Liveaboard Diving in Similan Islands

What to expect on a similan islands liveaboard.

Liveaboards in Similan Islands will take divers to the most well-known dive areas in the amazing dive destination of Thailand . The Similan Islands are ranked as one of the top dive destinations in the world. Made up of 9 granite islands, located 100 km Northwest of Phuket and 65km offshore from Phang Nga Province in the Andaman Sea , the Similan Islands were declared a National Park in 1982 and offer scuba divers exceptional diving adventures. Similan Island liveaboards will visit dive sites that feature varied landscapes and vibrant marine life. Massive boulders, caves, reefs and passages are home to over 500 species of hard and soft corals and astonishing pelagic life. The East Coast boasts exceptional visibility and weak to moderate currents while the West Coast waters are deeper with stronger currents. With such varied dive sites, the best way to enjoy the Similan Islands is on a premier dive liveaboard.

Similan Islands Underwater

The landscape of the Similan Islands is a feast for the eyes both above and underwater. From the tropical white sandy beaches and clear blue waters to the granite boulders on land and underwater, it is a paradise difficult to surpass and understandably one of the most popular dive locations in the world. It is becoming ever more popular to take a dive safari on a liveaboard due to easy access to these remote islands. An abundant marine life roams the subterranean landscape of these islands. It is common to see leopard sharks, guitar rays, whitetip sharks, blue-spotted stingrays, clown triggerfish, rabbitfish, scorpionfish, snappers, emperor fish, giant trevally and angelfish. Turtles and giant bump head parrotfish make their appearances and the sharp-eyed diver may find tiny ghost pipefish, mantis shrimps, porcelain crabs or cleaner shrimp. To dive amongst the boulder formations and see their impressive size underwater is truly wondrous.

Dive Sites Of Similan Islands

Similan Liveaboard itineraries may vary but some popular dive sites include:

Anita's Reef on the east coast, just off Similan Island No.4 boasts impressive coral formations, boulders this subterranean landscape provides a sanctuary for a very diverse marine life. From hunting Bluefin trevally, yellowfin goatfish, blue damsels to the very common shrimp gobies, the easy currents allow for a great first dive option for most dive trips.

West of Eden , also known as West of Six for its location to the north-west corner of Island number 6, enjoys a healthy hard coral reef and massive granite boulders. Batfish, Turtles and Octopus are common residents to the reef. Through the rocky channels, frogfish, ribbon eels, giant morays and barracudas can also be seen. Keep an eye out in the blue for passing larger pelagics.

Elephant Head Rock , named after a rock that jets out of the water visible from the surface, this is the biggest pinnacle in the Similans and has some fantastic swim-throughs. A more challenging dive site due to strong currents, you may see white tip reef sharks, batfish, trevally and barracuda can often be seen on the perimeter of the boulders and the avid macro photographer can look out for smashing mantis shrimp, fire gobies, porcelain crabs and cleaner shrimps.

Donald Duck Bay , is a popular night dive spot on the north-west corner of Island no.8. Named after a rock resembling the cartoon character, this site is great for macro lovers. The boulders are home to emperor shrimps, red round crabs, decorator crabs, triton shells and cone shells, bull crabs, red octopus and cuttlefish and green turtles

Boulder City , is a large submerged granite outcropping, about 1km off the east coast of island no.3 with jumbles of boulders scattered around a flat sandy bottom. A slightly more advanced dive site, the current can sometimes bring the whale sharks and manta rays.

Shark Fin Reef - As is prevalent in the Similans, this dive site consists of another series of granite boulders covered in gorgonians and hard corals with a great diversity of marine life including the Napoleon wrasse, turtles, boxfish, clown triggerfish, schools of batfish, yellow goatfish, palette surgeonfish, blue-faced angelfish and bannerfish amongst others.

Honeymoon Bay lies to the northwest of Island 5. Its sheltered location, it is a popular place for boats to moor and include a night dive. This is when the Reef crabs, shrimps, lobsters, cuttlefish and nurse sharks all come out, leaving their crevices looking for food. With an average depth of 15-20 meters, the reef is decorated with hard corals, keep an eye out for shy garden eels on the sandy bottom.

Christmas Point , true to its name, is one of the most colourful, scenic dives in the islands on the far west side of Similan Island 9. This outcropping is home to several giant archways which provide superb topography and forms some of the best swim-throughs in the Similans.

Other dive sites include: Three Trees, Beacon Point, Breakfast Bend, Chinese Wall, Coral Reef, Deep Six, Hideaway, Deep six, North Point and Stonehenge.

Top Tips For Divers

Thailand liveaboard trips to the Similan Islands run from November through to May. The Islands are closed for the rest of the year. The end of February often sees an increase in currents attracting the larger marine creatures like whale sharks and manta rays. Visibility ranges from 25-40m during this period and water temperatures range between 26-29c. You may not need more than a 3mm neoprene shorty or full body wetsuit bearing in mind after a 3 or more dives a day, you may get cold. If you are bringing your own equipment, consider bringing a DIN adapter (if you have DIN regulators) as Thailand uses the standard yoke system.

Getting To Similan Islands

Please check your individual liveaboard itinerary carefully and be aware of different departure ports depending on your liveaboard chosen. Liveaboard cruises may depart from Chalong Pier in Phuket , Thap Lamu Pier in Khao Lak , Phang-Nga Province. Transfers to the port are provided from Phuket International Airport or your hotel. Please notice some liveaboards may even depart from one port and return to another, i.e depart from Phuket and return to Khao Lak. Some International flights fly directly to Phuket or you can get a connecting flight from Bangkok.

Similan Islands Diving : All You Need To Know

It is generally regarded that the best scuba diving in Thailand is to be found at The Similan Islands (which includes Koh Tachai & Koh Bon) and Richelieu Rock in the Surin Islands. Some people go by day trip, but Similan Islands live aboard cruises are for sure the best way to enjoy the more than twenty world-class dive sites. Scuba diving in Thailand has been very popular for many years, and takes place on both the east and west coasts of the country. The west coast adjoins the Andaman Sea & Indian Ocean, so this area has more exciting marine life and clearer water. There are lots of Similans liveaboards to choose from, and we have something to fit almost any budget and level of luxury. Trip lengths range from overnight (two days & one night) to more than a week at sea. Similan liveaboard diving can be enjoyed by all levels of scuba diver, from beginner to pro. Some dive sites are easier than others, though. For example, Koh Tachai Island is known for its currents, and Richelieu Rock diving is considered one of the best in the world, but is in open sea far from land. If you want to know more about how best to enjoy Similan Islands diving, keep reading.

