions on the age of pets that can fly in cabin. Some require puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old, where others require them to be 16 weeks old.

Can I fly with a large dog in the cabin?

Unfortunately, unless your dog is an official service dog, only small dogs are permitted. Most airlines require that pets and travel carriers must have a combined weight of no more than 8kg. There are however some semi-private airlines that will allow large dogs in cabin.

Traveling with your pet is a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories. Thankfully, several airlines have recognized the importance of allowing pets in the cabin on international flights and have established comprehensive pet policies to accommodate furry travellers. Whether you choose Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, or JetBlue Airways, you can rest assured that your dog will be treated with care and enjoy a safe and comfortable journey by your side.

A Comprehensive Guide to Transporting Dogs or Cats from the USA to Brazil: Rules, Requirements, and Weather Considerations

Planning to relocate your furry friend from the USA to Brazil? Understanding the rules, requirements, and weather considerations is crucial for a successful and stress-free pet transport experience. Brazil has specific regulations in place to ensure the well-being and safety of imported pets.

Here's an extensively detailed guide to help you navigate the process:

  • Research and Prepare in Advance: Start by researching the importation regulations established by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA). Familiarize yourself with their guidelines, as they provide essential information on the necessary steps and requirements for bringing pets into Brazil.
  • Microchip Identification: Ensure that your pets have a microchip implanted for identification purposes. The microchip should comply with ISO standards and be implanted before any other required procedures.
  • Vaccinations and Health Certificate: Pets traveling to Brazil must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination administered at least 30 days prior to travel. Additionally, pets should receive vaccinations against other common diseases. Obtain a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian no more than ten days before travel. The certificate should confirm that your pet is in good health and free from contagious diseases.
  • Blood Titer Test: Brazil does not typically require a blood titer test for dogs or cats. However, it's important to check the specific requirements based on your pet's breed and the state within Brazil where you will be residing. Some states may have additional regulations or restrictions.
  • Import Permit: Obtain an import permit from MAPA before traveling to Brazil. The permit application will require the submission of the health certificate, vaccination records, microchip information, and other necessary documentation. Initiate the permit application process well in advance to allow sufficient time for processing.
  • Airline and Travel Arrangements: Choose an airline that is approved for pet transport and verify their specific requirements for traveling with pets to Brazil. Each airline has its own rules regarding crate dimensions, health documentation, and fees. Ensure that your pets are transported in appropriate travel crates or carriers that meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards.
  • Professional Pet Transportation: Consider working with a professional pet transport company like Across The Pond Pets. They have extensive experience in international pet travel and can assist you in navigating the specific rules and requirements for transporting your pets to Brazil. They can provide guidance, ensure compliance with regulations, and handle the logistics of the journey.

Weather Considerations:

Brazil has a diverse climate, ranging from tropical in the north to temperate in the south. When traveling with your pets, it's important to consider the local weather conditions and make necessary preparations:

  • Heat and Humidity: Brazil can experience high temperatures and humidity, especially in the summer months. Ensure that your pets are adequately hydrated and have access to shade during travel. Avoid exposing them to excessive heat for prolonged periods.
  • Acclimation: Allow your pets time to acclimate to the new climate in Brazil. Gradually introduce them to the local weather conditions and provide them with a comfortable living environment.

By following these guidelines and seeking professional assistance from Across The Pond Pets, you can ensure a smooth and safe relocation for your beloved pets as they embark on their new adventure in Brazil.

pet travel uk to brazil

Traveling with pets to the UK is still a subject that generates a lot of doubts, as the block is one of the most demanding when it comes to receiving animals from other countries.

In addition to the documentation required for international travel with animals, and microchipping, they still require that the process be carried out by a cargo transport company.

So, in addition to organizing the documentation, tutors also need to look for companies that provide this type of service.

Now, if you want to know the step by step to travel with animals to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, keep reading this article that PETFriendly Turismo has prepared especially for you .

