Whether heading to a destination wedding or picking up a few imports at a local shop on a business trip, you need to have a system. And it should require more than just throwing them in a ziplock baggie and hoping for the best.

Cigars are delicate things. Without protection from a humidor and exposed to an uncontrolled environment, they’re quickly affected by temperature and humidity changes. And traveling, especially by air, is guaranteed to shake things up. These fluctuations can cause lasting damage — molding or drying and cracking — giving us all the more reason to prepare. We trust our regular humidor at home. But what about when traveling?

You have a few options when it comes to traveling with cigars. Travel humidors and travel cases are tried and true tools. Some aficionados even travel with their desktop humidors. But even then, your cigars, humidor, or travel humidor will all be exposed to a lot of changes. So knowing how to prep for them is just as important as the methodology.

Here’s the list of equipment and knowledge you need to safely travel with cigars.

How Does Travel Affect Cigars? 

Whether traveling in a car, ship, or airplane, the primary concern for cigars isn’t so much about the method or the travel itself. It’s about geography.

When you step off an airplane into the jet bridge on your way to the terminal, you can quickly feel the difference in weather — especially if your destination is someplace particularly warm or cool, humid or dry. Hell, you can tell the difference on a long flight: Your nose dries, you’re thirstier, or you wake up with a sore throat the following day. 

When we travel, vast changes in geography and environment can have damaging effects on our cigars, especially when humidity is involved.

So whatever cigar travel option you go with, the two problems you’re solving for are the drastic humidity differences you’ll face and the general risk of wear and tear on cigars as you move through airports, transportation, hotels, and wherever else you end up.

What Is A Travel Humidor? 

A travel humidor is your best all-around option when traveling. Especially when flying, these keep your cigars protected and as close to home-humidor levels as possible without adding too much bulk to your carry-on situation. Travel humidors are portable by design: durable to prevent physical damage, compact in size so you can pack in checked baggage or a carry-on, and compatible with disposable humidifying elements like humidor packs.

Most travel humidors are equipped with some form of protective case. The spectrum ranges from lightweight, leather “finger cases” that pack a couple of cigars, to locked-and-loaded, indestructible vault-like cases that are often waterproof and airtight. The bulkier the humidor, the more protection — but that eliminates some of the perks of portability.

Generally, you’ll want a humidor pack for every twenty cigars. Also remember that these are temporary options: You need to keep some in reserve to replace depending on how long you’re traveling. How Does a Travel Humidor Work?

A cigar humidor is a box or any kind of container in which the humidity level is controlled in order to create the ideal environment for storing cigars or tobacco. In this simple guide, we tell you everything you need to know about using a humidor to keep your cigars in prime condition.

What is a cigar humidor?

In order to retain the optimum flavour and strength of your cigars, it’s essential you keep them at a temperature as close as possible to 21 °C with near 70% humidity. This is best done using a cigar humidor. 

How does a cigar humidor work?

A cigar humidor is designed to mimic the ambient climate required to keep cigars at their best. Storing your cigars in a humidor will ensure they mature well over time. Much like a fine wine, cigars are at their best when they’ve been given a chance to age, but they have to be stored correctly at the proper temperature and humidity, or else they will rapidly lose their freshness and quality.

How do you prepare a humidor?

Don’t make the common mistake of stacking a humidor full of  cigars  immediately. It needs to be properly prepared in order to function properly.

Before you begin to prepare your humidor, ensure you have all the necessary materials to hand. These include:

• A hygrometer (a device which measures moisture)
• Distilled water
• Plastic bag

If you wish, you could choose to use a complete  humidor hydrating kit , which includes everything you need to prepare your humidor prior to use.

You need to ensure your hygrometer is calibrated correctly to measure moisture. To do so:

• Dampen a cloth with warm water

To do so, simply spray the inside of the humidor with compressed air, then wipe around the interior of the humidor with a soft cloth.

