spain tourist card

The Madrid City Card is the official tourist card of Madrid. It is a card that provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy unique benefits and discounts at around 30 cultural and leisure attractions.

Issued by the City Council, this sightseeing pass also grants visitors unlimited access to the public transportation system for a specific number of days.

You can purchase your Madrid Tourist Card at any of the following Tourist Information Offices:

  • Plaza Mayor: Plaza Mayor, 27
  • Callao: Plaza de Callao, s/n
  • Royal Palace: Corner of Calle de Bailén and Calle de Requena
  • Paseo del Prado: Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo, s/n
  • CentroCentro: Plaza de Cibeles, 1
  • Reina Sofía: Corner of Plaza de Juan Goytisolo and Calle de Santa Isabel

The price of the card depends on the number of days you plan to use it.

Children under 11 years old receive a 50% discount on the price and children under 4 years old do not need the card to enjoy discounts or to travel on public transport for free.

You can start using your Madrid City Card for discounts and benefits as soon as you purchase it from one of the city’s Tourist Information Offices.

One day in Madrid

You can use your Madrid Tourist Card for 1 month after the purchase . The card will be valid for your chosen period (1-5 days) and is based on calendar days, not for 24-hour periods. This means that if you activate it at 11:59 p.m., you will already have used up a full day.

You can enjoy the discounts and benefits by presenting the QR code on your card. You can only use it once in each establishment unless otherwise indicated in the description of the activity.

For any doubt regarding the Madrid City Card, you can call (+34) 915 787 810 or send an email to [email protected].

What are the benefits of the Madrid Tourist Card?

Prado Museum is one of my top 3 art favorite galleries in Madrid

The official Madrid sightseeing pass offers multiple benefits and discounts in the top-rated museums and other cultural and leisure attractions .

These are the ones that, in my opinion, are more interesting for most tourists. Just like in other tourist cards from cities all around the world, many attractions are included that may not be of as much interest to visitors staying only a few days in the city. Nevertheless, you can check out all the discounts on the official website .

  • Prado Museum: Free admission every day during the last two opening hours.
  • Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: 10% discount on admission and preferential access
  • Reina Sofía Museum: Preferential Access
  • Faro de Moncloa Observation Deck: 50% discount on the ticket price
  • Almudena Cathedral Museum: Free audio guide and 10% discount in-store (purchases over €20)
  • Wax Museum: 15% discount on the ticket price
  • Amusement Park: 20% discount on the ticket price and for 3 companions
  • Zoo Aquarium: 30% discount on the ticket price and for 3 companions.
  • MAMMA MIA Musical: 10% discount.
  • Matilda, The Musical: 10% discount.
  • Royal Palace: Preferential access

Metro Madrid

The Madrid City Card includes unlimited and free transportation within the city, including the metro network (Zone A), suburban trains (Zones 0 and A), city buses (all blue city bus lines), and BiciMAD e-bikes for a period of up to 5 consecutive days.

Just keep in mind that the 24-hour Airport Express shuttle bus line is not covered.

The Madrid Tourist Card can be a useful resource for tourists who want to explore the capital intensively, but it may not always be cost-effective.

In my opinion, if you meet these two conditions, my recommendation would be NOT to purchase the tourist pass:

  • The primary purpose of your trip is to visit the major tourist attractions of the capital, not every corner of the city.
  • You won’t be using public transportation excessively, considering that in Madrid you can walk to many attractions in the historic center, and the weather is suitable for strolling around the city.

From an economic standpoint, the card is not that worth it as discounts are not that high , and many attractions can currently be visited for free without needing the card on certain days/times.

Additionally, there are 10-journey passes available for public transportation, which should suffice without the need for unlimited travel.

I do find the fast pass for skipping lines at attractions interesting, but you will have to decide if it is worth paying the card’s price to save some waiting time. In this case, it can be useful to invest some time in good planning and visit the most popular attractions during less crowded hours.

spain tourist card

In conclusion, the Madrid Tourist Card can be an attractive option for certain visitors who want to explore the city extensively, offering the convenience of unlimited public transportation access, discounts, and priority entry to popular attractions all in one card.

However, for the average tourist, it may not be as economically beneficial. It’s essential to weigh the cost against the potential time and convenience savings, especially if your primary goal is to visit the city’s major attractions rather than every corner of it.

2 thoughts on “Madrid Tourist Card: Is It Worth It?”

The worst thing about the Madrid City Card is that it is not sold at Atocha Renfe station. Esmadrid SA assumes that all tourists only arrive by air. If I arrive in Madrid by AVE Renfe, I will need to buy a Metro ticket to a Tourist Information office. For tourists who don’t know Madrid, this can be a big challenge. Also visitors with luggage will have to wander with it to find the place. If I could buy the Madrid City Card in Atocha, I could use it immediately to get to my hotel. This is a very clumsy oversight by the company.

I’ll talk about what it is, the benefits it offers, how much it costs, where to buy it, and how to use it like a pro – as well as who actually may not need to get this to still have a great trip.

What is the Valencia Tourist Card?

The Valencia Tourist Card is a card for tourists (surprising from the name, I know) that’s designed to give you unlimited access to Valencia’s public transportation, free or discounted admission to many museums and monuments, tasty discounts at restaurants, shops, and more – including some free food and drinks!

Basically, this nifty little card is more than just a piece of plastic – it’s your golden ticket to experience the best of Valencia without the headache of juggling multiple tickets or fumbling for change in your pocket.

And it’s super easy to get your hands on one too. Simply buy the Valencia Tourist Card online right here and pick it up at any Tourist Info Office at the airport or around the city.

MY SUGGESTION: Picking up your Valencia Tourist Card at the airport is by far the best option, in my opinion, as it means your metro ride from the airport will be free. And I think we can all agree that saving €4.80 immediately is a great way to start any trip!)

Benefits of the Valencia Tourist Card

1. free public transportation.

With the Valencia Tourist Card, you’ll have unlimited access to buses, trams, and the metro across the entire city. Whether you want to explore the historic old town, lounge on the city’s sunny beaches, or feast on the best paella, you can do it all without spending an extra cent on Valencia’s public transport system.

And as I just mentioned, even the trip from the airport to the city center is covered by metro, a 25-minute journey that’s normally €4.80 each way – isn’t that convenience at its finest?

Valencia bus where you can use your Valencia tourist card

2. Free Entry to Museums and Monuments

Art lovers, history buffs, and curious souls, rejoice! The Valencia Tourist Card opens the doors to a world of knowledge and culture without the usual entry fees.

In particular, some of the places that will give you free entry include:

  • La Lonja (The Silk Exchange), Valencia’s UNESCO World Heritage site
  • The Archaeological Crypt of the Prison of San Vicente
  • Torres de Serranos and Torres de Quart
  • Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia
  • La Almoina Archaeological Museum
  • Las Fallas Museum
  • The Museum of Natural Science
  • Valencia History Museum
  • … and more!

With so much to see, you’ll be grateful for the freedom to explore at your own pace.

3. Discounts at Other Attractions

While freebies are great, this card also lets you get some pretty impressive discounts at various sights all over Valencia. These include:

  • Valencia Cathedral, the Miguelete (Bell Tower) and the Holy Grail (20% off)
  • IVAM – Valencian Institute of Modern Art (50% off)
  • Everything at the City of Arts and Sciences – meaning it includes the Science Museum and the Oceanogràfic aquarium (10% off)
  • Marqués de Dos Aguas Palace and the Ceramics Museum inside (50% off)
  • Bullfighting Museum (50% off)
  • … and a ton more on top of these.

As you can probably tell, depending on how packed your Valencian itinerary is, you’re in for some pretty great savings here.

City of Arts and Sciences a place you can visit using Valencia tourist card

4. Discounts at Restaurants and Shops, and More

Who doesn’t love a good deal? Your Valencia Tourist Card doubles as a discount card at selected restaurants, shops, and tourist services, with up to 35% off at places that offer this.

You can savor a mouth-watering paella with a side of savings, snag some unique souvenirs without breaking the bank, or even rent a bike in Valencia for less to pedal your way around this picturesque city.

