Bass and crappie are the primary target species on most of my trips.

Lake of the Ozarks Fishing Trips

client and bass

Thank you for your interest in my guided fishing trips on Lake of the Ozarks!

I primarily guide for bass and crappie, plus blue catfish in the summer. Lake of the Ozarks is a great lake for these species, but due to heavy pressure and the abundance of subtle structure in the lake, these fish aren't easy. Let me take the guesswork out of fishing the lake. Whether you're an avid fisherman with your own boat and gear who's looking to fish with me for a full day or several days to increase your knowledge of the lake or a first-timer eager to go catch your first fish on a four-hour trip, I'd love to take you fishing.

I've been fishing Lake of the Ozarks since the late 1980s, since I was a little kid. I started running guided fishing trips in 2003, and now spend at least 225 days a year fishing and guiding on Lake of the Ozarks, and usually many more. Unlike some of the other fishing guides on Lake of the Ozarks, my guide service is my sole occupation, so I am out there on the lake rain or shine. I've got a ton of semi-secret spots and plenty of tips and tricks that not many other guides know about. I'd love to show you some of these spots and tricks.

While bass, crappie, and catfish are my main quarries, I'm a true multi-species guide. In the fall when the wind is blowing I love to guide for white bass and hybrid stripers, and in the summer I'm one of only a few guides in the country who target longnose gar. Many people are doubtful when I suggest chasing gar, but I've made believers out of almost every client who has tried it. It's easy to switch from one species to another if one type of fish isn't biting or we want to switch it up. Because I know how to target all of the major gamefish in Lake of the Ozarks, it's almost certain at least one species will be biting well when you're here.

My Lake of the Ozarks fishing trips take place primarily in the Osage Beach, Lake Ozark, Linn Creek, Camdenton, and Laurie areas of the lake, from mile marker 45 down to Bagnell Dam. I occasionally run trips on the Niangua, upper Osage, Gravois, or Grand Glaize arms of the lake upon request or if the fishing is really hot in one of these areas. I run all of my Lake of the Ozarks trips in my 21-foot Nitro Z9 Bass Boat. This boat has plenty of room and handles the big waves common in Lake of the Ozarks much better than a smaller boat.

Special note to fly anglers: Lake of the Ozarks isn't a great place to fly fish, but some opportunities exist for crappie, panfish, gar, and bass. Fishing for gar and bass in the summer are particularly good options. While I don't fly fish much on the Lake of the Ozarks myself, I am familiar enough with it and have guided enough fly fishers that I can tailor a trip for you as long as you're flexible and fairly skilled. Please read this article or contact me for more details if you'd like to fly fish, since there are some differences in what my trips include for fly fishers versus for conventional gear anglers.

The posted rates are for one or two people. I may be able to line up additional guides if you have a larger group, and on occasion I can take a third person in one boat for an additional fee. Read on past the rates and policies if you are curious about guided trips I offer to destinations other than Lake of the Ozarks, or if you have a large or corporate group.

Trip Lengths, Rates, and Policies

Trip lengths and rates.

4-Hour Trip----------------$400

6-Hour Trip----------------$600

8-Hour Trip----------------$800

I offer four-hour half-day trips, six-hour 3/4-day trips, and eight-hour full-day trips. In the summer, I often run evening four-hour trips. If you're interested in chasing a variety of fish species or learning several techniques, the longer trips are better. Generally my 6-hour fishing trips on Lake of the Ozarks are the most popular trips I offer. These are great options if you have other plans during the day but still want to get out on the water. Rates are the same whether we fish Lake of the Ozarks or take a trip to one of my secondary guide trip locations discussed further down this page. For information on what's included in these rates, see the what's included section .

As you've probably already noticed, my rates are given in the list to the right. I accept cash, personal checks, and major credit cards. I accept credit card payments through Paypal or by swiping your card with a phone app, provided I have a signal. If you would like to pre-pay for your trip via Paypal, click the button below the trip that interests you.

