2022 Tour Championship: Picks and Predictions for East Lake

The 2021/22 PGA season draws to a close this week after nearly 12 months of action.

What started last September in California at the Fortinet Championship will conclude with the FedEx Cup finale this week, the 2022 Tour Championship at East Lake.

After two weeks of this year’s FedEx Cup playoffs, 125 has been whittled down to 30 as the best in the world head to Atlanta, Georgia, for a shot at an 18 million dollar prize and the opportunity to become the FedEx Cup champion.

The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings at the end of last week’s BMW Championship earned the right to play at East Lake this week, but that number has since been reduced to 29 following Will Zalatoris’ unfortunate withdrawal on Tuesday.

The Tour Championship employs a staggered stroke system and as a result, Scottie Scheffler will begin the week at 10-under-par after the world number one reclaimed the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings last week in Wilmington.

Here is how the rest of the 29-man field will begin the week behind Scheffler on the leaderboard:

Scottie Scheffler  -10

Patrick Cantlay -8

Xander Schauffele -6

Sam Burns -5

Cam Smith, Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Sepp Straka, Sungjae Im -4

Jon Rahm, Scott Stallings, Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick -3

Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Joaquin Niemann, Viktor Hovland -2

Collin Morikawa, Billy Horschel, Tom Hoge, Corey Conners, Brian Harman -1

K.H. Lee, J.T. Poston, Sahith Theegala, Adam Scott, Aaron Wise – E

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, has played host to the season-ending Tour Championship for each of the last seven years now. The Donald Ross designed gem first welcomed the event back in 1998 and it has held the event on numerous occasions since.

The Par 70, 7,300 yard plus layout is another course that provides players with a complete tee-to-green test. East Lake’s fairways are narrow and challenging and its’ Bermuda grass greens, in typical Donald Ross fashion, are tricky and fast.

With the staggered stroke start, many sites are offering two different markets this week when it comes to outrights, both with and without strokes. Below is a look at the top 5 favorites in both categories over on WynnBet.

Pick To Win: Xander Schauffele  (+650)

(With starting strokes)

Schauffele will head into the Tour Championship four shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler but with a better track record around East Lake than arguably anyone else in the entire field.

Xander has finished outside of the top 5 at East Lake just once in his last six starts and he was a winner here back in 2017.

Schauffele showed a bit of rust at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in his first start since the Open Championship at St. Andrews, but last week he started to resemble the player who won three times this season once again.

His 3rd place finish at last week’s BMW Championship shows his game is sharp at the right time as he heads into the PGA season finale. It has been a fantastic year for Xander and I like his chances of capping it off in style with this year’s FedEx Cup title when all is said and done.

Pick To Win: Collin Morikawa  (+2500)

(Without starting strokes)

I’ll take a shot with Collin Morikawa in the without starting strokes market this week to compile the best 72-hole score at the 2022 Tour Championship.

It has been a somewhat disappointing season for Collin Morikawa after his incredible run over the past couple of years, but after a couple of missed cuts, the 2021 Open Champion has started to piece things together during the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Collin was 5th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship two weeks ago and last week at the BMW Championship he was right in the mix all week before a disastrous Sunday, 79, soured what had otherwise been another fantastic week.

Morikawa has made two appearances at East Lake thus far in his career with finishes of 6th and 26th respectively. It is a locale that should suit his game perfectly with Morikawa’s excellent combination of accuracy and elite ball-striking.

Next. 2022 Tour Championship: Top 10 power rankings at East Lake. dark

I’m willing to write off his disastrous Sunday round and instead look at his overall performance over the past couple of weeks. He is too far adrift of Scheffler in the overall scoring to have a chance at the FedEx Cup it would seem, but I like Morikawa’s chances of racking up the best score over 72 holes this week.

the tour championship tips

We’re down to the final event in the 2021-22 PGA TOUR season, and there are $18 million on the line.

Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to claim his first FedEx Cup win, starting the tournament at 10-under par and two strokes ahead of Patrick Cantlay. Will Zalatoris was set to start at 7-under, although he had to withdraw due to a pair of herniated discs in his neck.

With so much money on the line from top to bottom this week, everyone will have something to play for until their round ends on Sunday, no matter where they stand on the leaderboard.

What’s important to remember in betting this event is that you have the option of picking the lowest 72-hole score or the winner of the tournament, who will win the FedEx Cup. Our staff has laid out their picks, which are specific to either market, below.

the tour championship tips

2022 Tour Championship Picks

Rory mcilroy – with staggered strokes, +1000 ( wynnbet ).

