15 Best Petra Tours

Located in southern Jordan, the historic archaeological site at Petra is one of the country’s most visited places.

The amazing ruins are built into a sheer rock face in a mountain range that runs along the Dead Sea and Gulf of Aqaba.

If the historians and archaeologists are correct, the Petra ruins were constructed many thousands of years ago by a band of Arab nomads who chose the site for its location along a prosperous trading route.

The site can be visited from many regional cities and countries, and tours are available in half-day, full-day and multi-day options.

Below are 15 of the best tours of Petra.

1. Full-Day Petra Tour with Return to Aqaba

Petra, Jordan

After being picked up by an air-conditioned vehicle in Aqaba, tour guests will drive to Petra and enter the one of a kind site through the dramatic and multi-colored gorge that acts as its entrance.

The monument was carved into the vertical stone face thousands of years ago, and you’ll wonder how such an ancient and supposedly primitive people created such an epic and enduring structure.

The area is full of tombs, rock carvings, altars, and even a theater built in a style similar to those in Rome.

Tour highlights include the Ad Deir Monastery and the Petra Nabatean Museum as well.

2. Private Petra and Little Petra Tour from Aqaba

Little Petra, Siq al-Barid, Jordan

This private guided tour and shore excursion will give guests a wonderful insight into the history of Petra, which is one of Jordan’s most visited archaeological sites.

It’s a harsh environment, but the rugged inhabitants not only survived, but thrived as merchants and traders, and built a monument that would last for thousands of years.

You’ll have ample time to explore the site at your own pace, and after hours in the desert sun the air-conditioned vehicle will be a welcome reprieve.

The tour begins and ends at the Port of Aqaba, so it’s convenient and a great value for those arriving via cruise ship.

3. Day-Tour from Eilat, Israel to Petra

Petra, Jordan

If you and your travel companions are staying in Eilat, but want to dedicate a full-day to exploring Petra, this day-tour would be a wise choice.

At 12 hours it’s a bit on the lengthy side, but it includes pickup and drop-off from Eilat, entrance fees to the site and a traditional Jordanian meal at a nearby restaurant.

The tour includes all the area’s highlights and a historical narration from your local guide.

Please note, that since you’ll be crossing national borders, there are fees you’ll have to pay that aren’t included in the tour’s cost, so check the inclusions and exclusions section in the link below carefully.

4. Guided Day-Tour from Amman to Petra

Petra, Jordan

This Petra tour from Amman conveniently includes round-trip transportation to and from your hotel, making it a great fit for travelers who’d rather not fuss with pesky details.

The valleys and mountains in the area of Petra and Wadi Mousa are full of historic sites, and this tour will get guests up close and personal with the most significant among them.

Your guide will be with you for 2 or 3 hours depending on which sites are visited, and you’ll get a thorough and interesting look into the area and its culture and history.

The tour lasts 12 hours and doesn’t include meals, drinks or entry fees.

5. 5-Day Amman to Petra, Jerash, Nebo, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea Tour

Jerash, Jordan

For those who’ve got 5 full days to dedicate to an executive-class tour of the region’s historic and archaeological hotspots, this tour would be a great fit.

3 night’s accommodations are included, and one night will be spent in a desert Bedouin camp, giving guests a truly rare and unique chance to experience the local culture like few will.

As with many multi-day tours, there’s a long list of inclusions and exclusions, so check it out carefully before booking.

6. 3-Day Tour to Petra, Wadi Rum, Dana, Aqaba, Dead Sea

Wadi Rum Desert, Jordan

Though Petra is one of the most well-known of Jordan’s ancient sites, it’s one of many that deserve to be seen, and this 3-day tour will cover many others as well.

It’s a private tour that can be customized to fit the needs and interests of its guests, and the tour’s size is limited to 7, so everyone will get an intimate experience unlike those in large tour groups.

The tour begins and ends in Amman and includes all accommodations and transport, and unlike many other tours it includes a great mix of guided and personal time, so you’ll be able to see the things that interest you, and do it at your own pace.

7. Half-Day Tour from Queen Alia Airport

It’s a truly epic feat of engineering and construction, and lies at the end of a deep and narrow gorge that winds its way back to the site.

