Unveiling the Quintessential Family Cruiser: The 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager Van

The year is 1989, and the Plymouth Grand Voyager emerges as a beacon of suburban mobility, redefining the family van with its blend of versatility and comfort. Born from the innovative spirit of Chrysler Corporation, this vehicle was not just a means of transportation; it was a symbol of an era. The Grand Voyager was part of a lineage that pioneered the minivan segment, which revolutionized family travel and cargo transportation. As a unique fact, the Grand Voyager was one of the first to offer an optional V6 engine in a market dominated by less powerful four-cylinders, setting a new standard for performance in family vehicles.

Design and Innovation: A Glimpse into the Future of Family Travel

The exterior styling of the 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager was both functional and forward-thinking, with its boxy silhouette making a clear statement about its practical nature. The interior was a testament to thoughtful design, featuring plush seating and an array of compartments for every conceivable family need. Materials were chosen for durability, catering to the wear and tear of daily life. Technologically, it boasted features like power windows and locks, which were advanced for its time. Available in a palette of colors that ranged from classic whites and grays to bolder blues and reds, the wood-paneled variants remain an iconic image of the era. The most popular body style was the extended wheelbase version, which offered additional space that families quickly grew to love.

Historical Significance: Paving the Way for Modern Family Transportation

The 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager didn't just meet the standards of its day; it set them. It was among the trailblazers that introduced car-like handling and comfort to larger vehicles, influencing a generation of automotive design. Its impact is seen in how today's minivans and SUVs prioritize passenger comfort and versatility, a concept that was once revolutionary.

Performance and Handling: The Family Van That Could

Under the hood, the Grand Voyager's optional 3.0-liter V6 engine provided a respectable top speed and acceleration that could take it from 0-60 mph in a time that challenged some sedans of its era. The ride quality was smooth, absorbing bumps with grace while maintaining composure on windy roads. Driving one was about enjoying the journey as much as the destination, with an engine hum that was reassuring rather than raucous, and a driving position that offered commanding views of the road ahead.

Ownership Experience: More Than Just a Van

The 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager served faithfully as a daily driver, a weekend warrior for home improvement projects, and even as an impromptu camper for adventurous families. Its reliability was one of its strong suits, with many units surpassing significant mileage milestones with regular maintenance. Repairs were generally straightforward, making it a favorite among those who preferred to handle their own vehicle maintenance.

Fun Facts: The Voyager's Voyage Through Pop Culture and Criticism

Despite its utilitarian nature, the Grand Voyager had its share of the limelight, occasionally appearing in films and TV shows that highlighted family life in the late '80s and early '90s. It also faced its share of criticisms, particularly concerning fuel economy—a common trade-off for its size and power at the time.

Collector's Information: A Nostalgic Investment?

Today, the 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager holds a unique place in collector circles. While exact production numbers are elusive, it's clear that this van was produced in significant quantities. Its value range can vary widely based on condition and mileage, but well-preserved examples can fetch prices that reflect their growing nostalgia factor. As for appreciation, while it may not command the astronomical prices of some classic cars, it has seen a steady increase in interest from collectors looking for a piece of automotive history.

Conclusion: The Legacy of the 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager Van

The 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager Van stands as a testament to innovation and practicality in automotive design. It paved the way for future generations of family vehicles and remains a cherished icon for those who grew up with its distinctive shape parked in their driveways. As we look back on this classic vehicle, we're reminded that sometimes, the most ordinary things can have an extraordinary impact on our lives.

Capsule Review: 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Mike Solowiow

Who really debuted the first ever mini-van? The title remains hotly contested, between Renault’s Espace, and ChryCo’s Caravan/Voyager twins (not to mention the VW Microbus). But to North Americans and Europeans, that’s a moot point; both were first in their respective markets. The 1984 off-spring of Lee Iacocca came from Chrysler’s S-Platform, a stretched version of the K-Car chassis. (Yes, the very chassis that saved the Pentastar brand with its first-ever federal bailout.) By rejecting the normal rear wheel-drive layout of the time, the Voyager came off as a modern marvel. It boasted a transverse-front wheel-drive layout, flexible seating, good fuel economy, a smooth ride and car-like handling– something that took the other two Detroiters several years to figure out.

