Finding the right yoga mat is like reaching nirvana — once you do you’ll be in a state of bliss. Find one you can also travel with and that’s just icing on the cake. We tapped Mandy Ingber, yoga instructor and author of Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover to give us the scoop on what attributes you should look for in your next mat purchase. Ingber, who has been the yogi to several A-List celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale, suggested we make design, comfort, grip, and portability the standards we swear by, noting to pay special attention to things like a mat’s thickness, which if too clunky, can throw off your balance, and whether or not your mat feels like a Slip 'N Slide (not in a good way) or helps you stick your poses with no problems.

Armed with all of this insider information, we tested 40 different mats during multiple yoga sessions, taking careful notes and paying special attention to attributes like excellent balance of cushion and support, great grip, and portable features that made them easy to transport. Check out our favorite yoga mats for travel below.

Best Overall

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

It has a cushy and supportive feel.

The rubber smell, though slight, was bothersome.

When it comes to thickness, consider the Aeromat Elite Yoga/Pilates Mat to be the “just right” porridge, chair, and bed that Goldilocks commandeered in the classic kid’s fairytale. There’s just enough material to support and cushion your body as you flow from pose to pose, but not so much that it gets in your way or inhibits your ability to make solid contact with the floor. It also boasts a textured finish that ensures a secure grip, especially when things get wet. We were able to work up a good sweat without our hands and feet sliding around during testing. The surface also has built-in mesh to help your mat retain its shape. And when you’re ready to pack up and go: sling one of 12 calming hues (think celeste, dusty rose, sea glass green, and chai) across your shoulder (a harness is included with purchase). It’s super lightweight — essential for any portable exercise equipment — so toting it around will be as easy as child’s pose.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Jade yoga jade voyager mat.

  • Design 3.9 /5
  • Comfort 3 /5

The great grip keeps hands and feet in place no matter the pose.

Sensitive to smells? This mat has a strong rubbery one that lingers.

There’s nothing worse than having to constantly flow in and out of a pose to wipe the water away from your sweaty hands or feet. The Jade Yoga Voyager solves for this in two ways: its opened-cell surface easily soaks up excess moisture while the textured natural rubber enhances grip. Also, weighing in at just over 1.5 pounds, this lightweight pick is the perfect on-the-go partner, whether you’re headed down the street or across the country for a wellness retreat . Plus it folds down to the size of a yoga block , which makes storing it in a shoulder bag or a suitcase that much easier. Even better: every time you make it to the mat, you’ll know you’re doing so with Mother Earth in mind because this eco-friendly mat not only does away with synthetic rubbers (that’s right no PVC or EVA), using the natural kind by extracting the latex sap from rubber trees, but the brand also plants a tree for every mat sold.

Best Portable

Nike training mat 2.0.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

A little longer than an average yoga mat, it can accommodate folks up to six feet tall while still being super easy to carry.

While the extra cushion is great for bony joints, it does make balancing poses extra challenging.

Nothing can put the kibosh on a Zen practice quicker or be more cumbersome than a yoga mat that constantly keeps unfurling while you’re on the way to your next class. Thankfully, the convenient, adjustable strap that comes with the Nike Training Mat 2.0 helps manage this issue, allowing us to wrap it around both ends of the neatly rolled mat and comfortably carry this cushy two-pounder without experiencing any shoulder discomfort. Even better, for yogis who do a myriad of floor workouts (think Pilates, stretching, core work, and more), this high-density foam mat stands in the gap, making it an extremely versatile and well-padded option. In fact, it was so cushioned that we thought it could double up as a sleeping pad for camping , but the downside is that it may be a challenging surface for balance exercises.

Best Lightweight

Lululemon the lightweight 5mm yoga mat.

  • Portability 4.9 /5

This mat offers a solid, firm grip without being sticky.

If you’re a heavy sweater, you may want to steer clear because it tends to get slippery.

Don’t let this thin, featherlike yoga mat — which is light enough to take anywhere you want to flow — fool you: it’s still supportive and cushy enough to handle every pose from camel to headstand. The hundreds of mini rectangular nubs covering the top of the mat’s surface will help guide your hand and foot grip so you can easily maintain your balance in each of these poses and beyond.

We found this mat very easy to roll out and roll up, and it was supremely lightweight to carry. One thing to note is that the closed cell design doesn’t allow for the absorption of sweat, which can make this mat extra slippery. However, the mat was easy to clean post practice — simply wipe it down with a damp cloth to keep dirt, stains, and bacteria at bay.

The Details: 26 x 71 x 19 inches | 3.3 pounds | Foam

Best for Hot Yoga

Jadeyoga travel yoga mat.

