An all-inclusive tour of New York’s best breweries

Advisor

My wife and I were visiting from out of town and looking for something fun to do and we lucked out as we came across City Brew Tours who just happened to start running tours in NY that weekend.

We went on an awesome brew tour and visited 3 great breweries including Five Boroughs, Circa, and Interboro all located in Brooklyn. It was cool way to experience the flavor of the area. Each spot was unique but we tasted awesome beers at each location.

The tour also included some great Pizza at Circa. We were led by a beer guide who was very funny and kept us entertained throughout, but was also an expert who educated us about the brewing process which was really interesting.

Overall, the all inclusive experience was a tremendous value and well worth the cost. I can't wait to do it again when we get back in NY or one of the other cities in which they operate!

This tour was awesome! A great value for the amount of beer and it included a great selection of different breweries. I particularly loved 5 boroughs and Circa. The pizza was amazing at Circa! This was a really great way to see the different neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Our guide was super funny, like a comedian! I need tour guides to be entertaining and he certainly was. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Do it!

What a fun night we had!!! The 4 of us in the past 2 1/2 weeks traveled from ports in Spain, Portugal and Canada prior to spending time in NYC. Our husbands were very disappointed in their quest to find “good beer.” Well, we finally found it! Isaac and Tim chose 3 excellent breweries in Brooklyn for us to tour and taste the beer. The whole evening was great and the beer we tasted was excellent. We would love to take this tour again on our next visit to NYC.

This tour was amazing. Our tour guide, Isaac, was extremely knowledgeable and in the breweries we went to and in the process of brewing beer. The tour was extremely easy and convenient. We were picked up and dropped off at the same location. We went to three breweries (5 Borough, Circa, Interboro) and didn't feel rushed at any off them. Issac allowed for us to take our time to really enjoy the space, the people, and especially the beers at each of these amazing Brooklyn breweries.

City Brew Tours, the popular brand of guided craft brewery tours, has expanded its franchise to Birmingham.

The company , founded in Burlington, Vt. by Chad Brodsky, offers tours of craft breweries led by designated drivers. Brodsky launched City Brew Tours in 2008 and became “the first to establish a brewery tour company on the East Coast,” according to the company’s website. The tour offers guests the chance to visit a number of craft breweries in a city, learn about the history of the breweries, the brewing process, and sample a selection of beers at each location.

Since its launch, City Brew Tours has expanded to more than 14 cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, and Montreal.

Birmingham’s franchise of City Brew Tours opened to the public on Nov. 4. Led by Scottie and Dustin Hughes, the tours will include stops at Avondale Brewing Company, Cahaba Brewing Company, Ghost Train Brewing Company, Good People Brewing Company, Neighbors Brew & Pies, and TrimTab Brewing Company. The $99 “Original” brew tour features a sampling of 16 beers and a lunch and beer pairing. The slightly smaller $75 “sip” tour will include 12 samples and a pretzel snack. Tickets are available at citybrewtours.com/birmingham. City Brews Tours Birmingham is offering a 20 % promotional discount on tours until November 15. Patrons who wish to receive the discount can book their tours using the code “LAUNCH20.”

“We have partnered with some of the best breweries in Birmingham to give an experience unmatched in the area,” Scottie Hughes, co-leader behind City Brew Tours Birmingham, said in a press release. “We will be going through the history and brewing process of craft beer while tasting a variety at each stop. Birmingham has such great quality craft beer that we cannot wait to show off to our guests.”

A group of tour guests surround a tour guide at a local brew pub

St. Augustine Brewery Tours

These walking tours combine St. Augustine's history with tastes of local brews and spirts.

The walking tour starts at Dog Rose Brewery

Fridays - Sundays at 1:00 & 5:00 p.m.

A group of tour guests surround a tour guide at a local brew pub

St. Augustine Brewery Tours invites visitors and locals to celebrate the centuries of brewing and distilling in America’s oldest city with tours that focus on local brews and spirits. Along the way, the experienced guides explain St. Augustine's rich history and the history of brews, spirits, and wine.

Walking Tour

Led by an experienced local tour guide who knows how beer and spirits are made, the tour includes four stops: Dog Rose Brewing Company, Ancient City Brewing, City Gate Spirits, and Auggie's Draft Room. The tour is limited to 10 people, making it easy for the group to interact and have fun together.

