Egypt Passport and Visa Requirements for Indian Travelers

Passport  – Everyone who visits Egypt, including Indian nationals, must be in possession of a valid passport. Your passport should also have at least one blank page, and it must have at least 6 months validity remaining. If you are planning on booking one of our multi-destination Egypt tours from India, you will need at least one blank page in your passport for each country featured in your chosen tour itinerary.

Visas  – At the time of this post being written, people who are traveling on an Indian passport are not able to apply for a Visa-On-Arrival in Egypt. They also cannot apply for an online Egypt e-Visa. In other words, if you will be traveling on an Indian passport, you will have to apply for your Egypt tourist visa at an Egyptian embassy or consular office in India.

In addition to passport-sized photos and your visa application form, you will also be asked to submit a number of other supporting documentation. For example you will need to provide a copy of your bank statement showing that you have sufficient funds to support yourself while you are in Egypt. You may also be asked for a copy of your planned tour itinerary and etc.

When you book one of our Egypt tours from India, we will of course send you your detailed tour itinerary. This will include a list of any and all hotels that you will be staying in during your Egypt trip from India. We will also assist you in any way we can with your visa application.

Passport and Visa Requirements

Despite what you might read on some websites, Indian nationals cannot obtain a visa on arrival in Egypt . If you are considering Egypt tour packages from India, you will need to apply for a tourist visa at any Egyptian consulate or embassy in India prior to traveling to Egypt. This can be done either in person or through a visa agency.

Tourist visas are valid for a period of 3 months as from date of issue and they allow you to remain in the country for up to one month as from your date of arrival. If your chosen tour includes a visit to neighboring countries, you will require a multiple entry tourist visa. This will allow you to leave and re-enter the country as many times as you want prior to your tourist visa expiring.

As of February 2014, visas for Indian nationals cost INR 2,900 for a single entry and INR 4,000 for a multiple entry. As is the case with many countries, you may be refused a visa if your passport is valid for less than six months after the date of your intended stay, and your passport must have at least one blank page.

In order to be considered for the above mentioned visas, applicants also need to submit the following documents when they apply:

• A cover letter stating the purpose of visit
• One Copy of the identification pages of the passport
• Visa Application Form completely filled out and duly signed (Print out and photocopy are accepted)
• Two recent photographs (3.5x 4.5 cm) of the applicant (preferably not older than 3 months)
• Confirmed return air ticket or proof of onward journey
• Detailed tour itinerary
• Proof of finance (Credit Card Statement; Bank statement  covering the last six months)
• Copy of income tax returns from last three years
• A complete list of all hotel reservations in Egypt as a proof of accommodation.
• A letter of leave approval from the employer

EXCEPTION: Indian nationals arriving in the country at Sharm El Sheikh; St. Catherine or Taba airports can enter Egypt without any visa for a period not exceeding 14 days. During this time, you are not permitted to travel outside of the Sinai Peninsula region.

NOTE: If you book your Egypt vacation  or Nile cruise through us, we can send you an invitation letter once you have confirmed your tour and paid your deposit. This can be a big help when you apply for your visa, particularly if you don’t meet some of the above criteria.

The best way to describe Egypt’s weather would be to say “Hot & Dry” but just like any other country, there are seasonal changes. The coolest months of the year are from October  to April , and as a result, this is also the high season.

The hottest months are from May  to September , and for many people, and especially those who come from cold countries, the extreme heat can be unbearable in most parts of the country. During these months tourist numbers – and tour prices – fall dramatically.

