While some upscale cruise lines are angling themselves as adults-only , there’s plenty of fun to be had for families looking to hit the high seas, without leaving luxury back on land. If your clan’s vacation plans call more for time in port, intimate digs, and white-glove service and less for mega-ships sporting whiz-bang features and massive crowds to match, seek out these five luxury cruise lines that not only accept children, but positively cater to them.

Crystal Cruises offers ocean, river, yacht, and air expeditions so travelers can explore by land, air, and sea.

Crystal Cruises

While high-end Crystal Cruises offers limited kids’ programming aboard every sailing, it really rolls out the red carpet for young cruisers on its designated family itineraries, operated aboard two recently revamped ocean liners, the 848-passenger Crystal Symphony and 980-guest Crystal Serenity . On these special summer and holiday voyages, kids ages three to 17 can participate in more robust supervised “Junior Activities” programming, with a focus on entertainment and enrichment. Dedicated spaces for both young’uns (ages three to 12) and teens (ages 13 to 17) are outfitted with crafts, gaming consoles, computers, and more; the teen space also boasts a video arcade. Elsewhere on the ship, children can find kid-friendly books and movies in the library or catch flicks—served with popcorn—in the theater.

There’s also a “Junior Cruiser’s” menu featuring favorites such as pizza and hamburgers, plus a dedicated daily kids’ newsletter outlining the day’s adventures, which could include scavenger hunts, pool parties, and teen discos.

Both ships offer an assortment of cabins primed for family accommodation, including third-berth ready cabins and options with connecting staterooms, where in-stateroom babysitting is available for kids one and older for a fee. On every sailing, children 11 and younger get half-price fares when sailing with two fare-paying adults, although the line occasionally runs kids sail free promos , too.

Minimum age to sail: Six months; kids ages 3 and under sail free

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas ships take on a family-friendly air on select summer and holiday voyages (including all of the line’s Alaska itineraries), thanks to its Club Mariner Youth Program , which brings kid-primed programming—helmed by professional youth counselors—on board to entertain children ages five to 17. Planned activities are broken down by age group, for kids ages five to eight (such as cookie decorating, pajama parties, and meet the captain events), nine to 12 (scavenger hunts, dodgeball, dance parties), and 13 to 17 (lounge nights and sports tournaments).

Although the line’s four vessels—with capacity for 450 to 750 passengers—don’t boast dedicated children’s facilities, the card/conference room becomes the makeshift hub for all things kid-related during these special sailings.

Standard kids’ fares for third and fourth berths start at $499, but the line often runs promos where kids sail free. Bonus: Kids’ fares include unlimited shore excursions, too.

Minimum age to sail: 12 months

Cunard Line

All three of Cunard’s upscale, Old World–styled ships tout dedicated children’s facilities, including two staff-helmed kids’ zones (for ages two to seven, or eight to 17), as well as a teens-only space, featuring age-appropriate activities such as sports, arts and crafts, and gaming. What really stands out, however, is Cunard’s complimentary night nursery for infants ages six to 23 months (an industry rarity), where wee ones can dream under nannies’ watchful eyes while parents have their turn to play (from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.). The line’s flagship 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 ups the ante further still with its full-scale planetarium and unique lessons such as fencing and ballroom dancing.

On any ship, youngsters in third and fourth berths sail at half price when traveling with two paying adults.

While there are no dedicated kids-themed sailings or family-focused shore excursions to speak of, Cunard’s 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth will sail to family-friendly Alaska (land of kid favorites such as dog sledding and whale-watching) for the first time in 20 years, with 10-night round-trip voyages out of Vancouver starting in May 2019.

Minimum age to sail: Six to 12 months, depending on the itinerary; infants under two years old sail free

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’s plush 500-passenger Europa 2 —ranked as the top ship in the world in the Berlitz Cruising and Cruise Ships 2019 guide—is wonderfully family-friendly, thanks to its onboard kids’ clubs, family-friendly suites, in-cabin babysitting services, and unexpected extras such as loaner baby monitors.

Tiny cruisers can make way for three different kids’ clubs broken down by age (two to three, four to 10, or 11 to 15), which are hubs for games, pizza-making, or crafts. In addition to the complimentary clubs, parents can hire in-cabin babysitting or sign up for a “sleep-in” service, in which children are whisked off to breakfast while the adults snooze.

Cruisers willing to adopt the more relaxed European approach to parenting can depend on the ship-provided video baby monitors to keep tabs on the wee ones back in the cabin, while they wander. Europa 2 ’s comfortable family-designed cabins come equipped with changing tables, mini kid-sized bathroom fixtures, and games; diapers and baby foods can be pre-ordered, too.

On holiday and school break sailings, there are even special shore excursions designed just for kids or families. Best of all, there is never a charge on Europa 2 for children 11 and under when sailing within the same cabin of a paying adult.

Minimum age to sail: eight months in Europe; two years old for other locations

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Posh Paul Gauguin Cruises’s 2017-debuted “ Stewards of Nature ” program, presented in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), welcomes families to explore Tahiti , French Polynesia , and more of the South Pacific during summer and December holiday sailings. While flitting from one fantasy island setting to the next aboard the 332-passenger Paul Gauguin, little cruisers (ages seven to 17) can set out on interactive naturalist-lead excursions to the islands and beaches (try snorkeling or dolphin-watching). Back on board, science activities (think guided telescope viewing sessions), ocean-themed games and crafts, and movie and pizza parties await.

Best of all, passengers 17 and younger sail free when sailing in the same stateroom with two paying adults. The caveat? Cabin capacity maxes out at three, so folks with more than one kid in tow would need to book an additional stateroom. Note that participation in the Stewards of Nature program, which is available on the line’s seven-night Tahiti & the Society Islands itinerary, requires a supplemental fee of $349 per child.

Cruising has long been a popular way for people to travel, especially for those that are retired. There’s something about getting to enjoy an endless amount of food, drinks, and onboard activities while the ship takes you from one destination to another. It’s surely a tempting way to see the world.

As cruise lines including Carnival and Royal Caribbean continue to introduce show-stopping attractions that kids love, such as roller coasters and laser tag, families are getting more and more into cruising, too.

However, as with any vacation parents and families consider taking with kids, we have to ask: what are the best cruise lines for families?

The answer is, it depends.

Just like when you choose a hotel, families look for certain amenities for a cruise vacation.

Entertaining kids on any vacation is usually top of mind when planning a trip. A kid-friendly cruise line will have entertainment for its youngest sailors . Kids’ and teens’ clubs, pools, and water slides are just a few of the kid-specific amenities that you’ll find on a lot of the cruises on this list.

Higher-end cruise lines like expedition cruises offer robust educational programs for kids as well as adults. A family-friendly cruise might also have a place for the adults to relax such as a spa or adults-only area.

The cabin size matters, too, just as it would at a traditional hotel or resort .

Larger families may prefer a suite over an inside cabin. But either way, the square footage matters — even more so if you’ll spend quite a bit of your time onboard the ship.

And lastly, food might be a factor in deciding what cruise line would be best for your family. Luxury cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will no doubt have a superb menu, but they may not be expert kid-pleasers like Disney Cruise Line when it comes to food.

Ocean Cay is MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas.

There are 3 types of cruises to choose from — ocean, river, and expedition cruises.

