Menara Gardens

running tour marrakech

Categories:

  • Arboretum/Botanical Garden

Located on the west side of Marrakech, the Menara Gardens and Pavilion were established in the 12th century B.C., and have stood the test of time as a top tourist destination. With olive groves, an artificial lake, and loads of cement and asphalt paths, the gardens are also a peaceful running destination. The park itself features about 4 km of paths, but runners travelling from the center of the city can arrive via Avenue Prince Moulay Rachid , which begins at New Gate and features a wide stone paved sidewalk.

Add-On: Runners can also cut into Oliveraie Park off Avenue Prince Moulay Rachid for variety and a longer run. All in all, a loop of Menara Gardens starting and ending at New Gate is about 7 km. For more mileage, continue northeast from New Gate (along the Medina Walls) and add on a 3 km loop around the pristine gardens of Cyber Park .

  • 7 km (4.5 miles) out and back, including garden loop and section along Avenue Prince Moulay Rachid
  • 14 meters (46 feet)
  • Avenue Prince Moulay Rachid/Sofitel

Explore Morocco’s Red City on Foot

Marrakech – Morocco’s Red City is a major economic center and a fantastic tourist destination. Marrakesh is comprised of an old, fortified city, the medina quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the largest traditional market (souk) in Morocco, with over 18 souks selling wares ranging from traditional Berber carpets to designer fashion and art exhibitions. Encased within the powder-pink rammed-earth walls is a show-stopping sight of crowded souqs, where sheep carcasses swing from hooks next door to twinkling lamps, and wood carvers exhibiting their craft, with a labyrinth of narrow, ochre-dusted lanes leading to nowhere. The main artery into this mazy ataxia is the vast square – Djemaa El Fna, where it’s carnival night every night; here you can experience the old city’s frantic pace, by strolling between snail vendors, henna artists, acrobats and conjurers, musicians and slapstick acting troupes.

When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the old city, then Marrakesh’s Ville Nouvelle (new town) is a good change of pace. Here you will find leafy parks, cafe culture, a thriving contemporary art scene and the best bars and gourmet restaurants in town. The Neighbourhoods of Gueliz and Hivernage with wide, French-era streets lined with remnants of art deco architecture are home to upscale Moroccan and European restaurants, cabarets, and chic bars, mainstream fashion stores, art galleries, that includes Majorelle Gardens, created by the eponymous painter, and later owned by Yves Saint Laurent, with grasses, cactuses, flowers, and various elements painted cobalt blue.

10 Peaceful Running Routes in Marrakech

Scenic Gardens in Marrakech

Marrakech is applauded for its rich heritage and abundance of beautiful buildings, but it can also be a great destination for active fans of the great outdoors. Get your blood pumping and go for a jog (or scenic stroll) in one of these lovely locations.

Around the medina walls.

Marrakech’s ancient medina is a twisting maze of narrow streets and tiny alleys, with many people, bicycles, scooters, and donkeys making running through the medina almost impossible. It would definitely not be a peaceful experience! The outer medina walls, however, could be a great choice for keen joggers. The high sand-coloured walls that encircle the medina stretch for around 20 kilometres. Wide paths run most of the way around the walls, providing an easy loop for runners to follow. There are also plenty of gates and openings in the walls that allow you to cut back into the medina if you don’t want to run the entire circuit.

Outside the high walls of Marrakech’s old medina

Along Boulevard Mohammed VI

In the menara gardens.

The tranquil Menara Gardens have a number of paths and dirt trails leading through the trees and around the pool. The leafy trees also offer plenty of shade to help combat the sun, though, as with most running routes in Marrakech, avoiding the hottest time of the day is recommended. The choice of trails means that you can make your workout as long or as short as you like.

Menara Gardens, Marrakech

Bab Jdid – Menara Road

The wide Bab Jdid – Menara Road is a perfect place to avoid the hustle and bustle of Marrakech on a run. Covering a distance of just over four kilometres and running along one side of the lush Oliveraie, set off from Bab Jdid (also known as the New Gate) to reach the peaceful Menara Gardens. The views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance provide a wonderful distraction as you pound the pavement. You can either double your run, returning to the heart of the city by foot, or you can jump in a taxi or calleche to bring you back to the medina.

Around Cyber Park

Also known as Moulay Abdessalam Park, the large Cyber Park is another of Marrakech’s pretty parks and gardens that is ideal for people looking for a pleasant spot to exercise. Tall palm trees provide plenty of shade, and there are also orange trees and low shrubs throughout the park. The park covers eight hectares and there are different routes to choose between.

Fountains in Cyber Park, Marrakech

At the Palmeraie

The Palmeraie is a scenic place for a run, with tall palm trees to admire, a peaceful atmosphere, and good facilities if you want to rest during or after your run. Run past camels sitting next to the flat roads and soak up the vistas over the golf course. A suggested 12-kilometre route starts close to Douar Abiad, before leading south along the Route des Jardins de la Palmeraie. Cut across after the road leading to the Hotel Tikida to reach the road that runs almost parallel with the Oued Issil River. Run north until you meet the Route des Jardins de la Palmeraie again, and loop back around to where you started from. There are several opportunities to go off-road running too for slightly more challenging terrain than tarmac.

Trees at the Palmeraie

Route of the Marrakech Marathon

Experienced runners who are feeling truly energetic might like to attempt running the route of the annual Marrakech Marathon. If you’re not keen on covering the entire 42-odd kilometres, you can opt to follow just part of the run for a less strenuous experience. The route begins on Avenue de la Menara and it includes locations like the Menara Gardens, Agdal Gardens , and the Palmeraie, before finishing almost exactly where it began.