The area is littered with carvings, altars, obelisks, and an amphitheater built in the Roman-style that is capable of seating thousands.

Petra — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The ruins carved in the rocky wall at Petra in Jordan.

Tour Highlights

  • Start your Jordan Petra tour by leisurely strolling around the Siq until you reach the Treasury building's renowned detailed facade.
  • Visit the spectacular Amphitheater before moving on to Colonnaded Street and the Qasr al-Bint shrine. Explore the Temple of the Winged Lions, Petra Great Temple, and Jebel Al-Habees Monuments.
  • Climb to the Monastery in the evening to savor the view of the Royal Tombs.
  • If you are more of a hiker, ascend the recently renovated stairs to the summit of Al Kubtha or follow the challenging journey to the High Place of Sacrifice for stunning views of Petra.
  • Head north to Little Petra and check out the ceiling fresco of the Painted Triclinium.
  • Take a guided hike up Mount Aaron, which is equally sacred to Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

Travel Tips

  • It is advisable to get your Jordan Pass before your Petra tour so that you can avoid paying the 40 JD arrival visa fee. You cannot claim your visa expenses if you purchase the pass afterward.
  • Make sure to have a lot of cash on you. You will need it for anything you buy in Petra, including your admission tickets, tips for the tour guides and animal handlers, and other purchases.
  • Avoid being outside for too long or in the heat of the day without a hat, drink, or sunscreen, as Petra can get extremely hot.
  • If you are traveling to Petra in April or May, make sure to carry wraparound sunglasses and proper headgear to protect yourself from sandstorms.
  • There are no set prices for anything you purchase in Petra, aside from food and beverages in restaurants. Hence, it is possible to get scammed with outrageous prices. Always inquire about the prices before you use any service. If possible, negotiate, as the true price is often significantly lower than what is initially quoted in Petra.

Travel tips for our Petra tours

The ideal duration for Petra tours can vary depending on your interests and travel style. However, most visitors find that spending 1–2 days in Petra allows them to explore its main attractions. All of our Petra tours budget at least a day in the area—the majority include a two-night stay in their itineraries.

Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is home to several remarkable attractions that showcase the architectural and historical marvels of the ancient city. While every corner of Petra holds its own charm and significance, here are some of the top attractions to take in on our tours to Petra:

  • The Treasury (Al-Khazneh). Petra’s most famous and iconic structure, The Treasury, is intricately carved into a towering sandstone cliff. It’s exceptionally breathtaking during sunrise and sunset when the light bathes it in warm hues.
  • The Siq. A narrow and winding gorge, the Siq serves as the main entrance to Petra. Walking through this majestic passage, with its towering cliffs and dramatic rock formations, is an enchanting experience. Keep an eye out for the ancient water channels and carvings along the way.
  • The Monastery (Ad-Deir). With its massive carved facade, the Monastery is another awe-inspiring structure in Petra. The journey to the Monastery involves a challenging uphill hike, but the reward is extraordinary. The panoramic views from the top make it a memorable highlight of any visit to Petra.
  • The Street of Facades. As you venture deeper into Petra, you’ll encounter the Street of Facades. This ancient street is lined with monumental tombs and intricately carved facades. It provides a glimpse into the grandeur and craftsmanship of the Nabataean civilization.

Known as the Rose City, thanks to the reddish hue of the rock formations from which it was carved, Petra offers a range of activities that allow you to immerse yourself in its fascinating history and breathtaking landscapes. Some of the most popular activities on our tours to Petra include:

  • Exploring the archaeological site. Exploring the ancient city of Petra is a captivating and immersive experience that takes you on a journey through time. The site is a labyrinth of winding paths, rock-cut facades, and awe-inspiring structures that help you imagine the bustling atmosphere of traders, residents, and visitors that once filled these streets.
  • Hiking to the Monastery or the High Place of Sacrifice. These are two of the most rewarding hikes to take on Petra tours. The Monastery trail takes you up a flight of stairs to the massive carved façade of the Monastery and stunning views. The High Place of Sacrifice, perched high atop a mountain ridge, offers panoramic views of Petra and its surroundings.
  • Visiting the Petra Museum. Located near the entrance of Petra, the Petra Museum offers a comprehensive collection of artifacts and exhibits that provide insights into the Nabataean civilization and the history of Petra. It’s a great place to learn more about the site before or after touring Petra.