Ocean cruises are what most people have in mind when they think of taking a cruise. Most cruise lines have at least a few ocean cruise ships in their portfolio and they most popularly frequent the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska , and Hawaii.

River cruises have traditionally been more popular with older cruisers but are now appealing to the younger crowds as well. River cruises can be found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Most cruise lines don’t have kid or family programs and some outright don’t allow kids under 18, though Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways have partnered to offer river cruising for families (more on that later).

And finally, expedition cruises take adventure-seekers to curious and far-flung destinations like the Arctic, Antarctica , the Galapagos , and the Amazon. Expedition boats are much smaller than ocean liners, and the offerings on board are usually more tailored to history and education on expedition cruises .

With all of that in mind, here are the best cruise lines for families and kids.

The 5 Best Cruise Lines for Families and Kids

Mickey and Minnie Onboard Disney Cruise

Destinations :

  • Australia and New Zealand
  • Pacific Coast
  • Panama Canal
  • South Pacific

Number of Ships : 5

Disney Cruise Line is at the top of this list because it does a really fantastic job of catering to every member of the family. It has managed to bring the magic of Disney theme parks to the middle of the ocean — even the fireworks shows.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords .

Sailings feature character experiences just like at the Disney theme parks. You’ll also find live shows, a spa, nightclubs, and lounges. Each ship also has various kids’ clubs for passengers as young as 3 years old (a fee-based nursery is available for kids under 3), as well as pools with waterslides and aqua play areas. Older kids can enjoy a little independence in spaces designed just for them where they can play video games, watch TV, and meet other kids their age.

Dining options aboard Disney cruises include main and casual dining as well as adult-exclusive dining options. There are almost a dozen restaurants, cafes, and snack shops on each ship. Some nod to beloved Disney movie characters, like Lumiere’s on Disney Magic and Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder.

Within each ship, there are 4 categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Oceanview with Verandah, and Concierge. Within most categories are family rooms with bunk beds as well as accessible rooms.

Shore excursions include private tours, culinary adventures, and accessible excursions in more than 25 countries. Guests especially love Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , when cruising select Caribbean itineraries.

Destinations:

  • Arabian Gulf and North Africa
  • North America
  • South America

Number of Ships:  27

Royal Caribbean has a whopping 27 cruise ships in its portfolio with another, Utopia of The Seas, scheduled for delivery in 2024.

The cruise line features the world’s largest ships and the tallest water slide at sea . From arcades to roller coasters, there is never any shortage of thrill-seeking activities to find on board any Royal Caribbean cruise.

If you and your family want to make the most of a Royal Caribbean cruise, you’ll want to check out Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class and Amplified ships . These classes of ships feature even more exciting attractions including glow-in-the-dark laser tag and several on-deck pools.

Alternatively, there are places on every Royal Caribbean ship where you can get away from the excitement and relax. In the Solarium, where kids under 16 aren’t allowed, soothing music helps you to decompress while lounging on a daybed or hanging out in a hot tub.

Royal Caribbean also has a private island exclusively for its guests . Coco Cay is located in the Bahamas and features a 13-slide water park as well as the region’s largest wave pools and freshwater pools.

Kids always sail free on Royal Caribbean cruises.

Number of Ships : 24

Carnival Cruise Line has a reputation for being a party cruise line. However, the prices can rarely be beaten, which a lot of family travelers can appreciate.

Similar to Royal Caribbean, Carnival likes to wow its guests with nonstop fun. The onboard attraction Bolt Ultimate Sea Coaster — the first rollercoaster at sea — can be found on 2 of its ships: Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration .

There are 4 standard cabin types on Carnival cruise ships: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony, and Suite. There are also specialty rooms on select ships.

Family Harbor staterooms and suites are located near Family Harbor Lounges and come with a free evening of Night Owls babysitting, among other perks. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms and suites offer Elemis toiletries, spa-branded bathrobes and slippers, and priority spa reservations. And lastly, Havana staterooms and suites are located close to the Havana Bar and Pool. Some suites come with hammock chairs in the outdoor area.

New Orleans native and Food Network star Emeril Lagasse is the newest Chief Culinary Officer for all 24 ships with 3 original restaurants. There are plenty of dining options to choose from across the fleet with cuisines including Italian, Creole, burgers, and teppanyaki.

Onboard activities include Family Feud Live, waterslides, karaoke, and The Punchliner Comedy Club. Most but not all activities are included in the cruise fare. The IMAX theater and a few other attractions incur an additional cost.

Family-friendly excursions and tours include a wildlife safari and beach bonfire on an Alaskan cruise, panoramas and painting in Grand Turk, and a stingray adventure in the Bahamas.

Carnival has a private island that it shares exclusively with Holland America called Half Moon Cay.

Number of Ships : 19

Norwegian Cruise Line is best known for being the most innovative cruise line . Notably, it has done away with traditional cruise concepts such as inflexible dining schedules and even dress codes.

Among the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet there are 8 different classes of ships of varying capacities and offerings. The class of ship that tends to be most popular with families is the Breakaway Class . The 2 ships in this class, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway , each have a capacity of about 4,000 passengers. Between the 2 of them, they sail all over the world.

What makes this class of ships on Norweigan Cruise Lines so appealing to families is that it feels like a floating resort. These are the second-largest ships in Norwegian’s fleet. Activities on either ship include multiple pools, a waterpark, and even a full-size ropes course.

The stateroom categories aboard both the Norwegian Getaway and the Norwegian Breakaway include Studio, Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Spa, Club Balcony Suite, and The Haven.  Within those categories are another 30 stateroom types to choose from, including a 2-bedroom family villa . The Haven is an exclusive set of staterooms at the top level of the ship that features a 24-hour butler, concierge service, and sundeck.

In addition to room service, guests aboard Breakaway Class Norwegian Cruise Line ships can enjoy almost 2 dozen restaurants and bars. Not every restaurant is included in your cruise fare. Specialty dining options include seafood restaurant Ocean Blue, Brazilian steakhouse Moderno Churrascaria, and French restaurant Le Bistro.

In addition to excursions that you can book for an additional fee, Norwegian Cruise Line has a private island, Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas.

Lego Experience on MSC Cruises

  • Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar
  • Northern Europe
  • South Africa

Number of   ships : 19

MSC Cruises is a European-based cruise company with a growing footprint in North America and the Caribbean. It’s known for offering an affordable cruise option without a lot of the fluff of other cruise lines.

Even without a rollercoaster that jets out over the sea, MSC Cruises is still a popular option for family travelers.

For family cruisers in particular, MSC offers family excursions with special pricing for kids, and tours designed to be interactive as well as educational . There are also kids’ clubs aboard their ships in addition to the LEGO Experience on Board, which is a day dedicated to LEGO activities for the whole family.

Select ships feature a fully-immersive virtual reality experience, a movie theater, and an arcade room.

Passengers can expect the typical array of dining options aboard MSC Cruises as well as a special kids’ corner available at the buffet. There’s also a dessert corner and a wellness corner.

There are simply 4 stateroom categories aboard most MSC ships: Interior, Oceanview, Balcony, and MSC Yacht Club. Within the highest category of staterooms, MSC Yacht Club, guests can expect 24-hour butler service, complimentary access to the Thermal Suite in the MSC Aurea Spa, relaxation amenities, and more.

