Review: MS Roald Amundsen

Roald Amundsen from Hurtigruten ship

Reviewed by Jonny Bierman

What is the line?  Hurtigruten Expeditions

Name of ship?  MS Roald Amundsen

Passenger occupancy?  550

Itinerary?  Alaska and British Columbia – Inside Passage, Bears and Aleutian Islands

MS Roald Amundsen is an expedition ship that bridges innovation and sustainability with comfort and luxury.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Hurtigruten is known for expedition travel to some of the most remote places in the world. The Norwegian company originated more than 125 years ago by moving goods and mail between northern and southern Norway. As travel evolved, people caught on to the fact that sailing on a mail ship was a great way to see the Norwegian coastline. Hurtigruten’s deep European roots make it a popular choice amongst adventurous Europeans.

Tell us about the ship in general   MS Roald Amundsen is a 550-passenger luxury expedition travel ship that was launched in 2019. The class six icebreaker is the world’s first battery-powered, hybrid-electric cruise ship that bridges luxury amenities with sustainability in a feat of engineering that has been pioneered by Hurtigruten. The ship uses two electric engines for propulsion that are powered using a mix of two battery banks and four high-efficiency diesel generators. This technology amounts to a reduction of up to 20% in fuel consumption or 1,100,000 liters of fuel per year.

MS Roald Amundsen is equipped with a “ Ferrybox ” which takes water samples from the ship's intake system to measure salinity, temperature, dissolved organic matter, turbidity, phytoplankton, and microplastics. Because Hurtigruten explores some of the most remote waters in the world, measuring this data as part of the Norwegian Ships of Opportunity Program for the  Norwegian Institute for Water Research is crucial for scientific research.

Everything about this ship is Scandanavian-inspired from the decor in the rooms to the restaurants, spa, and sauna. On the rooftop deck, you’ll find a running track that spans almost the entire length of the ship. Just below it at the stern is a heated infinity pool, two hot tubs, and a bar with a large observation deck. The pool, sauna, hot tubs, and all water on the ship are heated with recuperation technology from water that is used to cool the generators ensuring little to no energy is wasted. Excess food, organic waste, and grey and black water are refined using an enzymatic digestion system that ultimately processes the matter to a liquid that is clear as water so no harmful waste enters the sea.

Who is onboard?

Hurtigruten's guests come from all over the world, but its Scandinavian roots draw a strong mix of European languages and accents. While most adventurers are couples and empty-nesters, it's not uncommon to see young adventurers and bucket listers alike. Most commonly, guests had sailed the Norwegian Coastal Voyage and Antarctica with Hurtigruten and were back for more.

Describe the cabins

50% of the cabins have private balconies and the aft suites feature private outdoor hot tubs. I was in an Arctic Superior suite which had a spacious bathroom with heated floors, a balcony spanning the width of the room, a Nespresso machine, and a wine rack stocked with complimentary wine at the beginning of the expedition. The couch at the foot of the king-sized bed made for a great spot to lounge and watch presentations that were streamed to the TV if I didn’t feel like watching them in person.    (Where you stayed and a brief overview of what else is available to book)

Tell us about the crew

Due to Alaskan coastguard rules, the expedition staff must be certified Alaskan guides which made for a very knowledgeable crew. Among the crew were scientists, biologists, and anthropologists who provided daily talks about the flora, fauna, and history of the places we were visiting. Other staff who were full-time with Hurtigruten outside of their Alaska itineraries were extremely passionate, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The crew had a passion for conservation and adventure which led some staff to working for Hurtigruten due to their shared values. The hotel and restaurant staff on the ship were equally great and knew me by name after the first day of the trip.

What food and drink options are available on board?

MS Roald Amundsen has three restaurants, an indoor bar on the observation deck, and an outdoor bar if weather permitted. Given the Scandanavian origins of Hurtigruten, the food at the two main restaurants of Aune and Lindstrøm have a European flair that I very much appreciated. Lunch and dinner were quality three-course meals with complimentary wine pairings that were the perfect amount to fuel excursions without needing a nap after. The bar is stocked with the Norweigian spirit  Aquavit for signature cocktails and fresh cake was served daily with coffee and tea on the observation deck.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Our 17-day voyage meant having a few spa-worthy days at sea. Permitting rough waters, the spa is definitely worth a visit for one of the many European-inspired treatments.

Activities and entertainment

You won’t find a casino or stage on this ship. Instead, expedition staff will give talks about nature in the theatre or use the state-of-the-art technology in the Amundsen Science Centre to take a deeper look at the flora and fauna in the surrounding destination. We learned about Indigenous Alaskan cultures, the migratory patterns of humpback whales, the geology of volcanos.

