Our guests see manatees and dolphins all year long. We practice "passive observation" of the wildlife. We show you how to have an amazing encounter where the animal chooses to approach you. Our guests see manatees 99% of the time and dolphins almost as often. Let us help you make a memory you'll never forget.

.We do daily tours at Fort DeSoto and many other locations throughout Pinellas County . These places are typically calm and shallow waters with a lot of marine life to see, & of course dolphins & manatees. There are numerous mangrove islands as well as beautiful islands with white sandy beaches and great shelling. Between Dec & April, we also go to other locations where our kayak renters are very likely to see manatees. Dolphin can be seen at Fort DeSoto & Shell Key year round, however manatees are usually only in this area between May & November. Whatever the time of year, we have a very high success ratio of our renters seeing manatees and/or dolphins. 9 Best Places To Kayak With Manatees In Florida

August 16, 2021 //  by  Florida Trippers

Are you wondering where you can kayak with manatees in Florida? You have come to the right place. In this article, we will walk you through where to kayak with manatees and give you all the information you need.

Kayaking with manatees in Florida is such a special experience, one we feel everyone needs to have once in their life. All the places we have mentioned here allow you to do this safely and in no way endanger the animals.

Manatees are such lovely creatures also known as sea cows they are like giant friendly animals in the water. They are also are protected under the Endangered Species Act and under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

These protections were put in place when the numbers started to decline. In 1991 there was believed to be just over 1,200 and now there are approx 6,500. They are still a threatened species though so please be careful.

The best place to kayak with manatees in Florida is in the springs. The water tends to be clearer here so you can see them easier. In winter they move towards the springs so there is more of a concentration in one place.

The best time to see them tends to be from November to March peaking in December, January, and February.

While kayaking with manatees in Florida please don’t ever touch the manatees or interfere with them in any way. Just observe them from your kayak and be a passive observer of them. Do not feed them human food or chase them.

Manatees are intelligent animals and really friendly and curious so they might approach you if you are lucky. If they do just observe. Never kayak over a resting manatee and use shallow paddles so you keep your disturbance to a minimum.

So are you ready to learn where you can kayak with manatees in Florida? Here are the best manatee kayaking spots in Florida.

Manatee swimming in crystal river

Kayaking Crystal River

Crystal River has one of the largest populations of wild manatees in the world. If you want to kayak with manatees in Florida, Crystal River is a perfect day out and a great place to see these amazing creatures.

Just 90 minutes from Tampa it’s easy to get to and well served with amenities. You can hire kayaks here or go on a kayak tour. You can of course also bring your own kayak.

Crystal River is in Kings Bay Park and Three Sister Spring is accessible from the river. The water is refreshing and the scenery is luscious. This really is a beautiful area.

It is best to go as early as you can and on a weekday when the area is less busy. If the water is crowded with manatees you might find the location or parts of the location closed. Do not go into the closed areas they are there to protect the manatees.

Manatees flock here in the winter months for the warmer water of the springs. There are 70 springs in this 600-acre bay. It is believed as many as 800 manatees arrive here in the winter months.

During peak manatees months you can not kayak in the springs however you will see manatees in other areas. If you come just before they close the spring off you are likely to see some in the springs.

This is also one of the only places you can swim with manatees.

If you are looking into kayaking with manatees in Florida and are short on time this is the place to go.

Manatees in a spring at Crystal River from aerial viewpoint

Kayaking Manatee Park in Fort Myers

A warm-water refuge for the manatee when the Florida water gets too cold for them. The warm water in Manette park is not heated by a spring but by a power plant that discharges warm water.

Again the best time to see them is in December to February but they do hang around from November to March.

Some areas are closed to kayaks but you can spot them outside of these closed areas. The water isn’t clear here like a spring so they are a little more challenging to find.

The park is free to enter although parking does cost. You can rent a kayak or bring your own. You can also enjoy the butterfly garden, nature trail, and ethnobotany trail in the park.