Similan Islands diving is the best diving Thailand has to offer, but when referring to the Similan Islands we are including Richelieu Rock Thailand, and Koh Tachai Thailand. Visitors usually need to know more information before making a decision or booking. Common questions include the following.

How long are Similan liveaboard trips?

Overnight similan liveaboard trips.

2 Day 1 night liveaboard cruises are very popular, with a morning departure from Khao Lak & return to Khao Lak the next afternoon. Staying in Phuket is not an option for these trips. Divers get up to 6 dives at different locations.

2 night Similan liveaboard trips

Diving cruises of 2 nights may depart in the morning or evening, but always from Khao Lak. They normally either go to just The Similans, The Similans & Koh Bon, or just to the northern dive sites of Koh Bon, Koh Tachai & Richelieu Rock.

3 night Similan liveaboard trips

Diving trips that are 3 nights on a liveaboard may depart in the morning or evening just like the 2 night trips, but always from Khao Lak. They normally either go to just The Similans, The Similans & Koh Bon, or just to the northern dive sites of Koh Bon, Koh Tachai & Richelieu Rock.

4 night Similan liveaboard trips

The most-common trip length is 4 Day 4 Night liveaboard . They always depart in the evening, sometimes from Phuket, but usually from Khao Lak. These trips are long enough for guests to enjoy all of the best diving sites.

5 nights and more - Similan liveaboard trips

These longer trips enable every good dive site to be visited and some to be dived more than once. They depart in the evening from Phuket or Khao Lak, and give you the best of everything.

Trip lengths vary from short Similan liveaboard cruises of one night up to one week on board. 4 days & 4 nights is the most-popular length of Similan live aboard trip.

How much does a Similan live aboard cost?

Budget similan live aboard.

The cheapest trips are still a lot of fun and offer sufficient comfort. Share an air-conditioned cabin with like-minded travellers and enjoy lots of great food & fun. $170US/day & night is a good example of your all-in cost.

Mid-Range Similan live aboard

Between budget and luxury levels we have mid-range boats that have more privacy and space, including some en suite private bathrooms. These trips tend to have fewer divers than the budget boats when compared to the size of the vessel. Organisation is usually better, too.

Luxury Similan liveaboard cruises

The most-luxurious cruises pamper guests with larger cabins that have private bathrooms. Plus the boats have air-conditioned lounge saloons and the food and service is better than the less expensive options.

The price of your Similan live aboard will depend on several things. These include the length of trip, the level of luxury on the boat, and which kind of cabin you choose to stay in. Thailand scuba diving is generally regarded as among the best value in the world, considering all factors. Similan Islands liveaboard trips can be divided into three price/luxury groups.

Who can dive on a Thailand liveaboard?

Absolute beginners on a thailand liveaboard.

If you have never dived before, it’s a big commitment to learn while on a Thailand liveaboard. Although possible, we recommend learning to dive before going so far out to sea.

Novice divers on a Thailand liveaboard

Liveaboard trips are ideal to improve your skills and maybe do the advanced course. There will be experienced divers on the boat, but they will dive in other groups, and probably offer you some help and advice.

A Thailand liveaboard is ideal for experienced divers

Intermediate & advanced divers make up most of our Thailand liveaboard guests. They know what they’re doing and they know what they want. They can do the more challenging dives, but they still get a kick out of the easy dives, too

Professional divers also join Thailand liveaboards

Even diving professionals on vacation join our trips. They are excellent guests to have on board, and they often help out by pointing out some special species.

Scuba diving in Thailand offers warm clear water, lots of marine life, inexpensive accommodation options, and something for every level of scuba diver. For getting a scuba diving certification Thailand is extremely popular, but most of this is cheap PADI Open Water course deals on Koh Tao. Any level of certified scuba diver can join any of our liveaboard Similan Islands trips.

When is the best to go Similan Islands diving?

Similan islands diving peak season.

December to March is the best time of year to come, due to ideal weather and sea conditions. Manta Rays are more-commonly seen at Koh Bon in March than in any other month.

Similan Islands diving high season

November & April are still excellent times to enjoy Similan Islands diving, but the weather or sea may be slightly unpredictable.

Similan Islands diving at the start & end of the season

It’s possible to dive at the Similans during the final two weeks of October and the first two weeks of May. But sometimes the weather is overcast or rainy. Also, high waves or a lack of guests causes some trips to be cancelled.

Closed for Similan Islands diving

From May 15th-October 15th the national marine parks are closed to all public activity. It is against local law to go out to the islands during this period.

The Thailand diving season is all year round. But the better dive sites are usually located in national marine parks, which close during the months of the Indian Ocean monsoon.

Liveaboard Similan Dive Sites

The similan islands.

This area is a small archipelago of 8-9 uninhabited islands, a few of which have pristine sandy beaches. However, only two beaches are open to the public. Diving is possible by all levels of diver, and best enjoyed on a liveaboard Thailand cruise more than a day trip. Similan Islands diving is very good, but the northern sites are more exciting.

Koh Bon & Koh Tachai

These are two small islands north of the Similans. Most liveaboard Similan trips visit Koh Bon and sometimes Koh Tachai. Day trips are possible. Koh Tachai’s beach is closed to the public and Koh Bon has no beach. Manta Rays are often seen at Koh Bon. These islands aren’t ideal for novices, but Open Water divers with 20+ logged dives will be very happy.

Richelieu Rock

This offers the best scuba diving Thailand has. Millions of fish and other animals are there all year, and Whale Sharks are seen from time to time. For Whale Shark diving Thailand is among the best countries in Asia. Scuba diving in Thailand doesn’t get any better than at Richelieu Rock. Usually visited on the final day of a liveaboard Similian trip, Richelieu Rock diving is truly awesome.

For the very best scuba diving Thailand has to offer, it’s important to visit the top dive sites, and all of these are on the west coast, not far from the border with Myanmar. There are a few main areas, divided in different ways by different people. Officially, The Similan Islands National Marine Park contains the 8 or 9 Similan Islands, plus Koh Bon & Koh Tachai. And The Surin National Marine Park has the Surin Islands & Richelieu Rock. But most people in the business divide the area into ‘The Similans’ & ‘The Northern Sites’ (Koh Bon, Koh Tachai & Richelieu Rock)

Choosing the Best Boat

When choosing liveaboards Similans & the northern sites there are many options. It’s important to know which is most important to you out of the price, when you plan to go, & how long you want to be at sea. Plus what level of luxury is important, or how much luxury you’re prepared to sacrifice. All of our Similan liveaboard  boats' cabins are air conditioned, and they all include full-board accommodation. But some people want more luxury while others want to focus on the price. Use our date search feature to get a selection of trips then use the special filter to include only what’s important to you.

