  • Shooting and Hunting Activities | UK Locations - Shooting SH

Hunting has been a part of British culture for centuries, and today many people still enjoy this traditional pastime. We specialise in deer stalking, pigeon shooting, rough shooting and wildfowling, whilst there are also opportunities to hunt foxes, hares, and other small game animals.

Many people also enjoy shooting clay pigeons or participating in other forms of target practice with shotguns and air rifles. Hunting is a great way to connect with nature and get some exercise in the fresh open air of natural England, Scotland or Wales.

It can also be a social activity, as friends and family often gather together to go on hunting trips making unforgettable memories as a family. Hunting is still very popular in the UK and enjoyed by people of all ages.

Types of Hunting

There are many different types of hunting, each with its own unique challenges and rewards. Today's main types of hunting in the UK are deer stalking, rough shooting, walked-up shooting, wildfowling, pigeon shooting and big game hunting.

Deer Stalking

Deer stalking  is the practice of quietly observing and tracking deer in their natural habitat. When deer hunting, we use techniques to get close enough to the deer to get a clear shot while minimising the chances of being detected. To do this, stalkers must have a good understanding of deer behaviour and movement patterns. They must also be patient and extremely quiet, as even the slightest noise can send a deer running.

Many of our deer stalkers are helping to regulate populations on large estates, and we have written permission from landowners to stalk grounds throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. When we shoot deer, we always aim for a clean shot to minimise any unnecessary suffering and treat these wild mammals with the respect they deserve.

Deer stalking can be an exciting and challenging form of hunting, requiring great skill and planning. However, it also provides a unique opportunity to view these beautiful animals up close in their natural environment.

At shooting SH, deer stalkers will have the opportunity to hunt a range of Deer across multiple UK locations. Typically deer species found include:

Fallow Deer

Chinese Water Deer

Rough Shooting

Rough shooting  has been a popular sport in the UK for centuries and is still enjoyed by many today. Rough shooting typically occurs on farmland, where gamebirds such as pheasants and partridges are raised for shooting. The sport can be challenging and rewarding, requiring a keen eye and quick reflexes. In addition to being a great way to enjoy the outdoors, rough shooting also helps to control vermin populations and keep farmland healthy.

Pest control is essential for many farmers who can lose crops if they do not manage local populations. Birds, rabbits, and foxes can cause serious damage to crops and reduce the output of our farms

By carefully managing the number of birds shot each year, rough shooters can help to ensure that gamebird populations remain strong. As a result, rough shooting plays an important role in conservation.

Walked Up Shooting

Walked Up Shooting  is a type of shooting where the game birds are flushed out of cover by a line of beaters and then shot by the waiting hunters.

When we use our dogs, a variety of game birds and other wildlife will scramble out of cover. We can use a variety of firearms, but shotguns are mostly used due to their larger spread.

This type of shooting requires great coordination between the beaters and the guns, and it can be a very exciting way to hunt. One of the benefits of walked-up shooting is that it allows for a more challenging hunt, as the game birds are not confined to one area and can be flushed out from anywhere.

You can shoot pheasant, pigeons, duck and woodcocks all in one day of rough shooting. If we are hunting in a woodland, the variety of species can be impressive.

This can make for a really memorable trip, and you can test your shooting skills against different types of wildlife. In addition, walked-up shooting also allows for more shots to be taken, as there are often many game birds flushed out at once.

However, this type of shooting is not without its risks, as there is always the potential for accidents when guns and beaters are working in close proximity. For this reason, it is important to have a well-trained team and to follow all safety guidelines when undertaking a walked-up shoot.

Wildfowling

Wildfowling  is the practice of shooting wild birds for sport. It has been practised for centuries, and today many different types of wild birds can be hunted. Some of the most popular include pigeons, ducks, geese, woodcock, grouse and pheasants.

Wildfowlers typically use shotguns to shoot their prey, often setting up decoys to attract birds to their location. In addition to being a popular sport, wildfowling also provides an important food source for many people. Duck and geese meat is considered to be very tasty, and it can be cooked in a variety of different ways.

