Terminals 1, 2, and 3 directly connect to the airport's five concourses. You'll find the central arrivals hall in Terminal 3.

Getting from Vienna airport to the city is quick and easy, largely because all car, bus, and train services are within a minute or two of arrivals. So you can get your first coffee and cake in town shortly after landing.

If you’d prefer to get a good night’s rest before continuing into Vienna, then consider a hotel near the airport (with two just a short walk from arrivals).

Otherwise, here’s where to go for transfer services, taxis, express & local trains, transfer buses, and car hire…

Option 1: Transfer service

The Welcome people offer a pickup & transfer service * to your accommodation for not far from the same price as a taxi from the line.

Use an easy online English-language form to pre-book a car transfer into the city with a local, English-speaking driver.

Option 2: Taxis etc.

The taxis use the same nearby outside location as the buses (see below).

The limousine and taxi companies have booths in the arrivals hall just opposite and to the left of where you emerge after passing through customs. The cost usually starts from something like €40 for smaller vehicles into Vienna (at least when *prebooked*).

Another option is, of course, a car sharing service or simply get yourself an Uber, for example.

Option 3: Trains

When you come out of customs into airport arrivals, look right to find a ramp that leads you down directly to the train station under the terminal.

To the right of the top of the ramp are two important booths:

• The CAT ticket office and ticket machines

The CAT is the fast dedicated express airport train * that travels direct to the central Wien Mitte station, which connects with the U3 and U4 subway lines for onward journeys within Vienna.

• The ÖBB ticket office and machines ( national rail services and slower S7 city train to the centre)

A display board gives departure times for all trains leaving the airport for Vienna and elsewhere.

The machines have English displays for buying whatever tickets you need to reach your destination. A single ticket to the city on the slower municipal train service (S-Bahn) was €4.40 at the time of writing.

Down the ramp, you quickly reach platforms for the CAT service and the S7 S-Bahn city train into Vienna; these are your two main options.

The CAT is faster and much more comfortable and spacious than the S7, but costs more. For more details on the differences, stops in Vienna etc., see the article on getting to the airport .

Option 4: Buses

Just ahead of you as you leave customs and enter airport arrivals, slightly to the left and right, are corridor exits to outside the terminal. The bus stops are immediately outside.

The Vienna Airport Lines (VAL) run various services to different destinations in Vienna.

Their routes take you to the edge of the city centre (Schwedenplatz), to Westbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof rail stations, to the area around the Messe Wien event venue, and to the UN / Austria Centre and nearby hotels : see their VAL website for details.

Option 5: Car hire

Car hire services at Vienna airport obviously include all the major brands.

Some of the car hire desks are immediately to your left when you come out of baggage reclaim and customs into the public arrivals hall. If yours isn’t, then continue left, down the ramp and then go right at the bottom.

It’s a little convoluted, but simply follow the car hire symbol (a car with a key), and also look for signs to the “car rental centre”, which you reach on Deck 0 of the P4 multi-storey car park. You pass through a train station area on your way.

Vienna International Airport ( Flughafen Wien-Schwechat VIE  IATA ) is the busiest and biggest airport in Austria . It is just outside the city limits of Vienna on the far side of the City of Schwechat. The airport is the home base of Austrian Airlines [dead link] .

Vienna International Airport has one terminal separated into three check-in areas. Check-in 3 is used by the Austrian Airlines Group, Emirates, Qatar and most Star Alliance members. Check-in 1 (formerly known as Terminal 1) is used by various oneworld and SkyTeam airlines. Check-in 2 is being refurbished.

Flights [ edit ]

Most European airlines and a significant number of intercontinental airlines have direct connections to Vienna. However, only Austrian Airlines fly to the American continent (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, Miami, Toronto, and Havana), and there is direct service to some countries in Africa ( Egypt , Algeria , Ethiopia and Tunisia ). South and Central America are not served directly.

