Sarah W Lee is based out of Seattle but when you ask her friends where she lives, their response is “on an airplane”. In a recent three month span, she flew 89,083 miles, which is going around the equator 3.6 times. She does this because her passions are exploring the planet (from the comfort of Egyptian cotton sheets), finding the best food the world has to offer, and sharing it with you. Her favorite destinations are still skewed towards Asia since she was based out of Hong Kong for almost seven years working in the finance world. In her mind, some of the best beaches in the world are in the Maldives and the best powder in the world is in Niseko, Japan. She is also a fan of anyplace with great food and has flipped her own itinerary upside down just to make the last lunch at El Bulli. If you’re a food fanatic, she has you covered – from securing tables at Michelin-starred restaurants to giving directions to secret hole-in-walls that only locals know about.

LET’S GO ON AN ADVENUTRE!

” I have had the joy of traveling with Adventures with Sarah many times, from Thailand, to Turkey, and many places in between. I choose to book with AWS because I can rely on a tour that is paced well, varied in activities, with great food and even greater guides. As a frequent traveler to Europe, I really enjoy AWS tours due to a small group size and the opportunity to go in depth into a region and really experience the culture of the area I’m visiting. And every time, with every group, I meet fellow travelers who are now friends. Adventures with Sarah is a tour company that I would recommend without hesitation. In fact, I have 3 tours booked for this year! Betsy McGregor after multiple tours with Adventures with Sarah
” I have been visiting friends and showing them my photos from the Piemonte tour. I was telling them how great it was to become immersed in this area and see things you would not normally have the opportunity to do or know about. Having a caring and inquisitive guide who delights in sharing where she lives brings so much to the experience. Go visit Piemonte with Lisa- you will have such an amazing time and fond memories to share and relish! Patricia Eagan after a tour in Piedmont, Italy with Lisa
” Lisa Anderson is a phenomenal guide. Not only was the tour amazing, it was made amazing by Lisa. So now Lisa holds top honors as my very most favorite travel guide ever! What set Lisa apart from all the other guides I have traveled with over the years? I believe first of all, it is her warm and welcoming style that focuses on making everyone feel like they are part of her family. She works hard to ensure that everyone’s needs are met. And the tour itself was amazing. It was my first “staycation“ offered by a tour company, and it appealed to me for the reasons you can imagine: more in -depth understanding of the area, more relaxed pace; I truly think it’s my new preferred travel method. The itinerary was well planned and well chosen. We really felt like we were part of Lisa‘s family at every restaurant and establishment we went to. She knew the menu items and wine list and was patient in providing suggestions or changing the menu. That does not happen with a large tour group. A favorite itinerary item was the Donkey Paleo, which was so much fun. Hilarious. Although it was blazing hot in the sun, it was completely enjoyable and Lisa, of course, being Lisa, did a good job and making sure we were well hydrated. It was awesome! I only wish that more people knew about Lisa and this amazing Piedmonte Staycation so that many could enjoy this unique and wonderful travel experience with Lisa. I know I will do everything I can to spread the word amongst my travel friends. Dagney Smith after a tour in Piedmont, Italy with Lisa