Route of the Marrakech Half Marathon

The yearly Marrakech Half Marathon starts at the same place as the full marathon, with competitors following the same route for the first 29 kilometres. At Kaa El Mechra, however, those taking part in the Half Marathon change direction to loop back to the starting point in Hivernage, passing by Bab Doukala gate.

Around the perimeter of the Oliveraie

The Olivereraie is a large olive garden in Marrakech. Bisected by the sweeping Boulevard Mohamed VI, you can run in an almost perfect square around the perimeter of the olive groves. Paths are generally quiet, though you will encounter some busy areas. Start at any corner of the gardens and follow the park’s border, crossing Boulevard Mohamed VI twice, to return to where you began. The square route covers around five kilometres.

Olive trees against the sky

Along the Road of Royal Golf

A shorter run of just over one and a half kilometres, start at the Museum of African Contemporary Art G Maaden – Macaal and follow the scenic and quiet Road of Royal Golf to the intersection with Avenue Tassiltante, at the side of the Agdal Gardens. Alternatively, for a longer, looped run, you can continue north along Avenue Tassiltante and then turn along Avenue Al Mssalla, following the road across to meet with Avenue Al Oued and running south back to the starting point.

Additionally, there are several organised races in and close to Marrakech throughout the year. As well as the previously mentioned Marrakech Marathon and Marrakech Half Marathon, there are two annual events that take place in the striking Agafay Desert. The 12-kilometre-long Agafay Full Moon Run takes place each year during Ramadan (dates vary from year to year). The other event in the Agafay Desert is the Nomad’s Run, which can be varied in length according to personal preferences and can also include a combination of running and cycling. Combining slopes and flats, it’s a challenging race in gorgeous lunar-like surroundings. The Morocco Race starts on the outskirts of Marrakech, close to Terres d’Amanar adventure park. Held each November, there are four distances to choose between: 10, 25, 65, and 95 kilometres.

Although we call it "desert", this is not a typical uninhabited place full of sand dunes, like the Sahara. It is more of a barren deserted plateau . Its terrain provides a great environment for those who want to enjoy outdoor activities, such as this trail running tour .

This program consists of  an easy trail running itinerary in the Agafay Desert . The route offers meandering paths up and down ravines and dramatic sand dunes. Moreover, we will enjoy amazing views of the High Atlas Mountains . The starting and ending point is the Lalla Takerkoust Dam.

This trail running tour will take us no more than half a day. The furthest point will be an old and abandoned village. Here we can learn some history about the people who once inhabited it.

After the tour we'll have plenty of time to enjoy the experience of being in the desert far from civilization. Moreover, once we finish the tour we can taste a delicious "Tajin". It is a typical Moroccan dish you'll probably love!

So, if you are looking to go on a fun outdoor adventure during your Moroccan vacation, come join me. Contact me and I will be happy to take you on this trail running tour in the Agafay Desert!

Mountain Leader

I am a certified International Mountain Leader and a Summer Mountain Leader (UK). In addition, I hold a Diploma in Conservation and Wildlife Management. Originally from Great Britain, I am now based near Marrakech, in Morocco. Actually, in a Berber town at the foot of the Berber Mountains. The love for travel runs in my veins. In the Sahara I lived with nomads. In Siberia I met reindeer herders. In Mongolia I traveled with yurt-dwellers. The stunning landscapes and nice people of Morocco have enchanted me, which is why I now live here. My goal is sharing with my clients the exotic beauty that I've discovered here. The environment is of extreme importance to me. In particular, I'm interested in geology and birds of prey. Besides speaking English and French, I can get by in Berber. My work is not limited to this area: I also do the Tour du Mont Blanc trek in the Alps.

Many thanks for organising the event! One can add my experience for feedback! I booked this trip as I wish to run another marathon in Africa as I had previously travelled with Marathon Tours and Travel (Cape Town Marathon!) I think it was a great weekend holiday as the flight was only around 3.30 hours from Heathrow and transport from airport and hotel was all sorted out! Arriving in Marrakech I felt totally stress free especially BIB already been delivered to the hotel! Breakfast and dinner were included! The hotel was well within walking distance from the start and finishing line. The marathon itself is a loop to loop marathon with a gradual incline in the early part of the race! One can run a decent time as when one goes up, it have to come down! The weather is also well suited for running! The last 10 km was mainly downhill! Although one cannot compare crowd support with a marathon majors but one can feel the enthusiasm especially from passing pedestrians and small pockets of support throughout the course. No surprise I had improved my finishing time when compare when I last ran in Africa! There is enough time for me to do some sightseeing after the race! I would recommend any runners interested in running a marathon in each continent to pick this package for their Africa leg! Also a big Thankyou to Marie the trip organiser who is always so helpful and organised throughout this trip!

Thank you so much. What a lovely run! Thoroughly enjoyed it. I was very glad of the support offered by the company and it was lovely to walk over together in the morning.

Marrakech was a beautiful experience and your services were really very good.

10 Peaceful Running Routes in Marrakech

Lace up your running shoes, get active, and discover the best places for a morning or evening jog around morocco's red city of marrakech..

mob-option-logo

Marrakech is applauded for its rich heritage and abundance of beautiful buildings, but it can also be a great destination for active fans of the great outdoors. Get your blood pumping and go for a jog (or scenic stroll) in one of these lovely locations.

Located in the newer area of Gueliz , the wide Boulevard Mohamed VI is a popular spot for sports enthusiasts. It stretches for around seven kilometres and there is a wide paved traffic-free area that runs down the middle of the boulevard. Ornamental fountains add to the aesthetic appeal, and there are numerous benches where you can stop for a rest if required. Visit in the mornings or evenings, when the temperatures are cooler, and you’re sure to spot other sports enthusiasts taking a stroll or enjoying a jog.
