Viking Truvor Review

Despite political pressures that have created one of the chilliest travel climates in Russia since the Cold War, Viking Truvor's regular "Waterways of the Tsars" river cruises between St. Petersburg and Moscow give Western passengers an in-depth, exceedingly comfortable introduction to the world's largest country.

Built in the former East Germany in 1987 for Soviet vacationers (think bare-bones cabins and bathrooms so small the sink doubled as a shower), the 204-passenger Truvor was renovated from stem to stern in 2013. Like its sister Viking ships sailing in Russia, Truvor merges a muted Scandinavian sensibility with a nod to its Russian surroundings. Light woods combine with blue and beige upholstery, and walls are hung with reproductions of vintage Russian maps and posters.

As a pioneer in Russian cruising -- the company owns its ships, rather than leasing them, and has operated there since 1997 -- Viking holds an edge in staff and programming. In addition to local guides, Truvor sails with three Russian tour escorts who provide expert -- and, at times, surprisingly candid -- commentary on the country's rich history and fascinating, complicated present.

Truvor's itinerary includes three days each in St. Petersburg and Moscow, with complimentary guided excursions. The ship docks about an hour's drive outside the city centers, but Viking offers free bus transportation for passengers who want to explore on their own, as well as detailed instructions on how to access the cities' excellent subway systems.

In between the major cities, Truvor winds through a web of rivers, canals and lakes (including Ladoga and Onega, Europe's largest), with scenery that ranges from wild to suburban. Highlights include a stop at remote Kizhi Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its wooden, onion-domed churches built without nails, and the "Golden Ring" city of Uglich, where passengers stop for homemade moonshine and conversation at the home of a local resident.

Fellow Passengers

Most Truvor passengers have taken at least one other river trip, and on a recent cruise, more than half of the cruisers were repeat Viking customers. While the average age has been skewing younger in recent years, the demographic for Russia cruises is decidedly 55 and older. American couples dominate, though this itinerary also draws Canadians, Brits and Australians.

Viking Truvor Dress Code

Like most river ships, Truvor emphasizes comfort over high style. As one pearl-draped London passenger noted somewhat disappointedly during an August sailing, pullovers and khakis were as common at the captain's welcome and farewell dinners as at every other meal, despite Viking's suggestion that those special evenings called for "dressy, but not formal" attire. (Those who plan to attend a performance at Moscow's famed Bolshoi Theatre might want to pack a sports jacket and dress, however.)

Layered clothing, comfortable walking shoes and rain gear are essential in Russia. Truvor sails between early May and mid-October, and even midsummer weather can be blustery and cold.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

If you don't have the energy to make a big Easter dinner or don't feel like searching for missing ingredients at the stores open on Easter , you can still partake in a holiday meal to rival the best of them. Here, you'll find a list of restaurants open on Easter Sunday in 2024, many of which offer nationwide locations, curbside pickup, and delivery options . Everyone's favorite American fare will be operating during its usual Sunday hours on Easter Sunday. Applebee's juicy riblets, here you come!

Bahama Breeze

Go for that beach-y, island vibe on Easter by heading to Bahama Breeze . The restaurant's refreshing cocktails, accompanied by appetizers like coconut shrimp, will have you feeling at ease on that Sunday.

Benihana will be open for takeout and delivery, but (arguably) the best way to enjoy the Japanese grill is by watching the chefs prepare your meal in person.

Listen up, breakfast lovers: This one's for you! If you find yourself on Easter morning craving some eggs, biscuits, and everything in between—head on over to Bob Evans ! You can even enjoy several menu items created specifically for the holiday.

Bonefish Grill

The classic seafood restaurant will be open on Easter. Note that Bonefish Grill has offered a special carryout Easter menu in the past, but it's still TBD for this year. They do, however, offer family bundles all year round, including fish, salad, fresh bread and pesto, and house-baked cookies.

Boston Market

Boston Market is known for its homestyle and comforting meals. The good news, they'll be open for the holiday and usually offer premade Easter dinners, a la carte meals and Easter Day meals.

Buffalo Wild Wings

So what that wings aren't a conventional Easter Sunday choice—they're dang good, anyway! Though Buffalo Wild Wings is typically open, call your local restaurant to be sure, then stop by or order in.

The Capital Grille

The upscale steakhouse chain usually offers a gorgeous three-course dine-in meal along with brunch features for Easter. The Capital Grille has also previously offered Easter specials as a take-out option, but details for 2024 haven't yet been released. Regular takeout will still be available, regardless.

Carrabba's Italian Grill

Carrabba's is the perfect place to grab a traditional Italian meal this year. The chain offers a host of new spring dinner specials and family bundles and should be open for both delivery and carryout on Easter Sunday.

Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen

Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen offers both dine-in and takeout options in 2024 with plenty of family bundles to choose from. Plus, you can add a traditional strawberry cheesecake to your bundle order—or springtime drinks like lemonade and iced tea.

Bunnies might not be allowed to have cheese, but that doesn't mean *you* can't have some pizza on Easter! In fact, grab a slice from Domino's , because they'll be up and running on the holiday.