What to know before traveling with pets to the UK?

viajar com pets para o Reino Unido2

The UK has a number of requirements for receiving pets from other countries, including:

Anti-rabies vaccine

  • Treatment against worms.

However, only one cargo company can transport pets between Brazil and the block. That is, your pet does not go with you in the cabin of the plane.

The following are all requirements for traveling with pets to the UK.

The main requirement of the block is that your dog or cat has an identification microchip.

The animal must be implanted with the chip before receiving the rabies vaccine. On the other hand, if he already has the chip, he should be vaccinated again.

It is usually a vet or someone trained in animal implants who performs this application.

Brazil is not a rabies-free country, so to travel with pets to the UK it is necessary that the animal is vaccinated against the disease.

Still, the pet must be at least 12 weeks old before vaccination.

An inactivated vaccine or recombinant vaccine approved in Brazil must be used in immunization, according to the rules of the bloc.

All this information must be in the the animal’s passport or the International Zoosanitary Certificate (CZI).

In addition, the vaccine must be within the expiration date informed by the manufacturer.

Traveling with pets to the UK – Serology

Animals from the European Union or rabies-free countries can enter the UK 21 days after receiving the rabies vaccine.

However, in the case of pets from Brazil, they must first be tested for serology.

Thus, the examination must be performed 30 days after the application of the vaccine. In addition, a blood sample must be sent from the animal to an authorized testing laboratory. O São Paulo Zoonoses Laboratory is one of them.

viajar com pets para o Reino Unido1

People from other states should hire a veterinarian who knows the process, as he will need to send the exam documentation by post.

The result takes about two to three months to return to the recipient. Upon completion of this process, the veterinarian provides a copy of the test results.

Serology will be valid as long as rabies vaccination is up to date.

To travel with dogs to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, they must be treated for worms within 24 hours of departure.

The block requires that the active ingredient in the dewormer be Praziquantel or its equivalent effective against Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm.

Hire a carrier

Different from countries like Portugal e Japan , your pet will not be able to travel with you in the cabin of the plane.

This is because the UK requires the traveler to hire a freight forwarder to handle the entire process.

You will also have to hire a local company, which will be responsible for receiving the animal, as well as taking care of its clearance and release at the destination, and then taking it to you.

Therefore, even if the tutor plans to arrive on the same day as the pet, the ideal is to have the contact and address of someone who can receive him in the UK.

The company will request all the animal’s documentation to carry out the transport process of your pet.

Documents required for traveling with pets to the UK

viajar com pets para o Reino Unido3

To travel with pets to the UK , you must be aware of all the original documentation required for transporting your dog or cat, such as

  • Animal passport, with all its information;
  • Vaccination card;
  • Veterinary certificate;
  • Certificate of implantation of the Microchip (with chip date prior to rabies vaccine date);
  • Power of attorney with notarized signature.

Animal Passport

Although the issue this document is suspended because of the pandemic , it is made free of charge at the International Agricultural Surveillance Units (Vigiagro).

The animal passport is used to identify dogs and cats, as well as control vaccinations.

It replaces the CZI on international travel, and on domestic travel it replaces the health certificate issued by the veterinarian.

This document is provided for animals:

  • Over 90 days old;
  • Born in Brazil, or born abroad and definitively imported to Brazil;
  • Created by tutors residing in Brazil ;
  • Good health conditions attested by a veterinarian registered at CRMV-UF.

Learn all about the animal passport in this post made by PETFriendly Turismo for you.

International Animal Health Certificate

The International Animal Health Certificate is mandatory for the transit of dogs and cats between countries. When traveling to the UK it replaces the passport.

This document not only certifies the health conditions of the pets, but also confirms the application of the vaccines required by the country of destination.

To issue the CZI, it is necessary to schedule an appointment at any International airport, taking:

  • Medical certificate of the animal;
  • Vaccination record;

The Certificate is valid for 10 days.

