Tour introduction.

The Battle for Berlin was the decisive action that brought an end to the war in Europe. The tour will focus on the fierce and bitter action from the point when the Red Army approached the Oder River to the eventual fall of Berlin. Our first two nights will be on the edge of the destroyed city of Kustrin with the remaining nights spent in Berlin, a city that has arguably been through more change than any other in Europe over the last 50 years. Whilst both cities were virtually flattened during the Second World War, despite its division during the Cold War, Berlin has now become a vibrant, bustling and culturally rich metropolis. Eight times bigger than Paris, the city is home to endless galleries and museums, and displays a wide range of architecture, which can be explored to enrich your experience of this magnificent city. Importantly for this trip, in particular, the city doesn’t hold back in memorialising and documenting its turbulent past, leaving plenty to be discovered.

After crossing the Oder it took the Red Army just over three months to advance 100km and take the city. ‘Fortress Berlin’ as Goebbels named it was to be defended at all costs. The first line of defence at the Seelow Heights, some 90km east of Berlin, took Zhukov’s armies four days with heavy losses to break through, however once cleared it left the Red Army free to encircle the city and prepare the coup de grâce.

Berlin was defended by roughly 45,000 regular troops supplemented by the Police, the Hitler Youth and Volkssturm (essentially the German version of the Home Guard). The fighting began with a ferocious artillery barrage, adding to the already devastating destruction of the city. Although defended stoically, the continuous waves of Soviet attacks, the Germans’ limited resources and the brutal house to house fighting meant there was only going to be one outcome and the city finally surrendered on 2nd May 1945, nine days after the Russians had entered. The War in Europe was as good as over.

Day 2: Russians approach the Oder Explore the fascinating Ostwall bunker complex, mainly constructed pre-war and which due to lack of manpower was unable to provide significant resistance to the advancing Russians. Here we will explore the underground tunnels, walk 700m of extant ‘dragon’s teeth’ and visit the museum. Returning to Kostrzyn we discuss its desperate and ultimately futile defence amidst the eerie ruins of the Altstadt and the remains of its extant fortifications. (B,D)

Day 3: Battle of Seelow Heights At Kienitz, we examine the surprise Soviet river crossings which resulted in the creation of the massive bridgehead from which the final assault towards Berlin would commence. We will discover Marshal Zhukov’s command bunker and follow the Russian advance on the Seelow Heights, the last defensive line outside Berlin. Here an impressive museum documents the battle in detail, exhibiting several examples of Russian armour and artillery and offers great views of the battleground itself. At Jahnsfelde we discuss the tank ambush and the tragic Schlosspark where wounded German soldiers were massacred. Continue to Berlin to check-in to our hotel for four nights. (B,D)

Tracing World War II history in Berlin can be a challenge. During the conflict, the city was extensively bombed, and by the time it was over, much of Berlin lay in rubble, including the Reichstag, the seat of the German government. Some places in Berlin that survived were later demolished, as the Soviets who occupied the city worked to erase or destroy anything connected with Germany and the Second World War. However, several World War II sites survived and are now open to visitors.

These World War II sites in Berlin carry the ghosts of World War II. They include memorials to those who suffered, restorations of Berlin treasures, and even bullet marks in a sculpture, but they all give a sense of the immense struggle that centered here in the dark days of the war.

Most of these highlights lie in central Berlin. You can see many of them in a day or two, either by walking or by hopping on a bus. Others are located just a short distance outside the city.

11 Must-Visit Berlin WW2 Sites | Journey Through Time for the History Buffs

For a quick summary of these top places to visit check out this slideshow or continue on and read to learn about each in more detail:

1. The Reichstag

The Russian wall at the Reichstag.

The Reichstag in Berlin was once a symbol of power. Completed in 1894, it housed the government for several decades. In 1933, a famous fire destroyed part of the building shortly after Hitler became chancellor. He blamed others for the fire and closed the building, using the situation to take more power for himself. Perhaps he actually engineered the fire? No one knows.