The 6 Best Luxury Cruise Lines for Families

For some families, a megaresort — or in the case here, a mega ship — just isn’t the way you’d like to spend your time on vacation.

There are more upscale and low-key cruise lines that cater to more discerning travel habits while also considering the needs of your youngest family members. In the luxury cruise category, you’ll find expedition and river cruises.

Luxury cruise lines come with a higher financial investment than the cruise lines listed above, but in return, you’ll find more inclusions, often better food, and far fewer onboard guests .

They also admittedly don’t offer as many action-packed attractions on board and some do not cater to especially young children. However, the cruise lines on this list each have unique kids and teens programs that you should be aware of.

Here are the best luxury cruise lines for families.

Camp at Sea on Celebrity Cruises

Number of Ships : 16

Celebrity Cruises features large ships but aims to provide a more high-end experience than you’ll find on cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises. It also does a great job of catering to multi-generational cruisers .

Camp at Sea is Celebrity Cruises’ kids’ club for kids 3 to 17 years old. Camp is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is broken into 4 age groups. Activities range from arts and crafts for the youngest age group to video game tournaments, scavenger hunts, and movie nights for older kids.

Family-friendly excursions include cultural tours, water sports, volcano and glacier hikes, and swimming with dolphins.

There are 4 classes of cruise ships offered by Celebrity Cruises: Edge Class (its newest and most innovative), Solstice Class, Millenium Class, and Galapagos Vessels.

Hot Tip: Cruisers say that Celebrity Equinox is the most family-friendly Celebrity ship thanks to 2 kids’ programs only available on this ship as well as over 100 adjoining cabins.

An array of staterooms exist to choose from on Celebrity Cruise ships, including family verandahs that sleep 5. Celebrity Cruise ships also feature staterooms that cater to solo travelers as well, so when traveling with a group, no one has to feel obligated to share a room.

There are a dozen dining options across each ship such as the French restaurant Normandie or the Mediterranean eatery Cyprus Restaurant. Specialty dining options include Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, Raw on 5 Restaurant serving fresh seafood, and Fine Cut Steakhouse.

The Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection debuts

  • Northern Europe and the Baltic

Number of Ships : 1

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection struggled to set sail when its first yacht was delivered during the height of the pandemic. But Ritz-Carlton hotel loyalists, eager to experience the 5-star hospitality at sea, waited patiently for the first yacht to embark. That finally happened late last year.

Its solo yacht Evrima , which is the Greek word for “discovery,” will be joined by Ilma in 2024.

Guests aboard a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessel can expect the same service they would on land, including the Ritz Kids program. At Ritz Kids, children ages 4 to 12 years old have the opportunity to participate in unique activities based on where they’re traveling . Programming mainly focuses on sustainability, marine life, sailing, and arts and culture.

There’s not an expectation for the yachts to frequently be teeming with children, but the cruise line expects to host more young passengers during summer and holiday school breaks.

The all-suite Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection features ocean views from every room, as well as 6 restaurants and in-suite dining. Guests can enjoy Southeast Asian cuisine from contemporary restaurant Talaat Nam or check out Mediterranean restaurant Mistral.

Ritz-Carlton is a Marriott Bonvoy brand and as such, you can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points when sailing the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . You’ll earn 5 points per $1 spent on the price of your cruise and hotel package and 1 Elite Night Credit per night of your sailing. Redemptions start at 180,000 Bonvoy points to save $1,000, followed by 90,000-point increments to save $500. Redeeming points this way is a tough sell, but the earning isn’t too bad, especially paired with a Marriott Bonvoy credit card ..

Lindblad family Alaska

  • Central America
  • French Polynesia
  • Vietnam and Cambodia

Lindblad Expeditions aims to be the premier expedition cruise line. Its National Geographic Global Explorers program offers exclusive and family-friendly programming for kids and teens.

Expedition cruises are all about exploring remote destinations like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and the Amazon. Expedition passengers can expect expert-led educational tours and excursions, and smaller ships that cater to less than 100 people .

With the National Geographic Global Explorers program, kids and teens get hands-on experience collecting and analyzing samples, learn how to take field notes, and even learn how to take slow-motion and timelapse videos to document their findings. The National Geographic Global Explorers program can be found on cruises to Antarctica, Alaska, Baja California, and Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions ships carry as few as 28 guests and at most 148. As such, cabins and suites vary across the company’s fleet of ships. It’s a little difficult to find out on your own which suites would accommodate more than 2 people or if you can get connecting cabins, though they do exist, as well as standard double-occupancy suites. As a tip, the best way to book a Lindblad Expedition cruise with your family may be to work with a travel advisor to ensure that you’re making the right investment.

Expedition cruisers seem to be less concerned about the dining options, however, Lindblad does boast that the dining is delicious and sustainably sourced.

Paul Gaugin cruise Tahiti environment kids program

  • Cook Islands
  • Society Islands

Paul Gauguin Cruises specializes in luxury cruises in Tahiti, Fiji, and the South Pacific. With just 1 cruise ship in its fleet, Paul Gauguin takes cruisers to ports that larger cruise ships can’t access.

The Gauguin has a limited capacity of 330 guests . Featuring a spa, 3 dining venues, and an onboard watersports marina, the ship is mostly informal luxury.

The Moana Explorer Program , in partnership with marine education and conservation foundation “Te mana o te moana,” teaches kids ages 7 to 15 about the wonders of the South Pacific.

Only available on summer and holiday sailings, the free program includes activities such as naturalist-led island and beach excursions, crafts, and science. Other fun ways that kids can spend their time aboard The Gauguin are with treasure hunts, stargazing, and designing their own Polynesian tattoos.

All 3 of the dining venues aboard The Gauguin offer a well-thought-out menu with both formal and informal dining options. La Veranda offers alfresco dining inspired by the destinations the ship sails to, Le Grill serves a buffet breakfast, grilled lunch favorites, salads, and tropical fruits, and L’Etoile is the main dining option and serves a fine dining menu with complimentary wine pairings.

Cap'n Knof welcomes families aboard every Hapa Lloyd Cruise.

  • Middle East
  • Pacific and South Seas

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has been called “the most luxurious cruise line you’ve never heard of” by Cruise Critic and is frequently featured on lists of the best cruises for families.

The cruise line claims to pay the same amount of attention to the children and teenagers onboard as the adults. Cap’n Knof, Hapag-Lloyd’s mascot, welcomes each family on board every sailing and participates in games with guests.

Childcare offers vary across the 5 ships. However, sailors can expect a kids’ club for children as young as 4 years old on Europa and Europa 2, the cruise line’s 2 ocean liners. Activities include language classes, unique children’s excursions designed around the interests of the kids onboard, and even spa treatments for kids as young as 8 years old.

Unfortunately, there is no kids program on the cruise lines’ 3 expedition ships: Hanseatic Nature, Hanseatic Inspiration, and Hanseatic Spirit .

Children 11 years old and younger sail free on Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and receive reduced pricing on arrival and departure packages.

AmaWaterways is a leader in luxury river cruising, with destinations that include the Nile River in Egypt and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, in addition to its European river cruises.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises feature local experts that tell the story of each location. What makes river cruises most attractive to some travelers is that you can travel slowly through a destination and spend more time learning about where you are . Disney’s river cruises are no exception with cultural immersion part of every day of the itinerary.

