Star Trek: Picard finale post-credits scene explained: Showrunner confirms big things to come

Showrunner Terry Matalas says Ed Speleers is gonna be a busy man after Picard.

Warning: Spoilers from Star Trek: Picard 's series finale are discussed in this article.

There might be another Star Trek series coming our way — or at the very least, another home for Ed Speleers ' Jack Crusher.

The series finale of Star Trek: Picard , which dropped on Paramount+ Thursday, came with a post-credits scene that teases big things ahead for the character. Showrunner Terry Matalas confirms in an interview with EW, "Jack's got a lot to do, let me tell you."

He wouldn't tell us exactly what, of course, but the producer — who has guided the Patrick Stewart -led spin-off to break into the Nielsen Top 10 ratings for the first time with season 3 — confirms his story isn't over.

After Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart) and Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ) save their son from the Borg Queen with help from their longtime comrades, the finale episode jumps forward a year to see where these characters ended up. Among the reveals is the U.S.S. Titan, which has been rechristened as the Enterprise-G in recognition of Picard and his crew's efforts.

Seven of Nine ( Jeri Ryan ) has been promoted to captain, with Raffi (Michelle Hurd) as her No. 1. A few members of the Titan join them, including Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut). Jack is now Ensign Jack Crusher, as he was placed on an accelerated track by Starfleet.

The post-credits scene cuts to Jack in his quarters on the Enterprise-G. He settles into his room when Q (John de Lancie) makes a surprise appearance.

"Young mortal, you have much ahead of you," he tells Jack.

"You told my father that humanity's trial was over," the young Crusher replies.

"It is... for him," he clarifies. "But I'm here today because of you. You see, yours, Jack, has just begun."

Matalas had the idea for this moment deep into season 2 when he was mapping out the trajectory of season 3. "Once I had the genesis of this idea and I knew it would be about Picard's son, I had envisioned a post-credit sequence in which you passed the torch to [him]."

He points to "Encounter at Farpoint," the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1. "The first major interaction is Q and Picard," he says. "Where better to end than at the beginning?"

A Star Trek: Legacy series has been rumored for some time, with a few of the Picard actors teasing how season 3 leaves the door open to continue that story with the next generation of characters. Alex Kurtzman , who's been shepherding the new golden age of Trek, had even teased during San Diego Comic-Con last year that fans should expect more shows with female leads. So, perhaps, we're getting a Seven of Nine series for Ryan, with Jack as part of her crew.

The only new Trek titles that have been formally announced so far are Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , which Matalas says is part of a different timeline than Picard ; and Star Trek: Section 31 , the event movie starring Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery .

Matalas won't disclose what the plans are for Speleers as Jack moving forward, only that he knows what they are. "Oh yes. I do [know]," he says. "Oh yes."

‘Star Trek: Picard’: Everything We Know About Jack Crusher

Ed Speleers plays Jack Crusher, the son of Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard

star trek new series jack crusher

While “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3 has been a reunion of sorts for the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” there is one new character that has a major impact on at least two Enterprise crewmen.

Enter Jack Crusher. The brash young man wasn’t even given a name in the season premiere, where he dramatically revealed he’s the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher.

Episode 2 revealed even more about Crusher and his lineage, which is confirmed in Episode 3. As the season unfolds, we’ll unravel the mystery of this newcomer.

Warning, major spoilers ahead.

Who is Jack Crusher?

star trek new series jack crusher

Dr. Beverly Crusher and her son Jack make up the two-person crew of the S.S. Eleos, a medical aide vessel.

In Season 3, Episode 1, Beverly is critically injured in an alien attack. She sends a distress call out to her former captain and close friend, Jean-Luc Picard. Although she hasn’t been in contact with Picard or her Enterprise crewmates for over 20 years, they’re the only people she can trust.

Picard enlists the help of his former first officer, Will Riker, to stage a rescue mission. They hatch a plan to bring the U.S.S. Titan, Riker’s former command, to the Eleos. With the help of Seven of Nine, the Titan’s first officer, Picard and Riker steal a shuttle and board the Eleos.

There they discover Beverly in a medical stasis pod and a man who claims to be her son.

In Episode 2, the Eleos soon comes under attack from Vadic, the captain of the heavily armed warship Shrike. Vadic says that there’s a bounty on Jack and the Titan has one hour to turn him over or be destroyed.

Liam Shaw, the captain of the Titan, throws Jack in the brig while they debate what to do. They discover Jack has a checkered past; he’s a conman who has committed multiple crimes under several aliases. Is he really who he claims to be?

Shaw is inclined to turn over Jack; after all, one life isn’t worth the lives of 500, including Beverly’s. Jack escapes confinement and plans to transport himself over to the Shrike. Right before he does, Beverly appears and nods to Picard, confirming to him that Jack is his son.

Who are Jack Crusher’s parents?

star trek new series jack crusher

Jack Crusher is the son of Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard.

He is named after Beverly’s first husband, Jack R. Crusher. Her husband served under Picard on the U.S.S. Stargazer and was killed on a mission. Beverly and Jack had a son, Wesley.

While serving aboard the Enterprise, Beverly and Picard had a close relationship that bordered on romance, but they never acted upon it.

At one point they were mentally linked via alien technology, and Beverly learned that Picard had romantic feelings for her while she was married to Jack, his friend and crewman. He never acted on them and tried to deny her application to the Enterprise. After the alien technology is removed, they shared a kiss, but that was it.

When was Jack Crusher conceived?

In Episode 3, Beverly and Picard finally have a one-on-one conversation about Jack.

It turns out Jack was conceived the old-fashioned way.

Two months before leaving the Enterprise, the on-again-off-again couple took shore leave to Casperia Prime, a vacation world known for its natural beauty.

Apparently, the couple was taken away by the beauty of a waterfall and then taken by each other.

Beverly became pregnant that night but decided not to tell Picard.

She tried several times, but Picard was involved in some dangerous situation or another. Beverly realized that she could protect her son, but not Picard’s son. So she hid his identity from birth on.

What is Jack Crusher’s relationship with his parents and crewmates?

star trek new series jack crusher

Jack has a close relationship with his mother Beverly, who he says taught him everything he knows.

In Episode 2, when asked by Picard who his father is, Jack shouts, “I never knew my father!”

It takes Jack’s near-death in Episode 3 from verterium poisoning for fatherhood to sink in for Picard.

In Episode 4, with the Titan sinking further into a gravity well, Picard tries to make up for lost time for inviting Crusher to have a drink in Ten Forward. He tells Jack about his namesake and Beverly’s first husband, Jack R. Crusher. Picard and Jack R. were best friends on the U.S.S. Stargazer, and had to pilot a meteoroid shower in a damaged shuttle together.

Picard and Jack essentially recreate this at the end of the episode, with Crusher calling out navigational coordinates while Picard directs thrusters, allowing the Titan to escape the nebula.

At the very end of the episode, it’s revealed that Jack did meet his father once before, in a bar five years prior. After listening to Picard regale Starfleet cadets about his past adventures, Jack asked Picard about family. Picard replied that he considered Starfleet to be all the family he ever needed, crushing Jack.