This lightweight mat, which comes in two sizes, is easy to carry, so you won’t have trouble toting it to and from yoga class.

For multi-hour practice days, this thin mat may lack sufficient support.

When it comes to hot yoga, you should expect to sweat. While this may be good for helping to cool down your body, major water works also leave you open to slipping and sliding across your mat, which is a definite no-no, no matter what the position. Luckily, the Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat helps keep you grounded, literally, thanks to its open cell construction, which absorbs moisture, combined with its micro ribbed surface that offers a supreme grip. After testing this mat, we loved it for its exceptional grip that was suitable even with our sweaty palms. We also thought it felt lightweight, easy to carry, and we think it would stay rolled up in transit due to its grippy texture. Feel good environmental bonus: for every mat sold, the company plants a tree.

Best for Beginners

Newme fitness instructional yoga mat.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

If you routinely deal with sweaty palms, this moisture-wicking mat will help rein in that excess water.

This mat molds to your body, leaving an imprint that doesn’t instantly go away.

Being a beginner in a room full of established yogis can feel super intimidating, but newbies can practice with more confidence thanks to the NewMe Fitness Yoga Mat. Doubling as an asana crib sheet, this handy yoga mat has 70 printed pictures of poses (think crow, cow face, corpse, among others) with their corresponding names in both English and Sanskrit emblazoned across its expansive surface. So, whether you need a quick refresher mid-class or help decoding what move the teacher is asking you to perform (we’re talking about you Chaturanga Dandasana!), this mat has got your covered. We also thought this affordable mat had a great grip that kept our hands in place and felt just as grippy as mats twice the price. It was very easy to roll up and carry around as well.

The Details: 68 x 24 x 0.2 inches | 2.6 pounds | PVC

Gaiam Premium Reversible Lunar Wave Yoga Mat

  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

It features an antimicrobial, waterproof layer that is moisture-wicking and nonslip.

This mat is on the thin side, so if your knees or wrists need extra cushion and support, go with another pick.

The small raised nodes covering this mat’s dual-textured sides gives it a gummy feeling that offers greater traction for hands and feet to keep you steady so you don’t slip. The result: a tremendous grip that verges on almost feeling sticky at times. Don’t let those little nodes fool you, though; they are tiny enough that they won’t disturb those peaceful moments on the mat, not even while you’re letting the day’s work sink in during Savasana. Did we mention we are also moonstruck by the stunningly painted design of moons in its many forms? FYI: if you are a visually stimulated person, a mat with a cool design, like this one, can make your practice more pleasurable, says Ingber. A handy bonus: with this mat you also get access to an online library of yoga content .

The Details: 8 x 24 inches | 6 millimeters | PVC, latex-free

Best Reversible

Manduka yoga mat.

There’s an alignment stripe down the center of one side, which can help better guide beginner’s with hand, foot, and overall body placement.

The mat’s surface is closed-cell, which means it won’t absorb your sweat or any bacteria, so you’ll have to be diligent about wiping it down post flow.

We love that this eco-friendly Manduka mat is not only free from harsh chemical substances but makes you feel like you are getting two mats for the price of one, thanks to the dual-hued sides. Regardless of what mood leads your color choice that day (we are super keen on the lavender/fig combo), you can always count on the mat’s firm, textured surface to add stability through traction. This well-designed mat held up in a variety of classes — flow, power, and hot yoga — but we think yogis interested in a more restorative practice might do better with a more cushioned pick. Bonus points: it’s light and easy to roll and fold, which makes it a great portable option for yoga-based travel .

Best Budget

Amazon basics yoga mat.

Amazon

  • Grip 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

At half an inch inches thick, this cushy mat is a godsend for those with sensitive joints.

The thickness makes it slightly tricky to transport.

Shelling out big bucks for a mat can be super off-putting, especially if you’re a newbie and unsure if you’re ready to commit to getting downward-dog on the regular. Luckily this mat is very kind to your wallet—without you having to sacrifice on things that really count like durability, grip, and comfort. Those who spend lots of time pressing into their hands (think Crow or Wheel), will find the thick cushioned surface is gentler on wrists. We used it often for handstands against the wall and planks and never felt like we were slipping, even when sweaty. The ample cushioning also makes this a great choice for floor-based bodyweight moves (hello crunches!), too.

Other Travel Yoga Mats We Liked

These yoga mats didn’t make our main list, but they still scored well and had a few key standout features that placed them in a league of their own.

