  • Post category: Cruise Ship Jobs / Positions

The bartender is one of the friendliest faces that some guests will see when they are on a cruise ship. They are qualified individuals that do much more than simply pop open a fresh beer or pour some wine. The job of a cruise ship bartender requires that you are friendly, knowledgeable, and not afraid to work hard. You will be spending the majority of your time on your feet moving around the bar constantly.

When you are prepared for your interview and know what to expect from the position of a cruise ship bartender, you will be much more likely to earn this coveted position. Keep reading to learn more about this job and how you can put your best foot forward during your interview.

What’s the Job of Bartender on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise Ship Bartender Jobs

Bartenders do much more than simply provide guests with drinks when they are on the ship. You must also know how to manage the bar to ensure that it is performing to the high standards set by the cruise line. This means that in addition to making and serving drinks, you must understand all of the various aspects of beverage service and ensure that they are being carried out correctly.

Sales Techniques

You must understand sales techniques that you can use when interacting with guests and be comfortable with both suggestive selling as well as upselling. Additionally, great bartenders must know how to control inventory, keep the bar clean, understand resupplying, and handle any bar staff problems that may arise.

Cruise Lines will often have a Drink of the Day and you must know how to make it and sell it to the guests, while not forgetting to upsell.

Bar Management Skills

Bartenders are in charge of the bar and must make sure to train the bar staff to keep the place neat, organized, and stocked. Bartenders are responsible for planning and taking deliveries of any and all supplies that the bar will need and are in charge of helping meet any budget targets.

Since bartenders need to be able to manage employees, balance time, and understand budgets, these are all skills that you will want to address with your potential employer. Preparing for the interview by having in mind examples of when you have successfully done these things will help to set you apart.

Do You Know Bartending Flare Techniques?

Besides the regular job of a bartender, there’s also the fun part of it, called flair bartending. Being a flair bartender can make the job much more fun. Although cruise lines have different position for flair bartenders, if you know or have your own techniques, it could mean the difference between getting a job or not on a cruise ship.

What Are the Job Requirements of a Cruise Ship Bartender?

Cruise-Ship-Bartender-Job-Requirements

Even though it may seem easy to get a job as a bartender in a local town bar, working on a cruise ship will require more from you, so you must be prepared for the higher quality of work that you will perform and the higher expectations that you must meet. Bartenders need to have a high school diploma or GED at the minimum, although a college degree is always helpful. Since math is so important on a day to day basis when working at a bar, you must have strong math skills such as calculating interest, commissions, tips, and even percentages that must be done correctly and quickly.

Additional Languages Can Help.

Language-Requirements-Cruise-Ship

Bartenders who speak more than one language are clearly going to be a more attractive choice for cruise ships as they will be able to better interact with more guests. This is not a necessity for all cruise ships but is a great way for you to set yourself apart in addition to meeting the other qualifications. There’s a variety of different languages spoken and cruise ships are in all corners of the world. If you speak Spanish, chances are that cruise lines will place you on a route that attracts a lot of Spanish-speaking guests, like cruises sailing out of Barcelona. If you speak Portuguese, you might work on the Brazilian season, if your company has cruises going to Brazil.

Can I get a Bartending Job with no Experience?

Bartender-Job-No-Experience-Cruise-SHip

You would most likely not be hired for a job as a bartender on a cruise ship without previous experiences working as a bartender. Not only do you need to have at least two to three years experience working in the beverage industry as a bartender but you must also have strong communication abilities. Cruise ship bartenders are constantly interacting with the guests and you must make sure that you make them feel comfortable and happy when at the bar.

How Much Is the Salary of a Bartender on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise Ship Salaries

Qualified applicants and ones who are able to get a position on a larger ship are likely going to make more. In general, however, bartenders can expect to make between $1500 and $2800 a month, inclusive of tips.

Bar managers who handle all of the ordering, budgeting, and scheduling will expect to make a bit more. These bartenders can easily bring home up to $3800 a month , depending on what cruise line they choose to work for.

