"We had our tour booked well in advance of our departure date.

It was going to be an absolute dream come true for us. But, soon after we booked our tour, we found out another dream of ours was about to come true: the birth of our first grandchild!

As it turns out, our daughter in-law was due to have a baby while we would have been in Italy! I called Collette and they gave us a full refund minus the cost of the travel protection. Italy can wait, but babies do not!

Since we did not lose our money, we can come back to book a new tour once our little miracle arrives. Thanks for having us covered, Collette!”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We’ve put together some commonly asked questions to give you more information about Coach Plus Insurance and the cover we offer. If you have a question that is not answered below please use the  contact us page .

Unfortunately, if you are on a trip and want to extend your cover we will be unable to do so. The policy will expire at the originally agreed date. The only exception to this is if you need to extend your policy following a change in travel plans as a result of the airline reduction and border closures.

In which case, you may extend the policy if:

  • it hasn’t expired
  • no claims have been made or are to be submitted,
  • there has been no change in medical conditions, up to 7 days.

However, only a maximum of 7 days will be granted and no further extension will be given. If you have a valid insurance claim the usual criteria applies, with regards to your insurance extended as part of the assistance case or travel delay after checking in baggage.

On a single trip policy, if you have had your trip dates moved and you are not making a claim, then you may transfer the insurance to the new trip dates.

If however there is a change of destination or additional duration then you will be charged the appropriate AP. If your health has changed you may need to rescreen or reconsider cover.

We would suggest that if you have not started that part of your journey you contact your Coach Operator to change your travel plans to move on to the next part of your itinerary. If you arrive at your destination and entry is denied due to the virus you should contact your Coach Operator to change your travel plans to move on to the next part of your itinerary.

On a Single trip policy, if you are offered an alternative destination and or dates from your travel agent, we will shift your insurance policy to fit the new trip without any administration charges, providing the new trip is for the same duration and to the same location or geographical area. Please call the customer service team on the number listed in your policy wording.

What happens if I lose my passport on a trip abroad?

Our coach travel insurance doesn’t cover the cost of a replacement passport or visa. What it does do is to cover the additional costs, such as travel and accommodation, of travelling to the nearest UK embassy or consulate to obtain travel documents in time for your return journey back to the UK.

What if I oversleep and miss my return journey?

Unfortunately, this is not something that our coach travel insurance covers.

What is the maximum duration for a single trip covered by your coach travel insurance?

The maximum single trip duration is 365 nights (please see policy wording for the full terms and conditions).

Does your coach travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Yes, this is covered as standard (please see policy wording for the full terms and conditions applicable to the cover.

Does your coach travel insurance cover cruises?

Yes, cruises are covered within the standard policy cover.

How far in advance can I book coach travel insurance?

Cover for trips can be booked up to a year in advance.

Do I need coach travel insurance?

If you are travelling outside of the UK, it is important to consider the unexpected, particularly around the risk of illness.  24/7 emergency medical assistance while abroad is an important cover to consider.

Coach travel insurance policies can potentially cover £1,500 for unexpected additional accommodation, repatriation and travel costs in the UK and £2 million for medical and additional accommodation, repatriation and travel expenses in Europe. If you’re not in the UK, medical costs are also covered.

What else should I consider when buying coach travel insurance?

Coach travel insurance companies may need you to declare pre-existing medical conditions, so it is always best to check when buying your policy.

What is excluded from coach travel insurance?

When buying a coach travel insurance policy, these are common exclusions:

  • Missing your journey due to oversleeping or other avoidable causes is not usually covered.
  • An additional premium might be required if you have pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Some travel companies will have an upper limit or increased premiums for older travellers
  • The cost of a replacement for a lost or stolen passport may not be covered. However, travel and accommodation costs to get to a UK embassy or consulate, to obtain travel documents to get back to the UK, usually are.

Note that if the cancellation is due to circumstances known before you purchase the policy or trip, you will not be covered.

As all coach travel insurance policies will be different, please check your policy documents carefully to make sure you are covered for your needs.

