Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason Shares New 2022 North American Tour Dates

Pink Floyd co-founder and drummer Nick Mason has announced the rescheduled dates of his North American tour with his band, Saucerful of Secrets. The dates, now scheduled for the fall, had been planned to begin in mid-January but were postponed citing “uncertainty surrounding the Covid pandemic.” The North American tour, with the band performing early Floyd classics, now begins on Sept. 22 following an extensive tour of the U.K. and Europe this spring and summer. (The U.K. shows had been delayed for a third time due to the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.)

Eight dates have been added to the North American run, though the re-routing required that concerts in Cincinnati, St. Louis, Memphis, KC, Sacramento and Spokane needed to be canceled. See the full itinerary below. Tickets for the concerts are available here .

“We are really looking forward to returning to North America and we’re happy to be able to now announce these new dates for later this year,” said Nick Mason in the March 21 announcement. “We wanted to make sure to come back when it’s safe for our fans, the band, and our crew.”

Mason released a live album in autumn 2020, recorded in London. The 22-track collection, titled Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets Live at the Roundhouse , is available in a variety of formats. The concerts on the recordings took place in May 2019.

As Mason noted when he first formed the combo, “With the help of some like-minded friends, I have embarked on a voyage of discovery of the music that was the launch pad of Pink Floyd and my working life. It seems too early to retire, and I missed the interaction with other musicians.”

He is the only constant member of Pink Floyd, performing on all of their albums as well as all of their live shows.

Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets are Mason, Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp, longtime Pink Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, guitarist Lee Harris and keyboardist Dom Beken.

The group played their first gigs at four intimate live shows at London’s Dingwalls and The Half Moon in Putney in May 2018. These were Mason’s first live musical outings since Pink Floyd’s Division Bell tour in 1994, and the show at Dingwalls was his first since Pink Floyd played at the 2005 Live 8 concert in London.

The band went on to sell-out theaters around the world including three nights at London’s Roundhouse, where Pink Floyd played some of their most revered early shows in the 1960’s.

In April 2019, Mason’s longtime bandmate, Roger Waters, joined him on stage.

The 2022 tour will see the band further expand their repertoire and will play songs from Pink Floyd’s early catalog up to the 1972 album Obscured by Clouds .

Pink Floyd, still giving me goose bumps 40 years later and about to release a new album.

I have patiently waited 20 years to receive news from afar that we will once again be blessed with the next chapter of music from the eternal Pink Floyd and to say that I feel a fair amount of anticipation and excitement regarding the immanent release of their new album “The Endless River” in October 2014 is an understatement of epic proportions.

Having met at college in 1965 Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters & Richard Wright formed Pink Floyd and thankfully adding into their mix in 1967 the ever present front man David Gilmour (who in my opinion actually is “gods own guitarist”) and whatever your views regarding the politics that led to the eventual split from the band of Roger Waters, the music that both sides have gone on to produce either solo or as Pink Floyd I for one have been left begging and pleading for more.

When my cosmic melodic intervention occurred and I was exposed for the first time to the stirring sounds of Pink Floyd I was hanging out with my best friend, it was a scorching summer day in Sydney in 1974 and I was sitting in the back of her boyfriend’s 308 Sandman Panel Van with a few other mates winding down Mona Vale Road in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on our way to Warriewood Beach. The tail gate was open and the curtains were dancing in the humid air that was wrapping around the van kissing our faces as we looked out staring at the gum trees and native flora going by that was abundant on both sides of the road leading to the beach back then.

As we drove through the summer heat the tape deck proudly displayed on the dashboard came to life and it was in that moment that I heard the first spectacular musical notes of “Dark Side of the Moon” seducing me through the speakers that had been lovingly wired in and hanging in the back of the van. I remember suddenly feeling a realisation that I was being transformed experiencing the initial dose of “Floyd” goose bumps and the ensuing release from the mind numbing ordinary and as I came to life I knew then I would never again return to how I was before tasting those first delicious musical morsels of that album that consequently stayed in the charts for a monumental 741 weeks between 1973 and 1988.

When I saw my beloved Pink Floyd in 1988 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre after lining up at 5am to get tickets weeks before, I had found myself bleary eyed and third in line from the box office window when I secured seats 16 rows back from the stage and on the night in the midst of the other unwavering fans I took my seat nervously awaiting the arrival of the musical gods and goddesses who were about to gift us with one of the most profound live musical experiences I would ever have and one that is still unmatched to this day.

