How to get around Barbados without breaking a sweat

Hailing a taxi may be an easier way to travel around the island, but nothing provides a peek into Bajan culture quite like hopping on a city bus. 

Barbados has one of the most comprehensive and user-friendly public transport networks in the Caribbean. With modern, electric government-run buses, always entertaining private buses and minivans, and a B$3.50 (US$1.75) price tag, using public transit certainly has its advantages. 

If you're willing to walk a little, buses can take you pretty much everywhere. If you're heading off the beaten path, a fleet of taxis goes anywhere the buses don't.

Go eco-friendly on a Barbados city bus

It’s impossible to miss the Barbados Transport Board buses that are the backbone of the local public transport network – they're decked out in the national colors, with blue paint and a prominent yellow stripe. Once notoriously unreliable, the upgraded fleet now boasts the largest collection of electric buses in the Caribbean : 49 air-conditioned vehicles equipped with Wi-Fi, crisscrossing the island alongside some older vehicles that are heading for retirement.

Outside the city terminals, these buses only stop at designated stops, helpfully marked “to city” and “out of city” to prevent hapless visitors from heading in the wrong direction. Pay with cash in exact change and check the Barbados Transport Board website for timetables.

Gain more time on the beach with fast minibuses 

Exchange comfort for speed with minibuses. These smaller private buses take the same route as the blue government buses and are painted with the inverse color scheme – yellow with a blue stripe. Despite being quite large, these “minibuses” move at quite a pace and, while not for the faint-hearted, are a convenient alternative for those in a hurry.

Yellow buses run on demand rather than a fixed schedule and usually have an attendant, so exact change is not required. They're usually hailed anywhere along the road once outside the downtown area; many are equipped with impressive sound systems that add an island soundtrack to the spectacular scenery outside.

Unmissable things to do in Barbados beyond the beach  

Get (very) up close and personal in ZR vans

Though unconventional passing maneuvers and questionable cornering speeds might make you feel like an extra in a Fast & Furious film, these privately run ZR vans are a cheap, convenient and fun way to get around Barbados.

Running on 11 short-to-medium routes across the island, these mainstays of the Barbadian transport system are typically slightly dented Toyota Hiaces or Nissan Urvans, easily identifiable by the maroon stripe on an otherwise white paint job.

In populated areas of the island, the vans can get crowded, especially during peak hours before and after work, and while there are technically passenger limits, they're not always adhered to. During a trip, you may find yourself in a contorted yoga position behind the driver's seat, balancing precariously on the edge of an already occupied bench seat or even sitting on the knee of a new friend.

More frequent than buses, the ZR vans can be hailed pretty much anywhere it’s fairly safe to stop or boarded at van stands in Bridgetown and Speightstown. Usually, there’s a helper on board to collect the fare, and exact change is not required, but small denominations are appreciated. To disembark, you’ll need to call out, “Bus stop please, driver!” well before your destination.

Tip for using ZR vans : Forget radio or streaming platforms – the very best place to keep abreast of the hottest tunes on the island is via the stressed-out speakers of the ZRs. For the full mobile-club experience, take a seat at the back between the booming bass boxes. And on the subject of seating, avoid the dodgy folding seats behind the driver. Not only are they a jarring ride once the springs age, you’ll also be getting up every time a passenger hops on or off.

Affordable taxis take you door to door

Fast, friendly and fairly affordable, taxis are hands down the most comfortable way to get around in Barbados. They’re identifiable by blue license plates that begin with Z and usually have a taxi light on the roof; there are also minivan taxis with ZM plates that are a good option for bigger groups. Larger hotels and resorts usually have a couple of house drivers who hang out near reception.

Prices are fixed according to distance, so there are no meters – drivers are generally very honest, but even so, it’s a good idea to check the price before hopping in. A short trip across Bridgetown begins around B$10 (US$4.95), and heading into town from the beaches of the southwest runs about B$40 (US$20).