Schwechat is integrated into the Star Alliance network, with all European Star Alliance members having a direct flight from their main hubs (usually country capitals), as well as secondary cities. In particular, Lufthansa, the parent company of Austrian Airlines, flies directly to Vienna from all of their bases, including flights by its low-fare sister airline Eurowings from smaller German airports. Those flights can be booked on a single ticket with Lufthansa or Austrian flights.

Skyteam has a significant presence at the airport - apart from flights from European hubs of most members, there is a direct flight to Seoul-Incheon by Korean Airlines.

Low-fare airlines have a rather small but increasing presence in Schwechat, mainly by Lufthansa Group flights operated by Eurowings and Easyjet. Ryanair prefers to use the nearby airport in Bratislava . Vueling flies between Vienna and Barcelona El Prat , Palma de Mallorca , and Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Rome-Fiumicino , Norwegian has flights to Oslo , and Transavia has direct flights to Rotterdam and Paris-Orly .

Ground transportation [ edit ]

To get to Vienna, you can use two different railway options (cheaper but slower S-Bahn and more expensive but faster CAT), buses or taxis. If your final destination is not Vienna, it might make sense to take one of the direct ICEs (Inter-City Express trains).

• S-Bahn ( commuter rail ) ( underneath terminal ). 05:00-24:00 . S-Bahn suburban trains run on the S7 line to Vienna providing the cheapest connection to the city centre. Take a train bound for Floridsdorf (or Laa a.d. Thaya), which departs every 30 minutes (at :18 and :48), and get off at Wien-Mitte station on the eastern edge of the city centre (25 min). There are luggage boxes for €2.50 for 24 hours. From there the U-Bahn line U3 connects to Stephansplatz right in the core of the city centre, whereas line U4 provides service to Karlsplatz (for the Opera House) as well as the Donaukanal and the Schönbrunn Palace. Transfer is available to the U1 and U2 at Praterstern and U6 at Handelskai. Departure is one level below arrival on a separate platform from the CAT. Tickets can be purchased from the red vending machines (credit cards accepted). There are vending machines next to the ramp in the arrivals hall, on the mezzanine level down the ramp, and on the platform. A single ticket to Vienna costs €4.40 and includes the use of subways, trams, and buses. The new operating system of the machines can be confusing. You first choose who is travelling (number of people and which discounts apply), then you choose your connection (S-Bahn S7). If you already have a travel pass for the core zone (Zone 100), you only need to buy a ticket from the airport to Schwechat, where the core zone starts (€1.90 in Aug. 2022). Other variants using the zone system are possible (at the VOR homepage , point at Tickets & Preise and click on Wochen/Monatskarten and Tarifzonenplan). Ticket controls are infrequent but conductors do not hesitate to fine anyone ( €100 ) without a valid ticket, and being a tourist is not a valid excuse. Be sure to validate the tickets with the machine before boarding the train. €4.40 each way . ( updated Oct 2023 )

• Long distance trains: ÖBB trains depart to Austria's major cities and Germany, with stops at Vienna Main Station (Hauptbahnhof) and Meidling. Hauptbahnhof has transfer to U1, Meidling to U6. Departs every 30min (at :03 and :33); travel time 18 min to Hauptbahnhof. Good alternative to the City Airport Train. The new private company operating the Austrian network is WESTbahn It only has one route towards Salzburg, stopping at Linz and other major cities. A good place to catch up one of these trains is at Vienna Rennweg, where the line 7 of S-Bahn stops on its way from the airport.

• Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz line goes to the city center (District 1). Buses every 30 minutes, operating 24/7, the trip takes 20 minutes. At Schwedenplatz there is a connection to the underground lines U1 and U4 as well as buses and trams. St. Stephans Cathedral (the very center of Vienna) is a five-minute walk away.
• Westbahnhof-City Hall-Schottentor line is connecting the big train station, with stops on the way near Rathaus and University - a good choice for business travellers. Travel time approx. 45 min.
• Kaisermühlen VIC/Kagran line goes to Vienna International Center (the UN) and serves hotels in the eastern part of Vienna. Runs hourly and takes 20-45 min. depending upon destination.
• Taxi . Cab fare is not set, so agree before getting in; to anywhere for €25-30. If you don't care to negotiate, or your destination is at the northern or western edge of the city, a pre-booked flat-rate transfer is likely cheaper and easier. There are several offices at arrivals. Note, that when catching a taxi on the street, the driver has to charge an empty ride back from the airport to the Vienna city limits, as a taxi from Vienna is not allowed to accept passengers outside of the city. Therefore, a pre-booked transfer might be cheaper.  
• Shuttle provided by hotel . Select Vienna hotels offer guests shuttle service to and from the airport, usually for a fee that's cheaper than a taxi, sometimes you will share the shuttle with guests from your own or nearby hotels.  

Get around [ edit ]

Schwechat is not an especially complicated or large airport, but do note that while gates B, C and D are close to each other and the check-in area, the lengthy extension containing gates F and G is physically removed and may require some time to traverse if you have a connection to catch. No travellators or people movers are available to help you do that.

Wait [ edit ]

There are three main airport lounges at the Vienna International Airport - the two smaller AIR and JET lounges, as well as the SKY lounge complex divided into the Schengen and Non-Schengen sections. The SKY lounge complex is also where you find the Business Class, Senator and HON Circle Lounges of Austrian Airlines, which can be used by Austrian's passengers with an appropriate flight ticket of a higher class, as well as eligible Miles & More members and other Star Alliance loyalty programmes members.

Wi-Fi is free and not time-limited.

Eat and drink [ edit ]

Several gastronomic outlets of various standards are available both airside and landside. They range from McDonald's and Burger King to concessions run by Vienna's famous delicatessen and restaurants. While the burger places have the same prices as in the outside world, the upscale restaurants are pricier than in the city. When on a tight budget, look for one of the supermarkets (Billa, Spar) and buy food for normal supermarket prices.

Buy [ edit ]

Vienna airport has a duty free shopping area with 70 shops. Plan around one hour if you're going to visit every other shop. The shopping area is just after ticket control counters, so you only need to check in before getting to shops, not pass security check nor passport control.

A general grocery store, Billa, can be found downstairs in the check-in area 1. It has Austrian Mozartkugeln and small snacks for usual Austrian prices. Once the check-in passed special prices do apply. In the arrival area there is a Spar supermarket.

Tax refund [ edit ]

Refer to the brochure for locations and tips. Your best bet for receiving tax refund is to find a refund office in the city. Otherwise, indicate that you need to receive tax refund at check-in. You then take any checked luggage containing tax-free purchases to a customs office (right in the check-in area) to get a stamp and drop off the checked luggage; then visit a nearby refund office.

Customs officers don't normally ask you to actually unpack and show your purchases. You will be asked if any applicable purchases are in your hand luggage. Although it is illegal, you may be encouraged to lie to agents, saying that everything is in your checked luggage even if it isn't. This is due to an otherwise tedious process; you have to visit yet another office by the gates. (Especially at the C Gates—there you will have to ring for an officer, wait to be picked up by bus and taken to the a refund office and back to your departure, allow 1 hour for the whole procedure.) Alternatively, you can visit a refund office on arrival in your home country—provided that you visited customs and had your receipts stamped in Vienna. Additional commission or unfavourable exchange rate can apply if refunding in other country.

The Vienna International Airport (airline code/ Vienna airport code VIE) is located in Schwechat around 16km (10 miles) southeast of Vienna.

The airport is one of the largest hubs for flights in central Europe and especially well suited for flight to Eastern Europe too.

There are two train services that ply the route: the City Airport Train services between VIE and Wien Mitte/Landstrasse, and the Express train S7 which also stops in several parts in Vienna. Modern terminal facilities include a 24-hour medical center, a pharmacy, over 80 shops, cafes and restaurants for passengers who are awaiting their flights along with conference and business facilities. The VIE is also equipped with facilities for the disabled and handicapped.

