Top 16 Best Things To Do In Genting Highlands 2024

Here are the best things to do Genting Highlands, Malaysia offers. Read through and select the ones that fit your interests and timeframe.

Have Fun At The Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park

Ice Age at Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park has long been anticipated with construction starting all the way back in 2013. It finally opened in February 2022 and can now be added to your top 10 things to do in Genting list!

The park features over 26 rides spread over nine differently themed worlds. Rides range from thrilling roller coasters to awesome 4D experiences. There’s also plenty of cool buildings to walk through and see.

The park themes are based on animations and include Ice Age, Rio, Epic and Robots among others making this a great place for kids. Kids can also meet their favourite characters and take photos with them.

There are a few places to eat as well.

The park is currently in a “soft-opening” phase. I visited in April 2023, and honestly found it disappointing with too much shut at the moment, especially with the high entry price.

However, all the pieces are in place for a great theme park. It’s very well presented with some great rides. The upside at the moment is that I found lines very short and plenty of family friendly rides open.

I visited by myself and was finished in two hours with some of the rides I was most hoping to go on not being open. Or, in the case of Samba Gliders, I wasn’t able to go on it unless I wanted to pay a RM20 locker fee!

I don’t think it will be long before this becomes the best place in Genting Highland to visit though. Once it’s all open, I definitely want to return!

Located at the centre of Resorts World Genting, you won’t be able to miss this theme park and it’s quite a sight. You can walk through and enjoy without buying tickets too if you don’t like going on rides.

Embrace The Cold In Snow World Experience

You would be forgiven for not thinking that one of things to do in Genting Highland Malaysia is to visit the snow, but it is. Snow World Experience is located at Resorts World Genting and is the best place in Genting Highlands (in fact the only place) to see snow!

Snow World Experience features frigid temperatures and is an indoor winter wonderland. This is a great place for kids. There is a large slide called the Toboggan slide, heaps of cool sports for photo opportunities and even an igloo.

You can do all the things you’d want to do in the snow here like build a snowman, make snow angels and have a snowball fight.

Note, this was temporarily closed at the time of publishing.

Be Thrilled At The Zombie Outbreak

Located at Ripley’s Adventureland at SkyAvenue, Zombie Outbreak is another one of the attractions Genting Highland Malaysia offers.

It is basically modeled as an out of control zombie apocalypse. Your job is to try and contain the situation. There are people dressed as zombies and things that jump out at you. It is worth it if you’re looking for unique activities in Genting Highlands. It can be a good activity for families but it’s not really suitable for young kids.

You’ll see zombies, weird and interesting artwork, a ghost house, quirky facts and lots of things designed to trick your eye – a closer look can reveal much more! One to two hours is enough here and it’s better for older kids and adults (younger kids might get scared).

Other Ripley’s Adventureland Attractions

Ripley's Adventureland

Enjoy A Game Or Two At SkyCasino

SkyCasino

If you’re wondering what can you do in Genting Highlands that you can’t do elsewhere in Malaysia, SkyCasino is a good example.

As Malaysia’s only casino, SkyCasino is one of the super unique places to go in Genting Highlands. The casino is huge with all different types of table games played including blackjack, poker as well as slot machines and many other games.

Hop On The Genting Awana SkyWay Cable Car

Riding up the mountain in Awana SkyWay

Possibly the top attraction in Genting Highland is the cable car. It is not only the best way to get from point A to B, but it’s also the best way to see the rainforest from above.

Hop inside a gondola (there are both standard and glass floor options) from Awana Station and travel the 620 metres up to SkyAvenue Station. The journey takes about 10 minutes. You can get a ticket with express boarding if there’s a line and you don’t fancy waiting.

The cable car also stops at Chin Swee Station on the way where you can see the Caves Temple (listed below).

The cable car ends at SkyAvenue Station where you’ll find all the resorts, shopping, dining options, theme parks and attractions at Genting Highlands that make it such a popular destination.

Visit The Chin Swee Caves Temple

Chin Swee Caves Temple

The Chin Swee Caves Temple is open from 9am to 6pm daily and can be reached from the Awana SkyWay by hopping off at Chin Swee Station.

This is a Taoist temple in honor of Reverend Chin Swee, who is believed to bring rain and offer protection from evil spirits. One of the Genting things to do is simply walk around this area.