The first two stops introduce the tour to beer made here in St. Augustine. Dog Rose Brewing Company has created handcrafted ales and lagers since 2017. Their facility has a roomy and comfortable taproom, and the brewery is behind the bar. Ancient City Brewing has a brewhouse and taproom off State Road 16 and a second taproom in the Historic Downtown, just across from the Plaza de la Constitución. There, they serve the Ancient City year-round as well as seasonal beers.

From the taproom on Cathedral Place, the group walks a few blocks in the Historic District, past shops, restaurants, and historic buildings to City Gate Spirits. This local distillery offers samples of their flavored spirits made with rum, vodka, whiskey, and moonshine. After that, a short walk across the courtyard ends at Auggie's Draft Room. This self-serve tap house has a rotating selection of craft beers, ciders, and wines and an enticing menu of handhelds, sides, and salads. You can sample beers made in Florida and beyond and learn more about beer and spirits and how they intertwine with St. Augustine’s history.

Auggie's is the last stop, so you can stick around for a bar meal and additional drinks or walk around the Historic District enjoying other foods and beverages.

Details and Planning

Beginning March 8, 2024, the St. Augustine Brewery Walking Tours are available at 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Go here for more information and to make reservations.

While some city and on-street parking may be available near Dog Rose, St Augustine Brewery Tours suggests that those not walking to the tour use a car service or taxi to Dog Rose and from Auggie's or wherever you go after Auggie's.

Food is not included in the price of the tour. At each stop, everyone will be invited to try two to three sample drinks of the brews and spirits. There will be time to sit and sip, chat, and learn. If snacks appeal, guests may order off the menu when food is available.

Hofbräuhaus Columbus Tour

800 Goodale Boulevard • 614.294.2437 http://www.hofbrauhauscolumbus.com/

Grandview’s Hofbräuhaus is one of only five modeled after the legendary 400-year-old Brauhaus in Munich, Germany. Everything – from the biers and authentic German fare to the traditional lederhosen and dierndls worn by the servers – meets the stringent specifications of the Stäatliches Hofbräuhaus in München.

Even Biermeister Robert Makein was brought in from Dusseldorf, Germany, where breweries and beer gardens are institutions comparable to churches and city halls. Makein oversees the brewing following the original recipes developed by the Duke of Bavaria in the 1500s. He conducts tours for groups of 10 or more if you call ahead. He’ll take you through the entire process, beginning with a whiff of hops. Follow along and learn what happens in each of the tanks, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Makein’s vast knowledge is impressive and his German accent adds to the appeal of his smiling, self-effacing manner.

Before Luke Combs plays in front of the 'best fans' for his Milwaukee concerts this week, he tours Miller Brewery and even shotguns a beer

led brewery tours

Before Luke Combs kicks off his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour in Milwaukee this week, he went on another kind of tour. One that is quintessentially Brew City.

Combs, one of country music's biggest stars, is playing two shows at American Family Field : One Friday and another Saturday. But ahead of that, he took a tour of the Miller Brewery . And, we got to tag along.

Yes, he was every bit as kindhearted, down-to-earth and genuine as he seems. And yes, he shotgunned a beer just like he does on stage. Except this time, he was hanging out on a brewhouse rooftop with the iconic giant red Miller sign and the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark as his backdrop.

Not only did Combs — a longtime Miller Lite fan and years-long partner — see where the magic happens, he also checked out the specialty packaging on cases and cans that's coming out in honor of his blockbuster tour.

"It's just surreal, you know?" Combs told the Journal Sentinel. "I feel like I get to live so many amazing, surreal moments. And, I'm really thankful for that for sure. It's crazy. It's crazy."

Here's what we learned about Combs' tour and what he got into on the Miller tour. And, how about his eight Academy of Country Music Awards nominations that were announced earlier this week? We asked him about those, too.

Luke Combs talks about his 'Growin' Up and Gettin' Old' tour and why he's kicking it off in the Midwest

A or A+ shows don't cut it for Combs. He's shooting for A++.

"I try to do everything I can do to take care of my voice, take care of myself, make sure that we're doing everything we can," Combs said. "People that come are the only reason we get to do what we do. Putting on an A++ show is really important to me."