Taxi from Vienna Airport to City Center

A taxi from Vienna airport to city center costs around €30 and takes 30 minutes (depending on traffic of course). The taxi lines are directly outside arrivals and the lines are usually not too long.

Right before the exit of arrivals there also booths of taxi companies, such as ATS (Vienna Airport Transfer Service) Vienna. They sell flat fee taxi tickets to the center, the price of ATS is between €35 and €40 depending on the destination district. Taking a regular taxi outside of the arrivals building may be cheaper.

But honestly, we would rather recommend you to book a private car before landing in Vienna. The driver is very professional and always on time. You can book online here and you’ll be sure to arrive at your hotel pretty quickly, comfortably and stress-free.

Vienna Austria Airport Lines busses leave every 20 minutes from the airport to the city’s Westbahnhof and Südbahnhof train stations.

The earliest bus leaves around 06.00am, the latest around midnight.

CAT – the City Airport Train in Vienna

The City Airport Train is a direct high-speed train link from the Vienna airport to city center’s Wien Mitte station.

The trains leave every 30 minutes. The earliest train leaves at 05.37 a.m, the latest at 11.38 pm.

Tickets can be bought at vending machines in the station.

• Time to the city: The train takes just a quick 16 minutes.
• Departure: To get to the train from arrivals follow the green CAT signs.
• Cost: The cost for a oneway ticket with the City Airport Train is €12, a return ticket costs €21.

The S-Bahn is of the public transportation network in Vienna and the cheapest way to get to Vienna from the airport. The trains go to the Wien Mitte train station (same as the CAT).

Land travel by car usually takes an hour from the Austrian capital to Bratislava. A trip by train is even shorter.

A low-cost airline, FlyNiki claimed this particular flight was the world’s shortest. From central Bratislava, it takes 15 minutes to drive to the airport while in Vienna, the trip to the airport is approximately 20 minutes.

We’re probably not telling you anything you don’t already know when we tell you that “going to the airport” isn’t exactly on everyone’s bucket list. But just like every destination is different, so is every airport. And just as navigating a new city is challenging in and of itself, so is navigating a new airport. How do I get from one terminal to the next? What are the best airport restaurants? Is there anything to do if I have a long layover?

If you’re anything like us, then these are probably the types of questions you have that perhaps you don’t get push notifications for. But never fear, because we have answers to your airport questions with our series of guides to the world’s top airports. Today we bring you the TripIt airport guide to Vienna International Airport (VIE).  

About Vienna Airport

Vienna Airport is Austria's largest airport, located just 19 km. (11 mi.) southeast of Vienna City Centre. The quickest way between Vienna's City Center and VIE airport is the City Airport Train, which is 16 minutes non-stop. Vienna Airport Lines (Postbus) connects Vienna Airport with the main Vienna transportation hubs, while VIE's car rental center is located on level 0 of the multi-story car park 4 (P4), and can be reached by a short underground passage. Unique to VIE is a 17 km. cycle route, which links the airport with local municipalities. More details, maps, and info about bike rentals can be found on Vienna Airport's website .

VIE serves as the hub for Austrian Airlines, a base for Eurowings Europe, and a major gateway to central and eastern Europe countries. Vienna International Airport has two main terminals, Terminal 1 (and 1A) and Terminal 3.

Vienna International Airport has several restaurants pre-security that are open to the public, including Air Cafe, Anker , and Brezel Meister, all of which have Viennese snacks like pretzels and Austrian pastries. Also open to the public is Take Off—part pub, part coffee house—featuring everything from Austrian pastries to Bavarian sausages to "brettljause," which is Austria's take on a cheese and charcuterie board. For those passengers who want a sit-down meal, there’s Zugvogel (Terminal 1), Rustichelli Mangione (Terminal 1), Kulinariat (Terminal 3), and Jamie’s Italian . Grab-and-go restaurants include Burger King (Terminal 1), McDonald's (Arrivals), Starbucks (Arrivals), and Pinki Hot Dog (Arrivals). Vienna Airport has also been recognized by PETA, awarded two of three stars in the "vegan-friendly airport" category in 2017.