5. Two Free Tapas and Two Free Drinks

That’s right, as a little extra bonus, if you get the 24-, 48- or 72-hour card, you’ll be entitled to get two free tapas with an (alcoholic!) drink!

6. Free City Map and Guide

As if all that wasn’t enough, the Valencia Tourist Card also comes with a free city map and guide. No more getting lost in translation or navigation!

This handy guide will help you plan your route, learn about the city’s main attractions, and even pick up a few local tips and recommendations.

a tourist holding a map

7-day Valencia Tourist Card

For those really wanting to see the ins and outs of this city, there’s also a seven-day Valencia tourist card. It gets you all the same great discounts at museums, monuments, stores, restaurants and more. In fact, you’ll actually get some extra bonuses like free entry to certain places that are discounted with the other cards, like the Cathedral and its Museum and the IVAM.

That said, keep in mind that this card doesn’t include free public transport, which is why it’s priced a bit differently from the others.

Valencia Tourist Card for Children

Don’t worry, they haven’t forgotten about the little explorers! There’s a special Valencia Tourist Card tailored for children aged 6 to 12.

It comes with all the same benefits, but at a lower price, because who doesn’t believe in nurturing the next generation of world travelers!

How Much Does the Valencia Tourist Card Cost?

Now onto the million-dollar question – or should we say, the less-than-a-fancy-dinner question. The Valencia Tourist Card is a steal, considering all the benefits you’ll get.

Prices vary depending on the duration of the card and while you can c heck here for more information on the cost of each card, the summary of this is:

  • The 24-hour Valencia Tourist Card comes in at just €15 for adults and €12.75 for children.
  • The 48-hour Valencia Tourist Card is a bargain at €20 for adults and €17 for children.
  • The 72-hour Valencia Tourist Card is the ultimate deal at €25 for adults and €21.25 for children.
  • The 7-day Valencia Tourist Card, with its extra discounts (but no free public transport) costs €12 for adults and €10.20 for kids.

Imagine, for less than the cost of a fancy meal, you get unlimited transportation, free entry to museums and monuments, discounts galore…and some free tapas and drinks on the side!

Where Can I Buy a Valencia Tourist Card?

You’ll be glad to know that purchasing a Valencia Tourist Card is a breeze. The easiest way is to buy it online before your trip and then pick up your card from the Tourist Info Office at the airport or in the city center when you arrive.

In fact, you can easily buy your Valencia Tourist card right here!

And guess what? If you’re already in Valencia, you can also buy the card online and then pick it up directly from any Tourist Info Office.

In addition to the airport (which is the easiest and quickest option if you’ve bought it before arriving), the offices are also located at major points throughout the city, including the airport, train stations, and central squares. And yes, they’ll be thrilled to see you!

How Does the Valencia Tourist Card Work?

You’re all set with your Valencia Tourist Card. But how does it work, you ask? It’s as easy as uno, dos, tres!

The card is activated the first time you use it, whether that’s hopping on a bus, entering a museum, or using a discount. From then, it’s valid for the duration you chose – 24, 48, or 72 hours.

Remember, the clock starts ticking from the first use, so plan your itinerary wisely to make the most out of your card.

Where Can I Use the Valencia Tourist Card?

The Valencia Tourist Card is your trusty sidekick all across the city. Here are some of the main places you can use it:

1. Public Transportation

The Valencia Tourist Card has you covered on the city’s buses, trams, and metro lines, including the trip from the airport to the city center. With this card in your pocket, you’re free to roam the city at your leisure!

Metro one of the transportation that you can use Valencia tourist card

2. Museums and Monuments

Let the cultural adventure begin! Your Valencia Tourist Card grants you free access to a plethora of the city’s museums and monuments.

These include the Museum of Sciences, the Fallas Museum, and the Almoina Archaeological Centre, among many others.

3. Restaurants and Shops

Feeling peckish or ready for a shopping spree? The Valencia Tourist Card gives you a smorgasbord of discounts at selected restaurants and shops around the city.

So go ahead, treat yourself to a delicious paella or grab some unique souvenirs to remember your trip.

Bikes in the Turia Gardens is one of you must consider to use when you have Valencia Tourist Card.

Is the Valencia Tourist Card Worth It?

In my opinion, if you plan to see many of the main sights around Valencia and will be getting public transport when doing so, especially to and from the airport, then the Valencia Tourist Card is definitely worth it thanks to the free public transport and free entry to many places on offer.

I mean, who doesn’t fancy saving money while savoring all the sights, sounds, and flavors of this vibrant city?

Think about it. With free public transportation, you’ll be zipping around the city without spending an extra cent. With free entry to museums and monuments, you’ll soak up the rich culture and history of Valencia without breaking the bank.

And let’s not forget the discounts at restaurants, shops, and tourist services – who doesn’t love a good deal?

In short, if you plan to explore the city extensively, the Valencia Tourist Card is not just worth it; it’s a no-brainer!

Who Shouldn’t Get the Valencia Tourist Card?

Now, I’ve sung the praises of the Valencia Tourist Card, but it’s also true that not every deal suits every traveler. So, who might not find the card as beneficial?

You may want to think twice about getting this if you fall into one of the following groups:

  • If you’re only planning a quick stop in Valencia , or if your idea of a perfect vacation is lounging at the beach all day (no judgment here, by the way), then you might not need the Valencia Tourist Card.
  • If your itinerary doesn’t include a lot of museum-hopping , then the benefits of the card might not outweigh the cost.
  • If you don’t think you’ll be taking public transport that often , you might not find yourself getting the full benefits.

Honestly, if you plan to get the metro to and from the airport (which I always do) and think you’ll go to a couple of the main tourist attractions, like a museum or other historical site, then you’ll easily hit the point where the Valencia Tourist Card will be well worth it for you.

Throw in some of the restaurant discounts or getting some savings on a tour or bike rental in Valencia, and you’ll be laughing.

Of course, it’s up to you depending on how you think you’ll be traveling in the city but, overall, it’s going to be a great deal for many visitors.

How Do I Use the Valencia Tourist Card on Public Transport?

Using your Valencia Tourist Card on public transport is a cinch! For buses, simply show your card to the driver as you board. For trams and the metro, just swipe your card on the card readers located at the entrance.

Remember, your card covers all zones within the city, including the trip from the airport to the city center. So, whether you’re heading to the beach, returning from a night out, or journeying from one attraction to the next, your Valencia Tourist Card has got you covered.

How Do I Use the Valencia Tourist Card at Attractions?

As if the Valencia Tourist Card couldn’t get any easier to use, here’s how it works at attractions: Simply present your card at the ticket office of the museum or monument you’re visiting. The friendly staff will then grant you free entry – it’s like having a VIP pass to the city’s cultural treasures!

And remember, there’s no limit to the number of attractions you can visit during the validity of your card. So go ahead, indulge your curiosity, immerse yourself in the rich history of Valencia, and let each new discovery be a story to tell.

How Do I Use the Valencia Tourist Card at Restaurants?

Ready to tantalize your taste buds with Valencia’s culinary delights? Using your Valencia Tourist Card at participating restaurants is as simple as pie… or should we say, paella?

When it’s time to pay, just show your card to the staff. They’ll apply the discount to your bill, and voila! You can enjoy your delicious meal knowing you’ve bagged yourself a bargain.

Just make sure to check in advance if the restaurant accepts the card – you can find a list of participating places in your free city guide.

Guide to Spain’s travel rules: what are the entry requirements for foreign tourists?

Here is an overview of the current restrictions on visitors coming from the european union, the united kingdom and the rest of the world.

Hugo Gutiérrez

The summer season has arrived and Spain is hoping for an influx of foreign visitors to revitalize its struggling tourism and hospitality sectors. While an uptick in domestic travel is helping, businesses know that the numbers will only add up when the international visitors show up.

Turistas británicos llegan al aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca el pasado 1 de julio

Due to coronavirus measures in place, the options for travel to Spain will depend on the reasons for the trip (whether it’s for an essential purpose or for leisure), on the country of origin (part of the European Union or not) and on the visitor’s vaccination status.

But the differences in international mobility will most particularly depend on the visitor’s place of origin. Travel within the EU will be aided by the Digital Covid Certificate , which has been approved for use from July 1 and which Spain is already issuing.