The temple is intricately decorated with plenty of statues including a large statue of the Buddah. Next door, there is a stunning nine storey pagoda which is also one of the things to see in Genting Highlands.

The walk to the temple itself is fascinating as you’ll pass through the “10 chambers of hell” – a depiction of the path to enlightenment.

Tour The Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm

Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm

Believe it or not, one of the things to do at Genting Highlands Malaysia year round is strawberry picking. This is because the strawberries grown at the Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm are a special variety that are able to grow year round.

Walking around the farm itself is a fun thing to do. However, one of the best things to do here is strawberry picking. Indeed, this is among the best activities for kids in Genting Highlands. Once picked, you simply pay for the strawberries by their weight.

If you don’t fancy picking your own strawberries, you can purchase a variety of pre-picked strawberries as well as a range of other goods like jams and candies.

There are not just strawberries here. Mushrooms are also grown, as well as herbs, vegetables and flowers. There’s a 6-acre Lavender Garden to visit here too which is included in the entry fee.

Tan Sri (Dr) Lim Goh Tong Memorial Hall

If you’re interested in exploring the surrounding area then one of the places to visit in Genting Malaysia is the Lim Goh Tong Memorial Hall. This site was built to honor Genting’s founder, Lim Goh Tong.

The hall is open and includes a wooden statue of Lim Goh Tong and some nice decorations. There’s even a pretty Koi fish pond here. There’s also a shop where you can purchase some food to feed the fish as one of the things to do in Genting Malaysia.

At 45,000 square feet and with capacity for 5000 guests, a visit to the Arena Of Stars is one of the Genting Highlands things to do. This is one of the best places in Genting Highlands to watch a musical or see a show – particularly great if you’re looking for things to do in Genting at night.

And Shop, Bowl, Go To The Cinema And More

SkyAvenue Resorts World Genting

There is so much more at SkyAvenue as well.

There are tons of shops, cinemas, bowling and restaurants. I kept seeing more and more fun things as I walked around.

You can find plenty to do outside of this list of specialised attractions.

Check out what it’s like at the centre of SkyAvenue in the First World Plaza video below:

Explore The French-Themed Village, Colmar Tropicale

Colmar Tropicale

Another unique place among Genting Highland things to do is Colmar Tropicale. Located around 30 minutes from Genting Highlands in Berjaya Hills, Colmar Tropicale is a hotel and village modeled off a 16th century French village.

You can enter the village even if you’re not staying at the hotel by paying a small entry fee. There are a number of shops and restaurants here as well as some pretty buildings and a central square with a fountain.

The village is modestly sized and somewhat run-down but still interesting to see and explore. There are also some great hiking paths nearby in Berjaya Hills.

Take A Day Trip To Kuala Lumpur

Best Place To Stay In Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands is not only a great place to visit, but it’s also a great place to stay. There are many flashy hotels here and they’re generally located in the heart of Genting close to all the major attractions, especially if you stay at Resorts World Genting Highlands where most of these attractions are located.

This is a popular destination and finding a cheap hotel can be more difficult at peak times. However, most of the time the options are very affordable.

Below are my top picks for each price point including a budget, mid-range and pricier option.

BEST – Grand Ion Delemen Hotel Review

genting tourist place

The Grand Ion Delemen Hotel is our top pick of where to stay in Genting Highlands. This hotel offers an indoor pool, a cafe, a range of restaurants, a fitness center and free WiFi throughout.

Rooms are very well equipped and include double and twin options, as well as one/two/three bedroom suites. This hotel has some of the best room options for families. All rooms have a large flat screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities.

The hotel is located 10 minutes away from Genting Highlands major attractions, and there is a shuttle bus that operates each hour for a small fee. This is a great place to stay in relaxing surroundings.

MID-RANGE – Resorts World Genting – First World Hotel Review

genting tourist place

Resorts World Genting – First World Hotel is connected to the SkyAvenue Mall. The best part of staying here is that all the major attractions are nearby.

There are a range of rooms for hire including deluxe and double rooms as well as twin and triple rooms. Many rooms offer nice views. Rooms are small but all include TV’s, safes and private bathrooms.

At most times, this is an affordable option for travellers. There is plenty of parking, a fitness center, a spa and several onsite restaurants.