You can grab a drink in Vienna International Airport at some of the restaurants listed above, like Kulinariat and Take Off, both of which have full bars. Wine lovers can enjoy a selection of European and other international wines at Sky Wine Lounge, or for beer drinkers there’s the Heineken Bar, which overlooks the runway. Other bars include Johann's Biereck (Arrivals), Johann Strauss, and Jamie Oliver's Bar . For healthier drinks of the non-alcoholic variety there’s the Juice Factory , which makes freshly prepared juices and smoothies.  

Like most international airports, Vienna International Airport has a plethora of designer shops, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, Swarovski, Tumi, and Versace. Visitor World – Visit Air

What does it look like in an airplane cockpit, or what happens in the airport tower, or how does a baggage sorting system actually work, exactly these questions are clarified in the visitor world. A multimedia experience world on 600m² provides a first-hand insight into the different areas and tasks of an international transport hub.

Visitors may also sit in an oversized cockpit and experience virtual takeoffs and landings from the pilot’s perspective. Even the airport tower was replicated and shows the airport from the air traffic controller’s point of view.

Guided tour at Vienna Airport

The 50-minute bus tour starts at the VISITAIR Terminal and passes through the airport grounds. The participants will learn a lot of interesting facts and information about aircraft clearance, freight facilities, the airport fire brigade and much more. From the apron, the handling of aircraft from close range is tracked. On request, special round trips – e.g. for children, focusing on “fire brigade” or “A380 tours” – offered!

The tour can be booked from Mon to Sat (including public holidays) from 08:30 to 18:00. An advance reservation is required! The round trips take place between 9:00 and 17:00.

The VISITAIR panoramic terrace offers a fascinating panoramic view – with a length of 306 meters and an area of approx. 1,800 m². 21 meters above the ground, take-offs and landings can be seen from above. If you’re looking for warm weather and outdoor activities, June through September is the best time to plan.

If you want to experience Vienna’s festive mood and Christmas cheer , you should plan around December. Winter is also a good time for a peaceful city break.

Wine lovers can plan during the wine harvest season that peaks in September and October. It’s also the beautiful time of the year when autumn foliage envelops the city’s parks.

The spring months of March and April bring milder temperatures and vibrant spring blooms.

Overall, the best time to visit Vienna would be during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasant and the crowds are fewer. Additionally, you can expect to grab good deals on accommodation, flights, and tours.

How to Get to Vienna

Vienna being one of the most popular cities across the world is easy to get to with several transportation options available.

With a well-served International Airport, there are plentiful airlines, direct and indirect, flying to Vienna from various cities across the world.

If you are coming from one of the neighboring European cities like Budapest, Prague, Munich, Bratislava, or Zagreb, Vienna has a robust inter-country rail network system. It has several train stations, with the main one being the Wien Hauptbahnhof or Vienna Central Station. You can check the timetables, and ticket prices, and book your tickets online using Trainline or Rail Europe.

If you prefer a bus journey, there are several bus companies offering services to Vienna from other European cities. Vienna International Bus Terminal handles tons of international bus connections. Flixbus comes in handy when you want to book bus tickets online.

How to Get to the City from the Airport

With a distance of about 18 km, there are several transportation options available to travel between Vienna International Airport and Vienna city center.

The fastest way to get to the city center from the airport is by riding the City Airport Train (CAT) from the airport terminal. This non-stop train runs every 30 minutes and takes a little over 15 minutes from the airport to Wien-Mitte Station.

S-Bahn is also a great option and affordable too. The S7 line runs between the airport and the city center, with trains departing every 30 minutes wherein a 25-minute journey stops at different stations in the city center, including Wien Mitte and Wien Praterstern. You can choose to take a drop at the nearest to your hotel.