About to embark on his 25-date stadium tour, he's excited — and "a little nervous."

"You feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain and you're looking at the top a little bit," he said.

But after last year's "Luke Combs World Tour," he said he feels more prepared for what's ahead of him.

"We've played everywhere all over the world," Combs said. "But, the Midwest, it feels like home to me. So, good place to start it."

HOW TO AVOID TRAFFIC: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend

Combs, who grew up in North Carolina, hadn't been anywhere close to Milwaukee when he started his music career — his first plane ride came at age 25. But, he remembers his earlier stops up here fondly.

He opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made an appearance at Farm Aid at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

"The Midwest is like the best fans in the world," Combs said. "I mean, honestly. People probably say that all the time."

But, that doesn't mean pulling out of the driveway Tuesday night wasn't hard after the "amazing" time he spent with his "awesome" wife Nicole and their two sons — Tex and Beau — these past few months. Fortunately, he won't have to miss his other half too long. She'll be headed up this way this weekend.

What will always make it onto Combs' setlist this time around? "The songs that people would expect," Combs shared.

"Playing all the hits," he said. "That's why people are there, and I want to give them what they want."

But, each night of the tour will have a different vibe.

Combs' opening acts Friday — in the order they'll hit the stage — are the Wilder Blue, Charles Wesley Godwin and Cody Jinks.

"Friday's more in the Americana, singer-songwriter world," Combs said. "So, our set reflects that a little bit. But, obviously, still playing all the hits."

Saturday's openers will be Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

"Saturday night is more mainstream, Top 40 country stuff, which is what I do, really," Combs said.

Combs loves watching Jinks and Davis perform — they keep him honest, he said — and he knows they're going to kick some you know what.

The first opener will start at 5:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tailgating will be permitted. Give yourself plenty of time to drive in and get through security.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. Saturday with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at Am Fam Field's Third Base Plaza, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase.

Luke Combs' love for Miller Lite and his visit to Miller Brewery

After getting into Milwaukee Wednesday morning, Combs hung out at the Brewers stadium for a couple of hours, worked out, then was off to the Miller Brewery.

How long has Combs been a fan of Miller Lite? "Forever, probably."

"My dad's been drinking it for a long time," Combs said. "It was always around the house."

If his music career never worked out, he said, he would still be sporting a Columbia fishing shirt and drinking a Miller Lite somewhere in the world.

"That's what I would be doing anyways," he said. "So, I really wanted to go after things that I was already passionate about that felt natural and authentic to me. So, I'm very thankful for (Molson Coors) being receptive to have me on board. I feel super lucky."

Sporting a Brewers Barrelman hat, Combs and his team walked into a conference room on the brewery's complex Wednesday. He was met by a small group of longtime brewery employees and other Molson Coors staffers. The beer cases and cans with his new specialty packaging were displayed on tables.

The design features a ribbon that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart" wrapped in between the tuning pegs of a guitar. Combs' name is at the top of the headstock.

LUKE COMBS IN MILWAUKEE: Country superstar introduces heartbreaking new baseball-tinged song at American Family Field

After everyone went around the room introducing themselves, they were instructed to suit up in PPE — yellow safety vests, glasses, hard hats, toe caps and headsets.

On Combs' VIP tour of the brewery, he got a first-hand — and at times, hands-on — look at the operations with facts and history lessons along the way.

The first stop was a packaging plant, where Combs met machinist Jeff Malecki who has "But they ain't seen us together" from Combs' song "Forever After All" tattooed across his arm.

The two shook hands and got a picture together. That would become a reoccurring scene throughout Combs' visit.

It seemed like every employee who crossed paths with Combs received a handshake. And, if they wanted a photo or autograph, they got those, too, without any hesitation.

In the warehouse, Combs saw cases with the specialty packaging sliding out of a machine — he pulled his phone out to document that — and stacks of those cases getting carried off on a pallet via forklift.

At one point, Combs stood in front of what looked like a mountain of the cases. "Get this one," he said to a photographer as he hugged the cases as far as his arms would stretch.

Later, he'd get to snag one of the cans right off of a quick-moving line.