Tips on How to Prepare for the Interview

One of the things that a cruise line is looking for when hiring bartenders is good judgment and the ability to discern when a guest has had enough to drink. Being able to communicate with guests is key and understanding how to use good judgment when serving clients will keep guests happy and safe.

Bartenders also need to be able to multitask in order to be successful on a large cruise ship. It’s a good idea for you to have in mind a few examples of past multitasking that you can talk about as this is a great way to show the cruise line director that you are able to work on many things at once without getting frustrated.

Bar staff serve non-alcoholic beverages as well, so while working it is important to keep all cruise ship clientele in mind.

What It’s Like to Be a Bartender on the World’s Largest Cruise Ship

words: Tiffany Leigh

illustration: Pedro Nekoi

Being a bartender on land is already no easy feat. So when you’re manning a bar (or several of them) on the high seas, it can be a sink-or-swim scenario: Supplies are limited, quarters are tight, and many guests can begin imbibing from the moment they wake up, especially if they signed up for an unlimited, all-inclusive drinks package. Those factors hold extra weight on the world’s newest and largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s (RC) Icon of the Seas , whose inaugural sail took place in January 2024.

Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas set sail for the first time in January 2024. Here's what it's like to be a bartender on board.

Fortunately, the ship’s team threw bar staff a life raft through solid prep work before the ship left the harbor. Award-winning mixology leaders Tony Abou-Ganim and Kim Haasarud collaborated with RC beverage director Ed Eiswirth and RC beverage and training manager Alexandra Palmeri to envision the look and taste of over 100 new drink recipes for guests to enjoy on the mega ship, with additional bells and whistles that include eight elaborately themed “neighborhoods,” six record-breaking waterslides, the world’s largest ice rink on a floating vessel, a 55-foot waterfall complete with olympic diver shows, and 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges — all to entertain 5,610 cruisers.

“It was a three-year process to refine the vision of each of the new bars and restaurants on board, not including the existing 25 on site that needed finessing,” says Eiswirth. “We wanted to make sure that every spot had its own unique personality and respective drinks to align with the ambiance and entertainment offered.” That includes Abou-Ganim’s self-proclaimed baby: 1400 , the ship’s lobby bar on deck 6, which offers a mesmerizing signature cocktail that uses housemade shimmer pearl syrup (named after the $11 million dollar circular art structure on the same deck) complete with a citrus smoke bubble.

So after countless tweaks, tastings, and finalizing menus, what does it all mean for the crew who actually make all these drinks day-to-day? We asked lead bartender Monica Hernandez, who has been with RC for 13 years, to shed some light on the process and its challenges.

The Learning Curve

Before even setting foot on the ship, Hernandez says the entire bartending team headed to Spain for an intense, two-week cocktail bootcamp to prepare them for slinging drinks at sea.

“Each day was  nine hours long, and it was basically like going back to school,” Hernandez adds. They were given walk-throughs of the new venues, the ones they would specifically manage on-site, and the technicalities of the drinks they would be creating. Hernandez oversees the Central Park neighborhood of the ship on deck 8, which includes Izumi Hibachi & Sushi (a Japanese fare and sake spot), Bubbles (a Champagne bar), Lou’s Jazz ’N Blues Bar (a New Orleans-inspired jazz club), Park Cafe (a grab-and-go deli), T rellis Bar (Amalfi Coast vibes), and Chops Grille (an American steakhouse). These new cocktail recipes her team had to learn would be in addition to the existing working knowledge of the usual suspects they’d make on the fly like Chocolate Mudslides , Strawberry Margaritas , Daiquiris , Mojitos , and those infamous Piña Coladas .

Limited Ingredients

On land, bartenders can be more spontaneous, more easily devise seasonal drinks menus, and tinker with ingredients as needed — but not on a moving ship. Instead of mile-long ingredient lists that are useful at typical bars, the ship’s drinks offer elevated flavors with no more than seven ingredients per cocktail. Additionally, to handle the sheer volume of orders, Hernandez says that certain specialty ingredients (such as the aforementioned shimmer syrup from 1400) are already made pre-service to ensure swift service and a consistent final product. That’s why Hernandez says it’s so important to adhere to the guidelines of making each drink as the recipe calls for, as well as to ensure quality control and consistency.