Russian troops rushed into the Reichstag in April of 1945, determined to topple this last bastion of Nazi rule. A fierce battle ensued before the Russians captured the Reichstag. Severely damaged, the building lay abandoned until 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. When the Communists left the city, the new, unified German government moved into the Reichstag. The interior of the building is modern, with the notable addition of the iconic glass dome over the original building.

On your tour, note the wall written on by Russian soldiers at the end of World War II. The Germans decided to leave this wall exposed during the repairs as a reminder of the building’s history.

Free tours of the building are given daily. An audio guide is included. Register online for your tour before you arrive in Berlin. Bring your original ID (not a copy). This is the seat of the German government, and security is taken seriously.

2. Memorial To The Murdered Jews Of Europe

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin.

Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial is made of plain cement blocks, or stelae, laid out in neat rows on undulating ground. You’ll find no writing, no names, and no explanations. The stelae are of different heights and lengths. It’s surprising, but even the site’s official name, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe , is somewhat vague. Certainly, the Holocaust of World War II is memorialized here, but earlier pogroms are as well.

To help connect the memorial with its purpose, be sure to take a tour of the almost-hidden underground Information Center . It’s at the far end of the memorial, away from the street side where you enter. This small museum tells the stories of individual people affected by the genocide. At the entrance, six large portraits of lost Jews hang, larger than life. These represent the six million Jews murdered in the World War II era. This theme of individuals affected by the war continues throughout the museum.

One room is dedicated to families, with photos and words that speak for themselves. You’ll see notes hastily scribbled and thrown from trains. In the Room of Names, individual names line the walls, and you’ll hear a voice reading about each person and telling their story.

The Information Center is open every day except Monday. The Memorial is open to busy streets and always accessible. Allow about a half hour to see the Memorial and an hour to tour the Information Center. There’s a similar museum dedicated to the Holocaust in Washington, D.C .

3. Topography Of Terror Museum

The Topography of Terror Museum in Berlin.

The Topography of Terror is a Berlin documentation center that opened in 2010 to inform all who visit about the Nazi reign of terror. A visit to the Topography of Terror takes you to the very place where the war originated and where countless people suffered.

It’s an outdoor and indoor exhibit built along the exposed walls of what was once the headquarters of the Secret State Police, the SS, and the Reich Main Security Office. Work your way along the chronological displays outside. This excellent overview of the rise and fall of the German empire in the Nazi era is built along the original cellar walls.

Inside the Topography Of Terror Museum in Berlin.

Inside the documentation center, you’ll see displays memorializing the victims of terror, commemorating those who worked to end the terror, and explaining the events that transpired in Berlin from 1933 to 1945 and afterward. The center shows how Berlin went from one oppressive Nazi regime to another; the Berlin Wall cut through this same place just a few years later, bringing a different kind of suffering to Berliners.

The documentation center is open daily and is free of charge. Tours lasting one hour are also free and cover different topics.

4. Site Of Hitler’s Bunker

When visiting Berlin, the site of Hitler’s bunker is a must-see.In the final days of the war in Europe, Adolf Hitler, his mistress Eva Braun, and members of the Nazi inner circle retreated to an underground bunker in Berlin. The former air raid shelter served as their final headquarters. On April 29, 1945, Hitler married Braun, and a day later, they committed suicide.

When the Russians took over this sector of Berlin after the war, they attempted to blow up the bunker but failed. After the Berlin Wall went up nearby, no further demolition attempts were made. Later construction excavated some of the bunker. A parking lot covers the area today.

It’s amazing that this historical site featured no plaque until 2006. The bunker remains closed to the public, but you can visit and see how close to the Reichstag and other Berlin landmarks it is. A lawn borders the parking lot, so you can safely stay as long as you’d like.

Before I went to Berlin , I figured I would skip standing in this parking lot, since nothing of the bunker is visible. But when I went, I found that just standing on the site and reading the plaque was an interesting experience. It’ll only take 10 minutes or so to take in this piece of Berlin history.