Certificate of Health

Before traveling with pets to the UK, you need to take them to a vet to confirm they are in good health.

This consultation must take place after having the serology result in hand and three days before the flight.

However, the carriers of the destination request the certificate in advance so that they can file the animal’s release documents.

In other words, in practice, you take the animal to the consultation a week before the flight and ask him to put the date closest to the day of the flight.

This is the only way you will be able to send all the documentation to the chosen company in a timely manner.

The model of the valid certificate is provided by the contracted carrier. And the vet needs to follow it to the letter.

It must contain, in addition to the dates of application of the rabies vaccine and serology, information such as color and breed of the animal.

Traveling with pets to the UK – choosing the Airline

The UK requires people who wish to enter the country with animals to hire a freight transport company to carry out the process.

Therefore, no pets travel in the plane’s cabin, not even small ones. The only exception is for guide dogs .

Furthermore, only a few airlines are government approved to transport animals. Between Brazil and the United Kingdom, the companies that provide this service are Lufthansa, KLM Cargo and British Airways.

Similarly, it is necessary to pay attention to the airport of arrival, as only those in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London Heathrow and Manchester accept animals.

Airline Rules

It is essential that, when purchasing your ticket, you state that you intend to travel with pets to the UK and reinforce this notice the week of the flight.

Each airline nominates a company to transport your pet to the UK. In addition, each one has specific rules regarding the shipping box.

The kennel usually needs:

  • Have the following dimensions:  68cm x 50cm x 48cm (length x width x height);
  • Be strong enough to protect the animal throughout the flight;
  • Have ventilation on all four sides;
  • Must have a water pot, which needs to be secure, but not take up too much space in the kennel;
  • Have enough space for the animal to stand up and turn around comfortably;

Does the UK require quarantine?

While the UK does not require all animals to be quarantined, those that do not have full documentation must be confined. And the deadline can reach up to four months.

The same goes for cases where they cannot read the microchip. If this ID is very old, it is worth changing it before planning a trip to the block

How long to plan a trip with pets to the UK?

viajar com pets para o Reino Unido4

If you plan to travel with pets to the UK, start planning your trip at least six months in advance.

Although the carrier helps to speed up the process, the tutor is responsible for implanting the chip, applying the anti-rabies vaccine, serology, deworming, among others.

But now, if you want a peaceful trip for you and your pet, the ideal is to count on the services of PETFriendly Tourism .

Our specialists organize the entire transport process from Brazil to the UK, as well as hiring a company to receive you at your destination.

Humiliated Argentina issues furious dig as Brazil 'helps UK' get tourists to Falklands

A rgentina has issued a furious complaint to Brazil over what it described as "provocative" actions by the UK government to promote its "illegitimate occupation" of the Falkland Islands.

The diplomatic row erupted after the UK was allowed to host a stand promoting tourism to the Falklands at the WTM Latin America trade fair in São Paulo.

In a letter addressed to the Brazilian ambassador in Buenos Aires, Argentina's Secretary for the Malvinas accused the British government of trying to garner support for its sovereignty over the disputed islands in the South Atlantic.

Andres Dachary said Argentina repudiated "this new provocation" which he described as an attempt to "consolidate the illegal British presence in our Islands" through economic initiatives.

Travel to the Falklands is promoted via the island's tourism board, which tries to use its unique wildlife as a key selling point.

The tourist board says it aims to give the Falkland Islands "a worldwide reputation for its unrivalled wildlife and natural environment."

So as to meet that goal, it has been taking part in tourism trade fairs in South America and around the world.

In 2022, the Falkland Islands had a stand at the prestigious International Tourism Fair that also was held in Brazil and provoked an outcry from Argentina.

Before the pandemic, tourism was one of the key industries alongside fishing for the islanders.