Hints of Disney can be found throughout the ship just as on Disney Cruise Line ocean ships. Mouse-shaped treats and Disney-themed karaoke are just a few of the features you’ll find on board.

Stateroom configurations range from inside to suites and can accommodate between 2 and 4 guests. Dining on board varies depending on the ship that’s sailing. This information can be found on the highlights page of each sailing’s itinerary.

Paid moment from American Express and Delta

With complimentary summer-camp-like kids’ programs led by youth counselors, alongside a host of attractions, it's no surprise the best family cruises deliver an environment where every family member can have fun on vacation. In addition to family time, kids get to hang out with other kids while parents and grandparents are free to be adults.

Youngsters are a major part of cruise ship design, from play rooms and teen clubs to crew members who know how to keep young people happy. Choose your ship wisely, because newer and recently renovated ships tend to have the most exciting attractions (check out our list of best cruise ships in the world if you want to know more). Accommodations at sea can be tight, so splurge on the largest cabin or suite you can afford; there is such a thing as too much togetherness on any trip. Beyond that, read our picks for the best cruise lines for families—and get going with booking. (Fares shown are per adult, with reduced fares for kids sharing a cabin.)

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad has partnered with National Geographic for a kid-friendly adventure program.

Royal Caribbean

For families, a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s massive ships —some can carry more than 6,000 passengers—is as exciting as going to an amusement park. Collectively, the ships offer ice skating rinks, simulated surfing machines, zip-lines, bumper cars, laser tag, carousels, and thrill slides. The Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) includes fun science experiments, while teens get to party in their own disco. The new largest ship in the world, the 6,998-passenger Wonder of the Seas , boasts a fantastical undersea-themed Wonder Playscape, an outdoor playground with climbing walls, slides, games, and interactive features — such as a mural featuring sea creatures that come to life at the slightest touch. The ship sails from Barcelona and Rome (the port of Civitavecchia) this summer and fall. Seven-night sailings from $952 .

Disney Cruise Line

The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Teens also have dedicated spaces onboard: Vibe for teens ages 14-17 and Edge for those between the ages of 11-14. Three-night Bahamas sailings from Port Canaveral from $1,751 in winter 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral on Mardi Gras this summer from $549.

RitzCarlton Yacht

Ritz-Carlton's all-suite Evrima yacht comes staffed with an on-board youth counselor.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Norwegian Prima will be cruising from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), beginning in December. Seven-night western Caribbean sailings in winter 2023 from $849.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Seven-night Discovery Princess sailings to Alaska this summer from $399.

Lindblad Expeditions

For multigenerational families who prefer a nature-focused, soft-adventure experience, Lindblad partners with National Geographic for a program that has kids collecting plankton, driving inflatable Zodiacs, and otherwise earning points to become a National Geographic Global Explorer. The program is available on cruises in the Galapagos, Alaska, Baja, Mexico, and Antarctica—all places you can spot wild creatures and the kids are encouraged to record sightings in a field book. Nine-night summer sailings in the Galapagos from $7,710.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

On the luxury side, Ritz-Carlton’s first yacht , the all-suite Evrima , launches in late August with year-round signature Ritz Kids programming. Kids ages 4-12 get a dedicated space staffed by a full-time youth counselor. The creative program features an environmental element—kids may participate an upcycle art challenge or a water-sampling science experiment. Unlike the complimentary programs on mainstream lines, this one comes with an additional charge: $45 each for three-hour morning and afternoon sessions, and $65 for early-evening programming. Seven-night Caribbean sailings from San Juan from $4,900.

12 tips for surviving a luxury cruise with kids

Erica Silverstein

Take the kids on a luxury cruise — how dare you? Luxury cruises are the domain of well-heeled, mature couples looking for fine dining, personal service, elegant suites and onboard spaces free of loud, energetic children. Or so say luxury cruise fans on online forums whenever someone floats the idea of treating their family to an upscale cruise.

Ignore them. You shouldn't have to sacrifice your preferred luxury standards just because you're cruising as a foursome (or more) rather than a twosome. And unless your cruise line expressly prohibits children under a certain age, there's no reason why you can't bring the younger members of your family along.

The key to luxury cruising with kids is to know what to expect from the ship and what to expect from your kids, and then plan accordingly. If you're ready to ditch Disney 's jungle cruise ride for a week or more in favor of an upscale cruise ship, follow these 12 tips for a successful luxury sailing with your junior cruisers. For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Take a hard look at your kids

Is your child well behaved and polite, or do they throw massive tantrums routinely at dinner? Does your teen prefer to make friends on vacation or hang out with her family? Does your middle-schooler get easily bored without nonstop activities or can he find his own fun anywhere?

The answers to these questions will help you decide if an adult-focused, luxury cruise vacation is right for your family. If your child can't handle long dinners, a ship without water slides and rock-climbing walls, and minimal to no other kids on board, now might not be the right time to splurge on that dream luxury cruise. You can always wait a few years and try again.

Then again, if your budding foodies love to try new cuisines, earned airline elite status as a toddler and are on first-name basis with the staff at the Ritz, they will fit in just fine.

Choose ships with kids programming

luxury cruises kid friendly

Some upscale cruise lines outright ban children ( Viking ) or have an age minimum ( Windstar ), but others welcome kids and offer special activities during sailings with larger-than-usual numbers of children. Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers its Club Mariner program for kids ages 5 to 17, with daily programming led by youth counselors. Paul Gauguin Cruises runs the Moana Explorer Program to introduce kids to the natural wonders of the South Pacific on summer and holiday sailings.

Other lines, such as Seabourn , might not have an official kids program but will put on activities when families are sailing in abundance. Be sure to ask your travel agent what to expect if you're cruising with younger kids who could benefit from age-appropriate games and crafts.

Plan for family time

On a big ship, your kids could spend the entire day in the kids club or running around with a pack of teens to the sports court and water slides, leaving the adults to enjoy the spa or solarium in peace. On a luxury cruise ship, with fewer options for children, you should count on lots of family together time instead.

This is a good thing. Save your massage for a weekend at home and date night for your regular sitter. You don't have many chances to spend whole days with your kids without work emails and chores getting in the way. Embrace this opportunity to go to shows together, laugh as your kid tries foie gras for the first time, or sip tea, nibble scones and just talk to each other. The together time is a greater luxury than you might have imagined.

Choose the right itinerary

luxury cruises kid friendly

If you're concerned that long days at sea on a luxury cruise ship won't go over well with your kids, look for an itinerary that's in port nearly every day. You can plan family fun off the ship, and then come back on board for gourmet dinners and an evening show or in-cabin movie before hitting the sack. Everyone wins.

Also, make sure you pick a destination that's age appropriate. Little kids might prefer a tropical cruise with plenty of beach time versus strolling the cobblestoned streets of quaint towns in France and Italy. Active tweens and teens might relish zip-lining, hiking and kayaking in Alaska , while bookish kids might itch to see historic sites in Greece and Turkey.

Let your kids select their onboard activities

Other luxury cruisers will tell you that there are no activities for kids on fancy cruise ships, but I've watched plenty of kids on high-end sailings and can tell you that's not true. Kids like all kinds of activities, not just the ones planned for them.

