14 sustainable travel companies you can feel good about booking with

Do some good while seeing the world when you book with these ethical and sustainable travel companies

Karen Edwards

While we don’t want to labour on the negatives, you don’t need to be an expert or activist to understand that we are in a climate pinch. It seems a little contradictory to fear for the future while excitedly encouraging international travel, but we humans are an innovative bunch. Exploring the globe doesn’t need to be devastating, and being a responsible traveller doesn’t mean lectures and negativity. Whether you call it eco-travel, sustainable, ethical, regenerative or eco-travel, there is plenty to get excited about.

An increasing number of sustainable travel companies are creating itineraries that allow curious minds to see the world while keeping the impact down. The experiences are awe-inspiring, from hiking remote mountaintops to embracing the world’s most impressive national parks, allowing visitors to engage with destinations in a way that extends far beyond the superficial. If you’re looking for an ethical and environmentally driven travel company for your next adventure, look no further.

Byway Travel

1.  Byway Travel

In an ambitious mission statement, UK travel platform Byway declares that its goal is to make flight-free holidays a mainstream holiday choice. Their way of doing so? By helping people discover the beauty of slow, overland travel across the British Isles and Europe . Founder and CEO Cat Jones launched the now B Corporation-certified company during the first Covid lockdown, determined to find a way to reduce flight emissions. Her explanation was simple: If we continue on the current trajectory, emissions from flying are due to triple by 2050.

2.  Gondwana Ecotours

Named after the ancient supercontinent that gradually split to become the land masses we recognize today, Gondwana Ecotours says its mission is to bring people from different continents closer together, one trip at a time. The New Orleans -based company specializes in small group and private tours that take on exhilarating experiences around the globe, such as gorilla trekking in Rwanda and eco-adventures in Patagonia and Mendoza.

A key component of Gondwana is its network of guides who live in the communities visited, adding personal knowledge, depth and authenticity to the experience while providing tourism-generated income. The company is also committed to limiting its carbon footprint through sustainable travel practices and is recognized for offsetting more than 580 tons of carbon emissions. Since 2021, its tours have been 100-percent carbon-neutral, as certified by the Cooler emissions tracking organization.

Intrepid Travel

3.  Intrepid Travel

Australian-owned Intrepid has always been forthright in declaring its commitment to ethical and responsible practices. In 2018, it became one of the first global travel operators to be B Corporation-certified. Since 2010, it has been operating as the world’s largest carbon-neutral company, carefully measuring and offsetting all unavoidable carbon emissions for 13 years.

Their trips are just as impressive. From 15-day expeditions traversing the extraordinary gorges and remote villages of northern Pakistan’s Hunza Valley to nine-day itineraries centred around baby gorilla naming ceremonies in Rwanda’s spectacular Volcanoes National Park, Intrepid offer true bucket list travel adventures suited to guests of all interests and abilities. In 2020, as a part of the Tourism Declares A Climate Emergency initiative, the company published a seven-point climate commitment plan – revealing its intention to transition to 100% renewable energy use in offices by 2025 and on all trips by 2030.

Experience Travel Group

4.  Experience Travel Group

Operating on the belief that ‘travel should be about reciprocation’, Asia travel specialist Experience Travel Group holds responsible travel at its core, enabling guests to interact with the community and experience real cultural immersion on every trip. Another B Corporation-certified company, the team is dedicated to creating experiences that divert away from trendy hubs and big hotels. Instead, they build personalised itineraries with initiatives to give back to the community included in the package.

On adventures in Indonesia , Laos, Cambodia , Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam , for example, guests can enjoy delicious local dishes at ‘social enterprise’ restaurants that support vulnerable young people through job training and employment. In Cambodia, a trip to the Phare Circus in Siem Reap sends funds directly to a performing arts school for underprivileged children in nearby Battambang. A three-day hike along sections of Sri Lanka ’s Pekoe Trail follows the old horse and cart routes that carried tea to the ports, bringing vital income to little-visited communities.

Seacology

5.  Seacology

In 1990, American ethnobotanist Dr Paul Cox was conducting forest research in Samoa when village leaders told him 30,000 acres of pristine rainforest were about to be logged due to a government decree to fund a school. Cox was horrified and quickly devised a proposal to raise the needed money to conserve the forest in perpetuity. His plan worked and has come to define the Seacology model: Provide material benefits to villages that pledge to protect their natural resources.

Today, Seacology offers unique ecotourism adventures throughout the world’s islands, where travelers visit active projects, interact with local people and are part of the formula that helps conserve both habitats and communities. Seacology guests also explore intriguing island environments, from the coral reefs of  Fiji to the rainforests of Borneo, while staying at well-appointed resorts and visiting important cultural sites. With all this tropical splendour, expect plenty of opportunities to scuba dive, snorkel, hike and kayak.