“ Fantastic look at more "out of the way" spots and wonderful experiences of food and wine. No crowds, just the Sicilian countryside and lovely towns. Traveling in April was fantastic with all the wildflowers. And walking on Mama Etna's shoulders was a highlight! ” Barbara B. Sicily Pleasures tour
“ It really was a wonderful trip. This was our first group trip, and the size was just right. We all got along well which was a bonus. Everything was smooth, and Sarah had picked out some really wonderful things for us to do. I felt like we were getting "sneak peeks" of special things regular tourists don't get to do. We were willing participants for her to try out new things on this trip. The hotels were lovely, and the wine lunches perfect! There was a good balance of planned activities and free time which I appreciated. I will definitely be looking for more trips to go on with Adventures with Sarah! ” Leslie P. Sicily Pleasures tour
“ Good accommodations in the heart of all important areas. Food experience was excellent with incentive to try new foods. Sarah is very personable and has each tour member's concerns and needs in mind. Love the small groups. ” Larry C. Sicily Highlights tour
“ We had a great time! Perfect mix of free time and planned group excursions/tours. The food was amazing! Our accommodation was comfortable and our views were unforgettable! I would book another trip with this company. ” Jen R. Dalmatian Staycation tour
“ My husband and I had a great time touring Dalmatia with Sarah and the local guides that joined us. A favorite activity was sailing on a traditional sail boat from the island of Vis. Lovely group of travelers and many memories made! ” Dawn R. Dalmatian Staycation tour
“ Food and wine blitz in beautiful areas of Slovenia and Croatia. You will appreciate it most if you are a true wine lover. Meetings with young enthusiastic, creative winemakers were the highlight. ” Betsy W. Harvest tour
“ We had a wonderful trip with no issues at all. Gorgeous area, plenty of delicious food, perfect weather and knowledgeable guide! ” John G. Harvest tour
“ What a perfect way to get back into European travel. It was obvious from the start that Trish had put her heart and soul into the planning of the Hidden Paris tour. It was a great mix of adventures and I throughly enjoyed my travel group, who became like family, and it was obvious to see why most had traveled with adventures with Sarah before, Our local guide, Julian, was excellent and it was fun finally getting to also meet Sarah and sons. Merci beaucoup, Trish for this great time and I hope to travel with you again in the future. ” Leslie A. Paris Staycation tour
“ A thoroughly enjoyable trip. George, our leader, was super-knowledgeable, helpful, energetic, and fun. His knowledge of people and places gave us experiences we couldn't have duplicated on our own. The itinerary was great - I thought the pace was good and we had a variety of experiences. The only thing I didn't like was that the weather in late April was rather chilly and often wet, more so than I expected. However, traveling later in the spring would have meant missing Orthodox Easter, which was the highlight of the trip for me. We spent it in a rural village, and participating in the villagers' traditions was a rare privilege that I'll never forget. So take an umbrella and some warm clothes and prepare for a special experience. Maybe you'll get the sunshine that we mostly didn't get! ” Melissa M. Romania tour
“ Our guide Susanna was both professional and thoughtful. She cared for our health and happiness! I had some health issues and was treated with kindness and help! Our accommodations were both comfortable and clean. The bus driver was fearless and professional. I will travel with Susanna again! ” Melva O. Sicily Pleasures tour
“ This was a wonderful trip! Susanna was such a wonderful tour guide, thoughtful, funny, informative. I can’t imagine a better guide for this trip! Our accommodations were wonderful as were all the varied activities and dining experiences. I enjoyed the other travelers in our group and felt as if we were family. I have made new friends that I will keep in touch with. Thank you! ” Anne B. Sicily Pleasures tour
“ We had a wonderful tour with our guide Susanna and fellow travelers. The tour was well planned out touching on most all the main destinations in Sicily. Susanna was super well organized, kind and considerate and a lot of fun to travel with. She was a great communicator before, during and after the tour and was helpful with day to day needs like finding laundry service, restaurants and transport to the airport. The local guides, meals, accommodations, etc were all top notch. We had a great small group of 7 travelers that all got on very well. The spacious van we used for traveling was very comfortable and the driver Giuseppe was highly skilled at driving the chaotic streets in Sicily’s cities and towns. We highly recommend booking a tour with Adventures with Sarah and especially with Susanna Perrucchini!! ” Randal D. Sicily Highlights tour
“ In short, we will travel with AWS again and would highly recommend them! Oh!! We also felt that we received far more in value and experience than the price for the tour. ” Veneto Slovenia tour

Hi, I’m Sarah!

sarah w lee travel

Thanks for stopping by!

I’m a writer and entrepreneur on a mission to see every country in the world.

But, traveling wasn’t always a part of my life.

Growing up in a lower-middle-class American household, my family didn’t have the money to travel by plane. I didn’t know how vast the world is, and how much I could discover by believing in what could be.

That is, until I first saw a photo of Barcelona.

It was on a study abroad website, and I checked that webpage every day throughout my senior year of high school. I knew, no matter what I did in life, I had to make it there someday.