Provided below are the answers to a few common questions about travel to Spain in the coming months.

Are there any restrictions on travel within the EU?

Movement within the EU is allowed, and the access requirements are the same across the territory. To ensure this, Brussels has developed a system known as the Digital Covid Certificate or Digital Green Pass (or more popularly as the vaccine passport), which lets bearers easily prove that they meet the conditions for entering another member state: either being fully vaccinated (the last dose must have been administered at least 14 days before travel), or having recovered from Covid-19, or being in possession of a negative diagnostic test (either PCR or antigen) taken 48 hours before arrival. This certificate is issued by national authorities in the national language and in English, and can be used in all member states.

Depending on the epidemiological situation, travelers from some parts of Europe will not be required to show evidence of vaccination, testing or recovery. These are the areas marked green in the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control’s traffic light system.

Are there non-EU countries whose residents may travel restriction-free?

There is a list of countries and special regions whose residents are not affected by the temporary restriction on non-essential travel to the EU due to their good control of the pandemic. They are Albania, Australia, South Korea, United States, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Rwanda, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, China and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao (subject to the principle of reciprocity). Visitors from these parts of the world will not be asked for proof of testing, vaccination or recovery. The United Kingdom was on this list as well, but this is changing on Friday due to a spike in infections in recent weeks.

What are the requirements for UK residents?

Starting on Friday, Spain will demand a negative diagnostic test (” NAAT type, e.g TMA, PCR, LAMP & NEAR ,” not antigen tests ) or proof of full vaccination from UK travelers, due to concerns over the delta variant of the coronavirus . These test results must have been issued within 48 hours of arrival into Spain. (Full information is available here at the gov.uk website.)

Is leisure travel to Spain from other non-EU countries allowed?

Visitors from other non-EU countries coming to Spain for leisure purposes must show proof of vaccination with one of the vaccines authorized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or the World Health Organization (WHO), with the second dose administered at least 14 days before travel. Non-vaccinated travelers will not be allowed into Spain for tourism, even if they have a negative diagnostic test or have recovered from Covid-19, or if they received a vaccine that has not been approved by the EMA or WHO.

What about children who are not being vaccinated yet?

Children under 12 traveling with an adult who has been immunized with an EMA or WHO-approved vaccine may freely enter Spain.

Are there any exceptions?

Yes. The Spanish government may leave out countries where new coronavirus variants pose a health risk. This is already happening with India, whose residents may not come to Spain on tourism even if they have been fully vaccinated. In practice, leisure trips from Brazil and South Africa are also off-limits since only flights carrying Spanish or Andorran nationals (or passengers in transit) are allowed into the country.

Are any additional documents necessary?

Yes. Regardless of the country of origin, travelers coming in by air or sea, including those in transit and children under 12, must fill out a health form available on www.spth.gob.es or via the mobile app Spain Travel Health. This will generate a QR code that must be shown before departure and at arrival.

Is The Valencia Tourist Card Worth It? (Guide To Pros And Cons)

Valencia Tourist Card

Wondering whether to buy a Valencia Tourist Card for your city break? Find out what’s included and whether it’s worth it in this informative guide.

If you’ve been following my blog recently, you’ll have seen I fell head over heels in love with the city of Valencia in Spain. It’s a beautiful city, filled with history, great restaurants and quirky architecture. It’s perfect for a sunshine-filled getaway, particularly with its huge beach just a short bus ride from the city centre.

Before visiting, I ordered a Valencia Tourist Card . There are options of cards for 24, 48 or 72 hours, as well as another for 7 days.

The card includes free public transport within the city centre, complimentary entry or discounts at the key attractions, museums and restaurants, plus a few other freebies too – including tapas and drinks.

I’ll admit that part of my reason for wanting it was the ease of getting around. It covers journeys to and from Valencia Airport, as well as journeys within the city and down to the beach.

City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia

So time to give an honest account of what I thought of it, how it works, whether I’d recommend it and how to order one if you’re visiting the city soon.

Planning your trip to Valencia? Here are a few quick highlights:

List Image

What is the Valencia Tourist Card?

This special card includes all public transport within the city, as well as to the beach and airport. There’s a mammoth list of attractions it’s valid at, offering free entry or discounted tickets. You can buy cards for different durations, depending on how long you’ll be visiting for. There are cards for 24, 48 or 72 hours, as well as another for 7 days.

If you’re flying to Valencia I’d recommend ordering a card online in advance, then collecting at the airport. You just need your order number and email address to pick it up.

Alternatively, you can collect it from the tourist office within City Hall, or have it delivered to your hotel. Kids aged 6-12, over-65s and students can get a 15% discount off, but you’ll have to go to the tourist office to buy the card.

How much is a Valencia Tourist Card?

As mentioned, there are cards for 24, 48 or 72 hours, as well as another for 7 days. The prices are as follows:

24-hour Valencia Tourist Card: 15 EUR

48-hour Valencia Tourist Card: 20 EUR

72-hour Valencia Tourist Card: 25 EUR

7 day Valencia Tourist Card (without transport): 12 EUR

I usually buy things like this using Get Your Guide – a tour booking website I’ve used lots on my travels, and wholeheartedly trust. I took a few tours with them during my trip to Valencia, including a historical walking tour and a food tour , and they were fab. They occasionally offer discounts if you book via them too!

What attractions are included for free with the Valencia Tourist Card?

There are quite a few that are free with the card, including…

Lonja de la Seda – Valencia’s ancient silk exchange

Museo de Historia – Valencia’s history museum

Museo Fallero – Museum dedicated to Valencia’s famous Fallas Festival

Torres de Serranos and Torres de Quart – Old city gates (great views!)

Museo de Ciencias Naturales – Museum of natural sciences

Museo de la Ciudad – City museum

Museo del Arroz – Rice museum

L’Almoina – Archaeology museum

Without the card, most have an entry fee of around 2 EUR. It’s not much, but if you’re thinking of visiting quite a few during your visit, the tourist card will be more economic way to see the icity. You can see the full list of Valencia tourist card attractions here .

Exterior of Torres de Serranos, Valencia

Which attractions can I get discounts at with the Valencia Tourist Card?

While there are plenty that are included complimentary, if the attraction isn’t on that list, it’s still likely to be offered at a discounted price with the card. I’ve picked out a few highlights but there are absolutely loads more!

15% off Museu de les Ciències (Valencia Science Museum)

15% off Oceanogràfic (Valencia Aquarium)

15% off Hemisfèric (Valencia IMAX Cinema)

15% off Bioparc (Valencia Zoo)

10% off Valencia Cathedral

10% off Jardín Botánico (Valencia Botanical Gardens)

It’s also worth checking out some of the discounts on rentals in the city too. For example, you can use the card to get 20% off renting a bike in the city, or 10% off jet-ski rental on Malvarrosa Beach.

Valencia, Spain

Can I use my Valencia Tourist Card on any tours?

Yes! I think this is a really great perk of the card. From a discount on the tourist bus (yay for hop on, hop off life!), to bike tours, a nosey around Valencia Football Club and even a paella cooking class, there are lots of little extras that are included with the card. You’ll need to check timings as many of them only run on certain days of the week, and then book your spot in advance.

Here are a few tours that caught my eye…

20% off 4-hour Valencia Family Tour

15% off bike tours

10% off Guided tour of Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía

10% off Mestalla Forever Tour (Valencia Football Club)

10% off paella workshops

2 EUR off València Bus Turístic (hop on, hop off)

10% off Albufera Experience (jeep and boat trip)

Seafood paella in Valencia

10% off sunset sailing trip from Malvarrosa Beach

Malvarrosa Beach, Valencia

What about food and drink?

Eating out on holiday can really add up, so it’s worth making use of the discounts on offer at the city’s restaurants and bars. Some of the discounts are 15-20% so it can make a big difference to your bill.

You can use the card at Café de las Horas, Terraza L’Umbracle, El Camarote & the Roof, Casa Isabel, Ocho y Medio, Restaurante Océanos, Ubik Café, La Cigrona and the Hard Rock Café amongst others.

Tapas spread

Did someone mention FREE food?