• Close the lid of the humidor, then leave it closed for 12 – 24 hours. The longer you can leave it, the better  
• Repeat this process
• The humidity level should now be between 65% and 75%, ready to store your cigars

How to Charge a Cigar Humidifer 

In order to ensure your humidor remains at optimum humidity, you will need to charge your humidifier at intervals:

• Remove the humidifier from the humidor
• Using the grate, squirt a specialist humidifying solution, or plain distilled water, into the humidifier. Only use a small amount of liquid, as the aim is to moisten the humidifier, not soak it through
• Using a dry cloth, wipe any excess solution from the front of the unit
• Replace the humidifier in the lid of the humidor

Taking care of your humidor

To ensure your humidor lasts and functions well, you will need to care for it properly. Some handy hints include:

• Store your humidor where there’s no risk of it being knocked over
• Keep your humidor out of direct sunlight
• Use a soft cloth and beeswax polish to clean your humidor
• Do not use water on your humidor, as the wood will be damaged. A damp cloth will suffice

Taking care of your cigars

• An easy way of checking if your cigars are in an optimum condition is to press your thumb below the band. They should be firm to the touch, but spring back when you press them. If they don’t spring back then they are not humidified enough. If they feel soft and spongy, they’re over humidified
• Over humidifying can result in a white, powdery ‘bloom’ forming on your cigars. Whilst this is not harmful, it is unsightly and can easily be removed. You can simply brush the mould away from top to bottom using a shaving or pastry brush
• Ensure you rotate the layers of cigars from top to bottom from time to time if you don’t smoke them often
• Don’t store anything but cigars in your humidor. Your lighter , cigar cutter and any additional  cigar accessories  should be stored separately so as not to damage your cigars.

In general, we recommend keeping your cigars in your carry-on bag if-and-when possible. Simply because you never know how the TSA will man-handle your luggage and potentially cause any unnecessary damage.

With that said, if you already have a travel humidor, your cigars should be completely fine in your checked bag, so no need to worry, but keeping them in your possession does mitigate risk. 

• It is important to note that airline safety regulations are enforced at the discretion of the TSA agent, so while one agent may not be worried about your cutter or (EMPTY) lighter, others may confiscate it. 

We recommend putting your cutter and lighter in your checked bag and always traveling with empty lighters to avoid unnecessary issues.

Consider this your comprehensive guide to using your new humidor or a review of how they work to preserve your cigars . If you use a humidor the wrong way, you could wind up causing more damage and loss of flavor to your cigars.

Remember these tips when storing your cigar collection so that every time you break one out to smoke it, it is perfectly plump and tasty.

What Are Humidors?

Humidors are specially designed boxes and cases to store cigars, tobacco, and other similar products. These boxes are humidity-controlled and keep the cigars from drying out or becoming too moist. Tobacco leaves also expand or contract based on the relative humidity level, which can dull the flavor or create a harsher, unpleasant smoke on your palette.

How Does a Cigar Humidor Work

To give you an idea of how to use a humidor, it will help you to understand how they work. Below is an explanation of the four major components that work together in a humidor to preserve your cigars.

1. Humidifier

The humidification system is the most crucial component of the humidifier because it preserves the cigar flavor and texture. There are a few options to maintain the humidity level. You can use gel beads that release moisture, soaked sponges to keep the air moist, or floral foam blocks that slowly release moisture into the humidor. There are also electronic humidifier systems if you want to be extra fancy.

2. Hygrometer

The hygrometer is a mechanism that measures the humidity in the humidor so you can maintain the proper relative humidity. These can be digital or analog and display the relative humidity on the outside of the box.

3. Thermostat

The thermostat is another way to monitor the environment inside your humidor. The cigars must be at a specific temperature and the right humidity. The thermostat allows you to check on the temperature to ensure it stays at the ideal level for the cigars.

4. Spanish Cedar

The last important component is the material of the humidor. Cedar repels insects and pests and can help maintain humidity. People use cedar closets to protect their clothes, and the humidors work the same way. All of the best humidors are cedar.

The Proper Way to Use a Humidor

To get the most out of your wooden humidor and keep your cigars plump and flavorful, follow these steps to use a humidor the right way .

Optional Step: Submerge it in Water

This step is up for debate among experts. Some recommend submerging your entire humidor into a bowl of distilled water. This step allows some water to soak into the cedar, which it can then release or hold over time to maintain humidity.

However, exposing the cedar wood to so much moisture can also damage it or shorten its lifespan. If you want to have your humidor for years to come, consider skipping this step.