The area around the canal where the manatees ‘hang out’ is off-limits with a fence. This area is always busy so kayak upstream a bit on the Orange River. Not only will it be more tranquil but you will get to see curious manatees by your boat.

A great spot close to Fort Myers .

A front of a blue kayak with a manatee swimming alongside in Fort Myers

Kayaking In Blue Springs Orlando

Blue Springs State Park was established after researchers tracked manatees swimming up from the St Johns River and it is a great place to kayak with manatees in Florida.

Swimming with the manatees is not permitted however by kayak you can easily see the manatees from a safe distance.

The water here is so clear and they are really easy to spot and as many as 500 have been known to frequent this area at peak season. In peak manatee season the spring is closed off to kayaks but you often will see them in St John’s River.

In the summer some manatees come to this area to birth and nurse their young calves so you may see one out of season.

A lot of research happens in Blue Springs and there is an under and over water webcam so you can spy on the manatees even when you are not there.

Kayaking At Silver Springs

Famous for its glass-bottom boats and used as a location in many a blockbuster kayaking with manatees in Florida doesn’t get better than at Silver Springs State Park!

Firstly you can actually hire glass-bottom tandem kayaks. Second, you have five miles of protected waterways here. Thirdly the water here is so clear.

In the winter the manatees will come into the spring area in the warmer months they will venture out to the river. You will know you are near one from ripples in the water or the trademark noise they make when they surface to breathe.

This park is one of the largest artesian springs in the world. There are lots to do here and while it can get busy it tends to not be quieter than some of the easier-to-reach spring locations in the state.

Three people kayaking with manatees in Silver Springs Florida

Kayaking At Manatee Springs State Park

Located in Chiefland , Florida it’s a first magnitude spring, and manatees love the warm water at the mouth of the springhead from the Suwanee River.

It opens at 8 a.m until sundown it costs $6 a vehicle. This state park has an 800-foot boardwalk that overlooks the springs so it’s also easy to see the manatees without even getting in the water.

The kayak launch area is near the northwest corner of the parking lot and you can rent a kayak if you don’t have one.

The springs are also home to 5 miles of underwater caves and are a popular scuba diving location. You will also find a picnic area, tables, grills, and pavilions.

The park also offers 8.5 miles of nature trails and a safe connection to the 32-mile Nature Coast State Trail. There is much more to do here than just kayak with manatees.

A great location to really make a day of it.

Kayaking In Lovers Key Fort Myers Beach

Despite having one of the loveseat beaches in Florida this island is a perfect place for kayaking with manatees. Manatees can be seen in the lagoons and canals surrounding the island if the water is at the right temperature.

While you can do a lot here bird watching and beachcombing to name a few we recommended you rent a kayak and enjoy the waters. The island is so secluded you can often hear the manatees communicating with each other before you actually see any.

Park rangers lead tours daily that last about three hours and this is the best way to know you are looking in the right direction. The guides will lead you to all the hotspots. Hopefully, you will see these amazing creatures playing, rolling around, and somersaulting.

You don’t have to go on a tour there is a kayak launch, use the boat ramp, but we feel it gives you the best chance of seeing manatees.

This place really is beautiful and don’t be surprised if you see a wedding taking place it’s a popular wedding location .

Aerial show of two people in an orange kayak with two manatees swimming around them

Kayaking At Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is home to the deepest freshwater cave system in the country and abundant protected wildlife, including manatees.

The springs and river that feed it are beautiful and with average water temperatures in the river of 72 F, you will often see manatees in the warm waters or the clear spring.

You can see manatees at any point on the river and springhead and look out for the darker areas of the river as there are some underground springs here which the manatees love.

When kayaking with manatees here head upstream as this is where you are most likely to find them. You can launch from the spa area or rent a kayak here.

A manatee swimming in Weeki Wachee spring in an article about where to kayak with manatees in Florida

Kayaking At Tarpon Springs

In Craig Park there is Spring Bayou it’s a freshwater spring that attracts manatees. The manatees are best seen here between December and March.