Up to seven-and-a-half visitors would come to the Falklands every year. Like everywhere else in the world, tourism to the islands was severely hit by the Covid pandemic but has been picking up in recent years.

Figures for 2022 show that 3,519 people came to the Falklands again, of which some 787 were travelling for leisure.

Argentinians have been frequent visitors in the past, but they now have to get their passports stamped with the word "Falkland Islands", which is deterring many from making the trip.

Javier Milei, Argentina's recently elected President, pledged during his campaign to regain sovereignty over the islands.

He told Sky News during the Davos economic forum in January that talks had started with the UK over the islands and that he expected more discussions to take place in the near future.

However, Britain insists the sovereignty of the islands is not up for discussion.

Commenting on Mr Milei's remarks, a British government official said: "The UK position and ongoing support for the Falkland Islanders' right to self-determination remains unchanged."

In a referendum on the islands' sovereignty in 2013, 99.8 percent voted to remain a British territory - with only three voting against.

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.

See what's happening where you are here:

With the local elections less than a week away, deputy political editor Sam Coates explains why they matter and what they might tell us about the upcoming general election.

Ash Regan - the MSP who could decide the future of Humza Yousaf - has appeared to name her price for her support in next week's no-confidence vote.

She has said, in a letter to Alba Party members, that investment in the Grangemouth refinery will be a key condition of her backing the first minister.

The refinery is currently due to shut as early as next year and move to being an import and export terminal.

Alba has launched a a campaign to sustain jobs at the refinery.

"A sign of good faith would be a significant government investment, reinforcing the campaign to save the Grangemouth refinery from closure," she says in her letter.

"I am requesting the undertaking to produce such an initiative in the early course.

"I am hopeful that the first minister will commit to such an initiative in the near future as a sign of our shared dedication to Scotland's welfare."

Ms Regan was once part of the SNP and ran in the contest to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as leader last year, the contest Mr Yousaf won.

She defected to Alex Salmond's Alba Party in October.

The battle for a town that no one there wants.

Sky News is reporting from Grimsby in the run-up to the general election as one of its Target Towns - a key constituency prized by both Conservatives and Labour - Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

But it turns out that Grimsby doesn't really want them.

It hasn't always been a town doused in apathy.

In 2016, 70% of people here voted to leave the EU - one of the highest results in the country - and in the 2019 election, the constituency turned Tory for the first time since the Second World War.

But five years on, polling by Sky News found that since then, the number of people saying they "almost never" trust the British government to place the needs of the nation above the interests of their own party has nearly doubled - from 26% to 49%.

It's a stark but bleak view. Voters described both leaders as uninspiring and uninteresting.

When asked what they make of the current prime minister, words like "weak" and "performative" were used.

Voters couldn't make their minds up about the Labour leader, saying they were unsure about him or his policies.

The lack of a clear dividing line between the two parties could be a problem in the general election, especially as both parties have been trying to show a bit more leg this week ahead of a fully-fledged election campaign.

Labour has shown a hint of more radical policies, with their announcement on aiming to nationalise railways within five years.

But have they waited a bit too long to impress the people of Grimsby?

The Conservatives ratified their Rwanda policy into law, but voters here weren't hugely enthused by that either, with one member of the audience tonight proclaiming they care much more about housing and the environment.

They asked - why is the centre of political debate about Rwanda and a policy we don't really care about?

Apathy might override this election.

By  Jennifer Scott , political reporter

Voters in Grimsby - one of Sky News's election Target Towns - have been offering their views on politics, politicians and "broken promises".

The electoral battle in Grimsby and Cleethorpes,  the Target Towns , will be fierce. Labour will need an 11.7 point swing to win this newly-merged constituency back from the Conservatives.

In 2019, residents in Grimsby voted Tory for the first time since the end of the Second World War. The old Cleethorpes constituency was always more of a bellwether, having voted Conservative since 2010.

However, it has shed some of its rural, Conservative-voting residents in the merger.