For those who enjoy hunting, wildfowling is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy some time in nature while also putting food on the table.

Respecting close season

We may have a different open season for different birds across the UK so we always check what is fair game at our locations. In the closed season, we are not allowed to hunt a specific bird, and this plays an important part in population regeneration.

We also take much care not to shoot any threatened species when wildfowling in the United Kingdom.

Pigeon Shooting

Pigeon shooting  is a popular sport in the UK. It involves shooting at pigeons that are released from a trap, typically with a shotgun. The sport can be traced back to medieval times and remains a popular pastime among Hunting enthusiasts. There are a number of benefits to pigeon shooting, including the fact that it helps to control the population of birds and improve crop harvest.

We can also hunt wood pigeons with our dogs flushing them from the woods or farms with woodland areas. This will provide an enjoyable day out for those hunters who participate.

Here at Shooting SH we have access to over 210'000 acres of land spread throughout the United Kingdom. If you want to shoot deer and learn how to stalk deer or get involved in walked up hunts, we have a variety of options to suit.

We can help you acquire your shotgun certificates and provide training at every step of the way if you are a newcomer to handling firearms in the UK.

Hunting in the UK is a fantastic opportunity to get out and really connect with the natural environment. We are lucky on these islands to have such a range of wildlife, and some of the best, most challenging game birds visit our shores.

Experience a Hunt

Hunting is a unique and adrenaline-pumping experience. It takes great skill, stealth, and knowledge of the animal you are pursuing. The thrill of the hunt can be addicting, as you never know when you will get your next chance to take an animal.

Hunting also requires patience, as you may sit in a tree stand for hours without seeing anything. But when you finally get a shot and see the animal drop, it is all worth it.

The feeling of success is indescribable. Hunting is not just about killing an animal but about being one with nature and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. It is an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime.

We offer a wide range of services and hunts in all the most popular hunting types. We have various hunting locations throughout the UK that will give you the best hunting experience possible. Take a look at the types of hunting we offer and where they are located below.

hunting trips in the uk

At the High Adventure Company, we know that the birds presented to you have to surpass your expectations and those of your companions. We also know that the hospitality has to be as good, if not better, than the shooting itself. To that end our dedicated team will ensure your day is relaxed, enjoyable and seamlessly organized providing additional services whenever required.

Upland Shooting

Your day starts with freshly brewed coffee and biscuits. Guests are then briefed on the day’s shoot.

A typical day will consist of three drives in the morning and two in the afternoon, not forgetting breaks for our renowned elevenses (champagne & sloe gin on the first break then soup, game pie and biscuits with plenty of soft drinks available throughout) followed by lunch in the comfort of our centrally heated lodges. Alternatively, if time is of the essence, guests may wish to shoot through and have lunch at the end of the day.

On departure the game keeper will present you with a complimentary brace of pre-dressed partridge or pheasant as well as a game card of the day.

The Hunting Estates ↗

Our eight shooting estates across the United Kingdom offer some of the best pheasant and partridge shooting in England and Wales. From the 17th century royal homes to their mountains and valleys, our English shooting estates will test even the best of shotgunners with their terrain, mystic and natural beauty.

hunting trips in the uk

The Seasons ↗

In England and Wales, we predominately shoot partridges and pheasants on our estates. The seasons for these are as follows:

  • Pheasants – October 1 to February 1
  • Partridges – September 1 to February 1

Bird Numbers ↗

Our clients can expect between 300 and 500 pheasants per day of shooting based on the estate. If you would like additional birds, we would be delighted to organize them for you.

Accommodations ↗

A good place to stay with warm hospitality, delicious food and an enviable wine list is just as important as the day’s shooting. Therefore, we are delighted to offer guests accommodations at our inn or estates in the area such as The Willows Lodge, The Beeches Lodge, Cherry Tree Cottage and The Brigands Inn. All are the perfect venue for shooting parties.