As the lights dimmed the moment had finally arrived and my idols walked onto the stage in all their glorious splendour assuming their positions and composing themselves as if they knew they were about to blow us away. When those first magical notes rang out almost instantaneously the floor began vibrating and as the music made its way up through my body it exploded out of the top of my head when I jumped to my feet as the arena erupted and it was clear we were hearing the unmistakable beginning sounds of “Shine on you Crazy Diamond”.

Not knowing where to look first, I felt myself being transformed as the music washed over me holding me in a place of uncertainty and wondering once again if I would be reborn and delivered by the musical perfection that was blossoming and unfolding like a spring flower bearing its brilliant soul to the world. I made a conscious decision to drink in every single moment that night as I gazed in disbelief at the Dalek like machines rising from the stage shooting their laser beams in time with the music across the audience before disappearing again as the band bathed in the soft mist of the smoke of the psychedelic atmosphere that is the genius of Pink Floyd.

I could happily have left at the end of the first song that night satisfied that I had lived a live music experience that nothing would ever come close to or better in my life time but get better it did with each perfect note that poured out one after the other taking me to a higher plane with every glorious heavenly song that was played but those moments were fleetingly tainted with a heavy feeling in the back of my mind that I would never experience this again and I couldn’t bear the thought of it ending.

And so I have waited for news of their return and whether or not I live to see them in the flesh again in whatever form they have morphed into with the sad passing of the late great Richard Wright in 2008 remains to be seen and in the meantime I have kept the hunger at bay with my records, tapes, CD’s, DVD’s and IPod still getting those goose bumps and soon I will be drinking from the psychedelic sounds of the “Endless River” but until then rock and roll on October!!.

Pink Floyd don’t really need introducing, do they? The Dark Side of the Moon is the second biggest-selling record in history, they pioneered progressive rock as we know it today, and are unquestionably one of the most influential musical groups in history. We are talking about a band, here, who are so big that one of their tribute acts - The Australian Pink Floyd Show - play arenas themselves. In 1994, they played their final tour dates in support of their final album to date, The Division Bell, which certainly showed no sign of them slowing down commercially; it remained on the UK charts for fifty-one weeks. Ten years after the departure of Roger Waters, though, their creativity was beginning to fizzle out. After ten years of dormancy, they were persuaded to reform - Rogers included - for Live 8, and played a stunning set that opened with ‘Breathe’ and ended on an extended version of ‘Comfortably Numb’. It would prove to be their final ever show, too, with keyboardist Richard Wright passing away in 2008. Later this year, however, they’ll release one last album, The Endless River, based on material from 1994 sessions that were tentatively known as The Big Spliff; there’s always the possibility that Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason will mark its release on stage.

It's very unlikely that they will perform live again but one can be optimistic. I saw them in 1994 and without doubt, it was one of the highlights of the year for me. They played a number of nights at Earls Court in London. Unfortunately, one night some of the seating collapsed and there were possibly some injuries, I wasn't there that night. The line up was obviously (as any fan would know) without Syd Barrett! Also, Roger Waters had already left the band. The visual aspects of the concert including the flying pigs, the aeroplane moving diagonally across the roof of the venue, the circular screen showing various films, some rather manic, were mesmorising, but without doubt it was the music and Dave Gilmour's singing that was the best part of the show.

Fans were well pleased with all the favourites that were included like Money, Comfortably Numb, etc. A truly awesome night of music.

David Gilmour Is Touring. Just Don’t Ask for Pink Floyd Classics

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

David Gilmour is planning to promote his upcoming solo album, Luck and Strange, with a rare tour. Just don’t show up expecting to hear Pink Floyd hits like “Wish You Were Here,” “Comfortably Numb,” or “Money.” In a new interview with Uncut , Gilmour said he has an “unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the Seventies” and would rather focus the set around his new album and other periods of Floyd’s history.

“[Other decades] might be better represented,” he said. “I mean, at least one from the Sixties. The one we’ve done in the past is 1967’s ‘Astronomy.’ That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from [1987’s] A Momentary Lapse of Reason and [1994’s] The Division Bell albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

“Sadly @rogerwaters you are antisemitic to your rotten core,” she wrote. “Also a Putin apologist and a lying, thieving, hypocritical, tax-avoiding, lip-synching, misogynistic, sick-with-envy, megalomaniac. Enough of your nonsense.” Gilmour shared the Tweet, adding “Every word demonstrably true.”