My 10-year odyssey with Beelzebub, the screaming white brick of death, cemented in my mind as a van that was well designed, but not much fun to drive (to a 15 year old). While the Grand Caravan wasn’t exactly full of character, it helped create its own identity by the memories and experiences that occurred within into its cavernous interior. With the seats removed, it could fit 17 teenagers on a pilgrimage to Taco Express. FYI.

Did those things came equipped with Chrysler's 2.2 or 2.5 Turbo four? I've read some tales about some very cool turbo screammers in the internet.

Wow, this really brings back memories. My parents bought a 1989 DGC because I was born and my sister came along later on in 1992. I remember we always took this car to L.A. and Santa Cruz. Sadly it was poorly made and at 10,000 miles you can hear the sliding door squeek and at 35,000 miles the tranny bombed. It was really in innovative minivan though I gotta admit.

  • Merc190 The best looking Passat in my opinion. Even more so if this were brown. And cloth seats. And um well you know the best rest and it doesn't involve any electronics...
  • Calrson Fan Battery powered 1/2 ton pick-ups are just a bad idea period. I applaud Tesla for trying to reinvent what a pick-up truck is or could be. It would be a great truck IMO with a GM LS V8 under the hood. The Lightening however, is a poor, lazy attempt at building an EV pick-up. Everyone involved with the project at Ford should be embarrassed/ashamed for bringing this thing to market.
  • Jeff I like the looks of this Mustang sure it doesn't look like the original but it is a nice looking car. It sure beats the looks of most of today's vehicles at least it doesn't have a huge grill that resembles a fish.
  • Doc423 SDC's are still a LONG way off, 15-20 years minimum.

Super rare factory turbo voyager (same as dodge caravan) in excellent condition. I bought this from the original owner who bought it new in 1988. He kept it OEM stock for all these years and had it in amazing condition (20+ years of receipts). I've done a lot to it since then and my goal was to keep it stealth and 100% reliable. It comes with full interior (no rips) and ice cold R12 AC! It runs 15psi and is a blast to drive. Never been to the track or abused. All work professionally installed no mickey mouse stuff. No leaks no issues no repairs needed. Here is what I've done since I've owned it. Maintenance: - rebuilt head with valve job, all new gaskets and bolts - new motor mounts - new left cv axle - new thicker radiator, new fan motor, new thermostat, all new hoses (including heater host) and clamps - new timing belt, new water pump, new distributer, plugs and wires - power steering fluid flush - new interstate battery with warranty - all new driveline belts - R12 A/C recharge Performance: - supra intercooler with custom piping - custom cold air intake with 3.5" amsoil filter - synapse diverter valve with foam filer to keep it quite - FWD computer - turboXS manual boost controller - 2.5" OD dynomax muffler with stock downpipe and stock dual tip side exit exhaust Located in central Texas north of Austin. Price is firm at $5500 and not going to give it away. This is a rare combo in Plymouth form with 7 seats!

1989 Plymouth Voyager Reviews

1989 plymouth voyager se 2.5 from north america.

It has exceeded my expectations

Steering rack leaked at 70,000 miles.

Three of 4 CV boots have been replaced.

AC clutch replaced once.

Broken motor mount at 152,000 miles.

General Comments:

Overall, the car has been very good. I replace oil every 2000 miles and manual transmission oil every 30,000 miles. No engine or transmission trouble. Easily passes air quality tests. Still gets 25-27 MPG on highway.

Paint is still good (garaged for first 12 years). No electrical problems. Original clutch.

Under-powered. I pull a tent trailer or utility trailer much of the time -- passing is a challenge.

1989 Plymouth Voyager LE 6 cylinder from North America

Do not even consider buying this vehicle

By 100,000 it was on its 4th transmission, which cost about $1900 each time to replace.

The electrical system gave many problems. At 125,000, starting the vehicle caused the back windshield wiper to come on.

Brakes needed frequent repair.

Something went wrong with the suspension such that the vehicle leaned at a 15 degree angle. It was like this when I bought it.

The false wood trim on the sides became loose and peeled.