1. Calibrate the Hygrometer

The first step is to calibrate your hygrometer. Wrap it with a clean towel or cloth soaked in warm water. The cloth should be wet but not dripping.

Leave the hygrometer wrapped for about 30 minutes to an hour until it reads 95-97% humidity. You only need to do this step if your hygrometer is a separate device from your humidor.

2. Adjust the Humidity

Now, it’s time to get the humidor interior to the proper humidity. To do so, place your humidifier device into the humidor with a shot glass filled with distilled water. Do not use tap water. Close the humidor and leave it for at least 24 hours.

Check the hygrometer once a day until it reads between 65% and 70%, the ideal temperature for cigar storage. This process can take between 2 to 15 days, so be patient.

3. Set Temperature

Once you have reached the proper humidity, ensure the thermostat reads right around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not stray more than five degrees in either direction if you want to preserve your cigars.

You can adjust the room temperature or place the humidor closer or farther from a window to help change the temperature, but keep the shades closed!

The Wrong Way to Use a Humidor

Just as there is a right way to use a humidor, there is a wrong way. The number one thing you should not do is put your cigars in the humidor before following the steps above. If you place them in before you achieve the right humidity and temperature, you risk ruining the cigars.

Humidors are important because cigars are a sensitive item, easily affected by their environment and air quality. When you do not store cigars at the proper humidity and temperature, they lose quality.

But cigars, like fine wine, gain quality over time, so people want to keep them for years before enjoying them. The flavor becomes bolder and the smell stronger over time. So humidors allow cigars to age under the ideal conditions.

If not used, your cigars may dry out or become too moist, sometimes ruining them.

Dry Tobacco

Owning a humidor is a great way to preserve the flavor of your cigars and prolong their life. Before you can begin using your humidor, you need to do some prep work. You will need to season the humidor and assure the humidity levels are adequate to safely store your cigars.

Beginning the Seasoning Process

• Distilled water
• A plastic bag
• A cloth or rag

• Wrap the hygrometer in the towel. Set it aside for 30 minutes.
• Remove the hygrometer in the towel and calibrate it so it reads 95 to 97%. Each hygrometer will be calibrated differently. Refer to your manufacturer's instructions to figure out how to calibrate yours.
• If your hygrometer already reads 95 to 97% when you remove it from the towel, it is ready to use. You do not need to calibrate it.

• If there is any old tobacco or debris in your humidor, spray the inside of the humidor with compressed air.
• Wipe down the interior of the humidor with a damp rag.

Completing Preparation of Your Humidor

• Keep the humidifier face down. Leave it submerged for 2 to 3 minutes.
• Wipe off any excess water with a paper towel when you remove the humidor.
• Make sure you use distilled water. Tap water can damage a humidor.

• Once the hygrometer and humidifier are in place, close the humidor.
• Set the humidor aside somewhere where it will not be disturbed. Leave it closed for 12 to 24 hours.

• Once you're done, the humidity level should be between 65% and 75%. It may be slightly higher right after you complete the process. Give the moisture levels a few minutes to go down.
• Your humidor may not be between 65% and 75% after repeating the process a second time. In this case, you'll need to repeat the process one more time.

Caring for Your Humidor

• In the event the humidity has dropped, you will have to repeat the preparation process. You would remoisten the humidor the same way you initially prepared it.
• Make sure to use distilled water when you repeat the process. This is just as important the second time around as it was the first. Tap water can harm the humidor.

• A drawer is a good place to store a humidor.
• If you have children or animals, keep the humidor out of their reach.

Unless you’re the kind of person that smokes your cigar the same day you buy them, you’re going to need a humidor for storage . Once you properly set up a humidor for your cigars, you will feel a real difference with what you’re smoking. A humidor is essential for the preservation and aging of all cigars, whether you’re spending $5 per stick for $50. That being said, a humidor isn’t ready to go right out the box.

If you don’t perform several preparational steps, the wood will take out the moisture of your cigars and they will become dry and crumbly. Follow the steps below to successfully set up a humidor.

How to season your humidor

Follow the instructions below but be sure not to skip any steps.

Dip the humidifier (the small sponge found inside the humidor) into the distilled water or special humidification solution completely. Keep it there for about 3 minutes to soak. Never use tap water or any other substitutes as they can have minerals or other chemicals that can spoil the humidor and/or cause bacterial growth.