You can find a variety of delicious Middle Eastern and Jordanian dishes that reflect the rich flavors and traditions of the region. Here are some of the popular foods you can enjoy on trips to Petra:

  • Mansaf. Considered the national dish of Jordan, mansaf is a traditional Bedouin dish consisting of tender lamb cooked in a tangy yogurt sauce, served over a bed of rice, and topped with nuts and herbs. It is often enjoyed on special occasions and is a must-try dish in Petra tours.
  • Falafel. This beloved Middle Eastern snack is made from ground chickpeas or fava beans mixed with herbs and spices. These deep-fried balls are typically served in pita bread with tahini sauce, fresh vegetables, and pickles. They make for a tasty and filling meal or snack option while touring around Petra.
  • Shawarma. A popular street food found throughout Jordan, shawarma consists of thinly sliced, marinated meat (usually chicken or lamb) grilled on a vertical rotisserie. The tender meat is then served in warm pita bread with a variety of toppings and sauces, such as garlic sauce, tahini, and pickles.

When packing for tours to Petra, Jordan, it’s important to consider the region’s climate, activities, and cultural customs. Here is a list of essential items to pack for your Petra trip:

  • Comfortable walking shoes. Touring Petra involves a lot of walking and exploring, so pack comfortable, sturdy shoes to navigate the rocky terrain. Opt for closed-toe shoes to protect your feet.
  • Lightweight and breathable clothing. Jordan has a desert climate, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing suitable for warm weather. Loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal for keeping cool and comfortable during your visit.
  • Sun protection. Petra can get hot, so pack sun protection essentials like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF. It’s also advisable to carry a lightweight scarf or shawl to protect yourself from the sun or to cover your shoulders when visiting religious sites.
  • Layered Clothing. While the days can be hot, the evenings and early mornings in Petra can be cooler. Pack a light jacket or sweater to layer up when temperatures drop.

The currency used in Petra is the Jordanian dinar (JOD). It is the official currency of Jordan and is widely accepted throughout the country.

Though better exchange rates are usually available overseas, it’s worth ordering some JOD from your local bank to use when you first arrive. You may also find it useful to have a supply of U.S. currency in small denominations when bargaining for everything from taxi rides to souvenirs.

The primary language spoken in Petra, as well as throughout Jordan, is Arabic. Specifically, the Jordanian dialect of Arabic is commonly spoken by locals.

On trips to Petra, Jordan, it’s important to be aware of and respect the local cultural customs and etiquette. Here are some key points to keep in mind.

  • Dress modestly. Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country, and while Petra welcomes visitors from all backgrounds, it’s respectful to dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders, chest, and knees. We recommend wearing loose-fitting and lightweight clothing to stay comfortable in the desert climate.
  • Greeting locals. Jordanians are known for their hospitality, and it’s customary to greet people with a warm smile and a simple “hello” or “salam aleikum” (peace be upon you). A friendly attitude and polite demeanor go a long way in fostering positive interactions.
  • Respect cultural sites and artifacts. Petra is an ancient archaeological site of great historical significance. Show respect by not climbing on or touching the ancient structures, as this can cause damage. Follow any guidelines provided by your Go Ahead guides to preserve the site’s integrity.

Petra travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How long will I need at Petra to see the highlights?

All our   Jordan   trips include at least one full day at Petra, with most itineraries giving keen travellers the opportunity to spend part of a second day there too.

Depending on your fitness level, you will be able to explore The Siq, Treasury, city centre and two to three main sites such as the High Place of Sacrifice or the Royal Tombs in a full day.

When is the best time to visit Petra?

The peak tourism seasons in Petra are between March and May or September to November, when the weather is mildest.

Jordan , the weather can be very hot during summer and very cold during winter.

June to August are the hottest months, with maximum temperatures reaching approximately 40C. There is very little or no rainfall in these hotter months.

Over December and January, temperatures only reach a maximum of about 13C and rain is to be expected

Is it safe to visit Petra?

The safety of our travellers, leaders and operators is our number one priority, so consequently we monitor world events to ensure we amend itineraries when necessary.

Generally, Petra is very safe to visit, although there are two unauthorised trails that will take you to the top of The Treasury that are not on the maps provided and are not deemed to be safe.