Not yet but I’m about to!! When you get your Valencia Tourist Card you’ll see a few ads for restaurants in the city where you get complimentary food and drink!

Head to El Corte Ingles for a complimentary tapa and a glass of wine, and then there’s one more voucher valid at a few restaurants around the city.

Anywhere else I can use the Valencia Tourist Card?

I didn’t have the chance to visit (partly because I was busy enjoying the sunshine outside) but the card is also valid at several spas in Valencia including Balneario La Alameda, Olympia Hotel and Spa Las Arenas.

How do I use the Valencia Tourist Card on public transport?

I used my card on several bus, tram and metro journeys. I’d describe Valencia as a walkable city, but if like me, you like to cram a lot in to your trips, you might want to save time by using public transport.

I navigated my way around using Google Maps. You can pop in your destination and select public transport. The app will then show you the best way to get there, including bus numbers and stop names.

Valencia tram

In terms of where you can get to using the card, it covers the Metro in Zones A – D (including to and from Valencia Airport) plus buses and trams in Zone A. As a tourist visiting, it’s very unlikely you’d need to go outside of these areas. When you pick up your card you can check the maps. It also includes bus Line 25 which goes to Albufera.

In terms of using the card, you tap it on the machine by the driver when you board a bus, at the tram stop platform and at the gates to the metro. It’s worth mentioning that if you get the Valencia 7-day tourist card, it doesn’t include public transport (or it didn’t when I visited).

Also, if you don’t opt for a tourist card, I think that the system in the city is similar to others, where you have to pay a cost for a Valencia transport card and top it up with journeys as you go along.

Pretty views in Valencia

So, the big question – is the Valencia Tourist Card worth it?

For me it was definitely worth it. If you’re planning a lot of sightseeing, and want the convenience of using public transport whenever you want, to get wherever you want, then it’s worth it.

I liked that I didn’t have to worry about figuring out metro tickets when I got to the airport, and could hop on public transport around the city whenever my legs got tired!

I also used several of the free entry tickets and a few of the discounts. Free food was a bonus too! I didn’t get the chance to try out any of the tours as I’d already booked a few through Get Your Guide before my trip, but I’d bear it in mind for next time.

Enjoying the view from the top of Torres de Serranos, Valencia

However, if you’re visiting Valencia for a relaxing break, with plans to hang out in the historical city centre, hop from tapas bar to tapas bar and explore on foot, you’ll probably find it cheaper to buy single or return tickets on public transport and pay full price at any attractions. Single tickets on Valencia’s buses start at just 1.50 EUR. Metro lines 3 and 5 go from the airport to the city centre, with a single costing 3.90 EUR.

Sometimes it’s worth paying for the peace of mind, and a card like this definitely brings that! It really depends on how much you want to do during your trip!

The 6 Best Travel Cards for Spain in 2024

If you’re traveling to Spain, a travel money card can make spending and withdrawing cash when you’re away cheaper and more convenient. Different types of travel money cards, including travel debit cards, prepaid travel cards and travel credit cards, are available to support different customer needs. The right one for you will depend on your personal preference and how you like to manage your money.

Read on for all you need to know, including a closer look at travel money card types, some great options to consider, and the sorts of fees you need to think about when you choose.

Wise – good value debit card for Spain

Before we get into details about different travel money card options, let’s start with the Wise card as a good all-round option that allows you to hold and spend euros - the official currency in Spain - as well as a diverse range of other world currencies.

Wise accounts can hold and exchange 40+ currencies, and you can get a linked Wise card for a one time delivery fee. Top up your account in USD and switch to EUR before you travel, so you know your travel money budget in advance - or if you’d prefer, you can simply allow the card to automatically switch currencies as and when you need it. All currency conversion uses the mid-market exchange rate, with low fees from 0.43%. Plus you can get EUR bank account details - as well as local account details for USD and up to 9 other currencies - to get paid conveniently to your Wise account .

Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using the Wise travel money debit card , to help you decide if it's suitable for you.

What is a travel money card?

A travel money card can be used for payments online and in stores, and for cash withdrawals, just like your regular bank card can be. However, with a travel money card you’ll find the features and fees have been optimized for international use. That might mean you get a better exchange rate compared to using your normal card overseas, or that you run into fewer fees. Some travel cards also have options to earn cashback and rewards when you use your card internationally.

6 travel money cards for Spain compared

We’ll look at each of these card options in a little more detail in just a moment, but let’s start with an overview of how 6 top travel money cards for Spain line up side by side:

As you can see, the features of different travel money cards can vary pretty widely. In general travel debit cards can be convenient and often fairly cheap to use, while travel credit cards can offer some nice perks like cashback or rewards - but do mean you might run into interest and late payment charges, depending on how you choose to pay.

Travel debit cards often let you top up a linked account online or through an app, so you can set your budget and can’t spend more than you intend. Travel credit cards on the other hand let you spend to your card limit, and then repay the amount over a few months if you’d prefer to. Which is best for you will come down to how you like to manage your money - we’ll dive into a few more details about each card type, next.

What are different types of travel cards?

Broadly speaking, US customers are able to select a travel money card from either a regular bank or a specialist provider, which may be a travel debit card, travel prepaid card or a travel credit card. We’ll walk through what each travel money card type is, and pick out a couple of good card options, so you can compare and choose.

  • Travel debit cards
  • Travel prepaid cards
  • Travel credit cards

1. Travel Debit Cards for Spain

Travel debit cards are usually offered by specialist providers, with linked digital accounts you can use to hold and convert a currency balance. While different cards have their own features, travel debit cards can usually be topped up easily online and through an app, with the option to see your balance and get transaction notifications through your phone too. That makes it easier to keep on top of your money, no matter where in the world you are.

Travel debit card Option 1: Wise

Wise is a good value travel money debit card for Spain. There’s no fee to open a Wise account, and just a small delivery fee for your Wise card, with no minimum balance and no monthly charge. You just pay low Wise fees from 0.43% when you convert currencies, and transparent ATM fees when you exhaust the monthly free transactions available with your account.

  • No fee to open a Wise account , no minimum balance requirement
  • 9 USD one time fee to get your Wise card
  • 2 withdrawals, to 100 USD value per month for free, then 1.5 USD + 2%
  • Hold EUR and 40+ other currencies, convert between them with the mid-market rate
  • Get local account details to receive EUR, USD and 8 other currencies conveniently

Travel debit card Option 2: Revolut

Revolut has a selection of different account tiers, so you can simply pick the account you prefer - from Standard plans with no monthly fee, to the 16.99 USD/month Metal plan. All Revolut accounts have linked cards, although exactly what type of card you get depends on your account tier. You can hold around 25 currencies including JPY, and convert currencies with the mid-market rate to your plan’s allowance.

  • No monthly fee if you open a Standard Revolut account, or upgrade for up to 16.99 USD/month
  • Card delivery fees may apply depending on your account tier
  • All accounts have some fee free weekday currency conversion with 0.5% fair usage fees after that. Out of hours and exotic currency fees may apply in some cases
  • Standard plan holders can withdraw 400 USD overseas per month for free
  • Hold about 25 currencies, including USD and EUR

Pros and cons of using debit travel cards in Spain

How to choose the best travel debit card for spain.

The best travel debit card for Spain really depends on your personal preferences and how you like to manage your money. If you’ll be traveling widely it makes sense to look for an account with mid-market currency exchange and a large selection of supported currencies as well as EUR, like Wise . Other providers like Revolut can also be a good pick, particularly if you’ll use your account very frequently and would prefer to pay a monthly fee to unlock lots of no fee transactions and extra perks.

Is there a spending limit with a travel debit card in Spain?

Different providers set their own limits for card use. Limits may apply daily, weekly or monthly, and can apply to different types of transactions. You might find you have a limit to the amount of ATM withdrawals you can make per day, for example, or the value of contactless payments - these limits are set for security and can sometimes be managed and changed in the provider’s app.

2. Prepaid Travel Cards for Spain

With a prepaid travel card you’ll need to order a card and add funds, to pay merchants and make cash withdrawals. While prepaid travel cards are usually issued on large global networks - and can therefore be used pretty widely - not all cards are accepted globally, so you’ll need to check network coverage in your destination country.