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, drake refutes kendrick lamar’s claims of his secret daughter, being a pedophile in ‘the heart part 6’, ‘politico’ misses mark in story on who’s funding pro-palestine protests against biden, angry trump calls biden admin the 'gestapo,' predicts 'world war three and everything else', 'i love you, paul': family believes their mom is 'adrienne from brooklyn' from viral beatles clip.

“I changed the band around last time for a number of reasons, one of which was it was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band,” Gilmour told Uncut. “So I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan. So we’re going to have some of the younger guys alongside [longtime bassist] Guy [Pratt] and the Webb Sisters, who sang with Leonard Cohen on his last tours.”

There’s no word on when Gilmour plans on launching his Luck and Strange tour. It’s quite possible he’ll change his mind by opening night and decide he simply can’t get away with skipping “Comfortably Numb,” which has been the climax of basically every solo gig he’s ever played, but that’s far from a safe bet. He’s spent quite a number of years “revisiting the Pink Floyd of the Seventies.” He’s ready to move on.

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour Announces Short UK Tour in 2024

by Em Casalena May 3, 2024, 1:26 pm

Pink Floyd fans in the United Kingdom are in for a very special treat this fall! Pink Floyd’s iconic guitarist and bassist David Gilmour will kick off a short residency in London at the Royal Albert Hall this October. It will mark his first series of live performances in about eight years. The tour dates will support his upcoming album, Luck And Strange , set for release on September 6.

Fans shouldn’t expect too many Pink Floyd renditions on this tour. According to an interview with Uncut Magazine, Gilmour revealed that he is not interested in performing 1970s-era Pink Floyd material on his upcoming tour. However, fans can still expect some Pink Floyd songs as well as Gilmour’s solo tracks.

The first performance of David Gilmour’s upcoming residency will be on October 9 in London, England at the Royal Albert Hall. The short tour will end after six dates on October 15.

Ticketmaster will be the main spot to get tickets to this short residency. The presale event will kick off on May 9 at 10:00 am local until the next day at 9:00 am local.

General on-sale will start on May 10 at 10:00 am local. If you can’t find tickets on Ticketmaster once tickets have gone to public sale, you might have some luck checking Viagogo . Viagogo is a great spot to find last-minute tickets to non-US concerts, especially for high-demand tours like this one.

Gilmour will likely announce an extension in the coming weeks, but if he doesn’t, you’ll want to secure your spot on this ultra-short tour ASAP!

David Gilmour , who has often given off the appearance of being happily retired, hasn’t been keeping himself from the studio after all. The ex- Pink Floyd singer-guitarist has announced his first album in nine years, “Luck and Strange,” and he’s giving everyone time to prepare for it, with the release not coming till Sept. 6.

The first teaser track is imminent, however, with “The Piper’s Call” due to come out on DSPs on Thursday, to be followed by a music video on Friday. He also released a short teaser on YouTube featuring himself and his dog in the studio during the mixing process.

Popular on Variety

Lyrics have mostly been written by Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, as has been the case with Gilmour’s albums for decades, and the latter-day/post-Roger Waters material that Pink Floyd did before retiring the moniker, Samson said in a statement that the songs are “written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.”

Other family members also contribute, harking back to family livestreams that the Gilmour clan did during the pandemic lockdowns. Romany Gilmour sings, plays harp and sings lead vocals on “Between Two Points.” Gabriel Gilmour contributes backing vocals. Charlie Gilmour wrote lyrics for the album’s closing song, “Scattered.”

Gilmour collaborated with a co-producer on the album, Charlie Andrew, who’s worked with ALT-J and Marika Hackman. “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos,” Gilmour recalled in a statement, “and said things like, ‘Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?’ and ‘Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?'” While Andrew questioning the need for guitar solos may not put him in the immediate good stead of all Gilmour fans, the artist says the approach of not taking any tropes for granted was refreshing. “He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

Famed photographer Anton Corbijn is responsible for the album imagery.