You can opt to board an Airport Bus. Vienna Airport Lines operates quite a few bus routes that connect the airport to different parts of the city. The most convenient one is bus 1187 which runs every 30 minutes and takes 20 minutes to reach Wien Hauptbahnhof, the main train station in Vienna.

The easiest yet most expensive way to get to the city center is by hiring a taxi or ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt. It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach, depending on traffic.

For first-timers, pre-booking an airport transfer is a convenient and hassle-free option. At €36, including full meet-and-greet support and a local, English-speaking driver, it’s fairly priced.

How to Get Around Vienna

Vienna enjoys an extensive public transportation network that makes getting around the city almost effortless and affordable.

The public transportation system includes buses, trams, and underground trains (U-Bahn). Covering the length and breadth of the city, Vienna U-Bahn or Subway is an exceptionally efficient and cost-effective way to move around Vienna.

You can purchase a  Vienna Card  online to get unlimited public transport use for 24, 48, or 72 hours.

Walking can be a great way to explore the city’s historic centre, the cultural heart of Vienna as nearly all the top attractions are within walking distance.

With a good number of bike paths, Vienna makes for a great bike-friendly city. You can rent a bike from one of the many bike rental companies like Citybike Wien and explore the city’s hidden gems on bikes.

For attractions that are out a bit, taxis and other ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt be more expensive, however, be efficacious.

I highly recommend downloading a mobility app called WienMobil from Wiener Linien – no matter how you are traveling around Vienna – by public transport, by bike, by taxi, or on foot – this app literally brings the entire city to your fingertips.

Where to Stay in Vienna

Innere Stadt aka the First District, the historic old town and the heart of the city’s cultural and iconic tourist attractions like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg Palace, and the Vienna State Opera is the best neighborhood to stay in Vienna for the first-timers.

Also, it’s here where you’ll find most of the famous restaurants and cafes.

The neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly so it’s easy to explore on foot. Plus, being the center of the city, it’s also well-connected to the efficient public transportation system of Vienna, so you can easily get to the other parts of the city.

From budget-friendly hotels to mid-range accommodations to luxurious properties to charming boutique hotels – there are plenty of accommodation options in Innere Stadt for every budget and style.

Here are my recommendations for accommodations in Innere Stadt:

Budget travelers will love Palais Elegance Wien , a lovely hotel that offers comfortable rooms, studios, and apartments with modern designs and most importantly, a central location. Each accommodation comes with city views.

A dependable mid-range option in Innere Stadt, Hotel König von Ungarn is the oldest hotel in Vienna. Founded in 1746, the hotel raves exclusively designed and decorated rooms and promises a traditional Viennese ambiance. A lucky find for culture lovers!

Hotel Sacher Wien is Vienna’s premier hotel and is in a class of its own when it comes to luxury. Talking about the location, It’s just opposite the iconic Vienna State Opera – as good as it gets. It offers individually decorated rooms and world-class service.

Next door to the Innere Stadt, MuseumsQuartier in the 7th district (Neubau) of Vienna is a beautiful art center in Vienna and my favorite place to stay in Vienna. It has an artsy vibe and an incredible cultural scene. You can book a stay at the 25hours Hotel at MuseumsQuartier for a unique experience.

Just about a 5-minute walk from MuseumQuartier, in a charming neighborhood of Spittelberg is Hotel Altstadt Vienna , another favorite. Set in a renovated historic building, it’s a gorgeous boutique hotel with an elegant and cozy vibe.

2. Spanish riding school

Hundreds of people bypassed parts of airport security in last year

More passengers are sneaking past id checkpoints and going the wrong way through one-way exit lanes.

An earlier version of this article misquoted TSA spokesperson R. Carter Langston. He said lapses in airport security are a "larger number" than the agency realized, not a "larger problem." The article has been corrected.

Hundreds of people have bypassed some Transportation Security Administration measures at airports in the past 12 months, the agency told The Washington Post, revealing a vulnerability in air travel that has been reflected in a series of incidents.

