Everything is bigger in Texas, right? Even our thirst. Houston has become known for all its amazing craft breweries. We have come a long way since 1994 when Saint Arnold Brewing Company launched. A few years later No Label Brewing Company, then Buffalo Bayou Brewery, 8 th Wonder Brewery & Karbach opened. Now it seems we have a beer entrepreneur expansion almost as big as our thirst.

We offer a ton of different tours to not only the Breweries in Houston & the surrounding areas, but also the distilleries and wineries.

Every 3 rd Saturday of the month we offer our Get Crafty (beer) Houston which is very unique tour taking you to 3 of Houston’s local craft breweries but also one of Houston’s hidden secrets, The Beer Can House. Yep, a house made completely out of beer cans right in the middle of a neighborhood. This is a “DO NOT MISS” tour in Houston.

All our tours include transportation, tour guide, entry fees, tours at each location, 2-4 tastings at each location, souvenir glasses from each location, and truly amazing swag bags. Yes, however we do not recommend drinking in between each brewery. You will be given plenty of beer during your tour. We do not provide it, but you may bring it. We ask that you not bring glass.

Yes. Please dispose of your trash when departing the Wave & we do prefer you do not bring glass on board. At least a couple stops will have food options if you want to purchase additional food.

You might want to bring a light, collapsible chair to sit outside some of the breweries as they have limited seating. Most breweries will have either food trucks or a kitchen available if you would like to purchase food. Bring a small bag so you can safely store all your souvenir goodies. Bring snacks if you like for the bus rides in between. Bring your drinking shoes & smile b/c this is a blast!!!!

Note: Closed toe shoes are required on some of the brewery tours.

It's fun to see how things get made. It's even more fun when you get to taste the end product. That's the case with several area companies whose business is bottling goodness. Whether you're a beer snob or an oenophile (look it up), there are plenty of places to learn the craft and imbibe a little along the way.

Bombshell Blonde and Buried Hatchet Stout are just a couple examples of the brews you'll find at  Southern Star Brewing Co.  in Conroe. Production began at Southern Star in 2008 and has been ramping up ever since. The brewery does free tours and tastings each Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A few items such as t-shirts and glasses are also offered for sale. In 2009, Southern Star launched an annual Pro-AM (professional amateur) contest for home brewers. The winning submission's brew gets scaled up to be brewed on Southern Star's system.

Karbach Brewing Co.  is the brainchild of the founders of CR Goodman Distribution Co., the group responsible for bringing labels such as Sierra Nevada, Chimay and Dogfish Head into Texas. In 2008 the partners sold their Texas portfolio to build a brewery of their own. Names like Sympathy for the Lager, Rodeo Clown Double IPA and Weisse Versa Wheat promise to become household names in Texas' growing craft beer movement. Karbach offers tasting tours through the brewery on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays, noon to 3 p.m. The informal setting allows participants to hang out among the tanks as they're guided through the brewing process. Tours are $7.

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. , Texas' oldest craft brewer, took over a 100-year-old warehouse on the edge of Downtown Houston in 2010. That's where Saint Arnold makes 10 different craft brews and shows off its operation to thousands of visitors annually. Guests are able to explore the new biergarten-inspired space, sample brew in the tasting room, get a peek at the tank farm, and even host private events inside the facility. Tours and tastings are offered every Saturday at 11am and weekdays at 3pm. Admission is $7 which includes a logo tasting glass.

No Label Brewing Co.  in Katy has been providing tours since it opened its doors in 2010. The family-owned craft brewery produces a line of ales and lagers with names like El Jefe (a German Hefeweizen) and Pale Horse (an American pale ale). Tours and tastings are held every Saturday except the first one of the month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for those 21 and up. No Label is also dog and kid friendly. Paying homage to the famous Spindletop gusher which brought about the Texas Oil Boom, Spindletap Brewery is now open and booming with barrels of craft beer. The brewery, about 15 minutes northeast of downtown, features a taproom for guests to grab a seat, sample beer and take in a football game. Ten flat-screen televisions behind the bar and five more around the space means there is not a bad seat in the house.