Jack and Sidney La Forge strike a bond in Episode 6 with both feeling the pressure from their famous fathers. There seems to be a bit of a flirtation growing between the two. But Geordi quickly quashes it, telling Jack to “stay away from my daughter.”

He also bonds with Seven of Nine, with whom he shares a rebellious streak.

He has a love-hate relationship with Vadic, who teases him about his true identity and the red door he sees in his visions. He pleads with Vadic to tell him who he really is, but kills her before she can give him any answers.

How old is Jack Crusher?

star trek new series jack crusher

Beverly was in her fifties by the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the last time her character was last seen on screen.

“Picard” Season 3 takes place approximately 23 years later, but Jack Crusher appears to be a bit older than that (actor Ed Speleers is 34 years old).

Twitter users had some theories that Jack was actually born when Beverly left the Enterprise in Season 2 (Gates McFadden was written out of the show and later brought back). That would make Jack in his early 30s — which he appears to be — rather than his early 20s.

However, that theory was debunked in Episode 3. Jack Crusher is just a hard-looking (but handsome) 23-year-old. Living with your mom full-time and running rescue missions apparently ages you prematurely.

Episode 4 confirms Jack’s age when Picard asks him if he’s about 23 or 24 years old. This ends up being a major plot point towards the end of the season.

Jack Crusher’s visions — what lies behind the red door?

star trek new series jack crusher

While exposed to toxic verterium gas, Jack has visions of a woman (in the form of Seven of Nine) who beckons to him “Find me!”

At the end of Episode 4, Jack has a similar vision in his quarters, with a female voice once again calling out, “Find me!” He also has visions of roots growing on the walls and a glowing red door.

Episode 5 opens with a disturbing vision of Jack on the Titan bridge, massacring all of the bridge crew. Fortunately, it’s just a vision and Jack snaps back to reality inside his quarters. He drops the phaser and his eyes glow red.

At the end of the episode, he has another vision and kills four Changelings disguised as humans with ease.

One leading theory is that Jack is possessed by the Pah Wraiths, non-corporeal beings and enemies of the Bajoran Prophets from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” Since the Changelings were also introduced in “Deep Space Nine,” the two species may have some connection.

In Episode 6, it’s revealed that Jack inherited irumodic syndrome from Picard, a neurological disorder that causes hallucinations.

Warning, major spoilers ahead

In Episode 9, Troi and Jack open the red door in his mind. Behind they find a Borg Cube. The female voice calling out to Jack is the Borg Queen (Alice Krige).

Troi runs and tells Beverly and Picard what she sees. Picard talks to Jack, who deduces it’s the Borg and then flees the Titan in a shuttle. He is drawn to the source of the voices — the Queen.

This is where it gets slightly complicated/technical. 35 years ago, the Borg assimilated Picard and introduced dormant code into his DNA — code that was passed on to Jack.

Whereas all assimilated Borg “receive” commands from the collective/Queen, Jack’s unique DNA makes him a “transmitter.”

What are Jack Crusher’s special abilities and powers?

In Episode 7, Jack taps into several new powers.

While flirting with Sidney in the turbolift, he is able to read her mind telepathically, proving this is no case of irumodic syndrome. Later, when Changelings board the Titan, Jack “possesses” Sidney’s body, allowing her to take down her attacker.

In Episode 8, he “possesses” Mura in an attempt to regain control of the bridge, which Vadic has commandeered.

In Episode 9, we learn that due to his Borg code, he is able to “transmit” to anyone who has Borg code in their system.

How does Jack Crusher fit in with Frontier Day?

The Borg and Changelings have secretly been infiltrating Starfleet, adding Borg code to the transporter system. Anyone who uses the transporter has the code spliced into their system, becoming a “receiver.” This only works on younger crewmembers before their brains stop developing.

The code lies dormant until activated via a transmitter. Jack is that transmitter.

When the Borg Queen captures Jack, she uses him to transmit to all the ships gathered at Frontier Day. Any crewmember under 25, including the La Forge sisters and Mura, is immediately assimilated and activated as Borg drones.

The Queen is able to take command of all of Starfleet without even having a ship nearby.

Jack is assimilated and is hesitant to separate himself from the collective despite his father’s pleas. Eventually, Picard is successful, averting the destruction of Earth by the assimilated fleet.

Where is Jack at the end of the series?

In a proud send-him-off-to-college moment, Beverly and Jean Luc travel with Jack to his first Starfleet posting aboard the U.S.S. Titan, which has been renamed the U.S.S. Enterprise.

His new commanding officer? Captain Seven of Nine, who appoints the ensign as special counselor.

Later, as he’s unpacking his belongings in his quarters, he is visited by Q. We break down the post-credit scene between Jack and Q here .

Who plays Jack Crusher?

star trek new series jack crusher

As previously mentioned, British actor Ed Speleers plays Jack Crusher.

Speleers is best known for playing Jimmy the footman on “Downton Abbey,” Stephen Bonnet on “Outlander” and Rhys Montrose on “You.”

His big break came in 2006 when he played the title role in the fantasy feature film “Eragon.”

What's the deal with Jack Crusher in 'Star Trek: Picard'?

Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher's son had always known he was "different". Here's everything you need to know about Jack Crusher.

Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched "Star Trek: Picard" episode 9, 'Võx' and episode 10, 'The Last Generation' .

As soon as Jack Crusher turned up in "Star Trek: Picard season 3", his place in franchise history was assured – after all, as the son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher, he's effectively Starfleet royalty.

But there's more to Jack than the compassionate but morally flexible doctor we first encounter on board the SS Eleos XII. Over the course of the season we've seen visions and inner voices evolve into full-on superpowers, but the cause of his "gifts" remained a tantalizing mystery… until Deanna Troi took a peek behind the locked red door in his mind.

In episode 9, 'Võx', we finally learned why there was "something very wrong" with Jack – and why Vadic and the Changelings were so obsessed with tracking him down. It turned out his powers are the direct result of his father's assimilation by the Borg 35 years earlier, and he became the cornerstone of the Collective's latest assault on the Federation.

"I always thought if people could only see each other, hear each other, speak in one voice, act in one mind together…" the altruistic Jack explained in the episode. "Who knew a little cybernetic authoritarianism was the answer?"

Here's everything you need to know about Jack Crusher and his Borg heritage in "Star Trek: Picard season 3".

What are Jack Crusher's abilities?

Jack Crusher in Star Trek: Picard.

We saw Jack Crusher's (Ed Speleers) superhuman abilities evolve throughout the course of "Star Trek: Picard" season 3. Early on, these traits manifested themselves as voices, visions and unexplained fighting skills. We've since seen him listen to crewmates' thoughts and take control of their minds and bodies, remote-controlling them in hand-to-hand combat against the Changelings.

When Counselor Deanna Troi arrived on the USS Titan, however, she realized that Jack's gifts were not necessarily a good thing. "There's a darkness with that boy," she pointed out. "Not in him but around him, passing through him. And a voice inside him, ancient and weak, but a voice that isn't his own."