Whether you choose the Lodges or the Inn, we will ensure that your stay is memorable and we would be delighted to discuss any special requirements you may have to complete your shooting trip.

Weather & Travel ↗

The shooting season in the UK spans early autumn through the middle of winter. While there are many glorious sunny days to be had, there are also those which are wet and wild! Temperatures can therefore vary from 25 degrees Celsius down to freezing and slightly beyond in a particularly cold snap. Therefore, it pays to be prepared for all types of weather.

Plan on arriving at London Heathrow Airport. From there, you have the option of renting a car or we can arrange private transportation for you.

We can also assist with private plane or helicopter charters or we can organize your transfers from local rail stations. Whatever your requirements or travel plans, if you need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at High Adventure Company.

Pricing for shooting at our UK estates is done on a daily basis and includes accommodations, food and beverage. Prices will vary depending upon the estate, number of birds driven and available pegs. Private shoots exclusively for your party of eight or more can be arranged.

Additional Items & Expenses ↗

There are a few licenses and permits which you must have to enable you to shoot with us in England and Wales. All of these can be obtained by High Adventure Company with a lead time of at least four weeks.

Gun Permits: Anyone wishing to visit our estates to shoot must either have a British Shotgun Permit (if a UK resident) or a Visitor Shotgun Permit (if from oversees) and be accompanied by an estate loader if you have had less than five days shooting experience.

The Visitor Shotgun Permit (VSP) can easily be arranged and the sooner we have your details, including the gun details, the sooner we can ask the police to issue it.

Gun permits are relatively easy to obtain, but require at least four weeks notice.

Insurance: If you are shooting with us, you must have Personal Liability Insurance to a minimum of £5 million cover. This can again easily be arranged by High Adventure and we suggest that you get it from The Countryside Alliance. Insurance is an integral part of their membership and annual subscription: cost £45.

It has proven impossible to single a particular establishment out, such is the quality of hospitality on show up and down the country – just remember to check lockdown restrictions before you travel.

A scattering of honourable mentions go to Bereleigh under the brilliant William and Philippa Tyrwhitt-Drake, Ugbrooke Park under the erstwhile and charming butler Alex, and Linhope, where host Lord James Percy “understands the attention to detail superbly well”, according to Jason Abbott.

Sir Edward Dashwood, meanwhile, singles out an overseas experience: ”My most enjoyable overnight stay was in Iceland — when we got snowed in shooting ptarmigan in the mountains!”

hunting trips in the uk

And, even though the facilities are second-to-none — with new layouts including wild-flower meadows and a cosy bothy to relax in between stands — the main reason to visit Holland & Holland’s refurbished facility is the tuition services. As well as lessons, the shooting ground is also the perfect place for gun-fittings and a range of additional courses to improve performance in the field.

Best place for a shoot lunch...

A mouthwatering list of suggestions here, but a handful were worthy of particular mention. “Any lunch produced by Lizzie Kelvin-Hughes (she used to be the hostess at Knarsdale and previously at Maristow) or the picnic lunch of woodcock breast cooked on a stove in a railway hut at Slebech Estate” might just take the biscuit, writes Sir Edward Dashwood.

Simon Rood remembers a particular meal on the coldest day of the year at Sandringham: “The Duke of Edinburgh joined us for the most special lunch. So good and warming!” Jason Abbott, meanwhile, gives the nod to West Wycombe and its “delicious lunch in a lovely converted barn.”

The Joy of Red Deer Hunting in Scotland

The Scottish Highlands, with their breathtaking landscapes, add to the joy of the hunt. The tranquillity of the highlands, coupled with the excitement of the rutting season, makes for an unforgettable hunting experience. And at the end of the day, there’s nothing quite like sharing hunting stories around a warm fire.

Understanding the Scottish Red Deer

A successful hunt begins with understanding your quarry. With its majestic antlers and graceful movements, the Scottish red deer is a sight to behold. These deer play a crucial role in the ecosystem, and understanding their behaviour and habitat is critical to ethical hunting.