Is the ticket price included in my Intrepid trip?

Yes, your local leader will provide you with your ticket and any other information you need about visiting Petra while on your trip.

Make sure you take your passport with you if you’re visiting Petra for two days, as it may be required upon entry alongside your ticket.

Refer to our trip notes for more information about how many days are included at Petra for different itineraries.

How physically fit do I need to be to explore Petra?

We recommend a moderate fitness level on most of our Jordan trips, as Petra covers quite a large area, with many steep steps. However, how much of Petra you see is entirely up to you, and there are plenty of places to sit and rest around the city. If you stay around the lower, flatter parts of Petra, most travellers will cover an average of 12 kilometres over a full day. The walking trails have intensity ratings of easy, moderate and hard, so be guided by the maps you receive with your ticket when choosing which areas of Petra, you are best suited to explore.

Can I visit Petra if I have a physical disability?

In most cases, our itineraries can be amended to accommodate travellers with disabilities.

Since the degree of impairment, and the level of amendments needed to our itineraries, can vary from person to person, please   contact us   to discuss any specific needs you may have.

Is there anywhere to buy food and drinks inside Petra?

Yes, there are a range of cafes and shops inside Petra where you can purchase meals, drinks or snacks.

At the top of many of the walking trails, you will find locals selling refreshments such as tea or soft drink.

We recommend travellers take a reusable water bottle with them so they stay hydrated and avoid buying single-use plastic water bottles.

Should I visit Petra by night?

Subject to availability, your leader may give you the opportunity to undertake an optional activity and visit Petra by night.

Petra by Night takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, but can be cancelled due to bad weather.

The two-hour long show includes a candlelit walk to the Treasury, with local music and entertainment.

Some travellers love seeing the monuments lit up at night, while others feel it is crowded and very touristy. It’s completely up to you whether you go along, but please note it will be an additional cost to your day ticket.

Can we ride the animals inside Petra?

The entrance fee to Petra includes a ‘free’ ride on various forms of animal transport and you will be offered this transport by a number of local Bedouin on the walk into the ancient city. While free to ride, there is a strong expectation that you will need to tip the animals' owners.

In 2018 the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched an international campaign highlighting the mistreatment of working animals in the ancient city of Petra. The animals – horses, donkeys and camels - carry both tourists and supplies to the city and through it.

The situation is a complex one – Jordanian organisations and their international partners are trying to improve the conditions for the animals, and for many local Bedouin this activity provides their only income, yet issues around animal cruelty are raised on a regular basis. UNESCO themselves have stated that switching to motorised transport is not the preferred option in the ancient city.

It is Intrepid’s request that our travellers avoid riding these animals where possible, due to the poor working conditions. On Intrepid trips, animal rides included in our itineraries are only undertaken once animal wellbeing has been previously established by a professional team. You can read our   Animal Welfare policy   for more information.

Top Tips For Visiting Petra, Jordan: The Ultimate Travel Guide

View of The Treasury from the top of the Al-Khubtha Trail in Petra, Jordan

Thinking of visiting Petra, Jordan? From how to get there, to ticket prices and the best time to visit, this guide will help you plan your trip to Petra.

From what to wear and what to see, to how to get there and how much it costs, find out all the answers in this ultimate travel guide to Petra.

I visited the ancient ruins of Petra last month, and before I left the UK I found myself in a Google frenzy.

I was searching all sorts of things…

What should women to wear in Jordan?

How hot is it in Petra?

Do I need to cover my head?

Can I buy food once I’m inside Petra?

Is there water for sale?

How to get to Petra?

How much is the Petra entry fee?

How long does it take to tour the site?

Is it safe to travel to Petra in Jordan?

So many questions! Surprisingly I couldn’t find a Jordan travel blog with all the answers!

I thought it’d be helpful to impart some of my newfound knowledge for any of you who are planning on visiting Petra soon.

The Monastery in Petra, Jordan

How much is the Petra entrance fee (2023)?

As of 2023,  a one-day ticket to visit Petra costs 50 JD (£57 / 70 USD). As there is so much to see, many people opt to visit for multiple days. A two-day ticket costs 55 JD and three-day ticket costs 60 JD.