Where else to go for the Best Diving in Thailand

Thailand liveaboard diving isn’t restricted to The Similan Islands. There are some excellent dive spots on the other side of Phuket. Hin Daeng & Koh Haa are perfect for short Thailand liveaboard cruises. They are not far from Phuket & Koh Phi Phi diving sites. These trips, which include Koh Phi Phi scuba diving, are usually referred to as a Phuket liveaboard. Some people get confused about Phuket for diving and diving Similan Islands. Although Phuket has some good dive sites, they are normally visited on day trips. Phuket Airport is the main arrival point for Similan Island liveaboard guests. And this is why there is often confusion about where to go, stay, and dive at. From Phuket to Similan Islands can be done directly by boat, but is normally done by a land transfer to Khao Lak first. So, there are a couple of ways to get to The Similan Islands from Phuket but it’s important to check schedules, itineraries and ports/harbours before booking a hotel for or after your Similan liveaboard. Thailand diving is a wonderful experience, and it just depends on which factors are most important to you to choose the best trip.

Diving in Myanmar

Scuba diving in Thailand is easy, excellent and popular, but just over the border lies the Mergui Archipelago, in what used to be known as Burma. Myanmar diving trips tend to be a minimum of 5 days, and usually a week long. Although these trips are in Myanmar, they start and finish in Thailand, usually Ranong or Khao Lak. Diving Thailand is more popular than in Myanmar, but the latter is becoming asked for by our guests more every year. Many want to see a Manta Ray or Whale Shark, which is what this area is famous for. It’s important to make sure you’re aware of the visa requirements and diving permit fees to join these trips.

And of course, there is everything else that makes a Thailand holiday so enjoyable: beautiful beaches, rich history, bustling nightlife, and yummy food.

Diving in Thailand has become a big industry sometimes to the country’s detriment and let’s just say that you if have dived in places like Raja Ampat, Mexico, or the Maldives, diving here might not be the most exciting option for you. Luckily some exceptions will excite even more experienced divers: Koh Lipe and Similan Islands scuba diving.

You can read all about why I fell in love with Koh Lipe in this post here while this story is about diving in the Similan Islands, what makes it so incredible and how to plan your trip.

  • Route & Dive Sites in the Similan Islands

Thai flag and offerings on a liveaboard

Similan islands scuba diving is said to be simply the best in Thailand. The marine park hosts some dive sites that make divers hearts around the world beat faster. Those include Tachai, Richelieu Rock, and Koh Bon, an amazing macro dive site in the Surin Islands.

The marine park lies off the coast of the Andaman Sea, and you can reach it either from Ranong, Phuket, or Khao Lak. To dive in the Similan Islands, it is advisable to book a Similan liveaboard trip because they’re pretty far out, and almost impossible to reach on a day trip. Many liveaboard companies in the area, combine a trip to the Similan islands with Surin Islands diving.

tachai pinnacle dive site

Some of the most famous dive sites in the Surin and Similan Islands include Tachai and Richelieu Rock, a dive site that frequently tops charts as one of the best sites in the world.

The marine life in the Surin and Similan Islands is spectacular and includes something for every taste. In the right season, you can see mantas and whale sharks, as well as an array of colorful reef fish, schools of barracudas, snappers, and trevallies as well as some amazing macro critters like harlequin shrimp, ghost pipefish, and various nudibranchs.

liveaboards in the similan islands

The Similan Islands are in a national park that is open from October 15th to May 15th each year. Check before when your liveaboard is running as some may only start their journeys in November or already end in April. During the season the water temperature usually hovers around a pleasant 29 C degrees – at the most, you will need a 3mm wetsuit, many divers are happy with a shortie or a rashguard.

In case you are wondering what else to pack for a tropical dive trip you can find my complete liveaboard packing list here .

smiling seahorse liveaboard

I decided to treat myself to a birthday trip to go diving in the Similan Islands and for me, it was clear that a liveaboard was the only way to go. The Similan Islands are pretty remote and I don’t like to waste time on long transfers. I also appreciated that the Smiling Seahorse, the liveaboard I settled on after some recommendations, also includes the Surin Islands on their itineraries, which are less frequented but great for macro fans like myself.

The Smiling Seahorse offers various routes with the shortest one being 4 days & 3 nights – perfect if you are short on time or on a budget. They usually also offer trips to dive in Myanmar something I am keen to do in the future when they are back on their schedule.

various scuba fins

I did the North Andaman Cruise which departed Ranong in the morning heading straight to the Surin Islands. Here we did an afternoon dive at Koh Chi as well as a night dive. The next day we went to dive in the Similan islands with 2 dives at Koh Bon and 2 dives at Koh Tachai. One was a sunset dive – my absolute favorite! The final day saw 4 dives at Richelieu Rock which is considered Thailand’s best dive site!

Packages usually include:

  • Accommodation (on a twin share basis unless you pay single supplement) with towels and reef-friendly shower gel and shampoo.
  • All meals and snacks (they have an open snack bar basically), soft drinks, water, tea, and coffee as well as up to 4 rehydration salts per day.
  • Dives including a dive guide, 12 l tanks, weights, and weight belts. The number of dives will depend on the length of your trip.

Not included are alcoholic drinks, dive insurance, rental equipment, 15 l tanks, or Nitrox as well as a marine park fee of 2000 THB.

Scuba diver in similan islands

Most Similan liveaboards will either leave from Khao Lak, Phuket, or Ranong. The Smiling Seahorse departs from Ranong which is an easy destination to get to as they have an airport and the company can organize a pick up for you. Depending on when you leave you can either fly in early in the morning or the day before which is what I opted to do as flights at the moment are still a bit erratic and can change at a moment’s notice.

Find the best way to get to Ranong:

While Ranong is nothing to write home about there is enough to do and see to keep you entertained for a night or two. I stayed at the Day Inn which was incredibly cute and budget-friendly, and most importantly only a short distance from the Smiling Seahorse office. Check-in is usually done early in the morning when you settle all your paperwork at the Smiling Seahorse office before heading off to the pier where you will board your liveaboard.

boat from below at tachai pinnacle dive site

Alternatively I love the look of the Hidden Resort which looks like an absolute jungle paradise.

I can highly recommend Masaru Sushi Bar for a good sushi dinner or the FarmHouse which is considered the best restaurant in Ranong.