My First International Trips

sarah w lee travel

Fast forward to 2015, and I’m buying a plane ticket to Costa Rica. I had no passport, no experience flying, and no clue what I was doing.

I didn’t even know how to go through airport security, or that checked bags can only weigh 50 pounds each!

I only knew that I had to push myself and get out of my comfort zone, because if I didn’t, I never would.

That trip changed my life forever. I got to intern at two nonprofits, live with a host mom, and travel solo.

I went from being an unbearably shy girl who always played it safe, to a spontaneous traveler with insatiable wanderlust.

sarah w lee travel

Two years later, I was in Barcelona on a semester abroad, fulfilling my dream from seventeen years old. Those four months in Europe further cemented the truth of who I was.

Two weeks of traveling at a time would never be enough. Corporate vacation time would never be enough.

There was nothing that could appeal to me more than life out of my hardshell carry-on, on the road, away from all familiarity and comfort.

Joining the Peace Corps

sarah w lee travel

My dream throughout college was to prime my experiences and résumé in order to become a Peace Corps Volunteer. The selection process is highly competitive, and I put so much pressure upon myself to be extended an offer.

To my relief, Peace Corps hired me to volunteer in Ukraine. I was on Cloud 9, in disbelief that I could be so fortunate. Little did I know, this life change could prove to be unfortunate, as well.

It was when I lived in Ukraine for the first few months of my 27-month contract that I was sexually assaulted by locals in public, and my entire outlook on life changed.

My understanding of what sexual assault is, and how it changes survivors, completely changed.

My perception of foreign aid changed.

My desires for my career and life changed.

I felt so lost, with nowhere to turn.

My dream was dashed, and I had to pick up the pieces of my life.

And with those pieces, I had to build something new.

Building Anew

sarah w lee travel

Throughout this time, I wrote. I wrote fiction, poetry, and I created Sarah L. Travels. Somehow, the writing was the only thing that brought healing.

Writing was, and is, one of the only ways I feel like the woman I am now is not fully broken.

That there’s some part of me that can be salvaged. Made new. And move forward.

As it turns out, traveling does the same.

So, why do I travel?

sarah w lee travel

I travel because I need to remember what I love about living.  About the world. About chance encounters with strangers, that become life’s best memories.

I need to remember that my life is worth something.  And that I deserved better than what’s happened to me over the years.

I travel and I write, because I need healing.

And there’s just something about flying, experiencing new cultures, always being on the go, and my fingers dancing across the keyboard in the middle of the night–that makes me feel whole again.

Until that euphoria goes away, you’ll find me in an aisle seat, writing or researching stocks, with a cup of coffee on my tray table.

On this blog, you’ll find travel guides from where I’ve been, tips on how to see more of the world on less money, and actionable steps to get you on your dream trip.

There’s so much magic that can happen when you drop everything and just  go .

Regardless of your walk of life, who you are, or where you’re from, I deeply believe  travel can change us–if we’re brave enough to let it.

Let’s be brave together.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Explains Why She Claimed the Moon Is Made ‘Mostly of Gases’

Unfortunately, her explanation also didn’t make a whole lot of sense either.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) says she simply “misspoke” when, in a speech to school children this week, she confidently explained that the moon is “made up mostly of gases.”

Speaking at Booker R. Washington High School in Houston before the solar eclipse Monday, Jackson Lee made a series of bizarre remarks in which she also incorrectly referred to the moon as a planet. “A full moon is that complete rounded circle which is made up mostly of gases, and that’s why the question is why or how could we as humans live on the moon?” she said. “Are the gases such that we could do that?”

“The sun is a mighty powerful heat, but it’s almost impossible to go near the sun,” Jackson Lee continued. “The moon is more manageable, and you will see in a moment—not a moment, you will see in a couple of years—that NASA is going back to the moon.”

She went on to say: “We have yet to know whether you can live on the moon. But I don’t know about you, I want to be first in line to know how to live and to be able to survive on the moon—that’s another planet which we’re going to see shortly.”

In a press release promoting the congresswoman’s appearance at the school, her office pointed out that Jackson Lee had previously “served as a member of the Science Committee and the Ranking Member on the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee,” and that she would be there to “highlight the experience” of the eclipse.