Prepaid travel card option 1: Bluebird American Express prepaid debit card

You can order a Bluebird prepaid debit card for free online. You’ll then be able to top up in cash or from a bank account. You can also add checks or have funds deposited by others - fees apply for some top up methods. While this card doesn’t allow you to hold foreign currencies, you won’t pay a foreign transaction fee to spend your USD balance abroad, which makes it a good choice when you’re away from home.

  • Get a card for free by ordering online
  • Top up in a range of ways in USD
  • No foreign transaction fee when spending overseas
  • ATM withdrawal fees of 2.5 USD or the equivalent when overseas
  • American Express cards are not always accepted internationally - check coverage before you travel
  • No interest to pay

Prepaid travel card option 2: Discover it Secured

Discover it Secured is a credit card, but we’ve included it in our roundup of prepaid cards because it’s a secured card, which means you’ll need to pay an upfront deposit, and can then spend to that deposit level every month. Clear off your bill in full to avoid interest, and you could build a credit score, earn cashback and get no foreign transaction fees when you spend overseas, too.

  • No annual card fee, although interest charges and late payment fees do apply
  • No foreign transaction fees for spending overseas
  • ATM withdrawal fees may apply including a 10 USD cash advance fee
  • Earn cashback on spending and build credit as you do so
  • Discover network is not always internationally supported - check your destination before you travel

Pros and cons of using prepaid travel cards in Spain

How to choose the best travel prepaid card for spain.

There’s no single best travel prepaid card for Spain - it’ll come down to your personal preference. If you’re looking specifically for a prepaid debit card you can use in Spain with no foreign transaction fee, try the Bluebird card option. However, if a credit card suits you, the Discover it Secured can be a strong pick thanks to the cash back options available.

Is there a spending limit with a prepaid card in Spain?

Different prepaid travel cards set their own limits for spending and withdrawals, which can  vary between currencies. You’ll need to check your card’s terms and conditions carefully to make sure you pick a provider which suits your needs.

3. Travel Credit Cards for Spain

Travel credit cards typically offer some extra international features compared to regular credit cards, such as low or no foreign transaction fees or extra option to earn rewards when you’re abroad. In general, travel credit cards are safe and convenient but can be more expensive compared to using a debit card option. Before you select the right card for you it’s important to check the fees, rates, eligibility rules and interest rates which apply, so you can make sure it’s a good fit for you.

Travel credit card option 1: Capital One Venture Rewards

The Capital One Venture Rewards card has no foreign transaction fees when you spend overseas. There’s also a comparatively low cash advance fee when you use an ATM, at 3 USD or 3% whichever is higher. You’ll need to repay your bill in full every month to avoid fees and interest, but can earn travel rewards and miles on your day to day spending.

  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Earn travel rewards on spending
  • Get extras like lounge access and free travel insurance
  • International spending uses the network exchange rate
  • Variable interest rates which apply if you don’t pay off your bill in full

Travel credit card option 2: Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card has a variable interest rate with no foreign transaction fee to pay. However, you’ll need to pay a 95 USD annual card charge to get your card in the first place. Currency conversion uses the network exchange rate - plus there are benefits and rewards available for cardholders.

  • Variable interest rates and a 95 USD annual fee
  • Check your eligibility and order a card online easily
  • Network exchange rates apply

Pros and cons of using credit cards in Spain

How to choose the best travel credit card for spain.

The best travel credit card for Spain will depend on your personal preferences. If you’re interested in earning rewards and cash back on your overseas spending, a travel rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred could be a good bet as it has no foreign transaction fee and offers rewards on all spending. Whichever card you’re considering you’ll want to weigh up the potential fees you’ll need to pay against the rewards you can earn to make sure it’s worthwhile.

Which cards are accepted in Spain?

It’s important to know that you may find that different card networks are more popular in one country than they may be in another. For example, while Visa and Mastercard are pretty widely accepted globally, other popular US card networks, like American Express and Discover cards are less likely to be accepted in some countries and regions. In most cases it’s best to carry more than one means of payment when you travel - for example a credit card and a specialist travel money card which has been issued on a different network - so that you always have a plan B if your preferred payment method isn’t available.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Spain in 2024

spain tourist card

When traveling to Spain, having a sim card is essential for easy navigation and staying connected. Access to the internet allows you to find the best restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, and share photos with your family on the go.

While roaming is an option, international fees can quickly become expensive. That’s why we recommend either an eSIM or a local sim card for access to affordable local phone rates.

Fortunately, obtaining either option is a breeze in Spain, but it’s helpful to know which one is the best fit for you. This comprehensive guide provides all the information you need to purchase a sim card in Spain, including updated pricing and the top recommendations.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in spain for tourists.

Data in Spain is super cheap. For just 10 EUR you can get a sim card with a massive amount of data that lasts an entire month. I’m not really sure why the main operators offer higher priced plans considering very few users will require more than 25GB of data in a month!

That’s great news for travellers heading to Spain. The 10 EUR prepaid sim card from Orange, Vodafone or Movistar will be absolutely perfect for anyone. However, if I had to pick the best sim card in Spain then I’d go with Vodafone as it offers 5G in all of the main tourist centers in Spain. This means faster internet.

On top of this, they all offer fantastic roaming plans across the EU AND the UK.

If you love eSims then my preferred eSim in Spain is the Airalo Spain eSim . However, due to the huge data plans and low cost nature of the local sim cards I would still recommend picking one up when you arrive in Spain.

Spain Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Spain costs 10 EUR in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Spain will cost between $4.50 USD and $26 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Spain which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $11.50 USD.

In Spain, the main SIM card providers are Orange, Vodafone, and Movistar. Orange is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the country, offering a range of services including mobile, broadband, and TV. How to Get a Sim Card in Spain

Identify mobile providers: Orange, Vodafone and Movistar are your best options in Spain.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Spain

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Spain at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Spain then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Spain have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Orange, Vodafone and Movistar. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Spain are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Spain with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Spain. The Airalo Spain eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $11.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Spain without having to venture outside.

Airalo Spain

Our preferred eSim provider in Spain is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Spain and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Spain eSim uses the Movistar network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Movistar networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Spain.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Spain eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $6.50 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $8.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $11.50 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $18 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $26 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $11.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Spain

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Spain eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Spain eSim uses the Movistar Spainnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Spain

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Spain eSim:

What is an eSim?

The eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card built directly into devices like smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Unlike physical SIM cards, the eSIM doesn’t require insertion or removal.

Instead, the eSIM is seamlessly integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the need for physical SIM card swapping.

eSIM technology brings convenience, flexibility, and simplicity, particularly for frequent travelers or those who switch between mobile networks frequently or travel internationally. It eliminates the hassle of purchasing and inserting physical SIM cards, making it more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on one device.

To activate an eSIM, users can scan a provided QR code or manually enter activation details from their mobile network operator. Once activated, the device can connect to the chosen mobile network and enjoy voice, data, and messaging services just like a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

Using an eSIM provides various benefits:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans, making it ideal for frequent travelers. – Dual SIM functionality: Allows having two active mobile numbers on one device, useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. – Space-saving: Embedded eSIM eliminates the need for a physical SIM card slot, freeing up space for smaller devices or other components. – Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely, without requiring a physical SIM card or store visit. – Future-proofing: As eSIM support expands, users can take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing in mobile connectivity.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Review: Seville tourist cards

Every major city nowadays has a large selection of discount tickets, including Seville. In this article we list for you which discount cards and city passes can be advantageous for you in Seville. In preparation for your Seville city trip, you should realize that the Alcazar Palace of Seville has huge queues during the high season (there is a capacity of 750 visitors). If you do not purchase these tickets in advance, you have the guarantee that you will have to stand in a large queue. The advantage of the passes below is that they all contain skip-the-line tickets for the Alcazar.

In addition, tickets for the cathedral can be useful. This cathedral also has queues (less extreme than the Alcazar) and by booking these tickets online you can avoid the queue. An overview of only the useful discount cards in Seville:

5) Don't: Other Sevilla cards

In addition to these previously mentioned cards like the Sevilla City Pass, there are many other cards in circulation such as the Sevilla Card and Andalusia Card. We do not recommend these cards, as you will probably not earn them back.

Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Spain in 2024

spain tourist card

Planning your trip to Spain and wondering what is the best way to stay connected and get data on your phone when traveling to Spain? You surely don’t want your Spain holiday to get ruined by outrageous roaming charges or slow overseas data roaming plans. This is a complete guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Spain.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a prepaid sim card in Spain, up to date prices as per March 2024, a comparison of the mobile internet providers, the best 4G/5G network, the best e-sim cards for Spain, info about EU roaming, my recommendation and the latest information about international sim cards for Spain.

Being a very experienced world traveler that has continuously been traveling the world now since 2012 I became an expert in finding the best sim cards for traveling abroad. On my trip around the world I have constantly been looking for ways to get connected.

My journey to visit every country in the world  brought me in 2022 for example to more than 60 countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries. Depending on the length of my trip to a country I buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival or get myself an e-sim cards on the internet.

I like to document all my travel tips and that is how writing sim card guides for destinations became a passion. You can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world: USA , Asia ,  Mexico , Costa Rica , Panama , Guatemala , Argentina , Peru , Colombia , Chile ,  South Africa , Vietnam , Hong Kong , Bali ,  New York , Istanbul , Paris , Rome , London , Qatar , Brazil, Turkey , Dubai  and many more.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid sim card and e-sim card advice for your holiday destination. Bookmark me!

Are you flying in to  Madrid Airport or Barcelona Airport ? Then click on the links to get to know everything about buying a sim card on arrival at these Spain airports in 2024.

If you would like to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival in Spain then the airport is the most convenient place to get a sim card. However, sim card deals at airports are always slightly more expensive than in a phone store in the city center.

Why buying a sim card for Spain

Traveling becomes so much more convenient with an active data connection on your phone. It can be as easy as ordering a taxi on the streets, or finding a cool roof top bar or restaurant nearby. Getting directions from navigation apps is so normal, but with a working data connection suddenly becomes a challenge.

But what about emergencies or if you need to access your banking apps? The easiest way to stay connected is an e-sim card, but the best way to stay connected is buying a local prepaid sim card for Spain. Spain sim cards for tourists are not too expensive and it is worth investing a couple dollars to stay online.

Also don't rely on public WiFi, it is not everywhere available and begging for the WiFi password is annoying. Also keep in mind that using the internet on public WiFi is through an unsecured connection. The use of a VPN is recommended to protect your data!

If you don't like to swap your sim card for another one you can use an e-sim card. If your phone is not compatible for an e-sim card then you should look into getting a portable WiFi device. However, I am not a fan, so outdated! See my HONEST review of a pocket WiFi in my article about how to get WiFi abroad .

Buying a prepaid sim card in Spain is simple. Make sure you phone is unlocked, walk into any mobile internet store, ask for a prepaid sim card for Spain, put it in your phone, get it activated and within a couple minutes you are online.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Movistar prepaid sim card for Spain. They have the best 4G/5G network in Spain and have a prepaid sim card deal with 40 GB data for just €10 EUR and you can use the 5G network. A Vodafone sim card would be a second best.

These amazing prepaid sim card deals are only available in stores in Spain.

The cheapest way to stay connected is actually an e-sim card for Spain as they already start from $4.5 USD. With an e-sim card you arrive prepared and have data on your phone as soon as the plane lands. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

E-sim cards are simply much more convenient than local prepaid sim cards as you arrange everything online. For more info check out my list of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Spain in 2024 .

Spain sim cards and free EU roaming

Spain prepaid sim cards in general include free data roaming in the EU. Sometimes it is capped, so always ask when buying a prepaid sim card in Spain. Free EU roaming means the sim card you buy in Madrid or Barcelona can also be used in Paris, Rome or even Stockholm. Free EU roaming on Spain sim cards is great for those that arrive in Spain and travel to more countries in Europe on the same trip.

Read more on free EU data roaming in my article with everything you need to know about buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Europe .

There are actually a couple sim cards for Europe that are great value and you can buy them directly online. Click on the link for a list of the best sim cards for Europe travel .

Mobile internet providers in Spain

Spain has 4 big mobile internet providers that all sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. Orange and Vodafone are the two well known European brands and then there is also Movistar and Mas Movil. Mas Movil operates in Spain under the name Yoigo and phone stores around Spain are called Yoigo, Mas Movil is the mother company.

All mobile internet providers sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. However, you can only get physical prepaid sim cards in stores in Spain. Es-sim cards for tourists are not available, but you can order e-sim cards for Spain on the internet.

Where to buy a sim card for Spain

At any international airport you will find either mobile internet provider stores or book shops selling prepaid sim cards for Spain. If I don't have an e-sim yet looking for a sim card shop is one of the first things I do on arrival. But be aware that buying a sim card at the airport is always more expensive than in the city center.

Buying a sim card at Barcelona Airport

At Barcelona Airport you can find a couple different Spain sim card deals. An Orange sim card for €15 is the best buy and will give you 9 GB data all over Europe and €5 calling credit. For more info on sim cards at Barcelona Airport check out the link above.

Buying a sim card at Madrid Airport

When flying to Madrid Airport you can buy more or less the same Spain sim card deals as at Barcelona Airport. an Orange sim card for traveling in Spain and Europe for €20 with 10 GB data + €10 calling credit. Check the link above for more info about buying a sim card Madrid Airport.

Official phone stores city center

Once you are settled in your hotel simply search for your preferred Spain sim card provider in Google Maps. Mobile phone shops are mostly always clustered in the city center. In Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Madrid it is very easy to find a phone store near your hotel, even in Ibiza and Mallorca there are multiple places that sell Spain sim cards for tourists as well as on the airport of Ibiza and Mallorca.

Convenience stores

You can also buy prepaid sim card at the bigger gas stations and convenience stores. But there won't be any service and you will have to activate the sim card yourself. Not recommended for tourists unless you know what you are doing.

Getting connected when traveling to Spain was never as easy as in 2024. There are multiple e-sim card websites that offer e-sim cards for Spain. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

For more detailed info check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Spain in 2024 .

SimOptions also sells international physical prepaid sim cards for Spain . These will be delivered to your home address before your trip. Local prepaid sim cards can NOT be ordered online, these prepaid sim cards for tourists are only available in the stores in Spain.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Spain in 2024

Prices for prepaid sim cards in Spain are pretty good. All the Spain mobile internet providers are constantly publishing offers. All the below prices are up to date as per March 2024. Prices are in Euros: $1 USD = €0.92 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD.

Movistar prepaid sim card

movistar spain prepaid sim card plans 2024

The Movistar prepaid sim card deals have become A LOT BETTER in 2024. The above offers are great Spain prepaid sim card deals and the Movistar prepaid sim cards are 5G ready. Movistar does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, only physical sim cards are available for tourists. For more info check the  Movistar  website.

Vodafone prepaid sim card

vodafone spain prepaid sim card plans 2024

Also Vodafone updated their prepaid sim prices for 2024 and we all benefit! Great news: Vodafone allows prepaid sim card costumers to use 5G network.

For €10 EUR you get 50 GB data. All the prepaid sim card packages offer EU roaming, but EU data roaming is limited to 19 GB outside of Spain. Unfortunately in Vodafone stores in Spain they only sell physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are NOT available for tourists. For more info and check the Vodafone Spain website.

Orange prepaid sim card

orange spain prepaid sim card plans 2024

These are the latest Orange Spain prepaid sim card plans available for tourists. They have 3 different data packages available. Free EU roaming is included in the above data packages of Orange Spain and packages are valid for 4 weeks.

A little downside of an Orange Spain prepaid sim card is that they are NOT 5G ready, max speed is 4G/LTE. Orange does NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists, only physical prepaid sim cards are available in Orange stores. Check the  Orange website for more info.

Yoigo prepaid sim card

yoigo prepaid sim card prices

Yoigo is a brand of Mas Movil and also operates on the Mas Movil mobile data network.

Their data packages for prepaid sim cards are smaller than all the other mobile internet providers. Yoigo does NOT provide e-sim cards for prepaid users. For more info check the Yoigo  website.