You can launch a kayak here along the southern bank of the Anclote River however we recommend if you can going on a tour in one of the completely clear kayaks.

Firstly completely clear kayaks need we say more but secondly, the manatees are less protected here so you don’t want to do anything to disturb them. Thirdly a local guide will have much more knowledge of where the manatees are preferring to hang out at the moment.

Only 45 minutes from Tampa this is a great spot to go if you are short on time. There are also lots of things to do in Tarpon Springs so you can totally make a day of it.

A Manatee swimming underwater

Kayaking At Ichetucknee Springs

Many think that the Ichetucknee River and Springs are some of the best kayaking in Florida. This area is just naturally beautiful and the blue-green water and lazy river are just so relaxing. It’s a real tropical paradise.

No one told the manatees though and while you can kayak with manatees here we can’t guarantee you will see one wherein some of the other locations you almost definitely will.

The river is fed by nine springs and the current is gentle making it great for tubing in the summer and kayaking in winter months where you might spot a manatee.

It’s a beautiful three-mile paddle from the northern to southern point. If you are patient and lucky you will see a manatee or two but don’t expect the numbers you get elsewhere.

Whether you see an elusive manatee or not you won’t be disappointed as the other wildlife is much easier to spot in the quieter winter months.

If you have never kayaked before this is a great place to start the water is crystal clear, there are no barriers along the way and the current is swift enough to carry you without scaring you.

Bring your own canoe or hire one. You will need to park in the southern part of the park and you will be shuttled to the northern starting point.

If you want to chance to see a manatee in a beautiful location then this is for you.

A Manatee up against a kayak in an article about kayaking with manatee Florida

As you can see there are many places to kayak with manatees in Florida. There is nothing like seeing these gentle giants in the wild.

Manette kayaking in a once in a lifetime experience, it is a special privilege that we hope you get to experience. Please come back and tell us all about it. We would love to know how kayaking with the manatees went for you.

What is the best time to see manatees in Florida?

They can be seen year-round in the state, but ideally, you want to look for them between November and March .

Manatees are large, slow-moving, but migratory marine mammals. They are cold-sensitive and prefer waters that are about 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. When the sea temperature drops in the Gulf of Mexico drops below this range, typically in the winter months, they migrate to warmer waters. As Florida has an extensive network of springs that stay around 72 degrees all year round, this makes the state a popular wintering spot for manatees.

The best time of day to spot them

The best time of day to see manatees is usually early in the morning, right after sunrise . This is the time when they are typically most active. During these hours, manatees are often grazing on seagrass beds, which makes them easier to spot.

Midday can also be a good time for viewing, particularly during the winter months, as manatees will often surface to warm themselves in the sun. However, the specific timing can vary based on the weather, the tide, and the location.

Mating season can be spectacular.

Manatee mating season typically runs from April through October , although it can sometimes extend outside these months. During this time, it is rare to see Manatees in Florida , but if you do spot them, it will likely be an entire “mating herd ”.

A mating herd is a group of manatees consisting of a single female, or cow, and multiple males, or bulls, that follow her around trying to mate. Mating herds can have a dozen or more males vying for the attention of one female, and the group can sometimes become quite animated and splash around, making for a spectacular sight.

Tips for swimming with manatees

Many of the places where you can see manatees also allow you to swim with them. However, with great joy comes great responsibility. Here are some tips to make the most out of this unique experience:

  • Book a Guided Tour : Consider attending a guided tour from a reputable operator who is familiar with the regulations and best practices for swimming with manatees.
  • Keep Your Distance : Always remember to keep a respectful distance from the manatees. Try not to approach them, but rather let them approach you if they are curious. Maintain at least six feet of distance to give them enough space to move freely.
  • No Touching or Feeding : The Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978 makes it illegal to disturb manatees in any way. Also don’t touch or feed them. If a manatee approaches you, resist the urge to reach out and touch it. Always keep your hands to yourself.
  • Observe Silently : Manatees are peaceful and slow-moving creatures. Sudden movements and loud noises can stress them. Therefore, move slowly and calmly in the water and avoid splashing.
  • Use Snorkeling Gear : Using snorkeling gear allows you to observe the manatees in their full glory. While under the water, they often strike fierce, charismatic poses that will make your day! While snorkeling, avoid diving or swimming under the manatees.
  • Don’t go near resting manatees : Manatees sometimes float motionless near the surface or on the bottom when they are resting. If you see a manatee in this state, do not disturb it.
  • Call 800-DIAL-FMP , if you see a dead, injured or harassed manatee.