5. Berlin Cathedral

The Berlin Cathedral in Germany.

The impressive Berlin Cathedral , with its magnificent dome, sits among the stately museums on Museum Island, with the Spree River flowing nearby. The baroque-style cathedral is the largest Protestant church in the area and dates to 1905. Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to build a cathedral to rival Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome and Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London.

After suffering bomb damage in World War II, the Berlin Cathedral sat in disrepair for decades. The restoration was finally completed in 1993. Be sure to climb the 267 steps up to the dome for a magnificent panoramic view of Berlin.

6. German Historical Museum

Berlin has no major museum dedicated to World War II, but a section of the large German Historical Museum used to cover the subject. On the ground floor, you were able to find an exhibit titled The Nazi Regime and Second World War . Videos as well as objects and documents covered what transpired in Germany from 1933 to 1945. While not large, the exhibit was fascinating for anyone interested in World War II.

An hour was more than enough time to tour the exhibit. The museum is adjacent to the Berlin Cathedral, so you can plan to visit both of these in about 3 hours.

Due to the renovations, the German Historical Museum’s permanent exhibition is now closed. It is expected to open again at the end of 2025. The adjacent Pei Building’s daily opening hours in December 2023 are 10 am to 6 pm, (Thursday 10 am to 8 pm). It will be closed on 24 December

7. Tiergarten

The Tiergarten in central Berlin.

The Tiergarten in central Berlin, an oasis of greenery and ponds amid glass and chrome, provides 500 acres of park. During World War II, bombs damaged the Tiergarten. Then, with so much of Berlin suffering after the war, people cut down the trees in their desperation for firewood. Most of the green growth in the Tiergarten today dates only from the 1950s.

World War II shows up in the Tiergarten in the form of a massive Soviet war memorial. This commemorates the Russian soldiers who died liberating Berlin from the Nazis. The marble used to build it came from Hitler’s Chancellery. Two T-34 tanks are on display, and a statue of a Soviet soldier rises into the air, standing guard over the memorial.

The composers statue in the Tiergarten.

Also look for the impressive sculpture honoring composers Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart. When you get close, you can observe the bullet holes from the battles of World War II still in the marble. The memorial was taken down in 2000, restored, and reinstalled in its place of honor among the tall trees.

With its World War II sites and Berlin Wall markers, Berlin is an intense city. After a day of touring, amble through the Tiergarten, clear your mind and relax for a while by the peaceful pond.

8. House Of The Wannsee Conference

The House of the Wannasee Conference near Berlin.

History buffs may want to include a day trip to the town of Wannsee, just a 30-minute train ride from central Berlin. The mansion where the Wannsee Conference took place in 1942 is open to visitors. This is where German leaders, called together by Reinhard Heydrich, met to decide how to implement the Final Solution.

The House of the Wannsee Conference became an official museum and education center on the 50th anniversary of the conference in 1992. Exhibits inside the house reveal what happened at the fateful conference. Documents, propaganda posters, and leaflets are on display. You can also peruse archival materials from Eastern Europe that became available in the 1990s after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

9. Sachsenhausen Memorial And Museum

The Sachsenhausen Memorial And Museum near Berlin.

Sergio Foto / Shutterstock

About 20 miles by train outside Berlin, the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum was once the site of a large concentration camp. Opened before the beginning of the war, the camp held a total of more than 200,000 prisoners by the time it was liberated and closed in 1945. Knowing that the Soviets were on their way in the spring of 1945, the German SS special units tried to evacuate the camp, forcing inmates to participate in death marches. Only the sick were left behind to greet their liberators.

Today, the camp is a memorial to those who suffered and lost their lives here. The barracks have been reconstructed so that visitors can get an idea of what life was like during the war. The tour includes the voices of 20 prisoners talking about work, violence, and living with their memories. It’s a sober place, but those who run the museum and memorial make it a place of remembrance to honor those lost.