How was the experience for families?

There were only one or two families on this expedition. If families are considering this trip, I would recommend going with kids who are older and will appreciate the experience in nature.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

This expedition sailed from Vancouver, British Columbia to Nome, Alaska over the course of 17 days and visited parts of Alaska that the big cruise lines cannot access. Only once did we see other tourists as whilst in Sitka, but otherwise, this trip was true expedition travel to Alaska's most remote coastal regions. Wildlife outnumbered people as we explored Katmai National Park, the Aleutian Islands, and the islands of St Matthew and St Lawrance in the Bering Sea.

Among the excursions were kayaking trips amongst icebergs and fjords, guided hiking, self-guided tours in coastal towns like Sitka, and wildlife viewing from the ship’s zodiacs. Bear viewing in Katmai National Park, floating amongst icebergs in Icy Bay, visiting the remote island of St. Matthew in the Bering Sea, and visiting the Siberian Yupik Village of Savoonga were among the highlights of this trip.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

In addition to the innovation and sustainability initiatives mentioned above,  The Hurtigruten Foundation has over 50 projects in 12 countries that engage in conservation and community empowerment projects that help ensure regenerative tourism is leaving the places they explore better than how they found them. An example of the foundation at work while at sea is ocean cleanups. While we visited St Matthew Island in the middle of the Bering Sea, Hurtigruten initiated a cleanup for those who wanted to participate. The crew and guests carried out over 1000 pounds of washed-up trash that otherwise would still be there.

Anything we missed

The observation deck has been elegantly designed to provide maximum wildlife and scenery viewing potential. I loved having a daily nightcap up here while a fellow passenger played the piano and the summer sun illuminated the surroundings well into the evening.

Another stand-out moment was when we saw over 100 humpback whales feeding. The captain killed the engines and we drifted—something only a small ship expedition could do. Our expedition leaders and biologists identified whales from Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico.

Why is the cruise worth booking?

This is not your typical Alaskan cruise. The Aleutians’ raw and rutted beauty is unlike anything else, and Hurtigruten Expeditions led with its values of sustainability and innovation without sacrificing quality or comfort. This trip set the bar very high for me and I would recommend the ship, company, and destination to anyone.

Your purchases will be returned to you and   delivered to your cabin on the last day of  your   sailing.

There are a wide range of comfortable cabins on board for you. You may experience some noise and vibration in some of the cabins. This varies depending on the location of your cabin. Noise affects people differently and what may be a problem for one guest may not be a problem for others. Please be aware that some cabins on decks with passenger access or lifesaving equipment may have an obstructed view.

The tap water in your cabin is potable.

Cruise card

You will be issued a cruise card upon arrival on board as part of the check-in procedure in accordance with ISPS regulations. All our guests are requested to wear this card when disembarking the ship in all ports of call and landings. The card serves as a control system on the gangway, enabling the ship to know which of our guests are on board or ashore at any time. This card, in addition to being the key card for your cabin, is also your payment card on board. The card is the only means of payment for the onboard facilities. To activate the cruise card account, you must have a Visa, Diners, or MasterCard.

The evening before the cruise ends, the account will be totalled and settled on board and a receipt will be emailed to you. All our published plans are subject to change.

Please note the use of passenger-operated drones is not permitted during your voyage. This is for   general safety as well as the protection of the vulnerable wildlife and other guests’ personal security.

Electricity

The plugs in your cabins are all 220V/50hz. Suites have 110V for shavers. The plugs are continental two pin plugs, which may require an adapter.

Equipment rentals

On many of our expedition cruises we are landing in areas covered with snow. Terrain might be muddy, uneven, wet, and very slippery. The weather may be inclement and cold. This is part of being an explorer.

In Antarctica, it is mandatory to use rubber boots for all landings. For nature landings in Arctic Canada or other locations, rubber boots are recommended. A pair of special purpose boots can be borrowed on board free of charge for the duration of your cruise, and we will make sure that they are rinsed and declared clean from seeds and other biological material after every landing. This is to avoid unintentionally spreading invasive species into fragile environments. We carry sizes from 32 to 50. If you need a smaller or larger size than this, or prefer to wear your own boots, you are welcome to bring private rubber boots, but please be advised that our Expedition Team will have them checked before going ashore, to make sure they are suitable for landing.

We also lend out walking sticks on board. If you are more comfortable using your own walking sticks, bring them along with you, but bear in mind that they must be properly cleaned and disinfected after every landing.