Deposit and Cancellation Policy

My deposit policy is as follows : I require a $50 deposit per trip to confirm the booking and hold the date. You can mail me a check or use the Paypal button to your right to pay this deposit. This deposit is refundable no questions asked more than 14 days before the trip and will be refunded between 14 days and 48 hours before the trip if I am able to rebook. You can also pre-pay for the entire trip if that's easier (see the buttons above). I require full payment for trips cancelled within 48 hours and for "no-shows." This is simply to protect myself since it's almost impossible for me to rebook a trip cancelled within two days.

I almost never cancel trips due to inclement weather. You should be prepared to fish regardless of weather. The only weather conditions that might cause a cancellation are thunderstorms forecast to last all day and sustained winds over 30mph that are forecast to continue. More commonly, inclement weather will lead to short delays in getting started or to me picking a fishing spot that's somewhat protected from the weather. Ice or extreme cold (below 20 degrees) might also lead to weather cancellations, but these are exceedingly rare situations that happen less than once per season.

Keeping Fish

Some of the fish I target on my guided trips are prolific, but many are not. Generally speaking, I suggest practicing catch and release on largemouth and smallmouth bass as well as catfish over two feet in length, though if you catch a trophy bass you intend to mount, that's a different story. A few small spotted (or Kentucky) bass may be kept. You may keep other species within the legal limits if you want to. Crappie are the main fish my clients keep. There will be a small additional fee for fish cleaning. Please ask for details if you would like to keep some.

What's Included and What Isn't

I include the following: rods and reels ready to fish, all necessary lures and terminal tackle, bait when we're fishing for catfish, bottled water, and all required boating items like a net, fuel, life jackets, etc. If there's a very young child in your group, you may need to bring a life jacket for him or her.

You should plan to bring: personal fishing licenses ( purchase online here ) raingear, a hat, polarized sunglasses (it is VERY important you have polarized sunglasses) , extra clothing, sunscreen, a camera, drinks besides water, snacks, and live bait (if you choose to use bait). You can also bring one or two of your own rods and reels if you have favorites as well as a few favorite lures. Let me know what kind of tackle and lures you have when you book and I'll let you know if they're appropriate for fishing Lake of the Ozarks. There's no need to bring a ton of tackle, big tackle boxes, or large backpacks. My boat has plenty of dry storage to hold everything you bring provided you don't go overboard with tackle boxes, tons of extra clothes, etc. Make sure to bring raingear and a spare layer or two.

Guided Fishing Trips to Other Bodies of Water

Are you looking for a change of pace? Are you interested in getting away from the heavy boat traffic on Lake of the Ozarks? Are you interested in a river bass fishing experience? If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, perhaps a trip to one of the other locations where I guide makes sense for you. While Lake of the Ozarks guided fishing trips will always be the core of my business, I also guide on several other nearby rivers and lakes when conditions or the interests of my clients warrant it.

The Osage River downstream of Bagnell Dam seasonally offers great bass fishing, as well as some chances at white bass and hybrid stripers, without the crowds above the dam. Some surprisingly large bass come from this section of river. Since Bagnell Dam is nearby, it's possible to split your day between Lake of the Ozarks and the Osage. I run trips on the Osage in my Nitro bass boat.

Niangua Lake is a small reservoir on the Niangua River, a small Ozark River that feeds into Lake of the Ozarks. This small reservoir has a horsepower limit, so I guide this water from a small jon boat. Spotty but occasionally fantastic bass and crappie fishing await on this lake, and it's never crowded.

Corporate and Large Group Trips

Are you having a family reunion or corporate retreat at the lake? If so, why not add some fishing? As long as I have sufficient notice, I can contract with other Lake of the Ozarks fishing guides to set up an outing for as many as twenty people, with two anglers per guide.