In November, for instance, two women were arrested at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for breaching a secured exit when they were running late to their flight. Then there was a ticketed traveler at Palm Springs International Airport who walked through an unstaffed body scanner on Feb. 22, leading authorities to evacuate post-security areas as a precaution.

Also in February, a woman at the Nashville International Airport bypassed TSA officers who check IDs and sneaked into the bag-screening line. After her belongings passed through the X-ray, she boarded an American Airlines flight without a ticket. She flew to Los Angeles International, where she was detained by the FBI. She has not been charged; the FBI said it could not comment on a pending investigation.

“It is a larger number than we realized,” said TSA spokesperson R. Carter Langston.

Since March 2023, there have been at least 300 instances of people bypassing parts of airport security, Langston said. He described security lapses as a “trend” that has caught TSA’s attention — and an issue the agency is attempting to mitigate. Security experts say airports and airplanes remain some of the safest public spaces in the United States. But a rise in passengers bypassing security increases the chances, no matter how small, of someone dangerous sneaking through.

TSA declined to share documents that show annual statistics for security lapses or detail individual incidents due to the sensitive nature of information about law enforcement. After this article published, TSA said they don’t consider these incidents to be full security breaches because passengers underwent some checks by airport security or were stopped after getting through.

Since March 2023, TSA reported more than 200 people bypassed “ exit lanes ” that direct passengers to leave “sterile,” post-security terminals so they can get to pre-security areas like baggage claim and passenger pickup zones. These areas are often marked with “no reentry” signs.

Another 80 people evaded the travel document checker, or TDC podium, where TSA agents review travelers’ IDs and boarding passes. Langston said that amounts to about one person in 10 million. Of that 80, Langston said about 85 percent were stopped in the checkpoint area; all people who were caught skipping TDC podiums were still screened by metal detector or body scanner, he said. TSA said there were 29 lapses in 2019, the last full year of air travel before the pandemic. In 2022, there were 72.

From the incidents TSA reviewed, the agency offered different motives for passengers who bypassed security. Langston said the “vast majority do not seem to have evil intent.” Some travelers bypass checkpoints on accident. Some, like the woman in Nashville, want to sneak onto flights. Others may be tired of waiting.

“A lot of people lose their patience with the line regardless of how long or what the wait time might be,” Langston said.

Thomas Carter, TSA’s federal security director for New Jersey, said unhoused people and people with mental disabilities are among those breaching exit lanes, often because they’re confused. But, he said, most unlawful entries through exit lanes are attributed to absent-mindedness or passengers going back for forgotten items.

“Many times it’s left-behind property; people get very upset, it’s almost like they lose their minds. ‘I have to get my cellphone. I have to get my laptop,’” Carter said.

Carter noted a rise in security lapses in Newark before TSA acknowledged a wider trend. He isn’t sure why more people are sneaking through security but said a “change in behavior” among travelers in the aftermath of the pandemic may be a contributing factor.

Tom Mockaitis, a counterterrorism expert and DePaul University professor, agreed with Carter’s assessment of security breaches. “But if it happens at all,” he said, “it’s a concern.”

Mockaitis said since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the United States has gotten “pretty good at hardening airports and aircrafts,” reducing the risk of a terrorist attack. Between TSA and airport law enforcement, which may be affiliated with local sheriff or police departments, airports are equipped to deter or quickly shut down attackers. From the moment you’re dropped off at departures, “you’re under a lot of surveillance when you’re there,” Mockaitis said.

TSA provides the first layer of defense at the airport, screening travelers, luggage and cargo, and deploying air marshals . TSA agents aren’t law enforcement, however, so they don’t physically stop someone in a breach. Their protocol is to call in an incident and direct authorities to the scene. These type of “controlled incidents” make up the vast majority of exit lane breaches, Carter said.

In cases when TSA loses track of a trespasser, or didn’t know about the incident right away, they have to shut down airport operations and evacuate the terminal for screening.