The turn signal housing became loose, and would have been very expensive to repair because of the difficulty in removing the adjustable steering wheel, so I didn't repair it.

The water pump failed, and was very expensive to repair ($1200)

This is the worse vehicle I've ever owned in terms of things going wrong.

I bought it because Consumer Reports said it was reliable, easy to work on, and parts were inexpensive. I found it was generally unreliable, parts were VERY expensive, and it was extremely difficult to work on. My mechanic eventually refused to work on it. To replace the water pump, the engine had to be removed.

It appears the transmission is designed to fail every 30 or 40 thousand miles because of its design.

1989 Plymouth Voyager LXE 2.5 TBI from North America

Great minivan for the long haul, especially if you are mechanically inclined!

Radiator replaced.

Struts replaced.

Brakes rebuilt.

Muffler replaced.

Catalytic converter replaced.

EGR valve replaced.

Clutch replaced.

Fuel Pump replaced.

Rear Shocks replaced (dampeners)

Power steering rack replaced.

Front engine mount broke at 153,000 miles.

I know it looks like a lot of replacing, but I really consider most of them minor maintenance items on a car with over 200,00 miles on it. I know some people claim they have never had to do anything to their minivans, but I am a little skeptical.

Replacement parts are very inexpensive and easy to obtain at NAPA and other lower price (read than non-MOPAR) sources. The vehicle is so easy to work on, especially with the 2.5L engine which is so easy to do all the maintenance stuff with.

Fuel economy is OK, wish it were better, but 25MPG on the highway is OK.

Acceleration with the 5 speed manual transmission is pretty good unless the vehicle is really loaded down. Cruises great at 75MPH all day long on the interstate. Easy to drive and great in the snow. It is a very stable ride.

One word of advice though - do not take your Voyager out on an old dirt road that takes you 10 miles from the nearest real road up in the mountains of Maine where 4x4's and SUV's rarely even venture. You might break a CV joint and be stranded overnight far from a place where your cel phone works.

1989 Plymouth Voyager LE 3.0 from North America

Good solid work horse for it's model

After owning the Van for several years the Transmission started bucking, a little research was performed to find out that the standard transmission fluid recommended for the model is actually wrong, even thought it's on the dip stick. What is needed is 7176 fluid.

Replaced old fluid with this cost is $1.43 for old to $9.00 for new fluid (per QT).

Transmission problems went away. Transmission was retrained in the process.

Replaced radiator, and hoses.

Replaced alternator.

CV bearings replaced on front.

Paint of course is coming off.

The VAN does have good pick up provided you keep your engine regularly tuned.

I use Duralube with Valvoline extended mileage oil during changes.

While this does not help with the engine smoke problems related too bad designed valves, I do get pretty good gas mileage for as old as the van is.

The Van is good at carrying heavy loads during transport, it's crossed the country from east to west five times.

While I may or may not buy another of this type, I certainly will keep the van till it finally dies. I drive it because of the heavy loads it can take for equipment transports or outings.

If you are having problems do a little research into the problem and find out what may be needed instead of what the dealer book recommends.

I highly recommend getting your transmission flushed every two years if you have high mileage, its done wonders for me, still running on the original transmission.

1999 Plymouth Voyager review: Our expert's take

One day a couple of years ago, I went to my favorite sandwich shop for lunch. I ended up with a meatloaf sub, an iced tea and a Dodge minivan.

I didn’t go with the intention of getting the van, of course, but there it was sitting out front with a "for sale" sign in the window and the two rear seats removed. I looked inside and knew right away it could be a great vehicle for hauling around my antique bicycles. It had served Ben, the owner of the sandwich shop, well, and he was sorry to see it go. In fact, he still talks lovingly of his trusted Dodge Caravan.

I am a little biased when it comes to minivans from DaimlerChrysler. Because I own one, I know how well they work. I am not married, and I don’t have a family, just a rambunctious brown dachshund. But I like Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth brand minivans.

And I think this week’s test vehicle, the base model Plymouth Voyager, is an outstanding van for a great price. If you place exceptional value at the top of your list of requirements in a new vehicle, take a good look at the Voyager. There is no other family vehicle — minivans included — that I’ve seen that comes close to the comfort, room, versatility and quality of the Voyager for the same money.

