The Expert Vagabond

As stated on his site, the definition of a vagabond is “wandering from place to place without any settled home; nomadic” and this perfectly sums up Karsten’s life. At the age of 29 Matthew quit his job, sold his possessions and headed out on the road. Karsten has traveled across the globe for five years while travel blogging to share his adventures with the world and he doesn’t have any plans to slow down. The Expert Vagabond is living proof that it is possible to live an adventurous life and follow your dreams.

Alison’s Adventures is one of the best adventure travel blogs on the web.

3.  Alastair Humphreys

Alastair Humphreys

Visit Alastair’s Blog by click HERE or follow the link below:

https://alastairhumphreys.com/blog/

This British adventurer who coined the term ‘micro adventure’ advocates that people don’t need to go across the world to find adventure, but can actually find it closer to home. Although Humphreys has written a best selling book on micro adventures which you can check out HERE , this doesn’t stop him from continuously testing the boundaries of global exploration. Nominated as a National Geographic Adventurer in 2012, Humphreys has crossed Iceland by foot and pack raft, rowed across the Atlantic ocean, and cycled round the world for four years. This adventure travel blog is a must for anyone who loves to explore!

4.  Andrew Skurka

Andrew Skurka

Visit Andrew’s Blog by click HERE or follow the link below:

https://andrewskurka.com/blog/

Described by National Geographic as “one of the best traveled and fastest hikers on the planet” , Andrew Skurka has made a name for himself by hiking super human distances across rugged terrain. One example is his 7,775-mile, eleven month sea-to-sea route expedition. The sea-to-sea route connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the United States.

Being awarded the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2007, Skurka has perfected the art of moving fast and lightly through the mountains, and has actually published a gear guide on the subject titled “The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide: Tools & Techniques to Hit the Trail” which you can find HERE .

5.  Eric Larsen Explore – Eric Larsen

Eric Larsen

Visit Eric’s Blog by click HERE or follow the link below:

http://www.ericlarsenexplore.com/updates

The best way to describe explorer Eric Larsen is that he LOVES the cold. The seasoned polar explorer has skied to both the North and South Pole, and after summiting Mount Everest in October of 2010 Eric became the first person to reach the three poles in a 365 day period. He also uses his expeditions as a platform to create awareness on the effects of climate change on the earth.

I first saw Eric speak in 2014 at the REI Adventure Store in New York City and have been following this polar explorers’ adventures ever since.

The top sites that made this list are ranked according to Alexa (33.3%), Domain Authority (33.3%), Page Authority (33.3%) indicators. The list doesn't involve our personal opinion in any way.

Adventure Travel

What is adventure travel? Is it limited to long-distance trekking through gorges and mountain ranges, or kayaking down whitewater rivers, camping in rugged outcrops along the way?

Perhaps the idea of jumping out of a plane or bungy jumping gets your heart pumping. Maybe adventure travel can be considered wandering across the globe, seeking out places that few tourists have ever been.

We believe that adventure travel is anything that gets you out of your comfort zone, and makes you feel alive.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be extreme, or life-threatening. Adventure means something different to everyone.

Part of the reason we created this adventure travel blog is to showcase our love and passion for pushing ourselves to the limit and finding unique places around the world.

Over the years we’ve been lucky enough to have some incredible experiences, some of them might be considered extreme or foolish, while others are more exciting than daring.

We’ve camped with reindeer herders in Mongolia, and taken a cargo ship across the Caspian Sea during a missile strike. We have fended off pirates off the coast of Honduras, and ridden mountain bikes down Death Road in Bolivia.

That doesn’t mean that the answer to the question ‘What is adventure travel?’ has to involve death-defying activities though.

Some of our best adventures have had nothing to do with scaring ourselves. A month backpacking independently around Iran with no plans, no itinerary and no guide didn’t see us getting our heart rate very high, but it was still an incredible experience that we always consider a fun adventure.

And that’s the beauty of adventure. It can be anything you want it to be.

Not everything we’ve done has made it onto the adventure blog (we’re working on getting them all up there!), but a lot of our favourite ones can be found in the archives of this website.

There are no limits to what you can and can’t do on the road. Life’s too short to live in a bubble. Step out of your comfort zone.

So what adventures have we done over the years that have stood out to us?