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

You really can't go wrong with a steak—no matter what day of the year it is. Most Fleming's locations will be open for both to-go orders and dine-in reservations.

Fogo de Chão

Last year, the Brazilian steakhouse offered a few fabulous Easter dinner bundles , which included your choice of protein, plus a variety of sides and—of course!—some delicious cheese bread too. While we don't know if that will be offered again in 2024, the restaurant will certainly be open with their typical menu.

Easter pancakes are a thing, right? IHOP sure thinks so! The 24-hour diner chain is open as usual on the holy Sunday. Every bunny will leave feeling happy and full!

Hop on over to Kona Grill for an Easter Honey Ham Brunch, or pick up an Easter meal to enjoy at home. They can also be delivered!

We are pausing our live coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Today, Russia threatened to target NATO nuclear weapons and facilities if they were deployed in Poland.

Deputy foreign minister Sergey Ryabkov told the state-run TASS news agency that joint NATO nuclear missions near the Russian border would be considered a threat to its security.

"Let alone permanent deployment [that] hotheads in Warsaw are speaking about," he adds.

It followed Poland's president saying this week that "we are ready" to host the nuclear weapons of NATO allies in response to Russia moving its own to neighbouring Belarus.

Ukraine fires US missiles for first time

Meanwhile, Sky's partner network NBC News reports that Ukraine has already used long-range ballistic missiles from the US against Russia twice this month.

The Army Tactical Missile System - dubbed ATACMS – was used twice against Russian forces in occupied Crimea and Ukraine.

But Russia's US ambassador Anatoly Antonov said the transfer of ATACMS was "impossible to justify," and added: "Aren't local politicians afraid of drowning in the quagmire of conflict?

"Washington will not be able to get out of the horrible swamp that has absorbed the blood of ordinary soldiers."

Belarus calls for peace

Belarus' Aleksandr Lukashenko said conditions for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are "ripe," but warned the risk of military incidents with Kyiv was "quite high".

He claimed that about 120,000 Ukrainian servicemen are stationed on the border between Ukraine and Belarus.

His comments came hours before Belarus claimed - without evidence - that it stopped an attack on Minsk by drones that were launched from Lithuania.

Zelenskyy meets with Hunt

And the UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv today, days after the UK approved £500m in aid.

Russia says it could downgrade its relations with the US, UK and other Western countries if its frozen assets are confiscated.

Deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said Russia would retaliate if plans to use $300bn in assets frozen since 2022 are put into action.

"Lowering the level of diplomatic relations is one of the options, of course", he said according to state news agency RIA.

"Many high-ranking representatives in our government have already spoken about the issues of our financial, economic and material response to this step [confiscation], which we are warning our opponents, as before, not to take.

"We are now studying the optimal form of reaction, where countermeasures include actions against the assets of our Western opponents as well as diplomatic response measures."

The Kremlin previously called the current state of its US ties as "below zero", but no formal downgrade of relations has occurred since the Ukraine war began.

Belarus claims it stopped an attack on Minsk by drones that were launched from Lithuania. 

According to RIA news agency Ivan Tertel, the head of Belarus' security service, said it had carried out "a number of acute security measures" which allowed it to shoot down the drones. 

He provided no evidence for the claims. Lithuania's army says it had not taken any hostile action against other states. 

Poland's president Duda advised earlier this week that Poland would be prepared to host NATO nuclear weapons if required to strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. 

Poland has historically been vulnerable to European wars, and has increased its defence budget dramatically in response to Russian aggression on the continent.

Russia's deputy foreign minister responded in typically combative manner by stating that any NATO nuclear capability deployed into Poland would be targeted .

However, Russia's threatening rhetoric needs to be placed in to context.

Russia's unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine has raised the prospect of a wider European conflict and threatened European security. 

The NATO alliance provides strength in numbers, and Poland's number one priority will be the protection of its people. 

Had Ukraine not relinquished its nuclear weapons in return for guarantees of its territorial integrity - signed by Russia and USA - under the terms of the Budapest Memo in 1994, would Russia have invaded?

Although modern nuclear weapon delivery systems do not need to be placed close to their intended targets - they can be fired thousands of miles - their forward deployment sends a powerful political message. 

President Putin announced his intention to forward deploy nuclear weapons into Belarus in June 2023, and that process was completed last month. 

This provocative initiative was deliberately designed to deter the West from increasing its support for Ukraine.

So, Russia's entirely predictable response to the news that NATO might do the same by forward deploying nuclear weapons into Poland lacks a degree of credibility. 

Russia knows that if the West was to commit fully to Ukraine's defence, Russia would be unable to achieve its strategic objectives.

Russian threatening rhetoric has - to date - tempered Western enthusiasm for engaging further, and we can expect more of the same over the coming weeks as Russia pursues its "Special Military Operation" in Ukraine.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says the conditions are "ripe" for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia as both sides are at a stalemate.

According to Russian state-run news agency TASS, Putin-ally Mr Lukashenko pointed to preliminary talks held in 2022 between Russia and Ukraine as a starting point for negotiations.