Best 4G/5G mobile data network in Spain in 2024

It is not all about prices for prepaid sim card plans when determining the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Spain. Another important ranking factor is the 4G/5G network in Spain. We are already in 2024, we don't want to get stuck with slow 3G.

Is there 5G in Spain?

Yes, there is 5G in Spain and as of March 2024 it is widespread around the country. Pretty much all the tourist destinations and amazing places to visit are covered with a 5G signal.

A bummer is that most of the Spain mobile internet providers still do not offer 5G data speed for prepaid sim cards. The only who allows 5G for prepaid sim cards in Spain is Vodafone. For more detailed 4G/5G coverage maps of Spain , check the link.

Movistar Spain 4G/5G network map

movistar 4g 5g network coverage map spain 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Spain in 2024.

When comparing the above Spain 4G/5G network coverage maps from all mobile internet providers in Spain we can see that all of them have an excellent 4G/5G network all around the country. Only small details make the difference.

Vodafone claims on their website to have won prices for the best 5G network in Spain, but Traveltomtom's conlcusion after comparing the network coverage maps of Orange, Mas Movil, Movistar and Vodafone is that Movistar has a the most extensive mobile data network and the  best 4G/5G network coverage in Spain in 2024.

That said, all other mobile internet providers have great 4G/5G network coverage in all tourist destinations in Spain.

Best sim card for Spain in 2024

E-sim cards for Spain are an amazingly easy way to get connected when traveling to Spain in 2024 and there are some great e-sim card deals. But when comparing e-sim cards for Spain with local prepaid sim cards in Spain then it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much cheaper.

Downside is that you need to go to a phone store in Spain on arrival. With an e-sim card you are online as soon as the plane lands. Traveltomtom recommends ordering a Spain e-sim card from either  Airalo ,  SimOptions  or  Nomad .

Local prepaid sim cards for tourists are cheap in Spain and for €10 EUR you can already get 50 GB data. Another great thing about Spain prepaid sim cards is that they allow free EU roaming, although most sim cards are capped at around 15 - 20 GB data. Always ask about EU roaming limitation when buying a prepaid sim card in Spain.

When comparing the mobile internet operators in Spain we can see that for 2024 there is very little difference between Mas Movil/Yoigo, Movistar, Vodafone and Orange. All providers have amazing prepaid sim card plans for tourists with a lot of data and all the providers have an excellent 4G/5G mobile data network.

It is a close call between Movistar and Vodafone but Traveltomtom rates Movistar as the best prepaid sim card for Spain in 2024.

Landing on either Barcelona Airport or Madrid Airport you might wanna buy a prepaid sim card for Spain on arrival. It is pricey, but click on the link to read everything about it.

Holiday expert explains how Spain's new £97 daily charge will affect your holiday

Holiday expert explains how Spain's new £97 daily charge will affect your holiday

All has been explained on the new tourist rule that was introduced in spain.

Joshua Nair

Joshua Nair

As the weather gets warmer, a lot of us are beginning to get onto those flight and hotel websites to book a summer getaway, with many often favouring Spain as a nearby holiday location with amazing weather.

It is well documented that the European country is a popular holiday hotspot for Brits , so you can imagine that it was a shock when people found out about the new money law put in place there for tourists.

Spain is a popular choice among Brits for summer getaways. (Getty Stock Photo)

The new law states that Britons must be able to show proof that they have at least €113.40 (£97) per person, per day, during their stay in the country.

It's fair to say that the news hasn't been received well, with many threatening not to go back to the holiday destination following the implemented law.

Chelsea, an expert from cheapholidayexpert.com has explained all the ins and outs of the law, such as what we can do to prepare, how serious it is, and what to do if we don't have the required funds.

How new is this rule?

Well, it turns out that this rule is not new at all, as it has been in effect since 1 January 2022, though back then it was at £85 a day per person, being increased to £93 per day in 2023.

So, there's no reason to be scared, it has been quite standard and in place for a while, though it is under a spotlight now that we're past the COVID years.

Should we blame Brexit?

In short, yes.

As the UK left the EU , Brits don't have the freedom of moving throughout the continent anymore, and have to go through closer, more thorough checks.

This can be anything, such as:

  • Showing you have enough money for your stay
  • Showing proof of accommodation for your stay
  • Showing a return or onward ticket

But this could happen in any EU country, not just being limited to Spain - and with that being said, these rules aren't exclusive to the UK either, instead applying to all third party countries as a standard rule.

It's important that you're ready to show proof of funds upon arrival. (Getty Stock Photo)

How will it affect my holiday?

The Spanish ministry states that: "Foreigners must prove, if required to do so," about proof of funds, meaning that it isn't compulsory for them to check every tourist's bank statement upon arrival.

Think of it as a random spot check, you may get picked, or you may not.

Has this actually happened to anyone?

Chelsea posted on her Instagram once the news broke, asking people who has travelled to Spain since the start of 2022 to share if they were asked about money.

Only four of the 1373 people asked said that they had, and provided stories about what had happened.

All of them went through the checks in 2022, and only one had to show proof of accommodation, a return flight, and just flashed their credit card to the officer, who seemed unbothered to see a bank statement or account balance.

The others got away with flashing their credit cards, with no real thorough checks taking place according to them.

But with that being said, they may begin to stop more people as the number of tourists into the country increases.

How should I prepare?

No matter how slim the chance, it's key to have the following at hand:

  • Confirmation of your return flight or onwards travel
  • Confirmation of your booked accommodation and the address of where you’re staying

Screenshots will do, though PDFs and official confirmations will probably look better.

Brits will have to prepare for spot checks when entering EU countries from now on. (Getty Stock Photo)

How do I prepare to prove that I have enough money?

First and foremost, you have to work out if you have £97 per day, with people in families or groups having to do more maths to make this work.

Showing bank cards might be the key, so make sure they're easily accessible, though it sounds like officers are looking for verbal confirmation so far from tourists, according to Chelsea.

The Spanish Ministry of Interior also states you can prove it: "...in cash, or by presenting certified checks, traveler's checks, letters of payment, or credit cards, which must be accompanied by a bank account statement or an up-to-date bank book (letters from banks or Internet bank statements will not be accepted) or any other means with which the amount available as credit of said card or Bank account."

What if I don't have enough?

There are no known cases of this yet, but the official ruling from the Spanish government states: "In the event that, when carrying out the entry control of people in Spanish territory, it is verified that a foreigner lacks sufficient economic resources for the time he wishes to remain in Spain and to continue his trip to the country of destination or to return to the country of origin, or do not have the registered, non-transferrable and closed ticket or tickets, in the means of transport they intend to use, their entry into Spanish territory will be denied as established by regulation."

It does also state that in exceptional circumstances, you could still get let in, but the length of your stay may be reduced.

Bottom line: Come prepared!

This is how it's going to be from now on.

This popular European city is the latest to increase its tourist tax to battle overtourism

spain tourist card

Barcelona is the latest European city to increase its city-wide tourist tax, a slight increase of €0.50 (about $0.53) per night, as the city seeks to curb overtourism.

The new price of €3.25 (about $3.45) was implemented on April 1 as part of the Stays in Tourist Establishments Tax . The bylaw was introduced in 2021, when the tourist tax was €0.75 (around $0.80) per night, and gradually increased the tax each year through 2024. Now, if someone is staying in Barcelona for seven nights, the new total tax amount will be €22.75 (around $24).

“It was the objective sought: to contain the number of tourists and increase tourist income because our model is no longer mass tourism but quality tourism, which adds value to the city,” deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said in March, according to Euronews .

The tax is added to a tourist’s accommodations bill when they stay at official tourist establishments in the city. The money goes toward enhancing the city’s infrastructure, such as improving roads.

Other popular European destinations, such as Amsterdam and Venice, also recently increased tourist taxes for similar reasons.

Are tourist taxes the future of travel? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

“The new and increasing tourist fees across Europe allow cities to fund measures to attract more vacationers, support the local infrastructure and businesses, as well as preventing damages from overtourism,” Tiffany Mealiff, a travel insurance expert at Quotezone , said in a statement to USA TODAY.

However, Barcelona visitors have had to pay a regional tourist tax since 2012, according to Euronews . This tax amount depends on a traveler’s accommodation type, costing more if someone is staying at a luxury hotel than an Airbnb.