Q. How to get a tourist visa to Egypt? A. You need to get an approval for the same from either the Egypt embassy in New Delhi or the consular office in Mumbai. There is no provision for e-visa for Indians. The visa application along with the supporting documents need to be submitted to the consulate or embassy between 09:30 am and 11:00 am. You can even have this done by an agent by providing him with a valid authorization letter. The documents required to get a tourist visa to Egypt include two passport size photos, a completed visa application form, your income tax returns for the past three years, a covering letter, return air tickets, bank statement for the past 6 months with a minimum of INR 50,000 in the bank and a copy of the first and last page of your passport. Q. What language is most commonly spoken in Egypt? A. Since English is taught across in schools all over Egypt, it is spoken widely and understood by people living in the cities. You can easily get round in Egypt without knowing a word of Arabic. However, being familiar with a few words of greetings or gratitude in their native language can go a long way in winning you friends and acquaintances. The language barrier isn’t too overwhelming as Egyptians by nature are friendly and helpful folks. Q. Is transit visa required to traveling through Egypt? A. Transit Visa is not required for travelers with upto 48 hours and Citizens of visa-free countries. They can leave the airport and explore the area without a visa. Are travellers subject to other measures? A. Yes, they will be subject to a 15-minute molecular test, known as ID NOW. If the result comes back positive, a PCR will be performed at the arrival airport. Q. What if anyone tests positive? A. If the passenger is Egyptian, he/she will be transferred to a Fever Hospital or a designated hospital for coronavirus patients where the treatment protocol can be applied. In the event the passenger is not Egyptian and the ID NOW TEST and the PCR test are positive, the passenger will be deported. Q. Do the aforementioned rules apply to all coronavirus vaccines? A. The rules apply to vaccines approved by the World Health Organisation and the Egyptian Drug Authority. Q. When can vaccinated travellers enter Egypt? A. At least 14 days after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, Sinovac, or Sputnik vaccines, or 14 days after receiving a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. Q. What is the best currency to take to Egypt? A. Egyptian Pound (LE) is the official currency of Egypt, with 1 Egyptian Pound equalling to INR 4.32. It is recommended that you don’t exchange your currency before entering Egypt since you are bound to get a better rate locally. There are plenty of currency exchange stores across all Egyptian cities. Avoid changing the same at the foreign exchange desks at hotels as you might not get the bank rate. Though most businesses prefer if you paid in cash, your Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. The same, however, doesn’t hold true for American Express. Places that accept cards require you to pay a 3% processing fee to the bank. However, there are ATMs all over the city, at major hotels, and outside banks where you can withdraw the money you have previously loaded into your credit or debit cards. Q. Is bargaining a norm in Egypt? A. Bargaining is very much a way of life in Egypt whether you are shopping at a souk or a local market. The key is to quote a price you think is lower than what you wish to pay and not showing any enthusiasm while striking the bargain. If the hawker wants to sell it to you, he will definitely stop you from leaving without buying it. In case you reach an impasse, take a step back and accept the tea he offers you, and you might just end up closing the deal. But backing out on an agreed price is frowned upon and never ever put up a bargain for the sake of it especially when you are hardly interested in buying the product. Q. What to wear in Egypt? A. You had rather be conservatively dressed in Egypt - it being a Muslim country. In Cairo for either men or women it is not acceptable to wear clothes that reveal legs such as skirts or shorts, or for that matter sleeveless tees and tank tops. In the resort towns of Sinai, Hurghada and Sharm-el-Sheikh, the dressing can be more liberal on the beaches. But the moment you step into the market you need to put on your full jeans or trousers. What are the timings to visit the Pyramids of Giza? A. This open-air site of both historical and archaeological importance is open from 08:00 am until sunset. Most monuments and museums across Egypt typically open at around 09:00 am and shuts at 05:00 pm. There are a few museums that have separate morning and evening opening hours such as from 09:00 am to 04:00 pm and from 05:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Q. Is there any train connectivity from Cairo to other major Egyptian cities? A. Egypt has a decent railway network that connects the Nile Valley, the Nile Delta and the Suez Canal. Summer time flags off trains to Egypt’s Mediterranean coast such as Alexandria. Domestic air travel in Egypt can be pretty steep and hence an average traveller prefers train travel for their economical price point and also for the frequency and timeliness of service. Additionally, what better way to take in views of the Nile Valley than with a train ride through its heart. The metro remains one of the best as well as fastest ways to travel within the city as the streets are prone to snarls due to rise in vehicular traffic. Be mindful that metros can get chock-a-block in the peak hours, aside from that it is the most budget-friendly way to explore central Cairo. The metro ride starts from the city’s southernmost point, Helwan and goes all the way to its northeastern zone, Al Marg. There is a second line that begins at Shubra in northern Cairo and terminates in its west in Giza. A third line takes you from the city to the airport. A ticket comes at 1 Egyptian Pound for going from one station to another regardless the line you choose. Besides, there are two women-only cars on each metro. Q. The land located in the northeastern corner of Africa, is one of the most Ancient Civilizations and is so much more than just the Pyramids. Five nights on the river Nile gives you a complete experience of the region. Observing the busy Suez Canal through the city of Ismailia is very exciting.

In view of the recent announcement by the Government in the budget session 2023, a 20 % TCS fee will be charged on the actual tour cost for all outbound tourists commencing October onwards. The tourist can claim a tax credit for the paid TCS.

Cairo - Alexandria

We will arrive in Cairo on an Egypt Air flight from Mumbai early in the morning. After immigrations we will be met with the local tour guide and drive up to the ancient Mediterranean city of Alexandria. The city boasts of having one of the longest marine front in the world. After lunch and check in we will have time to rest before we head out to visit the Montazah Garden and Qaitbay citadel (from Out Side). Dinner is included & overnight stay in the hotel.