6.  Discover Corps

Discover Corps is the leader in the rapidly growing field of 'volunteer vacations' focusing on children, schools, animals and wildlife conservation. Yes, 'voluntourism' has often become a buzzword to cash in on thinly veiled claims, earning criticism and scrutiny over the years. However, Discover Corps operates with complete transparency and has become something of a gold standard for the model.

Trip itineraries are designed to connect travellers to local communities and provide a deeper understanding of the culture, issues, and ways of life in locations around the world. Many projects are in Africa , Asia , and Latin America and can range from caring for elephants in Thailand to helping to protect the animals in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park region.

ROW Adventures

7.  ROW Adventures

From its beginnings as a whitewater rafting company in the US's Pacific Northwest, ROW Adventures has evolved into an adventure travel company that advocates the transformative nature of human-powered experiences. According to ROW, connecting people with nature results in positive impacts, and the company adheres to conducting business in an inclusive and sustainable way while promoting social equity, environmental stewardship and accountability. Human-powered activities allow participants to fully observe the surroundings, whether white water rafting in Idaho's Salmon River, sea kayaking the orcas in Canada, or trekking across Machu Picchu.

ROW also recognizes that travel is a large contributor to the world’s carbon footprint and subsequently mitigates the impact by offsetting carbon-producing activities whenever possible. At the same time, trips also educate guests to be advocates for locations visited, with special recognition given to the awareness of Indigenous communities and honouring their legacies, lives and connections to the land.

Natural Habitat Adventures

8.  Natural Habitat Adventures

Conservation through exploration is the credo of Natural Habitat Adventures , the official travel partner of the World Wildlife Fund. Nat Hab, as it’s called, is committed to environmentally friendly nature travel, stressing that its travellers become a force for change in addressing the planet's most pressing conservation challenges. Polar bear tours in the Canadian Arctic , African safaris and South American nature tours are examples of the company’s itineraries where tourism dollars become an influential incentive for communities to protect their natural resources.

Nat Hab also acknowledges that its 8,000 annual travellers on all seven continents expend plenty of CO2. To mitigate travel’s carbon output, the company leans into offsetting measures. From 2007 to 2019, Nat Hab offset 49,418 tons of carbon dioxide and has become the world's first 100-percent carbon-neutral travel company. They’ve also provided more than $4.5 million to support WWF’s global conservation efforts and continue to give one-percent of gross sales plus $150,000 annually in support of WWF’s global mission.

9.  Cheeseman's Ecological Safaris

Ecology safaris catering to wildlife enthusiasts looking for an in-depth nature experience is what husband-and-wife founders Doug and Gail Cheeseman envisioned when they started their namesake company in 1980. Doug, a college zoology and ecology professor, and Gail, a naturalist, turned their passion for nature into a travel company focusing on comprehensive wildlife tours all over the globe. Working with local guides and wildlife researchers, tours are designed for hardcore animal lovers who are obsessed with travel and enjoy learning about the animals they encounter.

For example, Cheeseman’s  Palau National Marine Reserve diving trip in the western Pacific Ocean offers 12 days of snorkelling, paddling, sailing and diving among the awe-inspiring tropical islands in the region.

Quark Expeditions

10.  Quark Expeditions

Quark Expeditions co-founders Lars Wikander and Mike McDowell took the first group of commercial travellers to the North Pole in 1991, completing the first-ever tourism transit of the Northeast Passage. That inaugural expedition proved a game-changer and positioned the company at the forefront of polar explorations. In the three decades since, its polar travellers have visited remote parts of the Arctic and Antarctic.

With the Earth’s polar regions threatened by climate change, Quark is committed to raising awareness of these delicate ecosystems through environmentally responsible tourism. A facet of that commitment is the company’s Polar Promise to reduce its footprint and work with other industry leaders, as well as guests, to address the complex and challenging issues facing the regions. Coordinating with a global network of scientists, community leaders and sustainability innovators, the company plans to contribute a minimum of $500,000 each year in support of key environmental initiatives and sustainable development projects.

These Travel Companies Created Tools to Help You Travel More Sustainably

The Global Visions Awards honorees in this category can help you build more sustainable travel habits right from the moment you book a trip.

Jeff Chu is an editor-at-large at Travel + Leisure .

responsible travel companies

The Travel + Leisure Global Vision Awards aim to identify and honor companies, individuals, destinations, and organizations taking strides to develop more sustainable and responsible travel products, practices, and experiences. Not only are they demonstrating thought leadership and creative problem-solving, they are taking actionable, quantifiable steps to protect communities and environments around the world. What's more, they are inspiring their industry colleagues and travelers to do their part.