Houston's Budweiser Tasting Room regularly serves up awesome free concerts, tastings, and even meet and greets with the world-famous Clydesdales. Stop by for one of their authentic beer tours.These eye-opening experiences allow you to follow the journey of making Budweiser from “seed to sip” as well as special visits to the Brew House, Lager Cellar, Packaging Floor and Finishing Cellar. The tours even include a sample directly from a Finishing Tank. Can't pick just one? Explore Houston's beerscape with Fresh Tap Tours. Avoid the hassle of driving and parking, or hailing a cab. Fresh Tap Tours offers a fun and safe way to sample the Houston beer scene, and its landscape, with a guided tour. Texas Beer Bus gives groups the opportunity to go behind the scenes of Houston’s best breweries, wineries, and distilleries, all while enjoying drinks in commemorative souvenir glasses. From the Woodlands to the Bay Area, the VIP tours cover all that Houston has to offer. 

The 100-acre  Messina Hof  estate in Bryan, Texas is home to one of Texas' most recognized wineries. Established in 1977, today the winery and resort (there's a bed & breakfast on site) boasts a full line of award-winning wines, from Riesling to Shiraz. Tours and wine tasting are offered seven days a week. The winery's calendar is also packed with cooking classes, wine appreciation classes, food and wine pairing seminars and winemaker dinners. Guests can stroll the picturesque grounds, have a bite to eat at the restaurant and even stay the night. The $10 tour price includes sampling of four wines.

What started in 1969 with an anniversary gift of grapevines from Gladys Haak to her husband Raymond has grown to a full-fledged enterprise. Today thousands of people turn out annually for a tour of Haak Winery . In 2000, Haak produced its first commercial wines and has since expanded to more than a dozen different varieties, from dessert wines such as Madeira to refined whites like the dry Blanc du Bois. Several Haak vintages have won major awards at international wine events. Tours ($5, which includes four tastings) occur daily, but calling ahead is recommended.

Yellow Rose Distilling invites Houstonians and visitors to toast a milestone: the first legal distillery in the city limits. The10,000-square-foot facility with tasting room is located adjacent to Uptown and Memorial Park, just north of Interstate 10. Founded in 2010, Yellow Rose Distilling locally produces four award-winning varieties of whiskey and a recently-launched vodka.  The distillery is open every Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.  The $7 admission price includes a sampling. One might not think of Texas as the location of a rum distillery. But the founders of  Railean Distillery  in San Leon, along the shores of Galveston Bay, have made a point of putting Texas rum on the map. Coined "the original Texas rum" Railean is an award-winner that comes in both a white and reserve, dark version. Each tour includes a discussion on the process, from sugarcane to fermentation and finally distilling. Tours and tastings are free but by reservation only, so call ahead.

Houston’s craft beer game has been around longer than today’s latest crop of legal drinkers, dating back to the year 1994, when the Patron Saint of Beers himself, Saint Arnold , shipped its first keg of beer. It was Texas’ first true craft brewery, igniting a flame and thirst for craft suds around the Lone Star. Today, new microbreweries are popping up at a rate that would be alarming if we didn’t love beer so much. There’s a lot to work through, from beer gardens to taprooms and everything in between. Now’s as good a time as ever to get yourself acquainted with some of them, here are the top players in the local Houston beer scene.