The 1400 Cocktail on the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas.

Hernandez adds that while she hasn’t experienced “drinks fatigue” from making the same cocktails repeatedly, she says that it would be interesting to see what other neighborhoods are like.

“It would be nice to trade places with a manager in one of the other zones, but for sanity’s sake, it’s probably for the best that we are organized this way,” she says. “We are so busy here already that I often lose track of the time, not realizing that the sun has already set.”

Little Down Time

“Getting to travel on a floating city and seeing the world is my dream job but definitely a gig that is not for everyone,” Hernandez says, citing long and erratic hours spent bouncing between graveyard and early-riser shifts and extended periods away from home and family. “I think the transition and learning curve for me and my team wasn’t as tough simply because I know what to expect now, but for newbies, it can be difficult.”

She adds that for new hires, the litmus test is their first sailing, which is a minimum of three months and up to eight months of consecutive sailing. “If you can survive your first contract, then you can likely brave whatever else upper management sends your way,” she says.

Controlled Chaos

“It’s all about creating key moments of relaxation and joy for them. If they sense you’re stressed, it will negatively impact their vacation.”

Hernandez says that, on average, her team makes 300 to 400 drinks daily in one venue alone. If the drink hasn’t been made well in 36 seconds to a minute, they’re already behind. While an unlimited drinks package is a dream for many vacationers, it can be a chaotic challenge for the crew when said guests don’t know their limit. “It comes with the territory … and I get it, your guard is down and you just want to relax,” Hernandez says. “In the case that a guest is unruly, loud, or disruptive, the best way to handle such situations is with grace.” She says in these moments it’s important not to embarrass and shame, but instead to exercise patience, empathy, and compassion.

Guests Relations

For better or worse, with the responsibilities of caring for over 5,000 guests on board, Hernandez says your work life becomes your personal life.

The Lobby Bar on the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas.

“To put it frankly, there isn’t a true break like you’re probably thinking of,” Hernandez explains. “We live under stress all the time. The lines between you and your working self are blurred, simply because once I’m done with a shift, it’s not as though I can leave my place of work.”

Ultimately, even if staff are feeling under the pressure, she says that it should never be felt by the guests on board. “They are our priority, especially when it comes to providing a hospitable experience and serving their beverages,” she says. “It’s all about creating key moments of relaxation and joy for them. If they sense you’re stressed, it will negatively impact their vacation.” She explains that if you don’t cultivate a high level of emotional intelligence to handle it all, the tension can trickle down into the drinks, or you can internalize a bar guest’s interaction with you and perceive it as negative.

Meeting Demand

Hernandez says that though it may be surprising, bartending and making the drinks is actually the easiest part of the gig. In fact, she says that her role frequently goes above and beyond making drinks. There are loyalty cruisers here who spend weeks on board and seek out Hernandez or her team for companionship, guidance, or simply a friendly face to connect with.

“This job requires you to also be a life coach, friend, psychologist, and everything else in between,” she says. “Where else can you build relationships, meet fascinating people from all over the world, and listen to the adventures they’ve had and want to share with you — all over a round of delicious cocktails?”

Robot Bartenders Shake Things Up At Sea

Behind the scenes of the most advanced cruise ship bars..

Ever pioneering, Royal Caribbean has made itself stand out in the travel industry with its continual innovation: the mind-bending Ultimate Abyss, the world’s tallest slide at sea ; onboard sky-diving and surf simulators ; and by employing the world’s first robotic bartenders.

First unveiled on Quantum of the Seas in 2014, a lineup of ships now feature the popular Bionic Bar, including Odyssey and Wonder of the Seas . Manning the bar are two robots; each one has its own name. (For example: On Anthem, they’re called “Shaken” and “Stirred,” and “Mix” and “Mingle” are on Harmony.) Engineered in Italy, these special robots can muddle, stir, shake and strain all types of drinks; the cocktail combinations are endless, with 30 spirits and 21 mixers to choose from.