As clips of her peculiar comments drew mockery online, Jackson Lee hit back.

Replying on X to one comment shading her moon-is-mostly-gases comment, Jackson wrote: “Obviously I misspoke and meant to say the sun, but as usual, Republicans are focused on stupid things instead of stuff that really matters. What can I say though, foolish thinkers lust for stupidity!”

Some users replied to point out that if that was true, then what she was actually intending to ask (i.e. whether or not human beings could live on the sun) is arguably even more baffling than being under the misapprehension that the moon is made of gas.

Jackson Lee went on to say that Republicans should focus less on calling her out and more on prenatal care, affordable housing, and reducing student debt.

“Also, I care more about these children who would not have experienced the eclipse in this enthusiastic manner,” she added. “And, I care more about protecting the rights of women and children than engaging in this kind of senseless dialogue!”

Strangely, this isn’t the first time Jackson Lee has made a public gaffe related to the moon. While serving on the House Science Committee in 1997, she reportedly asked if the Mars Pathfinder rover had managed to capture images of an American flag planted on the red planet by Neil Armstrong, presumably incorrectly referring to the flag Armstrong planted on the moon in 1969.

Introduction

As a first step, we want to tell you one Russian joke.

In Moscow, one man takes his smartphone and says, “Ok Google, I need to go to the toilet. Where I can find it?”. A voice of the smartphone answers, “Hey man, you are in trouble.”

The toilet problem is very strong in Moscow, and foreign tourists suffer more than Russians. You have almost no chances to find public WC, and no matter are you ready to pay or not. We will give you a few advices on this page. As locals, we know everything about this problem.

Many tourists try to find WC in subway stations. If you follow this idea, you will fail and will lose your time. There are toilets in the Moscow subway, but they are available only for personnel. We do not know any precedent when they let somebody in.

Every year we have a same comedy. The Moscow government declares their new plan of creation public WCs at every station. Every year nothing change. We the Russians usually say in such situation, “a cart is still standing on its place.”

Maps of Moscow WCs

The Google Maps knows a few of WCs, but it is not a decision of the problem.

WCs in trading centres

It is also a good idea. You should remember a few features.

Not every trading centre has own WC. The Sanitary Rules of Russia demand it from every trading centre larger than 10700 square feet (1000 square meters). We also do not know how some trading centres drive a coach and four through. No comments.

The Rules say every trading centre must have a WC, but the Rules do not say how many. So, you will probably get into a situation when there is only one toilet in a large trading centre. In this case, you will need to search for it.

We made a few photos of public WC in one of trading centres in Moscow. See our small gallery below.

WCs in restaurants

There is no any law in Russia that force a restaurant to let everybody using the WC. So, if you enter a restaurant and want to use a toilet, you will need to ask for a permission. Fortunately, Russia is a civilized country, and we never saw a precedent when somebody rejected.

Even if your request is rejected, you will order a cup of coffee, became a client and use the WC. We ask our readers to respect the law and act according to the law.

How to ask about WC in Russian

It is easy. The English word “toilet” sounds very close to the Russian word “tualet”. Even if you say in English, everybody will understand you. Do not hesitate to ask; Russians are usually ready to help.

We have only one advice for this situation. You should show that you a foreigner. If you will not do this, then people will be thinking you a local and will be explaining you something in Russian. Just say something in English to show you are a foreigner, and say the word “toilet”. You will receive an answer by a finger same as it shows the photo on the left.

Of course, it was a joke above. By the way, nowadays, you can find a few monuments to Vladimir Lenin in Moscow, but we do not recommend to follow in the direction he is showing. We the Russians walked in this direction for 74 years, and we still do not understand, where we were going and why.

You can think Russia is a wild country because of this toilet problem. This opinion is wrong. If you visit any private business centre, you will see a fine WC. If you visit a flat of ordinary Russian citizen, you will also find it is clean and in order.

But, if the government is in charge of something, then you will see a long list of problems that are not resolved from year to year. This is Russia.

We write this website to make your voyage to Russia perfect. Read other articles ( look for the list of links below and on the left from the text of every article )
