Nutmos/Shutterstock.com

You’ll find JR Osaka Station in Umeda , the center of Osaka. It makes for a great sightseeing base given its easy access to Kyoto and Kobe , and it has plenty of shopping and dining to enjoy. It has plenty of hotels as well, so don’t hesitate to plan your sightseeing trip around JR Osaka Station !

Osaka Station’s handy Osaka Travel Service Center!

The Osaka Travel Service Center by the central ticket gate in JR Osaka Station provides information on Osaka sightseeing and railroad routes. It combined the formerly separate sightseeing and railroad information stands and moved them to the more conspicuous central ticket gate. Its multilingual support makes it a valuable ally to tourists! Let’s take a look at the services they have to offer.

Service 1: Osaka Sightseeing Guidance

Find yourself in Osaka without having done any research ahead of time? No problem, the Travel Service Center’s got you covered. They’ll tell you of and how to get to Osaka’s best sights, such as the sparkling neon streets of Dotonbori , one of the world’s largest aquariums Kaiyukan, and the popular theme park Universal Studios Japan. And if there’s a smaller shop you found on Instagram or such that you can’t find in travel guides, they can help you figure out how to get there.

jr travel service center osaka

There are plenty of pamphlets on sights and foods, and these are worth the trip to the center alone. The food pamphlets are particularly well made, with detailed information on how to get the best food in Osaka at the best price, covering a range of establishments from famous restaurants to local izakayas.

jr travel service center osaka

If you’d like to look things up yourself, there are computers free of charge to use set up in the center. When you find a place you’d like to go to in your net searching, tell the staff and they’ll help you get there.

Main Service 2: Railroad Assistance

JR Osaka Station has lines that go through the prefecture of Osaka, as well as to Kyoto, Kobe , and Nara . If you’re not sure which train to ride to get to where you need to, try asking the Travel Center! They’ll tell you everything you need to know, from which platform of which line to what time it departs. This counter will also help you if you run into problems on the train, such as lost possessions. They’ll check the train to see if your lost goods are still there and do their best to solve your problem.

Service 3: Rail Pass Sales

The adjacent travel agency, the TiS Osaka Branch (Nippon Travel Agency) sells and exchanges Japan Rail Passes. Japan Rail passes are specific tickets for foreign tourists that are a very economic choice for traveling Japan via train. A normal bullet train round trip ticket from Tokyo to Osaka will cost 28,280 yen, while this pass gives unlimited bullet train trips from Tokyo to Osaka, Osaka to Fukuoka , Fukuoka to Beppu and more for 7 days for only 29,110 yen! (Purchased ahead of time. Buying them in Japan will cost 33,000 yen) You can also get passes for 14 or 21 days, select ecologically-friendly trains, or adult/child tickets, all with differing prices.

Most establishments in Japan still use cash, making it essential to carry when out sightseeing. To aid in this, the Travel Center has a currency exchange corner that deals in 31 currencies, able to convert from and into Japanese yen. It also sells prepaid cards for overseas use and handles international money wiring, as well. The center also has a baggage deposit service, “ecbo cloak”, usable by making paid reservations on the paired app. Set down your big suitcases and backpacks at the center to enjoy your Osaka trip unfettered! Lucua, a building attached to the station, also has a temporary baggage deposit service for a fee. TiS also has a branch in Kyoto Station with similar services for visitors!

If you’re visiting Osaka from abroad, check this out!

Visit Travel Service Center Osaka if you want to know about sightseeing or have any trouble. There are always English-speaking staff at the counter, and if there aren’t any Chinese or Korean speakers available, you can get them on the service center’s phone to help you. If you’d like to have Osaka be the base of your Japanese trip, try talking it out at the counter here – they’ll be sure to show you how to have an even more fun trip.

Where to Buy a Japan Rail Pass (A Tourist Guide)

where to buy japan rail pass

Last Updated on July 29, 2022 by Rose Morah

You can buy a Japan rail pass online, at a JR designated sales office or overseas agent, or at a ticket office in Japan.