Avoid waiting in the burning Bajan sun with these useful apps

While still a work in progress, the BeepBus journey-planner app has route information for all three types of bus services, in addition to timetables for Transport Board buses and live bus tracking on some ZR lines.

None of the major private-hire apps operate here, but the  pickUp Barbados app connects passengers with registered taxi drivers across the island. A fare estimate is available before booking, and rides can be paid electronically.

Accessible transportation in Barbados

Traditionally Barbados has been difficult for those with reduced mobility, but with the arrival of the Transport Board's new wheelchair-friendly electric buses, public transport on the island is now somewhat accessible. The yellow minibuses and ZR vans remain a challenge, however. Traveling on Barbados Buses

Do you want to see the island on a budget and without the hassle of driving your car? Three (3) types of Barbados bus options are available to you. Barbados’s regularly running bus system services each part of the island.

The buses cannot be missed; they are brightly painted in the national colors of blue with a horizontal yellow stripe and offer one of the best transportation methods in Barbados.

They are the roomiest and most comfortable public transport option and provide a relaxed atmosphere in which you can sit back and take in the sights and sounds of Barbados while en route to your next adventure.

These buses have signage on or above the front windshield , indicating the furthest point they travel to, and the drivers will also readily tell you whether your stop is along their route.

What About Bus Timetables?

The Transport Board buses run daily from as early as 5.30 am on weekdays and 6 am on weekends , as late as midnight .

They tend to run every half hour from the main bus terminals on weekdays and approximately every hour on weekends ; however, it’s always best to check the timetable of your specific route before setting off on your travels.

Hint : Although the bus schedules are relatively regular, as with anything in Barbados, you may wish to keep in mind our notorious ‘island time’ if you notice a bus not arriving at the exact appointed time – it’s a slightly slower pace than what you might be used to.

Additional Bus Information

The Transport Board buses are government-owned and operated, and the fare is BBD 3.50 one way for adults.

Tip : Because these buses operate with a farebox system and drivers do not carry change, please bring the correct fare. If you are boarding from one bus terminal, you can get money changed there.

It’s worth also noting that there are certain fare exceptions :

— School children under 18 years,  wearing a school uniform or  not, but have their Barbados Identification Card and a full-time student ID card, can travel for free until 8 pm on weekdays.

— Adults over 65 years are exempt from paying but must possess and present a Barbados Identification Card as soon as they hop aboard.

— Children under the age of 5 years also travel for free. However, they must be accompanied by an adult and cannot sit on the bus.

How Do I Catch a Bus in Barbados?

There are three Transport Board bus terminals :

— Fairchild Street, Bridgetown (opposite Jordan’s Supermarket) — Princess Alice Terminal, Bridgetown (near the main Post Office) — Speightstown, St. Peter.

The bus depot is located in Mangrove, St. Philip, with a sub-terminal in Oistins, Christ Church.

Bus stops are marked ‘ Out of City ‘ and ‘ To City ‘ dotted all over the island where you can catch these buses. Other bus stops look like little shelters and are named after women – part of a project called ‘ Adopt a Stop.’

Bus Alternatives

Barbados also has minibusses, smaller than the Transport Board buses and painted in the national colors, but in reverse – bright yellow with a horizontal blue stripe.

These buses are privately owned  and generally have a driver and a conductor to collect your fare. The fare is the same BBD 3.50 as per the blue buses.

Their final destination is shown in the bottom left-hand corner of the windshield. You can also catch these buses from any stops all over the island and the island bus terminals.

Hint : You should check out the exact routes of these buses before boarding, as they only travel select roads. Your best bet is to ask a local or one of the drivers/conductors.

Be aware that sometimes the drivers and conductors overload these buses to make more money, so be prepared to stand during peak travel times. T here are also white privately-owned ZR vans notorious here on the island. You can also catch these from the bus stops and the town’s two ‘van stands.’ All we can say is that they are genuinely a Bajan experience!