Children under 12 enter free. Petra By Night tickets cost 17 JD (more info on that below). Remember to take your passport in order to purchase your ticket.

Oh, and if you’re a resident of Jordan it’s super cheap… just 1 JD!

How much does it cost for a guided one day tour of Petra?

Usually, private tour guides for the main trail cost 50 JD. You can organise everything at the visitor centre when you arrive. If you want to plan something in advance, with transport and a tour guide, there are plenty of Petra day tours you can book to travel to the site with.

For example, I visited with Abraham Tours who were very friendly and efficient. Find out more about my experience here .

What time does Petra open and close?

Petra’s Visitor Centre is open each day from 6am to 6pm during the summer and 6am to 4pm in the winter. This is the place to buy Petra tickets, arrange a guide or pick up a Petra map, and what I’d consider to be the Petra opening hours.

However, there doesn’t seem to be an official ‘closing time’, but there are instructions at the front gate saying you need to leave the site by 7pm in summer and 5pm in winter, unless you’ve got a ticket for Petra By Night.

When is the best time to visit Petra?

I’d recommend getting to the site as early as possible. We arrived at 8am and avoided lots of the big tour groups, making for a more pleasant experience.

It can get extremely hot during the day so you’ll want to prioritise the bigger treks in the morning and late afternoon. Also, avoid rainy days as the valley is prone to flooding.

How much is a horse and carriage, donkey or camel in Petra?

You actually get a horse ride included in your ticket at the entrance, but it’s often thought of as a bit of a scam! The owners will ask for costly tips, so if in doubt agree the final fee before you accept the ride, or avoid altogether.

A horse and carriage from the entrance to the Treasury costs 20 JD (two ways) and 40 JD to get to and from the main basin area.

As there are lots of trails, many of them steep with numerous steps, many people choose to travel by donkey. As camels and horses can’t travel up steps, and there is much debate as to how well any of the animals are kept, it’s best to walk unless you’re not very mobile.

Riding donkeys in Petra, Jordan

How long does it take to walk to The Treasury?

At a reasonable pace, it’ll take you around 30 minutes to walk from the entrance, along The Siq, to The Treasury.

The Treasury in Petra, Jordan

How long does it take to get to The Monastery?

At a reasonable pace, it takes around 1 hour 30 minutes from the basin area (just beyond The Treasury) to reach The Monastery. There are 800 rock cut steps to get up there. The thing to remember about Petra, is that you’ll be on your feet all day, so wear comfy shoes.

The Monastery in Petra, Jordan

What are the key sites I have to see on my first visit to Petra?

The Siq, The Treasury, The Monastery, High Place of Sacrifice and the Royal Tombs. It’s too much to see in a day but if you have the chance to stay a few, then that’s the dream itinerary!

What should a woman wear to visit Petra?

While it may be warm, most women were still respectful of the Jordanian culture and chose to cover up. I wore a long skirt with leggings, my Converse trailers, a T-shirt and cardigan.

I took a scarf too. I’d recommend sturdy trainers or walking boots rather than sandals or flip-flops. Here’s some inspiration…

I actually wrote a post to help you pack for Petra:  What Clothes Women Should Pack To Visit Jordan

What should a man wear to visit petra.

Again, most men were in trousers rather than shorts, with a T-shirt and sturdy trainers or walking boots. Here’s some inspiration…

How to get to petra, jordan.

Want to know how to get to Petra, Jordan? Many visit Petra as part of an organised tour – but that’s not the only way! There is the option of public transport from Amman and Aqaba, or you can hire a car and drive.

Driving from Amman to Petra takes about three hours, or it’s just under two hours from Aqaba.

If you’re looking for public transport to Petra,  JETT Bus leaves from Abdali station in Amman at 6.30am and arrives to Petra around 10.30an. It then returns to the city at 5pm.

Or from Aqaba, public buses leave from the central market and travel to Petra. More info here .

You can book a group tour to Petra from Amman here , from Eilat here or Jerusalem here . There are also some from Tel Aviv, Israel if you’re looking at visiting Petra from there.

How much time do I need if I’m visiting Petra for the first time?

How long is a piece of string?! I only had around 6 hours at Petra, but could have easily spent several days. We raced around the site, keen to pack as much in as possible, but it would have been nice to explore at a leisurely pace.