BUDGET – Genting View Resort Malaysia Review

genting tourist place

Genting View Resort Malaysia is located a short distance away from the main attractions of Genting Highlands. This is a clean and contemporary hotel and perfect if you’re driving as it offers free parking.

Rooms include twin, double and family options with two double beds. All rooms include a desk, flat screen TV, fridge and balcony. They are fresh and clean.

How To Get To Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands cable car

It’s easy to get to Genting Highlands by bus, a cable car or a car. You can hop on a bus ride from KL Sentral to Awana Bus Terminal.

You can then take a 10-minute Awana SkyWay Cable Car ride to Genting Highlands. Hiring a car or taxi is also an option but isn’t as affordable.

If you need to take a bus, click here for the latest timetables and bus prices.

You can also hire a car to get you there by clicking here.

If you drive or get a taxi, I still recommend you get the Awana Skyway cable car up to Genting Highlands.

Genting Highlands With Kids

Genting Highlands is an awesome place to visit with kids. In fact, many of the activities Genting Highland offers are made even more fun by visiting with kids. This is especially true when it comes to theme parks and experiences like the Snow World Experience.

Even riding the Awana SkyWay can be a great experience for families.

We also think the Strawberry Leisure Farm is the best place to visit in Genting Highlands with kids. This is a lovely spot for being in nature and makes for a relaxed family friendly activity.

Your kids are sure to love some time at Skytropolis Genting

Final Words

It’s difficult to find destinations that offer as much variety as Genting Highlands in such a small area and a relatively convenient location. Not only is it filled with attractions, but its climate is totally different from Kuala Lumpur whilst only being an hour away.

It is a whole world and I think I’d go a bit batty spending more than a couple of days in Resorts World Genting, where you can barely see daylight, so thankfully, there’s some other attractions around this area to get out and about to as well.

It’s the perfect place for a one day trip or weekend getaway, and it’s made even better by visiting as a group or family. We highly recommend a visit here!

The Top Things to See and Do in Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Hop on a cable car in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, for some spectacular views

Take a journey to the Genting Highlands in Malaysia , known for its cooler weather and luscious mountains. Here, you’ll find local farms, restaurants, entertainment venues and panoramic mountain views. Read on to find out how to make your trip memorable, with our list of the best things to see and do at the resort.

Genting skyworlds.

It’s packed with rollercoasters, drop towers, themed rides, shops and fast-food restaurants – and that’s why SkyWorlds is one of the top amusement parks in Malaysia. It has nine movie-themed areas based on 20th Century-Fox franchises. These include Rio, Robot Rivet Town, the Andromeda Space Base, Eagle Mountain and Central Park. Liberty Lane is a cool street of shops and eateries dressed up to look like San Francisco, and the neo-art-deco main studio plaza looks like a building from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Shop and dine at Sky Avenue

genting tourist place

Hike the Gunung Bunga Buah

With all the theme parks and casinos, it can be easy to forget that Genting is immersed in the rainforest. The Gunung Bunga Buah trail takes you there, on a 14km (9mi) trail following an abandoned asphalt road beginning at a trailhead behind the Gohtong Jaya shopping precinct. There are good views along the route (especially from the rock garden immediately before Gunung Bunga peak) and plenty of wild orchids and butterflies. Just be sure to watch out for leeches in the rainy season.

The Genting highlands are tropical, but that doesn’t mean things can’t get wintery – this indoor theme park is literally sub-zero. There’s even falling snow, as well as igloos and toboggan slides – all inspired by European winter scapes – with ruined castles, knights in armour and palaces, where you can pose with a portly king over a lavish banquet. Snow World is situated on Level 2 of the huge First World Plaza, one of the largest malls and entertainment complexes in Southeast Asia.

Take a cable car ride up across the highlands

genting tourist place

Getting to Genting is an event in itself if you board one of the glass-fronted SkyWay cable cars that ascend from Awana or Gohtong Jaya villages, passing over steep ridges covered in rainforest. Keep your eyes peeled as this is your only chance to see wildlife in the tree canopy – the region is a stronghold of rare birds. Take a ride early in the morning or late in the afternoon to see hornbills, whistling thrushes and iridescent blue-eared barbets. And, if you want to explore further, bird-watching guides can be organised through Genting concierges.