When it comes to exploring the enchanting island of Barbados, the local bus system offers an affordable and convenient means of transportation. In this blog, we will take a closer look at the three primary bus companies in Barbados—the Transport Board, yellow buses, and ZRs—and provide you with valuable insights on how to effectively use their services, including where to find timetables and essential information for a seamless journey.

Transport Board: The Transport Board is the government-operated bus service in Barbados, serving as the backbone of the island's public transportation system. Easily recognisable by their blue colour, these buses provide a reliable and extensive network covering various destinations throughout Barbados. The cost is BBD$3.50 per adult per journey so it doesn't matter if you do one-stop or ride the full line it is the same cost. This type of bus requires correct money to be paid on entry to the bus. Open any bills so the driver can see them and place them in the clear plastic container. The do NOT take CREDIT CARDS/DEBIT CARDS.

Finding Timetables: To access the Transport Board's timetables, you can visit their official website ( website ) or inquire at the bus terminals located in major towns such as Bridgetown, Speightstown, and Oistins. I have also found the apps Moveit and Rome to Rio can provide you with routes and times for the transport board buses. It is advisable to check for any updates or changes before planning your journey.

Yellow Buses: The vibrant yellow buses, commonly referred to as "reggae" or "reggae buses," are privately operated and offer a more flexible alternative for navigating Barbados. These minibuses are an integral part of the island's culture, known for their lively atmosphere and music. Hope on and pay as you exit or there will be a person collecting money while the driver is manoeuvring through the traffic. The cost is BBD$3.50 per adult per journey, it doesn't matter if you do one-stop or ride the full line it is the same cost. They will give change and will accept BBD or US dollars but NO CREDIT CARDS/DEBIT CARDS.

Locating Routes: To identify the routes covered by yellow buses, look for the route number prominently displayed on the front windshield. Additionally, destinations and route information are often indicated on signs in the front window or stickers affixed to the sides of the buses. From my experience, they tend to arrive a few minutes before the Transport Board buses to try and get the people to use them instead. You can find yellow buses at designated bus stops scattered across the island, where you can flag one down and hop on.

ZRs: ZR minibuses, with their white colour and burgundy stripe, are another popular mode of transportation in Barbados. These privately operated vehicles offer a more personalised and efficient option for getting around the island. They will bip their horn and try to get you to use them as they pass you in the street. Sometimes even if they are going in the opposite direction to you! They stop like they are an F1 team doing a pit stop as they get the passengers on board as quickly as possible, they play loud music and whizz along the road. They were my first experience with buses in Barbados and I thought they were fantastic. There do seem to be more ZR buses available in the south of the island, but there are some that head further north. They look very similar to some of the taxis so look for the ZR at the start of the registration number and sign in the window. The cost is BBD$3.50 per adult per journey so it doesn't matter if you do one-stop or ride the full line it is the same cost. They will give change and will accept BBD or US dollars but NO CREDIT CARDS/DEBIT CARDS.

They can provide guidance on the approximate frequency of ZRs along specific routes.

Essential Tips for Using Bus Services in Barbados:

Fare Payment: It is advisable to carry small bills and exact change when using the buses, as drivers may not always have change for larger denominations and the blue buses won't give change.

Plan Your Timing: Barbados' buses generally operate from early morning until around midnight, with less frequent services during weekends and public holidays. Be sure to plan your journey accordingly to avoid any inconvenience. From my experience, some routes can run as infrequently as every 2 hours.

Embrace the Experience: Riding on Barbados' buses, particularly the yellow buses and ZRs, offers a unique cultural experience. Embrace the lively atmosphere, local music playing on board, and engage in friendly conversations with fellow passengers.

“Our Tour Specialists have been getting a few queries from travellers who want to take the bus around the island but are a  bit cautious.  We absolutely get it…   it’s your first time in Barbados and there is a bit of unsurety. Worry not, here are 5 Things To Know When Taking The Bus In Barbados that will get you going like a true Bajan.”