Gilmour was last in the news in 2023 when the deepening of a longstanding rift between him and Waters became apparent. Samson responded to Waters’ ongoing controversies by publicly stating to her husband’s former bandmate that he was “rotten to your antisemitic core” and “a Putin apologist,” and Gilmour emphatically cosigned his spouse’s statement, writing: “Every word demonstrably true.”

Gilmour toured behind the 2015 “Rattle That Lock” album, his fourth solo effort, and had suggested he was done hitting the road after that; there’s no indication yet whether he might reconsider in support of the new effort.

27th February 2023 – The city of Frankfurt on Friday announced that it was canceling the forthcoming concert of former Pink Floyd vocalist Roger Waters scheduled for May 28th 2023

A statement from the Central Council of German further urged venues in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Cologne hosting Waters’ “This is Not A Drill 2023” tour to reconsider however at the moment of writing no further German dates have been cancelled.

25th September 2022 – R oger Waters’ concerts in Poland have been canceled after he commented on the war in Ukraine. Krakow City Council has said it will discuss declaring the Pink Floyd musician “persona non grata.”

Concerts by Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters have been canceled by a venue in the Polish city of Krakow, organizers said on Sunday after the artist’s comments on the war in Ukraine sparked a storm of criticism.

“Live Nation Polska and Tauron Arena Krakow have canceled Roger Waters’ concert,” organizers said in a statement on the venue’s website. However, they did not elaborate on the reason for the cancellation.

On Saturday, state news agency PAP reported that a spokesman for Tauron Arena said Waters’ management had canceled the concert without giving a reason.

Waters was due to perform in Krakow in April 2023, but Polish media reports of an open letter he wrote earlier this month to Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska sparked backlash.

In the letter, Waters said the West should stop providing arms to Ukraine, accusing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of allowing “extreme nationalism” in Ukraine and urging him to “put an end to this deadly war.”

Poland counts itself among Kyiv’s most loyal allies, and public support for the Ukrainian cause is very high.

The Krakow city council is scheduled to debate a motion on Wednesday that would declare Waters “persona non grata.” One of the councillors, Lukasz Wantuch, had urged city residents to boycott the Waters concerts.

“Roger Waters, an open supporter of Putin, wants to play in Krakow … It would be shameful for our city,” Wantuch said earlier on social media. “Let him sing in Moscow.”

In a social media post, Waters denied that he or his management had canceled the concerts and criticized Wantuch, accusing him of “draconian censoring of my work.”

“Lukasz Wantuch seems to know nothing of my history of working, all my life, at some personal cost, in the service of human rights,” Waters said.

Paraphrasing the words of his hit single “Another Brick in the Wall”, Waters also wrote: “Hey! Lukasz Wantuch! ‘Leave them Kids Alone!'”.

He said he had only wanted to urge the countries involved “to work towards a negotiated peace rather than escalate matters towards a bitter end.”

Wantuch said in a Facebook post on Sunday morning that he was in Ukraine and would respond to Waters’ statement in the evening.

Rock legend 'unwilling' to play some of band's biggest hits on new tour

M ay 4—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In a recent interview with Uncut, Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour said he won't play any music released by the band in the 1970s during an upcoming tour.

Gilmour said that his new solo album, titled "Luck and Strange," is set to release on Sept. 6, and he has potential plans to tour for the first time in eight years.

While speaking to Uncut, Gilmour said he has "an unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the '70s" on the tour. Among the band's hits from that decade? "Money," "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb."

He added that he would be willing to play other songs from Pink Floyd's past, however.

"Yeah, they might be better represented. I mean, at least one from the '60s. The one we've done in the past is [1967′s] 'Astronomy.' That's always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start," he said. "There's songs from the 'Momentary Lapse Of Reason' and 'The Division Bell' albums. I mean, I think 'High Hopes' is as good as anything we ever did at any time."

Gilmour also teased that there is still some unreleased material to come once the tour is finished.

After the tour is over, he said he is planning more recording dates, "which will practically force me to concentrate [on writing more songs]. I mean, we've got plenty more pieces of half-formed music that we can get started on. The intention is to get something else out as soon as possible."

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is already one of the most commercially successful albums of all time. The title has earned more weeks on the Billboard 200 than any other, and it has consistently sold well for decades. Even after all those sales, there are still thousands of fans who are willing to purchase the project again, and their love for the set has made it a huge win all over again.