Visit the Tanglir Falls

Hidden in the forested hills between Genting and neighbouring Bukit Tinggi is this waterfall, 30m (100ft) high, plunging over granite rocks into a series of cool pools. It’s a tranquil spot where few tourists venture, and the surrounding rainforest is teeming with wildlife, including rare hornbills that are beautiful to behold. To reach this impressive sight, follow the dirt road that runs from behind the Midhills Resort in Genting towards the Brahma Rishi Hill Temple – you’ll find them a few hundred metres (feet) further south.

Savour local food at Chuan Kie

Tze Char restaurants are the Chinese-Malaysian equivalents of bistros: no-frills eateries serving Hokkien Chinese home-cooking, eaten communally with friends. Despite being a simple space – with white tile floors and plain furniture, Chuan Kie in the small village of Gohtong Jaya is the most celebrated Tze Char restaurant in Genting. Snapshots of Malaysian celebrity diners adorn the walls, and dishes are made to recipes conceived by owner Madam Chan Lai Fun, who opened Chuan Kie in the 1970s.

Pick strawberries at Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms

genting tourist place

Before heading up to Genting Highlands Resort via cable car ride, we suggest doing a few activities at Gohtong Jaya. Visit the Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms to get your freshly picked strawberries. Pluck the big and juicy strawberries, and eat them on the spot, or take them with you as delightful treats to-go. A small box of 100g (3.5oz) of strawberries is about 8 Malaysian ringgit (£1.40). Take some photos at the Lavender Farm before you enjoy your delicious strawberry delights at the cafe. Discover various herbs, mushrooms and vegetables at the farm.

Entertain yourself at SkyCasino

With more than 400 gaming tables, 3000 slot machines, a myriad of ATMs and an adjoining food court overlooking the rainforest, the largest casino in Genting keeps its guests completely entranced. The casino sits inside the SkyAvenue Shopping Mall and operates 24 hours a day. With no windows or clocks in the main salon, and huge LED screens broadcasting competitive gambling tournaments, it’s easy to get totally absorbed in the fun and games.

Savour local food in Gohtong Jaya

Have your lunch at the charming town of Gohtong Jaya, where you can find a variety of Chinese meals at places like Yik Kee Restaurant and Chuan Kie Restaurant. Crispy pork belly, steamed egg and vegetables are ideal dishes to order. Savour delicious fresh seafood, such as some steamed fish. Make sure to also treat yourself to some mouthwatering sweet durian tarts or cakes in case you get hungry later during your journey.

Explore Chin Swee Cave Temple

genting tourist place

Make your way to the Chin Swee Cave Temple near Genting Highlands Resort. The temple was built in 1976, and devotees visit it to pray to Buddha and Kuan Yin. Learn about the teachings of Buddhism, and climb up the nine-storey pagoda, lit with 10,000 blessing lamps placed by devotees. Head over to the observation deck to view the mesmerizing panoramic view of the Genting Highlands.

The Founding of Genting Highlands

The Founding of Genting Highlands

In the early 1960s, Lim Goh Tong, a Malaysian businessman of Chinese descent, came up with the idea of developing a hill resort where Malaysians could escape the heat of the lowlands. He envisioned a place that combined leisure, entertainment, and nature, offering a respite from urban life.

Lim discovered the potential of the Genting Sempah area while working on a hydroelectric power project. He found that its elevation, cool climate, and proximity to Kuala Lumpur made it an ideal spot for his hill resort vision. Recognizing the potential for tourism and revenue, development would begin, clearing out massive swathes of uncharted jungle and building the necessary infrastructure.

Lim sought and eventually secured a casino license from the Malaysian government. Genting Highlands officially opened in 1971, with the initial offering including a hotel and the casino. The resort expanded rapidly in subsequent years, adding more hotels, entertainment venues, dining options, and other attractions. Nowadays, it’s a fantastic place for a day trip or quick getaway.

Featuring over 150 designer brands, the outlets frequently feature markdowns on prices, making it great for bargain hunters.

The shopping center is designed in an open-air, village-like setting. It’s pedestrian-friendly with clean walkways, benches, and some covered areas. We also must highlight GPO’s food court, which is one of the better and more affordable dining options around.

For those staying in Resorts World Genting or visiting the main hilltop area, there are regular shuttle services that connect the resort with GPO. The Awana SkyWay cable car service also has a station connected to GPO, meaning you can seamlessly travel between Sky Avenue and GPO.