He got a taste of that and a few different brewery roles, including one that involved flipping a cardboard box filled with unconstructed cases into place. A few cases snuck out the back, but not too shabby for a first-timer.

"Thanks for letting me do that," Combs said to the workers as he shook their hands. "Thanks for letting me be in the way."

Combs also tried his hand at adding hops, one of which was liquid. "Have y'all seen 'Superbad'?" Combs asked with a bucket of hops in hand.

It reminded him of the scene when McLovin was trying to buy booze at a liquor store and said to the cashier: "You know, I heard they recently decided to add more hops to it."

Toward the conclusion of the tour, Combs said he had a "truly amazing" time. But, his favorite part had to be the grand finale.

He got to go up on a brewhouse rooftop with striking views of the city, the home of the Brewers and that big red Miller sign.

Up there is where he shotgunned a beer in under 5 seconds, and had the honor of sampling an exclusive maturation stock that not many get to try.

"To be standing up here is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Combs said.

How about those eight ACM Awards nominations

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this week. Combs leads the nominations with eight , including entertainer of the year, male artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year, single of the year and music event of the year.

"It's really awesome," he said. "Always surprising, I think ... In a lot of ways, it feels like I've been doing this a lifetime. And, in a lot of ways, I feel like I've been doing it for six months. So, I feel like sometimes I'm so conflicted with knowing what to feel or think ... It's an honor. It's my wildest dreams coming true. So, I'm a very lucky guy every day."

A 2024 win via Combs nomination for entertainer of the year would clinch the coveted triple crown award, which consists of an entertainer of the year win plus wins in an act's respective new artist (male, female, duo, or group) and artist (male, female, duo or group) categories, a USA TODAY report said.

The event will air on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on May 16.

Piet Levy of the Journal Sentinel staff and USA TODAY contributed to this report.

Take a peek at phase one of Bruce Beach Park before it opens on Saturday

led brewery tours

After six years of planning, designing and construction, the new Bruce Beach Park will open to the public as Pensacola's newest public waterfront space.

"What's behind us is only accessible sand in essence on Pensacola Bay (in the city)," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves told a group of local media on Tuesday during a tour of the park ahead of the grand opening Saturday.

The city will open phase one of Bruce Beach Park to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday.

"This is my first time actually getting to walk through here, and it certainly is beautiful and a really cool moment because of, again, being a part of so many years of talking about this," Reeves said.

Phase one of the park was completed earlier this year for $6.6 million and includes a central plaza with a walkway, shade structures, two public lawn areas with seat walls, a children's playground, and a pedestrian bridge over Washerwoman Creek connecting the park to Community Maritime Park.

City officials said Tuesday that workers had confirmed at least two alligators call the Washerwoman Creek and marsh area of the park home. Signs are posted along the marsh areas marking it off limits to keep the public and alligators a safe distance apart.

The central plaza and walking path include signs that tell the history of the area, from its days as a shipyard in the 19th century to the location of a public pool for African Americans used during the segregation area up until the early 1970s.

The signs, Reeves said, "commemorate what was here and what that meant to the people who lived in the city of Pensacola in a very difficult time in our city."

The outline of the original Bruce Pool, as it was known, is marked with concrete at the foot of the Washerwoman Creek bridge.

The park also highlights the area's connection to Pensacola Bay, with the children's playground framed by a map on the ground that shows the outline of Pensacola Bay and surrounding waterways.

The area's connection to the water and the legacy of pollution of that water are still an active concern. As the park began construction in 2022, water testing revealed sewer leaks in the surrounding areas that the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority has tried to address.

Reeves said testing through the Department of Health has continued and follow-up tests have shown that sources of bacteria at the site are now from avian sources and not human sources.

"This stretch of beach behind us has been found comparable to other stretches of public access areas along the bay going back to 2021, and approximately 75% of that testing is within safe guidelines," Reeves said.

Reeves said the park will not be meant for swimming, but the park will be an access point for kayakers and other paddle craft. The most recent testing at 19 different locations in and around the park on April 8 didn't indicate any significant sources of bacteria, Reeves said.

"We continued to test water, and that is important to us, and so we were certainly encouraged by not only having some testing that had good indicators in it, but we were doing more expensive specific testing with the Department of Health to ensure that everything looked good," Reeves said.