I highly recommend the organized tour of Sachsenhausen. Make the most of your visit by learning the background of the camp and hearing the stories of the prisoners as you go. The official on-site tour is about 3 hours long.

Berlin is a complex city with layers of history on display. Modern architecture and quirky culture are easy to find. Signs of World War II are all around in Europe , ready to be discovered and explored.

10. Bebelplatz

The site of the famous Nazi book-burning campaign of 1933 is an interesting World War II sight to see in Berlin. When you stroll across Bebelplatz you’ll see a glass plate set in the paving stones and below it an underground room with empty bookshelves.

Heinrich Heine’s foreboding words: “Those who burn books will in the end burn people,” is one of the most frequently quoted phrases in recent history. These sobering words grace the bronze plaque you will find at your feet in the center of Bebelplatz Square.

The 20.000 burnt books were chosen according to blacklists made by the librarian Wolfgang Herrmann, which were then used to plunder private bookshelves, public libraries and academic collections.

11. Olympic Stadium

Built by renowned architect Werner March, this geometric masterpiece has a dark history.

At the dawn of the war, the German company Blaupunkt produced primers for anti-aircraft weapons here, but among the general public, the Reichssportfeld was known for hosting propaganda events.

Today, the stadium is an open-air venue used for concerts and other large events. On event-free days, visitors can take a tour of the stadium and learn about its role during WW2.

The result would be a decisive Soviet victory – the death of Adolf Hitler and the coup de grâce to National Socialism . This bitterly contested battle, however, would leave Berlin almost unrecognisable to visitors fortunate enough to have witnessed the German capital in its pre-war splendour. A city that still today bears the scars of the street-by-street, house-by-house, cellar-by-cellar fighting that would become emblematic of the most symbolic battle of the war .

More than  80,000 Soviet soldiers  would die before this battle was over and this tour includes access to two huge Soviet memorials – Treptower Park and the Tiergarten – that were established after the war to commemorate these dead. We additionally visit the German Russia Museum in Karlshorst , where less than a week after the end of the Battle of Berlin the instrument of surrender of Nazi Germany was signed.

Original Berlin Tours

Tour Details

The original berlin cold war teufelsberg spy tower tour.

The Original Berlin Teufelsberg Tour is a one of a kind experience.  Just look at those radar domes!!  Step back in time to post-war Berlin when it was the battleground of ideas.  The focal point of the Geopolitical struggle between East and West during the Cold War , a war of smoke and mirrors. Visit the only still standing abandon NSA spy station available to the public that we know of!

This Cold War Berlin Tour Starts by visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial.  Local guides will give you the complete background to the Berlin Wall, why and how it was constructed and its subsequent development over its 28 years of existence . Here we see the only completely preserved part of the wall with all of its composite elements surviving in Berlin today. We hear some of the personal stories of triumph and tragedy.  Those who tried and often failed to escape to the west.

From there we head to the East Side Gallery and walk along the longest surviving stretch of the wall and officially the largest outdoor art gallery in the world and see the incredible and iconic street art which actually led to its preservation.

After the East Side gallery, we head off the beaten track to the Grunewald forest.  Where we ascend the Teufelsberg or Devil’s Mountain. Overlying Albert Speer’s unfinished military technical facility. The hill was constructed from millions of cubic meters of rubble, cleared from Berlin after the war. With the construction of the Berlin Wall and the deteriorating relations between the East and West, the site became incredibly significant and a top-secret spy facility was developed there and remained in use right up until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 .

We will explore Teufelsberg’s role and function during the Cold War . Marvel at its breath-taking views over Berlin.  The site, now privately owned, and is being redeveloped and re-purposed for multiple community projects. Teuflesberg now contains one of the largest street art galleries in Europe . The gallery changes often and has artworks from many world-famous artists. Artists from all over have been adorning the exposed walls of the spy station for years.

This place won’t be open to the public forever and is truly a once in a lifetime visit. We highly recommend you take this tour!