Every aspect of the red deer’s life is fascinating, from their mating behaviour to the threats they face. As hunters, we are responsible for ensuring these magnificent creatures’ conservation. This includes understanding the impact of climate change on the deer population and the role of hunting in population management.

Season for Red Stag Deer Stalking in Scotland

Timing is everything when it comes to red deer hunting in Scotland . The hunting season, regulated by law, is designed to ensure the sustainability of the deer population. Respecting the hunting season is not just a legal requirement; it’s a matter of ethics.

The weather conditions, the behaviour of the deer, and the rutting season all play a part in determining the best time for hunting. Preparation is critical – from understanding the regulations to packing the right gear. The Habitat

Understanding the habitat of the red deer is crucial to a successful hunt. The Scottish Highlands, with their rugged landscapes and diverse flora, provide the perfect habitat for the red deer. As hunters, we must understand how the habitat influences deer behaviour and movement.

Habitat conservation is a crucial aspect of ethical hunting. From the role of hunting estates in habitat management to the impact of human activity on deer habitat, every decision we make impacts the ecosystem. As we tread the path of the deer, let’s remember to tread lightly.

The Personal Touch

What sets red deer hunting in Scotland apart is the personal touch. From the moment you arrive at the hunting lodge to the moment you bag your first stag, you’ll experience the warmth and hospitality of the Scottish people.

Professional guides and stalkers, with their local knowledge and expertise, add a personal touch to the hunting experience. They ensure safety, teach ethical hunting practices, and share their love for the sport. It’s not just about the hunt; it’s about the people you meet and the friendships you form.

Planning a hunting trip involves understanding the costs involved. From the hunting fees to the cost of travel and equipment, every aspect of the hunt has a price. But remember, a hunting trip is more than just a financial investment; it invests in experiences and memories.

The pricing structure for deer stalking in Scotland is transparent and fair, reflecting the services’ value. Whether you’re planning a short trip or an extended vacation, there’s a hunting package that fits your budget. And as you invest in a hunting trip, you’re also investing in conserving the Scottish Highlands and its wildlife.

How to Start Hunting in the UK: Complete Beginners Guide

  • March 11, 2023
  • by Elite Travel Blog

Everything you need to know about the different types of hunting and our top tips for beginners.

No doubt, hunting is a fun game with a few couples of health benefits. Though the UK has some strict gun laws and you can only use an up to 12ft/lb air rifle, it can be intimidating to learn how to start hunting in the UK. For carrying your hunting gears safely and in an organized manner  Concealed Carry Backpack  can be a perfect option.

If you’ve never been a hunter or your family has encouraged you into this sport, it may seem overwhelming how to get into it. We’re here to help you out with the beginner’s guide and the checklist! So, keep your eyes glued till the end.

Based on Species

Based on firearm, rifle hunting,  bow hunting, make your decision, get your safety card, do research, do some practice, stay self-motivated, get your gear .

Types of Hunting: Learn Before You Start

When it comes to hunting, you’ll find a few categories of it. Various types of species are divided into those categories. So, what are the main categories? Let’s see

For getting started into the game, you should decide which animal you would like to hunt so that you can gather knowledge on the specific animal and its hunt. Ex: if you like to hunt doves, look for “dove hunting tips for beginners” to help yourself get started.

Choosing the right firearm is a must for beginners. Spending money on an entry-level weapon can be the best bet for you. So, what are the types of hunting based on firearms? Well, there are two types- rifle hunting and bowhunting.

Rifle hunting is easier compared to bow hunting for beginners as it’s easy to grip a rifle and to make a kill with. When you’re rifle hunting, you don’t need to pack a bulky amount of things in your backpack.

The downside of rifle hunting is the noise you make. The noise will scare the animals of the area and you won’t be able to hunt more than one game.

Cost is the primary concern to beginner rifle hunters as they don’t have thousands of pounds to spend on a rifle. So, set your budget first and go for the best hunting rifle for beginners for getting started

Pay attention to your rifle’s accuracy because your hunting success depends on your accurate shooting. Opt for additional accessories for the target accuracy like sniper scopes if needed.