Jack eventually admitted that his recurring visions of spooky red vines represent connection, something he saw as "right, true, purposeful… perfect." And when he allowed Troi to open the imposing red door lurking in his mind's eye, the shock prompted her to run away from their consultation. Understandable, perhaps, seeing as it was a Borg Cube.

What was Jack's connection with the Borg?

Jack Crusher and jean Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard.

It's something Jack inherited from his dad.

When Jean-Luc Picard was assimilated by the Borg in classic "Star Trek: The Next Generation" two-parter 'The Best of Both Worlds', he briefly became part of the Collective as Locutus. He was subsequently rescued by the Enterprise crew and, after his cybernetic implants were removed, cleared by Starfleet to return to active duty.

But Starfleet's doctors didn't realize that the Borg had also made some biological adaptations to Picard's DNA. "I survived without scars," he explained, "but not, it seems, unchanged." These modifications would come to manifest themselves in symptoms misdiagnosed as Irumodic Syndrome, the degenerative neurological condition that wound up killing Jean-Luc's human body in the first season of "Picard". These genetic alterations were also the reason Picard could still "hear" the Borg in "Star Trek: First Contact".

In 'Võx', set some 35 years after Picard's close encounter with the Collective, it emerged that he inadvertently passed his Borg DNA onto his long-lost son – and that the traits Jack inherited were no longer dormant. It was also apparent that the Collective no longer required electronic components to operate as a hive mind.

Did Jack willfully join forces with the Collective?

Borg Jack Crusher in Star Trek: Picard.

Yes and no.

It's undeniable that the lure of the Borg Queen's voice (which, for most of Jack's life, has sounded like his mother's) was strong, and that he used his aforementioned powers to escape custody, steal a shuttlecraft and jump into one of the Borg's transwarp conduits for a journey "home". But this course of action initially owed more to Jack's desire to find some answers – and avoid a lifetime of mind melds and lobotomies in a Vulcan institution – than embracing an opportunity to betray his shipmates

When Jack found the Borg Queen (voiced by Alice Krige, who originated the role in "First Contact") on a derelict Borg space station, she explained that in contrast with his father – who, as Locutus, was the "one who speaks" – he was "the voice itself". She also persisted with her Latin naming convention, telling Jack his Borg self would be known as Võx.

Jack wasn't on board with the plan, however, and tried to shoot her – an act he described as "mercy" – but his in-built programming prevented him from doing so. He was quickly hooked up to some prehensile Borg cables to connect with the Collective – though it's unlikely that was his intent when he left the Titan.

Why was Jean-Luc Picard's human body so important?

Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard

When Picard's (misdiagnosed) Irumodic Syndrome became terminal in "Picard" season 1, Data 's human "brother" Dr Altan Soong gifted him an advanced cybernetic "golem" body. After Picard had died, however, Soong realized there was an "anomalous form" inside his body and ordered his remains be preserved at Daystrom Station for further study.

This "anomalous form" was, of course, the result of the Borg's genetic tinkering – and the central pillar of their plan to assimilate Starfleet. The Borg's plan was to spread Picard's Borg-altered DNA throughout Starfleet using the transporters.

Why did the Changelings want to get their hands on Jack?

Vadic in Star Trek: Picard.

The entire season was an unexpected team-up between "The Next Generation" era's most iconic villains.

The late Vadic and her new-and-improved Changeling forces were the perfect allies for the Borg. As well as sharing the Collective's hatred for the Federation, their shapeshifting abilities ensured they could infiltrate all levels of Starfleet.

Changeling operatives deployed throughout the fleet then incorporated the Borg DNA recovered from Picard's deceased body into starship transporter systems. As crew members beamed on and off their ships, the computers recognized this new genetic code as "common biology" and integrated it into the DNA of every officer in the fleet.

The Changelings wanted Jack because of they needed his Borg-altered DNA, though they later ended up acquiring this from Picard's body.

What was the Borg's plan?

Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard.

They wanted to assimilate Starfleet by stealth – and Starfleet unwittingly made it easy for them. Not only were numerous starships gathered in one place to celebrate Federation Day – the 250th anniversary of Starfleet – but they also showcased the new "Fleet Formation Mode", in which their computer systems were integrated as one.

More importantly, with Jack hooked up to the Collective, the Borg Queen was in prime position to implement her masterplan. When the assimilation signal was activated, it allowed her to activate the dormant Borg DNA lurking inside unsuspecting crewmembers. In an instant, hundreds of officers – including Geordi La Forge's daughters, Sidney and Alandra – were transformed into drones. They subsequently assimilated every ship in Starfleet.

There was a flaw in the Borg Queen's evil scheme, however. Thanks to a classic (and arguably over convenient) piece of "Star Trek" pseudo-science, Data explained that the "Borg genetic material doesn't propagate in a species past a certain point in the development cycle", meaning it affected younger members of the crew, but not their more senior counterparts. In other words, if ever there was a time for the veteran "TNG" crew to come into their own, this was it.

Picard and the crew subsequently returned to the Fleet Museum where Geordi La Forge revealed he'd rebuilt their old ship, the USS Enterprise-D, last seen crash-landing on Viridian III in "Star Trek: Generations". Because it's systems were too old to connect to Starfleet's networked computers, they were able to infiltrate the Borg Queen's vessel and destroy the signal beacon assimilating Starfleet's kids.

Rescuing Jack from the Borg

Borg Jack Crusher in Star Trek: Picard.

Jack was given Borg implants much like his father's and became the central processing unit of the hive mind. He wasn't overly eager to leave, either, as he found peace in the Collective, a place where there was no loneliness, no fear and no suffering.

When Picard plugged himself into the hive mind, however, he managed to convince Jack of the importance of family, and remind him that he didn't have to feel alone. Jack then disconnected himself from the Borg voluntarily, and was beamed onto the Enterprise (along with Picard, Riker and Worf) before the Cube exploded.

What's next for Jack Crusher?

Jack Crusher and Jean Luc Picard having a drink in Star Trek: Picard.

Jack was fast-tracked through Starfleet Academy and posted to the USS Titan, now renamed the USS Enterprise-G in honor of Picard and co's efforts saving Earth and the Federation from the Borg and the Dominion. Newly promoted captain Seven of Nine appointed him as special counselor to the captain, giving him a spot on the bridge.

That's not the end of Jack's story, however. In the end credits of the season finale, Jack received a visit from everyone's favorite omnipotent super-being, Q, who's not quite as dead as season 2 led us to believe. When Jack pointed out the ongoing trial of humanity (which had begun in "TNG" pilot 'Encounter at Farpoint') was supposed to be over, Q confirmed it was for Picard – but that Jack's "has just begun".

It feels like the set-up for a spin-off featuring Seven, Raffi, Sidney and Jack, but don't get your hopes up just yet – showrunner Terry Matalas has stated "there is nothing in development at Paramount."

Who Is Jack Crusher? How Picard Season 3's New Character Fits Into Star Trek Canon

Here’s what the latest Crusher is all about.

Ed Speelers as Jack Crusher in 'Star Trek: Picard'

There’s a new Crusher in town. But the latest character reveal in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 has a familiar name: Jack. The new guy — played by Ed Speleers — is the second Jack Crusher to pop up in Trek canon. How does he fit in? And when in the Star Trek timeline was he even born? Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 2, “Disengage.”