Wrightsure adds COVID-19 insurance for coach tour passengers

routeone Team

Insurance broker Wrightsure has launched a coronavirus COVID-19-specific travel insurance for coach tour operators. It covers COVID-19-related cancellations and other medical expenses for passengers and it is part of the existing Wrightsure Holiday Travel Insurance offering.

The new product has been designed for coach tour operators that are looking to offer clients additional reassurance and encourage them back to the industry. Protection is provided should a customer contract coronavirus COVID-19 either before their scheduled departure date and be unable to travel, or while they are on holiday and need to self-isolate or return home early.

Operators purchase the cover from Wrightsure and sell it to their customers. That potentially creates a new revenue stream, the broker says.

Adds Wrightsure Business Development Director Andrew Day: “Although coach tours are now starting to operate again, a full return to anything like normality will require consumers to have the confidence to travel. This new, ground-breaking insurance cover gives our coach operator clients the opportunity to offer their customers that necessary extra peace of mind.

“I’m really pleased to be able to add this new product to our existing range of specialist insurance products and services. Over the last 10 years Wrightsure has established itself as a provider of insurance to the coach holiday market, offering the widest range of product lines.

“That relationship with coach operators across the UK has meant that we’ve been able to design this new product knowing that it’s exactly what they need.”

Operators that wish to find out more should email Mr Day or call him on 07740 107942.

Charter and Tour Bus Insurance

Charter and tour bus companies are a reliable and efficient way to transport large groups of people. Whether it’s a school field trip, a wedding party, or an employee outing, charter, and tour bus companies offer an affordable and enjoyable way to get to and from your destination.

However, with the increased number of passengers comes an increased risk of accidents and injuries. Having the right is essential to protect your business and your passengers.

Charter and tour bus insurance is a specialized form of commercial insurance that provides coverage for operators of charter and tour buses. It protects both the business and its passengers in the event of an accident or injury.

Who Needs Charter and Tour Bus Insurance?

Charter and tour bus insurance is required in most states for any business operating a charter or tour bus. This includes companies that operate charter buses for school field trips, wedding parties, employee outings, airport shuttles, and other types of group transportation. This insurance is also required for companies that own, lease, or rent charter or tour buses.

Types of Charter and Tour Bus Insurance

This type of insurance typically includes liability coverage, physical damage coverage, uninsured motorist coverage, and medical payments coverage.

Liability coverage provides protection against claims of bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury caused by the negligence of the business or its employees. This coverage also protects against libel, slander, and copyright infringement claims.

Physical damage coverage protects the bus itself in the event of an accident. This coverage typically covers repairs to the bus, replacement parts, and towing expenses. It can also provide coverage for other vehicles involved in the accident.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage provides protection against the costs associated with an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. This coverage can also protect the passengers on your bus.

Medical payments coverage protects the medical bills of passengers injured in an accident. This coverage can also provide coverage for medical bills of the drivers of other vehicles involved in the accident.

Other policies might include cargo coverage, passenger legal liability coverage, and non-owned vehicle liability coverage.

Cargo coverage provides protection for the cargo you are transporting, such as luggage, packages, or other items. It can provide coverage for loss or damage due to an accident or theft.

Passenger legal liability coverage provides protection for passengers in the event of an accident. This coverage can provide coverage for medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses related to an accident.

Non-owned vehicle liability coverage provides protection for vehicles not owned by the business. This coverage is important for businesses that rent or lease vehicles for their operations.

How Much Does Charter and Tour Bus Insurance Cost?

The cost of charter and tour bus insurance varies depending on the type and amount of coverage you need. The size of your business, the number of buses you operate, and the number of passengers you transport will all affect the cost of your policy.

Charter and Tour Bus Insurance Requirements

Most states have legal requirements for charter and tour bus operators. These requirements vary from state to state, so it’s important to check with your state’s Department of Transportation for the specific requirements in your area.

In general, most states require charter and tour bus operators to carry liability insurance with minimum coverage limits. Additionally, most states require charter and tour bus operators to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

How Much Does Bus Insurance Cost?