The robot bartenders can mix two drinks per minute and make up to 1,000 each day. Guests create an order—whether a custom request or standard menu item—on a specially programmed tablet or with staff. They can keep track of their order on the digital screen next to the bar, and once it’s ready, the bartenders will release their drink with a simple tap of their SeaPass card or WOWband.

Created by Makr Shakr, an Italian robotics company based in Turin, the technology is so complex the bartenders can’t be deployed just anywhere. The system has three components: the robots, the core of the show that everyone can see; the application that drives them; and the aesthetics.

Beyond designing machines that could mix drinks with precision, Makr Shakr wanted grace and harmony to play a central role in how they moved. The company collaborated with famous dancer Marco Pelle, a principal dancer at the New York Theater Ballet, by mapping his movements with a computer, then simulating them so that the robots make human-like movements.

“There’s always a very particular dynamic in which people interact with the system,” says Alessandro Incisa, project manager for Makr Shakr. “And you always have this kind of magical experience when the guest arrives and says, ‘Oh, look at that, there’s a robot on the counter—and it makes drinks!’”

Public Speaking/ Guest introduction

Before approaching your guest you should have an idea in your mind of what you want to say, and it should be: Short, Polite and Formal.

You must have confidence, stand up straight, speak slowly, with a clear voice, get the people attention, and try not to interrupt; always excuse yourself when approaching.

Your introduction speech should include the following information:

Your name and nationality

Your position, Duties and responsibilities.

Example: Good morning Sir, I am …….from Croatia, I am you’re Bar waitress and I’m gonna take care of your drinks, have fun!

TIP 1: You may use this introduction at dinning room, in casino and bars be short, formal and polite.

Standards of hygiene of the Bar

To wash the hands: All must wash their hands, every time they enter in the galley. The hands must be washed with hot water for about 20 seconds, dry the hands with paper. In case that the USPH catches, this penalty (not to wash the hands) is 5 points.

Do not smoke, do not drink and do not eat in the part where the Garnish and drinks are prepared.

Be aware of how to use the three bucket system, this facilitates the general clean.

The use of gloves, when requested, only if it has contact with the garnish that is ready to be served.

Sales techniques

To up your sales, the most important thing is have knowledge of all bar menu. Sell by suggesting, suggest premium brands, bucket of beer.

1-use open-ended questions, as this questions requires an answer

Of more than just yes or no, like:

How many cocktails?

Which of our imported beers would you like to try?

What may I bring you from the bar?

Avoid closed-ended questions, like: Do you want a drink?

1-  Be skillful with words and description:

“Sir, any pre-dinner cocktail? I suggest a chilled Martini.”

“Ma’am, a frozen Strawberry Daiquiri is very thirst on this sun”

“Would you like a bucket of domestic or imported beer?”

(Use words such as cold, chilled, thirst quenching, refreshing, frozen)

2-Suggest appropriately. If a guest is celebrating an occasion

Suggest a bottle of champagne.

Is very important to read your guest, the situation, like dinner time, what kind of drink is recommended to take before? Example: Bloody Mary, as when the guest is about to have dinner, they prefer to have cold drinks. And after dinner? Digestive drinks such as liquors, are more appropriate.

3-Do not assume. If the guests do not want a drink at the moment, you can always check back later. Americans are used to wait for the waiter come to them and take the order, is not common for them to call the waiter, and don’t wait until their call!

4-Be attentive. Make you guest feel special; give them your full attention, and always smile.

5-Remove empty glasses and cans. This is a good opportunity for suggesting a refill or repeat order

Taking orders:

Greet the guest

Place the napkin

Present the menu

Assist the guest using the sales techniques

Take the order and be sure of that, if you have any doubt repeat all the order before proceed to the bar counter

Ask for the charge card

Serve the drink to guest from right side, ladies first, if there is a child he must be first.

Present the check for signature and verify the signature

Thank the guest

TIP 2: you must always keep the tables clean; taking away the dirty glasses, clean up spills, and change the ashtray if dirty.