When the traveler in Palm Springs walked through an unmanned body scanner in February, a TSA officer reported the incident to a supervisor. TSA told KESQ News that the airport stopped flights, and travelers in the terminal were required to go through security a second time. The concourses and post-security areas were cleared and searched. The trespasser was not arrested, but local law enforcement referred the case to federal authorities.

Travelers caught intentionally evading security procedures can be arrested and fined anywhere from $140 to thousands of dollars, among other punishments. Entering a sterile area without undergoing screening is a violation that carries up to $4,480 in civil penalties. The two women late to their Phoenix flight were booked with felony charges. Marilyn Jean Hartman, the “serial stowaway” who’s flown illegally at least 22 times, has been given prison sentences for her repeated offenses.

In addition to TSA officers, air marshals and airport law enforcement, airline workers provide another layer of vigilance, including ticket-checking gate agents and watchful flight attendants.

A flight crew caught a George, Tex., man who took a photo of a female minor’s boarding pass to get on a Delta flight . The 26-year-old legally cleared TSA’s security checkpoint with a Southwest Airlines buddy pass. The crew caught him on the plane after noticing he was spending “a significant amount of time” in the bathroom, then checking his name against the plane’s reservations.

The private screening service Clear, which provides an expedited alternative to TSA queues, has also come under scrutiny following breaches in the past two years. Last year, a person passed Clear security after using a boarding pass they found in an airport garbage can. In 2022, TSA officers flagged ammunition in a man’s luggage before realizing he had used false identification to pass through Clear.

The company has since upgraded its screening process; instead of confirming identity using a customer’s iris and fingerprints, Clear will now use technology that screens the entire face. All Clear members are required to update to the new system .

Even with the recent rise of security incidents, Mockaitis says the overall number of breaches is “not a lot” given the millions who fly each year.

“It’s a cause for concern but not alarm,” he said. “I think it should be said [TSA does] a good job performing a challenging task and they’re constantly working to improve it.”

A recent visit to Newark Liberty International Airport illustrated one beefed-up — if low-tech — security measure TSA has introduced: installing solid plastic or glass barriers in place of stanchions with nylon retractable belts. Carter explained the most vulnerable moment of the security process is when a TSA officer is engaged with another passenger.

Mark Howell, a regional spokesman for TSA, told the New York Times that the Nashville stowaway got past TDC by going under a stanchion.

In New Jersey, Carter said these new plastic barriers have “been very effective in helping us prevent any access control events or attempted breach past the TDC.” He said they’ve added even more of barriers to other terminals in the past six months.

TSA says adding more mitigation efforts like physical barriers could bring down the number of security lapses. But Langston said there is no clear plan on how many to add or when, because every airport is different.

“Every single airport knows that this is an issue and it has some mitigation effort employed,” he said.

There are also automated deterrents, like one-way gates that prevent “back flow” through exit lanes. These glass passageways close behind travelers as they move through. They can be found across the country, from the D.C. area to Tulsa to Las Vegas.

However, adding such gates is complicated. In Newark’s terminal B, for example, Carter said exit lanes are too small to accommodate the technology. There’s also the issue of budgets.

“If you look at it from a TSA perspective, if we went to Congress and said ‘We want to put these in every 450 airports in America,’ you’d have a pretty big price tag,” Carter said.

According to a TSA study , in fiscal year 2023 the Department of Homeland Security allocated $94.1 million for roughly 1,300 airport security officers to staff exit lanes. The study found that the money saved from relying on electronic gates would cover the cost of installation within three to five years. TSA also notes in the study that “periods of low activity” around exit lanes can lull security officers into inattentiveness, “increasing the likelihood of human error.”

Some airports have found the funding to build automated exit gates, while others have not, said Christopher R. Bidwell, senior vice president of security for the trade group Airports Council International — North America (ACI-NA).

“We have long been an advocate of Congress providing the funding to TSA to purchase and deploy technology, because at the end of the day, it would save TSA manpower if that technology was deployed,” Bidwell said.