Barcelona continues to reign as Spain’s most popular tourist destination. In 2022, Barcelona welcomed 9.7 million tourists , just slightly below pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Barcelona City Council. However, tourists were found to be staying in the city longer than in 2019.

In 2022, the city also sought to cap the number of people in a tour group and ban megaphones by tour guides in an effort to curb the disruptive effects of overtourism.

Travelers planning their European getaway should be mindful of the additional costs that “are often not obvious beforehand,” according to Mealiff, as they plan their trip budgets.

The Best eSIM Card for Spain Travel in 2024

The Best eSIM Card for Spain Travel in 2024

Planning a trip to Spain and wondering how to stay connected? I’ve been there, and let me tell you, finding the right eSIM card can be a game-changer. It’s all about staying connected without the hassle of swapping SIM cards or facing unexpected roaming charges.

I’ve scoured the options and tested a few myself to bring you the lowdown on the best eSIM cards for Spain. Whether you’re there for the stunning beaches, the mouth-watering paella, or the vibrant street festivals, I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into the world of eSIMs and find the perfect one for your Spanish adventure.

Top eSIM Providers for Spain

I’ve stumbled upon eSIMX, a game-changer for my trips to Spain. For a mere $4.5 USD , you get an eSIM that works flawlessly across the country, including the Balearic and Canary Islands. The prepaid plan options are diverse, allowing me to choose from 1GB up to 20GB data packages at speeds that make sharing my beach selfies a breeze. Installation’s a snap with a QR code. What is the coverage? Spot-on in major cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Here’s a quick look at their offerings:

Next up is Airalo with their Guay Mobile package. Their plans start at $4.50 for 1GB of data and scale up to 20GB for $26.00, covering every bit of Spain. Their options are perfect for short trips, ensuring I’m always connected without breaking the bank. Here’s a breakdown:

Nomad’s flexible plans and coverage through major Spanish providers like Vodafone and Orange caught my eye. Prices start from $6 USD for 1GB valid for 7 days to $33 USD for a hefty 20GB. Their mix of regular and day plans is particularly appealing, catering to various needs and budgets.

Holafly is my go-to for stress-free travel in Spain, especially with their unlimited data plans starting at $19.00 USD . The setup’s effortless, and it includes call minutes! With their 24/7 English customer service, I never feel lost. Here’s a glance at their plans:

Maya’s eSIM for Spain offers incredible value for travelers like me who need flexibility. It’s ideal for those heavier data usage periods, starting from $5 USD for a 3GB, 10-day pass, to $36 USD for a whopping 40GB. They even offer an unlimited data package for just $30 USD . Check this out:

ByteSim rounds out my list with their diverse offerings, including up to 5G speeds and flexibility with daily and total plans. Their automatic activation policy and the ability to switch between multiple operators for the best connection is a huge plus. Prices start at $4.90 USD, with a special 5% off on purchases over $5.00 USD. I’m particularly excited about their unlimited 5G option, a real game-changer.

Every trip to Spain is smooth sailing as long as I’ve sorted my eSIM. Whether I’m sharing tapas pics from Barcelona, live-streaming the La Tomatina festival, or simply staying connected with my friends and family, these eSIM options have covered me.

Comparison of eSIM Plans in Spain

Best eSIM Card for Spain

When narrowing down the best eSIM for Spain, comparing the different plans these providers offer is crucial. I’ve looked closely at the plans regarding data, calls and texts, and combined packages. This way, you can choose the one that aligns perfectly with your travel needs and preferences.

Nowadays, data is the backbone of any good travel experience. Whether navigating through the bustling streets of Barcelona, uploading snapshots of the Alhambra, or ringing up a local restaurant in Madrid for reservations, I rely heavily on a solid internet connection. Here’s a breakdown of what some of the top eSIM providers offer in terms of data plans for Spain:

Unlimited data plans, like the one offered by Holafly, stand out for travelers who don’t want to worry about running out of data. However, options with a defined data cap might be more budget-friendly and suitable for those planning their usage.

Call and Text Plans

Even though I mostly rely on data for communication, having the option to call or text can be a lifesaver in areas with spotty internet or for local interactions. Unfortunately, not all eSIM providers cater to this need directly in their basic packages. Traditional SIM cards or specific call-and-text-only eSIM plans are often necessary for those requiring dedicated call-and-text options. Nonetheless, some providers offer a mix of data and limited calling or texting capabilities, which can be enough for quick local calls or emergencies.

Combined Plans

For the best of both worlds, combined plans are my go-to. These packages offer a comfortable mix of data, calls, and texts, ensuring I’m covered no matter the situation. Here’s a quick look at combined plan offerings from various providers:

These plans are perfect for travelers like me who want peace of mind without carrying multiple devices or SIM cards. They offer a balanced solution, providing essential internet access and a way to communicate traditionally.

Benefits of Using an eSIM Card in Spain

One of the biggest advantages of using an eSIM card in Spain is its convenience. Imagine landing in Madrid or Barcelona, skipping the long queues at local SIM card stores, and instantly connecting to a network. That’s what an eSIM lets me do. Instead of swapping physical SIM cards, I can activate my eSIM from my phone’s settings. It’s a game-changer, especially when I simultaneously carry multiple devices or must stay connected for work and personal reasons.

Moreover, the flexibility of eSIM plans is unmatched. I’m not tied to one provider for the duration of my stay. If I find a better deal or need to adjust my data usage halfway through my trip, I can easily switch plans without any hassle. This flexibility saves me money and ensures I’m always connected with the best possible service.

Another key benefit that attracts me to eSIMs is its cost-effectiveness. Traditional SIM cards often come with hidden fees or higher rates for tourists. With eSIMs, I can access the same plans that locals use, often at a fraction of the cost. Whether looking for a plan with ample data or something that includes calls and texts, I’ve found that eSIM providers in Spain offer competitive rates that are hard to beat.

Lastly, the eco-friendly aspect of eSIMs can’t be overlooked. By eliminating the need for a physical SIM card, I’m contributing to reducing plastic waste and conserving the environment. It’s a small but meaningful way to travel more sustainably.

As I explore Spain’s picturesque landscapes and vibrant cities, staying connected is a breeze with an eSIM. The combination of convenience, flexibility, cost savings, and environmental consciousness makes it an excellent choice for any traveler.

How to Activate an eSIM Card in Spain

Activating an eSIM card for my travels in Spain was far simpler than I initially thought. The process is straightforward, a relief for anyone who’s not too tech-savvy. Let me walk you through the steps to get my eSIM up and running.

First off , you’ll need a compatible smartphone. Most newer models support eSIM technology, but it’s always good to double-check. I found a handy compatibility checker on my provider’s website, which saved me a lot of guesswork.

Next , after purchasing the eSIM plan that fit my needs, I received an email with a QR code. This is where the magic happens. All I had to do was go to my phone’s settings, find the “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” options and select “Add Data Plan.” The camera automatically launched and was ready to scan the QR code. Within moments after scanning, my eSIM was activated. It was almost instant, without any need to restart my phone or fiddle with additional settings.

What’s great about eSIMs is the flexibility to choose or change plans even after arrival in Spain. For instance, if I realized I needed more data or wanted to switch providers, I could do so directly from my phone. No visits to physical stores are required. This flexibility saved me time and hassle during my travels.

For travelers to Spain, there are generally two types of plans:

  • Prepaid : You pay upfront for a set amount of data. Great for short trips.
  • Pay-as-you-go : More flexible, allowing you to top up as needed. Ideal for longer stays.

I chose a prepaid plan, finding it aligned well with my two-week itinerary. However, the beauty of eSIM technology is that it’s designed to cater to a wide range of needs and preferences. Whether you stay for a week or a month, an eSIM plan exists.

After exploring the ins and outs of using an eSIM card in Spain, it’s clear that it’s a game-changer for travelers. The simplicity of setting it up and its flexibility make it a must-have for anyone looking to stay connected without the fuss. Whether you’re a tech novice or a savvy traveler, the ease of switching plans or providers right from your phone can’t be beaten. So, if you’re planning a trip to Spain, consider trying an eSIM. It just might make your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable.
