Santa Cruz de Tenerife is still pretty much a city for the island's residents and the tourists rarely make it up here. This means that the city is laid back, chilled and you can find lots of bars and restaurants that are filled only with residents, which means that here you'll taste some authentic food and tapas.

The carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, often referred to as the main Tenerife carnival is the second largest carnival in the world after the one in Rio. Each year the carnival has another theme and people get dressed up and party on the streets of Santa Cruz.

If you have accommodation in the south it's recommended that you travel to the capital by bus, as the city will be extremely busy and you will find nowhere to park your car. During the carnival days, there will be special buses from all over Tenerife, so it's safer to choose this option if you want to participate in the Tenerife Carnival.

In Santa Cruz, you will find all the shops and big brands usually available in Spain, from Primark (which is situated in the Meridiano Shopping Center) to Carrefour, Alcampo (Auchan), El Corte Ingles and even IKEA.

At this market you will find lots of options of local food: fruits and vegetables and other foodie souvenirs.

Even the building itself is a nice place to visit in Santa Cruz, with its colonial style and interior yard. The market is open every day from 9 am to 2:30 PM, except for Mondays when it's closed.

Calle del Castillo is the main pedestrian street and one of the central places to go in Santa Cruz if you're looking to do some shopping. There are lots of shops and also beautiful buildings where you can find a place to sit down and take a break.

We always like to discover a new city by walking aimlessly around its streets. This way we also found a small local restaurant, that was filled only with locals. They were only serving Menu del dia - a special lunch menu, where you can choose from a few options. For around 8 Euros we had a filling lunch, which also included a big bottle of water and a coffee at the end.

After our lunch in Santa Cruz, we continued our walk towards Plaza de Espana. As far as we learned, this place will be transformed in the nearby future to improve the city's waterfront.

If you cross the square you will find some stairs that will take you to the remains of Castillo de San Cristobal, which you can visit for free. It's a nice way to learn more about the history of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the island itself.

Our walks also took us to park Garcia Sanabria, which is a rather small park and it's not usually visited by tourists. However, we enjoyed our walk here and we admired the beautiful flowers that were in bloom in January , although we were in the north of the island.

A lovely shaded square in the center of Santa Cruz, with a beautiful pavilion in the middle of the square. 

It's a good place to stop for a short break during your walks through the streets of Tenerife's capital city.

This square has recently been renovated and it looks absolutely charming, with a romantic Spanish feel, due to the ceramic benches and fountain, which is located in the middle of the square (the square is actually a roundabout, situated very close to Parque Garcia Santabria).

If you want to visit the building of the Auditorio, which is designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava, you can arrive here by car, as the place has its own parking of around 100 places (you will pay around 0,7 euros/hour).

This is a beautiful complex designed by the famous Cesar Manrique, with lots of pools and beautiful views towards Auditorio de Tenerife.

The entrance to the park is very cheap, around 2,5 euros for adults so it's nice to go in just to see the installations and have a cup of coffee while admiring the place.

The Palmetum project is truly unique and you should come to see it if you're visiting Santa Cruz.

The place where Palmetum is located today used to be the city's rubbish dump and it took a lot of years of hard work to transform it into the beautiful garden that it is today. You'll see palm trees from around the world and also other types of plants (depends on the time of the year when you visit).

A walk through the Palmetum will also offer beautiful views towards the ocean or towards the Auditorio and Parque Maritimo Cesar Manrique, as all these 3 points of interest are located in the same area.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife also has museums that you can visit and the most important one, which should not be missed, is The Museum of Nature and Man (Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre). There are also other museums in Santa Cruz and there's also a Castle Route organized, where you can visit several of the museums in the capital of Tenerife.

The Military Museum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is FREE to visit. 

Here you can see exhibits of arms & uniforms and you can learn more info about the conquest of Tenerife. So if you're here on a rainy day and you're looking for some indoor activities, this is one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and it won't cost you anything either.

Had potential to be a very interesting introduction to the capital, but it was spoilt by the infrequency of the buses. We waited about 45 mins for the first hop on, waited an hour in sight of the Tren while driver had lunch, and waited another 50 mins for a later hop on. Unsurprisingly the service was little used by experienced sightseers.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of Tenerife. It is on the north-east coast of the island. Santa Cruz de Tenerife was named one of the best five places to live in the world by 'The Guardian' newpaper in 2012.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island's capital and shared capital of the Canary Island. Its deep natural harbour has historically led to a period of wealth and many fine historic buildings can be seen in the city. Even today the harbour is one of the busiest in Spain and is also an important harbour for the cruise ships which visit Tenerife from around the world.

Santa Cruz's main beach is 'Las Teresitas' which is a fine golden beach courtesy of millions of tonnes of sand from the Sahara desert. With palm trees and a back-drop of the Anaga mountains it is consisdered the most beautiful beach on Tenerife.

In the town itself head for Plaza de Espana near the harbour. Between here and Plaza de Candelaria is an excellent shopping area and Calle de Castillo is the main shopping street. If you are looking for some lively nightlife then head down to Avenida Anaga on the waterfront.