My contract guides and I will do everything we can to make these trips fun for everyone, no matter how much fishing experience each client has. Usually I run large group fishing trips like miniature, goofy tournaments, with awards for the biggest fish, the biggest stringer, and oddball categories like ugliest and smallest fish.

Since these trips involve a lot more work than my usual single-boat trips, I charge an additional fee of $100 to set up multi-boat trips. When you book a large group fishing trip on Lake of the Ozarks, I will need a fairly accurate estimate of the number of people involved 14 days in advance to get the guides lined up. 5 days in advance the number of clients needs to be locked in. Total guide fees will be based on this number, even if fewer people decide to fish on the day of the trip.

Lake of the Ozarks Fishing

Lake of the Ozarks is one of the best fishing lakes not only in the midwest but the entire country. The lake is over 92 miles long and has a surface area of more than 54,000 acres.  All 92 miles of the lake are home to world class bass, crappie, and catfish. There is not a bad time to fish at Lake of the Ozarks. No matter what season it is and regardless of weather there are always fish biting somewhere. Let Casey show you how to locate and catch fish at Lake of the Ozarks.

Spring -  Spring fishing at the lake can be incredible. This is the time of year to catch a trophy and possibly the biggest bass of your life. The average size of fish is usually better in the spring than any other time of year. The fish will begin to  stage up in early spring in preparation for the spawn. These fish will move daily and a good guide can be helpful in staying with them as they move and prepare for the spawn. Jerk baits, crank baits, soft plastics, and jigs are all very effective at times. This is the best time of year to crappie fish.

Summer - Summer fishing is fantastic at the Lake of the Ozarks. There are a tremendous amount of fish both shallow and deep at this time of year. Proper electronics can be very important to locating fish at this time. This is a great time of year to catch numbers of fish and quality. A wide variety of lures work at his time of year, Topwaters,  crankbaits, jigs, plastic worms, and creature baits are all very effective. Night fishing can be phenomenal at this time. Recreational boat traffic can be heavy this time of year especially on weekends. It is important to get out early in the morning or in the evenings. Four hour trips are recommended on the weekends.

Fall - Fall is my favorite times to fish at Lake of the Ozarks.  During this time the fish become spread out and can be caught at a wide variety of depths using many techniques. The fish change daily and discovering an effective pattern is important. This is a great time to learn new techniques because the fish are doing a little bit of everything. Numbers of fish are very good in the fall and big fish are very common as well. Jigs, topwater, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits excel this time of year.

Winter - Winter fishing is usually amazing and most days you have the lake all to yourself. Winter is an excellent time to catch a big fish. The fish are feeding heavily at this time and the average size of fish is better than at any other time.  Jerkbaits, Alabama rigs, and jigs are all you need. The crappies also begin to group up and can be caught easily most days.

Thanks for the great fishing last week, you made it fun..With covid still in play i had forgotten what a great guided fishing trip was like, since that s*** had cut my trips by 75%... I had also forgotten what a 100 + day was like and the way it make my arm hurt..

Sharing is caring!

Fly fishing in the Ozarks is a true angler’s paradise, offering a diverse array of opportunities for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts. This region, spanning across southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, is renowned for its picturesque rivers and streams, flourishing with a variety of fish species including smallmouth bass, brown trout, and wild rainbow trout. The unique combination of warm and cold water habitats makes the Ozarks a perfect destination for those seeking a one-of-a-kind fly fishing experience.

One of the most notable features of the Ozarks is the North Fork of the White River, which begins as a smallmouth bass haven before transforming into a thriving trout fishery at the cold waters of Rainbow Spring. Floating and camping are popular ways to explore this wilderness river and immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the region. Additionally, anglers can enjoy guided fly fishing trips on several other rivers and creeks in the area, such as the famed Buffalo National River and Dry Run Creek for those under 16.