YogaAccessories 1/4-inch Deluxe Yoga Mat : At 74 inches long, this foam-based mat is longer than traditional ones, which tend to land around 68 inches, making it more amenable to those over six feet tall. It’s also extra thick, making kneeling poses like camel, low lunge, and cat/cow more manageable, especially for those with extra sensitivity in this area. That said, this 3.6-pound pick can be a little unruly when it comes to transporting it, making it less portable for travelers.

Lululemon The Mat 3mm : This barely-there option — it’s only 0.12 inches thick — is dual-sided, boasting one that’s sticky and nubby to keep you stable and grounded, while the other is smooth and cushioned for workouts that won’t leave you drenched (think a couple of quick stretches versus a full-on power flow). While we love that it comes in six gorgeous shades and has an antimicrobial layer that keeps mold and mildew at bay, we weren’t fans of how moisture marks remained long after we finished our last flow.

Blogilates Beginner Lightweight Yoga Mat: This mat — which is lightweight, easy to roll, and comes with its own carrying case — is the perfect companion for on-the-go flows. At 4mm thick, this thinner silhouette is great for those who who may need extra stability during a super active and balance-heavy practice (think: Power Vinyasa). As you flow from asana to asana across this 68-inch surface, you’ll be treated to a super grippy, textured surface (both top and bottom) that eliminates slippage. One drawback: hair and dirt are commonplace when using this mat.

For this article, we looked over results from two different yoga mat tests, in which we tried a total of 40 yoga mats. In the first round of testing we tried 19 mats from notable brands (think Manduka, Lululemon, and Jade) through three to five yoga classes per week over a four-week testing period. During this time, we assessed each yoga mat for its design, comfort, grip, and portability — all features that yoga instructor Mandy Ingber said can make or break a yoga practice. Testers continued putting these mats through their paces for an additional six months to collect long-term insights.

For our second test, we tried an additional 21 yoga mats during a yoga class, paying special attention to mat thickness, cushioning, support, and how easy they were to clean. After the class was over, we rolled and packed up the yoga mats, walking around the building, and going up and down stairs to take notes on how portable they were, if they stayed rolled up during transit, how lightweight or heavy they felt to carry, and how easy (or difficult) it was to reroll the mats and pack them up.

In the end, the standout mats put the kibosh on sweat (at least most of them), weren’t overly cushy but left our joints feeling happy, and offered a stellar grip when flowing through poses. Most of all, we felt they were portable enough to travel with.

Tips for Buying a Travel Yoga Mat

Don’t forget about weight.

Lugging around a super heavy mat can make any yoga feel less than Zen, especially if it saddles you with a heavy baggage fee at the airport. That’s why it’s wise to reach for more lightweight styles (think under 2.5 pounds) so you can easily transport it to your final destination.

Consider stickiness

As far as yoga mats go, stickiness is equivalent to traction.  So if you’re looking to lower your risk of slipping and sliding all over the place, the stickier, the better (PVC yoga mats have a pretty high stickiness factor). Also handy for staying power: mats with a raised texture.

Plan for extra support

According to Ingber, thinner yoga mats make great travel companions, as they fold easily and usually weigh less. She also notes that barely there mats “will often leave you feeling every bit of the floor,” which is why shoring up your practice space with a towel or shirt to counter any pain points (think wrists or knees) or cushion more weight-bearing asanas is advisable.

First determine what type of mat you have, as some are meant to be folded and others rolled. If the former, follow the creases if they are apparent, or simply fold it small enough to fit into the storage space you are aiming for. The latter? Roll it as tightly and evenly as possible. Ultimately, the key is to make it work for the type of luggage you are using, whether that be a backpack, a duffel bag, a tote bag, or something else.

When not traveling, consider rolling up your mat and placing it in a mat bag. This will help you keep the practice surface clean, crease-free, and for the most part unscathed, especially if you have a furry friend roaming around your home.

From Astura Yoga Mat Detox to TreeActiv Yoga Mat Spray to Moxe Yoga Mat Cleaner , there are no shortages of quality sprays lining shelves that can help eliminate sweat, stenches, and bacteria. You can also go the DIY route, mixing apple cider vinegar in a 1:4 ratio and adding a few drops of tea tree oil. No matter what route you choose, proper cleaning will help extend the life of your mat.

The JadeYoga Travel Mat is compact and well designed, and we love that it’s made from sustainable natural rubber. This means it’s not suitable for anyone with a latex allergy, and brace yourself for a rubbery smell when you first open it, which goes away after a few days.

We love how it folds up nicely (as well as rolls), which makes traveling a breeze. It’s pretty lightweight – just 2.8lbs – but there are lighter travel mats on the market. It’s nice and thin, but that means there’s not much padding or cushioning for joints and bones. Depending on your needs and budget, it might not be the right choice for you; luckily we've reviewed plenty more mats in our best yoga mats guide .