Hurtigruten App

The Hurtigruten APP is your digital guide onboard, it is recommended to download it before you come onboard, To be able to follow the activities on board, make restaurant reservation, book excursions and find A-Z info here from the minute you step onboard. The App will only work while you are on board as it is connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi.

Internet Usage and Mobile Phones

We offer Wi-Fi on board. But on expedition cruises to remote destinations, coverage and speed will be very limited. Internet will be provided through a satellite connection (if in sight), except when we’re close to mobile communication infrastructure on land. Due to capacity limitations, the included Wi-Fi is limited to browsing and not streaming. Please contact the reception desk if you have any questions related to Wi-Fi usage.

The areas we sail in have poor mobile connections, or in some cases there are none available on shore. Check with your carrier for details.

The working language on board is English. Announcements and written information may also be given in French, German and Chinese on selected departures. Lectures will be streamed into the cabins.

This service is free of charge for all suite guests. There is no self-service laundry for guest. Instead, you will be provided a laundry form that you need to fill out. Prices are listed on this form.

Lifesaving equipment, life vests and safety on board

The ship complies with international safety requirements, and is a modern vessel suitable for sailing in the respective destinations, including icy waters.

All guests will be instructed in safety procedures and the use and location of the safety equipment before departure. There is a Safety Notice posted on the inside of the cabin door which we encourage all guests to read carefully.

During the sailing, special safety regulations will apply on landings with the Expedition boats. Please follow the instructions given by the Expedition Leader and crew/staff. Special lifejackets for use during landings will be provided to all passengers. A mandatory briefing regarding the safety guidelines will also be given.

You can hand in your mail at the reception, and for the cost of stamps we will forward the post in every port where possible. The time needed  for delivery of mail may be relatively long. Hurtigruten  Expeditions   accepts   no responsibility for lost mail.

Food & Beverage

On board, we serve a delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all in accordance with your daily programme. Mealtimes will be announced in the daily programme. In the Restaurants we are working with time slots. We are asking kindly all guests to book their time slots with the Headwaiter or via our Hurtigruten App. Please provide information regarding special requests for seating arrangements and dietary requirements to your sales office/travel agent before your cruise.

Seasickness

Seasickness pills are available in reception. If you are prone to seasickness ,  it is recommended that you bring pills that you are familiar with. You may also buy “sea bands” on board.

Hurtigruten complies with the ISPS-regulations (International Ship and Port Security System) where all luggage is subject to X-ray/metal detector inspection upon arrival at the port facility or ship. If not included, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. We can offer upgrades to business class on some routes. Depending on the airline, this may also include seats with more legroom. Upgrades are not available on all flights. Luggage allowance varies between airlines and charges may apply if you exceed this limit, or carriage may be refused. As a general rule, each guest can carry a piece of hand luggage weighing approx. 6-8 kg (dimensions and weight depend on the respective airline) on board. Your baggage allowance is set to 1PC (23 kg) but may vary depending on the flight connection; please check with your airline. Further transport guidelines can be found in the respective terms and conditions of our flight partners. If you are planning to take a wheelchair or need assistance at the airport, please advise us at the time of booking. Flights may be scheduled early in the morning or late in the evening, as they are adapted to our travel arrangements and cruises. Please note that some flights may require transfers or stopovers. Our common flight partners are Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM/Air France, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines, LATAM, Iberia, and Iceland Air. The price for the overnight  stay  includes breakfast ,  unless otherwise stated  on your confirmation.

Medical facilities

All guests must have personal travel/health insurance. If you depend on medication, remember to bring sufficient supplies to last through any unforeseen delays. We also recommend that you keep your medication in your hand luggage, properly labelled, and with clear instructions for its use. If you depend on vital medication, please inform the ship’s doctor upon arrival. Illness on board can lead to quarantine, and orders from the captain must be followed.

Passport and visa requirements

Please take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. It is the sole responsibility of the guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents ,  and have them available when necessary. A passport is the only valid identification. At check-in on board, passports will be collected in order to clear immigrations and customs. It is the responsibility of each guest to ensure they comply with any visa travel document requirements at the time of travel.  Please pay  special   attention to the ESTA/ETA regulations for our North America and Canada  cruises . See details here.

Vaccinations

Medical questionnaire (mandatory)

A Health Declaration Form is required for some of our expedition cruises and expedition destinations. Please see our Entry Requirements page for full details.