Fly Fishing Basics in the Ozarks

Choosing the Right Gear

When fly fishing in the Ozarks, you’ll need to carefully select your gear. Opt for a medium to fast action fly rod in the 8’6″ to 9′ range, with a 5-7 weight . Pair your rod with a quality reel that has a smooth drag system capable of holding at least 100 yards of backing. A floating line is also important for effectively presenting your flies.

In addition to your rod, reel, and line, don’t forget about other essentials like waders, polarized sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection.

Common Fly Fishing Techniques

When fly fishing in the Ozarks, there are a few key techniques to employ:

  • Dry fly fishing: Cast your fly upstream and let it drift naturally with the current. Be ready to set the hook as soon as the fish takes the fly.
  • Nymph fishing: Use weighted nymphs and an indicator to help locate fish in deeper waters.
  • Streamer fishing: Cast your streamer across the current and use a variety of retrieves to mimic baitfish behavior.

Practice your casting and presentation skills before hitting the water to increase your chances of success on the river.

Fly Tying and Patterns

Fly tying is an integral aspect of fly fishing in the Ozarks, as local patterns often outperform store-bought options. Some popular patterns in the region include:

  • Clouser Minnow: An excellent pattern for smallmouth bass, this streamer is tied with various materials and colors to imitate local baitfish.
  • Ozark Sowbug: A popular nymph pattern that effectively imitates the abundant sowbugs found in Ozarks streams.
  • Foam Hoppers: Topwater flies that mimic grasshoppers are deadly during terrestrial insect hatches.

Utilizing some of these proven patterns along with local advice will help ensure a successful day on the water. Joining fly tiers clubs or learning from experienced anglers can improve your fly tying skills and give you an edge in the Ozarks.

In the Ozarks, both trout and smallmouth bass are targeted by fly anglers. By having the right gear, mastering essential techniques, and tying effective patterns, you’ll be well on your way to a memorable fly fishing experience in this beautiful region.

Fish Species and Techniques

In the Ozarks, fly fishers can find a variety of fish species, but some of the most sought-after targets include brown trout, rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass. Each species requires different techniques and strategies to catch them.

Catching Brown Trout

Brown trout are often found in the colder waters of the Ozarks, such as the North Fork of the White River. They mainly feed on smaller fish, insects, and crustaceans. Fly fishers targeting brown trout should use a variety of nymph patterns, like the Zebra Midge , to mimic the aquatic insects these fish feed on. Another effective technique is using a streamer, such as the Woolly Bugger, to imitate smaller fish.

To catch brown trout, use the following techniques and patterns:

  • Nymph fishing: Zebra Midge, Hare’s Ear
  • Streamer fishing: Woolly Bugger, Leech patterns

Pursuing Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are also common in the Ozarks and can be found in the same waters as brown trout, often near the cold Rainbow Spring. These fish feed on insects, such as caddis, as well as smaller fish. Fly fishing techniques for rainbow trout usually involve using dry flies to imitate the caddis and other insects they’re feeding on.

Some popular patterns and techniques for catching rainbow trout include:

  • Dry fly fishing: Elk Hair Caddis, Adams
  • Nymph fishing: Pheasant Tail, Copper John
  • Streamer fishing: Woolly Bugger, Muddler Minnow

Targeting Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass are abundant in the warmer sections of the Ozarks rivers, making them a popular target for fly fishers. These aggressive fish are known to feed on crayfish and smaller fish. It’s important to choose flies that mimic these prey, such as the Nearnuff Crayfish pattern for crayfish imitation. Using streamer patterns can be effective when trying to imitate small baitfish.

Here are some useful techniques and patterns for targeting smallmouth bass in the Ozarks:

  • Streamer fishing: Zonker, Clouser Minnow
  • Topwater fishing: Foam poppers, Gurglers
  • Crayfish imitations: Nearnuff Crayfish, Whitlock’s NearNuff Sculpin

Overall, knowing the proper techniques and patterns for your target fish species is essential for a successful fly fishing experience in the Ozarks.