Astral Brewing

Space City is well represented at this hoppy, unassuming Northside haunt. Co-founder and head brewer Alex McDonald’s got a PhD in biochemistry, bringing his precision and undeniable smarts to the craft beer game. Bring your pup and settle in for playful riffs on classic brew styles and consistently great IPAs, from the hazy Northeast numbers to crisp AF West Coast versions. Great Heights Brewing Company

While it’s only been around for a handful of years, the neatly fermented ales from this GOOF-area spot are tried and true. Locals flock for the easygoing vibes and Blue Tile, one of the best IPAs in the game, plus its steady stream of newfangled numbers. You could easily lose track of time sippin' out in the yard or under the taproom’s twinkly cantina lights (spoiler alert: you will), so it’s a good thing they allow outside food and host the occasional food truck or two for sustenance. True Anomaly Brewing Company

This garage-dream turned ten-barrel, steam-jacketed, two-vessel brewhouse was founded by NASA employees, and you can kinda tell. Here, otherworldly explorations, wild-fermented, and sour suds share menu space with traditional Belgian, German, and French styles. It’s the kinda place where you can chase a hop-forward, fresh-from-the-tank West Coast IPA with citrus and floral notes (a.k.a. Ben's House IPA) with a pink-hued sour fruited ale spiked with raspberries and red currants (the Beryl after Beryl Markham, the first person to ever fly nonstop solo across the Atlantic from the UK to North America). No Label Brewing Co.

With over a decade under its belt, this Katy stalwart continues to live its best life. Its core fresh-from-the-silo lineup features a trio of heavy-hitters—including El Hefe Weizen, a classic German-style wheat ale rife with banana, cloves, and citrus; the heavenly Sittin' Sidehaze New England style hazy IPA; and crispy-clean 1980 Kolsch—but the team is also committed to adding new, exciting beers on the regular (like the three-way Astros collab with True Anomaly and Vallenson's). 8th Wonder Brewery

If any brewery was going to venture into the cannabis game , it’s no surprise that it was this hip, H-town inspired brewhouse. The spot oozes coolness with a fresh vibe and globe-trotting brews—from the Rocket Fuel, a Vietnamese coffee-infused Porter, to BrewGK, a seasonal candy apple Kolsch made in collaboration with local rap hero and former UGK member Bun B—plus new creations like the hemped up Wonder Water Herbal Seltzer line and a dedicated 8th Wonder Cannabis dispensary. The brewery taproom comes with a big ol’ yard (complete with local art installations, pop-up markets, and food trucks) and the whole shebang is a huge part of why EaDo has emerged as one of the coolest neighborhoods in town. Saint Arnold Brewing Company

You can’t talk about Houston breweries without mentioning the patron saint of craft suds, Saint Arnold. Even if it wasn’t the most established in the biz, this ‘90s baby is easily Houston’s baddest, continuing to earn its spot among Lone Star bests. Saint A’s sturdy selection of year-rounds and seasonals keep everyone coming back for more (and attending pub crawls around the city), while beer geeks are kept on their toes thanks to highly coveted specialty releases, including the barrel-aged Bishop’s Barrel and single-batch Divine Reserve series. The brewery got a major facelift a few years back, expanding its footprint to include a gorgeous indoor restaurant slinging Amber Ale Bratwurst and Fire Emoji Wings, plus a giant, partially-covered beer garden with outdoor taps, yard games, and skyline views. To boot, Superfine Hard Seltzer has entered the chat. Lone Pint Brewery

This eco-friendly outpost uses renewable energy, composts its hops, and recycles spent grain to feed a local dairy farmer's cows, which is all pretty cool. Perhaps the coolest thing about Lone Pint, though, is its beloved Yellow Rose IPA: a malty, fruit-laced number regarded as one of the tastiest beers in the state. A multitude of hoppy and quaffable Texas ales floods this joint’s refreshed beer garden, along with festive happenings including live music, pop-up markets, pub games like bingo and trivia, and weekend food trucks. Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co.