START at (A) Brandenburg Gate ( map )

Nazis and Brandenburg Gate Third Reich Tour

This monument has always been very symbolic for Germans and that’s why Hitler sent his paramilitary SA to march with torches on the evening of January 30th, 1933, the day he was appointed chancellor.

Go through the gate and look at the Park, the Tiergarten. At your right, near the Reichstag is the next stop.

(B)  Memorial for the Gypsies  (in German “Sinti und Roma”) who were killed in the camps.  Take a left on the Ebertstraße to the next stop.

(C)  Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe ( map )

This memorial is also known as the Holocaust Memorial ( read our full post ). It opened in 2005 and designed by architect Peter Eisenmann from New York.

Above the ground, you see 2,711 concrete blocks or stelae. They are all of different height and size and you can walk between them.

Holocaust Memorial Berlin

Straight and left, at the corner of Cora-Berliner- and Hannah-Arendt-Straße is the entrance to the free of charge information center (D) with more information about the Holocaust.

At the corner of Hannah-Arendt-Straße and Ebertstraße in the park is another memorial.

(E) Memorial to the Homosexual Victims of the Third Reich

Near the information center, cross Hannah-Ahrend Straße and follow Gertrud-Kolmar-Straße until you see a parking lot on your left with an information board.

More often than not you’ll see groups of people with a guide.

(F)  Hitler’s Bunker ( map )

This is where Adolph Hitler spent most of his remaining time between January 16th and April 30th 1945, when he finally took his own life.

The Soviets destroyed all the facilities at the surface such as exits or ventilation shafts.

The board provides useful information both in German and English. In the year 2004, the German movie “Downfall” about the last days in the bunker was released. Read our full post .

(G) Outline of Georg Elser ( map )

Georg Esler Memorial in Berlin Nazi Tour

Turn left into An der Kolonnade and then right into Wilhelmstraße.

The outline of a face shows Georg Elser, a worker who unsuccessfully tried to kill Hitler in November 1939 in the “Bürgerbräukeller” in Munich, where Hitler and many high Nazi officials celebrated the anniversary of their unsuccessful coup in Bavaria in 1923.

Georg Elser was killed in the Dachau camp in April 1945. In 2015, a German movie about him,  “13 minutes”, was also released internationally.

(H) New Chancellery ( map )

Continue on Wilhelmstraße until you reach the next intersection at Voßstraße.

The whole block on your right was the site of the former “New Chancellery” (“Neue Reichskanzlei").

The purpose of this building, with a length of 421 m (1,263 ft.), was not to live or work (Hitler spent more time in his apartment in the Old Chancellery next door where he worked), but to impress.

(I) Ministry on Aviation  ( map )

Former Ministry of Air Force Nazi Tour Berlin

Continue on Wilhelmstraße and you’ll see an enormous gray building, which is today houses the German Department of Finance.

It was built in 1935/36 as the Ministry of Aviation under Hermann Göring. The building has more than 2,000 offices and several courtyards.

Here, Göring organized the German Air Force and planned the blitz of U.K. cities.

As part of the peace terms resulting from World War I, Germany had not been allowed to have an Air Force, thus the ministry chose the more civilian name.

The allies spared the building to have a landmark among the ruins and the German Democratic Republic used it as well as does the Federal Republic of Germany now.

In many movies about the Third Reich, the building serves as location and stars as the New Chancellery “ (see above), e.g. in the film “Valkyrie”.  Read our full post on the building .

(J) Topography of Terror ( map )

Topography of Terror Nazi Berlin Tour

At the end of the block turn left at Niederkirchner Straße (named after a communist resister) and you’ll see about 200 m of the Berlin Wall.

Behind the Wall is Topography of Terror, a documentation center on the site where the SS and the Gestapo had their headquarters.

The buildings (a former hotel and a school of arts and crafts as well as office buildings) were razed after the war.

In the late 1980s, the documentation center was created. A jail and underground interrogation cells were found.

The documentation center has permanent exhibits outside and inside the buildings as well as special shows. And there is a cafeteria and lots of restrooms in the basement.