Theme Parks in Genting Highlands

Outside of its casinos and cool weather, Genting Highlands is most well-known for its large number of theme parks. 1. Genting SkyWorlds

Genting SkyWorlds

Genting SkyWorlds is the highlight of any visit to Genting Highlands. Genting SkyWorlds is divided into multiple zones, each one based around movie properties. There are areas dedicated to franchises like Ice Age, Planet of the Apes, Rio, Epic and more. The rides and at Genting SkyWorlds are also top-notch, providing the thrills you’d expect from a high-quality theme park. By and far the best part about Skytropolis Funland are the rides available. One of the highlights of any visit is the Copper Express, an indoor roller coaster that’s not too intense, making it suitable for families. Other funfair staples also make an appearance here, including attractions like bumper cars, a ferris wheel and the Sky Tower which provides a panoramic view of the entire park.

Once you’re done with the rides, you can head over to the Gaming Zone, featuring a ton of different arcade games. These range from classics arcade games from the 80s and 90s, all the way to modern games. New additions are constantly added to Skytropolis Funland too, and you can’t miss out on the many different vendors available throughout the park.

The entire park is kept at temperatures between -4°C to -6°C, keeping the entire park frozen at all times. The walls of SnowWorlds insulate the area, keeping this cold temperature consistent.

A significant portion of SnowWorld is dedicated to its snow play area, where visitors can participate in activities like building snowmen, tobogganing, or simply enjoying a snowball fight. One of the highlight attractions is the Snow Slide, where visitors can slide down a snowy slope. Once you’re done traipsing through the cold, visit the Warm House, a designated warmer area in the park.

Walk through SnowWorld, and you’ll come into contact with its many zones. These include the Winter Downtown, a European-inspired sector filled with fitting architecture and snow. There’s the World Heritage portion with snowy landmarks from across the world, and a section featuring intricate ice sculptures and ice art. Ripley’s Adventureland

Ripley’s Adventureland in Genting Highlands is one of the entertainment attractions within the Resorts World Genting complex. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium is the heart of the park, featuring its weirdest collection of exhibits. It’s a perplexing mixture of bizzarre items, fascinating historical facts and cultural unique showcases. Genting Highlands’ many attractions are surprisingly resistant to rainfall. Outside of the Genting SkyWorlds and Chin Swee Caves Temple, most Genting Highlands attractions can be experienced during the rain. Despite this, we still recommend visiting between March to September when there’s less rain for an easier time up. You also may want to avoid holiday seasons to avoid crowds.

It’s quite easy to find accommodation in Genting Highlands, though what you’ll want to pick is based on what you’re planning to do. Hotels at the top of Genting are more expensive than those on the way up, but they’re good if you’re planning to spend most of your day walking.

  • Crockfords Hotel – A 5-star hotel with all the amenities you could want.
  • First World Hotel – Relatively affordable 3-star hotel at the top of Genting.
  • Genting Grand Hotel – Good quality 4-star hotel at the top of Genting.
  • Resorts World Awana – Excellent 4-star hotel on the way up with tons of activities.
  • Hotel Seri Malaysia – Affordable hotel at Gohtong Jaya
  • Swiss-Garden Hotel – Great, affordable 4-star hotel further down Genting Highlands.
  • GLAMZ at Genting – A fascinating glamping spot that’s an experience in of itself.

How Do You Get Around in Genting Highlands?

How Do You Get Around in Genting Highlands?

Most of Genting Highlands is surprisingly easy to traverse by foot. Thanks to the Genting SkyWay cable cars, you can practically travel between all of Genting’s biggest attractions by foot. Because of this, it’s perfectly reasonable to go to Genting by bus and enjoy the sights on foot. For the best experience however, we recommend a motorcycle or car.

Conclusion

Genting Highlands stands, a small highlands city, an attraction completely unlike anything else in Malaysia. Although it may share its cool, breezy environment with Cameron Highlands, that’s all they have in common. Genting’s heavily modernized, hyper-condensed city, many theme parks, rich biodiversity and lavish casinos means it’s a one of a kind of experience you need to see to believe.

You may also want to get yourself/your family covered by getting Travel Insurance. Accidents do happen, especially when you least expect it. Medical bills are expensive abroad and with travel insurance, you can have peace of mind.