The rules are that there are no rules at this adventurous locale, which outgrew its first home on Nolda thanks to surging demand. Its newer, bigger digs are a three-story, 28,000-square-foot brewtopia in Sawyer Yards , where fans can score BuffBrews along with prime views of downtown and outrageous eats (i.e. Smoked Birria Nachos and homemade Haute Pockets). Said brews come in radical flavors that challenge everything you thought you knew about craft beer—think Smoke on the Bayou, a “bigass malt bomb,” made with malts smoked at local barbecue spots, or the crisp and crushable Key Lime Pie. In non-beer related but still important news, the brewery’s also entered the hard seltzer game (surprise, surprise). B-52 Brewing Company

This homegrown original considers itself less of a brewery and more of a laboratory, pumping out complex sippers in what appears to be the middle of the woods. With over seven acres in the great outdoors—plus cool additions like food trucks, ping-pong, and horseshoes—hanging at the brewery is a choice way to spend your time (kids and pets are welcome, too). Most importantly, it’s where you‘ll find B-52’s latest, limited-release tinkerings. Ingenious Brewing Company

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out this lovable company knows its stuff. The brainchild of two homebrewers with scientific backgrounds, Ingenious’ small-batch fleet proves that blending science with imagination (plus beer knowledge, passion, and a dash of hard work) results in some pretty outstanding brews. The air-conditioned taproom rocks 24 fresh, inspired drafts each day, harnessing offbeat ingredients to create tart fruited sours, hopped-up pale ales, and velvety pastry stouts. There’s also an outdoor beer garden and frothy “frozen beer toppers” to keep your brews properly frosted, and they’ll happily fill up crowlers and growlers to-go. Karbach Brewing Co.

Founded in 2011 and becoming a part of AB InBev’s craft-focused High End portfolio in 2016, Karbach’s stable of gargantuan brews is an undeniable powerhouse, earning the brewery a perpetual mention in any list of Houston essentials. What started as a passion project has turned into a sight to see, with an onsite gastropub, massive beer garden complete with a stage for live music, and shiny heavy-duty production facilities. Most refreshing addition to the Karbach scene? A killer Ranch Water hard seltzer. Eureka Heights Brew Co.

Named after the fault line that runs beneath the brewery, there’s no shaky ground at this neighborhood tour de force, just easy livin’... and even easier drinking. That’s thanks to a stronghold of crisp, approachable brews that pretty much everybody can get down with. Like many breweries before it, Eureka started out as a dream job for three homebrewers (one of whom cut his chops at Saint Arnold). And once their homebrews turned out tasty enough, the wives got on board and the Houston beer community quickly followed suit. Today, Eureka is a place for good beer and fun times, with year-round crafts (like the surprisingly light and sessionable cream ale, the Buckle Bunny) and bold new additions (try the pineapple and toasted coconut kissed Le Tigre Hazy IPA) available by the pint, taster, flight, and take-home crowler, plus goodies like trivia, steak nights, and monthly bike rides. 11 Below Brewing Company

With backgrounds ranging from oil and gas to theater, this group of passionate beer drinkers-turned-creators took a barebones warehouse and transformed it into one of Houston’s most sought-after breweries. These guys realize it’s basically always hot in Houston, so the focus here is on drinkable styles that both excite your palate and quench your thirst when it's 100 degrees outside. Grab regulars like the super sessionable 7-Iron Blonde or special and seasonal releases like the Duck Duck Juice hazy pale ale alongside food truck bites at the taproom or get ‘em to go via the drive-thru pickup. Spindletap Brewery

It’s been a boomtown ever since SpindleTap first opened its doors at the turn of 2015. Paying homage to Texas’ gusher age, the theme throughout this liquid gold purveyor is all things Lone Star State. The Experts Have Spoken: Houston’s 5 Best Breweries

Call us crazy, but we decided to contact 16 noted craft beer connoisseurs*—respected beer writers and community advocates with no ties to any local bars or breweries—and bring them down to the Houstonia offices, where they were not allowed to leave until they’d agreed on what our city’s best brewery was. The discussion—over beers, of course—covered such topics as consistency, innovation, variety, style, execution, and other considerations. Miraculously, consensus was achieved.