Sales of Dark Side of the Moon exploded last week. The title was re-released as a special collector’s edition for Record Store Day, and the offering was a complete and undeniable success–one of the most impressive from this year’s event, it seems.

In the past tracking week, Dark Side of the Moon sold another 10,671 copies in America. That kind of sum is difficult to reach for even current-day major musicians when they have a highly-publicized new release to share with the masses. The fact that Pink Floyd has mustered such a number with a half-century-old album is incredible.

Sales of Dark Side of the Moon were up significantly last week when compared to the period prior. The week before Record Store Day, the album sold 2,490 copies. That number grew by 328% week-over-week, and it’s all thanks to this one limited edition release.

An increase of more than 8,000 sales from one week to another proved to be enough to make Dark Side of the Moon a real competitor on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart. On that purchase-only list, the title returns to the top 10 thanks to this surge in popularity. Last frame, it sat down at No. 35 on the ranking, but now it settles at No. 8.

For Record Store Day 2024, Dark Side of the Moon was re-released in a format that lovers of the band couldn’t resist. According to the event’s website , this offering included a “limited edition crystal clear 2-LP, 180g set of the classic album featuring UV artwork printing on the non-groove side.” A prism effect–like the one on the famous cover–was pressed onto the vinyl, which makes it look beautiful.

Taking into account all forms of consumption, Dark Side of the Moon shifted another 14,324 equivalent units last week in America. That sum includes both the 10,000-plus purchases, as well as streaming equivalents. It’s a hefty enough number to bring the title back to the Billboard 200, where it’s inching closer to becoming the first release to hit 1,000 weeks on that tally.

David Gilmour Plots First Tour Since 2016

Last week, David Gilmour unveiled Luck and Strange , a new collection of original songs from the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist due to arrive on September 6 via Sony Music. The artist has made a moment of his first full-length offering since 2015’s Rattle That Lock , returning to his adoring public after nearly a decade away by debuting the dreamy lead single “The Piper’s Call” on BBC Radio 2 and opening up on his process through a presser. This week, Gilmour has granted further insight with a cover story for Uncut , in which the artist expressed his intentions to tour again at long last.

Keen-eyed superfans could note Gilmour’s first intonations of a live series through his UK webstore, which indicated that fans who pre-ordered Luck and Strange would “get early access to future UK dates.” In his Uncut feature, which has made the rounds online via fansite Neptune Pink Floyd , Gilmour clarified that he is presently in the planning stage for a new tour, which would be the artist’s first run since 2016. “For the upcoming tour, rehearsals need to be scheduled and a setlist needs to be put together,” he offers, noting an “asterisk system” in the works to determine which songs will make the setlist. So far, the entire tracking of Luck and Strange is certain to make the cut, “but that’s about as far as I’ve got.”

Gilmour also spoke on his feelings about bringing back classic Pink Floyd, stressing “an unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the ’70s,” per Uncut . Unfortunately for golden-era die-hards, this formulation counts out iconic entries like Dark Side of the Moon , Wish You Were Here , Animals and The Wall , though it leaves the door open for some formative and mature Floyd cuts.

When asked about the potential for these projects to make the mix, Gilmour offered, “Yeah, they might be better represented. I mean, at least one from the 60s. The one we’ve done in the past is ‘Astronomy’ [“Astronomy Domine,” track one from 1967 debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ]. That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from the [ A ] Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

On his backing ensemble, Gilmour shared that he had shifted his band as “it was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band,” instead opting in 2024 to “get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space.” To open this space, the artist intends to recruit some “younger guys alongside Guy [Pratt] and The Webb Sisters, who sang with Leonard Cohen on his last tours.” Pratt is an esteemed instrumentalist who has collaborated with Gilmour since 1984 and toured with Pink Floyd from 1987-1990, later contributing bass to several tracks on 1994’s The Division Bell . The artist is also featured on the Luck and Strange record.

In closing, Gilmour noted that Luck and Strange and the ramp-up to his supporting tour have stoked and focused his creative fire, revealing that fans need not worry about another nine-year wait before the artist’s next project. The artist intends to plunge into his next work immediately after the tour, “which will practically force me to concentrate. I mean, we’ve got plenty more pieces of half-formed music that we can get started on. The intention is to get something else out as soon as possible”