Adopting more sustainable travel habits is easier than you might think, and it can start with the simple act of booking a trip. It's especially simple if you support one of the Global Vision Awards honorees in this category. The three companies — one online travel agency and two tour operators — give travelers near effortless ways to give back to communities and causes around the world. With a booking platform that incentivizes charitable giving, a subscription model for carbon offsets, and a diagnostic tool that measures the socioeconomic impact of a trip, the honorees on this list nudge travelers — and the industry at large — in a more responsible, conscious direction. — T+L Editors

Kind Traveler

Jessica Blotter and Sean Krejci, the founders of Kind Traveler , have created a travel-booking platform that offers a clever, easy-to-use system for both seeing the world and investing in making that world better. Make a donation to one of their vetted charities, and you unlock special rates for their hundreds of partner hotels. For example, if you're planning a trip to the Maldives and animal welfare is a cause close to your heart, a contribution of as little as $10 to the Manta Trust — which researches and protects threatened manta rays in the region — will discount your booking at Hurawalhi Island Resort by an average of $275 per night. One hundred percent of donations go to the chosen cause.

Intrepid Travel x Offset Earth

Going carbon-neutral may be a present-day preoccupation for many companies — but for the Australian tour operator Intrepid Travel , which takes tens of thousands of travelers on small-group escorted tours annually, it's very last decade. Intrepid achieved carbon-neutral status in 2010. By the end of 2020, it plans to become the world's first "climate positive" travel company through its partnership with carbon offsetting startup Offset Earth . Through this program, Intrepid hopes to remove more carbon dioxide from the environment than it produces.

But Intrepid's responsible-travel roots run even deeper: The company operates as a certified B corporation, which means it measures its success not just by its financial profits but also by social and environmental outcomes and public transparency. In 2014, it became the first tour operator to eliminate all elephant rides on its itineraries; more than 100 other travel companies have since followed suit. It also invests in more than two dozen projects in the locales where it runs tours, including an educational initiative for girls in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains, reforestation efforts in Kenya, and kelp-forest conservation in Australia.

The Ripple Score by G Adventures

Done right, tourism "creates financial opportunities for women, youth, and indigenous communities, and empowers local people to protect their environment for future generations," Canadian entrepreneur Bruce Poon Tip says. This vision is at the heart of G Adventures , the tour operator Poon Tip founded in 1990, which strives to maximize the positive economic impact of travel on communities around the world. Today, some 200,000 travelers take a G Adventures trip each year; the company organizes itineraries to every continent except Antarctica. Last year, it introduced the Ripple Score , a metric that tells travelers exactly how (and how much of) the money spent on a G Adventures package benefits the people and places they visit. In the cacao-growing Ecuadorian village of Shandia, for instance, local youths lead visitors on cycling tours. On Malaysia's Libaran Island, residents have received training in traditional craft and cookery, skills that enable them to benefit from the steady, lucrative market of visitors drawn by the island's nesting sea turtles. (The trips that feature these excursions earn a 98 and a perfect 100, respectively.) The Ripple Score lets travelers see how their presence in these places affects the people they meet — and thanks to a new program, Project 100 , 2020 will see 100 new tourism-related community initiatives that tour groups can support on the ground. Poon Tip says, "tourism can be a force for good — if we approach it in a responsible and inclusive way."

Center for Responsible Travel Logo

Travel Responsibly

Responsible tourism includes many types of travel, all of which aim to minimize tourism’s negative impacts on the environment and local communities while maximizing the positives. Traveling responsibly does not mean staying home. It means planning trips carefully and thoughtfully so they can both enjoy the experience they seek while also having a positive impact on the destination, its people, environment, and wildlife.

How Travel is Changing

We have seen a shift in the types of travel experiences consumers demand and an increase in sustainability initiatives and community involvement among the tourism industry. A growing number of travelers are looking for authenticity, localization, uniqueness, and a pristine environment. From the destination perspective, a competitive advantage is created by offering those qualities. It pays for the destinations and travel businesses to protect their “product,” which goes hand in hand with sustainability and community well-being.

What does it mean for your trip?

It is important to note “responsible travel” does not mean a trip has to be expensive. While many luxury tourism companies have made tremendous strides in sustainability, budget and moderate travelers have countless options as well.

Destinations want you – responsible travelers – because you spend your money staying in locally owned hotels, eating in non-chain restaurants, buying local handicrafts, building bridges with different cultures, and acting with an environmental and social conscience. Not only are you leaving more money behind in the pockets of locals, but you are also supporting the sense of place. It’s not about how much money you spend – it’s about where and how you spend it.

Responsible travel options are everywhere, but it is up to you – the traveler – to educate yourself on how to get involved.

Responsible Travel Tips

Here is some advice to help you on your journey:

  • Check out CREST’s Responsible Travel Tips , where most of our tips can be found.
  • Utilize the United States Travel Care Code , which provides travelers with simple guidelines on how they can reduce the impact of their travel on the environment, and the 7 Leave No Trace Principles , which is a framework of minimum impact practices for anyone visiting the outdoors.
  • If you’d like to give back while traveling, see our Dos and Don’ts of Travel Giving .
  • View the past donors to CREST online auctions , if you need help picking out a hotel or tour operator.
  • Review the #RecreateResponsibly resources for recreating outdoors and help keep people, places, and communities safe.
  • Look into sustainable tourism certification programs in the places where you are traveling to find out what tourism businesses are certified. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has a really helpful list of approved and recognized certification programs.
  • Check out websites like Rainforest Alliance Green Vacations , Book Greener , and Responsible Travel , for more hotel and tour operator alternatives.
  • Consider visiting a place that has a formal geotourism program. Geotourism is defined as “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.” These destinations have had MapGuides made by National Geographic Maps that help connect travelers with localized experiences, though many other towns and rural regions offer similar experiences if you explore what they have to offer.
  • Explore the organization Pack for a Purpose, which allows you to simply use a small amount of space in your luggage to pack supplies needed by community projects around the world that work with partner hotels.
  • Consider visiting a destination with an Impact Tourism program . CREST has helped to establish three destination-wide give-back programs in Cape Cod , Monteverde, Costa Rica , and Grenada, West Indies . Travel Oregon also has a very robust Travel Philanthropy Fund. Don’t miss the impact tourism page on our website to connect with individual travel companies all over the world that have established community and environmental support programs.

Responsible Travel

Change the world just by having the time of your life..

We have always believed in the life-changing power of travel, but for that power to exist we need to travel the right way. Since the very beginning, G Adventures’ vision for travelling responsibly has meant giving back as much — if not more — than what you take away. Yes, travel should be incredibly fun (have you been on one of our tours?), but we also believe travel needs to be a force for good. For you, for local communities around the world, and for the world itself — we call it “community tourism.” See how we do it below.

responsible travel companies

A lot of companies use “sustainability” or “sustainable travel” to talk about exploring the world in a better way, but we’ve never been ones to follow in others’ footsteps or borrow out-dated ideas. Our commitment to making travel a force for good is different — so we call it G for Good. It stands for all of the social, environmental, and ethical good we create as a business which helps to fuel community tourism . Which is… you ask? It means our tours are built on meaningful relationships with local communities and directly benefit the people and places we visit. Today, our definition of community tourism means that the communities we positively impact ripples far beyond these destinations, to include our employees, supplier and agent partners, small business owners, customers, social followers, and travellers like you. G for Good is what makes us, us. With your help, we can make travel the force for good we’ve known it can be since our company was established over three decades ago.

Acting Responsibly

Our efforts to protect and conserve our world fall under two approaches. The first, Acting Responsibly, is our commitment to improve the sustainability of our own operations. You can’t create change without taking action — so that’s what we’ve done. If you want to make sure your next trip follows these guidelines, all you have to do is travel with us!

Animal Welfare

G Adventures recognizes the importance of animal welfare. That’s why we have worked with experts from World Animal Protection, The Jane Goodall Institute and The World Cetacean Alliance to draw up a robust policy, which builds on the ABTA Global Welfare Guidelines for Animals in Tourism and puts the needs of animals first. We want to ensure that all animals featured on our tours are treated humanely.

Child Welfare

It is critical that no child is ever harmed as a result of tourism. Travellers have the power and responsibility to make a true impact in the communities they visit, and that’s why we actively work to ensure child welfare is protected in the places we operate. We were also the first global travel company to achieve Friend’s International ChildSafe certification.

Climate Action

With all the good global travel does for local communities, it’s an unfortunate truth that the industry produces environmentally harmful carbon dioxide. That’s why we signed the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and got to work on halving our carbon footprint by 2030. Want to know exactly how we and our travellers are going about it? Read on to review our full Climate-Biodiversity Action Plan.

Respecting local cultures

Connecting curious travellers with Indigenous communities is an essential part of our identity at G Adventures. We are committed to respecting the rights, history, and culture of Indigenous people while ensuring that tourism supports their well-being.

Plastics Partnership Project

Plastic pollution is a huge global problem. G Adventures is working with our partners to eliminate as much single-use plastic on our tours as possible.

Traveller Conduct Policy

We believe travel should be a respectful, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone. We’re a community of diverse individuals united by a profound respect for, and enthusiastic belief in, our values and each other. That’s why we designed a set of guidelines to help establish a sense of safety, security, and happiness for all on any of our tours. This includes our staff members, partner suppliers, and the local people and cultures in the destinations we visit.

responsible travel companies

Creating Positive Impact

Creating Positive Impact is our second approach to responsible travel. These initiatives focus on leaving the right impact in the places you visit with us.

responsible travel companies

Established in 2003, Planeterra is our non-profit partner dedicated to ensuring communities touched by tourism benefit from the opportunities it provides. They help empower local people to develop their communities, conserve their cultures, and create humane and supportive systems for their endeavours.

Planeterra Projects

Our mission has always been a simple one — to help people thrive through solutions, not handouts. We do this by providing the resources and opportunities for local people in the areas we serve to develop and strengthen their communities with projects supported by Planeterra. Then, our network of travellers provide these communities with the long-term income to make these solutions sustainable.

Ripple Score

You deserve to see exactly what we mean when we say we’re changing lives through travel. Now you can. On a scale of one to 100, this score shows you how much of your money spent in destination goes towards using local services on your tour. The higher the Ripple Score, the more money that is staying in the local community. Look for it on your trip itinerary.