Alexandria - Cairo

After breakfast, we will visit the city famous for its Great Library, which was one of the biggest in the ancient world. The once burned-down library is now completely restored and one of the wonders of Egypt. We will also visit the Catacombs before getting on the highway to Cairo. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Cairo.

Giza - Cairo - Aswan

After an early breakfast we would head to the Pyramids area. We do not recommend entering the Pyramid, but you would have enough time to do so (optional). As we depart from the Pyramids, we will see the Sphinx, a famous structure with a man's face and a lion's body, we will also visit the Valley Temple. In the evening, we will drive to Cairo airport to board our flight to Aswan, Egypt's southernmost city on the Nile. Stay the night in Aswan. Dinner will be early as there is an early morning wake up next day.

Nile Cruise

We will leave check out at 0400 hours today to visit Abu Simbel, Egypt's largest ancient temple complex. The sun shines particularly well in the morning on the giant sitting statues of Abu Simbel. A box breakfast will be provided. Abu Simbel is located on Lake Nasser, which was formed as a result of the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Abu Simbel was transported piece by piece from its original location, which was to drown in the lake. We'll check in later on the Nile cruise for lunch and head to Nubian Village and later to Aswan souq. Dinner and overnight on board.

After a leisure breakfast we would have time to visit both the High Dam and the Island Temple of Philae in a sail boat. Head back to the cruise for lunch and later view Aswan as we sail on with the stream. The Nile here from South to North and therefore Upper Egypt is considered the South and vice versa. The ancient Egyptians worshipped the Nile and elements of nature. The twin temple of Kom Ombo built somewhere between 150 - 85 BC is special and only one of its kind as the Northern face of it is dedicated to the worship of the crocodile, god Sobek, the god of fertility and creation. The southern face is dedicated to the falcon god and everything along the axis is perfectly symmetrical. The temple looks particularly beautiful in the night. The sailing continues through the night as the cruise sails for its next stop, the town of Edfu.

Early in the morning we will disembark from the cruise and head out to visit the temple of Edfu. The distance of around 5 kms from the West Bank of the Nile to the temple complex. We will get back to the cruise for breakfast and the most beautiful part of our sailing as we head to Luxor. The Esna lock will be our next halt as the cruise slowly passes through the lock which makes sure the dip in the water level at Esna is taken care of. Many local sellers of artefacts will approach the cruise from the water in their small boats. The sundeck is the best place to take in the views of the surrounding fields and villages that pass as we sail towards Luxor and anchor at around 1600 hours. In the evening visit the magnificent temple of Karnak located in Luxor, where we will be entertained with the light and sound show & after that we visit Luxor Souq. Dinner and overnight on board.

West Bank - Luxor - Cairo

After breakfast, we will travel to the east bank, which is home to one of the largest collections of ancient artefacts in the entire world. The Valley of the Kings is enchanting; this is where you will witness a real tomb without being destroyed like the Pyramid. Later we will see amazing Colossi of Memnon and head to the Luxor airport to board the flight to Cairo. After a scrumptious dinner overnight stay in the hotel.

In the morning we will depart for Ismailia to visit the most iconic Suez Canal. When the revolution harmed the tourism business, the canal essentially prevented the nation from entering an economic depression. We will cross the Suez Canal by a local boat (on availability – As it is subject to permissions by Canal Authority). There is always the option of looking at Egypt’s biggest revenue generator from a distance as we enjoy lunch from a hotel built close to the Canal. Later on, we will visit Papyrus centers in Giza, Dinner and overnight stay in Cairo.

Cairo - Mumbai

After breakfast, visit the Cairo Museum, otherwise known as the Egyptian Museum. The Cairo Museum has the greatest collection of pharaonic antiquities in the entire world, including the gold found from the Tutankhamun tomb. Post lunch we will drive to the Cairo airport to board our flight to India.

Egypt is a lot more than just the Pyramids and its ancient temples. Our itinerary consciously aims in exploring the other aspects of Egypt, including the Suez Canal and the River Nile.

The highlight of the trip is the 5 nights stay on the river Nile. The stay is divided into two parts, 3 nights in the 5-star cruise and 2 nights in an Aswan Hotel.

Crossing the Suez Canal with a local ferry is based on security checks. Since the Canal is a highly guarded area we are able to see it from a distance from the hotel where we have lunch.

Egypt is very safe to travel. There might be some random checks on the road while you sit in the coach otherwise there won’t be any stoppages.

All the monuments and temples need a considerable amount of walking. A daily walk of around 2 kms is average on the tour.

7.  3 Years IT Paper/Form 16.

8. If Self Employed: Visiting Card & Business letterhead for covering letter purpose. Company Registration copy / Partnership Deed / Company Memorandum. Company Bank Statement Last 6 Month, 3yrs IT Paper.