The JadeYoga Travel Mat has superb grip and offers a good level of support for all yoga styles . Its sticky surface makes it easy to hold poses without slipping. Throw some sweat into the mix though and it can be prone to being a bit slippy, so it might be useful to have a towel to hand during yoga flows.

Size: 24” x 2” (rolled), 68” x 24” (unrolled)

Thickness: 3mm

Weight: 2.8 lbs

Materials: Natural rubber

Colors: Black, midnight blue, olive green, purple

It comes in two lengths, 68” and 74”, which is great if you’re on the tall side, and four colors: black, midnight blue, purple and olive green.

The JadeYoga Travel Mat can be a bit of a dust and lint magnet so you need to clean it down after each session, but that kind of comes with the territory of sticky mats and is no bad thing in the Covid era. For a quick clean, use mat cleaner and wipe down with a cloth and warm water.

The JadeYoga Travel Mat is made from biodegradable material so avoid harsh soaps and definitely don’t leave it to dry in the sun unless you want to throw it in the trash straight after!

It is durable enough for daily use and thin enough to pack and transport easily, meaning you can carry on doing your yoga practice wherever you are in the world.

The JadeYoga Travel Mat comes in four autumnal colors (black, midnight blue, purple and olive green) and is made from sustainably sourced natural rubber so it’s eco-friendly, and biodegradable – ticking a lot of planet-friendly boxes.

It has a pleasing, simple design and is lightweight enough to easily transport in your suitcase or bag. For that reason it’s super practical, as you can carry it on public transport or under your arm when you’re heading to yoga class - or even for some al fresco yoga in the park, weather permitting.

The JadeYoga Travel Mat contains no PVC, EVA or other synthetic rubber and is made ethically in compliance with all US environmental, labor and consumer protection laws. This is a brand that cares about its carbon footprint, too. For every mat sold, Jade plants a tree (more than 2 million trees have been planted to date).

Image shows a rolled up JadeYoga Travel Mat.

JadeYoga Travel Mat: Performance

The JadeYoga Travel Mat is easy to unroll and stays fairly flat, although the corners do tend to stick up a bit. For a thin mat it’s supportive enough without being bulky, and it has great traction when moving in between poses. It’s not very padded though, so anyone with weak knees or joint problems might want to consider a thicker mat.

The open cell construction makes it really grippy, which is ideal for daily yoga. But it’s not such a high performer when it gets wet. We found that a sweaty HIIT class made it too slippery, and we weren’t confident doing dynamic moves like jumping squats or burpees on it in case we suffered an injury. For that reason, the JadeYoga Travel Mat is better suited to slower exercises like yoga, Pilates, stretching and meditation.

The only downside of the grippiness is it collects dirt and dust easily, but it’s nothing a wash down can’t resolve.

Image shows a folded up JadeYoga travel mat.

JadeYoga Travel Mat: Care

Basically, ANY exposure to sun will damage the natural rubber (drying it out, discoloring it, and leading to faster breakdown of the rubber), which includes practicing outside, leaving it in the backseat of your car, or even near a window in your house. Also, the downfall of the stickiness is that not only do your hands and feet stick to it, but so does everything else - dirt, hair, lint. Since it's not a "closed cell" mat, which is what helps it be super sticky, it is also very absorbent of sweat. Amazon customer

On the whole, the JadeYoga Travel Mat gets rave reviews: 4/6 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with 76% giving it the full five stars.

Reviewers loved the great grip and that it was easy to roll up and take on vacation. They also appreciated that it was made from renewable resources.  One Amazon reviewer praised the JadeYoga Travel Mat for being “undeniably sticky” but said it was equally “high maintenance” and needed a lot of cleaning.

Should you buy the JadeYoga Travel Mat?

Image shows a a partly rolled JadeYoga travel mat.

The JadeYoga Travel Mat is an affordable, eco-friendly choice for traveling yogis who don’t want to compromise on grip or support.

It has great traction and works well for daily yoga practice, but the rubber material means it collects dirt easily and can get slippery when wet, so not the best choice for high impact exercise like HIIT or circuits.

It’s durable, easy to fold away and pack and has a nice design, although limited color choices (just four). We love the eco-friendly ethos of the brand and knowing that our mat is made from renewable resources that won’t cost the earth.

Image shows a rolled JadeYoga Travel Mat.