Our Modern Slavery Statement

G Adventures is committed to understanding all potential modern slavery risks related to our business and to putting steps into place to ensure there is no slavery or human trafficking in our operations.

Get ready for some of the most exciting eco-travel experiences we can find, from some of the best ecotourism companies out there.

What is ecotourism and why does it matter?

Ecotourism is essentially brings together tourism, helping human communities and conservation of the natural world.

The International Ecotourism Society  describe it as: “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.”

Ecotourism matters because it is a means of reversing the ills of the mainstream travel industry. Tourism, when practiced unconsciously and only for the benefit of the consumer, can do devastating damage to the earth and to the lives of locals.

By engaging in ecotourism, you get what you really want from travelling. Experience different cultures or uncover natural wonders safe in the knowledge you’re helping to promote and preserve, enjoying not exploiting them.

responsible travel companies

Ecotourism companies help the world by:

  • Giving tourists memorable experiences that increase their understanding of a host countries’ political, environmental, and social situation.
  • Financially or physically aiding conservation efforts.
  • Minimising social, behavioural, physical or psychological impact on a host country.
  • Expanding cultural and/or environmental awareness and respect for another country.
  • Financially benefitting local people and their industries.
  • Providing visitors with first-hand experience of the rights, beliefs and practices of Indigenous Peoples, working them and empowering them.

This being said, ecotourism is by no means a sacrifice.

It offers a far more fulfilling way to have a holiday.

Rather than a mindless short-lived trip, it can be a memorable, immersive experience that will shift your perspectives and remain with you forever.

What is overtourism?

‘Overtourism’ is a broad term, used to describe a situation where so many travellers are flocking to a destination, that they have a negative impact on its local population and its nature.

Think the cruise ships of Venice (recently banned from the medieval city) or the crowds at Ankor Wat.

Want to know when a place is suffering from overtourism?

Does the list below sound familiar? If so, avoid a destination and consider an alternative.

  • Tourists cannot view landmarks because of the crowds.
  • Fragile environments become degraded.
  • Narrow, rural roads become jammed with tourist vehicles.
  • Wildlife is frightened away and has its habitat ruined.
  • Rent prices rise so high that local tenants are pushed out to make way for holiday rentals.
  • Indigenous people come to rely  too  heavily on the business tourists bring, and local industries and crafts suffer as a result.
  • Seas and land become littered and polluted.

Overtourism has come about because of the growth of the tourism industry.

For years it has been considered and touted as ethical- a means of bringing money to struggling communities. Unfortunately is has now crossed a line, and is often doing more harm than good.

responsible travel companies

What can you do about overtourism?

1. there’s a time and a place.

One simple way to combat overtourism is to think about when and where you travel.

Visiting destinations during the ‘low season’ help keep the local tourist industry ticking.

What’s more, you are bound to enjoy them better when you are not constantly in claustrophobic crowds. Many countries, like Spain and Italy, still have relatively untouristed areas that would benefit from more business. They are just as beautiful as the beaches from the brochure, only a little further off the beaten track and will probably put far less pressure on the purse strings.

2. Keep your cash flow local

Try, as far possible, to make sure your money goes straight to the locals, as opposed to middle men. For example:

  • Pay national park entrance fees to ensure your visit supports conservation.
  • Stay in locally owned guesthouses.
  • Eat at local restaurants.
  • Take tours with local guides.

It seems so obvious, but sometimes when people finally get that hold they’ve been hankering after, they neglect to pack their ethical rule book.

Travel is a privilege, and it is so important to remain respectful towards the land and the locals whose home you are inhabiting. So, leaving no litter, honouring local customs, practices and religions and doing nothing to disturb wildlife are fundamental for overturning overtourism.

Responsible Travel has a name that immediately makes it stand out from the other travel sites. This, its founder says, was done intentionally to challenge the holiday industry and to act like a Trojan horse, inspiring change from within. The result is a holiday booking platform that gets you the dream holiday you've always wanted only without the guilt. The company even started the World Responsible Tourism Awards back in 2004, aiming to inspire change in tourism.

Sure, you still have to get a flight in most cases, but the way your trip impacts the local community is taken into account. In fact Responsible Travel aims to help the community with its holidays. On top of that it runs a Trip for Trip scheme which puts profits into helping take children out on day trips for new experiences. It's one of the best online travel sites you can use, and one of the few that puts sustainability at the heart of what it offers.

Responsible Travel offers a wide range of vacations

Responsible Travel: What you get

Responsible Travel offers over 6,000 responsible holidays from 400 providers worldwide, making it ones of the largest green travel companies. It is also an ABTA member meaning your investments are protected so you can be sure you'll get your money back should there be any cancellations. Something like Expedia has more options, but that's a far larger and less responsible operator.