  • Travelled overland from Thailand to Turkey over two years without taking a single flight.
  • Explored Hang Son Doong (the world’s largest cave) on a 6-day expedition.
  • Rode more than 15’000km on two motorbikes around Southeast Asia.
  • Sailed on a small catamaran in the Caribbean for two months, where we scared off pirates with our air rifles (true story) and went through the ‘perfect storm’ more than 150 nautical miles out to sea.
  • Horse trekked to visit the Tsaatan reindeer herders in Northern Mongolia.
  • Travelled to Antarctica and South Georgia on some Russian research vessels.
  • Survived the “World’s Most Dangerous Hike” on Mount Huashan, China.
  • We are both qualified rescue divers with wreck and nitrox certifications.
  • Mountain biked down ‘Death Road’ in Bolivia.

Hi! I’m Kate.

I teach women how to travel the world safely — and I’m here to help you have the best trip ever.

I quit my job to travel the world alone in 2010. 12 years later, I’ve traveled to 83 countries and all seven continents! Oh, and I never went back to a “real” job.

Whether you need guidance for your first solo trip or you’re a seasoned traveler looking for destination inspiration, you’ve come to the right place!

You’re the most genuine blogger I’ve ever read…I’ve consumed a lot of blogs and travel related content in the past decade but you’re the only one I really trust and can genuinely say puts your readers first.

No one tackles the uncomfortable and difficult subjects like Kate does. I feel like she makes me a more aware and ethical traveler. It’s a complete bonus that reading her is like manifesting that wickedly intelligent, hilarious well-traveled friend we would all love to have.

The Best Adventure Travel Blogs Right Now

In the last few years a ton of people started travel blogging – some, to put it nicely, offering more quality content than others. So you don’t have to sort through thousands of adventure travel blogs on Google, we’ve highlighted a few that are genuinely deserving of your attention. Whether you are a hardcore backcountry adrenaline junkie, a cautious city dweller who just tries their best to get out in nature whenever you can, want to World School your kids, or travel the world with your partner and learn how to not be at each other’s throats after two weeks, there’s sure to be an adventure blog here for everyone.

11 Popular Adventure Travel Blogs to Inspire Your Future #TravelGoals

1) the planet d.

The Canadian couple behind The Planet D , Dave and Deb, live by the motto “Adventure is for Everyone.” They don’t believe that you have to be an uber-athlete, adrenaline junkie or ultra-rich to be an adventurer, you just need the desire to achieve something more. They both used to work long hours on feature films and television but left that world to travel to over 115 countries on all 7 continents and become a leading source of detailed city guides, personal travel tips, and inspiring stories. It all started when they signed up in 2008 for the Tour d’Afrique, the world’s longest cycling race, which was an experience that sparked the idea that travel could be a way of life for them, not just a vacation.

The Adventure Junkies

2) The Adventure Junkies

Polished and very wide-reaching in its information, The Adventure Junkies blog wants its readers to “be safe, confident and prepared in the outdoors.” Its mission is to make the outdoors accessible to everyone in order to inspire people to value, understand and protect the planet’s ecosystems. The blog not only promotes quality e-books but also offers digital magazine issues called ReWild and a community platform called Summit where you can interact with other adventure junkies. The content is organized into sections such as “Climb,” “Paddle,” “Snow,” or “Hike,” so you can easily find posts related to your specific outdoor interests.

O. Christine Adventure Travel Blog

3) O. Christine

As a Bronx-born Afro Latina with Lupus, Olivia Christine Perez knows what it feels like to burn out and wish for an escape, or to be unsure of how to start life anew after hardship. Her goal with O. Christine is to remind her readers that they can create a life they love despite their personal circumstances or challenges. She found joy and whole-body wellness in travel and believes that everyone deserves to explore, relax, connect with the outdoors, and live well.

The Best Adventure Travel Blogs Right Now

4) Off Yonder

It’s been heartwarming to see Cameron Martindell morph over the past few years from hardcore adventurer and gear-reviewer to inspiring family travel guy. His passion for and connection to the natural world is conveyed in a very authentic way, and even though he has experienced some of the most epic adventures on earth, he never comes across as pretentious about it. His blog, Off Yonder , is set up cleanly, organized first by continent and then with sections like “Earth,” “Snow,” “Water,” and “Air.” For those of you with kids whose idea of a fun family vacation is backcountry camping, whitewater rafting , climbing, or skiing with your kiddos as opposed to a week at Disneyland, this is a must-read blog.