Take your humidifier out of the bowl and dry it with a clean piece of fabric to absorb all excess liquid.

Cover the bottom of your humidifier with a plastic bag. Check if it’s done properly along all the perimeter.

Locate the soaked sponge in the middle onto the plastic bag.

Attach the humidifier and the hydrometer into the humidor.

After closing the lid of the box, leave it for 12 hours minimum . It would be nice if you do it for several days.

The hygrometer will tell you the level of humidity inside your humidor. If its level is not enough you will have to repeat all the steps again. Remember that the safe level of humidity is between 65 and 75% .

At the moment you see these figures on the scale, the humidor is ready for your collection of cigars.

Re-humidifying the humidor

Sometimes it happens that your humidor loses its balance and needs to be re-humidified. It’s simple but requires some accuracy for your humidor to maintain the perfect balance and serve you for many years. For this procedure, you will need a short glass and a little distilled water or humidification solution.

Choose the proper place. It has to be a dry and spacious room. Fill a shot glass with distilled water or special humidification solution and put it at the bottom of the humidor. Special solutions usually contain several components and prevent the growth of mold and bacteria inside the humidor.

Charge the humidifier in an ordinary way. Don’t pour too much water or solution as you aim to moisten the device but not to soak it. Without waiting, put the humidifier back into its place. Dry any excess moisture from the humidifier if needed.

Don’t forget to place the hygrometer into the humidor. Locate it far from the humidifier to guarantee accurate reading of the humidity level.

With patience, wait until the hygrometer tells you that it has already reached the level of 65% , and your humidor is ready for use again.

The hygrometer

Most models of the humidors are already provided with the calibrated hygrometer. Remember that the ideal level of humidity is 65%, but there is a so-called safe range to keep cigars fresh. It is from 60 to 75% . Some smokers prefer their cigars when the range is closer to 80%, but still, the storage is maintained at 65%. For such a reason, real connoisseurs obtain two different humidors.

Don’t think too much about the location of the hygrometer as you can place it anywhere convenient for you. Just keep in mind that you must allow airflow for the most accurate reading results. Mount it on the lid of the box or inside the humidor.

Calibrating the hygrometer

A hygrometer as many measuring tools has to be calibrated. Keep in mind that calibration must be carried out not only before the first use but regularly every 3-4 months . The process of calibration is not extremely difficult but for this, you will need a little ionized salt, distilled water, and a plastic container. The last one shouldn’t be large but its bottom must be flat.

• Take a teaspoon of salt and put it into the container.
• Pour a bit of distilled water and mix it to have a pasty substance. Be precise with water, don’t add more than needed, as it can distort the measurement.
• Put your hydrometer next to the paste into the plastic container.
• With the lead closed leave the container for up to 10 hours but not less than 7 . Don’t open and move the item.
• After the required time has passed, open the container, take the hygrometer and check. The reading must be from 73 to 77%. If your figures differ it means, that this hygrometer can’t be calibrated. The ideal figure is 75 and the difference between this and your number shows the gap, by which the hygrometer is out of calibration.

The humidifier

The humidifier is a device that maintains the level of humidity inside your humidor and keeps your cigars safe and fresh.

Tips for charging the humidifier

• Take the humidifier from the box.
• Pour some distilled water or special humidification solution into the item through the grate.
• Don’t use more liquid than needed. With the help of a dry cloth wipe any excess water from the front part of the humidifier.
• Put it back to place.
• Pay attention that distilled water increases the level of humidity inside your humidor, when special solutions, on the contrary, decrease it.

Taking care of your cigars

Havana cigars are like wine. They need time to mature. So they will improve their taste over the years if they are kept properly. Don’t forget to fill up your humidifier on time. For this purpose, it’s better to use special humidification solutions which are usually made of polyglycol, distilled water, and mold inhibitors. The second factor that can guarantee the wonderful taste of your cigars over time is the level of humidity, it must fluctuate at the level of 65%, plus/ minus 2%.

The temperature is also important. Aim the range from 65° f to 72° f. To be sure that the conditions are just what you want, you can check the cigars the next way. Press your cigar a little under the band with your thumb. If your cigars feel firm and elastic it means they are in a good condition.