Other places in Florida to see manatees

Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission made this detailed map that outlines the best places to see manatees in the wild or in captivity.

The mecca for manatee spotting is undoubtedly Crystal River, due to its vicinity to the Gulf of Mexico, spring-fed waters and ecotourism initiatives.

We also have guides on where to see manatees in the following locations:

  • West Palm Beach
  • The Everglades
  • Fort Lauderdale

1. Crystal River

Discover the wonders of the world’s largest wild manatee population in Crystal River, Florida. This 90-minute journey from Tampa is a must-see for anybody looking for personal contact with these gentle giants.

Due to its convenient location and many facilities, Florida has never been a better place to kayak with manatees.

Every winter, hundreds of manatees migrate to Crystal River in search of the warmth of the springs. With over 70 springs in the 600-acre bay, this site is a hotspot for manatee activity.

However, during peak manatee season, kayaking in the springs may be prohibited, but you will still get the chance to witness these amazing animals in other parts of the river.

Crystal River is one of the few places where you can actually swim with manatees! This makes it a great place for a special kayaking trip. So, if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind and spectacular time kayaking with manatees in Florida, go explore Crystal River.

2. Manatee Park

Step into the warm waters of Manatee Park, a haven for manatees during Florida’s winter months. This one-of-a-kind site is powered by a power plant that keeps the temperature just right for manatees to thrive.

The best time to see these gentle giants is from December to February, but you could see them in the park anytime between November and March.

Although certain portions of the park are not open to kayaking, you may still see manatees outside of these restricted areas.

You can also enjoy the park’s magnificent butterfly garden, nature walk, and ethnobotany trail in between kayaking sessions. Manatee Park is free to visit, although there is a minor parking cost.

Upstream on the Orange River, away from the popular area surrounded by a fence where manatees gather, you can kayak at your own pace. Not only will you be surrounded by tranquility, but as you paddle by, a manatee might look at you with an interested eye.

3. Manatee Springs

Manatee Springs in Florida

Visit Manatee Springs State Park near Chiefland, Florida, for a fantastic trip to see gorgeous manatees in their natural environment. This state park has a first-magnitude spring with water from the Suwannee River that is easy on marine life.

Here, you can experience a once-in-a-lifetime chance to kayak alongside manatees and see their joyous motions. You can rent a kayak at the park or bring your own with your favorite accessories and launch it from the parking lot’s northwest corner.

You can also appreciate the beauty of the manatees from the comfort of dry ground thanks to an 800-foot boardwalk overlooking the springs.

Aside from kayaking, Manatee Springs State Park has a plethora of other outdoor activities.

Moreover, you can explore the spectacular 5 miles of underwater caverns, have a picnic with family and friends in the park’s picnic area, or go for an awesome trek on the 8.5 miles of nature paths. The park also connects to the Nature Coast State Trail, which is 32 miles long.

4. Homosassa Springs

Have a memorable kayaking excursion on Homosassa Springs’ crystal-clear, spring-fed waterways. Keep a watch out for beautiful manatees and a broad assortment of wildlife, including birds such as ibis, herons, cormorants, and anhinga, as well as a tiny family of monkeys that live on Monkey Island.

This spot is on the Nature Coast Trail as well and is known for its family of manatees, places to watch birds, and ancient artifacts. It is located on the Gulf Coast, about 70 miles north of Tampa.

You’ll get the opportunity to explore the Chassahowitzka River (Chaz), Crystal River, and Rainbow River, all of which have beautiful clear waters and the possibility of seeing manatees.