Who is Jack Crusher?

In Picard Season 3, Jack Crusher is a kind of Robin Hood in space, working with his mother, Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), delivering medical supplies and humanitarian aid to planets outside the scope of the Federation. He’s also the biological son of Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard, though as we see in “Disengage,” Picard didn’t know about Jack. In the previous episode, “The Next Generation,” Riker and Jean-Luc talk about the mystery of why Beverly Crusher stopped speaking to everyone from the old Enterprise crew over 20 years before the events of the new season. Jack Crusher is the answer.

Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher

Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) and the life-pod containing his mother, Beverly Crusher, in Picard Season 3, Episode 2, “Disengage.”

When was Jack Crusher born?

Showrunner Terry Matalas tells Inverse that Jack Crusher was born “around the timeframe of Nemesis .” This means that sometime shortly after that film, in 2379 or 2380, Beverly realized she was pregnant with Jack and ditched Picard and the rest of the Enterprise-E crew. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 takes place in 2402, making Jack either 22 or 23, give or take a few months.

Actor Ed Speleers is 34, but this is the 25th century, and people don’t always look the way we think they should. In fact, Jean-Luc Picard, born in 2305, is 97 years old. In real life, Patrick Stewart is 82, practically a spring chicken by Trek standards.

Is Jack Crusher a clone?

Picard and Jack Crusher Sr. during their Stargazer days

A 2019 comic book featuring Jean-Luc Picard and Jack Crusher Sr. on the Stargazer way before the Enterprise-D .

One odd fan theory that made the rounds after Picard Season 3 Episode 1 was the idea that this new Jack Crusher is a clone of Beverly’s ex-husband, also named Jack Crusher. In The Next Generation , we learn that Beverly’s husband, Jack, was killed in a mission while Picard was in command of the USS Stargazer .

In TNG canon, the first Jack Crusher (played by Doug Wert) was the father of Wesley Crusher. We only saw this Jack twice, once as a holographic message to Wesley in the TNG episode “Family,” and then as a corpse within a flashback in “Violations.” As we learned in the TNG episode “Attached,” Jean-Luc was in love with Beverly Crusher back in the day, but Jack was his best friend, so he never acted on his feelings. Jack’s death pre- TNG enabled Beverly and Jean-Luc’s on-again, off-again romance. Various comics and novels explored Jack and Jean-Luc’s days on the Stargazer , including the book Reunion and the excellent one-shot 2019 comic book, IDW 20/20 Star Trek: TNG , which also featured a much younger Beverly Crusher.

So, no, the new Jack Crusher is not a clone. He’s his own man, named after Beverly’s first husband, Wesley’s dad, and Jean-Luc Picard’s old best friend. This also makes the new Jack half-brothers with Wesley Crusher.

On the Star Trek aftershow The Ready Room , Wil Wheaton and Ed Speelers both said they hoped that someday, somehow, Jack and Wesley could meet. (Wesley, if you’ve forgotten, is a Star Trek Time Lord right now.) For now, fans will have to wait and see how Jean-Luc and Jack’s relationship shakes out in the rest of Picard Season 3.

Ed Speleers Talks ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Post-Credit Scene And Potential Spinoff In New ‘Star Trek Explorer’

The eighth issue of the relaunched Star Trek: Explorer magazine arrives in the USA on Tuesday. It includes several exclusive interviews including two regarding the final season of Star Trek: Picard . In one, Ed Speleers talks about that post-credit scene as well as the potential spinoff series, which showrunner Terry Matalas imagines as Star Trek: Legacy . We have an exclusive preview of what Speleers had to say.

Ed Speleers talks Picard post-credit scene

One of the surprises of the Star Trek: Picard series finale was a post-credit scene featuring newly minted ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) on the USS Enterprise-G getting an unexpected visit from Q (John de Lancie). In the upcoming issue, Speleers talked about that scene:

Terry didn’t specifically tell me that was happening. I was just sort of presented the script. He said, “I am going to put some scenes in this episode that might potentially tee up the possibility of further existence for Jack,” but he didn’t specifically tell me. I just remember reading it and then finding out that John de Lancie and Q, and what that means to Star Trek canon. I was obviously kind of chuffed that I would be working with him. I think the scene is quite interesting because it’s not that long, but I feel the way Terry constructed how he wanted the scene to play out and the way John and I went about making it happen was, we just tried to leave as much space for the scene to breathe in between the lines. There was so much history there with Picard that if this was going to filter on and continue with Jack, then these two are going to be frenemies. We also shot the scene right at the end of the shoot, and Terry and I talked a lot about maybe doing more in the spin-off, so this scene had to land. I just hope it’s the first of many scenes with John de Lancie.

When asked if he is ready for more Star Trek, the actor made it clear he is:

I would be there with bells on. If the opportunity presents itself, then sign me up, Scotty!

I liked him, and I’d watch a series centered around him. If they can tone down his character’s extra sensory powers that would be nice, though.

I don’t think he has those anymore. He was able to see into the minds of anyone other 25 who had been through the transporter, but Beverly cured everyone. Unless they encounter more Borg, Jack shouldn’t have any unusual abilities.

“Strange Energies”

This magazine is like a paper supplement for a tenner. Can’t pick it up in any newsagent in Ireland even if you wanted to. Four issues a year now too. Down bad…

If they do make a spinoff show, I hope the Vulcan actress from the Titan comes back. I know she was killed, but I think she portrayed a great Vulcan. Give her a twin sister who’s also in Starfleet.

I think this guy should have the been new Kirk on SNW. Better resemblance and personality that matches an early Shatner in TOS.

The whole bridge crew was pretty well fleshed out, but I’d love to see Stephanie Czajkowski back in some capacity. I mean we have a Crusher and a La Forge on the bride, why not a sister for T’Veen? It would be great if the entire bridge crew were able to come back if a spinoff happens.

She was a good Vulcan.

I think they have as much potential as the Disco bridge crew who were used similarly, but really only Sidney got any meaningful development.

I have a feeling that T’Veen’s death was setting up the return of Naiomi Wildman if Destiny ever gets made.

I want to say I read online (I think it was here) that there were plans for Naiomi to appear in the last episode but she was one of the denied cameos or a deal couldn’t be worked out (Scarlett Pomers is retired).

If Destiny does get approved I really see Naiomi being back as Science Officer.

Please, no.

I have zero interest in a “kids of Star Trek” series. I’ve seen calls for LEGACY to feature Jack Crusher, Sidney LaForge (and her sister), Soji, Kestra Troi-Riker, Alexander Rozhenko, Jake Sisko, and now Naomi Wildman. Throw in B’Elanna’s kid for good measure.

Please, can’t Hollywood give us something original? Shaw and T’Veen and Ohk and such were original, but they killed them off.

Doctor Ohk survived.

While I’d love to see a show starring Captain Seven, I’d really rather Jack Crusher wasn’t part of her crew. I didn’t care for the character and would be glad if he were gone.