Note : At the moment you will need a doctor’s note in order to dive in the marine park, stating that you are in good health (which obviously implies – COVID free). You can get that at Ranong hospital or online but if you want to save yourself a lot of hassle and money I recommend you pop into the pediatrician’s office that is located next door to the Smiling Seahorse office. While I needed my Google Translate to tell them what I needed, it was a super quick check and they only charged me 50 baht.

cabin on the smiling seahorse liveaboard

The Smiling Seahorse offers a variety of cabins ranging from standard to deluxe cabins and suites. They either have a double bed or two twin beds and all of the cabins have aircon. The deluxe cabins and suites also have an ensuite bathroom and in boat terms, those bathrooms are mighty spacey and even have a proper window.

As it is with most liveaboards if you’re traveling by yourself, you will be teamed up with another diver in your cabin, unless you want to pay a single supplement. While the amenities are not as luxurious as a Maldives liveaboard , the cabins and all the common areas are well-equipped and super comfortable.

reef friendly shampoo

On the upper deck, you will find a couple of tables, as well as the counter where all meals are served, and a nicely stocked fridge where you can help yourself to cheeses and yogurts, sodas, and juices. There’s also an honesty fridge for bees and wine after your dive which are very reasonably priced, not a given for many liveaboards. My favorite was the unlimited snack basket as well as free rehydration packages in between dives.

Another favorite is the giant day bed area, which offers plenty of space to lounge, nap, and cuddle with the resident whale shark & shark.

stuffed toy shark

On the very top, you will find the sun deck with a hammock and loungers, which is also a great spot to watch the stars at night. The dive deck at the bottom in front of the cabins holds plenty of space for 16 divers, their tanks, and equipment. The amazing crew is always at hand to help you when kitting up and getting in and out of the water, especially the latter can be a bit precarious when the waves are high. But luckily, the crew will literally reel you in and give you a hand to get you back onto the dive platform. Luckily the ladder is fin-friendly!

Dive Sites in the Similan Island

Surin Islands

Unlike many other liveaboards, Smiling Seahorse also includes Surin Islands diving in their itineraries. They are less frequented than the Similan Islands and a paradise for macro life.

We started our trip at Koh Chi and the South Surin Bay where we did a night dive. There is plenty to see like nudis and other small critters like ghost pipe fish and my beloved frogfish (unfortunately I didn’t get so lucky).

ghost pipe fish at Richelieu Rock dive site

Mind you, you also have the chance to see bigger reef fish like bumphead parrotfish, barracudas, and if you get very lucky a manta or eagle rays.

Unfortunately, the visibility during our night dive wasn’t the greatest, and snow in the water made it hard to get good pictures. But when that happens do what I did and simply cover your torch (don’t turn it off but just shine it against your wetsuit) and play with the fluorescent plankton.

Koh Chi dive site

On day two, we headed to Koh Bon which is divided into Koh Bon Pinnacle and Koh Bon Bay, which has a beautiful reef.

The pinnacle is pretty much a deep dive as it starts at 18 meters so you should have at least an AOW or even a Deep Diver Speciality . We got plenty of warm and cold thermoclines going around and got lucky with some great visibility.

Fish at koh bon dive site

Between the rocks of the pinnacle, you will find an amazing array of nudibranchs and schools of fish but the highlight for us was an eagle ray as well as a few marble rays in the distance. Unfortunately, those preferred to hang out at 40 meters, making them inaccessible for most of us but it was still nice to see them from a distance. Another reminder, it pays up off to have a Deep Diver Speciality!

nudibranch at koh bon reef

If you get very lucky this is also a great place for mantas and even whale sharks and zebra sharks!

school of bat fish at koh bon reef

Our second dive at Koh Bon reef reminded me a bit of diving in Crete with plenty of interesting rock formations underwater. This part of the dive site reaches from 10 m down to 35 m and again, offers a chance to see mantas. Either way, you will enjoy big schools of reef fish (including another favorite of mine – batfish!), a coral head that is home to frogfish, and beautiful staghorn corals all around.

Koh Tachai quickly became my favorite dive site in the Similan Islands and consists of two pinnacles – the southern and the northern pinnacles, also called the 1st and 2nd pinnacle.

We headed to the 2nd pinnacle first which is a 50 m swim at 24 m to get to. It was worth the trip as we had the pinnacle to ourselves. While smaller than the 1st pinnacle it is a beautiful place starting at 18 m depth with lots of sea fans and corals.

diver behind coral fans at tachai pinnacle dive site

Our last dive of the day was a sunset dive at the 1st pinnacle and it reminded me just how much I love sunset dives – this is just the time when all the fish come out to hunt and play. This pinnacle starts at 12m, making it a suitable depth for beginners and also to keep a low profile at the end of an exciting dive day.

rocks and fish at tachai pinnacle dive site

I cannot even begin to describe the amount of fish and schools we saw – it was incredible! During sunset, you can just stay in one spot here and never get bored. That is until a Green Monster comes in (a murky thermocline that brought in cold water and chased the fish away) – it was slightly eery and also messed with our incredible visibility. Still, this is the dive in the Similan Islands I would do over and over again!

tachai pinnacle dive site

Richelieu Rock

Last but not least we headed to Richelieu Rock, the crowning jewel of the Surin Islands and often hailed as one of the top dive sites in the world. Many liveaboard trips in the Similan Islands will offer at least 3 dives here, we even did 4!

Richelieu Rock dive site

Richelieu Rock reaches from 5 m down to 40 m depth and the main rock is visible on the surface when the tide is right. Technically the dive site itself consists of a few rocks in a horseshoe shape. While I could have done with one dive less (and rather do another at Koh Tachai!) it was still worth it as the dive site is not super big and can get a bit crowded if there is more than one boat moored. We got lucky as we were first in the water and made our way directly to the home of the resident harlequin shrimp that live here.

bat fish at Richelieu Rock dive site

Other highlights can include frogfish, seahorses, ghost pipefish, and yes, even whale sharks. Mind you, even if you don’t get lucky there is always plenty to see and thanks to carpets of sea anemone and purple and white soft corals Richelieu Rock is an absolute beauty!

Life on Board: Similan Island Liveaboards Diving Safaris | Oceanic | Phuket

Life on board: similan islands diving liveaboard.

If you’ve never experienced a diving liveaboard, the idea of taking a Similan diving safari might be a bit daunting. In this article, we hope to dispel your fears, and explain why you’ll remember your first diving liveaboard for the rest of your life, and for all the right reasons!.