Each holiday is screened for its environmental compliance with a view to help grassroot initiatives and local providers. It was responsible for publishing the first carbon audits of holidays and tries to avoid flights where possible. The company also works to stop orphanage tourism, elephant rides, orca shows and doesn't offer any zoo related trips at all.

Since 2019 the site has been publishing its own travel guides and now features over 650, all of which aim to help educate travelers on how they can have the best holiday while making the right impact.

Responsible Travel: Website and user experience

The Responsible Travel website is super minimal, clear and easy to use. Right from the homepage you're met with big, inviting imagery. Across the top are options to search by Destination, Holiday Type, Last Minute, Offers or via the self-published Guides. If you go by location you're met with a guide to the area including maps, local history and community information as well as the best times to go, weather guides and must see sights.

This all makes it a decent option if you're not sure what you want and enjoy the part of picking the holiday. Shopping between a trip to the African plains with the Maasi or bullet train travelling around Japan – not a decision you get to enjoy making too often probably.

Once you've narrowed down a holiday – from a list shown with large images, clear price ranges and traveler review ratings – you are met with more useful information. There's a selection of real images from actual holidays, the price 'from' and 'to' and a list of what's included (or not, in the case of flights). You even get a day by day break-down of the trip saying what you'll be doing and where. You can check dates, prices and availability or hit the "Enquire Or Book" icon.

This takes you to an email webform where you can send your request. Yup, this is a real person dealing with you, not a pre-populated list that you can hit to order instantly. That's a positive for a bespoke booking with a helpful travel team guiding you along, but a negative for anyone that wants to book there and then in a hurry. That said, you can call directly with a number given, if you want to handle everything quickly over the phone, or just prefer the person to person talking.

Extra information on "free from" food options and LGBT (they left off the Q+) friendliness are also welcome additions.

Responsible Travel: Sustainability credentials

Responsible Travel can be a little more expensive, but we think the extra cost is worth it

Responsible Travel works to be eco-friendly on a number of fronts.

Community Primarily it was setup to help create a balance between travellers and local communities. The idea being that both sides gain from the trip so the local communities welcome visitors and share their experience and wisdom with the holidaymakers who's money is giving back to helping sustain that community.

One example of community support, beyond just money, is at the Okavango Delta World Heritage Site where locals take you to the Delta so they get paid for their knowledge of the area. This ecosystem is under threat a dam being built that could cut off its water supply. By informing travellers it's more likely that actions like that will be opposed and the area can be protected.

Environment Travel is kept to small groups for a more intimate experience but also less impact on the environment. This also helps to keep the carbon footprint down and where possible local forms of transport will be used, like trains rather than planes, for example. Gas cooking rather than coal, proper waste disposal and locally owned accommodation use are all ways to help reduce negative environmental impact. And that's just naming a few, there are plenty more listed specific to each holiday.

Climate This gets its own section as its mostly about keeping flights to a minimum. This means taking a longer holiday with fewer flights if possible, avoiding internal flights, picking economy seats, choosing a newer aircraft and packing light. Responsible Travel's founder Justin Francis works with the UK government and has founded the Jet Zero Council which has created legislation to get to zero carbon aviation.

Responsible Travel encourages its holidaymakers to give a review of the trip but unlike many sites this also features a star rating for the eco-friendliness of the offering. The result is a clear view, when browsing the site, of just how good each trip is.

Responsible Travel: Customer reviews

With a Trustpilot review rating of 4.3, with 71% "excellent" ratings, this appears to be a very well received website.

One positive review from Catherine in California said: "I have arranged two trips using Responsible Travel, a group walking tour of Mt. Blanc and a guided cycle trip in Italy. Both booking experiences were smooth and all my questions were handled promptly. The trips used very knowledgeable guides and they were open to using local food and entertainment as well as being mindful about recycling and the environment. I will definitely book through Responsible Travel again. Thank you to the team."

One negative review, from RL in Great Britain, talking about his three star review not appearing said: "My conclusion is that they 'lose' less than perfect reviews." The only other negative review was actually about another company, so this can't count against Responsible Travel.

If you'd rather get more customer reviews before making your vacation decision, we think Priceline is a good pick here.

Should you use Responsible Travel?

If you want all the ease of a holiday that's filled with memory making experiences but without the hassle of organizing it yourself, Responsible Travel is great. But on top of that you are also getting the peace of mind knowing that your trip will impact the environment and local community positively – or at least a lot less negatively than most other options. While travel inherently comes with some kind of impact on the environment, Responsible Travel does its best to acknowledge we, as humans, want to travel and minimizes the negatives of it.

This is a great eco-friendly holiday booking tool that works with a clear, informative and concise website and allows you to book with a helpful and friendly travel team of real-world people. It's not the cheapest but in terms of value you get what you pay for. If you just want cheap at any cost, something like CheapTickets will serve you well.

Sustainability and Travel: What Companies Should Know for 2022 and Beyond

Accenture + Skift

Accenture + Skift

December 9th, 2021 at 10:00 AM EST

Sustainability can no longer be an afterthought for travel companies. Those that make bold moves now to redefine how things work for a reemerging sector have the potential to become industry leaders in an altered world.