If this product isn’t for you

If the JadeYoga Travel Mat is not for you, here are three alternatives to consider:

The Manduka eKO Lite Travel Mat is one of the most popular on the market and for good reason. Similar to the JadeYoga Travel Mat, it’s made sustainably and has good cushioning (3mm) for daily practice. It’s fairly heavy to lug around at 4lbs but it’s a durable choice from a reputable brand. It also comes in a ton of fun colors.

The JadeYoga Voyager is super light and thin (1.5mm), and folds up to the size of a yoga block making it an ideal choice for yogis on the go or those with limited space. As with all Jade products, it’s eco-friendly but the brand recommends that this mat isn’t durable enough for daily use, so save it for vacations.

YOGO Ultralight Travel Mat weighs just 2.1lbs and is only 1.5mm thick so it’s super compact and easy to pack. As a result it’s not very padded so not good for people who need more support, but it has enough grippiness to enjoy some yoga flows on trips away.

Are you wondering if the Jade Yoga Travel Mat is worth the money? The best yoga mats can turn a good stretch into the perfect flow and you deserve to enjoy your favorite workout even when you’re away on vacation. That’s where a travel mat comes in.

Yoga is well-known for being good for the mind, body, and soul. Benefits include increased flexibility and better muscle tone and strength, as well as improved respiratory and cardiovascular (heart) health, according to the American Osteopathic Association .

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat is lightweight at 1.3kg, you can roll or fold it, and it’s thin enough to carry under your arm when walking to the studio or park.

What we love most about the Jade Yoga Travel Mat is that it’s made from sustainable resources and the natural rubber gives it an awesome grip. Because it’s so thin, you won’t get much cushioning, so beginners might prefer a thicker mat. It can also be a bit slippy when it gets wet, but nothing having a towel on standby can’t solve.

Jade Yoga Travel Mat review: price & features

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat is available now from $58/ £62.72.

It’s a lightweight (weighing 2.9 lbs) and compact mat, but the fact it’s thin also means it’s lacking in any substantial padding or cushioning. If you're looking for something with added grip, head to our Sweaty Betty Super Grip Yoga Mat review .

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat is made from eco-friendly natural rubber (not suitable for anyone with latex allergies) so has a strong rubbery odor on opening, but this doesn’t last more than a few days.

The mat unrolls really well and generally stays flat. It also folds up neatly into a rectangle roughly the size of a yoga block, making it the ideal travel companion as you can fit it into your suitcase or even your hand luggage. The Jade Yoga Travel Mat offers a good level of grip and support for all types of yoga practice. The sticky surface means it’s easier to get into poses without slipping, although once you get sweaty palms you may find things move around a bit more! We recommend having a towel on hand for more complex yoga flows or HIIT workouts.

Jade Yoga Travel Mat review: image shows Jade Yoga Travel Mat

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat comes in two lengths, 68-inches and 74-inches – great for taller people. You can choose from four colors: black, midnight blue, purple, and olive green. The Jade Yoga Travel Mat tends to attract dirt and dust because of its rubbery surface, so we advise a quick wipe down post-session. It’s made from biodegradable material so don’t use harsh soaps and definitely don't leave it to dry in the sun, as this will cause the rubber to deteriorate.

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat works well for daily use, and is light enough to transport easily without needing a separate carry bag.

Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat review: look and feel

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat is available in four colors (black, midnight blue, purple and olive green) and is made from sustainably sourced natural rubber.

It has a simple design and is portable either in a handbag or suitcase thanks to its foldability. You can also roll it up like a standard mat and easily carry it to the studio or park for a class.

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat doesn’t contain any PVC, EVA, or other synthetic rubber and is made ethically in compliance with all US environmental, labor, and consumer protection laws. This brand really cares about its carbon footprint - for every mat sold, Jade Yoga plants a tree (so far, two million trees have been planted!). Another great eco-friendly mat that we’ve reviewed is the Yogamatters Eco Rise Yoga Mat .

Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat review: performance

Unroll the Jade Yoga Travel Mat and it will stay in place well, with the odd corner sticking up after a while. For a 3mm mat, it’s supportive enough and provides good grip, even when doing fast and furious HIIT moves like burpees or mountain climbers.

It has great traction when moving in between yoga poses too but because of the lack of padding, this mat isn’t ideal for extended back work or headstands. Anyone with knee or joint issues might prefer to look for a thicker mat like the Lululemon The Reversible 5mm Mat.

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat has an open cell construction, meaning it will absorb water and sweat more easily. That also makes it really grippy, so you can use it every day, but it’s not so effective when it gets wet. Counter this by having a towel on standby for more vigorous moves.

Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat review: care

Made from natural rubber, the Jade Yoga Travel Mat has a strong odor when unpacked, but that doesn’t last for more than a few days. We recommend airing it out in a spare room, but don’t be tempted to sun-dry it – rubber is biodegradable, so this will ruin it.

Rubber is also known for being durable, which is why it’s a great material for a yoga mat. The stickiness of the top layer makes getting into tricky positions easier, but it also makes the mat a bit more high maintenance.

The mat’s open cell construction and porous nature mean that dirt and sweat can easily get inside and breed bacteria – not something anyone wants, especially in the COVID era. However, a regular clean with warm water and gentle soap as well as a monthly deep clean will help to make your mat last longer. For more on that, you can read our article about cleaning your workout gear at home .

Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat review: user reviews

The Jade Yoga Travel Mat scores 4.6 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with 76% of reviewers giving it a full five stars. Reviewers praise the grip and how easy the mat is to roll up and pack into a suitcase. They also loved its eco-friendly features.

However, one Amazon reviewer said it was a high maintenance mat that required a lot of cleaning: "Basically, ANY exposure to the sun will damage the natural rubber (drying it out, discoloring it, and leading to faster breakdown of the rubber), which includes practicing outside, leaving it in the backseat of your car, or even near a window in your house."

Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat review: Also consider

The YOGO Ultralight Travel Yoga Mat ($68 / £49) is super light (2.1 lbs) and thin (1.5mm), so it’s very compact and portable. The downside is it’s not very padded so not ideal for people who need cushioning, but it has enough grip to enjoy yoga practice on vacation.

A bestseller for good reason, the Manduka eKO Lite Travel Mat ($54 / £40) is similar to the Jade Yoga Travel Mat in that it’s sustainable and has good cushioning (3mm) for daily practice. It’s quite heavy for a travel mat (4 lbs), but it’s durable and from a much-loved brand. It also comes in a ton of bright colors.

1.5mm thin and lightweight, the Jade Yoga Voyager ($54 / £40) folds up to the size of a yoga block, making it a good choice for traveling yogis or those with limited space. While it is eco-friendly (like all other products by Jade Yoga), the brand says this mat isn’t resilient enough for daily practice, so reserve it for weekend breaks and vacations.

Jade Travel Yoga Mat Vs. Manduka Pro Lite: Best Portable Yoga Mats

PRODUCT COMPARISON

Jade Travel Yoga Mat

  • Length: 68/74”
  • Thickness: 3.2 mm
  • Weight: 2.9/3.3 lbs
  • Material: Natural rubber from trees

Manduka ProLite

  • Length: 71/79”
  • Thickness: 4.7 mm
  • Weight: 4/4.5 lbs
  • Material: Latex-free PVC

If you’re a yoga practitioner who travels often, your life would be a whole lot easier with a decent travel mat. They’re not as tough and sturdy as classic mats you use at home, but it is a lot easier to walk around with a 3lb mat than one that weighs as much as a newborn baby.

And when you think about air travel and overweight baggage fees, a lightweight yoga mat suddenly becomes a sound investment. Especially since travel mats are thinner than standard ones, and can easily be folded to fit into your carry-on. But which travel mat do you get, and is it really a good substitute for your favorite heavy-duty one?

In this detailed comparison, we will take a look at two portable travel mats. One is from Jade Yoga and the other is from Manduka. Both brands have amazing products that rarely disappoint, so we are pretty confident that one of these portable yoga mats is just right for you!

Materials And Texture

The first things we’re going to look at are the materials these mats are made from and their surface texture. The Jade Yoga mat is made from natural rubber from rubber trees. It has an open-cell texture that offers great grip, but it does mean that the mat is slightly less stable. It has some give and you can feel it when you’re doing different poses. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is entirely a matter of personal preference.

The best thing about the material of the Jade Yoga mat is that it uses zero synthetic materials. Everything about it is completely natural, and the company even plants a tree for every mat they sell. If you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly option, then definitely go with the Jade Yoga Travel Mat.

The Manduka Pro Lite features an entirely different composition. For one, it has a closed-cell texture that isn’t nearly as flexible as the one of the Jade mat. But I think that’s a good thing, as it makes the mat perfectly stable. It won’t budge an inch no matter how much you are moving on it – if that’s the performance you prefer, then the Manduka ProLite is the obvious option for you.

The benefit of the closed-cell texture is that it doesn’t absorb nearly as much moisture as the Jade mat, so you won’t have to clean it as often because it will stay fresh for longer.