Jason Sobel : Most players might feel a bit daunted to start the week a half-dozen strokes behind the leader. Maybe they’d even blame an imperfect format and never quite be in the right frame of mind, knowing they’d be chasing right from the opening tee shot.

However, for McIlroy, this might be everything he’s ever needed.

Think about it: How many times have we seen him trailing by this many shots after the first (or second, or third) round, only to battle back to a place where we collectively say, “man, if he’d only had a few more holes, he could’ve caught the leader …” Well, he’ll have those extra holes this week. I can’t wait to watch a presumably aggressive McIlroy, armed with the knowledge that he’ll need to step on the gas pedal, on a golf course where he’s won in the past.

Throw in the karma narrative of the PGA TOUR’s most vocal leader winning the season-ending title in the most tumultuous year ever and I like the idea of playing McIlroy as a chaser.

the tour championship tips

Matt Vincenzi : There isn't a golfer on TOUR who can compare to Rory McIlroy when it comes to success at the Tour Championship.

In his past seven trips to East Lake, he has finished outside the top seven (without starting strokes) only twice. The 33-year-old has two FedEx Cup Championships on his resume and is the only player besides Tiger Woods to have won the FedEx Cup more than once.

McIlroy had an extremely impressive BMW Championship last week at Wilmington Country Club. He led the field in Strokes Gained : Tee to Green (+10.6) and would have gotten deep into contention if it wasn't for an atrocious week with the putter. McIlroy did lose 4.6 strokes to the field putting, which was his worst performance in the category since March 2021.

Overall, McIlroy has had a strong year on the greens so I don't expect his struggles to continue at a course where he's been so comfortable throughout his career.

Rory will start the week at 4-under and will have a lot of work to do to catch Scottie Scheffler at 10. It may seem like a tall task, but McIlroy himself was able to win the TOUR Championship in 2019 despite starting at 5-under. In fact, he won the event by four strokes despite starting with the stroke disadvantage.

If he repeats last week’s tee-to-green performance and manages to have a positive putting week, McIlroy could become the first golfer in history to win the FedEx Cup three times.

Xander Schauffele – Without Staggered Strokes, +1100 ( BetMGM )

Chris Murphy : There are a couple of places per year where you can always count on Xander Schauffele to show up with his best game, and certainly East Lake Golf Club is amongst that group.

Schauffele has been one of the best players at this course in SG: Total over the last few years and, as noted by Justin Ray, he has the best score relative to pay since 2017 in this event at 54-under during that stretch. Justin Thomas is the next best, 13 strokes behind at 41-under.

Schauffele is also carrying some form into the week as he played from the final pairing on Sunday at the BMW Championship but fell just a few strokes short.

I won’t be surprised one bit if he is in the running for the tournament, alongside the low gross score, which really gives me some value at +1100 on BetMGM without the starting strokes. This is a category he won back in 2020, and I expect him to be right there again this week.

Tony Finau – With Starting Strokes, +2000 ( Caesars , FanDuel , WynnBet )

Joshua Perry : Finau is in a good run of late, with a couple wins and a fifth-place finish at the St. Jude in his past four starts. He wasn't as sharp last week at the BMW, but overall, he's playing better than he ever has in his career.

Overall, Finau's East Lake results have been spotty, but he's finished seventh twice, so he is capable of putting up a good result here. He's in that starting range I like, as well, opening six behind Scheffler, but only five guys are ahead of him. He knows if he can go low and get off to a fast start, he can be in contention.

For this type of bet, I want that aggressive mindset, as opposed to the guy at the top who feels like he already has a lead to defend.

the tour championship tips

Jon Rahm – Without Starting Strokes, +900 ( BetRivers , Caesars , DraftKings )

Derek Farnsworth : Rahm was my pick to win last week and while he ultimately finished in a tie for eighth, I was very encouraged by what I saw. He started his first 27 holes at five-over par and was nearly dead last in the field at that point. Something seemed to click in his game the rest of his second round and he carried that over into a bogey-free weekend. Rahm finished his final 45 holes at 14-under par, which was the best in the field.

East Lake requires accuracy off the tee if you want to score, but it’s also the longest par-70 on the PGA TOUR. A combination of accuracy and distance is preferred this week and Rahm carries both of those in spades. He’s first on the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained : Off-the-Tee and in Total Driving this season. He’s also first in greens in regulation.

Looking at those statistics, it’s hard to believe that Rahm has had such a down year, but he can right a lot of those wrongs with a big week at East Lake.