Speaking on the  Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge , small business owner Shannon said she might not vote in the next general election later this year as she "just can't trust anything anybody says".

She said she has felt this way since Brexit - something Grimsby was overwhelmingly in support of - because "we were promised 'x' and 'y' and it hasn't happened, so I'm just totally disengaged from it".

Asked whether local MPs on the panel - Conservative Lia Nici and Labour's Melanie Onn - could change her mind, Shannon said "possibly", but reiterated how let down local people feel.

"We're promised a lot, but it's never delivered," she said. "Talk of things happening... and then it doesn't happen and people are just fed up... have been told this is what we're going to get, but it doesn't actually happen. And that's why people have just lost faith."

Douglas Ross has confirmed his party will support a bid by Scottish Labour to hold a no-confidence vote in the government.

Speaking to Times Radio, the Scottish Conservatives leader said: "What we have already seen in reaction to the Labour motion being put by Anas Sarwar is that it is not gaining support from crucially the Greens.

"They (Greens) have said they will back our motion of no confidence in Humza Yousaf, but they are not saying the same about the motion of no confidence in the entire Scottish government.

"I'll support that because I want to get rid of the Scottish government but ultimately, we are on the brink of removing Humza Yousaf from office.

"He has been a failure as first minister and we have an opportunity next week to end his time in office."

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar announced the move earlier on Friday.

It is separate to the vote of no-confidence in Humza Yousaf that is set to take place early next week.

If Mr Yousaf loses that he doesn't automatically have to resign, but his position would be put in considerable peril.

If the Scottish Labour motion of no-confidence is successful, it would force the first minister and his cabinet to resign.

Humza Yousaf's future as first minister is hanging in the balance ahead of a motion of no confidence next week.

Now, as leader of a minority government, his fate may be hanging on just one vote - that of a former SNP leadership rival.

We take a look at how:

The numbers

In the Scottish parliament, the SNP has 63 seats out of 129 , two short of an outright majority;

The Conservatives have  31;

Labour has 22;

The Greens have  seven;

The Liberal Democrats have four;

The Alba Party has one ;

There is also one presiding officer Alison Johnstone, who is both an MSP and Scotland's equivalent of the Commons speaker.

How the numbers are expected to fall

The motion of no confidence was brought by the Scottish Conservatives.

The Greens, Labour and the Lib Dems have all said they are backing the motion.

That would translate into 64 votes against the first minister versus 63 SNP votes.

So the one Alba vote is expected to be key.

How it may all come down to one ... Ash Regan

Once an SNP leadership rival to Mr Yousaf, Ash Regan defected to Alex Salmond's Alba Party last October.

If she backs Mr Yousaf then that would mean both sides have 64 votes.

Ms Johnstone would then be expected to vote in favour of the status quo, so the first minister would survive.

But if Ms Regan votes against Mr Yousaf, then the opposition parties will have 65 votes against the SNP's 63, and the first minister would lose.

He wouldn't be compelled to resign in this situation, but he'd be under huge pressure to step aside.

More to come

And remember, Scottish Labour have lodged a separate motion of no confidence in the Scottish government.

Alba have said it won't back that motion.

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf is battling to save his job as he faces a knife-edge no-confidence vote.

The SNP leader triggered a crisis at Holyrood after he dramatically brought the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens to an end.

The backlash has plunged Mr Yousaf's future into doubt, although party colleagues insist he will not resign.

How did we get here?

The Bute House Agreement - signed back in 2021 and named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh - brought the Green Party into government for the first time anywhere in the UK.

It gave the SNP a majority at Holyrood when the votes of its MSPs were combined with those of the seven Green members, and also made Green co-leaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater junior ministers.

Without it, the SNP would need to have operated as a minority administration at Holyrood.

What caused the relationship to sour?

There had been mounting tensions between the largest party at Holyrood and their junior partners in government.

The Greens were angered at the SNP-led administration's recent decision to ditch a key climate change target.