Transfers are included as shown in your booked arrangement (please see your booking confirmation). Hurtigruten offers bus transfers from the airport to the pier and some hotels. The transfer times are set according to the ship’s arrival and departure times, and your arrival and departure times. Delays at the airport are possible. The duration of the airport transfer can vary depending on the destination, but it takes usually between 45-60 minutes (depending on traffic). Exceptions are possible where a longer transfer time is needed, due to a greater distance between airport and port. With your travel documents you will receive further information on your transfer.

For guests who are not fully mobile, wheelchair accessible transfers are available on request.

What to wear

On board dress is informal. For all expedition cruises, we advise you to bring breathable rain and windproof clothing.  A warm hat, gloves, scarf, and thermal clothing including thermal underwear can be useful, when sailing to cold  destinations. .  Sturdy shoes are important for shore excursions  and landings,  and a walking stick/trekking pole may be useful.    For additional information about footwear, see separate point “Equipment loans” .

Welcome on board

Soon you will embark MS Roald Amundsen for an adventure of a lifetime. Here are 10 tips to make you prepared and get the most out of your expedition.

1. Get to know the ship

Familiarise yourself with the ship, take the virtual tour of our hybrid expedition ship.

2. Check-in made easy

In the areas we sail, internet via satellite will not be of the standard and quality you can experience for example on an airplane.

To make WiFi available for all guests, we have to limit activities like video streaming and file sharing.

For those regions where it is hard to connect to the internet, your family and friends back home can still  see where the ship is at all times .

4. The daily programme

You'll therefore receive your daily programme one day at a time, usually the evening before or sometimes the same morning.

As an explorer, you'll embrace this unpredictability. It's all part of being on an expedition, where every day is an adventure.

We recommend you download the Hurtigruten onboard app . It includes everything about your cruise, including your excursion bookings, the daily programme and services on board.

Download app

5. lectures, 6. gym, wellness center, sauna, and pool area.

You can book directly in the Wellness Center or at Reception.

Feel free to also make use of the ship’s other facilities which do not require booking: indoor gym (Deck 7), sauna, infinity pool, hot tubs (Deck 10), and outdoor running track (Deck 11).

7. Restaurant Aune

Occasionally, in order to meet landing schedules, we will opt for a delicious evening dinner buffet instead of a set dinner.

For our guests, we know that if you have to choose between sitting down for a set dinner or going on a landing in a remote region to see rare wildlife up close, the latter will win every time.

8. Restaurant Fredheim

In Fredheim you are welcome to relax in informal atmosphere or get to know your fellow travellers while enjoying great food together. The menu will vary throughout your journey. In addition to the restaurant's signature dishes, you may also order the dishes served in Aune main dining. Fredheim is included for all our guests. Normally open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

9. Restaurant Lindstrøm

The ships à la carte restaurant serves exquisite lunch and dinners every day and welcome all guests to book their tables on board. The skilled chefs in Lindstrøm rotate an 8-day set menu throughout your voyage.

Meals are included for suite guests and offered to all other guests for an additional charge. In addition, Lindstrøm offers the suite guests à la carte breakfast in the morning as an alternative to the breakfast served in Aune main dining.

Dietary requests

If you have any special dietary requests, please inform us before departing for your expedition. We will try to accommodate all individual needs as much as possible.

However, please understand that we cannot guarantee that all requirements can be catered for within the limitations of an expedition.

10. Enjoy onboard activities

There will also be some time where you are left to entertain yourself.

We advise you to bring the book(s) you always wanted to read, but never had time to, or maybe your favourite playing cards or board games.

The ship offers a book collection of Polar History in the library section of the Science Center on Deck 6. You can also relax and enjoy the great scenery in the Explorer Bar on deck 10.

We recommend you download the Hurtigruten onboard app to get even more out of your expedition. It includes everything about your cruise, including your excursion bookings, the daily programme and services on board.

The app is available in English and German and can be downloaded in the App Store or Google Play.

We are sailing on reduced passenger capacity and have changed how we run our restaurants, landings and facilities to give you more space.

All our crew wear face masks or face shields and follow the strictest hand sanitation protocol.

Expedition: All crew need to show negative Covid-19 test prior to embarkation. Coastal: All crew need to go through regular fever checks and fill out a self-declaration form.

We regularly disinfect the entire ship, including all cabins, using certified cleaning products.

What you do

You must confirm you do not have any Covid-19 symptoms before being allowed to board.

Upon embarkation and outside our restaurants, you will go through a contactless fever scan to record your temperature. You will need to agree to be tested if the fever scan indicates a high temperature.

Before embarkation, you will need to show a negative Covid-19 test, no older than 72 hours.

You need to wear a face mask in all common areas of the ship, keep a minimum of 1 metre distance to fellow passengers and frequetly sanitize your hands.

COMMENTS
