Bangkok’s floating markets have a long history in the region and reflect the traditional way of life of the people who live along the rivers and canals.

The waterways of Bangkok are called klongs in Thailand and used to be the main routes for goods trade.

Today, they are still an important part of the culture and daily life of the locals.

At the same time, they are also among the most popular Bangkok attractions, which, over the years, have become another source of income for merchants and tour operators.

But fear not: although the floating markets are popular with tourists, they have retained much of their authenticity and still offer exciting glimpses into the lives and culture of the locals.

The best way to explore the floating markets of Bangkok is to take a boat trip.

Why this experience?

Your trip in Thailand cannot be completed without visiting floating markets around Bangkok. This experience takes you to 3 of the best traditional floating markets near Bangkok, and makes a side trip to the famous Mae Klong Railway Market for the moment a train cuts through the market. The floating markets are known among Thai diners as best places to find local delicacies, especially granny's dishes made with fresh and homegrown ingredients. As the markets are close to the Gulf of Thailand, they offer seafood dishes made from the freshest caught. You will enjoy delicious local dishes and snacks each market has to offer. Some are cooked and served straight from boat vendors!

Besides waterways trafficked by row wooden boats loaded with colorful fresh produces, the scene often seen on postcards, you will learn a lot about local ways of life. Barter system persists among the boat vendors, they switch items instead of paying with money. At the first floating market, we will take a row boat into a coconut orchard and see how coconut palm sugar is made. You will be charmed by the markets' old-school atmosphere. With wooden houses standing strong since 1960s and oldies tunes playing on records, this experience feels like a trip back into time.

3 distinct floating markets, each with different characters

There are a few floating markets around Bangkok but we have selected 3 with distinct characters for you to experience. At Tha Kha Floating Market, you will get row boat vendors loaded with colorful produces, a perfect postcard picture. This is where local farmers meet to exchange their produces. Bang Noi Floating Market is a simple and quiet riverfront community. Whereas Amphawa, the biggest and most famous among the 3, are bustled with food stalls, restaurants, shops, and local visitors enjoying their day out.

Hot dishes cooked and served from boat vendors

Floating kitchen as Thai people call it, watching these vendors prepare your dishes in their self-contained kitchens is quite amazing. Several of the dishes you eat on this experience, you will not find them anywhere else. On the list are mackerel fried rice, roasted banana in sweet coconut milk sauce, to name a few.

The market that gives its way to a passing train

At a glimpse, Mae Klong Railway Market looks like any upcountry Thai wet markets. But it is the only market in Thailand that is set on an active train track. When a train comes, vendors will roll their awnings and stalls back, let the train pass and resume their positions as if there has never been a train. Not everything gets rolled back though. Some vendors leave their produces on the ground, knowing that the train will pass fine above them. So, the vegetables lie only a few inches underneath the passing train! The moment an announcement for a passing train is made to the moment the vendors resume their positions counts less than 5 minutes. Get your camera ready!

Fun row boat ride into a coconut orchard

Enjoy a beautiful scenery as you ride a row boat into a coconut orchard. We will get off at a villager's home, visit their coconut orchard, and see how they make coconut palm sugar, a famous local product.

The temple within a tree

A mini version of Angkor Thom in Canbodia, the 400-year-old ordination hall of Wat Bangkoong Temple is overgrown by Banyan trees. It looks like the trees are holding the structure together. Inside the hall, there is fainted but beautiful murals on Buddha's life.

After a pick-up from your hotel, we leave Bangkok on a one-hour van ride to Maeklong Railway Market to see the amazing moment a train passes through. Then we head to Tha Kha Floating Market to have delicious breakfast cooked and served from row boat vendors. Here, we take a row boat ride on canals to a quiet residential neighborhood, enjoy canal-side scenery, visit a coconut orchard, and see the traditional method of coconut sugar making. The second market we visit is Bang Noi Floating Market which is similar to Amphawa but in a smaller scale. Here we'll relax at a coffee shop and try traditional coffee or a variety of other refreshing Thai drinks.

Next we move to Wat Bangkoong Temple, to see its tree-overgrown ordination hall and Thai faith in Buddhism and superstitious belief. We'll have a late delicious lunch at Amphawa Floating Market, explore its vintage ambience, before heading back to Bangkok. At each market, you'll have from 20 minutes up to an hour to explore it with the tour guide or on your own. The tour finishes when we drop you off at your hotel.