1. Types of Buses

There are 3 types of public transport in Barbados – Transport Board buses (blue) , Mini buses (yello w) and ZR / Maxi Taxis (white with a maroon stripe) .  No matter where you stay, you will find one type or all three on your bus route.

2. Bus Fares in Barbados Are Super Affordable

It’s US$ 1.00 | BD$ 2.00 per trip, per person.  You will need exact fare if taking the Transport Board bus, however, the others will have a conductor who will give you change back. Having said that, smaller notes/bills are preferred Eg. $5, $10 or $20.  Change is always given in Barbadian currency and foreign coins are not accepted.

3. Buses Go Everywhere

Can you get a bus from the airport? Yes! Can you get a bus to Harrison’s Cave?  Yes!  Buses go just about everywhere you can imagine, from country to town from as early as 5 am until 11 pm.  Before or after those hours, you will need to take a cab or a taxi.

But… Even though it may be possible to take a bus, it may not be the most practical option for some occasions.  For example, our buses are not outfitted with undercarriage compartments for luggage, so though it may be possible to go to the bus stop outside of the airport and catch a bus.  It might not be practical if you have lots of cumbersome luggage; it may be easier to just take a cab/taxi.

Also if you are on a tight schedule…you might not want to take the bus.  Always allow yourself extra travel time for the stops on the way and possible traffic congestion (unlike a taxi, buses rarely divert from their designated routes).

4. Bus Stops

By law, buses are only supposed to stop at the designated bus stops.  So find the nearest one in the direction which you wish to travel and start your adventure.

Getting On the Bus:  To stop an approaching bus, simply put out your arm at about shoulder height for about 5 seconds.  This signals to the driver that you wish to catch his/her bus.  All buses will have a sign board with their final destination at the top or in the bottom of the windscreen.  If you are unsure if this is the correct bus, simply ask the driver and he will confirm or inform you which one to look out for.

Getting Off the Bus:  Some buses have both front and back doors, but most buses exit from the front only.  We recommend telling the driver or conductor where you wish to disembark.  This way they keep you in mind as the journey progresses and will ensure you get off at your designated point.

When in Rome… Most buses have a bell system, but just observe what others do on the journey to stop at their designated points and you simply do the same.  Particularly in ZRs / Maxi Taxis, the custom is to rap your knuckles making a knocking sound on the area directly above the windows.  This signals to the driver to stop.

5. It Is A Great Way To Embrace & Experience Typical Bajan Culture

Barbadians (aka Bajans) are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.  Don’t be afraid to engage in friendly conversation, it is a great way to pass the time and they are bound to share with you their views on the ins and outs of Barbados…where to get the best fish in Oistins…the best beaches to visit and so much more.

Bus rides are also a great vantage point for casual observations of Bajan life…kids going to school, bits of gossip whispered between travelling friends, wayside vendors peddling their wares and men ‘slamming a dom’ (playing dominoes) .

Bonus Info:   Follow these  simple directions if taking the bus to Harrison’s Cave or the Mount Gay Rum Tour from the West or South Coasts.  Remember…should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Taking the Bus to Harrison’s Cave:

First, you’ll need to make your way to Bridgetown; so board any bus heading marked BRIDGETOWN.  If you’re staying on the South Coast, your final stop in Bridgetown will be the Fairchild Street Terminal .  Make your way to the Princess Alice Bus Terminal.  If you’re staying on the West Coast it’s even easier as your bus will take you directly to the Princess Alice Bus Terminal .

From there you will board the Sturges bus to Harrison’s Cave.  The journey is approximately 45 minutes. Buses are available in both Transport Board (blue) or Mini buses (yellow).

Returning to your Hotel:  After your Harrison’s Cave tour, simply board the next bus back to Bridgetown and it will bring you back to the Princess Alice Bus Terminal.

If you’re on the South Coast, make your way back to the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal and you have the option of several buses such as a #11 , #3D or Silver Sands  which all take the same route back along the South Coast.

If you’re on the West Coast, board a Speightstown bus from the Princess Alice Terminal and simply alert the driver/conductor where you want to get off.