Even if there are no one at your station you must always keep your tables clean, with an open menu, guest will always look for a clean and comfortable place to take a seat.

TIP 3:  To change the ashtray, take a clean one and put on top of the dirty one, leave the dirty one on your tray and replace with the clean one.

If you change the ashtray without anything on top, the ash can go to the drink and even to the passenger.

You should take the order in a logical way, as when you come back to the table and deliver you may not ask “who ordered coke?”

Remembering the guest names

Impression: observe facial characteristics; study the size of the person; listen to their voice.

Repetition: repeat name immediately, use the name several times in conversation.

Association: Mr. Barr = bartender, Mr. Baldwin = Very little hair, mach them with someone you know.

Calling your guest by their names they will be more confident to always order with you, is very important to memorize: their names, card number and drinks, you will make their life easy instead of all the time say what they want, name and card number, specially on Casinos, and pool.

At the pool they are usually dressed with bikinis and without any pocket so every order they need to look for their bag, open up and this takes your time and theirs.

At the casino they are very focused on the game and you can not distract them, so can take the order, like: Mr. Baldwin, may I take your Jim Bean on the rocks now? I have your card and I will be right back. Good Luck!

Table service is a form of service in restaurants, pubs, and bars where food or drinks are served to the customer's table. This is compared with counter service where service is provided at the counter.

Table service is the norm in most restaurants, while for some fast food restaurants counter service is the common form. For pubs and bars, table service is the norm in the United States whereas counter service is the norm in the United Kingdom.

With table service, the customer generally pays just before leaving rather on the delivery of the food or drink.

Good to know and understand

Guests are not dependent on us, we are dependent on them.

Guests are not interruptions of our work. They are the purpose of it.

Guests are doing us a favor; we are not doing them a favor by serving them.

Guests are part of our business. They are not outsiders.

Guests are not cold statistic. They are human beings with feelings and emotions like our own.

A guest is NOT someone to argue or match wits with. The guest may not always be right, but the guest is always the guest.

Guests are people who bring us their needs. It is our job to fulfill those needs.

Guests are deserving of the most courteous and attentive treatment we can give them.

Guests are life-blood of this and every other business. If there were no guests, there would be no business.

John rich reminisces about the ‘destructive, crazy’ things he did and roots for morgan wallen.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

John Rich weighed in on fellow country music star Morgan Wallen’s arrest for allegedly throwing a chair off the sixth story of rooftop bar in Nashville, Tennessee.

Rich, 50, who is one half of the duo Big & Rich with Big Kenny, shared his advice for the embattled 30-year-old “Wasted on You” singer, who was arrested on Sunday night and later charged with three felony counts of reckless endangerment and one count of disorderly conduct.

In a post he shared on X, the “Save A Horse” hitmaker explained that he empathized with Wallen due to his own past struggles with fame.

“Reading about Morgan Wallen this morning, and I can’t help but recall all the destructive, crazy things I did early on in my career,” Rich wrote in a post that he shared on X on Monday.

He continued, “The combo of intense pressure, expectations and over the top success is a dangerous cocktail.”

“Thank God I had great mentors who helped guide me out of that mindset, and I hope Morgan has some people around him who care about him enough to help him find a new approach to life,” Rich added.

Country music singer John Rich

“It takes a lifetime to build what he’s built, and one second to destroy it all. I’m rooting for him to turn it around.”

The Metro Nashville Police Department shared Wallen’s booking photo on social media along with an arrest report stating he was “booked early today on 3 cts of felony reckless endangerment and 1 ct of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for throwing a chair from the rooftop of Chief’s Bar Sun night. The chair landed on Broadway, close to 2 MNPD officers. His bond: $15,250.”

According to the arrest report, authorities were standing in front of Chief’s on Broadway when a chair fell from above, landing just feet away from them, according to WTVF. The Eric Church-backed bar opened its doors for the first time on April 5.

“At 10:53 p.m. Sunday evening Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is cooperating fully with authorities,” Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson, told Fox News Digital.