I agree, but I will add in Raffi who I strongly .dislike. I want Seven’s show to be about her.

Yeah, I only want to see Seven and Sidney LaForge again. Good writing is also due for a long-awaited comeback, but that’s another story. ;-)

Agreed. Jack’s the kind of character who works alright as the main character of his own show, but kind of sucks all the air out of the room as part of an ensemble.

He was a primary focus in PIC S3, if he were part of an ensemble on a mostly episodic series I don’t think that would be the case. Though I enjoyed the character and would love to see more for him, I do think they would need find a better role for the character. “Special counselor to the captain” seemed silly.

Because he was a nepotism admit to anything other than the medical corps.

I also agree. No disrespect to Ed Speleers, who is a wonderful actor, but the character was so generically “cool” I kept thinking of Poochie from The Simpsons. The more the storyline focused on him, the less interesting the show became.

The character was fine as a foil to Picard himself. I don’t want to see a series based on him.

I can’t think of a better way than “Kids of Star Trek” to kill off the franchise permanently.

Nothing symbolises the awful writing on Picard when they make this big song and dance about killing Q in S2… then… immediately bring him back the following season. Same with Data. Trek fans don’t care though, they just want nostalgia.

We’ve found our newest drinking game! Take a sip every time someone whinges about nostalgia.

Yeah but then we’d all get alcohol poisoning which doesn’t sound fun

Hush now. I went back and read a few older comment sections with some gin. I feel great!

When new Trek stops sledgehammering nostalgia into literally everything, then the whinging will stop.

I agree 100 percent. Nostalgia is not part of the human condition which is what Star Trek is all about. The other day me and few of my childhood friends got together and talked about old times. We’ve had some shared trials and Tribblations over the years. But in reality its embarrassing and who needs thus Nostalgia crap. After coming home I felt like slapping my face im shame for indulging in Nostalgia.

We don’t want to see Nostalgia in Hollywood because it’s not realistic. . Doesn’t make sine that long tenued friendships involve talking about old times. Who wants to see that?

Last week I had some relatives come over. Not ONCE did we discuss the past Conversation was new and fresh. Very Original.

Totally unrealistic what we saw in Picard in Season 3 . Nostalgia is not a corner of the universe that should be explored at all.

If you’re experiencing something as a human, then it’s part of the human condition. No, the problem with nostalgia as presented in popular culture today is that it’s largely a marketing gimmick and one that’s used far too often. That’s all. There’s nothing wrong with nostalgia as a concept. After all, Star Trek has had an element of nostalgia since it was created. I mean, certainly the name Enterprise held a great deal of nostalgic value for veterans like Genes Roddenberry and Coon, and many others from the WW2 generation.

What Trek needs now is to simply pull back on the nostalgia, to the point where it doesn’t feel like a condescending carnival barker shouting, “Hey, nerd, you like this [specific thing] from Trek’s past! Here you go! Now here’s twenty more references in the next ten minutes…”

Meh it depends on what exactly the context is. The Voyager half of Twovix was an issue and tiring. Shit like Mariner mentioning that she was stationed at DS9 at the same time Worf was isn’t one. It just tells you that Beckett Mariner was on DS9 during the Dominion War. But it seems like Emily even has problems with the latter. Maybe it would have been better if Mariner had flat out said “I am a veteran of the Dominion War” but that’s not what the conversation was about, it was about trying to cheer Tendi up after she accidentally broke something that belonged to T’Ana.

In that context that reference worked and made sense and the refusal to accept even ones that make sense within the story is why people get so frustrated with Emily.

Well, I was talking about Picard. But I have no problem with LDS being the reference comedy show. I just wish that could be the place to go for that kind of thing and the other series could do something fresh and different.

And Jack Crusher being assimilated by the Borg and then being visited by a very interested Q is not what I’d call fresh and different. Not for me anyway.

My girlfriend is not a big Trekkie and didn’t get most of the previous trek references in Picard season 3. And she enjoyed it. What’s does that mean then? She never sees trailers 10 times like a trekkkie or seeks out any promotional stuff. So the hard push marketing stuff didn’t even reach her. I didn’t think S3 was overkill in nostalgia. But even if it was , after hundreds of hours of the franchise, I’m ok with some ” comfort trek”. Im.ok withn it being a personal guilty pleasure like “Rocky 4” and Big Trouble in Little China.

I see Picard as a TNG companion series. Not a standalone show . Everyone has different opinions which is fine. But it serms to me Nostalgia being a bad thing is over blown these days and is easy low hanging fruit to bash something. It’s not like all 3 seasons of Picard was the old boys playing poker 24/7.

At the the end of the the day, I have 1 simple litmus test. Was I entertained?. That’s all I care about.

But even if it was , after hundreds of hours of the franchise, I’m ok with some ” comfort trek”.

Like I say: creative bankruptcy, intellectual stagnation.

Doesn’t make sine that long tenued friendships involve talking about old times. Who wants to see that?

Methinks fpp doth protest too much.

Nostalgia is perfectly fine in limited qualities and in context. “Relics” showed that, for example. But a steady diet of nothing but nostalgia is a sign of creative bankruptcy. It leads to stagnation.

Right, “Relics” is a great example. It felt special at the time because TNG’s references to TOS were so few and far between.

ANY Star Trek show IS nostalgia. Just having the name Star Trek attached to it is. Same with Star Wars… in fact, every Star Wars show IS nostalgia.

So basically, you want a generic utopian science fiction show that makes no reference to any Star Trek show in any way.

How does limited references to nostalgia mean no references at all? You’re making a reductive argument.

No I am not. Because people complain about ANY nostalgia. The name STAR TREK is in fact nostalgia.

Not really. Most of the complaints I see here and other places about nostalgia are usually about the sheer abundance and blatant use of nostalgia. So saying it’s about ANY nostalgia and fans are arguing for none at all is reductive and inaccurate.

As for the name Star Trek being nostalgic, yes, that is how Paramount apparently sees it now. That’s how they market it. That’s how it’s sold. Because it’s easy and doesn’t require a great deal of effort.

Ain’t nothing wrong with a good drinking game. And it would be more entertaining than a lot of the actual Trek we’re getting these days.

Enterprise tried to do it completely different. No STAR TREK in the title. Different music. Very little nostalgia. The ended up adding the STAR TREK title and adding more tie in nostalgia. Even then, fans complained it was too different.

I just want the jackets.

I love Picard Season 3, but I think an Enterprise G spinoff needs some reworking for me to be really excited for it. I really dislike the ship design for one thing, but it’s not a deal breaker. But the ensemble needs some tweaking. One of the reasons SNW works so well compared to Discovery is that it has such a great ensemble cast, it’s something you really have to get right above all else, and I don’t really believe it’s there in the setup.

Stop teasing us already and just do it!

Keith R.A. Candido?

You know, good ol KRAC.

Any new Trek show would be better than Very Short Treks, which is the worst thing to bear the Star Trek logo in decades.

‘Star Trek: Picard': Everything We Know About Jack Crusher

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Jack flees the Titan in a shuttle without knowing what’s behind the door. He is drawn to the source of the visions — the Queen.