McCool Travel Blog

5) McCool Travel

When your actual last name is McCool, you better live up to the hype. He does. Charles is like a mix between fun, dorky dad and crazy uncle who has seen and done it all. His specialty is U.S. road trips and the Gulf Coast, although his blog, McCool Travel , includes international content as well. His main goal is to show travelers how to increase travel happiness and reduce stress on every trip. What’s to love about his blog is that he is very down-to-earth and brutally honest. He tells it like it is without sugar coating anything, so when he is excited about something you can trust that it’s not just because he is being sponsored by someone.

The Best Adventure Travels Blogs Right Now | Outdoorsy Diva

6) Outdoorsy Diva

Lauren Gay is the Outdoorsy Diva and she wants to knock down stereotypes that POC don’t go hiking, fishing, paddling, camping or skydiving. She’s a mom who lives in Florida and following her blog makes you realize that there is no excuse – gender, color of skin, kids – that should stop you from fully diving into outdoor adventure. She also is quite the foodie and her Instagram feed is where she shares must-try foods from around the globe.

Nomadic Boys Travel Blog

7) Nomadic Boys

This is one of the most highly-respected and prominent blogs inspiring gay travelers to safely get out into the world and adventure. Stefan and Sebastien, the couple behind Nomadic Boys , quit their jobs in 2014 and have been traveling the globe together since. Their mission is to show gay travelers that they can openly visit more countries than they may have thought possible, and through their own first-hand accounts they help their readers plan a safe trip no matter how they personally identify. While they have a heavy focus on culinary trips, they do devote a section of their blog to adventure travel.

Adventure Travel Blogs Worth Reading

8) Good Nature Travel

Good Nature Travel is the blog behind Natural Habitat Adventures, the world’s first 100-percent carbon-neutral travel company that focuses on seeing the world’s most incredible natural places with minimal impact. NatHab is also the official conservation travel partner of the World Wildlife Fund. Their overall informational and trustworthy blog is jam-packed with the latest conservation news from around the world, eco-conscious travel trips, fascinating reads on the natural world, and more. If you care about the fate of the planet and love learning, this blog is for you.

10) Adventure in You

Tom and Anna make you wish you were real life friends with them, instead of making you cringe like a number of self-absorbed blogger couples out there. They met years ago while backpacking and have since traveled the world together. What could have easily turned into “check out our amazingly Instagrammable life and be super jealous of us!” content has instead been lovingly crafted into a humble, inspiring blog that transparently shows the realities of being a travel blogger. The Adventure in You blog is largely focused on genuinely helping the reader achieve their travel dreams instead of Tom and Anna just shoving their own adventures down your throat.

Rory Moulton Travel Blog

11) Rory Moulton

Rory has 20 years of experience as a travel, news and business journalist and has founded/co-founded several travel media companies. He has led hiking, kayaking, surfing and climbing trips around the world as an adventure tour guide, but his biggest adventure yet was taking off from his Colorado home with his wife and son to dive deep into traveling Europe. His blog focuses hard on experiential, not checklist, travel. Forget the tourist traps – Rory Moulton will show you how to have a much more authentic, memorable time in Europe no matter what your budget is. He has self-published six books, maintains a newsletter that you will actually look forward to every month, and even offers private travel consultation.

travel blog for backpackers, Adventurers and outdoor lovers

Hi, I’m Cynthia Bil, a Belgian adventurer and travel photographer who has lived nomadically since 2011. Instead of bouncing from country to country, I prefer to travel slowly and get to know the places I visit. It took me 3 years to hitchhike from Ireland to Central Asia; I guess that says enough about my travel pace…

Journal of Nomads is my Adventure Travel Blog for independent backpackers and adventurous travelers interested in culture, nature, and  off-the-beaten-path regions such as Central Asia and the Caucasus. I also share my knowledge and experiences on traveling long-term and becoming location independent . If you’re searching for handy guides and practical advice, you’re in the right place!

Booking self-guided travel with Macs Adventure offers you flexibility, ease, and adventure.

We might be biased, but self-guided travel is one of the best ways to experience the world. It’s active travel, led by you. It’s all the best bits of adventuring on your own plus support from a professional team that handles all of your logistics and knows all the local secrets.

If you’ve never tried a self-guided hiking or self-guided biking trip, here’s what you need to know about how it works, and who it’s best for.

Two women walking on the Tour Du Mont Blanc

How Does Self-guided Travel Work?

On a guided trip, you’d join a group for a set itinerary, led by someone else who sets your departure times, detours, lunch breaks, and pace. On a self-guided walking or cycling tour, however, we’ll plan your adventure and then you’ll take the lead for a self-paced, individualized journey.