Read our full post on the Topography of Terror .

(K)  S-Bahnhof Anhalter Bahnhof ( map )

Anhalter Bahnhof 3rd Reich Tour Berlin

Follow Niederkirchner Straße, take a left on Stresemannstraße and arrive at the S-Bahnhof Anhalter Bahnhof.

The yellow brick structure is the portico of the former station Anhalter Bahnhof, the biggest in pre-war Berlin. This is one of the stations where German Jews were sent to the camps in the East.

Here, third-class railway cars were added to regular trains and the mostly elderly Jews had to buy their tickets to Theresienstadt; 9,600 people were transported in 116 trains.

Go downstairs into the S-Bahn station for pictures of the old station building.

(L) German Resistance Memorial Center ( map )

German Resistance Memorial Center Berlin Nazi Tour

Follow the Schöneberger Straße down to a waterway, the Landwehrkanal and follow the canal West passing the new buildings of Potsdamer Platz and the Kulturforum (the big yellow library building and the glass building with the black roof, a museum under renovation), the Berlin Science Center (a building from the 19th century with a 1980s annex in light blue and salmon).

After the big white building turn right into Stauffenbergstraße. Across the street enter a courtyard: this is the entrance to the German Resistance Memorial Center.

Graf Stauffenberg, the German officer who tried to kill Hitler on July 20th 1944 (that’s what the film “Valkyrie” is about), was shot in the yard as his office was in the building.

The Memorial is a museum not only about him but about all Germans who tried to resist the Nazi Regime in one way or another. Some scenes of “Valkyrie” were filmed here as well.

At the Kulturforum or at Potsdamer Platz you find buses and the S- or U-Bahn.

More suggestions:

Take the S-Bahn 5 or the U-Bahn 2 to “Olympiastadion” to see the Olympic Stadium from 1936. First, check if the stadium is open for visitors as it’s still used for football/soccer and other sports events.

At S-Bahn (the ring) /U-Bahn (U 8) “Gesundbrunnen” you find the exhibit “Mythos Germania” about Hitler’s and Albert Speer’s plans for a new capital “Germania” by Berliner Unterwelten e.V.

Cold War Berlin

Private guided tour.

The Rise and Fall of Communist East Germany

At the heart of The Cold War

Unlike any other place in Europe, the Berlin Wall symbolised the division of the continent into East and West for the duration of the Cold War. Until 1989, the so-called Iron Curtain, which resembled a front line of war, twisted through Berlin's streets and the lives of its citizens. On this 4 hour private guided tour, your professional and specialist guide will take you on an unforgettable journey through the streets of the Cold War capital. Explore the former Soviet sector of Berlin, hear stories about life behind the Iron Curtain. Learn how the GDR and the Stasi (State Security), the largest spy network the world has ever seen, maintained control over their population for 40 years. Hear exciting spy stories from MI6, the CIA and the KGB. Walk along Bernauer Strasse, the famous site of many fascinating escape attempts and view the death strip from above.

berlin war tour

The East German government had begun sealing off the East German border to West Germany as early as 1952, making it increasingly dangerous to flee directly to the West. Many chose to take advantage of the last means of escape, and reached West Germany by crossing the sector borders through to West Berlin. In the early hours of August 13, 1961, Berliners living in the east of their city were awakened by the moaning of heavy machinery rolling hastily through their streets toward the boundary that separated the eastern and western parts of their city. Confounded citizens looked on as East German soldiers dug holes and tore up sidewalks, making way for barbed wire that would close off the dividing line. Armed troops manned the crossing points between the two sides and, by morning, a ring of Soviet soldiers surrounded the city. Overnight, the right to pass between the two sections of Berlin had ended. Running through cemeteries and canals, criss-crossing through the city streets, the Berlin Wall was a shocking representation of the Iron Curtain that separated all of Europe between competing ideologies. Berlin was always the centerpiece of the Cold War and on multiple occasions very nearly the front line of real combat.