You may also experience the best of both worlds by staying at the Florida Cracker Riverside Resort, which offers standard hotel rooms as well as riverside suites with complete kitchens. With direct access to the river from the resort, you can just walk outside and push off in your kayak.

There are several opportunities to explore and interact with nature at Wakulla Springs. There’s something for everyone, from kayaking and riverboat trips to hiking, camping, and fishing. And, since manatees live in the springs all year, you’re highly likely to have some great manatee encounters.

The finest place to watch manatees is near The Lodge at Wakulla Springs, beneath the diving tower. Swimming with manatees is not permitted in Wakulla Springs, though. But you can still immerse yourself in nature’s splendor at Wakulla.

6. Longboat Key

Set off on an exciting journey in the seas around Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island, which are situated near Sarasota, Florida. As you kayak through the quiet, shallow waters, you may get up close and personal with wonderful species such as manatees, dolphins, crabs, and seahorses.

Guided kayaking tours like the Happy Paddler Longboat Key Kayak Tour are both informative and experiential.

The tour operators will take you to the greatest animal-watching areas, including a stop at Longboat Pass Bridge, where you may swim, take a beach stroll, or just rest and take in the beauty of the Gulf and Bay crossing.

If you’re feeling more daring, they also provide sunset and mangrove kayak trips, as well as kayak fishing charters. They have top-notch kayak rentals and training for everyone, whether you’re a novice or an expert paddler.

Kayaking with manatees on Long Boat Key is an excellent way to spend a vacation in Florida while discovering the hidden beauty of the surrounding islands.

7. Blue Springs

It’s easy to see why Blue Springs State Park is one of the best places in Florida to kayak with manatees. This park began when researchers watched manatees move up the St. Johns River, which led to the creation of this park.

While swimming with manatees is not permitted, kayaking allows you to see them from a safe distance. Blue Springs’ water is incredibly transparent, making it easy to observe these gorgeous animals.

Up to 500 manatees have been seen in the region during peak season. The spring may be restricted to kayaks during these times, but you can still see them along the St. Johns River.

Some manatees come to the region in the summer to give birth and feed their young, so you could be fortunate enough to see one out of season!

You can learn more about manatees thanks to the abundance of research happening at Blue Springs. Also, you can view the manatees with the park’s underwater camera, if you would prefer to stay on land!

8. Tarpon Springs

aerial view of Howard Park

Take a bath in the warm waters of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and you’ll be treated to a one-of-a-kind animal encounter. Here, you can kayak through its magnificent bayous and get up close and personal with manatees, dolphins, stingrays, and other aquatic species.

If you forgot your inflatable kayak , rent a clear one so you’ll be able to see the manatees swimming right under you. See them as they ascend to the surface for a breath of air before plunging back down to the bottom.

Tarpon Springs is known not only for its amazing manatee population but also for its long history and beautiful Victorian-style mansions. Take a guided tour to learn not only the natural beauty of the region but also the history and architecture of Tarpon Springs.

This is the ideal spot for a fun-filled day and is just 45 minutes from Tampa. To get the most out of your visit to Tarpon Springs, book a trip with a recommended guide and paddle around its bayous near Craig Park.

9. Weeki Wachee Springs

manatees in Weeki Wachee Springs

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is a beautiful place in Florida where many people go kayaking with manatees. Here, you can immerse yourself in nature and watch different animals swimming in the river.

Remember to give these protected species their space and try not to bother them, especially when they are sleeping.

The calm river is surrounded by a thick canopy of palm, oak, and cypress trees, making kayaking there relaxing and beautiful. The river is ideal for novices since it provides an easy float that can be managed with little skill.

Launch costs are $6 if you bring your own kayak or $22 if you rent a single kayak, which includes life jackets and paddles.

Once done, you can enjoy the free shuttle trip back to the park after your paddle, and keep in mind that all rentals must be returned 2 hours after the start time.