Additionally, the Manduka ProLite mat is made from PVC and is 100% free from latex . It is eco-friendly but it’s not made from entirely natural materials like the Jade Yoga mats. But that’s precisely the reason why this mat feels sturdier and more stable. Ultimately, it’s down to your personal preference – do you want a springy mat that’s entirely eco-friendly or a stable yoga mat that’s made from PVC?

Padding And Thickness

The thickness of a yoga mat is very important for your comfort. Some people prefer thicker mats that are more comfortable when you’re exercising outside, as they provide a thicker layer of cushioning between you and debris on the ground. Other people prefer thinner mats because they want closer contact with the ground – which one are you?

The Jade Travel Yoga mat is 3.2 mm thick. That’s not a lot and it’s a great option if you normally prefer thinner mats that allow for close contact with the ground. On the other hand, the open-cell texture of the Jade mat feels very soft on your knees, which is great for seated poses and lunges. Even though it’s pretty thin, it is not uncomfortable and it feels really soft.

The Manduka ProLite has a thickness of 4.7 mm, so it’s the better option if you don’t want to feel the ground under the mat. However, keep in mind that the ProLite itself is not as soft as the Jade mat due to the closed-cell surface. Even though it’s thicker, it’s much less elastic and ultimately not as soft as the Jade Travel Yoga mat.

The two portable yoga mats are very similar in terms of cushioning, and it really comes down to the feel that you prefer. If it’s a thinner but softer mat, then go with the Jade Yoga option. But if you want a thicker and sturdier mat, then obviously get the Manduka ProLite.

Size And Dimensions

Another important thing we need to consider is the actual size of these mats. It’s worth noting that you can choose between two different lengths with both of the mats, so you some options at the very least.

The Jade Yoga mat is available in lengths of 68” and 74” , both of which are 24” wide. That should be enough for most people, provided you’re of average build. Taller people will likely need more space, especially when focusing on poses that have a lot of sideways movement.

In that sense, the Manduka ProLite might just be the better option. It is also 24” wide, but it’s longer than the Jade – you can choose between 71” and 74” lengths. The longer mat is heavier than the 71” option, so keep that in mind and consider how it will affect your commute and travels.

Another thing worth noting here is that the Jade Yoga mat isn’t necessarily the worse option just because it’s shorter. It is much more elastic than the Manduka mat, and you can actually feel it stretch along with your body when you’re doing that downward dog. Even though it’s not quite as long, it is more flexible so it performs almost just well.

Plus if you’re a short person, then it makes sense to get the shorter mat – why would you carry around something that’s bigger than you, when you can get a mat that’s perfect for your size?

But if you straight up just want the extra space for workouts, then the Manduka ProLite definitely has better options for you. The 79” mat is long enough to fit the average basketball player, which ultimately makes it the more convenient option for tall men and women.

What About Traction?

A great yoga mat will stick to the ground and it won’t move regardless of the moves you’re performing on it. But even more than that – a good yoga mate is able to handle your sweat and still stay sticky. The lower quality mats tend to turn into slip and slides when they’re wet, and that’s not something anyone wants.

The construction of these mats comes into play here – Jade Yoga mats tend to be spongier than the Manduka ones, which means that they absorb more sweat and are ultimately drier during workouts. However, this also means that the mat is absorbing all the nasty bacteria and that you will have to end up replacing it sooner.

At the same time, the Jade Yoga mats offer better traction on the surface, precisely because they absorb all of your sweat. You might have to clean them more often, but it’s pretty much guaranteed that you won’t slip around while you’re doing yoga on one of their mats.

Manduka mats, on the other hand, have a closed-cell surface that stops them from absorbing sweat as rapidly. They are cleaner even after really sweaty workouts, and they will last longer because of that. But that also means some of that sweat will stay on the top layer of the mat, so ultimately their traction is a bit worse.

Additionally, the Manduka ProLite mat features a dot pattern on the bottom layer, which helps it stick to the ground. But it’s still not as sticky as the Jade Travel Yoga mat.

Now, if you are into hot yoga, neither of these mats is the best option for you. You want something that can handle a lot more sweat and which is easier to clean, so be sure to look at some other options first.

Maintenance And Cleaning

Another important feature that people often forget to talk about is how easy it is to clean a yoga mat. Ideally you’d be able to throw them in the washer and dryer, but we live in a world that is far from ideal.

Jade mats absorb everything, so it’s best not to use too much cleaner with them. In fact, you should clean it with water after every workout, and every so often give it a deep clean in the bathtub. But even then, be very carful that you use a mild cleaner, preferably something anti-bacterial and give it a really thorough rinse. And don’t leave them out in the sunlight for too long when they’re drying – it’s best to hang them to dry in your bathroom.