Who plays Jack Crusher?

As previously mentioned, British actor Ed Speleers plays Jack Crusher.

Speleers is best known for playing Jimmy the footman on “Downton Abbey,” Stephen Bonnet on “Outlander” and Rhys Montrose on “You.”

His big break came in 2006 when he played the title role in the fantasy feature film “Eragon.”

New episodes of “Star Trek: Picard” air Thursdays on Paramount+ .

Picard says goodbye with a mysterious hint at Star Trek’s future

The finale has one of Star Trek’s only credits scenes

Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard, sitting in his captain’s chair and making his classic “engage” gesture, in Picard.

Never let it be said that Paramount Plus hasn’t brought the Star Trek franchise into the modern era of interconnected television: Star Trek even has credits scenes now.

And while the award for “first credits scene in Star Trek” would go to Star Trek: Lower Decks , with its season 3 finale, “The Stars at Night,” the award for “first Star Trek credits scene to point at a mysterious future installment of the franchise” can go to Star Trek: Picard and its finale.

[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for the final episode of Star Trek: Picard season 3, “The Last Generation.”]

Jack Crusher, in his Starfleet ensign uniform, standing in his quarters, raises his phaser and looks confused in Picard.

The denouement of “The Last Generation” makes sure we know exactly where our faves old and new have wound up. While the Next Generation crew largely wound up with promotions, renewed relationships, or just a return to their peaceful lives, Picard built a new future for some of its younger old characters.

Former borg drone Seven of Nine was promoted to captain of the Titan, which was renamed Enterprise. Thanks to some calculated intelligence leaks, her girlfriend Raffi’s record was cleared, freeing her up to act as Seven’s first officer, and Jack Crusher — son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher , interstellar adventurer, recently freed from Borg control — was fast-tracked to the rank of Starfleet ensign to serve as captain’s counselor.

The credits scene takes us right back to Jack, in his quarters on the newly christened Enterprise, as he’s visited by none other than the cosmic being known as Q (John de Lancie). Q was thought to have died at the end of Picard season 2, but when Jack points that out, Q admonishes him for thinking so linearly. The long and the short of it is: Q is eternal, and he has something in mind for the progeny of his longtime fixation, Jean-Luc Picard.

Does this mean Star Trek: Legacy is real?

Ltr: Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard, Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, and Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. They stand abreast in a line, smiling. Riker and Seven are in uniform.

About a month ago, Picard showrunner Terry Matalas tweeted that “#StarTrekLegacy is what I’d call a spin-off show from #StarTrekPicard. A 25th Century show that explores the Last Generation and the Next.” Since then, he’s been either teasing an upcoming show or just having a hearty good time retweeting coverage of his tweet and clips of veteran Star Trek actors agreeing that a nostalgic spinoff for 1990s Trek fans sounds like a good idea .

So it’s not entirely clear whether “Star Trek Legacy” is a real show or what. But it’s hard to imagine what else Picard ’s final moments could possibly be pointing to. The next Star Trek show on the Paramount Plus lineup is the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , then the fourth season of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks , and then the second season of all-ages cartoon Star Trek: Prodigy . None of those seem like a good fit for Picard ’s hints, being set in completely different eras or produced in a completely different medium.

Paramount has also confirmed at least two more future Star Trek projects, but they also don’t seem likely as answers either — Starfleet Academy will take place the better part of a millennium after Picard , while the recently announced Section 31 film starring Michelle Yeoh just simply doesn’t seem particularly relevant.

It’s possible that Paramount is sitting on a Star Trek: Legacy show about Jack Crusher, Seven of Nine, Raffi, and Sidney La Forge (the Titan/Enterprise’s helmswoman and daughter of Geordi La Forge) going on some epic Q-uest. But we won’t know until it’s actually announced — and so far, Paramount is keeping quiet.

Update: Speaking to Entertainment Weekly , Matalas said “Jack’s got a lot to do, let me tell you.” The showrunner confirmed that Paramount does have a plan for Jack Crusher’s character moving forward, but declined to elaborate or confirm the existence of another new Star Trek show.

LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, Brent Spiner as Data, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Michael Dorn as Worf, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker and Patrick Stewart as Picard in Star Trek: Picard season 3

NOTE: this post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard season 3 episode 10, "The Last Generation"

Though Star Trek: Picard came to an end with the April 20 series finale, it actually looks like this is just the beginning for the newly christened U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-G (formerly the U.S.S. Titan).

There's a lot to unpack from the series finale, so let's jump into it.

How does the Enterprise-D crew save the galaxy?

At the end of episode 9, the Borg Queen's ultimate plan of revenge was revealed. The Changelings and the Borg had been working together to add a hidden pattern in transporters that could connect all young people to the Collective.

Using a signal to all of the ships in the fleet, the Queen could use Starfleet's new ship-link technology to put the entire fleet at her disposal. No more Borg assimilation, this was about evolution. Her goal was to destroy the space station that protected earth and then launch an attack. Once that was done, the Borg could control the galaxy. Jack (Ed Speleers) was the "voice" of the signal, so the only way to disconnect the signal was to disconnect Jack and destroy the ship.

Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the original Star Trek: The Next Generation crew — Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Worf (Michael Dorn), Data (Brent Spiner) and Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) — are on the Enterprise-D, the only ship not connected with the rest of the fleet because of its antiquated technology.

Picard, Riker and Worf beam aboard the Borg cube to find Jack and the source of the signal, but soon it looks like once the signal is disconnected, the ship will explode and they'll all die. Picard plugs into the Borg hive to get a message to Jack. Meanwhile, the young crew members aboard the rest of the ships in the fleet are killing anyone who hasn't been assimilated, and the space station eventually falls.

Just when it looks like the end is nigh, the Enterprise-D team manages to blow up the source of the signal thanks to Data's fancy flying. Troi locates the away team and off they fly, escaping the Borg ship just in time. As soon as the signal stops, the young crew members return to normal and the fleet stands down.

How does the Star Trek: Picard finale tease a spinoff?

After Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of the Enterprise-D save the galaxy once again, all is well in the universe. The crew meet at Ten Forward and play a game of poker, the way they did back in the good old days.

Raffi (Michelle Hurd) has been promoted to First Officer on board the Enterprise-G, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as the new captain and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) as an ensign and the captain's special counselor. Sidney LaForge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) is still at the helm, too.

It would have been possible to bring the show to an end after revealing that everyone has a happy ending, but that would have been too easy. Instead, the show leaves the door open — and by "open" we mean the finale blew the door off the hinges so there’s no closing it now — for more.

Every Star Trek captain has a catchphrase. From "engage" and "make it so" to "punch it," it has become a tradition among captains, especially new captains. Toward the end of the episode, Raffi reminds Seven that there's a very long history of every captain's first official act of command. "Writing the opening line to your legacy," Jack adds, adding pressure. The bridge eagerly awaits Seven's catchphrase, but the scene cuts away before she can say it.

But that's not all. In a mid-credits scene, Q (John de Lancie) shows up. Evidently Q didn't die in Picard season 2; the powerful being decries the inability of humans to think beyond the confines of linear time. Q informs Jack that while his father’s trial has ended, Jack’s trial has just begun.