1. Saint Arnold Brewing Company

The oldest craft brewery in Texas also ranks as Houston’s most beloved. Since moving from an un-air-conditioned warehouse off Highway 290 into its spacious new facility—a former HISD food service warehouse, now renovated and welcoming—Saint Arnold has become even more innovative.

The larger facilities allow Brock Wagner and his team to create brand-new summer-perfect beers like the Boiler Room (a crisp, tart Berliner Weisse), increase production of its coveted Divine Reserve limited-run brews, and usher in its Icon series, creative interpretations of iconic beer styles such as Bière de Saison and Bohemian Pils.

2. The Lone Pint Brewery

Founded: December 2012 Tours: Saturday 12–4pm; $10 (includes souvenir glass and three 16 oz. pours) Best Beer: Yellow Rose IPA

Though it’s the youngest on our Top 5 list, this Magnolia brewery has had no small amount of impact since Heather Niederhofer and her brother Trevor Brown opened it in 2012, later joined by Heather’s then-boyfriend, now-husband Blake Niederhofer.

The team has already created one of the city’s best brews: a grapefruit-tinged IPA called Yellow Rose, which beer fans consume as fast as Lone Pint can brew it. And as it’s grown, the brewery has begun experimenting with other creations like Gentleman’s Relish, a brown ale, and fun projects such as the Zythophile series—beers made with a single variety of hops, like El Dorado and Azacca. For now, you can only find Lone Pint’s offerings on draft or at the brewery itself—but given its wild popularity, can bottling be far behind?

3. Karbach Brewing Co.

From the very beginning, it was clear they weren’t messing around: brewmaster Eric Warner had put in 10 years as brewmaster at Flying Dog Brewery in Maryland; his partners had founded a successful beer distribution company which they later sold to finance Karbach; and the sparkling new facility itself was stunning.

Only three years later, it is the second-fastest-growing brewery in the U.S., having produced over 8,000 barrels of Sympathy for the Lager, Weisse Versa, and Rodeo Clown—among other popular brews—in 2012 alone. Given Karbach’s spectacular growth curve (they produced just 674 barrels in 2011), its beers may soon be as ubiquitous as Shiner.

4. Southern Star Brewing

Founded: July 2007 Tours: Saturday: 2–10pm; free (includes one 16 oz. pour) Best Beer: Buried Hatchet Stout 

The appeal of this brewery? Its clearly-defined, straightforward products—Pine Belt Pale Ale, Buried Hatchet Stout, Bombshell Blonde Ale—and approachability.

Bombshell Blonde, in its iconic blue can sporting a blonde pin-up girl riding a WWII-style bomb, has been Southern Star’s calling card for many a moon now, thanks to its clean, crisp taste and that attractive packaging. And the brewery’s easygoing vibe extends to its free brewery tours, in which patrons are welcome to bring food, kids, even dogs to a weekly celebration of all things beer.

5. Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co.

While Southern Star’s appeal is simplicity, this young brewery courts the outrageous and eccentric whenever possible. Such a stance has gained Buffalo Bayou a huge following among fans of the unusual and odd.

Its beers—usually limited, and only available on draft or in bombers—have ranged from an apricot-flavored Belgian IPA to a red velvet stout, although the brewery does have a few year-round beers that have become local favorites: 1836, a “copper ale” that’s refreshing on a hot day, and More Cowbell, an American double IPA so popular it became the first Buff Brew sold in cans.

I took two tours - downtown city tour and city murals. Both were TERRIFIC and enjoyable! Some of the words I would use to describe them and the tours are: knowledgeable, detail oriented, professional, experienced, welcoming, fun, reliable and dependable, able to share interesting behind-the-scenes information, patient, flexible... and they go out of their way to be sure their customers enjoy themselves. The murals tour was a highlight of my trip to Houston! We stopped whenever I wanted to take a photo...and Marna suggested how to get the best angle.