Rather than taking Rahm to win the tournament outright, I am taking the slightly worse odds and betting him to finish as the lowest 72-hole scorer. He tied with Kevin Na for the lowest 72-hole score at East Lake last year and I like his chances to repeat in this regard. Starting seven shots back from Scheffler, we can expect Rahm to be aggressive from the very first hole.

the tour championship tips

Collin Morikawa — Without Starting Strokes, +2800 ( DraftKings )

Landon Silinsky : Morikawa posted a 10 on last Sunday at the BMW en route to his final-round 79. This dropped him all the way to T44, which is likely why we are getting such big number on him here in a 29 man field.

Prior to last week, Morikawa had shown signs of life at the FedEx St. Jude, finishing T5, which was his best performance since the U.S. Open. The top of the board does not present a ton of value this week, so taking a stab at on one of the most talented golfers on the planet at close to 30-1 sounds good to me.

East Lake and TPC Southwind, where Morikawa finished fifth at two weeks ago, are both Donald Ross designs and are quite similar. You will need to be accurate off the tee and hit long irons well. It was not that long ago when Morikawa was No. 1 in the world and he can easily remind everyone of that this week.

Scottie Scheffler plays his tee shot on the 3rd hole during the final round of the BMW Championship.

The remaining 30 players on the PGA Tour head to Atlanta, Georgia for the final event of the 2022-2023 season. This tournament has undergone a number of structural changes over the years. Starting in 2007, it was the final event of the four tournament FedEx Cup playoffs, with eligibility determined by FedEx Cup points accumulated throughout the season. From 2019 onward, the FedEx Cup was reduced to three events, and the Tour Championship moved from mid September to late August. What also changed in 2019 was the addition of a staggered start. The PGA Tour wanted to ensure that the winner of the tournament this week would also be the winner of the FedEx Cup.

The player with the most FedEx Cup points leading into this week ( Scottie Scheffler ) will begin the tournament at 10-under par. The player with the second most points ( Viktor Hovland ) will begin at eight under par. The player with the third most points ( Rory McIlroy ) will begin at seven under par, and so on down to the fifth at five under par. Player ranked six through 10 will begin at four under, 11 through 15 will begin at three under, and so on, all the way down to numbers 26-30, who will begin at even par. East Lake Golf Club has been the Tour Championship’s home since 2004, and it is once again sure to provide a stern test for the game’s very best.

Before we get into our picks for the Tour Championship, make sure to take a moment to check out these awesome sports betting offers for this week. We have teamed up with OddsChecker to ensure that you claim $1000s in first-bet bonuses so that you can bet on these 2023 Tour Championship selections with more confidence this week.

Tour Championship: Course Preview

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia was designed by Donald Ross in 1913, but it received a substantial renovation by Rees Jones over the last fifteen years. Rees enacted his usual method of pinching in the fairways, adding bunkers and adding length, and East Lake now features the most narrow fairways on the PGA Tour. Jones’ methods have not necessarily made the course more challenging however, as last year it ranked 24th out of 38 courses in scoring difficulty, and we saw 17 rounds of 65 or better. Of course, much of that has to do with the fact that much of the fat has been trimmed, and all 30 players that have made it to this week are here for a reason.

East Lake still features some gnarly and unpredictable Bermuda rough, and it ranked ninth out of 38 courses in missed fairway penalty, and sixth out of 38 courses in rough penalty. Unlike other mid scoring to tougher courses Bermuda courses such as TPC Southwind, TPC Sawgrass, and PGA National, East Lake is not defined by its water hazards. Water only comes into play on four holes and East Lake ranked 32nd out of 38 courses last year in penalty strokes. East Lake is a death by 1,000 paper cuts course, far more in the same vein as Innisbrook than the aforementioned water intensive tracks.

Outside of the Bermuda rough, East Lake’s greatest defense is its stout quartet of par threes, which all play over 200 yards. While playing from the fairway is certainly essential at the Donald Ross design, nearly 40% of strokes gained over the last two years have come via approach. We’ve even seen inaccurate drivers find some modicum of success here with elite approach play. The green complexes here, unlike other Ross courses, are actually incredibly benign and provide very little pushback. East Lake ranked amongst the easiest on the PGA Tour last year in strokes gained around the green and putting difficulty. The formula this week is accurate driving combined with a mix of precise short iron and long iron play. The starting strokes obviously throws an interesting wrench into the betting markets this week, but East Lake remains a proper ball-striker’s course where we can take our chances with the flat-stick.

Tour Championship: Outright Winner

Scottie Scheffler (+162) (Bet $100 to collect $262) Bet365 has the best Scottie Scheffler odds

There is really only one fitting solution to this PGA Tour season, and that’s Scottie Scheffler running away with the FedEx Cup after his historic ball-striking run. With another top-five finish at the BMW, his 12th of the season, Scheffler was up to his old tricks once again. The former Masters Champion gained over 13 strokes ball-striking at Olympia Fields, which is the best that he’s hit the ball since the Memorial. Once again, his flat-stick prevented him from crossing the finish line.