Taking the Bus to Mount Gay Rum Tour:

Make your way to Bridgetown; you may board any bus with the destination sign – Bridgetown. If you’re on the South Coast, your final stop in Bridgetown will be the Fairchild Street Terminal .  Make your way to the Princess Alice Bus Terminal.  If you’re on the West Coast it’s a cinch, as your bus will take you directly to the Princess Alice Bus Terminal .

From there you will take a #4 ZR / Maxi Taxi to Mount Gay.  Tell the driver or conductor you wish to get off by Mount Gay; you will be able to see the buildings just down the road from where you disembark.  This journey is approximately 5 minutes.

Returning to your Hotel:  After your Mount Gay Rum Tour, simply board the buses in the reverse order.  Take the #4 back to Bridgetown and it will return you to the Princess Alice Terminal.

The easternmost island in the Caribbean, Barbados juggles two different cultures to create a distinctly Bajan personality. Even after gaining its independence from Great Britain in 1966, this island still holds tight to British traditions like afternoon tea, cricket and horse races. Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Barbados is between July and November. Though these months fall within the Caribbean's hurricane season, hurricanes rarely hit the island, and you could attend one of the lively Crop Over Festival activities if you vacation during this time of year. Temperatures stay between the mid-70s and mid-80s year-round, so there's little reason to travel during the peak season, which occurs from late December to mid-April.

What You Need to Know

This is Little Britain Though island attire is acceptable at the beach, thanks to its colonial history, Bajans are fairly conservative in attitude and dress. Don't be surprised to see men wearing pants and women in dresses.

This is rum country  White, aged and flavored are just some of the rum varieties you'll find produced on the island. To sample some of Barbados' best, take an interactive tour of a top-notch distillery like  Mount Gay Vistior Center  or  St. Nicholas Abbey .

This is where the sun lives Barbados is only 13 degrees north of the equator, meaning you'll likely enjoy plenty of sunshine and hot weather during your visit. To avoid dehydration, heat strokes and sunburns, apply sunscreen regularly and drink plenty of water.

How to Save Money in Barbados

Be mindful of the exchange rate  The Barbadian or Bajan dollar (BBD) is permanently fixed at Bds$2 for every $1. Although most establishments accept U.S. currency, you should pay in Barbados dollars – your money will go further.

Visit in the offseason  Though you may face a hurricane, visiting between May and November will save you some coin on airfare and hotels .

Go for an all-inclusive  To avoid added food, drink and activity expenses, consider staying at one of the island's all-inclusive  resorts .

Culture & Customs

Independent since 1966, Barbados has maintained a political system similar to that of Britain, with a constitutional monarchy and a democratic parliamentary government. Bajan customs and ways of life are also similar. You should bring light colors and fabrics to wear on your vacation but note that Bajans tend to dress conservatively. Long pants for men and dresses for women are not uncommon.

Throughout the country, the Barbadian dollar (BBD) is used (Bds$2 equals $1). When tipping in Barbados, travelers should expect to add an additional gratuity based on the service received. However, unlike the U.S., some restaurants will include a 10% to 15% gratuity in food bills, so be sure to check your receipt before you pay.

And though English is the official language in Barbados, the Bajan dialect, which is typically used in casual conversations, may confuse some foreigners. Key phrases to remember include "wha gine on" (what's going on), "aight" (how are you) and "ga so" (go this way).

What to Eat

An array of Caribbean and international cuisine, with African, Indian and British influences can be found in Barbados, though the island's fresh seafood is the focal point of many restaurant menus. Look for sweet plantains, rice and peas, curries and rotis (flatbread) on menus. Gourmet chefs have opened the most sophisticated establishments in the St. James and Bridgetown areas, but you should expect to pay a pretty penny for the experience.

Popular fine dining restaurants include Champers Restaurant , The Tides and The Cliff . Make sure to plan ahead at these eateries since most require a reservation to get in the door. Recent visitors to Barbados mention that the food in St. Lawrence Gap is well worth the price; reasonable prices can also be found in Holetown on the central west coast.