Imagine waking up in your own cabin, the water lapping gently a few feet from your window. Outside the sky is perfectly clear, and the sunrise is sublime. There’s a tropical island close by, one of the nine Similan Islands, and it is lush with dense jungle. The island is fringed by the most spectacular beaches you’ve ever seen, and completely deserted! At the end of the beach you can see massive granite boulders, piled on top of one another, like enormous pebbles, spilled out of the earth, and tumbling over one another into the water.

From the galley below, you can smell breakfast cooking… there’s a gentle knock on your cabin door, and a voice calls softly “dive briefing!”

Welcome to your diving liveaboard safari in the Similan Islands!

Sawasdee Fasai Similans Liveaboard Phuket

Sleep, Dive, Eat: the Rhythm of life on a Similan Diving Liveaboard

The diving liveaboard boats in the Similans are well designed to help you get a good night’s sleep. Gone are the days of everyone sleeping on the deck. Although, it is an option on many boats, to sleep on the sun deck, under the stars!

There’s an enormous variety of boats, and the facilities you can expect on board will depend on your budget. At the top end, you may have a balcony, or a large window, an en-suite bathroom, a mini-fridge and air-conditioning. At the most economical end you may be in a four-berth bunk cabin, with bathrooms shared between more than one cabin, relying on fans to keep you cool.

We wake early on the boat, ready for the first dive briefing of the day. A light snack will be waiting for you – fruit, toast, coffee, tea, juice – take your pick. The Tour Leader will give the dive briefing. Prepare to jump into the perfectly clear, warm water, and get your first view of the wonderland that is the underwater world of the Similan Islands.

As you come up from that first dive, the main breakfast will be served. On most Similan liveaboard boats the chefs offer their divers a choice of eggs, bacon, sausages, cold-cuts, cheeses, croissants, toast, fruit etc. (The choice available to you will depend on the boat, of course!)

During breakfast, there’s time to chat to your fellow divers and your dive guide about the first dive of the day. Your dive guide will help you to log the details of the dive in your log book. Other divers will be keen to share their photos and check out the photos that you and other divers took. Then you can continue the conversation, take a nap, stretch out on the sun deck, snorkel around the boat, read a book… it’s up to you to choose how you’d like to spend your surface interval!

Similans liveaboards Phuket The junk boat

… sleep, dive, eat, repeat!

One of the dive staff will ring the bell to summon everybody to the second dive briefing. Then you’ll be jumping into the water for your second dive of the day. After which you’ll be served lunch. On most boats you can expect snacks and cakes after the third dive, and then a buffet dinner after the fourth…

…and there you have the cycle – sleep, dive, eat, repeat!

We have much longer surface intervals on the Similan Island liveaboard boats than you may have come to expect on a diving day trip boat in Phuket. So, even with four dives in a day, the diving schedule feels beautifully relaxed on a Similan liveaboard safari.

Some days, the Tour Leader will be able to arrange beach visits for anyone interested. Don’t miss the opportunity to climb to the top of the boulders at Donald Duck Bay!

Donald Duck Bay viewpopint, Similan liveaboard

A well-organised liveaboard will have a dive schedule posted on a chalk-board or white-board, somewhere prominent. So everybody knows the time and location of the dives, meals and beach visits, in advance, throughout each day.

When is the Best Time to Dive in the Similan Islands?

The National Park rules mean that the Similan Islands are closed between 15th May and 15th October every year. That is because the Westerly winds during that time of year make the conditions there rough. October and May are the roughest months of the year. This is when the winds are changing, and they are the two months when we can get the biggest storms and the most rain. The weather settles down in November, and will remain mostly calm and dry all the way through to April.

Late December and January are the busiest times. So if you want to join a Similan Liveaboard during those months, book at least six months in advance.

February and March are the best months for sightings of manta rays and whalesharks, and they are also the months when the weather is most reliable.

Do I Need a Certification to Join a Diving Liveaboard?

Similan Diving Liveaboard Whaleshark

In short, if you want to dive in the Similan Islands National Park, you need to get scuba certified first. The islands are under the protection of the Mu Ko Similan National Park, established in 1982, and the law prohibits student divers from diving there. This is in an effort to save the delicate ecosystems of the reefs from damage by untrained divers.

Any dive operator willing to break the law, and take you diving there without a certification, is selling you short. Save your money, and take a snorkeling tour of the Similan Islands. You can join on any liveaboard boat as a snorkeler, and you will usually get a discounted rate!

But don’t think that you need to have 100s of dives logged to take a Similan liveaboard! On the right boat, with experienced dive staff, even new divers can have the trip of a lifetime. Let us know your experience level, and we’ll find the perfect boat for you.

Booking your Similan Island Diving Trip

Most of the liveaboard boats operating in the Similan Islands publish a schedule of trips many months in advance. Contact us as early as possible to get your places booked on the boat of your choice, because the good boats will get booked up fast.

Ask us about early bird offers if you’re booking at least 3 months in advance.

Booking your place is easy: check out our choice of boats , and use the contact form on our Liveaboards web page or send us an email .

Scuba diving in Similan and Surin Islands

  • Book a liveaboard trip and explore the famous Similan Islands
  • Encounter manta rays at Koh Bon and Koh Tachai
  • Dive the famous Richelieu Rock in search of whale sharks and more

Similan Islands diving is renowned for its clear blue waters, spectacular marine life and stunning landscapes, above and below the waves. Located 65 kilometers off the coast of Phang Nga province in southwestern Thailand, the islands are easily accessible by liveaboard diving safaris or day trips from Khao Lak. The Similan Islands’ beautiful, white sand beaches and abundant tropical wildlife, along with the spectacular pinnacles of Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock, are the perfect combination for anyone seeking adventure and exploration.

Diving in the Similan and Surin Islands

The world-famous diving of the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock has drawn divers from around the world for decades and is considered to be the best in Thailand. The variety of underwater landscapes, rich marine life, clear water, and of course the beautiful island landscapes, are ideal for anyone in search of an exhilarating dive safari.

The underwater landscape of both groups of islands offer everything from rock formations, swim-throughs, steep walls, bommies, and towering rocky pinnacles, all covered in bright corals, sea fans and schooling fish. Around the Similans in particular, the coral gardens and deep rocky gorges are perfect for exploration and offer even experienced divers plenty to discover. Famous sites such as Elephant Head, Christmas Point, East of Eden and Shark Fin Reef offer opportunities to see a wide variety of marine life such as turtles, anemone fish, moray eels, stingrays, pufferfish, lionfish, batfish and occasionally larger species such as barracuda, trevally, leopard sharks and Napoleon wrasse.