The Plaza de Espana is the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and is the biggest Plaza on the Canary Islands.  The square has a large artificial lake and is very attractive and a great place to pass some time.

Nearby is the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is home to the Auditorio, the most iconic building of Tenerife. The Auditorio de Tenerife is Tenerife's modern auditorium designed by Santiago Calatrava and has a style reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House. Its distinctive shape has been designed to look like the sails of a yacht. It is now one of Tenerife's most famous buildings.

Also by the port is one of Tenerife's water parks, the Parque Maritimo Cesar Manrique. This is an area of about 22000 square meters of saltwater pools and associated facilities designed by Canaries architect Cezar Manrique.

Next to this is the Palmetum of Tenerife which is a large botanical garden and contains one of the biggest collections of palm trees in the world. From here you also get some lovely views of the sea. There is also another excellent park in Santa Cruz, the Parque Garcia Sanabria with gardens and fountains and it is a pleasant place to relax.

One of Santa Cruz de Tenerife's main monuments is the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion, a church which dates back to the 16th century and was one of the first churches to be built on Tenerife. It is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of Santa Cruz but it is not a cathedral. The only cathedral on Tenerife is the Cathedral of La Laguna.

The Iglesia de San Fransisco contains a number of artworks and is considered to be the best example of Baroque architecture in the Canary Islands.

Also worth visiting is the Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa which is a lively bazaar and food market and worth heading for in the mornings.

If you're not sure when to visit Santa Cruz then consider carnival time in February. The Carnival of Santa Cruz is the biggest in Spain and the second biggest in the world after that of Rio de Janiero. The carnival is such a popular and important one that it is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. It is already a 'Fiesta of International Tourist Interest'.

Museums in Santa Cruz

The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre contains the cannon which shot off the arm of Admiral Nelson! The museum houses collections of archeology and biology and is famous for its Guanche mummies.

San Cristobal de La Laguna , often called La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be the cultural capital of Tenerife.

Top tips for getting around Tenerife, from sky-high road trips to coastal cycle rides

Tenerife is an island, but it’s a big one, particularly when you venture off the autopista (highway) and onto the narrow roads that rollercoaster into the remote mountains rippling across the north. 

If you’re planning a road trip, you’ll be in your element on Tenerife, breezing through otherworldly landscapes with the volcanic peak of Teide hovering on the horizon, or feeling your stomach flip as you career along cliff-edge roads with the Atlantic raging far below. 

Renting a car makes it easier to reach off-the-radar places, but you can get around Tenerife in plenty of other ways. Buses dash between the big towns and resorts for small change, and inexpensive shuttles make airport transfers a breeze. If you want to go greener, rent a bike or an e-bike to see the island in glorious slow motion. 

Here are eight of the best ways to get around on your visit to Tenerife.

Rent a car to reach the beach and Tenerife's volcanic heights

With its cinematic volcanic landscapes and coastlines, Tenerife can be a joy to explore by car, but twisty roads and tailgating buses in the mountainous north can put even the most confident drivers on edge.

The island is pretty easy to navigate, especially if you stick to the big roads. The TF-1 highway links the capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife  in the northeast to Costa Adeje in the southwest, while the TF-5 highway connects Santa Cruz to Puerto de la Cruz in the north. But more fun – and gear-crunching, camera-grabbing drama – awaits on the roads that swing around hairpin bends up to Teide National Park (TF-21), Masca (TF-436) and the Anaga Rural Park (TF-12). Avoid peak season if you don’t want to be harassed by impatient bus and coach drivers. The highways also can get jam-packed at rush hour. 

Finding a free parking space, particularly near the beach, can be a headache, especially in high season when roads are full of cars trying to cram into too few spaces (make sure you don’t park on any yellow lines). Paid parking generally costs around €1.80 an hour, which adds up over the course of a vacation, so it’s worth seeing if your accommodations offer parking. Never leave valuables in cars, as petty thieves have been known to pounce quickly in towns and resorts.

All the major car rental companies have desks at Tenerife South Airport, with car rental costing a reasonable €15 a day on average. If you want to up your eco game, Cicar rents out electric cars, and Chargemap lists e-vehicle charging points around the island.

Take the quick route to your resort in a taxi or shuttle

Ride-hailing services like Uber have yet to reach Tenerife, but official white taxis with meters are readily available at airports, in resorts and at taxi ranks in bigger towns. If you want to call one, good options include Servitaxi Tenisur in the south and 24-hour Official Taxi island-wide. Make sure you get an estimated cost for your journey before hopping in. A short 15-minute ride – from Tenerife South Airport to Playa de las Americas, for instance – will set you back around €26.

If you're traveling solo or as a couple, it’s cheaper to jump aboard one of the many shuttle buses that ply the island, doing the airport and door-to-door resort rounds. Some also offer affordable private transfers. Reputable companies include Holiday Extras and Hoppa . You can expect to pay as little as €4.50 for a 45-minute transfer from Tenerife South Airport to Costa Adeje.