Getting Around Barbados

The best way to get around Barbados is by car or bus. Taxis are an option; fares are set by the government. For example, it'll cost between 26 and 179 Barbadian dollars (about $13 to $89) to get from Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) to various parts of the island. There is also a public bus service that takes visitors to popular spots across the island, including Bathsheba and Harrison's Cave. 

Barbados is also a popular port of call for  cruise ships  sailing to the eastern or southern Caribbean. Cruise ships dock at the Bridgetown pier, which is located about 3 miles from downtown Bridgetown.

Entry & Exit Requirements

U.S. citizens will need a passport to enter Barbados; a visa is not required unless you plan to stay more than six months. One blank page is required in each passport. Visit the U.S. State Department's  website  for the latest information on foreign exit and entry requirements.

T he Caribbean is one of our favorite places to visit, and Barbados is one of the most stunning islands in the region. You can spend days lounging on white sand beaches, eating incredible food, and chatting with friendly locals.

Or, you can get adventurous!

One of the most incredible things for nature lovers in Barbados is to explore the stunning caves throughout the island.

Unlike other Caribbean islands that are primarily volcanic, Barbados is made up of about 80% coral limestone. This has led to an incredible underground cave system formed by water erosion through the limestone rock. If you’re visiting the island, be sure to check out these stunning caves in Barbados!

Best Caves in Barbados

Animal flower cave barbados.

Visiting Animal Flower Cave is one of my favorite things that I’ve done while living in Barbados . It may not be the biggest cave in Barbados, but the scenery is spectacular both around and inside. It’s the only accessible sea cave on the island!

History of Animal Flower Cave

It’s estimated that the Animal Flower Cave was formed 400,000-500,000 years ago out of coral. At one point, the cave would have been at sea level, but it now stands 6 feet due to the fact that Barbados is rising about 1 inch per 1,000 years. This just goes to show how old the cave truly is!

The cave was first discovered in 1780 by two English explorers. In 1912, the cave became more accessible when huge coral stone steps that led down to the base of the cliffs were built.

The name animal flower comes from the colorful sea anemones that live in the cave, known locally as animal flowers. The tour guide will point them out to you while walking through the cave!

How to get to Animal Flower Cave

Animal Flower Cave is on the island’s northernmost tip in the St. Lucy Parish of Barbados. Due to its remote location, the easiest way to get there is by car or taxi.

You can get close to Animal Flower Cave by public bus. Take the 1C from Bridgetown (Princess Alive Terminal) to Connelltown. Animal Flower Cave is about a 15-minute walk from the bus stop at the intersection of Highway 1C and Animal Flower Cave Road.

While it’s possible to get there by bus, I recommend renting a car for the day for a more pleasant experience. You can also check out other sights around that area, such as the Barbados Wildlife Reserve and Cherry Tree Hill Viewpoint.

Animal Flower Cave tour

Once you arrive, you can book a tour of the inside of the cave at the on-site bar. You do not need to book in advance, but if you’re visiting on a busy day, you may need to wait until a tour guide is available.

The cost to visit Animal Flower Cave is only 25 BDS (12.50 USD), making it one of the best things to do in Barbados if you’re visiting on a budget. They accept both cash and credit cards.

A local guide will bring you down the staircase into the cave. Don’t worry about being claustrophobic inside, as it opens directly into the Atlantic Ocean with lots of natural light and space to walk around. The sea view from inside the cave is gorgeous and makes for great photos!

It only takes about 15 minutes to walk through the cave, and the guide will explain the natural history along the way. Watch for the anemones in the many natural rock pools that give the cave its name!

At the end of the cave, there’s a pool of water you can swim in on calm days. Take advantage of this experience – the water is so clear and has a stunning turquoise color. It’s such a unique experience to swim inside a cave overlooking the ocean.