Fortunately for him, East Lake features some of the easiest and most straightforward greens on the PGA Tour, and it is a difficult golf course to chase on. Scheffler generally spots a stroke or two on the field every week with his putter while lapping the field in tee to green. Even if he gives back one or two on the greens, it’s hard to imagine that anyone catches him on this golf course. Scheffler remains the number one driver of the ball, and number one approach player in this entire field, and East Lake is the perfect golf course to accentuate his ball-striking prowess and mask his putting woes. We’re due for a runaway, and this is the week we’ll get it.

As you can see, it is imperative that you compare the  Tour Championship odds at OddsChecker.

Scottie Scheffler is now best-priced at +162 at Bet365, +150 at BetRivers, +140 at DraftKings, and +135 at FanDuel, a stark $27 to $12 difference in returns. Make sure to pick the best sportsbook for your Scottie Scheffler pick with OddsChecker.

Russell Henley (Without Starting Strokes) (+3300) (Bet $100 to collect $3,400) Go to Bet365 to get the best Russell Henley odds

Considering I feel strongly that Scottie Scheffler is going to run away with the actual FedEx Cup, let’s turn our attention to hunting for value in the “Without Starting Strokes” market. While it is to let fly under the radar, there are few players in the world playing better golf right now than Russell Henley. The Georgia alumni just put together his third top-10 finish in a row at the BMW Championship, where he finished second in an elite field to only Scottie Scheffler in tee to green. Henley now travels to a golf course in East Lake that should be far better suited for his game than Olympia Fields.

The three-time PGA Tour winner is one of the biggest risers both from tee to green and with the flat stick when placed on Bermuda golf courses, and his four top-10 finishes in a row at the Donald Ross-designed Sedgefield Country Club should be translatable to success at East Lake as well. While Henley has not played the Atlanta staple since 2017, he has a 12th and a third in two starts at East Lake, gaining over four strokes to the field in both occurrences. This is unsurprising, considering that he is the only player to rank top-five in this field in both accuracy and overall approach play. I am completely enamored by Henley’s course fit, and I see a tremendous amount of value on him to shoot the lowest 72 hole score in his native state of Georgia.

Golf betting tips: Tour Championship predictions with best odds & free bets

the tour championship tips

Tour Championship betting tips

  • Viktor Hovland to win - 9/2 at William Hill
  • Max Homa top five finish - 11/5 at Bet365
  • Xander Schauffele outside pick - 30/1 at Betway

Scottie Scheffler is the big favourite to win the Tour Championship at East Lake this weekend thanks to his two-shot lead carried into the tournament.

The world No 1 may not have had his hands on a major this season but has been in fairly solid form over the summer and looks well-placed here to claim victory.

The American will be up against it though. Chasing him down are two golfers who have doggedly kept up with Scheffler in the PGA rankings all year: Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

What’s more, a lightning finish to his summer has catapulted Viktor Hovland into the mix and  UK bookmakers  have had to dramatically cut his odds.

The Tour Championship is open to just 30 of the world’s top players and there is no cut here. The golf odds are, naturally, shorter across the outright markets but there are pockets of profit to be had from this competition.

There’s an $18 million bonus at stake here and East Lake is one of those courses that rewards accuracy over everything else. As such, we don’t need to look at sluggers, just those who know how to approach the greens and keep their heads down.

That’s what aided Hovland in his win at the BMW Championship last weekend and it’s something that both McIlroy and Xander Schauffele could benefit from here.

It all begins on Thursday and we’ve taken a look at the latest golf betting markets to provide three picks for the Tour Championship below.

Back Viktor Hovland to win

Perhaps we’re jumping the gun here by picking Hovland, winner of the BMW Championship only a few days ago, to go one extra and claim victory this week but there is good reason behind the selection.

Hovland has flown under the radar this summer but the Norwegian has been posting some steady results. Tied 13th at The Open and the St Jude Championship, he also won the Memorial Tournament back in June. He was two shots off Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship and placed in the top 10 at the Masters.

Hovland keeps his head down and plays smart golf. His course record 61 in the final round at Olympia Fields on Sunday featured just one putt longer than 15ft on the back nine.

With approach play like this, Hovland has more than a good chance of claiming victory at East Lake. William Hill slashed their odds from 10/1 to 9/2 on Hovland to win after Sunday and he starts Thursday’s first round on -8, two shots off Scheffler.