Diving Koh Bon and Koh Tachai

If it is big animals you are looking for, then the islands to the north of the Similans - Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Richelieu Rock and the Surins - are the places to explore. Koh Bon is the site of one of the only wall dives in Thailand, and is well known for manta rays that are seen along the ridge that runs west from the island, or in the deep water to the south. A pinnacle to the north of the ridge is also great for encounters with rays, and leopard sharks are also seen in the deeper sections. Nearby Koh Tachai’s pinnacle is also a great spot for manta rays, and plenty of schooling fish. Both of these islands are quite exposed and can have strong currents so beginner divers have to be cautious.

Diving Richelieu Rock

However it is the famous Richelieu Rock that offers the best diving on the west coast of Thailand. This isolated pinnacle of rock emerges from deep water, breaking the surface of the sea at low tide. The site has become famous for its rich coral, prolific marine life and for being one of the best locations in Thailand to spot whale sharks. Nutrient-rich upwellings create perfect conditions for plankton blooms that in turn attract plenty of fish, including the biggest of all. Whale sharks are most often seen at Richelieu towards the end of the season, from February through to May - April being one of the best months for encounters. But even without the whale sharks, Richelieu Rock is an exceptional dive. The horseshoe-shaped site consists of a huge central pinnacle surrounded by smaller rocks, every inch of which has been colonised by something - soft corals, anemones, barrel sponges and sea fans. Schools of reef fish surround the pinnacles, big groupers and barracuda cruise by and there are smaller creatures to be found in every nook and cranny of the site.

Top tips If you are interested in wreck diving, the Boonsung and Seachart wrecks can be dived on day trips out of Khao Lak. Khao Lak has a surprisingly wide range of places to eat - apart from the many Thai options, there are Indian and German restaurants, great Italians and some really good bakeries selling tasty pastries. The nearby Khao Sok National Park is worth a visit to explore the spectacular karst landscape and ancient rainforest.

About the Similan and Surin Islands

Named after the Malay word for nine - Sembilan - the Similans are a collection of nine rugged islands that are known by both their names and numbers. First designated as a National Park in 1982, the protected area was expanded in 1998 to include the neighbouring islands of Koh Bon and Koh Tachai - famous for manta ray encounters and other marine life. Further north towards Myanmar lies the world-famous Richelieu Rock and the Mu Ko Surin Island Marine Park, another protected area that has become a magnet for divers who travel to the park in search of the biggest fish in the sea - the whale shark.

Both the Similans and Surins are characterised by huge granite boulder formations that tumble down into the sea, gently sloping coral reefs, and a number of submerged pinnacles that form dramatic underwater seascapes. With their beautiful beaches, lush jungle hillsides and a huge array of marine species, the islands are a playground for those in search of an unforgettable adventure experience, both above and below the surface of the water.

Getting to Khao Lak

The small coastal town of Khao Lak is the gateway for liveaboard safaris and day trips to the Similans and Surins.

From Bangkok there are daily flights to Phuket or Krabi Town with Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and Air Asia. You will then need to arrange a taxi or bus to Khao Lak. Depending on your accommodation or dive centre, most can arrange these details as part of your package. There are also direct busses, or a combination of train and bus from Bangkok to Khao Lak. From both Phuket or Krabi you can arrange for a private taxi, mini-van or hourly local bus service to Khao Lak. Khao Lak is located about an hour drive from Phuket airport, and once in town, it’s 15-30 minutes to the pier at Thap Lamu. Divers and snorkelers are usually picked up at their Khao Lak accommodation or meet at the dive centre for a group taxi ride to Thap Lamu.

Where to stay

There are no resorts on the Similan or Surin Islands. The park authorities used to offer small bungalows and tents for overnight stays on several of the Similan Islands, however they recently announced a ban on overnight stays to help protect the environment. That said, the best way to explore the Similans and Surins is by liveaboard safari out of Khao Lak, the closest port on the mainland. This small town has become a well-known tourist spot and gateway to the islands and there are plenty of different options for accommodation and dive centres, ranging from budget backpackers to luxurious boutique hotels.

You’ll most likely need a night in Khao Lak if you are heading out to the Similan and Surin Islands, and ZuBlu can help you book both your liveaboard and a hotel prior to the trip.

Similan Islands dive seasons and weather

The Similans National Park is open from mid-October through mid-May and the most popular time to visit is in December and early January during the holiday season. However, in late-February to mid-March there is very little rain and the water is typically very calm, so the diving can be fantastic. Temperatures start to rise, but the seas are very calm and the evenings are nearly perfect!

Weather is a major factor in the life of these islands. Afternoon thunderstorms and showers occur almost year-round but during the dry season - November through April - this is a welcome respite from the warm days. The Islands themselves receive only one third of the rainfall that the mainland gets and storms that can affect the conditions normally only occur at the beginning and end of the season as the weather patterns begin to change. The park is closed during the annual monsoon from May to October.

THE SIMILAN ISLANDS DIVING HIGHLIGHTS

These world-famous islands stretch north-south in the Andaman Sea, 30 miles off the coast of southern Thailand . Covering an area of approximately 87 square miles, the nine islands of the archipelago, plus Ko Bon and Ko Tachai to the north, make up the  Mu Ko Similan National Park .

The real draw here is the manta rays and whale sharks that visit the warm waters from December until April each year. Outside these months diving is still spectacular, however, with medium-sized species patrolling the bustling reefs, and plentiful macro hiding amongst the beautiful hard corals . Liveaboards in Similan Islands really do offer an amazing scuba diving experience.

Thailand

THE SIMILAN ISLANDS LIVEABOARDS

The Similan Islands National Park was closed to tourists in October 2016 due to the impact of huge numbers of day-trippers, but reopened two years later and has a current cap of 3,325 visitors per day. All tourist accommodation on the islands is now closed, except for a few park-managed tents and bungalows. In addition, access to three of the islands is restricted to protect nesting turtles, and one is privately owned. As such, a Similan Islands liveaboard is the most comfortable, and by far the most convenient way to access all these intriguing islands have to offer.

Between December and April each year, manta rays and whale sharks stop-off on their migration to feed in the Andaman Sea’s plankton-rich waters. Individuals will often stick around for several weeks, and can regularly be sighted around the outer reefs and atolls.

1. RICHELIEU ROCK

Fifty-five miles north of the similan islands, the lonely pinnacle of richelieu rock attracts a wealth of marine life to its spectacular corals. this site is regarded as the best dive in thailand, due to the great diversity of marine life appearing in vast numbers. the rock’s isolated location makes it a magnet for pelagic giants such as whale sharks and mantas, as well as tuna, barracuda, trevally, and turtles. schooling snapper and glassfish create a constant ebb and flow of movement above the dense coral reefs, which in turn hide octopus, squid, moray eels, and some superb macro..