9. If Student: College ID copy and No-Objection Certificate / Bonafied Certificate.

10.  If Applicant is retired: Retirement Proof.

11. For out Station Passport: 02 address proofs like Aadhar card, Electricity Bill, MTNL Bill.

12. Applicant if Divorced then need Divorce paper’s copy and if Widow/Widower then spouse’s death certificate copy.

13. Marriage Certificate if Spouse name is not added on passport.

14. If Widow person traveling alone sponsor documents required – If sponsor is son / daughter : Financial Documents, if working salary slips, Sponsorship Letter & sponsor passport copy.

When is the best time to travel to Egypt? There is no best time to travel to Egypt! As the choice of the period depends on the type of trip you want to make. For a holiday on the Red Sea, for example, the ideal period is from the end of February to the end of October, although it is preferable to avoid the strong heat of July and August.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in cultural trips and are planning to go to Luxor, Aswan, and Abu Simbel. It will be better to opt for the winter period so as to make less effort during excursions to the various tourist sites.

In general, however, August is best avoided across the country when temperatures reach annual highs. It is very advisable to travel to Egypt in Easter and Christmas and New Year 2021.

Your actual 10 days Egypt Tour from India (Cairo, Hurghada & Nile Cruise) begins when our professional tour guide picks you up from your hotel to commence your tour to the Great Pyramids of Giza , the Sphinx and Saqqara. Day 3 Egyptian Museum, Saladin Citadel and Khan El-Khalili

Explore the fantastic contents of the historical  Egyptian Museum  at Tahrir Square in Cairo. Hundreds of objects from all periods of Egypt’s past are displayed on the two floors of the museum.

From the museum to the  Citadel  of the Sunni Muslim leader Saladin, built-in 1172 to protect Cairo against the Crusaders. The White Mosque of Mohammed Ali Pasha is a prominent feature of the citadel.

You will finish your tour today at the historical bazaar of  Khan El-Khalili , the largest bazaar in the Middle East. Transfer back to your hotel.

Day 4 Fly to Aswan - Aswan Tour - Nile River cruise

You’re going to spend the next three nights of your 10 days Egypt Tour from India on board a Nile River cruise. So, you will take a transfer from your hotel to Cairo Airport to fly to Aswan to begin your 3-night Nile River cruise from Aswan to Luxor.

Meet your guide just outside the arrival terminal at Aswan Airport to commence your tour. Explore the highlights of the beautiful City of Aswan such as the  High Dam , the  Temple of Isis  at Philae Island, and the granite quarry of the  Unfinished Obelisk .

Day 5 Aswan - Kom Ombo Temple

Enjoy a free morning on board your cruise ship or join us on an optional tour to the phenomenal  temples of Abu Simbel . Your Nile cruise ship will set sail to Kom Ombo around the lunchtime. Disembark at Kom Ombo to visit the  twin Temple  of Horus and Sobek. This temple was built in the Ptolemaic period. Kom Ombo Temple honored two deities: the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus. Due to the conflict between Sobek and Horus, the ancient Egyptians felt it necessary to separate their temple spaces within one temple. The Kom Ombo Temple has two entrances, courts, colonnades, Hypostyle halls, and sanctuaries, one side for each god.

Day 6 Edfu - Esna - Luxor

Before/after breakfast, you will take a horse and carriage to the  temple of Horus  in Edfu. Edfu Temple is one of the most striking and complete of ancient Egyptian temples and is dedicated to the worship of the god Horus. Situated on the western bank of the Nile, its construction began during the reign of Ptolemy III (246–221 BC) in 237 BC, but was completed in the reign of Ptolemy XII (80–51 BC) in 57 BC, 180 years later.

Take your carriage back to your River cruise to set sail to Luxor via the Lock of Esna. Upon arrival in Luxor, you will visit the impressive  Temple of Karnak  and the great  Temple of Luxor . Both temples were dedicated to the Theban Triad; Amun, Mut and Khonsu. Overnight in Luxor.

Day 7 Kings Valley, Hatshepsut Temple and Colossi of Memnon

MYTH 3: “Dress Conservatively. Your Arms And Legs Should Be Covered”

We could find a number of tourists roaming around wearing hot pants and sleeveless tops, and none of the locals were raising an objection against travelers who were not covered from head to toe. Nowadays, people are very open to wearing whatever they want in these Middle Eastern nations without being looked down upon or ridiculed in public. One should, however, cover their legs, arms, and heads before entering any holy place such as a mosque.

You’ll find good outlets and vendors making delicious Shawarmas and Falafels almost at every corner, two of Egypt’s most famous dishes that have now turned into my favorites!