There are many kinds of buses. Big buses, small buses. Buses for business, buses for personal use. How much your insurance costs depends on the size of your bus and what it’s used for.

Insurance for church buses, scout buses, and other non-profit organizations is relatively cheap. If you own one of these vehicles and it fits less than 16 passengers, expect to pay as little as $1,000 per year. Maybe less.

On the other hand, if your bus is registered for commercial use, your insurance will be more costly. This applies to airport shuttles, tour buses, charter services, and motor coach companies. How much you pay depends on where you live. The average rate for some states can be as low as $4,000 per year. Other states, like New Jersey, can have premiums of more than $35,000 per year!

But those numbers are on opposite ends of the spectrum. The 50-state average for commercial 15-passenger bus insurance is $9420 per year.

What Determines Your Rate

Your insurance agent will ask about you and your business to determine your rate. He’s looking for certain things.

  • Your location. As far as insurance goes, certain states are cheaper to live in than others. Bus operators who work in predominantly rural areas will see lower costs than those who work in urban areas.
  • How far you drive. Any bus that drives over an interstate route must follow federal rules, which are typically stricter than state laws and require more coverage. They are therefore more expensive.
  • The size of your bus. Buses that fit fewer than 16 passengers are classified differently than larger vehicles. Mini buses, bus limos, and small church buses regularly fit into this designation. It’s sometimes a smart idea to strip your bus of unused seats to help it qualify for one of those lower classifications.
  • Your age. Insurance companies typically charge more for anyone under 25. If you’re older than that, you’re in luck. Your rate will be less expensive.
  • Your driving history. The number of accidents you and your drivers have been in will be reflected in your price. Good drivers will obviously be offered a cheaper rate.
  • The value of your vehicle. A large, new motorcoach is worth more money than an older mini bus. This will be reflected in your price.
  • Your business type. Different businesses face different dangers. A charter service is very different from a party bus service. A tour bus and an airport shuttle cover different areas. There are different risks associated with transporting children versus transporting the elderly. Typically common carriers and school buses are more expensive to insure than private shuttles and personal vehicles.

The average cost of bus insurance coverages

A big way your bus insurance price is calculated is based on which coverages you get. Here we’ve given the average price of different coverages. On one end of the spectrum is insurance for private organizations like churches, scout troops, and bingo parlors with small 15-passenger buses. On the other end of the spectrum is the price for commercial charter services with big motorcoaches.

How to Get A Cheaper Bus Insurance Policy

Insurance companies want your business and they’ll fight for it. It’s smart to pit insurance agents against one another to compete for your policy. This way they offer you better coverage at a better price. We make this part simple. Fill out one free form and we’ll connect you with three bus insurance agents who will fight for your policy. Hire experienced drivers with clean driving records

Insurance companies are curious about your drivers. Do they have clean records? Do they have CDL experience? Have they ever been convicted of a crime? It’s important that you vet your drivers thoroughly ahead of time, so that you don’t hire on one who will make your insurance policy more expensive.

Pay a higher deposit up front

There are many ways to pay your premium. You can choose to pay month-to-month, but that isn’t the most affordable option. It’s cheapest to pay as much as you can at the beginning of the year. Insurance companies will give you a better deal if you do. Sometimes this can amount to as much as 20% of your overall price!

Maintain a good credit score

Insurance companies like business with good credit. It shows them that you will pay them on time. A good credit score will lead to lower costs.

Bundle your coverages

If you own a fleet of vehicles, insure them under one policy. If you require general liability insurance, bundle it with your auto liability insurance. If you need things like workers compensation and medical payments insurance, throw that in too. Insurance agencies can offer you discounts if you go through them for all your coverages.

Why Is Bus Insurance So Expensive

Compared to other types of commercial transportation, bus insurance doesn’t come cheap. And that makes sense. After all, you’re transporting very precious cargo. Your insurance policy will require things that other insurance policies don’t necessitate. This is mostly manifested in the form of medical payments insurance. If your passengers are hurt en route, this coverage will pay for their medical bills. Luckily, buses get into fewer accidents on average than most other vehicles on the road. And the best insurance is the insurance you never have to use.