This sponsored content was created in collaboration with a Skift partner.

Even before the pandemic threw the travel industry into upheaval, there was mounting pressure for the sector to change its ways of doing business — specifically to prioritize sustainable and responsible practices. The pandemic has only intensified this proposition: Customers, investors, employees, and government regulators are all sending the message that companies need to strive for a higher standard than ever before when it comes to delivering positive change and reducing their impact on the climate.

New Imperatives for Corporate Responsibility

Simply put, travel companies no longer have the luxury of maintaining business as usual. They need to deliver on the promise of a sustainable travel sector. Fortunately, there are a number of benefits that travel companies stand to gain in doing so. Increasingly, customers are making purchasing and loyalty decisions based on the brands and experiences that align with their sustainability values. According to research from Accenture , some 66 percent of consumers said they are ramping up their sustainable or ethical purchasing, and 74 percent reported choosing where to shop based on values and ethical corporate practices.

Becoming more sustainable has business operation imperatives as well: New ways of thinking about meeting standards often result in innovation and creative problem solving, more optimized business models, and stronger outcomes. Additionally, taking such steps can have a big impact on efficiency and cost reduction, as businesses use less resources and smarter supply chains.

Knowing this, it makes sense that pressure is coming from the C-suite. Seventy-three percent of executives agreed that “becoming a truly sustainable and responsible business” is a high priority in the coming years, and investors are putting the topic of sustainability higher on the agenda than ever before. Accenture found that there was a 28 percent increase in investor signatories in 2020 to the UN’s Principles for Responsible Investment.

And it’s not just company leaders that are considering such business practices. Employees are increasingly leaning on their companies to act more responsibly. Sixty-five percent believe organizations should be responsible for leaving their people “net better off” through work.

There’s also rising pressure from governments and regulators on companies to take actionable steps to reduce their climate impact. Regulations are only likely to get stricter and implemented at a faster pace, which means that companies that consider tomorrow‘s regulations today will be ahead of the game.

“The pressure from stakeholders — meaning from the customers, governments and regulators, and investors — is clearly much stronger now than it was,” said Jesko Neuenburg, global lead for travel & aviation sustainability at Accenture. “Whereas sustainability was often a long-tail discussion topic on CEO agendas prior to the pandemic, it’s now in all of the conversations taking place. It’s one of the top three topics for almost any CEO.”

What Makes a Responsible Travel Company?

While the phrase “responsible travel company” has often been tossed around the industry without a clear definition in the past, businesses are being held to a higher standard than ever before. This means that travel companies that want to prioritize sustainability and truly put responsible practices in place must take tangible steps as travelers get back on the road and corporate leaders rethink their priorities.

As Accenture frames it, a responsible travel company is one that has a clear environmental strategy to achieve net-zero emissions and zero waste, a social action plan to increase diversity, inclusion, and community well-being, and a governance structure that embeds sustainability across the core business and links executive compensation to meaningful progress on sustainability metrics.

For example, in the environmental realm, travel companies can put carbon reduction and offsetting programs, circular economy and waste management, water and energy saving, and renewable energy programs in place. Under the social category, paying more attention to issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the social impact travel companies have on the communities they do business in are now a must. And under the umbrella of governance, creating ambitious targets around carbon emissions, improving labor conditions and pay equity, and tying leadership compensation systems to sustainability metrics are ways travel companies can make a concrete difference.

Underlying all of this is putting the right technologies in place and smart data to use. This could mean applying ‘carbon intelligence’ to help companies understand, report on, and actively manage their carbon footprint; migrating business operations toward green cloud operators; using sustainable procurement hubs that identify suppliers with ethical practices; or implementing carbon calculators that can help travelers make informed choices and assist corporate travel planners in sticking to carbon emission targets.

In “ A Net Zero Roadmap for Travel & Tourism ,” a report created by World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Accenture that outlines the current state of carbon emissions in the sector and proposes realistic targets and steps to decarbonization, 42 percent of the travel and tourism businesses analyzed currently had publicly announced climate targets.

While this is a promising start, the report further calls on businesses to increase their ambitions to achieve net-zero by — or even before — 2050. It lays out five steps to do so, which include: setting the right baselines and emission targets to achieve individual and sector goals; monitoring results and reporting progress; collaborating within and across industries; providing finance and investment required for the transition; and raising awareness and building capacities on climate.

Accenture Ramps Up Its Sustainability Commitments

Sustainability is increasingly becoming an indispensable part of any corporate agenda, and companies are taking ambitious steps to confront the threat of climate change.

In October 2020, Accenture announced new commitments to sustainability, including achieving net-zero emissions, moving to zero waste, and develop plans to reduce the impact of flooding, drought, and water scarcity in high-risk areas by 2025. Additionally, in September 2021, Accenture joined 60 companies in the World Economic Forum’s Clean Skies for Tomorrow Coalition , with a goal to accelerate the supply and use of sustainable aviation fuel to reach 10 percent of the global jet aviation fuel supply by 2030.