When the waves crash into the cave, they bring in fresh saltwater and sometimes even fish! It’s so tranquil to watch. My friends and I sat in the pool watching the waves come in for almost an hour until a giant one came and pushed us to the shore! The tour guide had quite a laugh at us.

The tours are generally limited to half an hour or so, but because we were there on a quiet day, the guide didn’t mind us lounging around.

Animal Flower Cave is open every day from 11 am – the last tour goes at 3:30 pm.

Animal Flower Cave Amenities

There is a bathroom where you can change in/out of your swimsuit and an outside shower. Be sure to bring your swimsuit and a fresh change of clothes when visiting this cave!

To the right of the cave entrance is a lookout point over Animal Flower Bay and the start of a beautiful trailhead along the cliffs. It’s a good idea to leave some extra time in your itinerary to walk along this coastal path, as the scenery is spectacular. There are also benches and picnic tables, so you could even pack a picnic and make a day of it!

There are also several small stands around the entrance where craftspeople sell their artwork and jewelry. This is a great place to pick up souvenirs from Barbados.

Animal Flower Cave Restaurant

There’s a great restaurant to the right of the cave that is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 am. The view of the northern cliffs from the restaurant is spectacular, and the food is just as good.

They are the only place on the island I found selling breadfruit tacos, one of my favorite things I ate in Barbados! You can see the menu online and make a reservation here.

Harrison’s Cave

Harrison’s Cave is one of the most well-known caves in Barbados. It consists of an underground cave system that visitors can explore by tram. You’ll find gorgeous caverns and crystallized formations inside the active cave system.

History of Harrison’s Cave

Natural processes formed Harrison’s Cave hundreds of thousands of years ago. The earliest records say the site was discovered in 1796, and there were several expedition attempts to explore Harrison’s Cave in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Due to the hard-to-access entrances and internal cave networks, little advancement was made until 1970 when engineer Ole Sorenson of Denmark and Anthony Mason of Barbados rediscovered and mapped out the cave.

After 1974, the Barbados government started developing Harrison’s Cave as an attraction and started excavating shafts and tunnels that could accommodate trams. It was officially opened in 1981.

How to get to Harrison’s Cave

Harrison’s Cave is in the island’s center in the Parish of St. Thomas—the easiest way to get there is by car or taxi, but you can also take public transport. Get the bus to the terminal in Bridgetown and then take the Route 4 Shorey Village bus.

I recommend renting a car and combining a day trip to Harrison’s Cave with other nearby attractions like St. Nicholas Abby, Welchman Hull Gully, or the Barbados Wildlife Reserve. There you can see the playful green monkeys!

Harrison’s Cave Barbados Tour

There are several tour options for exploring Harrison’sCave.

If you get to Harrison’s Cave on your own, you can book a one-hour tram of the cave for 60 BDS (30 USD). The best way to explore the cave is by tram, as the underground system is so extensive!

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also cave walk-in tours and eco-adventure tours.

This half-day tour picks you up at your hotel and takes you to Harrison’s Cave to explore by tram.

On a tram tour, you’ll be taken around the complex cave system to see the stalactites, stalagmites, and unique rock and mineral formations. Harrison’s cave is still considered active as there are underwater streams. Many of the walls are covered by flowstone, which causes them to glimmer in the surrounding lights and that of the tram.

Next to Harrison’s Cave is another known as Coles Cave. I haven’t been to it myself but have been told it is in the natural jungle, and you enter via a steep gully.

It is not gated, but I recommended hiring a local guide for safety if you want to check it out. If you decide to go alone, you’ll want to bring a good headlamp.

Final Thoughts

If you are visiting Barbados, even on a cruise day, you should make time to explore the caves on the island.

With its unique formations and geological history, the caves have been a source of fascination over the centuries. From stalactites and stalagmites to underground pools and hidden caverns, there is plenty to investigate in this underground paradise.

Make sure to bring comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, and your camera – you won’t want to miss out on capturing the wonders of these awesome caves!