I’d opt for two or three days, and stay at a hotel nearby so you can enter the site early in the morning.

I could write all this info out, but as I snapped this handy pic at the entrance, I’ll let that to the talking.

What is Petra By Night?

Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday there’s magical light show at Petra, with 1500 candles lighting the route to along The Siq to The Treasury.

Along with the beautiful views, there are tales from local Bedouin people and live music.

The experience begins at 8.30pm from Petra Visitor Centre and finishes at 10.30pm. Tickets cost 17 JD. You can find out more here: Petra By Night .

What should I bring to Petra?

  • Big bottle of water
  • Scarf

How safe is Petra?

I’d read a few blogs before travelling, and had a pretty mixed impression on safety at Petra. I was with my boyfriend so didn’t feel nervous, and saw plenty of solo female travellers exploring the site.

I think the biggest dangers are to do with being scammed and ripped off, so as long as you know what price you’re aiming for when you’re haggling, you should be fine!

There are parts where the ground is quite even and rocks are crumbling, so be sure to wear sensible shoes and look where you’re going.

Where should I stay in Petra?

Camping isn’t permitted within the site, so the best option is to book a hotel or camping experience nearby. Have a search, or scroll down for my suggestions…

You’ll find Zain free Wi-Fi points around Jordan, and my phone picked it up next to the Visitor Centre at Petra.

Once out in the site, a few small stalls and café claimed to have Wi-Fi but I didn’t test it out. It was nice not to be looking at my phone all day!

And finally… Are there toilets at Petra?

Yes, of course! Don’t panic if you get caught short. There are toilets around the site, but they’re not everywhere, so pick up a map at the start and plan your route.

There are plenty by the entrance and I found one by The Monastery, which was a makeshift portaloo. It had toilet paper and a bowl outside to leave a small tip for the pleasure!

I appreciate this post! I am going at the end of the month and this is just the info I needed and I am more excited now about staying the camp. Happy Travels

Thank you! It is such a unique experience!

Were you able to sign up for ‘Petra by night’ while on your tour with Abraham tours? We”ll be doing an abraham tour of Petra/Wadi Rum. Did you get to shower? was there running water to brush teeth and stuff….I wish I got more information as to what to expect with Abraham Tours…

Hey Andee! There was a shower with running water at the camp we stayed in near to Petra. It was fine for brushing teeth and washing faces, but as it was chilly outside I chose not to shower that evening! Some people did though – hope that helps. I didn’t sign up for the night time visit to Petra but it may be something you can organise directly with Abraham. It’s an amazing experience so enjoy it!

It literally looks like something out of Aladdin!! So magical!

It really is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been. It’s a tricky one to plan though so hopefully this will help a few people out 🙂

Wow Jordan was never on my radar, but this guide got me interested in it. Thanks for the great and full guide.

Thanks so much! It really is a proper bucket list place! I loved it.

Thank you so much for all the tips Chloe, this is so useful! Petra is definitely on my bucket list. Did you feel safe while traveling in Jordan? P.S. thanks also for writing a small section on how to dress – I’ve seen pictures of girls wearing totally inappropriate stuff uhh.

Thanks so much! Glad you found it useful. I’m working on a whole feature on What to Wear in Jordan for that reason precisely. I was shocked at how disrespectful people were of the culture, just to get that perfect Instagram shot. So bad!

The image of Seven Wonders Bedouin camp is so beautiful! Are they candles that are lit on the cliffs behind? Definitely need to visit Jordan one day!

Thank you Lisa – it was such a wonderful experience. They looked like candles but I think they were large fairy lights as it’d be hard to clamber up to the top to light candles! It’s well worth a trip – totally magical experience and you’d love the photography opportunities there.

I’ve always wanted to visit the Treasury ever since watching Indiana Jones haha, it looks so awesome!!

Ahhh it is soooo amazing! I knew it would be special but it went beyond expectations. Hope you get the chance to visit one day 🙂

What stunning photos! I play Uncharted and this absolutely reminds me of that. I’d love to visit Petra but I’ve always been reluctant to plan because it’s so meticulous! This is a really cool straightforward guide, though!