Performance, handling

The base Voyager comes with a 2.4-liter, double overhead cam, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine rated at 150 horsepower. Two V-6s are on the options list — a 150-horsepower 3.0-liter and a 158-horsepower 3.3-liter.

Performance from the four-cylinder engine is adequate. The engine runs as smoothly and quietly as a sewing machine and delivers enough thrust so that you can safely merge into fast-moving traffic. For in-town chores, such as trips to the grocery store or to drop the kids at school, the four-cylinder engine gets the job done economically. Expect about 22 miles per gallon in city driving with the air conditioner running.

The base model Voyager is equipped with a three-speed automatic transmission. The shifts are crisp and well-timed to take advantage of the engine’s power. The drivetrain has a refined, Hondalike feel of quality.

Because of its carlike handling, Voyager has been atop the sales charts since the day the old Chrysler Corp. invented the minivan in 1984. The 1999 model continues that tradition.

The Voyager has a soft and easy ride, but it also handles reasonably well. The body doesn’t lean much when you round a corner. The front strut and rear tubular beam axle suspension system smooths out most bumps. When the Voyager was revamped a few years ago, engineers stiffened the body. Undoubtedly, that helps give the Voyager its refined feel over the road.

Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and power front disc/rear drum brakes are standard. The Voyager is an easy van to maneuver in tight places. It can turn a complet e cir cle in a commendable 37.6 feet. The brakes stop the 3,500-pound vehicle quickly and without fuss. Standard anti-lock brakes would be a nice touch, though.

Fit and finish

It’s rare, but every now and then I test-drive a car that hits all the right chords and makes me feel good about it right away. The Voyager is one of those vehicles.

There’s nothing to dislike about the Voyager. The dimensions are just right. The interior is comfortable, designed with user-friendliness in mind and screwed together tightly. The buttons, switches and controls for the radio, air conditioner, headlights and rear window wiper are labeled well and within easy reach of the driver’s seat; adjustments can be made without taking your eyes off the road for more than a second or two. For instance, to change the temperature, you just slide a button left or right. The air conditioner was excellent. The fan blows strongly enough to circulate air all the way to the back of the van.

Our test van came without power windows, door locks, power mirrors and cruise control — and I didn’t miss any of these features. The windows were easy enough to roll down. Once the mirrors were adjusted, I never needed to mess with them again, and I could reach over and lock or unlock any of the doors.

The seats were upholstered with thick silver cloth. They not only looked sharp but were padded well in the lower back area, so I was able to stay comfortable during several long trips. As part of the $1,295 Family Value package, the Voyager adds a second bench seat that increases capacity to seven passengers.

For an extra $595, the Voyager is available with a sliding door on the driver’s side. It’s a nice convenience but not essential if you are watching your pennies. With the two rear seats out, the Voyager doubles as a pickup truck. The floor is totally flat and wide enough so that you can place a sheet of plywood in the back.

The rear seats, by the way, are on wheels and extremely easy to remove. You just click a button and pull up on two levers, and the seats slide on a track right to the edge of the tailgate. T hey are a bit heavy to lift down from the vehicle, but once on the pavement they can be rolled right into the garage.

These days minivans have a sort of frumpy image. That doesn’t fit, in my estimation. As long as there are families in need of a versatile vehicle that offers good value for the dollar, the Plymouth Voyager will never go out of style.

Base price: $18,805. Safety: Dual air bags and side-impact protection. Price as tested: $20,005. EPA rating: 20 mpg city/26 mpg hig hway. Incentives: $1,000 rebate.

Best vehicle i've ever had..

I bought it brand new and still works great. Only thing that it has needed were new break pads, and regular maintenance. I bought new cars usually, and none lasted as long. You can take out the seats and you have an enclosed truck to carry bags of soil and bricks, and all kinds of things. I checked here to see how much they are still worth, but I have zero intentions to sell it. I'm 71 and hoping for another 18 years, then I can drop dead. I bet the minivan will still run. Another woman in town has an identical one, we keep getting them confused because we go to the same stores. She loves her's.