Church’s spokesperson, who also represents Wallen, told Fox News Digital on Monday that the “Heart on Fire” singer had “no comment” on the arrest.

A photo of Wallen outside the bar with police was published by TMZ. On Tuesday, Fox News Digital obtained footage of the alleged incident that was recorded on EarthCam.

Wallen’s arrest on Sunday was not his first run-in with the law . In 2020, the country crooner was arrested outside another Nashville bar, Kid Rock’s Big [A–] Honky Tonk and Rock ‘n’ Roll Steakhouse, after being thrown out of the establishment.

Following the arrest, Wallen wrote in posts on X, “Hey y’all just wanted to clear the air. I went out downtown last night with a few old friends. After a couple bar stops, we were horse-playing with each other. We didn’t mean any harm, and we want to say sorry to any bar staff or anyone that was affected.”

A follow-up post added, “Thank you to the local authorities for being so professional and doing their job with class. Love y’all.”

Wallen’s alleged chair-throwing incident occurred just days after he kicked off the “One Night at a Time 2024” tour. Wallen is slated to perform in two weeks in Missouri with Bailey Zimmerman, Nate Smith and Lauren Watkins before a headlining gig in the California desert at the Stagecoach festival.

Bar Harbor businesses appeal decision in cruise ship lawsuit

A tender boat approaches alongside the Nieuw Statendum, a 2,666-passenger cruise ship, which anchored in Frenchman's Bay off Bar Harbor.

A group of Bar Harbor business owners are appealing a district court decision allowing the town to limit cruise ship visitors.

Residents approved a petition two years ago to limit the number of cruise ship passengers who can disembark to 1,000 a day.

Eben Salvatore is a member of the Association to Preserve and Protect Local Livelihoods, which sued the town over the ordinance.

"Well, we hope to just get back to a place where we can discuss and decide as a community, what's best for everybody," he said. "This particular action was what was best for a very certain narrow group. It's harmful to so many people."

Town Council Chair Valerie Peacock says the town was not surprised by the appeal, but will defend the court's decision. Rules for the 1,000 person daily limit are in the works.

Cruise worker reveals very strict rule that crew often break with the guests

Cruise worker reveals very strict rule that crew often break with the guests

In some cases, it could even risk their job.

Jess Battison

A cruise worker has revealed the very strict rule that crew often break when it comes to the guests.

While many opt to spend their days living on cruise ships , for others it ties in with working.

Getting to travel the world with free accommodation and food while also getting paid for it is some people’s dreams.

And luckily for those of us loving the world of cruise ship life, crew members are regularly taking to social media to open up about the rules they have to obey and the mistakes passengers make .

But one worker claimed there’s a rule that is often broken by ‘male crew’ members.

A docked cruise ship.

As you might expect, it’s typical on most cruise ships that sex between staff and guests is banned.

Workers can face major punishments if they’re caught doing the deed with passengers and it can even risk their job onboard.

But it seems that some crew makers are happy to bend the rule for a quickie.

One staff member shared a TikTok with text reading: “The one rule is: don’t sleep with the guests. We’re told we have to do what we’re told but surely…”

It then cuts to ‘Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty’ as the user adds: “Every male crew member.”

Another TikToker also confirmed that ‘hooking up with guests’ is not allowed on cruise ships but ‘other people have’ definitely broken that rule.

They added that however there is ‘no rule’ about ‘hooking up’ between staff as they said it’s ‘fair game’ to sleep with other staff.

It seems that some crew makers are happy to bend the rule for a quickie.

Lucy Southerton, a cruise ship worker from Birmingham, previously shared why staff should wait before sleeping with a colleague .

In one video, she said for the first few weeks ‘you’re there to work and people will know if you’re distracted’.

She went on: “You want to be judicious about sleeping with someone within your first few weeks on board because you're going to be working and living with the same people. You don't want to step on anyone's toes you don't want to upset the wrong person.”

Lucy also explained that a lot of cruise ship workers have to share rooms and it’s important to keep a positive relationship - with it being ‘disrespectful’ to bring people back to the cabin for sex.