On one Seabourn cruise, I was on a daily trivia team with a family that included a 10-year-old girl. She was enthusiastic about the daily game and contributed several answers. Another boy and his grandmother always showed up to afternoon tea and he seemed happy as a clam. I've seen kids on Regent Seven Seas enjoying the pool, not to mention the ice cream. My own kids have surprised me with their interest in the captain's Q&A or games of shuffleboard, so don't assume that just because there isn't specific kids programming that your kids will be bored.

Make use of room service

Luxury cruises are known for spacious cabins and complimentary in-room meal service. Make use of these perks by ordering meals to your cabin when the kids are tired or can't sit through a leisurely dinner. They can eat chicken fingers while watching cartoons, and you don't have to miss out on the evening's culinary selections. You can even ask for dinner to be served course by course from the main restaurant.

Or order coffee for you and cereal for them to arrive in the morning while everyone's getting ready, and then meander up to the buffet for a hot breakfast without anyone having a hangry meltdown.

Bring snacks — or find them on board

No matter where you travel, I'm adamant you should always bring snacks for kids. Whether you need a mid-excursion pick-me-up or an alternative to a fancy lunch, be sure to have pre-packaged bars, applesauce pouches or bags of goldfish crackers or pretzels at the ready to prevent meltdowns. Cruise ships don't always have kid snacks available.

Even if you don't bring your own food, remember you're on a luxury cruise. Ask your butler to bring a selection of kid-friendly foods (cheese and crackers, grapes, popcorn, cookies) at 3 p.m. each day instead of smoked salmon finger sandwiches or bacon-wrapped dates — though you might also learn your kids have a secret appetite for blinis with caviar. If you can't order it midday, save cereal and yogurt from breakfast to keep in your suite's minifridge. And find the onboard cafe with all-day snacks where you can swing by for a quick bite anytime the munchies strike.

Pack entertainment

Luxury cruises will have some planned daytime entertainment, but not as much as on the humongous cruise ships. Trivia, cooking demonstrations and guest lectures are all popular pastimes, but many luxury cruisers prefer a relaxing day of playing cards in a lounge or reading by the pool.

If your family needs more excitement, you'll have to bring the fun. Pack those handheld video game players, tablets loaded with movies and games, a deck of cards, and maybe even some travel-sized board games. For little kids, you might want to bring a coloring pad and crayons, sticker books, dolls or toy cars — whatever keeps your lot happy on a slow day at sea.

Engage with the crew

luxury cruises kid friendly

If some of your shipmates are standoffish, I can bet you the crew won't be. Many have families they've left behind at home, and they don't have the chance to interact with little kids so often on the high-end ships. They will be eager to dote on your junior cruisers, bringing them special treats or making them origami animals out of daily programs. Engage with the crew members and they will help you keep the kids happy and the stress off your shoulders.

Don't count on babysitting

Most luxury cruise lines do not offer in-room babysitting — and if they do, it's only if there is a willing female crew member available at the time you need. It's a courtesy, not a guaranteed service. Don't take a luxury cruise assuming someone will be able to stay in the room with your sleeping children while you enjoy the onboard nightlife.

If you're really intent on having adult alone time on the ship, you'll want to bring your own nanny or babysitter for your children. That might mean booking your kids and the sitter in a room adjoining yours, or sharing a suite with your family and booking the nanny into a lower-category cabin. It will likely mean booking a second cabin, which is not cheap on a high-end line, but the expense might be worth it if everyone enjoys the trip more with an extra set of eyes and hands.

Ignore the sideye

Unfortunately, while many cruisers will be thrilled to see kids on board, some of your shipmates will give you the look or mutter comments about your choice to sail with children — especially in a moment when your kids aren't being 100% perfect angels. Don't let them yuck your yum. You have as much right as they have to bring your family on a luxurious cruise ship.

Trust me, I've seen plenty of adults whine and tantrum or otherwise behave in a less-than-becoming manner on upscale cruise ships. Your kids are acting their age — those folks knew better. Still, most of the kids I've noticed on luxury cruises were having a great time and not causing any trouble.

Take the high road, nod and smile at the naysayers, and go on enjoying your fine family getaway.

Consider a suite on a mass-market cruise

luxury cruises kid friendly

If after reading these tips, you're second-guessing your decision to take the kids on a luxury cruise, consider booking a suite on one of the big, mass-market ships. Lines like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line pamper suite guests with exclusive restaurants, lounges, pools and sun decks for that upscale experience, while still giving you access to all the kid programming, Broadway shows, laser tag games, water slides, rock-climbing walls, ropes courses, zip-lines and go-karts available on board.

You can enjoy fine dining, roomy cabins and personal service while knowing your kids have plenty of choices to keep them busy. Plus, you can send them off to the kids club to party until 10 p.m. while you get that much-needed date night.

Bottom line

Luxury cruise ships are built for grownups, but that doesn't mean you and your kids can't have an amazing vacation on an upscale ship. Plan for success, but leave space for surprises, and you'll end up with a memorable family vacation that doesn't compromise the luxury standards you prefer.

How to Take a Luxury Cruise with Kids

Salerno

Luxury travel for the entire family is a fast-expanding category and some terrific cruise options do exist – but amenities geared toward kids are definitely more limited than what you’ll find on larger megaships. If you’re wondering how to take a luxury cruise with kids, here are answers to several key questions.

Which luxury cruise ships allow kids?

Most luxury cruise lines allow children to sail, but only a few have kids’ clubs or facilities with organized activities. The others require that kids be supervised by their parents at all times, which could work for families with children content to occupy themselves with reading or technology. Here’s how luxury cruise lines are currently accommodating kids:

  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises : Regent ’s 490-750-passenger luxury ships – Seven Seas Voyager , Seven Seas Mariner , Seven Seas Navigator , Seven Seas Explorer , and Seven Seas Splendor – feature a Club Mariner program for kids, overseen by trained counselors. The catch: It’s only available on select sailings, generally summer months and holiday sailings, when kids can cruise for special rates. Activities, such as arts and crafts, games, dance parties, and movie nights, are geared to age groups 5-8, 9-12, and 13-17. Children must be at least a year old to sail.
  • Paul Gauguin Cruises : Families are welcome aboard 330-guest m/s Paul Gauguin , which sails year-round in Tahiti and the South Pacific – and there’s a complimentary Moana Explorer Program for kids ages 7-15 that includes interactive nature discovery during summer and holiday sailings. Kids must be at least one year old to sail, the ship may restrict the number of children onboard, and anyone under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult age 21 or older. The ship features two new Luxury Suites sleeping four guests, as well as eight adjoining balcony staterooms that can become four suites, each sleeping four guests.
  • Windstar Cruises : Small-ship cruise line Windstar welcomes children ages 8 and older aboard its sailing ships (Wind Star, Wind Surf , and Wind Spirit) and yachts ( Star Pride , Star Breeze, and Star Legend), accommodating 148 to 342 guests, but any passenger under 21 needs to share a cabin or suite with an adult who is at least 25 years old. That means even college-age teens can’t stay in a separate cabin from an accompanying adult. Some cabins also have a third berth to accommodate one child or teen. There are no organized onboard activities for kids aboard Windstar ships.
  • Seabourn : Children need to be six months old to take a non-transocean cruise and 12 months old to take a transocean cruise aboard any all-suite Seabourn ship – Seabourn Odyssey , Seabourn Sojourn , Seabourn Quest , Seabourn Encore , and Seabourn Ovation – but kids are few and far between on most cruises. Some Verandah Suites aboard Seabourn’s 450-to-600-guest ships can accommodate one child, while a limited number of Premium Suites can sleep more. The vessels are definitely geared toward couples, however, and there are no organized activities for kids. Guests must be at least 6 years old to sail on any Antarctic or Expedition cruises.
  • Silversea Cruises : Children 6 months and older are allowed on Silversea’s small luxury ships – Silver Cloud , Silver Wind , Silver Shadow , Silver Whisper , and Silver Spirit – but those under age 18 must be accompanied, in the same suite or a connecting suite, by a parent or other responsible adult over the age of 21 for the entire voyage and on all shore excursions. Children under 8 may be restricted from participating in certain shore excursions. The line’s expedition ship, Silver Explorer , will not accept children under one year of age and those under 6 will not be allowed to board a Zodiac for any expedition or excursion. There are no programs for kids aboard any Silversea ship.
  • Oceania Cruises : Kids from age 1 to 17 are welcome to cruise aboard Oceania ’s six mid-size ships – Oceania Nautica , Oceania Insignia , Oceania Regatta , Oceania Sirena , Oceania Marina , and Oceania Riviera – but they must occupy the same stateroom or suite as an adult who is 18 or older. Worth noting: Third and fourth guests in any stateroom are charged 50% of the cruise fare paid by the first two guests. There are no organized programs for kids or teens, but the 1,250-guest ships (Marina and Riviera) have paddle board tables, a putting green, a fitness track, and an Artist’s Loft.
  • Azamara : This boutique cruise line operates three 690-to-702-guest ships – Azamara Journey , Azamara Quest , and Azamara Pursuit – allows children who are 6 months or older (12 months for transoceanic voyages), but as this blog explains, parents are on their own when it comes to packing food for babies and toddlers and entertaining kids of all ages.
  • SeaDream Yacht Club : SeaDream ’s two intimate 112-passenger luxury yachts – SeaDream I and SeaDream II – are geared to couples and groups of friends, but they do welcome children ages 1 to 17 when accompanied by an adult age 18 or older (who must supervise them at all times). Several Yacht Club staterooms on both ships can be connected as Commodore Suites, sleeping four guests. A water sports platform and water toys are fun diversions for older kids.
  • Celebrity Cruises : Although Celebrity is considered a premium cruise line and its ships are larger than most luxury vessels, its cruises are now all-inclusive (meaning beverages, Wi-Fi and gratuities are part of the cruise fare), elevating it closer to the luxury realm – and there are plenty of kids aboard. Kids and teens programs include Camp at Sea (for ages 3-12) and Teen Club (for cruisers ages 13-17). Some cabins sleep up to four, there are many connecting stateroom options, and the Royal Suites On Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex accommodate up to 10 guests.
  • Disney Cruise Line : While not a luxury cruise line per se, Disney does offer upscale amenities geared to creating a fun cruise experience for the entire family. Kids will be entertained aboard Disney Magic , Disney Wonder , Disney Dream , and Disney Fantasy – and the ships’ adults-only areas offer a reprieve for mom and dad.

Which luxury cruise ships are good for teens?

Teens can be tough travel companions – especially on luxury cruise ships primarily designed to pamper adults, not entertain kids. But these ships have enough luxurious amenities for mom and dad, while still offering activities, albeit more traditional than cutting-edge, for teens.

  • Celebrity’s Solstice-Class and Edge-Class ships : Celebrity’s ships might not have thrill-seeker amenities, but they have more teen passengers than most smaller luxury ships along with a Teen Club, where those 13 to 17 can hang out with friends and participate in Xbox competitions, teen parties, and culinary classes.
  • Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy : If your teens have outgrown Disney princesses and pirates, but are still entertained by Marvel superheroes and Star Wars characters, look into Disney Magic sailings that feature Marvel Day at Sea or Disney Fantasy sailings with a Star Wars Day at Sea .
  • Norwegian ships with The Haven : An alternative is to go big but book The Haven – the luxury enclave on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships – to enjoy spacious suites and elevated amenities, including a pool, lounge and dining area exclusively for Haven guests. Onboard Norwegian Breakaway , Norwegian Getaway , Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Joy , and Norwegian Encore , adults can enjoy the service and sophisticated ambience of the Haven, while teens can experience the age-designated clubs and onboard thrills of these megaships: waterslides, laser tag, virtual reality gaming, and the only race tracks at sea (aboard Bliss, Joy and Encore).

Which luxury cruise lines do not allow kids?

Two cruise lines are strictly adults-only, with no one under age 18 allowed onboard: All Viking Ocean , Viking River , and Viking Expedition (coming in 2022) cruises, as well as all sailings on Virgin Voyages ’ new Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady (debuting later in 2021).

Are kids allowed on river cruises?

For the most part, no – and almost any kid would be bored by traditional river itineraries. But several cruise lines do offer special family sailings timed to summer and holiday vacation periods and tweaked to include kid-friendly excursions and activities.

  • AmaWaterways has partnered with Adventures by Disney to offer family-oriented sailings on the Seine, Rhine, and Danube rivers. Age limits vary by itinerary.
  • Tauck Bridges is a family-friendly program river cruise program by Tauck that welcomes kids ages 4 and older (8 or older is recommended on certain itineraries) on cruises of the Seine, Rhine, Rhone, Danube, and Douro rivers.
  • The Generations Collection by Uniworld is a series of European river cruises designed for multi-generational travel and welcoming kids 4 and up on select summer and holiday sailings.

What luxury cruise itineraries are best for kids?

Because smaller ships don’t have the activities, kids and teen clubs, and entertaining amenities of a megaship, families booking a luxury cruise need to choose an itinerary that offers onshore options appealing to junior sailors. If traveling with kids under age 10, think sun-and-sand itineraries, such as the Eastern Caribbean or Western Caribbean , to enjoy beach days, watersports, and interaction with marine life. Cruises to Alaska , Costa Rica or the Galapagos – offering opportunities for nature-based adventure and wildlife-spotting – are ideal for kids age 10 and above. Older teens will likely enjoy exploring the charming ports and ancient sites of the Mediterranean and Greek Islands . The key is to plan daytime shore activities around what interests your kids, since onboard life on most luxury ships is designed to indulge grown-ups.

Cruising with kids no longer means joining the hordes on three-star ships. Luxury cruise lines are coming on board with a range of new children’s facilities. Louise Goldsbury explores some of the best in kid-friendly cruising.

What could be more luxurious than a holiday where all meals, entertainment, transportation, accommodation (and often, free child care and butlers) are rolled into one; where the destination changes from city to village to private island, with no effort required? The concept of cruising is as family-friendly as it gets, and finally, an increasing number of five-star ships are welcoming all ages. Here are our picks for some of the best kid-friendly luxury cruises.

Crystal Cruises

This award-winning cruise line offers a huge range of family-friendly activities for kids aged three–17. Kids-only play areas including Fantasia host games, crafts, televisions equipped with gaming consoles and computers, while Waves is like an old-fashioned video arcade. During holiday cruises and nearly all summer sailings, a fully supervised Junior Activities program for children is available. Activities may include scavenger hunts, cooking classes, fashion shows, trivia, sports and more.