It’s different with Manduka mats. Because of the closed cell texture they have on the top layer, they aren’t nearly as absorbent. Which means that you’re free to clean them with whatever you want – I prefer regular household cleansers or even just a DIY water and vinegar cleanser to Manduka’s pricey brand option.

Weight And Portability

A good yoga mat should be lightweight, especially if you usually do yoga at the studio as opposed to your home. And in that aspect, the Jade mat is without a doubt the more convenient option. It weighs about 2.9 lbs , which is a pretty good weight – it is heavy enough to be a serious and sturdy mat, but not so heavy that you’re getting in a workout every time you lift it off the ground.

On the other hand, the Manduka ProLite weighs in at about 4 lbs , depending on the exact length you get. It’s not a massive difference, but it is one you are going to feel if we’re talking about a 20-minute walk to the studio. Obviously, the Jade Yoga mat is the better option for air travel, when every ounce matters due to airline weight restrictions.

Another thing to consider is how often you commute with the mat, and what mode of transport you’re using. If you just drive down to the studio and throw the mat in the car, the 1lb difference isn’t even that important. But if you have to ride the bike or use public transport while carrying the mat on your shoulders, then a lighter option will ultimately be more convenient.

If you’re mostly going to be doing yoga at home and want a mat that’s good for the occasional trip, then either one of these is a valid option. In fact, you might even want to consider some of the other options from these brands – they have a bunch of other mats that are much better for use at home due to their thickness and performance. The main reason why I didn’t feature them here is that they tend to be really heavy so they’re not very portable.

Drying And Sun Exposure

The Jade Yoga mat is made from natural biodegradable rubber . Because of that, you shouldn’t leave it out in the direct sunlight for too long – it can discolor the mat and significantly increase the rate at which it degrades. Leave it to dry out in the sunlight and you might have a permanently damaged yoga mat that is virtually useless.

It’s best to dry it indoors – although it might take longer than just throwing it out in the yard, it’s the only way to avoid permanently damaging your new fancy travel mat.

Manduka mats , on the other hand, love sunlight. They’re made from PVC that can easily handle the sun, and they are a lot more convenient in this aspect. In fact, it’s even recommended that you leave out the ProLite in the sun after you’ve sprayed it with sea salt, just to make the break-in process even shorter.

Breaking In The Mat

Getting a brand new yoga mat is exciting, but waiting for it to break in properly can be tiring. So, it’s important to consider the break-in period of a new yoga mat, just to know what to expect. This will also help you prepare for a trip – you can break in the mat before you travel somewhere with it,  so you won’t have to deal with that while you are away.

The Jade Yoga mat is very soft and flexible out of the box and it takes virtually no time to break it in. That is because of the spongy, open-cell texture that is ready for use as soon as it arrives on your doorstep. The one thing that might bother you is the scent when it’s brand new, but that will go away in a day or two.

The Manduka ProLite , on the other hand, is much more rigid. The texture does improve over time, but it will take some time to break in the mat. It will help if you spray the mat with sea salt and leave it like that for about 24 hours. Additionally, I would recommend doing some practice sessions on the mat to break it in, and alternating which way you are facing so that you can even break in the entire mat.

Jade Travel Yoga Mat Vs. Manduka ProLite: Is One Better?

Ultimately, it comes down to your personal preference. Both of these travel mats are great options, and they both excel in different areas. The Jade Travel Yoga mat is amazing when it comes to traction. It is very sticky, and its open cell texture means that it will never turn into a slip and slide, even if you are doing hot yoga.

The Jade Yoga mat is made from biodegradable rubber that requires no time to break in but is sensitive to sunlight. It’s the more eco-friendly option out of the two, but it’s also not quite as durable as the Manduka ProLite.

The Manduka mat is pretty much stable like a tank. The dot texture at the bottom ensures that it sticks to the ground and doesn’t move an inch no matter what pose you’re doing on the mat. The closed-cell texture ensures that you have better traction when the mat is dry, but it also means that the ProLite doesn’t absorb any sweat at all.

If we’re talking just about portability, the Jade Travel Yoga mat is by far the better option. It’s more than a pound lighter, so it’s much easier to carry it places. This is very important for air travel, or just for people who are used to walking to the studio.

On the other hand, the heavier weight of the Manduka comes from its thicker construction and it makes the mat more stable overall. Extra thickness also means better cushioning and more comfort, so bear that in mind when making the final decision.

In the end, it really is up to you. Do you want a thin and light yoga mat that’s sticky and takes ages to dry, or a very stable and rigid one, which you can just leave out in the yard and forget about it?

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