Be careful about the laws and licensing before you head out to hunt. As said before, unlike the US, the UK has strict gun laws. In the US, using a semi-automated is considered as their right while you could go to jail in the UK if anyone sees you have one.

Get close to nature and in touch with the primal essence with bow hunting. In bowhunting, accuracy is more important. Although less power is involved, the bow hunting checklist can be longer.

As with rifle hunting, choosing the right beginner’s crossbow is vital. Consider what you need between compound bows and recurve bows before heading out to purchase one of the best powerful crossbows.

Also choosing the right arrows for your crossbow is important. Remember- crossbow bolts come with various lengths and flight abilities. Pick one according to your game and the bow you’re using.

Safety should be the primary concern when it comes to crossbow hunting. Going on a safety course is recommended to learn how to operate your weapon and how to stay safe.

How to Start Hunting in the UK: The Ultimate Guide

Among a load of different hunting types, decide what you can do. Decide one from bird hunting, small game hunting, or large game hunting based on your skills. Also, choose one from crossbow hunting and rifle hunting.

You have to have a clear idea of the hunting you’re going to pursue before heading out. Consult few people for an idea of what type of hunting is the best suit for you.

In the UK, you should have a hunter safety card to start hunting. For claiming the card, a certified hunter education course is a must. The card indicates that you’ve successfully passed through the safety education.

The certification course isn’t too expensive and you can get the course done online at your home. Once you get the card, you’ll be able to go hunt anywhere you want.

Doing extensive research and talking to the veteran hunters will help you gain more knowledge about the sport. Ask them about the best gear, the best time of hunting, and their experience. Experts would love to help a newbie like you.

Also, search online for pro tips on hunting and to help yourself gain knowledge on the species you want to hunt.

Practice makes a man perfect. Right? Practice using your weapon a lot to make your hunt more enjoyable. Be patient to be familiar with the animal behavior you want to hunt. Practice hunting in different areas to master your hunting skills because every hunt is different based on experience.

Your first hunting can be disheartened. It can be messing or missing up that you didn’t want. Not a big deal. Also, the veteran hunters don’t always go to plan. Remember – all humans make mistakes and you’re no different. There will be some things that you’ll not be able to control.

So, if you fail in your first hunt, don’t be frustrated. Give yourself time, be self-motivated, and prepare for the next.

There’s a bulky amount of accessories to be needed when you start hunting. Before heading out to your first hunt, make sure that you have got all the essentials on your backpack.

Having the right equipment can make a difference. For hunting in the UK, add your license and the shooting permit to your checklist. Opt for a 12 ft/lb air rifle and if you want to carry a pistol, according to the laws of the UK, it should be 6 ft/lb.

Hopefully, this article will help you to get started with hunting in the UK. If you have any queries, feel free to ask in the comment section below! Happy hunting!

Shooting in Scotland

Scotland is world famous for many different reasons, one of which has got to be the scenery.  you could travel the world and still not find anywhere as breath takinly beautiful, steeped in mystery and history, every glen has a castle with hundreds of years of history., scotland has a wide range of animals to hunt but red stags have to be top of every hunters list.  it is scotlands largest mammal and with no natural predators these beasts are free to rome all over the uk but because there's no natural predators these magnificent animals have to be controlled by hunters and if this isn't enough roe deer, sika deer, fallow deer, goat, wild boar and fox are also available.  , scotland is also well known for producing some of the best bird hunting in the world this includes pheasant, partridge, duck, woodcock, snipe, but without a doubt the red grouse shooting has been perfected to such a high standard that any bird hunter would consider a days driven grouse to be a 'bucket list' event., single pegs and full days available september to january 200 to 300 birds days, here at royal outfitters uk we have excellent connections and on the rare occasion we have availability to hunt racka sheep, mouflon sheep, european bison and even a 20 point parkland stag , for more details on hunting one of these special species please contact me as each beast has its own price depending on the trophy. .