Find out why we think Richelieu Rock is one of the world's best dive sites .

2. KOH TACHAI PINNACLE, KO TACHAI (Island 11)

In the furthest reaches of the national park, Koh Tachai Pinnacle is an exciting and challenging site best suited to intermediate and experienced divers. The dive centers around an open-ocean pinnacle and is the best place to spot passing mantas and whale sharks, as well as barracuda and trevally hunting above the granite rocks.

3. KO BON WEST, KO BON (Island 10)

This island’s limestone walls are coated in a patchwork of colorful soft corals, and a myriad of macro can be found sheltering from strong currents in the cracks and crevices. Ko Bon West is a favorite cleaning station for manta rays, who visit in the late afternoon to rid themselves of pesky parasites.

4. CHRISTMAS POINT, KO BANGU (Island 9)

Located on the northwest edge of Ko Bangu, a collection of large boulders and quirky rock formations create exciting swim-throughs and tunnels in an incredibly scenic dive. The rocks are covered in soft corals and sea fans, and a coral garden of immense pore and staghorn corals can be found in the shallower waters. Expect to see the resident school of bluefin trevally, giant sweetlips and grouper in the swim-throughs, and firey goby amongst the coral.

5. DONALD DUCK BAY, KO SIMILAN (Island 8)

This is a great macro site on the main island, and the shallow bay offers up some fascinating critters around a comically-shaped rock. Especially good for night dives, expect to spot plenty of octopus and cuttlefish as well as any number of crabs, shrimps, and other crustaceans.

6. ELEPHANT HEAD ROCK, KO BAYU (Island 7)

Sitting around a mile offshore, the ocean swell and currents around Elephant Head Rock make it another site suited to more experienced divers. The dive itself is a fascinating maze of boulders and caverns, creating hiding places for all manner of species from curious moray eels, to boxer shrimp, octopus, and the spectacular yet sinister lionfish.

7. WEST OF EDEN & DEEP SIX, KO BAYU (Island 7)

These two sites merge at the northwestern tip of Ko Bayu and are perhaps the most iconic of the Similan Islands’ dive sites. Showcasing the rich and diverse marine life of the Andaman Sea, West of Eden’s large boulders are covered in sea fans, beautiful anemones, feather stars, tube sponges, and soft coral. This gives way to the sloping reef and deeper walls of Deep Six, where pinnacles and rock clusters create a stunning backdrop. Expect to spot rays, moray eels and turtles, pelagics such as dogtooth tuna and giant trevally, and all manner of critters such as frogfish, shrimp and nudibranchs.

8. SHARK FIN REEF & BOULDER CITY, KO PAYAN (Island 3)

Just over half a mile (1kilometer) offshore at Ko Payan, Boulder City is an advanced site of large granite outcrops and huge boulders scattered across a sandy bottom. It leads round to Shark Fin Reef where further boulders and drop-offs create an exciting site. The brisk currents bring big pelagics such as mantas and whale sharks close in, and huge numbers of reef fish can also be spotted amongst the huge gorgonians and hard coral formations.

Travel Information

How to get to the similan islands.

Several airlines fly from the US to Thailand’s Phuket International Airport (HKT) with a layover in Europe or Asia. Once in Phuket, it’s a 90-minute drive to Khao Lak to pick up the liveaboard.

How to Dive THE SIMILAN ISLANDS

The National Park is open from mid-October through to mid-May, and the dive season runs accordingly. Liveaboards generally visit for 4-nights or 7-nights, and some combine a longer trip with a visit to the nearby Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock. Boats tend to depart from Khao Lak on the mainland, but there are also departures from Ranong and Phuket.

There is a wide range of liveaboard options, from modern motor yachts to a traditional junk . Trips range from laid-back and budget-friendly through to the more luxurious boats of the Aggressor fleet, and everything in between. Meals are often cooked by local chefs, and they are in a Thai style but cater towards western tastes.

Most boats will run 4 dives a day, including one dusk or night dive. There is also the option to snorkel between dives, and the possibility of a land-based excursion to explore the top-side wildlife.

Some Similan Islands trips also include diving in Myanmar , a unique and rarely visited destination.

OTHER THINGS TO DO IN THE SIMILAN ISLANDS

Most liveaboards will offer at least one land excursion to visit the islands’ tropical interiors. There are many nature trails and viewpoints, and some migratory birds found nowhere else in Thailand can be spotted. The white sandy beaches will take your breath away, and are perfect for an afternoon’s relaxation.

I went on a group trip to the Similan and Surin Islands in February of 2017 on the Junk liveaboard. The trip was a really great price, the dive liveaboard was clean and met basic necessity, and the food and the crew were really great. Overall, I would say that the wildlife in Thailand is very plentiful, although I would not say any of the dive sites particularly blew me away compared to other destinations except for a few: Richelieu Rock, Koh Bon, Hin Daeng, and Hin Muang.

Many of the sites on the Andaman side of Thailand had very interesting underwater structure -- huge boulder reef structures spotted with cup corals -- that were very unique to the dive destination, but not necessarily worth the price of the trip alone. However, the 4 dive sites I listed above were absolutely amazing, and these 4 dive sites alone made the entire trip to Thailand worth it, despite some of the other sites being slightly lackluster.

The pinnacles were covered in abundant soft corals that housed numerous nudibranchs playing hide and seek (spotting nudibranchs is one of my favorite scuba diving activities), surrounded by large schools of fish (both over the reef and in the blue), and sheltering abundant seahorses and cephalopods! I could've stayed on those locations to dive for all 10 days, they were so full of life and so vibrant and colorful.

To top it off, I stayed in Thailand for a few extra days to explore the area on land, and spent a few days traveling in Cambodia, as well. The region is so rich with culture and history -- combining these land activities with the beautiful diving made for one of the best trips for the price that I've taken! Don't forget to travel with your best dive buddies to make the trip irresistible:)

Similan Islands Thailands Best Islands

Similan diving.

In the recent decade the Similan Islands have lost a lot of its pristine character, mainly due to overfishing and global warming. But they still offer interesting and exciting diving, are home to thousands of species, some of them endemic, and continue to amaze divers with their dramatic underwater landscape and marine megafauna.

The combination of steady and predictable weather and sea conditions with visibilities constantly ranging around 30 meters / 100 feet and the highly developed and modern infrastructure on mainland as well as the abundance of dive centers and diving boats makes it still one of the worlds top diving destinations.