Thank you so much! I hoped it would cut the jargon and give people a simple to follow guide. I found a lot of the info around very very confusing! Hope you get the chance to visit one day – so worth it, I promise!!

Did you get a camel or donkey ? If so how much should we pay? with the animals take us the whole trip? is there water or food for the animals or do we bring it with us?

Hi Sarah, we paid 15 JD for two donkeys up the Al-Kubtha trail (the viewpoint overlooking The Treasury). The camels don’t go up steps so I think you’d just ride those down on the main paths. Assuming they’re a similar price! You don’t need to worry about food or water for the animals as far as I know their owners take care of everything. I was a little unsure of their welfare generally, and if you have time/energy I’d suggest walking the routes. We were in a hurry to get to the viewpoint so took a donkey but I wasn’t sure about it all! Have an amazing time though, Petra is incredible!

Unless you cannot walk, don’t even consider the ‘free’ ride to the Treasury – it was much slower than walking and then we were hassled to book a return time, which limited us. But we had a great day!

Best guide I’ve read on Petra so far, and I’ve read many. Only missing the visa info, but this was so good, its ok 😉

Beautiful sights!

So, you can just walk right up to the visitor center and buy a ticket to get in?

Hey Tim – yep buy them on the day if you want!

The culture of Jordan is quite interesting to learn and explore. This is the type of place that i love to travel with. Keep us updated.

Thank you for such informative blog. It is really very useful… Hope to have a grt time at Petra in October.

Thanks so much! I hope you have a wonderful time!

Very informative. We plan to travel end December. Wondering if two days would be sufficient as days are quite short and one has to get out by 5 pm. What would be timings for the night visit?

Hi Nalin, thanks for your comment. Glad you found the post useful. I can’t find the timings for Petra by night in Dec sadly. I think it’d be enough time though. We only had a day there and rushed to see everything – 2 would have been perfect! Have an amazing time!

Thank you for your great info. Off to Jordan very soon and although easy to get info about most things, everyone else has not mentioned toilets in Petra. Was getting a badge concerned! Now able to go with an easy mind. Thanks so much.

Haha it’s the little things like that which are the difference between whether it’s a comfy and relaxed day or not! Have a wonderful time – it’s SUCH a special place!

As for tickets, you really should mention the Jordan Pass – or did I miss that somewhere? It’s just 70 JD for one day, or 75 for 2 days, it also covers the 40JD visa fee on arrival, and it allows you into dozens of other sites around the country for free (I used it today at the Citadel and Roman amphitheatre in Amman, for example). So it’s a major savings off the ticket price at Petra as long as you purchase it online before you arrive in Jordan. Thanks for the other info!

Great highlights and tips! Thanks for sharing about your experience and tips to seeing Jordan! It’s a magical place.

Thanks for your informative blog on Petra

– ? love from India

What do you recommend doing in Jordan other than Petra. We have three full days. Thanks.

I really enjoyed Amman and Jerash. I didn’t make it to the Dead Sea or to Wadi Rum, but they’d be on my list for next time!

Mo was an excellent tour leader in that he has such passion and enthusiasm about Jordan. I learnt so much about the history and culture and so enjoyed all of the activities. Mo went over and beyond to ensure my dietary needs were met as I have coeliac disease which was much appreciated. Highly recommend this tour.

Excellent tour. Effectively a provide tour for me and my wife. Our driver, Mahmood was brilliant - arrived on time every day - he took us off the beaten track to show us some more of the 'real' Jordan that was not on the itinerary. I would recommend the tour to anyone.

What people love about petra solo tours.