Welcome to Scrofa Boar Hunting

Wild Boar Hunting at its Best

In the beginning

Having spent virtually all of my life living, working and shooting in the countryside and having enjoyed most forms of hunting for the past 40 years or more, I have spent a great deal of my time over the last decade in the pursuit of driven wild boar in various countries across Europe. Although there is a wide range of approaches to the management of wild boar populations and these vary from country to country, there is one thing in my experience that everyone involved in these activities has in common and that is their passion for wild boar.

As with most things in life there is a learning curve, which starts from nothing and continues on indefinitely. My own experiences and those gleaned from other people involved in wild boar hunting have made me into a much more proficient hunter, but I am always learning.

I started hunting wild boar some 10 years ago and participated in several “package” trips to places like Croatia, Lithuania and Germany. Mostly I enjoyed my early experiences, but the learning curve was steep! The biggest problem for me was getting full facts and detailed information about trips in advance and getting the sporting agents to be honest at all times!!

Scrofa Hunting was born

Some 6 years ago I decided to organise my own trip to Hungary and have not looked back. Now I run several trips each winter to hunt driven wild boar, mainly to Hungary, but other countries also. My main rule is that I only organise trips on which I will be hunting. Most of the hunters are regular guests and become friends but of course,  that isn’t to say that other people cannot join our group!

Similarly, some of the hunters in the group are very experienced boar hunters, but we all have to learn from scratch. So don’t be put off if you’re a relative novice, give me a call and talk it through. Subject to demand, I plan to run a number of half day seminars to discuss the intricacies of driven hunting abroad and what is required from the hunter to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

  • Testimonials

Can I say that the times I have been hunting boar with you, the trips have been run very well and I have not been disappointed in any way. The places where we have stayed have been very clean and tidy, the food excellent and the company as well.

Very satisfied we went home to Belgium , but decided then already to return next year.

Thanks for a brilliant trip to Kemence, the organisation & hunting was first class, plenty of animals, good scenery & a good group of guys to be away with, book me in for next season.

The Living Project’s Josh Bulpin enjoying the view on Knoydart.

We revel in the remoteness: wild camping and hiking in the Scottish Highlands

A five-day mindful adventure on the Knoydart peninsula – one of the last great wildernesses in the UK – offers the chance to fully unwind and leap into the unknown

I t’s a relief to lay my rucksack down, plunge hot feet into the cool stream and pause to revel in the fairytale surrounds. Foxgloves stand tall against a cornflower-blue sky, ferns look almost luminous, the water glints in the early summer sunshine. A patch of moss-covered ancient forest provides shade, a cuckoo calls in the distance, mountains layer on the horizon.

I’m in Knoydart in the Highlands of western Scotland, one of the last great wildernesses in the UK, on a hiking and wild camping adventure. No roads cross the 22,000-hectare (55,000-acres) peninsula, a rugged place where a trio of Munros soar skyward, sandwiched between sea lochs Nevis and Hourn (poetically translated as heaven and hell). Over five days our group of eight will explore this land on foot, carrying our sustenance and shelter on our backs, led by two guides from The Living Project, Josh and Emily.

The rest of the world feels very far away as we linger over lunch before continuing to Barrisdale Bay farther north. Today’s hike is about eight miles over undulating terrain. An old drover’s way leads up past a loch where Highland cattle drink and we climb a 450-metre pass before descending to the coast once more. We take our time, stopping often, sometimes chatting, sometimes walking in silence. The going gets tough at points, packs feel heavy, but a sense of freedom, a revelling in the remoteness, trumps any fatigue.

Set up in 2019 by Josh Bulpin and Cormac Davey (former colleagues at World Challenge Expeditions), the Living Project offers “mindful adventures in wild places,” with trips ranging from women-only weekends in Snowdonia to weeks in Nepal. The emphasis is on connecting to nature, not epic feats of endurance, with yoga, meditation and journal writing woven into our days.

“We combine adventure and wellbeing, giving people the chance to challenge themselves, but focus very much on the journey and moving slowly through the landscape,” says Josh. “It’s not about racing up summits.”