Tip:  Viktor Hovland to win - 9/2 at William Hill

Back Max Homa for a top five finish

Max Homa overcame a heckler who had bet against him at the BMW Championship to finish T5 at Olympia Fields and is in a great position to place again here.

In a short field of just 30 of the world’s top golfers, finding a regular place-finisher isn’t easy. Homa has placed in the top 12 in his last four tournaments – an excellent rebound after failing to make the US Open cut.

Homa had a great 2022 but didn’t impress at the big events. He is only just getting some real consistency under his belt and the Tour Championship has come at just the right time. Indeed, he joins Rahm, Scheffler and McIlroy as the only players to surpass 2,000 FedEx points this season.

Bookmakers have set a pre-tournament price of 28/1 for Homa to win the $18 million top prize. However, shorter odds of 11/5 with Bet365 on a top-five finish look realistic.

Tip: Max Homa top 5 finish - 11/5 at Bet365

Back Xander Schauffele as the outsider

As we mentioned above, East Lake rewards smart, reasoned golfers who keep their heads when approaching the green. Step forward Xander Schauffele who, alongside McIlroy, has the best strokes gained stats on this course. Schauffele’s tee-to-green play is unrivalled at East Lake and he is third for putting.

Combined, the world No 6 is a formidable player and is due a run at a trophy. His T8 finish at the BMW Championship was his first top 10 place since the US Open. He isn’t in great form but East Lake suits his steady game.

He starts on -3 alongside Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley and Rickie Fowler. Fleetwood is another form man and could well rival Schauffele for an each-way pick here.

Betway have already nudged Schauffele’s odds down from 33/1 to 30/1 following a steady flow of money backing the American to win. Perhaps the punters know what’s coming this weekend.

Tip: Xander Schauffele outside pick - 30/1 at Betway

Meanwhile, Grosvenor Casinos  is an established gambling business but their online sportsbook is relatively new, yet they offer a slick user experience and an excellent sign-up offer whereby new customers can get double the odds on their first bet.

That means you could take our advice and back Hovland to win at 9/1 rather than 9/2, for example, and winnings are paid out in cash rather than free bets which gives punters more control over how to make use of potential winnings.

Better yet, Grosvenor will even allow each-way bets to qualify for this offer, which lends itself very well for golf betting. Odds are subject to change. Always read the full terms and conditions when signing up to a promotional offer from a betting operator.

Sunday brought confirmation that Rory McIlroy is this year's Race to Dubai champion, simultaneously rewarding the player who has performed best in DP World Tour events this season, while exposing some niggles with the system as it is.

Personally, I'm not at all concerned by the fact that the crown can be placed atop anyone's head before the season finishes. Sometimes, someone is deserving of that and having won two Rolex Series events and played so well in three of the four majors, McIlroy fits that description.

The greater issue for me is where the Race to Dubai really ranks in the priorities of players like McIlroy and Jon Rahm, who both decided not to play for big points in South Africa. For Rahm, skipping the Nedbank equated to giving up any hope of winning the Harry Vardon trophy for just a second time, which already feels like too low a number for a player of his talents.

How do you solve it? Perhaps by holding successive events in the Middle East to finish the season, which is exactly what will happen next year. Both of them are set to offer enormous purses, first in Abu Dhabi and then in Dubai, so while many have expressed frustration at how 2023 has panned out (and some of them have done so while wilfully ignoring changes that have been made), 2024 should serve up a more fitting climax.

do not use

For now we do still have a DP World Tour Championship to play for, and the lack of Race to Dubai incentive hasn't made a bit of difference to the field. All 50 qualifiers are here, 10 of them representing the European Ryder Cup side, and three of them arguably the best trio of male golfers it's possible to find right now: McIlroy, Rahm, and Viktor Hovland.

There's also the rather large matter of PGA Tour membership, which will be awarded to the top 10 players on the Race to Dubai at the conclusion of this tournament who are not already exempt. I wonder if this only further tips the scales in favour of the better players, because for youngsters like Rasmus Hojgaard, Ryo Hisatsune and Yannik Paul, playing for a life-changing status upgrade is a big weight to carry.

Hojgaard currently occupies the final spot but if you're in any doubt about what's at stake, note that at least half a dozen players could pass him with as little as a top 10 if he finishes last. Perhaps a better way to demonstrate the volatility at hand is this: every non-exempt player in this field, right down to 50th-ranked Dan Brown, would earn a PGA Tour card if they can somehow win this prestigious title.

I'll be seriously impressed if any one of them can do that, particularly given the fact that Rahm, McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick have won here seven times between them. With Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood equally comfortable at the Earth Course, a modern par 72 built for strong drivers, this just isn't a week for throwing darts.