Before we dive deeper into the places where you can purchase a Japan rail pass, it is essential to note that:

  • The Japan Rail Pass cannot be used when traveling between the Central Japan Airport and the nearest JR Stations.
  • The Central Japan Airport does not have a JR Station.

1. Where to purchase a Japan rail pass online

Visit their official website . You will need to log in or create a new account.

Here are the main requirements when buying Japan rail pass online

  • You are only allowed to purchase the Japan rail pass online but through a Credit card. Find more detail here .

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

Yes . Not only is it the best when you want to see the country, but it is also a bucket list experience.

And well, apart from that, if you plan on touring more than one city in Japan, then the JR rail pass will help you save a lot on transport.

However, JR Rail Pass is not worthwhile if:

  • Your trip to Japan covers mostly the remote parts of the country.
  • Your Japan itinerary includes spending several days in only one area. For instance, let’s say you’re planning on going on a hike. This is because the pass will only be used for consecutive days.
  • You are visiting cities that are close to each other on your Japan itinerary (for example Osaka and Kyoto). It would be cheaper to use other means of transportation.

JR Osaka Station

Shopping and Railway Hub for the Kansai Region

Hoyee Tse

The spider web like system of subway and railway lines in Kansai converge at Osaka’s Umeda district, making it a potential headache for first time and repeat visitors alike. However JR Osaka Station makes an exception. It is easy to access the train platforms and the close-by shopping malls using its clearly posted signs and map guide in Japanese and English, making it a little easier to transfer amongst the various transit systems, whether you are heading to the JR, Hankyu, Hanshin Railway lines, the city subway or the local, intercity buses or taxis.

In Japan there has been a historical association between railway stations and department stores, as they are often owned by the same company, allowing commuters and late working office workers to pick up something before they head home. Osaka’s Umeda is similar to Kyoto, Ikebukuro or Shinjuku in this regard. JR Osaka has direct and covered access to its surrounding shopping areas, such as Eki Marche Osaka in the Umekita district, on the former site of GARE Osaka. It has everything you need, being a dining, entertainment, shopping and basic banking area. If you have a foreign sourced ATM card, make your way to Southern side of the station where the Central Post Office (open 9am to 7pm daily) or to a branch of the Citibank as most Japanese bank ATMs do not work with foreign cards.

Adjacent to Midosuji exit, Osaka Station City with more than 10-floor Lucua shopping malls gives you even more choices of local Japanese and international brands, like Beams, Journal Standard and Loft. Grand Front Osaka is only 5-minute walk away from the South exit and Daimaru Department Store is also right next to the South exit.

JR Osaka is biggest station in Kansai, and with over 2 million passengers using the Railway and Subway stations in the Umeda/ Osaka complex, it is also one of the busiest stations in the world. So if you are meeting someone here, be really clear where you want to meet, in case either of you get lost. The café at the lobby of the Hilton Hotel might be a better bet, as you can sit down and relax with a drink while you wait. Or you can try cafe X5 (Phone 06-6348-4611) in the Osaka Ekimae No 4 Forum Building, a five minute walk to the south.

JR Osaka is also only one station away from Shin-Osaka - a Shinkansen or bullet train station. It means that you can travel anywhere from Hokkaido to Kagoshima easily through Osaka.

Shin-Osaka is one of the stations valid for JR West Wide Pass , so you only have to take one station from JR Osaka station to Shin-Osaka in order to travel with the ultra-speed bullet trains. The JR West Wide Pass gives you free access to Okayama, while JR Rail Pass holders can take direct trains to Kagoshima in the South west, or Tokyo in the East.

If you are going to Kyoto , however, it is more convenient getting a direct train from Osaka rather than changing for a bullet train in Shin-Osaka. For example, if you are on Platforms 7 and 8 at 1 pm, you can catch a train to Shin Osaka, walk a long way to the bullet train gates, wait 13 minutes for the bullet train, and then arrive in Kyoto (non-stop) at 1:29. Or you can wait for the 1:02 pm Special Rapid service, arriving in Kyoto also at 1:29. The Special Rapid service departs at least once every 15 minutes, and if you don’t mind standing up with the locals, it will get you there just as quickly. You may do a double take when you get off at Kyoto station, as the steel and glass cathedral like structure is similar to that of Osaka.