Despite this, he also said the risk of military incidents with Kyiv was "quite high", and claimed that around 120,000 Ukrainian servicemen are stationed on the border between the two countries.

He also said "several dozen" Russian tactical nuclear weapons had been deployed in Belarus, as part of an agreement signed last year with Vladimir Putin.

Earlier today, Russia's deputy foreign minister said Russia would target NATO nuclear weapons if they were stationed in Poland.

Poland's defence minister has said the country is ready to help military-aged Ukrainian men get ready to go back to fight Russia.

Kyiv said yesterday that men aged between 18 and 60 will not be able to apply for or renew their passports while living abroad. (see previous post)

Speaking to Polsat News television, minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland is prepared to help send Ukrainian men subject to military service back to Kyiv, without sharing details on how.

"I think many Poles are outraged when they see young Ukrainian men in hotels and cafes, and they hear how much effort we have to make to help Ukraine," he added.

Nearly one million Ukrainian refugees have relocated to Poland since Russia started the war in February 2024.

Ukraine has temporarily banned men eligible to serve in the military from applying for passports abroad.

Men aged between 18 and 60 will only be able to apply for or renew their passports in Ukraine.

Ukraine's foreign ministry also said consular services for men in the age group are suspended until 18 May.

Yesterday, foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba hit out at Ukranian men living elsewhere and said that "staying abroad does not relieve a citizen of his or her duties to the homeland".

Around 86,000 military-aged Ukrainian men are believed to be living in the EU.

Earlier this month, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a bill lowering the age limit of conscription from 27 to 25.

 Emmanuel Macron says "there is a risk our Europe could die" at a speech today.

The French president called the war in Ukraine the "principal danger for European security".

He adds that the main condition for peace in Europe is that "Russia does not win this war of aggression".

Speaking from the Sorbonne University in Paris, Mr Macron calls for a boost in Europe's cybersecurity capacity, closer defence ties with the UK and the creation of a European academy to train high-ranking military personnel. 

"There is no defence without a defence industry ... we've had decades of under-investment," he adds.

"We must produce more, we must produce faster, and we must produce as Europeans."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is meeting Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in Kyiv - shortly after the UK approved £500m in aid for Ukraine.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the latest military aid package earlier this week, which includes around 400 vehicles, 60 boats, 1,600 strike and air defence missiles, and four million rounds of ammunition.

Posting on Telegram, the Ukrainian president said he thanked Mr Hunt for the UK's support, and added they discussed more sanctions against Russia.

Russia's US ambassador says the transfer of long-range ballistics missiles to Ukraine is "impossible to justify".

Three American officials told NBC News, Sky's partner network, that Ukraine had already used the US's Army Tactical Missile System - dubbed ATACMS – against Russia twice (see previous post).

In response, Anatoly Antonov said "local officials 'retroactively' confirmed the fact that extremely dangerous weapons had been sent to Kiev", and called it an "underhand act".

According to the Russian embassy's Telegram channel, he added that Russia had "already shot down several ATACMS missiles" and "will continue to do so".

Mr Antonov also said: "Aren't local politicians afraid of drowning in the quagmire of conflict?

Electric car pivot triggers plunge in vehicle production

Carmakers brace for more volatility this year after March output sinks by 27pc

British car production fell by more than a quarter last month as some production lines were retooled to make electric vehicles (EVs).

The number of cars built fell to 59,467, down by 27pc compared to a year earlier, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

It marked the first drop since August but the SMMT said the fall had been expected as manufacturers adjusted their factories to make a next generation of cars, including electric ones.

An early 2024 Easter bank holiday also played a part, with fewer working days this March than the year before, the industry group said. 

The Nissan Leaf , which is made in Sunderland, is among the vehicles getting a revamp, with production of the current version having stopped last month and production of its successor set to begin again in 2026.

Likewise, the Mini plant in Oxford finished production of the Mini Clubman in February and started producing its fifth-generation Minis in March, with production of two all-electric models set to also begin from 2026.

Battery electric, plug-in and hybrid cars combined represented more than a third of all UK production in March, the data showed. 

Overall in the first three months of 2024, 222,371 cars were produced, representing a 1.1pc rise compared to last year.

Almost three quarters of these were made for export.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “This fall is not unexpected given the wholesale changes taking place within UK car factories as existing models are run out and more plants transition to electric vehicle production.

“We can expect further volatility throughout 2024 as manufacturers lay the foundations for a successful zero emission future.

“Recent investment announcements have boosted confidence and enhanced the UK’s reputation but there needs to be an unrelenting commitment to competitiveness.

“Free and fair trade deals must be secured, energy costs reduced and the workforce upskilled if we are to attract further investment to improve productivity and decarbonise automotive manufacturing and its supply chain.”

The SMMT expects car and light van production to fall 6.2pc this year to 940,000 vehicles, before returning to growth in 2025. 

Output is anticipated to rise above one million vehicles again from 2026 and reach 1.2m before the end of the decade as more EV production starts across the UK.