Preference among the favourites is for Rahm, narrowly, over McIlroy. The latter was in sparkling form at the course on Monday and is at his best when freewheeling so demands respect, but since Rahm came to Jumeirah Golf Estates it's been his territory. His scoring average since a debut win is fully a stroke lower than McIlroy's and, in four appearances, just three players in total have finished ahead of him.

At 11/2 he's perhaps a shade bigger than I'd expected and should head the betting, but all of the market leaders run the risk of being underdone and while that didn't stop Max Homa last week, it's not what I'd consider ideal.

Let's cook...

As such, I'll take them on with MIN WOO LEE , already a Rolex Series winner and a player who has come a heck of a long way in the subsequent two years.

  • CLICK HERE to back Lee with Sky Bet

Lee has cracked the top 50 again thanks to several top-class displays in 2023, starting with second place in the desert. From there he's established himself on the PGA Tour where he'll enjoy full status as of January, contending in The PLAYERS and then going on to finish fifth in the US Open, also playing nicely for 18th in the US PGA.

Just about as long as they come off the tee and with exquisite touch around the greens, the Australian only needs to dial in his wedge game to become a genuinely world-class player and while still inconsistent, in general that department has continued to improve as he tries to keep pace with his sister, Minjee, arguably the best ball-striker in women's golf.

Min Woo can take the next step up in his own career at the Earth Course, where he's been 16th and 12th in two starts so far – despite little help from his usually reliable putter. On debut he topped the par-five stats and ranked second in strokes-gained tee-to-green, a formula which should've seen him contending behind Collin Morikawa, and then last year he again ranked higher in the tee-to-green stats than his eventual finishing position.

straight back into it. wentworth, lets cook 🔥🤝 @DPWorldTour @BMWPGA pic.twitter.com/h2TUlIBaK5 — Min Woo Lee (@Minwoo27Lee) September 13, 2023

Now back as an established star, whose social media smarts and trademark stinger have already endeared him to so many, Lee is also in red-hot form. His victory in Macau might not have been in the deepest of fields but he was 10 shots clear of third place, before a closing 65 for sixth in the ZOZO, played at a course which is far less suitable than this one.

His form in the UAE over the past two years reads 4-16-35-12-2-13, he's bullied the scoring holes here at the Earth Course, and he's one of a handful of players I could see going toe-to-toe with McIlroy and Rahm and coming out on top. At 16/1 and upwards he's well worth each-way support as I expect him to produce his best finish yet in this event.

From a purely value perspective I strongly considered Shane Lowry next, despite the fact that he too returns to action following a prolonged post-Ryder Cup break.

The last time these players gathered for a DP World Tour event was at Wentworth, when Lowry was a shade bigger than the likes of Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick and Hatton at around the 18/1 mark. While those players are all the same price or shorter for this, Lowry has almost doubled to 33/1, despite being a former runner-up at the course.

Perhaps he was a bit short for Wentworth and is a little bit big for this, but I can't say I like much else about his chances despite a win over in Abu Dhabi and will instead favour ADRIAN MERONK , who can cap his ascent to the PGA Tour in style.

  • CLICK HERE to back Meronk with Sky Bet

While some felt Lowry kept Meronk out of the Ryder Cup side the truth is that Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg did, and we can all do without going over that debate again. Ultimately, these are three enormously talented players and Luke Donald had to omit one of them.

Meronk though has certainly felt a sense of injustice, understandably so, and it fuelled a fourth win in little more than a year after a dazzling finish in Spain. Granted, he did make everything that week, but in general his long-game has remained solid and that was the case in the Nedbank Challenge where one bad round kept him out of the places.

The Earth Course definitely suits him better. Meronk, a Dubai resident during winter, has practised here a lot and knows what damage his imperious driving can do, which we saw when he carded a closing 66 on debut and returned to go one better with a third-round 65 last year.

Adrian Meronk was a 22/1 winner for Ben Coley

Meronk had been out of form at the time, nowhere near the levels he's reached subsequently, yet ranked third in strokes-gained approach in a performance which served as a springboard to his subsequent coming of age in the Australian Open.

Back now having added titles in Italy and Spain to go with those he'd already won in Ireland and Australia, he should be able to improve on what he's done here off the tee and while his short-game hasn't been particularly good of late, these huge greens should prove something of a leveller.

Beating elite players is the next step for Meronk, his victims so far having been just a level below that, but with the Race to Dubai now out of reach and his PGA Tour card guaranteed, he might just feel like a weight is off his shoulders.

Without it he looks a threat to the favourites and he's generally held his own when playing alongside the game's elite.