All this signals a grand new adventure. After all, Star Trek: The Next Generation began and ended with Q, so it's only fitting that he is there at the end of Picard to kick off something wholly new that features the "new" ship and the "new" crew.

It's even more promising knowing that the Enterprise-D is intact and waiting for an adventure, and so too are the members of the crew. After reuniting in Picard season 3, the TNG cast seems all too willing to return to the fold and a potential new show featuring the Enterprise-G crew battling Q is the perfect way to integrate them into the story.

With his many powers, it's entirely possible for Q to snap his immortal fingers and manifest any member of the TNG crew anywhere he pleases, which is a fantastically brilliant tool when it comes to telling stories. Q can send anyone backwards or forwards in time, and he can also summon anyone from anywhere — alive or dead.

Furthermore, we'll go out on a limb here and mention the one key absence from season 3: Jack's half brother, Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton), who made a brief cameo in season 2. Wesley became a mystical Traveler and hasn't been seen or heard from since he left three decades prior, so it would be very fitting to have Wesley arrive to help his brother combat Q’s merry mayhem.

We don't know what the future holds for the crew of the Enterprise-G, but it's safe to say that  Paramount Plus and showrunner Terry Matalas have something planned. Matalas told Entertainment Weekly after the finale aired that "Jack’s got a lot to do, let me tell you." So it looks like the continuing mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise will continue.

You can watch the entire Star Trek: Picard series right now on Paramount Plus .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

Star Trek: DS9’s Jake Sisko Joining Starfleet Was Never Going To Happen

  • Jake Sisko's choice to become a writer over joining Starfleet Academy was a deliberate and refreshing departure from fandom expectations.
  • Nog's surprising path to becoming a Starfleet officer subverted viewer expectations and added depth to DS9's storytelling.
  • By exploring Jake's career as a writer, DS9 was able to delve into new aspects of life in the Federation, enriching the show's narrative.

There was never a serious chance of Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) joining Starfleet Academy in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and an episode from season 2 proves it. As the young son of the widowed Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Jake Sisko was set up as DS9 's answer to Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) from Star Trek: The Next Generation . However, Jake took a very different path to Wesley in DS9 , choosing a career as a writer and journalist over a place at Starfleet Academy. During DS9 's Dominion War arc, Jake's career gave Star Trek the opportunity to explore new aspects of life in the Federation .

One of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's smartest decisions was to put Nog (Aron Eisenberg) on the path to becoming a Starfleet officer instead of Jake. It subverted audience expectations of both DS9 's Ferengi characters and the character of Jake Sisko. DS9 put a full-stop on the question of Jake Sisko applying to Starfleet Academy in the season 2 episode "Shadowplay", written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe. In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , Robert Hewitt Wolfe explained why Jake's decision about Starfleet Academy fit perfectly into the three plots that comprise season 2's "Shadowplay" :

" They're all about the unreality of appearances. Everyone would think Jake would want to be a Starfleet guy, but he doesn't. You'd think Bareil was on the station to see Kira, but the truth is that Quark lured him there. And then there's the girl, who seems real, but isn't ."

Rene Auberjonois Star Trek: Enterprise Appearance Contained A Massive DS9 Callback

Ds9’s jake sisko in starfleet was never a serious consideration.

There's a matter-of-fact way to how Jake Sisko's Starfleet Academy aspirations - or lack thereof - are dealt with in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . This suggests that there was never an intention to redo Wesley Crusher's Starfleet journey . In fact, the character outline for Jake Sisko in DS9 's 1992 writer's bible makes no mention of Jake wanting to follow in his father's footsteps. In fact, it references the death of Jennifer Sisko (Felecia M. Bell) and how it's inspired Jake to dream " of going to live on Earth " because " he knows that his mom would still be alive if they did not live in space ".

This is in sharp contrast to Wesley Crusher who, despite the tragic death of his father Lt. Commander Jack Crusher, still wanted to pursue a career in Starfleet. Jake's disinterest in Starfleet is sensitively handled in "Shadowplay", as he gets a job working with Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) who encourages the young man to speak to his father. Jake's discussion with his father is beautifully understated, and never becomes emotionally overwrought. The whole issue is touchingly resolved by Sisko asking his son to " Find something you love, then do it the best you can. "

Chief O'Brien reveals to Jake that he gave up a potential career as a talented cello player to join Starfleet, a nod to his cello playing in Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Jake Sisko In Starfleet Could Never Have Bettered Wesley Crusher’s Star Trek: TNG Arc

Jake Sisko joining Starfleet Academy would only have been a carbon copy of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Wesley Crusher arc . Star Trek: Deep Space Nine never wanted to repeat TNG 's past glories, and always pushed the franchise in new directions. If Jake had joined Starfleet Academy two things would have happened; either he would have grown disillusioned like Wesley in "Journey's End", or he would have become an exceptional officer like his father. Neither of these potential stories are dramatically interesting, so it's a relief that DS9 chose to make Jake a writer instead.

By making Jake Sisko a writer, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine could explore the place of literature and journalism in the Federation, something that had rarely been explored before. Indeed, the loss of one Star Trek kid from Starfleet Academy allowed another to fly. Nog's Starfleet career told the story of what happens when, unlike Jake or Wesley, nobody expects you to succeed. This meant that the reward of Nog's Star Trek: Deep Space Nine story was far richer than it would have been if Jake Sisko had followed his expected path.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

Star trek: discovery’s enterprise crossover made 1 of burnham’s crew very happy.

One member of Star Trek: Discovery's crew loves Constitution Class starships and Disco meeting the USS Enterprise must have made him happy.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

  • Lt. Commander Gen Rhys, Discovery's Chief Tactical Officer, revealed his love for 23rd-century Constitution Class starships.
  • The USS Discovery fought alongside the Constitution Class USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which must have thrilled Rhys.
  • Star Trek: Picard's Jack Crusher is also an admirer of Captain Kirk's Constitution Class USS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 reveals one of the USS Discovery's crew was very happy when the USS Enterprise crossed over. In a shocking twist, the Starship Enterprise intercepted the USS Discovery in the final moments of Star Trek: Discovery season 1's finale. This opened the door for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to take command of the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Pike, along with Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) proved to be so popular, that they received their own spinoff, which became Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery have left their 23rd-century lives long behind. Now living in the year 3191, Burnham and Discovery are hot on the trail of the Progenitors' ancient technology that can create life , itself, which was discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D in the 24th century of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Aboard the USS Discovery, Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is under orders to get to know his new crew, which led to a revelation about Lt. Commander Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) and his love for Constitution Class starships.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery's gen rhys loves strange new worlds' uss enterprise, discovery teamed up with the enterprise in season 2.

During Lt. Commander Gen Rhys' extremely brief meeting with Commander Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "JInaal," he was asked to describe something personal in 20 words or less. The USS Discovery's Chief Tactical Officer revealed he loves Constitution Class starships. Rhys told Rayner and Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman:

"I'm a real ship-head. Love the Crossfield, but something about the curves of a 23rd-century Constitution Class just gets me."