10. Ichetucknee Springs

kayaking with manatees at Ichetucknee Springs

Ichetucknee Springs State Park is where eight natural springs come together. It is a popular place to kayak with manatees. You may use the park’s shuttle service and boat launch, as well as a nearby swimming hole and a series of caverns that you can see from the ocean.

The clear springs keep a stable temperature of 72°F all year, making it a great home for a wide variety of animals, including manatees, otters, and many bird species. Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rent on-site in case you need them.

Overall, Ichetucknee Springs State Park is a great place for people who love nature because it is a peaceful and beautiful place to get away from everyday life.

11. Ginnie Springs

clear blue water at Ginnie Springs

Last is Ginnie Springs. Florida’s hidden jewel! This spectacular natural spring is one of the most beautiful in the state, and if you haven’t had the opportunity to go yet, you should.

If you like the outdoors, Ginnie Springs is a haven for you! Whether you’re a kayaker, canoer, camper, or diver, this natural haven has something for everyone.

You’ll have everything you need for a day of adventure with gear rentals ranging from $8 to $30 for sports like snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing.

Ginnie Springs is a favorite weekend getaway for locals, and tourists from all over to tube down the Santa Fe River. Please keep in mind that the park is privately owned and that access needs a waiver.

Even though it may be a little tougher to see manatees at Ginnie Springs, they do sometimes come to hang out. So, come enjoy the peace and beauty of this hidden treasure!

When is the best time to see manatees in Florida?

Winter is the ideal season to watch manatees in Florida, especially from November to March.

During these months, the water temperature in the state can drop to 68 °F or lower, forcing manatees to hide in warm-water springs and power plant discharge canals. Because there are more manatees in a limited space, people may see them more easily.

However, keep in mind that manatees are a protected species, and it is forbidden to disturb or disrupt them in any way. The best way to enjoy these gentle giants in their natural habitat is to observe them from a safe distance.

How to kayak with manatees safely?

Here are some tips for kayaking with manatees safely:

  • Observe at a safe distance. Manatees are a protected species, and it is unlawful to disturb or disrupt them in any manner. To guarantee their protection, keep at least 2-3 yards away from them.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings . Manatees move slowly and might be difficult to notice, particularly in murky water. Keep an eye out for them and be alert to any signs of their presence, such as churning water or snouts breaching the surface.
  • Avoid loud noises. Manatees are sensitive to noise, and loud or unexpected sounds can startle them quickly. Keep your voice quiet and learn how to paddle correctly to prevent any unexpected movements or sounds.
  • Follow the rules. Follow any restrictions or regulations in place to protect manatees, such as designated viewing areas, speed limits if in a motor boat, and no-entry zones.
  • Support conservation efforts. Respect manatees and their environment by reporting any unlawful activity or disruptions to the relevant authorities.

By following these tips, you can kayak with manatees in a safe and respectful way, helping to protect these gentle giants for future generations to enjoy.

You’ll also want to make sure you are wearing the right clothing and especially good kayaking shoes.

Final Thoughts

Florida is an excellent place, especially for kayak and manatee lovers. Some of the best places for manatees to live are in this state, like the clear waters of Homosassa Springs and the beautiful scenery of the Crystal River.

Some of these places aren’t too far from Orlando so a trip to see the manatees pairs nicely with a Universal Studios trip.

Whether you’re an experienced kayaker or a novice, each of these 11 spots has something unique and special to offer that will leave you with a lifelong memory. So pack your kayak, pack a lunch, and go out to one of these awesome kayaking spots!

River Kayaking

Weeki wachee river.

The crystal-clear water of the spring-fed Weeki Wachee River will make you feel as if you’ve been transported to another world. While you can rent a kayak or paddle board at the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park for a 1.5 hour long kayaking adventure, you can also head a little further downstream to the Kayak Shack in Spring Hill which is right across the river from Rogers Park.

You can rent a single kayak or paddle board for $35, a tandem kayak for $51, or a canoe for $35. They only launch from 8 am-12 pm and you must be back by 5 pm. Keep in mind that exiting your kayak or paddle board to swim is discouraged because trampling on the bottom of the river can destroy the natural vegetation that is critical to the ecosystem. You can learn more about what you need to know about kayaking on the Weeki Wachee River here.