There are places where the diving is better, but these places are a lot harder to get to and it is generally a lot more expensive to dive them. Especially for scuba divers in the experience group of zero to 100 dives, the Similan Islands can offer exceptional satisfying scuba diving. Very experienced divers still like the predictable and easy conditions, the landscape as well as the easy access. Phuket Intl. Airport is just a 45 minutes taxi drive south of the main departure port Tap Lamu. Similan liveaboard cruises alway include a day at the famous Richelieu Rock which still undoubtedly ranges in the Top 10 dive sites of the world and offered regular whale shark sightings in 2014.

Current Similan Diving Conditions

19. Jan 2015: Since 2012 the Similan Islands see a phase of cold water upwellings from the deeper ocean, providing excellent conditions for coral growth and marine megafauna appearance. The shallower reefs above 10 meters / 30 feet are still affected by the 2010 coral bleaching event, but below 15 meters / 45 feet, the corals are healthy, diverse and fast growing. It is therefore advised to visit the underwater realm of the Similans with scuba gear as snorkelling can be somewhat dissapointing.

Day Trips vs Liveaboards

If you have the choice, the definite anser is: Liveaboard! There is an array of reasons, starting with the price per dive, the value for money, the visited dive sites and the general operation. If you have only time for one or two daytrips, forget the Similan Islands themselves and head up north to either Koh Tachai or Richelieu Rock as these two dive sites offer the healthiest coral reefs and the highest chance of encountering marine megafauna.

The Similan Dive Sites

Anitas reef.

The easiest of all dive sites is located on the eastside of Islands #5 & #6. A gentle sloping reef with sandy bottom streches approximately 300 meters from south to north with some dramtic granite boulders on the southern end. Don’t spend too much time in the shallows and seek the deeper parts around 20 meters / 60 feet. Interesting species here are the garden eels, the longnose hawkfish, cruising tunas and trevallies, giant moray eels and kuhls stingrays. Pygmy pipehorses have been found on the southern part at a depth of 18 meters.

West of Eden

The first highlight and one of the best dive sites in the Similan Islands itself, West of Eden is the rocky western part of Island #7 where abundand healthy hard and soft coral gardens as well as huge fan corals await you in the deeper parts of the dive site. Spearing and boxing mantis shrimp are hunting their prey while hawskbill turtles are swimming next to the reef in search for food. Schooling fuseliers and goat fish make prey for some bluefin trevallies, you can also spot your first spiny painted lobsters and some clown triggerfishes. Watch your no-deco time as the most beautiful parts of the reef are well below 25 meters / 75 feet.

The rocky northern tip of Island #7 is exposed to tide currents and the outcropping rocks create confusing whirls. This brings excellent conditions for a lot of species, white tip reef sharks are cruising off the north tip around 35 meters and some deep coral patches hold surprising density of life. Watch out for currents!

Elephant Head Rock

Located right between Island #7 and Island #8 this stack of boulders is very exposed to tides, waves and currents. Although the main attraction of this site is the breathtaking setup of huge granite boulders stacked on top of each other, the marine life doesn’t dissapoint either. McCoskers flasher wrasse, porcelaine crabs, sea moths and various blennies are just some of the hosts in the deeper coral patches. Dramatic swim throughs full of sweetlips, snappers and soldier fish have to be passed to get onto the north side where sometimes megafauna species circle around.

Turtle Rock

Usually done as a sunset or night dive on day one of a diving safari, this site is located just off Donuld Duck Bay on Island #8. The convenience of beeing nearby a sheltered anchor place for the boat is the main reason for it to be on any cruises schedule, though recently a pair of black frogfish have been found in the shallow parts.

Christmas Point, North Point & Breakfast Bend

Usually chosen as first dive on the second day of a liveaboard cruise, these dive sites aren’t very special, apart from the reason that they lay on the northernmost point of the Similan Islands chain. The shallow reef at a depth around 5 meters / 15 feet used to be one of the best snorkeling reef of the world, but at the moment it shows nothing but dead coral plus a reasonable quantity of reef fish. Octopus, hawskbill and green turtle can be seen here amongst some schooling barracudas. The morning light gives plenty of opportunity for some good underwater photography. The deeper parts are, like most of the similans, in reasonable good condition, but you don’t want to spend too much time there because the cruise will continue to..

Unlike most popular places to learn scuba diving in Thailand, the Similan Islands offer many marine creatures to bee seen during training dives what makes students often forget, that they are participating in a diving course.

Who to book with – The best Similan Dive Centers

Similan diving day trips, the history of the similan diving industry, the early years.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s the first divers were exploring the Similan Islands mainly on chartered and private leisure boats. In the late 1990s the first scuba liveaboards visited the islands on a regular basis. Among them a handful of five-star luxury steel boats and already a few local wooden liveaboards which were mainly converted former fishing boats.

Around the 2000s the diving industry saw its first peak with daytrip speedboats departing directly from the lively Khao Lak beaches and an increased number of Phuket operated liveaboards. 1999 the first diving centers were opened in Khao Lak by a number of german, english and swiss expats and the traditional wooden local boats started to dominate the scene.

After the Tsunami

After the Tsunami the diving industry faced a very hard time which lasted only a short while because in 2005 many divers were willing to return back to find the divesites, though affected by the tsunami in several ways, but the marine life and diversity still blooming and amazing as ever.

From then on “backpacker liveaboards” was the main market segment, with very few options for more demanding divers left. The former premier liveaboards (namely the OCEAN ROVER, the MERMAID and the ANGGUN) left the area for Indosiean diving grounds after the Tsunami and the increase of local boats and number of divers in the water.

The Coral Bleaching Shock of 2010

In the summer months of 2010, a backdraft of El Nino (also know as La Nina) hit the Andaman sea with water temperatures around 34°C for several months. As a result almost 95% of the corals in 0 to 15 meters depth bleached and eventually died.

The first divers who jumped into the water middle October 2011 couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the snow white bleached reefs. Especially the shallow snorkel reefs of Breakfast Bend, North Point and Anitas Reef presented a sad sight all in white and nearly no reef fish. In the following months the white color disappeared as the dead coral were overgrown by algae.

Surprisingly the diving industry saw no effect on tourist numbers at this point. Only the experienced divers who dived the Similans before started to avoid these dive sites. Novice divers still came in great numbers taking advantage of the perfect learning conditions as the waters were still crystal clear and Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock seemed nearly unaffected by the bleachings.

The Current State – Recovery and Big Fish

Beginning of 2012 cold water upwellings from the deeper part of the oceans started to reach the reefs providing good conditions for new coral growth and by the end of 2012 young coral colonies used the old dead structures as their perfect new growing substrate to give life and color to the Similan Islands underwater realm once again.