My friend and I joined to the Offbeat Floating Markets Food Tour. It was very well organized tour with a nice car and our very nice tour guide Nuch. If you want go out of Bangkok and see more local life and different things, this is what you need. We loved it.

floating market private tour

I did the all-day floating markets tour on Saturday and it was wonderful. It was a great chance to get out of Bangkok into the beautiful countryside and included a peaceful boat ride through some canals and even a free 20-minute Thai massage! Lots of great food was included and there was plenty of time to browse the markets and buy additional food. The only problem was that the sheer variety of food available at the markets was so overwhelming you would need several days to try it all.

floating market private tour

Great tour! Met great people in our group! The lady was very knowledgeable and toured us in 3 différent Floating markets. I got to eat the best Pad Thai so far in my trip and also an out-of-this-world spicy crab Tom Yam I am still dreaming about! We are still trying to find better food as I am writing these lines and we were to very good places already. Definitely recommended. It also shows you the way people live and the tour was also very culture oriented. A very well spent full day! Would do it all over again!

Great tour led by Olive. We traveled by a very comfortable van about 1 1/2 hrs south of Bangkok to visit some of the less crowded and touristy markets. Olive was very helpful in selecting foods for us to try. It was a great day.

floating market private tour

We had a great time on this tour, saw three different floating markets and the train market. Our guide was organized and informative. We tasted many delicious dishes and didn’t feel too rushed. It would’ve been nice to observe the cooking of the different dishes of it but overall this was a great company, very organized, and would definitely book again!

  • Instead of visiting one of the many palm sugar plantations that have been set up for tourists to see and learn about the process, we visit a local family at their village plantation where they make palm sugar daily throughout the year. The family has been here for generations and bringing our small groups provides some additional income for them.

The Damnoen Saduak floating market is one of the most popular sites to see in Thailand and for good reason! Some call this area the Venice of the East, where vendors sell their goods from boats and stalls set up along the water's edge of this unique market. In the mid-1800s, to help locals journeying between towns, Thai King Rama IV and his son, King Rama V, commissioned a 32-kilometer canal connecting two rivers together: the Mae Krong river and Tha Cheen River. The name of this man-made canal is Damnoen Saduak, which means "convenience journey" in Thai. You'll start your private tour with a drive-by private vehicle to the railway market, about two hours from Bangkok. Please be on time for your tour! We'll need to leave at 6:30 am sharp or you'll miss the excitement at the surreal railway market. And trust us, you need to see it to believe it! Vendors set up their goods along active railway tracks, with fresh produce, fabrics, cooking supplies, and more all lined up a mere few inches from the track's edge (and in some cases, right on top of the tracks). You'll get to see what happens when the train comes through: vendors gather up their things and lower their canopies, and both vendors and shoppers step aside as the train travels right through the middle of the market. Once the train leaves, business resumes as though nothing had disrupted them! Between the train schedule, your guide will lead you around the market and introduce you to traditional Thai foods, from desserts to snacks to fresh fruits.  We'll then continue on a short drive to a palm sugar plantation, where we'll visit the house of a villager who still makes palm sugar the traditional way. There are a lot of coconut palm tree plantations in Thailand, and the local wisdom of making organic palm sugar from the nectar of coconut flowers has been passed down from generation to generation. Onward, we'll board a small boat for a ride through narrow village canals, to reach the famous floating market of Damnoen Saduak — keep your camera ready as this place is a non-stop photo op. If anything catches your eye along your boat ride, let your guide know and you can stop to chat with vendors and purchase something to take home (or to eat right there!). We'll then depart the boat and walk around to explore more of the market. You'll find a variety of Thai foods, such as seasonal tropical fruits from local orchards, as well as souvenirs, all available on both river banks. Around noon, we'll head back to Bangkok and return you to the meeting point which is right next to BTS (Skytrain) station National Stadium. Your local guide will be happy to give you directions back to your accommodation or to other sites you should see.

After exploring the unique markets, which remain one of the top attractions in this region, you’ll return to your air-conditioned coach and head towards Kanchanaburi, where the River Kwai is located.

Following your time at the bridge, head to the JEATH War Museum to see displays of pictures and artifacts from the period.

We booked this tour based on reviews and everyone was right, it is great.

An amazing way to discover Bangkok. In krabi the stay was good.. Travel to nearby places were very good.. Hotel staff were very good.. In Phuket (Patong) the place was horrible.. The hotel you suggested was very bad..

I’ve been to Bangkok 3 times now and never really been that in love with the city but going on this tour gave a whole new appreciation for it, I saw places I’d never been, the temples at night are just amazing and so different to the crowded day scen

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