Construction continues on the $4 million section of phase two, which will include a bluff overlook with panoramic views of Pensacola Bay and the city, a "rock scramble" and terraced sitting areas around the bluff, a permanent kayak launch, a sand volleyball court and picnic areas.

Phase two is expected to be complete this year.

Reeves said city residents continue to answer in annual surveys that access to the waterfront is one of the important amenities they want from the city, and Bruce Beach Park will help add to that access.

Reeves said that, like Community Maritime Park before it, the new park will help serve as a catalyst for the city's economic growth.

"To have this open as an amenity for kids, for parents and grandparents who put a lot of value and memories into this area, to have this open for six months or seven months before phase two, I think, will be a big asset for us," Reeves said.

Nelly Korda’s record-tying win streak resonates with Scottie Scheffler, TOUR pros

Despite four wins in five starts, Scottie Scheffler says his run doesn’t compare

After winning the RBC Heritage in a Monday finish, Scottie Scheffler was asked if he felt a sense of competition between himself and Nelly Korda. It was a fair question, as the top-ranked men’s and women’s players have gone on simultaneous tears this spring. Scheffler has won four of his last five TOUR starts, finishing second in the other, while Korda tied an LPGA record Sunday by winning her fifth straight start at The Chevron Championship.

Yet despite being amidst a historic run as the first player since Tiger Woods (2007-08) to record five straight top-two finishes on TOUR, Scheffler didn’t see his stretch as comparable.

“One of the people here asked me, like, ‘Is this turning into a competition between you and Nelly?’ and I was like, I don't know, man, I think if it's a competition, she's got me pretty beat right now,” Scheffler said Monday. “Five wins in a row … it's pretty special stuff. To win four times in a row and then show up at a major championship and win is extremely impressive. So I'm extremely happy for her.”

Scheffler joked that Korda’s season-opening T16 finish was “just terrible; I can’t believe she did that” – clearly in jest – as the top-ranked women’s pro has since taken flight with victories at the LPGA Drive On Championship, Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship, T-Mobile Match Play and The Chevron Championship, the latter four of which have occurred in the last five calendar weeks.

With Sunday’s victory at the LPGA’s first major championship of 2024, Korda tied Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez with wins in five straight LPGA starts. Only three players have authored such streaks on TOUR: Tiger Woods, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan.

Woods won five straight starts across 2007-08, six straight across 1999-2000, and seven straight across 2006-07. Hogan won six straight starts in 1948. Nelson won a record 11 consecutive starts in 1945.

Korda’s run – which Scheffler would’ve paralleled if not for a one-stroke defeat to Stephan Jaeger at last month’s Texas Children’s Houston Open – holds a well-earned spot in golf history. Scheffler and his fellow TOUR pros have taken notice. Wyndham Clark called Korda’s run “amazing” after the RBC Heritage’s final round, and J.T. Poston described it as “hard to fathom.”

Last fall, Korda teamed with Tony Finau at the mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational, finishing T4. Finau came away impressed, in a way foreshadowing what was to come.

"In a sense, to me, I look up to Nelly," Finau said at the time. "Even though she’s younger than me, she’s an incredible golfer. She’s been the No. 1 player in the world in the women’s game, and she’s someone that I think quite frankly a lot of us can still even learn from, even on the men’s side."

After winning the Corales Puntacana Championship on Sunday for his eighth TOUR title, Billy Horschel threaded the runs of Korda and Scheffler.

“I had a three-week stretch where I finished second, first, first and I thought I was something special at that time, but what Nelly and Scottie are doing is unreal,” said Horschel.

“I can't imagine that. And over a period of time, not just five weeks in a row, they've done over six, seven, eight weeks. I mean, it's unreal golf. And to think about who they're playing against in today's generation of more talented players and doing what they're still doing, man, I'd say we're not going to see anything like that again, but I'm sure we will. You just have to stand up and applaud them because it's pretty special. You know, as a golf fan, I'm just lucky to be able to see that because at the end of the day, I'm a golf fan at heart.”

And fans have lately witnessed two generational superstars playing some of the best golf possible.

“I think we’ve all seen the golf swing; I wish I could see it more in person,” Scheffler said of Korda. “Obviously some great golf, some historic stuff, and hopefully she keeps it up.”