Our trip began two days earlier in Fort William, where we’re encouraged to ditch any excess luggage. Most equipment, from tents to cooking utensils, as well as food (fresh and dried) is provided. While you don’t need experience, with packs weighing upwards of 15kg and several hours walking a day on the itinerary, a decent level of fitness is advised. Our group consists of four guys celebrating a 40th birthday, and three women and a man, ranging from mid-30s to early 60s, travelling solo. For many of us, it’s a first multi-day hike.

Wild camping beside a loch on Knoydart

Wild camping is permitted in Scotland and you could, of course, do this independently. But having everything taken care of, and knowing you’re in safe hands, makes it easy to focus on the simple challenges of hiking and the wonder of the wild surrounds.

To reach Knoydart we take a train to Mallaig from Fort William – crosssing Harry Potter-famed Glenfinnan viaduct – then a ferry across to Inverie, the only settlement on the peninsula, home to around 120 people. After pitching tents on the shore at Long Beach, where mirror-flat water reflects the pinks and blues of the sky, we walk to the Lookout seafood restaurant for dinner.

The next day dawns clear and bright for the hike to Barrisdale. After gentle yoga on the beach, Emily shares the first daily question to ponder as we walk (“Why am I here?”), and we set off into the wilderness. Soon we pass a hilltop monument to the notorious former landowner and Nazi sympathiser Lord Brocket; today much of Knoydart is community-owned after a buyout in 1999.

Our camp for the night is next to the bothy at Barrisdale Bay. We wash in the river and prepare dinner alfresco, chopping fresh veg and halloumi as the setting sun washes everything gold.

Preparing dinner at the end of a day’s hike

Our trip coincides with a heatwave in Scotland – and routes are always adapted to suit the weather and group needs. So, given soaring temperatures, we spend the next day exploring locally, pack-free, instead of moving on. Maps are pored over and soon Josh and Emily have a plan – a path neither of them have walked before.

We wind our way up the hillside, rising to open views over Loch Hourn. Further on we’re delighted to discover a series of waterfalls and plunge pools and spend a magical couple of hours clambering over rocks and dipping into crystal waters – a welcome respite from the heat. A thunderstorm soaks us on the hike home, its sudden power adding to the wildness of the day. That evening we cook in the bothy kitchen – an escape from the rain and the midges which plague us at sunset and sunrise (it’s June and the weather has made it a bumper midge year).

The next morning we pack up early and head off, slowly climbing again into the hills. The landscape is staggering – and there’s no one else around. A small creature stares at me from the valley below as I stop to rest – a pine marten perhaps? Buzzards ride air thermals in the sky above. Thoughts fall away as I focus on the feeling of the sun on my face and the utter peace of the mountains.

Hiking across the peninsula towards Barrisdale

Our final wild camp is by a loch and we paddle out through mud and reeds for a swim in silky waters. I pitch my tent a little way from the others on the sandy shore. Looking out across the water, I could be the only person around.

It’s with mixed emotions that we arrive back in Inverie after a short hike the next morning. There’s time for quiet contemplation on the beach before the boat back to Mallaig and the need to re-engage with the rest of the world. We’re a little dirty, midge-bitten and sunburnt, but relaxed and happy as we head back to civilisation and a hotel with hot showers and clean sheets.

A final slap-up supper together is lively and fun. But beneath the chatter and laughter, the stillness and expansive sense of the wild remains. I think back to Emily’s first question: “Why was I there?” To escape from the world for a bit, to slow down, to leap into the unknown, immersed in nature. Knoydart has provided all that and more – a rekindling of wonder and deep feeling of peace; something I want to cling on to for a long time.

The trip was provided by The Living Project . The next Wild Pilgrim trip to Knoydart (for women only ) runs from 2-7 June 2024 ; or on 8-13 September 2024 (for all) and costs £975 , including all food while camping , two restaurant meals , one night in a hotel , most equipment, ferry crossings and trains to and from Fort William .