My wife and I previously used Encounters Travel for a vacation to Egypt and Greece and therefore jumped at the opportunity to use them for our journey to Jordan. The expectations bar was high given our previous trips being absolutely amazing and something we wanted to replicate in many areas. It delivered from the encyclopedic knowledge of our guide, Omar, who explained the historical significance of various sites encompassing the folklore of the civilizations responsible for such wonders such as the temples, amphitheaters around Amman, As-Salt, Jerash, and all the way to the remoteness of Wadi Rum plus who could forget the marvels of Petra with its Hellenistic design. The highlights were many with floating on the waters of the Dead Sea being magical. The accommodations were mentioned as being "3 Star" which was a standard room wasn't an issue as who is trying to stay in their room with everything there is to explore in Jordan. One improvement or thing to note is the preservation of water in Jordan might mean if you're taking a shower at a particular hour expect it to be freezing cold. During the trip, we were provided bottled water; however, the water was never cold. It would have been nice if the refrigerated unit used to hold the water on the coach bus worked and would keep the water cold. The expectations for the culinary choices were something my wife and I got particularly thrilled with offerings such as Makloubeh, yet nothing could beat the desert item called Kanafeh that was scrumptious and if you're into Baklava, there is no shortage of places to purchase. Encounters Travel gets both thumbs up for the trips and locations they put together and we will definitely use them for future travel adventures.
Great tour to have a quick experience of Jordan, if you get Hisham as your guide your will be very lucky, He is very knowledgeable, well organized, very motivated, and hardworking & show you all the hidden gems. I have travelled a lot with so many tour groups but intrepid you are my new favourite! Would suggest putting more time into Petra as we do not get to experience it completely.

Petra from Israel Tours

Petra from Israel Tours – the best way to explore Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Renowned for its charm and ancient cultural heritage, Petra marks the achievement of an impressive civilization, the Nabataean Arabs, who perfectly carved the city into its mountains.

Described by UNESCO as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage”, there is a lot to see and discover in Petra. Let’s take a look at what there is to explore.

Main Sights in Petra

The main road that leads to the city, this rock canal starts from the Dam and ends at the Treasury. The main part of the Siq is created by natural rock formation and the rest is carved by the Nabataeans.

Obelisk Tomb

This burial complex is unique in the Nabataean architecture and was c arved in the 1st century AD . It has four pointed pillars that probably represent those buried in the four side graves of the inner chamber. This site gives a better look at what life used to be like.

The Treasury

Completely carved out of the sandstone mountains, the Treasury is one of the most elaborate temples in Petra. This was built as a tomb for the Nabataean King Aretas III. Many visitors come to Petra just for this!

Jebel Madbah Mountain – The High Place of Sacrifice

As its name suggests, this place was mainly used for the sacrifice of animals to the Nabatean God Dushara.  At 170 meters high, this mountain will give you spectacular views of the ancient city of Petra as well as an important insight into its history.

Petra Theater

A first century AD Nabataean theater, mostly carved out of solid rock, able to seat over 8,000 spectators during its heyday. This structure was used for music contests, performances and religious rituals.

Our Guided Tour Options

It can be challenging to get to all the must-see sights when you’re a new visitor. We offer wonderful options for guided Petra tours from Israel, but to fully experience Petra, we recommend our 3-day Tour to Petra and Wadi Rum . Frequently asked questions.

Here at Egged Tours, we provide tours of Petra from Israel – either from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, or Eilat. Choose from a large variety of 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day tours of Petra. On our longer tours, you also get to explore Wadi Rum and Aqaba.

We provide a large selection of half-day, single day and multiple day guided tours. Major destinations include Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, Masada tours , Galilee, and the Golan Heights. We also offer guided tours to Petra from Israel. If you prefer to combine several destinations, we also offer Israel tour packages for your convenience.

The best time to visit Petra is in the spring and autumn. March through May or September through November are all great months to visit because it isn’t too hot.

Yes! Our Petra Tour from Jerusalem gives you the chance to explore the sensational city of Petra with a qualified and licensed tour guide – all in one day.

Although you could stay forever in Petra without seeing it all, 3 days should be enough to see most of the main sites and even see Wadi Rum and Aqaba, too. And you will always have the chance to see much more the next time you visit!

Guided Petra tours from Israel enhance your trip in so many ways:

  • They know a lot : Tour guides in Israel are required to have a license from the Ministry of Tourism and must renew it every two years. This means that you are sure to learn from a tour guide who is informed and knowledgeable. There are countless details and historical facts you will miss without the experience of a tour.
  • They take care of all the planning: Tour guides plan all the logistics and details of a trip you might not have even thought about. They take care of all the hassle, from checking operating hours and booking tickets to handling any problems that might arise.
  • They know the best routes: There is a lot to see and only so much time. Tour guides will plan the trip in the way that makes the most logical sense. Instead of taking circular routes to see all the sites you want to see (and then being disappointed when you miss something), tour guides make sure you see all the places that matter most to you.