Hard but crispy feelings indicate under humidification, and vice versa very spongy and soft cigars are over humidified.

The so-called white bloom like a mold sometimes appears on the wrappers of cigars. Excessive humidity can be the reason, but it will not spoil the taste. Take a special brush for shaving or any other soft brush and get rid of the bloom, moving towards the open end.

Fresh air is a must for Havana cigars. From time to time open the humidor and rotate your cigars. If you are not a regular smoker do it weekly. Replace the cigars from the bottom layer to the upper one and vice versa. Never store other objects, for example, lighters or cutters inside the section for storing cigars.

• Choose a safe place for your humidor to avoid its falling down.
• Direct sunlight is forbidden as it can heat the humidor interior and fade the exterior look of the wood.
• Don’t put anything on the top of the box.
• A soft cloth will suit the best for cleaning the humidor.
• For safe cleaning and polishing, both ordinary furniture polish and beeswax are great. Do it regularly and your humidor will look fantastic.
• If you don’t want to damage the wood, never wipe the humidor inside with a wet cloth soaked in water or any other solution.

When you get a new humidor you can’t wait to fill it with your precious collection of cigars, but stop. You must wait, following several simple steps described above, you will not damage the content. If you start using your humidor before it actually reaches the level of 65% humidity, the results will be very disappointing.

How do I prepare a new humidor?

Cigars cannot be placed into a brand new humidor and be expected to stay fresh. Why? Unless it is properly prepared, there is not an adequate amount of humidity inside your humidor. That said, here are instructions on how to prepare a new humidor.

• Using a paper towel or a soft cloth, wipe down the entire inner surface of the humidor, including the inside of the lid, with distilled water. (It is crucial that only distilled water be used for this since water drawn from any other source will contain bleach, calcium, chlorine and other chemicals and minerals that will clog your humidification unit and, worst of all, impart those flavors to your cigars.)
• Dip the humidification unit in a shallow bowl of distilled water and let it soak for 5 to 10 seconds. After it has been soaked, shake out any excess water and place it on a paper towel for a few minutes. This will allow any additional excess water to drain out. After a few minutes, affix the humidification unit to the roof of your humidor (or in the case of the glass top humidors, place it to either side or follow the instructions that came with your humidification unit) and close your humidor. It should be allowed to sit for at least 12 hours.
• After 12 hours repeat step 1. Do not skip this step. Any cigars placed inside your humidor too early will be competing for humidity with the still porous cedar lining and will not be adequately humidified.

Assuming it was properly prepared when you first purchased it, the only real maintenance required will be to refill the humidification unit from time to time. How often this is necessary depends, of course, on the reading of your hygrometer and the condition of your cigars.

At best, a plastic Tupperdor will prevent your cigars from drying out, while a cedar-lined wooden humidor box allows for the slow and steady release of air and exchange of gasses created during a cigar’s maturation process. An airtight plastic humidor will normally over-humidify your cigars and cause them to get moldy or burst open.

My humidor was accidentally left open for several days. Do I need to re-humidify it? How do I do that? What should I do about my cigars?

If your humidor has been left open for a few days and the humidity inside of it has evaporated, simply re-prepare it as you did when it was new. (Including re-moistening the humidification unit.) However, there is likely still a fair amount of humidity in the interior cedar, so you will probably only need to wipe it down once. (If too much moisture is applied, you run the danger of warping the interior.) While you are letting it sit overnight, place your cigars in a temporary plastic humidor or Humidi-Pak so that they don’t dry out any further. Once the humidity has been restored to you humidor, return your cigars to it and let them sit undisturbed until they have been adequately re-humidified.

Can’t I just keep my cigars in one of those cheap plastic “Tupperdors?” A friend of mine just got one and he swears by it.

Yeah, and he’ll be swearing at it the first time he opens it up to discover that his cigars have burst open or they’re covered with mold. These devices will work, as a temporary fix, when you don’t have room for a few cigars in your authentic humidor box, but they are neither a reliable or dependable substitute for the long-term storage provided by a wooden humidor box.

How long will my humidor keep my cigars fresh?

If properly maintained, there is no reason a good humidor shouldn’t be capable of storing your cigars for the duration of your life. In fact, there have been reports of pre-embargo cigars “discovered” in walk-in humidors that were placed there 40 or 50 years ago and they were said to be out-of-this-world-delicious.