Trout Fishing Regulations and Designations

Understanding fishing regulations.

Trout fishing in the Ozarks is regulated by the Missouri Department of Conservation to ensure the sustainability of the fish populations and protect the overall health of the river ecosystem. The fishing regulations vary depending on the type, and location of the trout fisheries. Usually, these regulations define the legal fish size, catch limits, and type of tackle allowed.

In southern Missouri, there are three types of trout fisheries, categorized as Blue Ribbon, Red Ribbon, and White Ribbon areas. These designations indicate the quality of the fisheries, size limits of fish that can be caught, and specific regulations that apply to that stream.

Navigating Designated Trout Fisheries

Blue Ribbon Trout Areas:

These areas represent the highest quality trout habitats and support healthy populations of wild trout. Missouri Department of Conservation focuses on managing these areas for larger fish sizes. Regulations for these areas include:

  • An 18-inch minimum length limit
  • A daily limit of one trout
  • Only flies and artificial lures are allowed, no natural or organic bait

Red Ribbon Trout Areas:

Red Ribbon areas are managed for quality fishing opportunities that provide larger trout sizes. These areas have the following regulations:

  • A 15-inch minimum length limit
  • A daily limit of two trout
  • No bait restrictions

White Ribbon Trout Areas:

White Ribbon areas are focused on providing quality trout fishing opportunities to a larger number of anglers with fewer restrictions. These areas have the following regulations:

  • A 12-inch minimum length limit
  • A daily limit of four trout

It is essential for anglers to follow the regulations set forth by the Missouri Department of Conservation to ensure responsible and sustainable trout fishing in the Ozarks. Before heading out to fish, always be familiar with the regulations pertaining to the specific area you plan to fish, such as the Barren Fork , as they may vary or be updated over time.

In the Ozarks, fly fishermen have a variety of lodging options to choose from. One popular choice is the Copper John’s Resort , which offers world-class fishing and spacious cabin rentals. Additionally, they provide 50 RV site hookups for those who prefer a more mobile experience.

Another lodging option is the River of Life Farm , which provides a selection of accommodations for parties ranging from 1 to 14 guests. They offer diverse choices like log cabins and camping sites, making it an ideal choice for a fishing getaway on the Norfork Tailwater.

Camping and Floating Options

For those who enjoy camping and floating, the Ozarks offers various opportunities to combine fly fishing with an outdoor adventure. Camping spots are available along the riverbanks of popular fishing destinations like Blue Springs Creek, which is known for its clear water and healthy trout population.

For a unique fly fishing experience, consider exploring the Ozarks through a floating trip. Dally’s Ozark Fly Fisher offers guided fly fishing trips that include river boats and drift boats on the world-famous Buffalo National River, the White River, and Norfork Tailwater.

Ozark Fishing Adventures - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Driftwood Outdoors: Lake of the Ozarks delivers new world-record paddlefish

Nathan "Shags" McLeod holds his paddlefish with Brandon Butler and guide Jason Smith.

We have dinosaurs swimming in the Midwest.

Paddlefish fossils date from 65 million years ago. They’re native to North America and once flourished in the Mississippi and Missouri watersheds. Today, they are doing well in many areas and are a popular game fish. One such destination is Lake of the Ozarks, where the world-record paddlefish was snagged this spring.

Lake of the Ozarks has an abundance of prehistoric paddlefish, as does neighboring Truman Lake. Each spring anglers pursue them with snagging equipment.  Numerous guide services offer paddlefish trips.

One lucky group of anglers picked the right guide the day they hired Jason Smith. They never imagined they would break a world record that day, but that’s exactly what happened when they boated a massive 164-pound, 13-ounce paddlefish.

Smith, the owner and operator of Smith’s Fishing Adventures, was trolling for paddlefish. This means he was dragging lines affixed with treble hooks and a large sinker to a heavy braided line behind the slowly moving boat. When the rod went down, the group told Chad Williams to grab it. After all, he’d never caught a paddlefish before. This was his first time ever on a snagging expedition.