Heading dead south from Osaka is the Midosuji local subway line, taking you to the Dontobori and Minami nightlife and entertainment district at Shinsaibashi . At Namba station you can connect with the Kintetsu Osaka Line, a privately owned railway line connecting Osaka and Mie Prefecture via Nara Prefecture, giving you an opportunity to explore a quieter side of Kansai.

Information about these sightseeing opportunities is available at the tourist information centre at the JR Station complex. The ticket machines and ticket information office are available from 5am to midnight for the easy purchase of tickets in Japanese or English.

Insightful stories about japanese culture and useful information for travelling in japan, where and how to validate / receive your japan rail pass.

Japan Rail Pass

You’ve got a voucher for your Japan Rail Pass. Great!

But where and how can you validate / receive the pass?

Midori-no-madoguchi

Bring your voucher to a JR (Japan Railroad Company) counter located at major JR train stations called Midori-no Madoguchi, which literally means “Green Counter”.

They will know what you want if you show the voucher, but try saying “onegai shimasu” along with showing the voucher.

It is a useful and polite expression in Japanese meaning “please do this for me” that you can use almost everywhere you go in Japan.

You can just say “onegai shimasu” or use is in place for please like “shio-ramen onegai shimasu”.

Kansai International Airport

The counter in KIX is located at the 2nd floor, which is one floor up from where you come out after the custom.

Look for a sign that says “Trains”.

You can use an elevator to go up one floor.

Then the counter is on your left while you’ll see a ticket gate to trains on your right.

JR ticket office at Kansai International Airport

Since there is only one international terminal, it is more simple at KIX.

*KIX has been hit by Typhoon Jebi in September, 2018. If you have already booked a flight to KIX, be sure to contact your airline. Some airlines allow passengers to switch their flights to other destinations such as Narita and Haneda in Tokyo, but for a limited period of time.

Narita InternationalAirport

Narita has JR EAST Travel Service Center where you can not only validate / receive your JR Pass, but ask other questions about travelling in Japan. They have English-speaking agents.

JR East Travel Service Center is located near the ticket gate for JR trains.

So, look for “Trains” sign on our arrival floor to get there.

You can find a map on JR website here .

Haneda (Tokyo International) Airport

Haneda is much more convenient when you want to get to Tokyo.

But as for JR Pass, it is a bit more complicated since JR trains don’t run to Haneda station.

You will need to take either Keikyu or Tokyo Monorail lines to get to one of JR stations, Shinagawa and Hamamatsucho respectively.

Or you can take a taxi or a shuttle bus to get to your hotel, then go to one of following JR stations from there: Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno, Hamamatsucho, Shinagawa.

JR Stations

Again, if you didn’t or couldn’t validate / receive your JR Pass at the airport, you can do so at major JR stations.

In Tokyo: Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno, Hamamatsucho, Shinagawa stations

In Osaka: Shin-Osaka, Osaka stations

Look for green Midori-no-madoguchi signs.

Tips on using Japan Rail Pass

Keep in mind that Japan Rail Pass is only valid for JR trains.

JR covers most of regions and areas in Japan.

But there are many other private lines in cities.

Still, you can get around using your JR pass most of the time. So, it’s really worth having the pass.

Using Japan Rail Pass for bullet trains (Shinkansen)

With your pass, you are eligible to get on any Shinkansen except types called Nozomi and Mizuho.

You can always hop on to get a non-reserved seat.

But it’s a lot better if you get a free ticket for a reserved seat at Midori-no-Madoguchi, since most of Shinkansen seats are reserved. (e.g. Out of 16 cars connected on a Tokaido Shinkansen, only 3 cars have non-reserved seats.)

When you get to the station, head to the counter and show your Japan Rail Pass.

Then, ask for a reserved seat.

It is free to reserve a seat for a Japan Rail Pass holder.

Say “Shiteiseki onegai shimasu” or just “Shiteiseki, please”.

Shiteiseki means a reserved seat.