Norrman looks a good price

Matt Wallace is a former runner-up here, one of those three players to have finished ahead of Rahm in fact, and merits respect having reminded us all of his abilities under the gun with that victory on the PGA Tour back in March and kept to a good level of form since then.

There's a similar case to be made for Alex Bjork, a brilliant iron player whose putter went cold last week, but he's limited off the tee and preference is for his compatriot VINCENT NORRMAN .

  • CLICK HERE to back Norrman with Sky Bet

While he fell over the line to win the Barbasol Championship before stealing the Irish Open with a late surge on a strange final day, Norrman has ultimately won twice in 10 starts since striking form this summer and has no real pressure on him here.

Prodigious off the tee, his driving was excellent on his Sun City debut last week, as it has been almost every time he's played since July, and that club should open up all kinds of opportunities at a big, far more straightforward golf course which features four par-fives and a driveable par-four.

Vincent Norrman was a 50/1 winning selection for Ben Coley

Norrman followed his K Club win with a good top-20 finish at Wentworth, a course which often removes driver from the equation, and it's not difficult to excuse a missed cut at the Shriners following a month off which had been overdue.

Solid enough under less-than-ideal conditions in Japan, he stepped forward at the Nedbank where experience generally pays and while he lacks it in the Middle East, this kind of golf is far more familiar. As with Meronk and Lee, his status for 2023 is secure and he's the kind of powerhouse who could go seriously low at the Earth Course if the rest of his game improves ever so slightly from last week's encouraging display.

It's also worth saying that Norrman will be eager to justify his decision to focus on the DP World Tour, as while he has his PGA Tour card, he's 80th in the FedEx Cup and could've elected to prioritise qualifying for some big-money events in 2024.

Winning this could see him jump as high as second on the Race to Dubai and he might just be up to it. Certainly, if we're to get the favourites beaten then I expect it'll be with someone who can match the likes of Rahm and McIlroy off the tee, a category this trio all fall into.

2024 Corales Puntacana Championship Tournament preview

The Corales Puntacana Championship Tournament is this week, and the PGA Tour is in the D.R. for an opposite-field event while the RBC Heritage unfolds. This golf course is long but plenty gettable for players of various lengths off the tee.

2024 Corales Puntacana Championship Tournament rankings: Top 10 expert picks

1. Nicolai Hojgaard: Hojgaard had a taste of the Masters lead and then fell down quickly. Here's hoping he's a quick learner.

2. Alex Noren : Noren is such a consistent ballstriker that it makes sense for him to hold up well this week.

3. Billy Horschel : Horschel isn't the longest player, but he does embrace tougher conditions when they come. He's been playing better lately.

4. Mark Hubbard: Hubbard has been consistently good all year, and he's having a strong year in the FedEx Cup. He beats up on weaker fields.

5. Victor Perez: The Frenchman has thrived on the DP World Tour in tougher weather conditions, and he can here, too.

6. Aaron Rai: Rai isn't the longest hitter, but I love him in windy conditions. He fared well at the Mexico Open.

7. Ben Griffin: Griffin isn't playing as well this year as last season, but he has made three cuts in a row, including a T-17 at the Valspar.

8. Bud Cauley: Cauley has been playing really well in his return to the PGA Tour, missing just a cut this season. Contended at PGA National.

9. Davis Thompson: DT has been playing pretty well, missing one cut in his last five PGA Tour starts.

10. Matti Schmid: A high-variable player, Schmid hasn't missed a PGA Tour cut since the Cognizant Classic and has sprinkled in some good finishes.

Power Rankings: Corales Puntacana Championship

Power Rankings

Change Text Size

There are opportunities, and then there are opportunities. The Corales Puntacana Championship is, well, both.

The second Additional Event of 2024 is one of three tournaments with a PGA TOUR-long three consecutive breakthrough winners. Four of its six champions since debuting in 2018 were first-timers. But while a coronation awaits all in the field of 132 in the Dominican Republic, there are many secondary goals in play as well.

For details of what they are, how Corales Golf Club will play and more, continue reading below.