"Specifically, do not have sex in your cabin when your roommate is there unless it has been agreed beforehand that that's okay. But absolutely under no circumstances can you do that and expect to have a good relationship with your roommate after,” she added.

A Bar Harbor resident who has spearheaded a local citizen effort to greatly reduce local cruise ship visits has gone to court to try to force the town to slash the number that will visit this summer.

Charles Sidman , who in 2022 initiated a successful citizens’ petition to limit cruise ship passengers to 1,000 per day, filed a complaint  Tuesday in Hancock County Superior Court. Sidman is seeking to overturn a town council decision not to fully enforce the 1,000-passenger daily limit until 2025.

Sidman’s court appeal is the latest wrinkle in a years-long skirmish involving residents, local businesses and town officials over the impact cruise ship visits have on Bar Harbor. Local business owners say the visits — which grew from fewer than 20 each year in the late 1980s to more than 150 in 2019 — are an important source of income for the town and for locals, but many residents say the ships cause congestion downtown in the summertime and have an overall harmful impact on the town.

In addition to Sidman’s court appeal, the town is facing an appeal in federal court from a local coalition of businesses that thinks the daily 1,000 passenger limit is too low. The group, called Association to Preserve and Protect Local Livelihoods, said last week that it planned to appeal a federal court decision that upheld the passenger limit.

Sidman and town officials released accusatory statements on Thursday, while the business group released one of its own last week.

The business group said the cruise ship reduction, and the resulting drop of $1.6 million in cruise ship fee revenue for the town, is “a major reason why” some residents are seeing 20 percent increases in their property tax bills.

Town officials said Thursday that over the past two years, since Sidman began his campaign to force the town to drastically reduce local cruise ship visits, the town has incurred more than $300,000 in legal bills.

“It’s unfortunate that, especially in an extremely tight budget year, any individual or group would pursue frivolous litigation over healthy political dialogue,” said Val Peacock, the council chair. “This only serves to divert attention and resources from other important issues while unfairly adding to the tax burden of their friends and neighbors.”

Sidman, who is running this year for a council seat, said the council has “overreached” in its efforts to delay full implementation of the daily passenger limit.

“I believe that our town council has gone rogue and dysfunctional,” Sidman said. “I continue to believe that the majority of our citizens are smarter than the misinformers [on the council] claim, and can understand and will uphold what is at stake.”

The debate over local cruise ship traffic came to a head after more than half of respondents to a town survey  said in the summer of 2021 that the volume of cruise ship visits was hurting the town. Town officials then came up with a plan, supported by local businesses, that would have set daily limits of 3,500 or 3,800 passengers, along with higher monthly limits, that varied with the time of year.

The November 2022 citizens’ referendum  spearheaded by Sidman circumvented that plan.

The business group, which in January 2023  filed a federal suit against the town over the daily 1,000-passenger limit, argued that it violated federal maritime law and parts of the U.S. Constitution, and that it would hurt their businesses.

But in February, Judge Lance Walker ruled that the voter-approved limit is legal  because it does not discriminate against out-of-state interests in favor of local businesses, which federal law seeks to prevent.

Last month, after the federal court ruling, the town council said it would not ban all ships with more than 1,000 passengers this summer because some of those ships made their reservations before the November 2022 referendum. Ships with large passenger capacities that made reservations after the referendum, despite being informed of the vote results, will have their reservations canceled.

“It is the position of this council that this is the fairest and most legally responsible approach, based upon careful consideration of costs and risks associated with enforcement,” the council said. “Canceling the bulk of the 2024 season now would be fundamentally unfair, would potentially expose the town to additional legal liabilities, and would have a drastic fiscal impact on an already strained and nearly complete municipal budget.”

MIAMI – U.S. Coast Guard crews from Miami are aiding in the search for a man who went overboard from a South Florida-based cruise ship Thursday morning.

It happened on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, which, according to CruiseMapper , was on a four-day roundtrip voyage from Port Everglades.