Downtown Tampa Kayaking

Want to kayak the Hillsborough River with the scenic Tampa skyline as your backdrop? Urban Kai is best known for stand up paddle (SUP) board rentals, but kayaking and Starship (Starboard’s huge, 8-seater inflatable SUP) rentals are also available.

What makes Urban Kai kayaking unique is they offer kayak rentals at their Tampa and St. Pete locations as well as the option to bring kayak equipment to a designated location for you for a delivery fee. Hop into a tandem kayak with your love for $45 for a two-hour rental, which is plenty of kayak time to explore.

Other options for kayaking the downtown waterways include Tampa Bay SUP ($55 for two hours; tandem kayak) and WhatSUP Paddle Sports ($55 for two hours; tandem kayak).

Little Manatee River Kayak Tour

Located 30 minutes from downtown Tampa, Canoe Outpost – Little Manatee River offers multiple kayaking adventures at various levels of difficulty. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned kayaker, you’ll enjoy paddling out and back, or embarking on a longer journey with a return trip by shuttle bus.

For something out of the ordinary, reserve your spot on one of the monthly moonlight kayak paddle tours which includes a stop for snacks and music around a campfire (yes, there are s’mores!) for $95. Reservations for kayak rentals are recommended, but not required. Tandem kayak rental rates depend on the specific self-guided trip you choose but are all between $49-$79.

Gulf and Bay Kayaking

Shell key preserve.

Manatees, dolphins, starfish and birds, oh my! Multiple kayak tour companies, including Coastal Kayak Charters , offer guided kayaking tours exploring the serene Shell Key Preserve near Tampa Bay and St. Pete.

Depending on the tide, you may be able to paddle through mangrove tunnels. If you’re lucky, you may have a dolphin swim near your kayak, a once in a lifetime experience (and so romantic!). The cost for this tour is $54/person.

Honeymoon Island/Caladesi Island

Boasting natural beaches, stunning sunsets, top-notch shelling and more, Honeymoon Island State Park is an unspoiled paradise just minutes from hip downtown Dunedin. Cross the Dunedin Causeway, pay the $8 park entry fee and access is yours.

While lazing on the beach and exploring the hiking trails are popular park activities, kayak rentals are also available at the park concession or you can bring your own kayak.

honeymoon island

Alternatively, you can rent a tandem kayak outside the park from Sail Honeymoon. Set your sights on scenic Caladesi Island for a secluded beach day. Splurge on the full day kayak rental so you can explore at your leisure. Tandem kayaks start at $45 for two hours.

Lido Key Kayaking

Lido Key may be a bit of a trek from Tampa, but the drive is worth the reward of paddling through scenic mangrove tunnels. Pack a plastic bag for your phone because you’ll definitely want to snap some photos while exploring.

Rentals are available from several companies, including Sea Life Kayak Adventures ($67 for a half-day tandem kayak). While guided tours are available for $59/person, the tunnels are surprisingly simple to navigate and the current will help you along. Beginners up for a bit of adventure can totally tackle this experience. Your kayak rental company should also offer a map to help you get oriented.

Tarpon Springs

For kayakers who want a leisurely trip paired with manatee sightings, a manatee tour kayak trip is the way to go. Get Up and Go Kayaking offers guided kayak tours in tandem clear kayaks for $49/person, giving you an unobstructed view of any manatees you’re lucky enough to spot.

Once you paddle out to the manatee hangout, you’ll have plenty of time to sit back in your kayak, relax, and wait for the gentle giants to pop up and say hello. When I did this tour, a manatee popped up right in front of my kayak!

Stick around the area after your kayak tour for a visit to the touristy but fun Tarpon Springs. The area is most famous for sponges and you’ll find them everywhere, along with an abundance of tasty Greek eateries. Tours last about 2.5 hours. Note: this tour is only offered during manatee season in the colder months of December through March.