That, combined with the decision to pause the prescription of new puberty blockers to under-18s at at Scotland's only gender clinic, resulted in the Greens announcing they would have a vote on the future of the power-sharing deal.

Lord David Cameron has heralded the UK-Mongolia partnership today, saying it is "stronger than ever," as he completes his five-day tour of Central Asia.

The foreign secretary's visit to Mongolia saw him meet president Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh.

And he can be seen posing for photos with one of the prime minister of Mongolia's horses.

Lord Cameron also took part in an English lesson at a school in the capital, Ulaanbaatar.

His tour of Central Asia has already taken him to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Kitted out in his hard hat and high-vis jacket, an embattled Humza Yousaf toured a new social housing development in Dundee today as he dodges incoming political fire.

It was difficult to miss the metaphor of him stepping out on to the balcony of one home. A leader whose career appears to be teetering on the edge.

I spoke to the first minister live on Sky News and his message could not have been clearer. He is clambering to cling on. Defiant that he will win a looming no-confidence vote.

He denies suggestions he even considered quitting in the past 24 hours.

Some sources within the SNP, though, told a different tale.

They contradict their leader with a suggestion he had serious conversations with his inner circle about the path ahead.

The sacked Green ministers may get the ultimate political "revenge" when they cast their vote next week.

One Green source told me the only move they would support Mr Yousaf doing is resigning. "He needs to go now", they said.

The question is how long can the SNP chief ride the storm? His fate now lies in the hands of one-time leadership rival Ash Regan.

He said she was "no great loss" when she defected to Alex Salmond's Alba party last year.

Mr Yousaf must now reset relations with the very people he has burned bridges with since taking over as Scotland's leader in the wake of Nicola Sturgeon's shock resignation.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Brazil set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Brazilian Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Brazil.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Brazil, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You can visit Brazil without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism.

If you want to extend your tourist visa, contact the Federal Police (in Portuguese) before your visa expires.

For more information about visas, contact the Brazilian Consulate in London .

If you overstay your visa, you’ll face a daily fine. You have the option to pay this fine either when you leave Brazil or during your next visit. You will not be allowed to re-enter Brazil if you do not pay the fine. Overstaying your visa will result in a 6-month ban from re-entering the country.

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Make sure the border control officer puts a stamp in your passport. If it is not stamped, you may be fined when you leave.

Read about passport stamping if you live in Brazil  (in Portuguese).

At Brazil border control, you must be able to show:

  • information about the purpose of your visit
  • evidence you have enough money for your whole stay
  • details of your accommodation
  • evidence of return or onward travel

British-Brazilian dual nationals

Brazilian immigration authorities often require dual British-Brazilian nationals visiting Brazil to travel on Brazilian (rather than British) passports.

Travelling with children

Children with dual british-brazilian citizenship.

British-Brazilian dual nationals under the age of 18 who are travelling without all parents or legal guardians need authorisation from all parents or legal guardians to travel in Brazil or leave the country.

If they travel with only one parent (or guardian) or without any parent, they must have 2 original written authorisations from all parents or guardians. Read more about the formal travel authorisation process for Brazilian minors and the frequently asked questions .

You must show this permission when the under-18 leaves Brazil. One copy will be kept by the Federal Police inspection agent, together with a copy of the under-18’s identification document, and the other must stay with the under-18 or the adult accompanying them on the trip.

Children who are not dual British-Brazilian nationals

The Federal Police have sometimes delayed the travel of non-Brazilian under-18s who travel without authorisation from both parents. Families of non-Brazilian under-18s travelling through Brazil without one or both parents should follow the instructions for dual British-Brazilian under-18s. Make sure the under-18 or their travelling companion also carries the original or notarised copy of the under-18’s birth certificate. Contact the Brazilian Consulate in London for more information.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Brazil guide . Depending on your circumstances, this may include a yellow fever vaccine.