OTHER TO CONSIDER

  • Mark Hubbard … He’s cashed in all 10 starts in 2024 with a season-best T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he’s been teasing something special for a long time, notwithstanding his successful marriage proposal in 2015. Profiles best on shorter courses like those on that rota but he’s T5 in par-5 scoring and firing well enough on all cylinders in his prime to be a threat just about everywhere.
  • Rafael Campos … The native of Puerto Rico has been a long-time visitor to the Dominican Republic, so it’s not surprising at all that he’s never missed an edition of this tournament despite limited action as a PGA TOUR member. His career-best finish occurred at Corales Puntacana in 2021 when he fell one short of pushing Joel Dahmen into a playoff. With a similar ethos with which he’s familiar at home, it’s like a sixth major even though he’s never made a start in a defined major and the Puerto Rico Open (on paspalum) is the non-major nearest and dearest. It’s also where he recorded a season-best T18 a little over a month ago.
  • Chan Kim … After a few flashes of his potential sprinkled across six seasons, including nine starts in 2021-22 that eliminated his rookie eligibility as a first-time member in 2024, the 34-year-old has found a pocket that allows his ball-striking to shine. He’s cashed in seven straight upon arrival and eight overall with a T8 on paspalum at the Mexico Open at Vidanta and a pair of T14s, including his most recent start at the Valero Texas Open. A weapon has been his play with the cut line in view. Currently fifth on TOUR in second-round scoring average with nothing but scores of par and better contributing.

Additional Events, like this annual trip to the eastern edge of Hispaniola, pay forward into so many objectives.

That’s an important lane because winners of opposite events don’t automatically qualify for Signature Events, just as they don’t get into the next Masters with the same victory. However, berths into the 2024 PGA Championship and the 2025 editions of The Sentry and THE PLAYERS Championship are promised.

The Corales Puntacana champ also banks 300 FedExCup points and will be set with a PGA TOUR membership exemption in the winners category through 2026.

At 7,670 yards, Corales Golf Club is long by anyone’s standards, but it’s a stock par 72 that’s surrendered scoring averages from a half-shot to a full shot under par most of the time. That’s a proper target again this week as the weather will be seasonable, so it will be predictable. Passing clouds will cover daytime highs in the low 80s while prevailing breezes pushing in from easterly directions will be steady but not significant.

Corales Puntacana is the third track in the last nine weeks that’s blanketed with paspalum, specifically Supreme. The fourth and final course on TOUR equipped with paspalum is El Cardonal at Diamante, host of the World Wide Technology Championship in the FedExCup Fall. Paspalum has paid off handsomely for a subset of veterans, including Garnett who prevailed in the inaugural edition at Corales Puntacana in 2018. His victory in Puerto Rico a month ago also was on the surface.

As a resort course, fairways at Corales Puntacana are welcoming. The field can have at it off the tee as the only rough is just an inch or so deep, but average-sized greens prepped to run 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter help protect scoring.

While Quail Hollow Club, which will host the Wells Fargo in three weeks, never will be confused with Corales Golf Club, the duo shares a trio of challenging holes at the conclusion of their rounds. Before the field at Quail Hollow contends with The Green Mile that wraps that trek, this week’s entrants will be tackling The Devil’s Elbow, a par-4-3-4 test at the finish line. Each of the holes has averaged over par in all five editions of the tournament when it’s been held in the spring. So, there’s likely to be more surrendering of a lead than emerging to grab it late.

NOTE: ShotLink is not utilized for this tournament.

2024 Masters TV schedule, coverage, live stream, channel, how to watch streaming online, golf tee times

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 masters on tv or streaming live.

2024-masters-flag-schedule-g.jpg

The most wonderful time of the golf season reaches its conclusion Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters started as a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world and Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite. Scheffler held that same position entering Round 4 and has only increased his advantage as the Masters rolls ot a finish.

Scheffler is looking to become the 10th golfer in Masters history to win two green jackets in a three-year span, and given his level of play over the last two years, no one is doubting he can accomplish his goal. Should he do so, he would pick up a $3.6 million winner's check out of a record  2024 Masters prize money allotment -- a $20 million purse .

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday with his worst score in a major championship round. Tiger rebounded Sunday while playing his 100th round at Augusta National  but nevertheless signed for a 16 over, his worst score to par at a major and the second-worst round overall across his professional career. (At least he wasn't among the major stars who missed the cut .)

Be sure to follow Masters live leaderboard coverage throughout the final round on Sunday for scores, analysis and highlights. It's a perfect second-screen complement to the Masters viewing experience provided to you by CBS.

While attending the Masters is a dream for many, simply being able to watch golf on the grandest stage of them all is an incredible treat each year, and we here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the Masters throughout this week.

CBS Sports offers extensive, week-long coverage across all its platforms with its traditional 18-hole broadcast coverage beginning with the third round on Saturday and final-round action on Sunday. Jim Nantz, in his 39th consecutive year covering the Masters, serves as host for the 37th time. 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman joins Nantz as the lead analyst at the Masters for the second time. Nantz and Immelman link up with CBS Sports' incredible golf team, including on-course reporter Dottie Pepper and the legendary Verne Lundquist, who will be calling his final Masters.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much Masters as possible on Sunday. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and download the CBS Sports app  to watch Masters Live on your mobile device.