Hop on a public bus for a budget-friendly spin around the island

No desire to drive? You don’t have to: Tenerife has an efficient bus service that covers a sizable chunk of the island. Titsa  runs guaguas – pronounced wa-was – or public buses. You can find timetables, routes and a handy journey planner on the website. 

If you intend to travel a lot by bus, invest in a Ten+ daily or weekly travel pass, which cost €10 and €50 respectively. You can buy contactless versions at ticket machines and bus stations or use the ten+Móvil app. 

Ride the tram from the old capital to the new

The most exciting way to get from La Laguna to Santa Cruz is by tram . The journey takes 40 minutes, and at €1.35, one-way tickets cost next to nothing. The tram runs from 6am to midnight Monday through Friday, and around the clock on weekends. Tickets can be purchased at machines and service centers, and refilled at newsstands and kiosks.

Get on your bike to breeze along the coast or climb to Mt Teide

Tenerife has taken off as a cycling destination recently, with  routes crisscrossing the island and a mild climate making it possible to get on your bike year round. Pro road cyclists often train here in the winter, limbering up on the phenomenal climbs to Mt Teide.

You can easily rent road bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes in all the main resorts and towns. Expect to pay between €15 and €35 per day, depending on how fancy the wheels are. On the south coast, Free Motion and Bike Point are both good bets; the latter has put together a great selection of GPS routes  and offers guided bike tours, both on and off-road. Cycling in Tenerife ’s tours swing from a road-bike tour to Masca to a downhill MTB trip at Teide.

Stretch your legs on seafront promenades and mountain trails

Whether it’s to be a sunset stroll along a wave-hammered seafront promenade or a hike into the fantasy laurel forests of the north, Tenerife is a terrific island for walking. Yes, you’ll need wheels to get from A to B, but you can break up the journey by stretching your legs on the paths threading along the coast and into the mountains.

For day or multi-day hikes, Rother and Cicerone publish walking guides that will point you in the right direction. The Tenerife Topo Maps app is also helpful if you plan to stray beyond the beaten track.

Accessible travel in Tenerife

Tenerife has made great progress to become more accessible in recent years. Modern south-coast resort towns have often been designed with mobility needs in mind, including well-equipped hotels with ramps, wheelchair-accessible rooms and traffic-free seafront promenades.

Shuttle companies such as Holiday Extras and cab companies like Official Taxi Tenerife offer wheelchair-accessible transport at no extra cost. Newer public buses are equipped with ramps, and the tram between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna is accessible. Why e-bike is my favorite way to travel in Tenerife

Tenerife is an island with a heck of a lot of altitude, with roads whipping up from the coast to 2000m (6562ft) above sea level, where the stark, rocky, red desert–like landscapes of Teide National Park make you feel like you’ve landed on Mars.

You can blaze up here by car, but to really see the landscape unfold – from ocean to pine forest to rugged, barren mountain – an e-bike is the way to go. It’s possible to road bike up here if you’re super fit, but for everyone else, an e-bike takes the sweat out of the grueling climb to the top, allowing you to focus on those sensational views.

Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos is one of the most popular tourist centres in the south of Tenerife , and has become known for its sandy beaches. It is a town of about 21,000 permanent residents (2015) that is 2 km southeast of Playa de las Américas and 5 km southeast of Costa Adeje , but it is the most authentic of these three, where locals mix with tourists.

Los Cristianos offers a full holiday experience, with two sandy beaches, a multitude of bars and restaurants, and its year-round sunny climate. There is accommodation for different budgets, including hotels, self-catering apartments and timeshare resorts. There is also a wealth of excursions focused around the town's busy port including dolphin and whale watching as well as game fishing trips and party cruises.

The town has attracted British expatriates who emigrated either permanently or semi-permanently to escape the cold British winters. English is as widely spoken as Spanish, and there are British-owned bars, restaurants, shops and services aimed predominantly at the tourist sector.

From Tenerife South Airport [dead link] buses 343 [dead link] , 450 [dead link] , 111 [dead link] and 40 [dead link] run to and from Los Cristianos.

From the island's capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, take bus 111 [dead link] . In addition there is the much faster and direct 110 [dead link] , but it only calls at 28.067777 -16.72639 1 Magma bus stop, which however is quickly reach from Los Cristianos by another local bus.

By car [ edit ]

The island motorway TF-1 comes from Santa Cruz , about 70 km away. It continues north towards the Teno mountains and Santiago del Teide .

Aeroporto Tenerife Sud (TFS) is only 15 minutes away from Los Cristianos. From the northern airport the region can be reached via the TF-1 motorway, which also passes the capital Santa Cruz on the way to Los Cristianos.

Everything is walkable if you bring enough time. Walking to Costa Adeje can be a nice stroll during the day.

In Los Cristianos you will find a wide selection of restaurants and bars, where typical dishes of the island were offered as Conejo en salmorejo, carne de cabra or stew canario, and prawns calamari or traditional paella, as well as Spanish food of course.