The near-complete halt of travel for a time, combined with the explosion of digital tools to allow for remote work in its stead, also redefined how the company views its business travel and how it affects the climate. “Corporations are certainly a lot more mindful now about how much they travel, why they travel, and how they arrange their trips,” said Neuenburg.

Helen Hickson, managing director of global mobility at Accenture, agreed that having a clear purpose for travel will be key moving forward: “We’re creating new travel guidelines and tools for our people, enabling them to make responsible and climate-smart travel decisions, making every trip truly worth it,” she explained.

When employees do travel for work, Accenture’s Aviation Carbon Calculator allows them to view the specific carbon footprint for any direct flight, anywhere in the world. Travelers and those planning employee travel can make informed decisions with this type of information at their fingertips. “It’s not just an average emissions number for a flight from Frankfurt to London,” said Neuenburg. “It’s actually that specific flight, on that specific aircraft type, with a statistically likely number of passengers and amount of cargo for that aircraft.”

These more recent goals add to the steps Accenture was already taking to reduce its environmental impact, including signing the UN Global Compact’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C Pledge, reducing its emissions in line with its existing science-based target, and committing to RE100’s global initiative to use 100 percent renewable electricity by 2023.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that sustainability can no longer be an afterthought for travel companies. Being creative — yet pragmatic — in order to put responsible business practices in place is the only way forward. The strategic choices being made and actions being taken now will lay the groundwork for long-term success ahead.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. From the capital to Siberia 30 Indian travel companies visited Moscow and Tyumen

Delhi, India (NewsVoir) • Representatives of 30 Indian travel companies visited Moscow to learn about a new tourism project • Russian holidays: From the capital of Russia to the capital of Siberia” and establish business contacts with representatives of the Russian tourism industry The project “Russian holidays: From the capital of Russia to the capital of Siberia” was presented at a B2B session organized jointly by the Moscow City Tourism Committee and Aeroflot on 31st August 2023. As part of the project, Indian travelers will have the opportunity to discover the beautiful sights of Moscow and the mysteries of Siberia, explore the Siberian capital, Tyumen, soak in thermal springs, and try local cooking. Members of the Indian delegation participated in over 800 negotiations that took place between companies, thus significantly expanding the number of potential service providers and the range of options available for Indian tourists. Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee said, “Meetings like this enable us to tell our colleagues from abroad about tourism products and introduce Indian travel companies to what the capital has to offer. Indian tour operators traditionally highlight the developed hotel and exhibition center infrastructure of the Russian capital, and consider it important that Moscow tourism operators are familiar with the tastes of Indian tourists and the specific demands of the Indian market. I am confident that the strengthening and development of cooperation between travel companies in our countries can help increase the number of Indian tourists who discover Moscow and other Russian cities. This is a fine opportunity to combine two regions that offer a wealth of sights and activities.” The representatives from Indian tourism companies expressed that their visit had opened up new avenues for bringing more Indian tourists to Russia. They expressed confidence that the number of Indian tourists would steadily increase, especially with the assistance of the new simplified visa regime. Jay Saraogi, Director of HolidayTripster said, “Until recently it was expensive and took a long time to get a Russian visa. But now our tourists can get a visa in 4 days and stay in Russia for 16 days. In the past, we worked with a small group of Russian tourism operators. In the capital, we were able to extend our contact networks and I am now sure that, whatever the client’s request, I can find a suitable tour.” Mahid Mangwani, Director of TravelCanvas stated, “We have been doing business in Russia since 2016. I always recommend my clients to visit Moscow – It has great infrastructure, spectacular buildings, a highly developed and convenient public transport system, clean roads, and high standards of driving. And I am glad that now Indian tourists will be able to learn more about both Moscow and Siberia. I am sure that these destinations will be popular with our tourists.” Indian tourism operators pointed out several advantages of Moscow as a destination, including its high standards of hospitality and safety, one of the world's most beautiful metro systems, a diverse cultural scene, vibrant nightlife, and delicious cuisine. Pankaj Sharma, Branch Manager at Akbar Group said, “Since food holds significant importance for Indian tourists when traveling abroad, it's worth noting that Moscow boasts a wide array of Indian restaurants that serve authentic cuisine. I highly recommend our tourists to consider visiting Russia for this reason.” Moscow provides visitors with numerous opportunities for cultural tourism and the chance to enjoy nature as well. The capital has over 10,000 theatres, museums, libraries, parks, cinemas and concert halls. In the last 10 years, around 900 parks and green spaces have been modernized. The city also has a whopping 18,500 cafes and catering establishments, including Indian restaurants. For those seeking cityscape views, there are several options in Moscow, including riding the Moscow cable car, visiting the observation decks of skyscrapers, exploring the hanging bridge at Zaryadye Park, and checking out viewpoints in the city center and other areas of the capital.