Waves Fantasia Room Crystal Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Offered in partnership with Te Mana O Te Moana, a South Pacific marine education and conservation foundation, Paul Guaguin Cruises’ Moana Explorer Program aims to get kids aged 7–17 hands-on with the natural wonders of the region (although all members of the family are welcome). Kids will love naturalist-led island excursions, science activities and games offered through the complimentary program.

Paul Gauguin cruises

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

On Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ MS Europa 2 , kids are fully catered for. Little ones aged four–10 have their own kids’ club, while the older crowd, aged 11–15, gain access to teens’ club. Both offer younger guests the chance to get creative via musical workshops, sports, games and more.

Star Clippers

For children interested in traditional sailing, these four-masted replica clipper ships open up a different kind of nautical experience. Older kids and teens are allowed to get involved hands-on, from raising the sails to climbing the mast. In the absence of dedicated children’s facilities, they tend to hang out with the younger crew members and enjoy the sports offered from the ships’ marina platforms.

A spokesperson said Seabourn  attracts families during certain periods, usually on seven-day Mediterranean or Alaska cruises in the Northern Hemisphere summer. At that time, the line employs youth counsellors to organise activities, scavenger hunts and performances of plays and concerts. The ships also have Wii consoles and board games.

Seabourn Encore

Although it is does not have any kids clubs or child care staff, a spokesperson said Silversea welcomes families and it is becoming “quite common” for multi-generational groups to cruise together.

Sea Cloud Cruises

River cruising is another option to consider if you are concerned about seasickness or travelling with a large crowd of passengers. Though there are no children’s facilities available, board games are available with Sea Cloud Cruises . Special discounts have also been released for single parents travelling with one child.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The world’s most all-inclusive luxury line, Regent offers the Club Mariner program, which is split into age groups (five–eight, nine–12 and 13–17) on selected departures in Europe.  Seven Seas Voyager  and  Mariner   have among the most expansive pool decks found on luxury ships, with outdoor hot tubs and table tennis.

The best luxury cruise lines for families with children

by Guest Blogger - June 8, 2018

Crystal Cruises Kids

Cruises can be amazing holidays for children, and you may be familiar with cruise lines such as Disney and Royal Caribbean who offer some amazing facilities for children. But is luxury cruising suitable for children too? Well, that depends on which cruise line you choose.

These cruises are great for children…

Hapag-lloyd cruises.

Hapag Lloyd Family Cruise

When it comes to luxury family cruises, Hapag-Lloyd are simply the best, paying just as much attention to the wants and needs of children as they do to adults. Their two luxury cruise ships MS EUROPA and MS EUROPA 2 are ideally equipped for families.

Children under the age of 8-months are not permitted to travel on-board within Europe. For the rest of the world, children must be at least two years old. All family cruises are scheduled in line with the main holiday periods, with attractive price advantages for those cruising with little ones. Children up to and including 11 years travel for free when staying in a suite with one or two fully paying guardians. Children ages 12-15 pay £60/£70 per night when staying in a suite with one or two fully paying guardians.

On-board the MS EUROPA, children have their own on-shore programme, with special excursions for ages 4+. Back on-board, children and their supervisors can all eat together at the Lido Cafe where special children’s menus are offered. A baby-sitting service can be provided and, if you want to sleep in peace, staff can collect your youngsters at 8am for breakfast to give you a lie in!

MS EUROPA 2 offers the Knopf Club for children 2-3, Kid’s Club for those aged 4-10 and the Teen’s Club for those aged 11-15. On days at sea and upon request, there is a late-riser service for parents where your little ones are collected from 8am from your suite.

Staff also put together a free baby welcome package for you and your child (aged up to 3 years) including:

  • Changing bag with baby care products, disposable changing mats and a baby bib
  • Selection of branded nappies and wet wipes and a selection of baby food in jars and milk formula
  • Facilities in the suite include a changing mat and baby monitor, travel cot, baby bath and toilet seat insert and a nappy bin
  • Sterilisation of bottles and the warming of baby formula or food can be provided by suite service

Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises Kids

Crystal Cruises tick all the boxes for families with children, with both ships offering children’s clubs for kids aged 3-17.  Each ship has a dedicated play room on-board, with children free to come and go as they please. Children are supervised during activities with the Junior Activities Director, though children under the age of three must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

On sailings with the Junior Activities Programme, children can partake in a range of activities including:

  • Scavenger Hunts
  • Story Times and pyjama parties
  • Pizza parties
  • Teen karaoke
  • Mini Olympics
  • Pool games and paddle tennis

The main venue for children’s activities is Fantasia – offering games, crafts, popular Sony PlayStation® and Xbox 360™ kiosks, large-screen TVs, board games and personal computers. There is also a video arcade at Waves for teens aged 13-17. The Library also offers a selection of children’s’ books and videos for in-room viewing.

Kids of all ages can enjoy the special Junior Cruiser’s menu, with the culinary staff able to prepare custom dishes. The Trident Grill also serves complimentary hot dogs, burgers and pizza.

On all sailings an in-room baby-sitting service for children aged 1 year and older can be offered. This is on a first-come, first-serve basis with fees starting at $10 per hour for one child, $15 per hour for two children and $20 per hour for three children. The maximum number which can be supervised by one baby-sitter is three.

Children aged 11 or younger also only pay 50% of the minimum fare when accompanied by two full-fare paying adults. Crystal Symphony offers ten connecting staterooms and 89 staterooms with a third berth available. Crystal Serenity offers 50 connecting staterooms and 154 staterooms with a third berth avaialble.

These cruises could be okay for your family…

Regent seven seas cruises.

Multi-generational family cruise on-board Regent

Children must be at least one year old when boarding the cruise. Regent offers the Club Mariner Youth Program for children aged 5-17, including fun and interactive activities while sailing to a breadth of destinations.

Activities for the program include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Meet the Captain
  • Board games and bingo
  • Wacky Olympics
  • Mini-putt tournaments
  • Dance parties
  • Movie nights

Oceania Cruises

Children must be at least 6-months old at the day of sailing, with no care, entertainment or supervision of children offered.

However, guests travelling to Alaska can partake in the Alaska Explorer Youth Program. This is designed for children aged 5-12 and is supervised by experienced and enthusiastic youth counsellors. The program includes games, activities and Alaska-inspired special events.

These cruises are not recommended for children…

Azamara club cruises.

Though Azamara accept guests of any age, they advise families sailing with children under the age of 18 that the on-board ambience and experience caters mainly to adults, and there are no activities for children or a baby-sitting service.

Seabourn refuses children aged 6-months or less at the time of sailing and certain transoceanic sailings also have limitations on children aged 12-months or less. Though families are able to travel on Seabourn, the cruise line dos not actively cater to young travellers and there are no facilities or programmes in place.

Silver Explorer and Silver Discoverer cannot accommodate children under the age of one, Silver Galapagos cannot accommodation children under the age of six and Silver Cloud, Silver Wind, Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper and Silver Spirit cannot accommodate infants under the age of six-months.

There are no specialised programmes for children on-board Silversea and the cruise line does not promote activities, care or supervise children while on-board. Silversea also has limitations on their shore excursions for children up to the age of eight.