What qualities should I look for when buying a humidor?

The qualities you want to look for in a humidor are as follows: it should be cedar lined, solidly built with a good, tight, seal and a raised lip around the inside of the box, and be large enough to hold at least 25 to 30 cigars.

What kind of humidor should I buy?

That depends on what your storage needs are.

Aesthetically, your choice will be a reflection of your own personal sense of style. A good humidor can be much more than a well-working and functional piece of equipment, it can be a piece of furniture that adds charm and distinction to a room.

As far as size is concerned, we recommend a box that can accommodate at least 50 or more cigars. Why? Although you may not plan to keep a lot of cigars around at any given time, larger humidors offer the ideal amount of air circulation for properly aging cigars.

In addition, you should not preclude the possibility of stocking up or buying a box or two simply because you do not have enough room for them. Also, once word gets out that you own a humidor box, you might get lucky and receive a box of cigars as a gift from someone and it would be a shame for them to dry out because you didn’t have enough room to store them in a smaller box.

I just bought a new humidor and I can’t get the humidity to 70%. Is there a problem with the seal?

Probably not. If it’s a brand new humidor, you need to have some patience.

Any humidor worth its salt will be cedar-lined and will take some time to break in. Cedar is an extremely porous wood and it will absorb much of the water from your humidification unit before it even gets a chance to enter your cigars. This is why the interior of all brand new humidors need to be wiped down with distilled water and allowed to sit with no cigars in it for at least 24 hours.

If you immediately put cigars in a brand new humidor box, they will be competing with the wood for the humidity that your humidification unit provides.

If you’ve already wiped down the inside of your humidor box, and it is still not reaching 70% humidity, you may not have a humidification element large enough for the size of your humidor box.

The hygrometer inside my humidor isn’t reading 70% but it’s pretty close. Should I worry about this?

How are your cigars? Press down in the center of a cigar with your thumb. (Make sure you don’t press down on the head or you could crack the cap if it has gotten a little dry.)

Depending on the size of your humidor you may need to repeat this procedure on a number of different cigars. Cigars in particularly large humidors can be exposed to different amounts of humidity due to their varying proximity to the humidification element.

How do they feel? Cigars that are properly stored should give a little when you press down on them but still offer some resistance. If you press down on a cigar and you thumb goes nearly all the way through it as though you were pressing down on a wet sponge, it’s too moist.

On the other hand, if it’s so hard that it feels like it was mined rather than rolled, it is clearly too dry. Although 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% humidity are the ideal conditions for cigar storage, the best gauge for measuring up the effectiveness of your humidor is the condition of your cigars.

Slight variations from the 70/70 ideal are fine if your cigars are still in good shape and should only be a cause for concern if they’re too dry or too moist.

Will the different cigars in my humidor impart their flavors to one another? If so, how can I stop this?

Since cigars are porous by nature, they can impart flavors to one another while in your humidor.

The best defense against this is leaving them in their cellophane wrappers when you put them in your humidor box. Unfortunately, this will not allow the cigars to age properly.

If you plan to keep both strong and mild cigars in your humidor and you’re worried about their flavors intermingling, you should keep them apart by using the dividers that are included in most good humidors.

I want to convert an old Grandfather clock into a humidor. Would lining the interior with acrylic work rather than using Spanish cedar which is hard to find and expensive. Its properties are different from Spanish cedar. It’s odourless and rather than absorbing moisture like Spanish cedar, it’s humidity-retardant, which means that it doesn’t need seasoning. It’s often used for humidity proofing wardrobes and cupboards.

been smoking cigars since mid 90’s. I’ve owned several humidors; one an inexpensive large unit that i bought from an ad in Cigar Aficionado; the other a gorgeous handmade humidor I got as a gift for my 60th.

Never had one that worked well. Always had to baby sit. Boveda packs. Expensive humidifiers. all sorts of crap.

Finally went back to tupperdors. I have one that is a rubbermaid and one that is a Sistema. I have those round plastic hockey puck like humidifiers in there with the gel that you load with wtaer or humidifier fluid.

Right now, my office is 50% humidity (I keep it there year round for guitars i have hanging on the walls) and the temp in the room is 60. The humidity in the Sistema is 71%. And stays there. Always.