We handle all the logistics, from booking unique, hand-picked accommodations with inns, bed & breakfasts, or hotels to transferring your luggage between them, so you only need a daypack for hiking or biking. Our app has maps with detailed information about points of interest between your start and end points each day, so you won’t miss any of the scenic or historic detours that elevate your experience.

All you have to do is select which trip you’d like to go on, and we’ll handle the rest.

Why Choose Self-guided?

The biggest benefits of booking self-directed adventure are:

A unique, tried-and-tested journey that’s completely your own

Choice and flexibility to travel at your own pace

Expert recommendations

We’ve been planning self-guided hiking and biking tours for decades, and we’ve developed hand-crafted adventures in places we know well. Our app offers local insights and accurate, easy navigation for each route, and our network of partners is tried and true. We know many of the best places to stay along every trail we serve, and most of these places are small, family-owned businesses that don’t work with online booking platforms. That means we can save you hours—if not days—of research by booking all your accommodations for you, which gives you more time to train for your trip and enjoy when you get there.

We’re also doing our best to help you travel more responsibly. We prioritize working with local businesses that operate with the environment in mind. You can check out our inaugural impact report  as we pursue B Corp certification.

Many of our partners have been hosting Macs adventurers for years, which helps us ensure you have a quality stay with hosts who understand the small details of what an active traveler needs. You’ll generally find it easy to arrange a packed lunch, for example, and we make sure your stay comes with a hearty breakfast to fuel your day on the trail.

If something doesn’t quite go to plan, you’ve got someone looking out for you on the ground. Our partners know to call us if you haven’t checked in by a certain time, so we’ll be proactively looking out for you — great peace of mind. And if you ever need us, we’re just a phone call away.

Who Should Do Self-guided Travel?

Self-guided travel is great for almost everyone. At Macs, we serve walkers, hikers, and bikers who are active and independent travelers. Here are a few types of people especially well-suited to our trips:

  • Couples who love hiking or biking: Traveling in a pair with a partner or friend is the most economical way to book. You can book a room with one bed, a room with two beds, or separate rooms entirely. Whether you’re looking to hike , bike , or take a self-led road trip, we’ll handle all the logistics for both of you so you can focus on prepping for the adventure.
  • Small groups: If you’re traveling with a few friends or family members, having help with booking and planning can go a long way. With a self-guided tour booked by Macs, you can outsource all the decision-making to us, and each individual or couple can book and pay separately so that one person doesn’t have to carry all the deposits for hotels.
  • Solo travelers : Whether you’re a seasoned pro or traveling alone for the first time, booking through Macs gives you peace of mind that you’ll be staying in comfortable, safe places, and that someone is looking out for you. If you don’t arrive at your accommodation by the expected time, our partners will contact us so we can make sure you’re alright.

What Type of Self-Guided Trips Can I Do?

At Macs, we focus on walking, hiking, and biking from town to town, self-drive road trips to hike in gorgeous places, and rail and hike trips so you can cover more ground on public transportation.

Our trip types include:

Classic Routes : From Ireland’s Dingle Way to the Mountains & Lakes of Slovenia’s Julian Alps , our classic routes highlight some of the world’s most beloved journeys.

Slower Adventures : Our Slower Adventures maximize your time to explore. You’ll enjoy shorter distances each day, so you have more free time to visit museums, vineyards, cafes, or even learn how to make cheese in a Swiss Alpine village.

Pilgrimages : Across the world, pilgrimages are often rooted in ancient tradition, and offer incredible opportunities for growth, relaxation, and meeting other travelers. These trips are some of our longest, ranging from a few days to nearly two months. Our routes include the ever-popular Camino de Santiago  in Spain and the lesser-known (and underrated) Via Francigena , which winds through Europe from France to the Swiss Alps to Rome.

In-Style : If you’re looking for something truly special, In-Style trips are built to impress. We’ve scouted the most stylish boutique hotels , Italian agriturismos , French chateaux , grand English estates , eco beach retreats, and other unique accommodations across the world. These trips may include extras such as dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant.

Discovery : Our Discovery trips give you freedom to cover more ground with easy to moderate walking, such as taking two weeks to drive the entire coast of Iceland . You can choose between Drive & Hike , Rail & Hike tours , or Self Drive road trips , all of which come with suggestions for gorgeous trails, scenic detours, and personal recommendations for how to spend your days. And of course, we’ll handle all your accommodations.

Start Your Self-Guided Journey Today