Viking Ocean

Children under the age of 18 are not permitted to sail on-board Viking Ocean ships. There are no programmes or activities catered to a younger audience, with more on-board facilities aimed at older couples, friends and family.

Deal: Costa Cruises may not be as popular as some other cruise lines on our list, but it's a worthwhile option for cruisers looking to sail through Europe, the Middle East or South America. The cruise line allows kids traveling as third or fourth guests to sail for free with two adults in the same cabin, and this promotion applies to passengers ages 2 to 17. This offer is valid on all sailings offered by the line, many of which feature destinations in desirable ports along the Mediterranean such as Barcelona , Marseille and Rome .

Family-friendly perks: Costa Cruises vessels offer abundant family-friendly amenities, from water parks to arcades to mini golf. Kids clubs are available for children ages 3 to 11, and they provide entertainment like arts and crafts, themed parties, and games galore. A teen zone also hosts cruisers ages 12 to 17 who want to mingle, sing karaoke and play group sports when ships aren't in port.

Deal: MSC Cruises lets children younger than 18 cruise for free on select itineraries, depending on the ship's capacity. (Other exclusions or eligibility requirements may apply.) Kids must be the third or fourth guests traveling in the same cabin as their parents (at least two adults) for the deal to be valid; note that any port fees and taxes still apply to children's fares.

Family-friendly perks: MSC Cruises offers a variety of leisure activities and amenities designed specifically for kids. On board, youngsters can take advantage of perks from water parks with slides and swimming pools to Broadway-style shows and interactive dinners. The line also hosts fun family excursions and a "Lego Experience On Board" event on every cruise. In addition, there are a myriad of amenities for parents to enjoy while the youngest passengers are occupied by one of five dedicated kids clubs.

I went on 2 of Royal Caribbean's largest and newest cruise ships. I enjoyed them, but they're not for everyone.

  • I've sailed on Royal Caribbean's largest cruise ships , Wonder of the Seas and Icon of the Seas.
  • Both megaships are jam-packed with people, amenities, and dining options.
  • But if you want a quiet cruise to unique destinations, they might not be for you.

Insider Today

Before booking a vacation at sea, travelers should always research the best cruise line and ship for their needs.

If you're looking for a cheap and fast trip, try Margaritaville at Sea . Craving something more upscale? Consider Oceania Cruises.

But if you're looking for high-end sailing to unique destinations, I'd suggest avoiding Royal Caribbean's megaships .

Royal Caribbean has become synonymous with giant, family-friendly cruise ships

By 2028, Royal Caribbean wants one-third of its fleet to be megaships.

The latest addition, the 1,196-foot-long and 248,663-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, entered service in January, unseating Wonder of the Seas as the world's largest cruise liner.

Together, the two vessels can fit over 19,000 people — about 4,500 crew and 14,500 guests. Each ship has eight neighborhoods and there are 29 bars and 48 eateries between them.

I've attended complimentary sailings on both Wonder and Icon, the longest of which was three nights on the latter. From their colorful pool decks to the inescapable crowds, as a solo-adult traveler, I was equal parts entertained, overwhelmed, and overstimulated.

Related stories

But admittedly, I had fun. I do love a good waterslide; Wonder has three of them and Icon has six.

If you want to go on a cruise with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini golf — Royal Caribbean's megaships could be your best option.

Wonder and Icon are jam-packed with activity spaces like ice-skating rinks and ziplines.

But don't expect a peaceful retreat. The rowdy, bar-hopping adults and screaming children at the water playground aren't conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Megavessels might not be for you if you want a quiet cruise

If you want a relaxing vacation — maybe one that doesn't involve crowds of children — you shouldn't stay on either Royal Caribbean yacht.

There are many ways to have a luxury vacation on Icon of the Seas . But unless you want to pay for upcharged amenities at every turn, you'd be better off spending more upfront to reserve a premium cruise line — especially if you're interested in cruising for the destinations, not the ships.

After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, Icon and Wonder exclusively sail in the Caribbean.

Some destinations, such as French Polynesia, have set restrictions on which cruises can travel there amid concerns about pollution and overcrowding.

If stopping at these ports — or, really, anywhere outside the Caribbean — is at the top of your vacation wish list, you'll have to travel on a smaller Royal Caribbean ship or go with a different cruise line like Oceania , Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas.

You might not get a waterpark, but you'll get a quieter vacation to locations no megaship will likely be allowed to visit.

Norwegian cruise mogul’s success secrets: Focus on the wealthy and absolutely no kids allowed

Viking cruise at the French Mediterannean port of Marseille.

Torstein Hagen founded his cruise line with a few simple principles in mind. Among them: focus on the wealthy and intellectually curious; no nickel-and-diming; and no kids.

Almost three decades on, his Viking Holdings Ltd. is among the world’s biggest luxury cruise operators, and Hagen’s fortune will surpass $5 billion as the company completes its initial public offering in New York.

Viking  raised  $1.54 billion from the oversubscribed share sale, showing that investors are willing to pour money into a sector that was decimated by the Covid pandemic and now is rebounding.

The shares  priced near the top  of the marketed range, according to a  regulatory filing , valuing the company at around $10.4 billion. Hagen controls roughly half of the shares, making him the second-richest person in the industry after Carnival Corp. Chairman Micky Arison, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The listing also marks the pinnacle of an endeavor that, in Hagen’s  words , began with “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships” seeking to woo customers who sought “more than just a vacation.” As the 81-year-old chief executive officer has often told journalists: Viking cruises are for the thinking person, not the drinking person.

Viking representatives didn’t respond to requests for comment on Bloomberg’s calculation of Hagen’s fortune.

Physics Degree

Born near Oslo, Hagen earned a degree in physics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University. After a stint in management consulting, he entered the cruise industry in the 1970s. Around two decades later, following multiple failed attempts to help buy or otherwise take control over cruise lines with different investor groups, Hagen led the purchase of the four river ships and formed Viking.

The company initially focused on cruises along rivers up and down Europe before expanding into ocean travel and special expeditions to places like Antarctica and the US Great Lakes. Based in Bermuda, Viking today operates 92 vessels and employs more than 10,000 people.

Its target customers: affluent English speakers aged 55 or older, with time and money to explore the world. Last year, 90% of its clients came from North America, according to the company’s registration statement. In the US, the 55-plus cohort holds around three-quarters of the country’s household wealth, Federal Reserve  data  show.

In recent years, Viking has sold stakes to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and alternative-asset manager TPG Inc. Both offloaded more shares in the offering than initially anticipated, according to a  filing .

Hagen didn’t sell stock. His daughter, Karine, who has been working for Viking since it was founded and is now executive vice president, will control a small stake of less than 1%.

Viking said proceeds from the offering will be used to “increase our capitalization and financial flexibility” given its “substantial indebtedness.” It had $5.4 billion of debt at the end of 2023.

In a letter to shareholders included in the registration statement, Hagen noted the company sees big growth potential among consumers in China and elsewhere around Asia. That would go beyond “China Outbound,” the cruise offering in Europe with full crews of Mandarin speakers that Viking launched in 2016. The firm is also exploring safaris and land tours.

“We view Viking as the premier provider of travel experiences for thinking people,” the billionaire wrote in the letter. “We do not try to be all things to all people.”