That’s the only way to go IMHO. And yes, with my wood humidors, they were sealed tight, yes, I primed the wood and soaked it with distilled H20, my cigars were always dry…i’m a real cynic and if you are looking to store your cigars well so they’ll keep (remember not to let them get too hot or cold and do not put them in a freezer) and you don’t care about being trendy or conspicuous consumption – use a tupperware, rubbermaid, or sistema container like this article says.

My favorite size is a Toro, which is six to six and a half inches long and has a ring gauge typically between 52 and 54.

Cigar strength

Another factor that alters the experience is the strength of the cigar. Think of it as being similar to the strength of coffee or chocolate. The stronger it is, the more bold and dark the flavors, and generally, the bigger the pepper or spice kick. Cigars start at mellow, light, or mild at the weakest, stretching to full-bodied. I do love a good, full-bodied smoke with lots of pepper, but at the same time, it’s not something I’d smoke in the morning with my coffee. Moreover, if you’re going to smoke more than one in a session, you want to order them from weakest to strongest.

As a beginner, you’ll want to start light, especially if this is your first time smoking a cigar. You do not want to jump right into a strong or full-bodied option. Has it been done before? Yes, absolutely, but it’s not something I’d recommend.

Cigar blend

The flavor, aromas, and quality of a cigar are determined by the blend or, rather, the ingredients. Starting with the tobacco and the filler on the inside, the binder to hold it together, and the wrapper on the outside, cigar rollers blend it all, and when you light the end of a cigar, you’re tasting all of that goodness combined. Tobacco leaves and the rest of the cigar ingredients are also heavily influenced by the region and soil in which they are grown. Nicaraguan tobacco, for example, tastes completely different from Cuban or Dominican tobacco. The external wrapper usually determines anywhere from 70% to 90% of the nuanced cigar flavor. Some notables are Connecticut, Habano, Maduro, Corojo, Cameroon, Sumatra, and many more.

Lighter wrappers, like the Connecticut, are some of the best for beginners. However, once you try a few cigars, I highly recommend branching out and testing other blends and brands to broaden your horizons. Experimentation is key, especially if you are trying to find the perfect cigar for your palate and taste. Even your best friend or close relatives will have preferences different from yours. What they like will differ from what you like, and that’s undoubtedly true of enthusiasts like me who have tried hundreds of blends.

Singles versus boxes

If you smoke often, you’ll want to start your own cigar collection, which means buying in boxes. They’re cheaper, especially if you frequent local cigar lounges or shops. That said if you’re not smoking often, buying in singles and smaller bundles is just fine.

Either way, it’s a great place to get started, especially if you want to take a trip to flavor town.

I won’t get too detailed about the flavors because that would spoil the experience, but if this is your first cigar, you should come away impressed.

High-profile blenders like AJ Fernandez dominate the cigar scene these days, and for good reason. The man really cannot make a bad blend. If I were you, I would try one of these sooner rather than later.

Depending on the size, you can expect coffee, citrus, cinnamon, vanilla, earth, oak, and a bevy of other nuanced flavors during your smoke. Don’t worry about picking out every flavor if you’re just starting. Cut it, light it, and enjoy. That’s all you need to do.

Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Champagne

You could do much, much worse for your first cigar. The Perdomo Champagne series is one of the most unique out there, with a nutty, earthy, and delicious blend of sweet flavors that will leave you wanting more by the time you take your last puff. Give it a light, you won’t regret it.

Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real

Romeo y Julieta has been in business since 1875. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s one of the longest-standing cigar brands and one of the most popular and best in the industry. Relocated to the Dominican Republic after the Cuban embargo, they make a wide variety of blends, but the Reserva Real series is one of the best for new folks. A balanced mix of earthy, creamy, nutty, and sweet tones will hit your palate almost as soon as you light one up.

Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Nicaragua Series

• Strength: Medium to full

Released in 2020 to great acclaim, even earning a 90-point rating, the Nicaraguan puro version of the Reserva Real was grown on the AJ Fernandez farm in Esteli — as the name suggests. It’s also delicious and adds an entirely new experience to the series, with notes of raisins and fruit, leather, cedar, and nuttiness.
