There are over 80 national parks in India, spread all over the country. Some are larger and more accessible then others. These parks are all popular with visitors, and offer a diverse variety of flora and fauna.

Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

India's first national park, Corbett was established in 1936 by legendary tiger hunter Jim Corbett. It's located around three hours from Nainital and seven hours from Delhi. The park is a large one and has five zones. One zone, Jhirna, is open all year round. The rest of the park closes during the monsoon. The chances of seeing a tiger at Corbett aren't great but there are other animals, and elephant safaris are possible. For the best wildlife viewing, stay deep in the reserve in the Dhikala zone. However, if you're a foreigner be prepared to pay double the rates for accommodation, with the cheapest rates around 2,500 rupees a night for a private cabin at a forest rest house. Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

Ranthambore is a fascinating blend of history and nature. Inside the park is a formidable fort that was built in the 10th century and coveted by many rulers due to its strategic position between north and central India. The park itself is characterized by rocky plains and steep cliffs. It supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including around 30 tigers. This park is very popular due to its proximity to Delhi and the fact that tigers are relatively easy to spot there. However, the park's popularity has resulted in overcrowding and mismanagement of safaris, which is a problem and something to be aware of.

Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Kanha National Park has the honor of providing the setting for Rudyard Kipling's classic novel, The Jungle Book . It's rich in lush saal and bamboo forests, lakes, streams and open grasslands. This large park is well regarded for its research and conservation programs, and many endangered species have been saved there. As well as tigers (the chance of seeing one has increased dramatically in recent years), the park is known for its barasingha (swamp deer) and an extensive variety of other animals and birds. It's perfect for nature lovers.

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Pench National Park gets its name from the river that runs through it, dividing it into east and west halves. Like Kanha National Park, Pench is also associated with Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book." A place of wild natural beauty, it has open hilly terrain, teak forests and thick vegetation. This well-managed park is renowned for river rafting and is a great place for bird watching. Tiger sightings are quite common on safari, along with many other animals. An additional attraction is the potters' village that's situated near the park's Turiya gate.

Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Bandhavgarh is best known for its spectacular setting, as well as having the highest concentration of tigers in any park in India. The park features dense green valleys and rocky hill terrain, with an ancient fort built on 800 meter (2,624 ft) high cliffs. Although it's relatively difficult to reach, this park offers among the best chance of seeing tigers.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Much of Kaziranga National Park consists of swamp and grasslands, making it the perfect habitat for the one-horned rhinoceros. The largest population in the world of these prehistoric looking creatures exists there, along with almost 40 major mammals. This picturesque park can be explored by elephant safari. It sits on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in India's Northeast, approximately six hours from Guwahati.

Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

Sundarbans, one of the top tourist places in West Bengal , has a magnificent tangle of mangrove jungle that's the largest in the world.. The Indian part is made up of 102 islands and just over half of them are inhabited. The Sundarbans is only accessible by boat and exploring it this way is a thrilling experience that shouldn't be missed. Don't be hopeful of seeing any tigers though. They're very shy and usually remain well hidden in the reserve. A highlight is staying in eco-friendly village accommodations and enjoying community-based tourism.

Valley of Flowers National Park, Uttarakhand

This high altitude alpine valley is a glacial corridor that comes alive during the monsoon season with around 300 different varieties of alpine flowers. They appear as a bright carpet of color against a mountainous snow capped background. Bandipur National Park, Karnataka

One of the most famous national parks in south India, Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve . It was once the the private hunting ground of the maharajas of Mysore. This substantial 870 square kilometer park receives a lot of tourists as its located on the way to Ooty from Mysore. It does have tigers, although they're rarely sighted.  You're more likely to see deer and monkeys on safari (and maybe elephants if you're lucky).

Nagahole National Park, Karnataka

Nagahole is officially known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park and it's also part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Kabini River runs between Bandipur and Nagahole, and it's not unusual to see herds of elephants on the river bank. The Kabini side of Nagarhole has some outstanding luxury safari lodges.

Mudumalai National Park, Tamil Nadu

Mudumalai National Park , not far from Ooty in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, shares its border with Kerala and Karnataka. More than 260 species of birds (including peacocks) are reportedly found there, as well as elephants, tigers, deer, monkeys, wild boar, bison, and leopards. The Ultimate Guide to National Parks in India

Corbett: India’s oldest national park

Named after the famous author and hunter turned conservationist – Jim Corbett, the Corbett National Park was the first in India to come under the fold of Project Tiger initiative.

The landscape is dramatically diverse, the Himalayan foothills loom large on the horizon, the river Ramganga flows through the park, and a jungle safari transports you from amber tinted tall grasslands to dense foliage in no time. A treasure trove for bird enthusiasts, one can spend hours trying to recognise the chirping, the forests here are always ‘alive with the sound of music.’