Rhys was the USS Discovery's Tactical Officer throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and Gen must have secretly been thrilled when the Disco teamed up with the USS Enterprise . The classic Constitution Class Enterprise, NCC-1701, was kept out of the fighting during the Klingon War, but it saw plenty of action when it joined the Crossfield Class USS Discovery in the final battle against Control. Lt. Rhys, as he was ranked at that time, likely enjoyed being so close to the most legendary Constitution Class ship in Starfleet before Discovery jumped to the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Picard's Jack Crusher Also Loves The Constitution Class USS Enterprise

"all those perfectly clean retro lines.".

Long after Starfleet retired the 23rd century Constitution Class, the USS Enterprise found another admirer in the 25th century: Star Trek: Picard' s Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). In Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 6, "The Bounty," Jack confessed his love of Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) USS Enterprise-A to Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) when the USS Titan-A was docked at the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime :

"Well, this one's my personal favorite. Kirk's Enterprise. All those perfectly clean retro lines. Yep, I'm definitely a Constitution Class man."

The reverence Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard have for the 23rd-century Constitution Class isn't surprising. The Starship Enterprise boasts an iconic design, and it's one of the most distinctive and unforgettable spaceships in pop culture. Star Trek has featured numerous beautiful starships, but the Crossfield Class USS Discovery and the Constitution Class USS Titan-A are essentially variants of the original USS Enterprise design . The 23rd century Constitution Class USS Enterprise is a true classic, and Lt. Commander Gen Rhys got to see it up close in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 2.

A 'Star Trek: Picard' Spin-Off Could Be Like "James Bond in Starfleet"

Long before 'Star Trek: Picard' ended, we spoke with showrunner Terry Matalas and star Ed Speleers about the future of the characters.

[Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of Star Trek: Picard ] Star Trek: Picard may have provided much-needed and incredibly satisfying closure on thirty-five years of Star Trek history, but that doesn't mean that fans aren't eager to see the story boldly go on in a spin-off. Especially after that post-credit scene which neatly positioned Jack Crusher ( Ed Speleers ) on a path that may just mirror his father's ( Patrick Stewart ) life-long journey with Q ( John de Lancie ). But it wasn't just the post-credit scene that has fans— and cast members —energized about the idea of continuing the story of The Next Generation 's next generation through a series like Star Trek: Legacy , it's the way Picard brought together a merry band of misfits that fit together beautifully.

While Star Trek: Picard 's Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas has been careful to remind fans that there currently are no plans for a spin-off series , he does have the lion's share of ideas for how the story could continue, should Paramount+ decide to greenlight the series. Ahead of the series finale, Collider spoke with Matalas about where the launch point would be with a potential spin-off series, and naturally, he focused on the crew of the newly christened U.S.S. Enterprise -G. In his words, he explained:

"I think I would want it right there with them. I think the idea of Captain Seven, Jack Crusher, Raffi as Number One, the La Forge sisters, and Esmar and Mira, I would love to see the crew of that Enterprise out there as the next generation, mixed in with a lot of these legacy characters again. I think that they've never been better and more interesting."

Continuing on, Matalas highlighted a specific piece of dialogue that likely resonated with a lot of fans once they reached this moment in the episode, saying, "The line, 'I can't believe Starfleet saw fit to give a thief, a pirate, and a spy their own ship.' That just really excites me so much. Ed is so charismatic as the legacy of Picard. He has all the qualities of Gates McFadden [and] Patrick Stewart, and then he's entirely his own. He's James Bond in Starfleet. Tell me you don't want to see that show. I would love nothing more. I have 1,001 ideas as to what to do, so, hopefully, the television fates will allow it to happen."

RELATED: ‘Star Trek: Picard’: A ‘Legacy’ Spin-Off Series Would be Fantastic, Says Gates McFadden

Jack Crusher as James Bond in Starfleet

While Captain Shaw ( Todd Stashwick ) definitely stole the show with his surly disposition, tough love, and tragic death, it's undeniable that the heart and soul of Season 3 were owned by Jack Crusher, Jean-Luc Picard, and Dr. Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ) as their familial bond was explored and put to the test . The prospect of a series centering around the child of Picard and Crusher is an exciting one, especially now that we've seen him in action. His cocksure attitude, dazzling charm, and the fun chemistry that was only briefly showcased between him and Sidney La Forge ( Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut ) felt like an appetizer for an even more delicious meal.

Of course, when we spoke with Speleers ahead of Star Trek: Picard 's premiere , we had to discuss the prospect of continuing the series through a spin-off. He was full of praise for Matalas, who has evidently swept up his cast in the magic of his vision, in the same way that he has captured the hearts of the show's audience. Speleers shared:

"I feel that the great thing about Terry is, as I had mentioned previously, he knows Star Trek: Next Gen inside out. He is the best man to carry this forward. I feel that there's a whole plethora of stories to be told for Jack, which could incorporate still the Next Gen cast, maybe. But also, you mentioned Seven of Nine. There's a whole world to be created that's half already there, but Terry's got it in his head. I mean, I would love, genuinely from the bottom of my heart, I would love to keep playing Jack Crusher. I mean, Terry and I have talked wistfully about it. He says, "I hope I'm having a conversation with you in 15 years' time where you're like, ‘No, Terry, I'm not doing another episode,’” because I've done so many of them by that point. We both want it. He completely swept me up in his dream and his vision, and I'm on board with it. I cannot wax lyrical enough about my experience on this project and playing this role. And I want to do it for as long as I possibly can."

Could a Fan Campaign Be the Answer?

Star Trek fans are no strangers to pushing for what they want. In fact, in the history of fandom, it was Star Trek fans that mounted the first-ever large-scale fan campaign which successfully saved Star Trek: The Original Series in 1966. And this was long before fandom was at the tips of our fingertips on social media, and before casts and creatives were a tweet away from fans. Paramount+ has a lot of exciting things on the horizon for Trek, including the recently announced Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and the highly anticipated Section 31 spin-off movie , fans are going to want more of the perfection that was Star Trek: Picard .

In the interview with Speleers from before the final season aired, he spoke to the idea of fans getting the word out about their desire to see the story continue, saying:

"I mean, please put it out there. I want to put it out there. I mean, I can't speak for what people like and want and need, but I feel that this season, I think we've done quite a good job. I think it's going to really grab people's attention, especially people who are Next Gen fans. It takes you off into a world that I don't think it's been done before. It's such a tightly put-together story, and it builds, and it builds, and it builds. And it has humor, and it has nuance, and it has action, and it has all the fun things you want from Star Trek . But it's also grounded in human behavior, drama, and family. What more do you want? What more do you want from entertainment? What more do you want from Star Trek ? Please, push it, push it out there."

Perhaps Star Trek fans should make "Push It!' their catchphrase while advocating for this story to continue on with Star Trek: Legacy . It has a certain ring to it, just like "Make it so." Whether the story continues, rest assured fans will be able to conjure up their own stories to fill in the gaps until we're reunited with Jack, Sidney, Alandra ( Mica Burton ), Raffie ( Michelle Hurd ), and Seven ( Jeri Ryan ) again.

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard is streaming now on Paramount+.