Nathan “Shags” McLeod, co-host of the Driftwood Outdoors Podcast, and I were invited to join Smith on a snagging trip a couple weeks later to see if we could put a couple in the boat and record a conversation about catching the world record for the podcast. Hearing him tell the story in person, about how this guy — who didn’t even know what a paddlefish was — caught the world record on his first fish was a ton of fun. He said Williams was super humble about the experience.

Smith showed me and Shags the exact spot where the record was caught. You can tell he’s proud of the accomplishment coming on one of his guide trips, but he’s also playing it pretty cool. The guide and the angler in this story both add to the feel-good aspect of this inexperienced angler landing the fish of a million lifetimes.

Smith did express he is proud to have brought the record back to Missouri, where it had once been, before Oklahoma broke it numerous times. The record was certified by MDC officials.

Shags knew what a paddlefish was, but also had never caught one when we stepped into Smith’s boat. The thought — could it happen again? — ran through both of our minds. Could there be a 165-pounder out there waiting for us?

Likely there is, but we didn’t run into it that evening. Shags did boat his first paddlefish, on what was called out to be his last cast of the day.

The wildest part of this trip was using LiveScope. This is super-advanced fish-finding technology. You watch a screen and see fish in real time, and can use horizontal and vertical axes to calculate how far away from the boat the fish is — and how deep. This determines the angle of your cast.

See kids, geometry is used after you graduate. Who would have thought on a paddlefishing trip? It very much has a video game feel to it, and I feel kind of guilty for liking it.

Lake of the Ozarks is such a crazy place, in all the best ways. There is so much to do there. The fishing is astounding. Largemouth bass dominate the scene, with tournaments taking place all year. Crappie are close behind. A ton of brush is sunk on this lake to build crappie habitat.

The bluegill fishing is overlooked but excellent, and the blue catfish fishery, what Smith spends most of his time chasing, is world-class. There are also great walleye in the lake that many people don’t know about. Smith guides for them too.

Neither Shags nor I caught the next world record on this trip, but we did boat one with only a couple of hours to do it. We re-booked with Smith for next year, and plan to spend the day experiencing one of his signature catfish and paddlefish combination trips. The Missouri paddlefish fishing season ends April 30.

See you down the trail.

Boat captain and crew help rescue passengers from a crashed plane

GULFPORT, Miss. ( WLOX /Gray News) - A boat captain and his crew carried out an impromptu rescue mission during what was supposed to be a normal fishing trip over the weekend.

Kyle Johnson and his crew were on their way to Chandeleur Islands when they saw a plane experiencing trouble over the Mississippi Sound.

“You never know what you’re going to run into at the Chandeleur Islands,” he said. “They are a really cool and magical place, and you never know what’s really going to happen.”

Johnson said they all were thinking that they hoped the troubled plane wouldn’t crash right before it plunged into the waters.

“It wasn’t a severe crash, but you never know what you’re walking into,” he said.

Seeing that the plane’s passengers needed help getting off the sinking plane, Johnson’s military expertise came into play.

“I told my clients, ‘Hey, look guys, I need you to do what I say. I’m in charge.’ I kept calm the whole time and had a plan the entire time,” Johnson said.

The waters were very rough, and both the boat and the plane were being buffeted by the waves, Johnson said. He and his crew worked to pull the passengers onto the boat and make sure they were safe.

“It was a sigh of relief for them because Chandeleur Island was very remote, 25 miles offshore with no cell phone service, and would take at least an hour for the Coast Guard to get there,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he plans to pack more safety supplies for future trips, including life jackets and urges others to do the same should they face a similar situation.

“If something would have happened with them and us, I would only have enough life jackets on my boat for me and my people, so bring more emergency equipment than you need and always have a plan if something goes wrong because you never know what’s going to happen out there,” he said.