From mid-October to mid-June. There are defined eco tourism zones within the forest. Durga Devi and Bijrani zone can be visited from mid-October to mid-June, and Dhikala zone can be visited from mid-November to mid-June. Jhirna and Dhela zones are open through the year.[/tab]

Pench: The legend of Mowgli

The forests of Pench are said to have inspired the much loved ‘The Jungle Book’. In the year 1831, a wolf child was found in these jungles and the accounts published spurred Sir Rudyard Kipling’s imagination. It is believed he travelled to these jungles as well.

The forest cover in Pench National Park is not too dense with a mix of dry deciduous forests, shrubs and grassy patches. It is interspersed with striking Kulu trees, their silvery white trunks lending a ghostly appearance. A tiger reserve was established in 1992, and the national animal of India is frequently spotted. The forest is also home to leopards, sloth bears, wolves, hyenas, wild dogs and deer amongst others. Several migratory birds visit the forest too and can be spotted around the water bodies.

Gir: For the Asiatic lion

Located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat, the Gir Forest National Park is your choice for watching an Asiatic lion in the wild.

The conservation efforts here started as early as 1900 when the lion population had dwindled down to 20. Kaziranga: Bastion of the One-horned Rhinoceros

Spread over the flood plains of India’s largest river, the Brahmaputra, Kaziranga has been recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site. The mighty river lends a distinct character to the topography – a mix of grasslands, marshy patches, and tropical forests.

Once a game sanctuary, Kaziranga has been the centre of intensive conservation efforts to save the One-horned Rhinoceros from the brink of extinction. Hemis: For the elusive snow leopard

If adapting to cold is not a deterrent for you, trekking in the Hemis High Altitude National Park in Ladakh promises a wildlife experience like no other.

While the density of snow leopards is high, chances of encountering the ‘grey ghost’ are low as the animal is shy and gets camouflaged in the high rugged snow clad cliffs. The region also serves as a natural habitat for the Ladakhi Urial, the Asiatic Ibex, and the Tibetan Wolf. Situated north of the Himalayas, the region houses the 400-year-old Tibetan Buddhist Hemis monastery.

Ranthambore: Home of many legendary Bengal tigers

Among India’s more famous national parks, Ranthambore is known for its dry deciduous habitat. Located in the state of Rajasthan, the forest has been home to many legendary tigers, including Machali, who was believed to be world’s oldest and most photographed Bengal tigress at the time of her death in 2016.

Inside the park area, is the imposing 700 feet high Ranthambore fort. One can also visit ancient Hindu and Jain temples. A banyan tree, believed to be second largest in India, can be seen near Padma Talao, the biggest lake in the park. Nagarhole: Along the misty backwaters of Kabini river

A former hunting ground of the Mysore royalty, Nagarhole (also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park) is located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka.

It is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot. An early morning boat ride on the Kabini backwaters is a unique experience; the sky is flushed pink, and a blanket of mist settles on the tranquil waters. You may be able to watch tigers, leopards, wild elephants or deer on the banks. Local villagers also rely on these backwaters for their commute and can be seen moving around in basket-shaped round coracle boats. Chances of bird sighting are aplenty — you can see ospreys, serpent eagles, orioles, and kingfisher.

1. Corbett National Park

Corbett National Park is home to multitudinous species of vegetations, birds, and animals. Named after the famous author and hunter turned conservationist – Jim Corbett , the Corbett National Park was the first in India to come beneath the fold of mission Tiger initiative . The landscape is dramatically diverse, the river Ramganga flows through the park, the Himalayan foothills loom large on the horizon, and a jungle safari transports you from amber tinted tall grasslands to dense foliage in just no time. A treasure trove for fowl fanatics , one can spend hours trying to recognize the chirping , the forests right here are constantly alive with some natural tunes .

2. Pench National Park

Pench — The Legend of Mowgli.  The forests of Pench are stated to have inspired the much cherished ‘ The Jungle Book ’. In the year 1831, a wolf child was found in these jungles and the accounts published spurred Sir Rudyard Kipling’s imagination. it is believed that he traveled to these jungles as well. The forest cover in Pench National Park is not much dense with a blend of dry deciduous forests , shrubs and grassy patches . it's far interspersed with striking Kulu trees , their silvery white trunks impart a ghostly appearance . A tiger reserve was set up in 1992 , and the national animal of India is frequently spotted. The forest is also home to sloth bears , leopards , wolves , wild dogs , hyenas , and deer amongst others. several migratory birds visit the forest too and can be noticed by the water bodies.

7. Sundarbans National Park

A part of the Sunderbans on the Ganges Delta , Sunderbans is a National Park , Tiger Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve . it is thickly blanketed by Mangrove forests and is one amongst the largest reserves for the Bengal Tiger . Home to a selection of birds , reptiles , and the saltwater crocodile , the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve was created in 1973 and declared a Reserve forest in 1978 , a National Park in 1984 , a World Heritage Site in 1997 and the entire Sunderbans area declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1989 . Aside from the Royal Bengal Tiger , Leopards , Fishing Cats , Wild Boars , Indian grey Mongoose , Macaques , Chital are also found in abundance within the Sunderbans.

8. Bandhavgarh National Park
