Great tour of a very small portion of India. Our guide Anu was awesome! I took a tour as a solo female traveler and was so glad I did. I wouldn’t have wanted to navigate all of that in my own and G Adventures took care of everything.

Fabulous selections of sights to see each day. We upgraded one step for hotels and all had great rooms n staff. Super food buffets n dinners selection for on our own were great. Most guides were very formative and helpful. Our driver Danish really made the trip enjoyable. We would go on another TourRadar in the future.

Uncover India: High Deserts & Markets

An absolutely amazing 2 weeks of incredible sights, scenery and food! Each day was packed full of activities and exciting things to see, and there were lots of optional extras organised by our guide to fill the free time. You get a real feel for the culture - this is not just a tour from one monument to the next, but a dive under the skin of India to experience the real culture and see all sides of the amazing country. We owe a huge thank you to our CEO Dushyant, who was the most amazing guide and helped us to get the most out of our tour. A few things to note - have some money available for the optional extra activities, upgrades on transport (eg we got trains instead of buses to save time) and tipping. Would recommend taking a sleeping bag liner for the night train as the bedding did not look clean. Lots of early mornings so be prepared for that!

India\'s Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure) Tour

India's Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure)

I was a little anxious about this tour as I was a solo female traveler and had read some reviews of not so great experiences. I want to say I had the best time and everything was fantastic! In Delhi I had Alvina as a tour guide and she was knowledgeable and helpful. In Agra I had Ahmit as a tour guide and I have to say he really knew the history as well, especially about the Taj Mahal which was an amazing experience. The last tour guide I had in Jaipur was Bhawani, he was super friendly and knowledgeable as well. The fees to the monuments are not included but it does say that when you book it. I already knew I would have to tip each guide and the driver as it is the culture here to do that but they were all appreciative about it and it was well deserving. I saw some reviews about being taken to the different shops but once again you don't have to buy anything and if you want to skip them you can ask your guide and there is no issues. Hotels were great especially the last one in Jaipur, it was a homestay with great hospitality. Last but not least thankyou to my driver Arvind! He made everything so smooth and comfortable. I can't express how much he made the trip so much better with his kindness and knowledge. Thankyou so much Arvind!

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan Tour

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan

Overall it was an amazing experience. We truly got a feel for India. The itinerary was filled with historic sights and a varied cities. Here’s the great things about this trip: Every place we went there was a guide waiting for us. Most of them spoke good English and were very knowledgeable. You do pay for entrance fees to every site,(usually 600 INR) and you need to tip the guides The price of the tour was a great value. We had compared many tours and felt this was the best We were a group of 3 women traveling together and we always felt safe. Though we didn’t request it, it ended up as a private tour, the 3 of us and our driver. We had our own rooms and there was no extra charge for this. We were able to add extra side trips to the itinerary. There was a good variety of things to see: palaces, forts, temples. We were also able to adjust the itinerary to places we did/ did not want to visit Our driver Takhat Singh, was incredible. He looked out for us from the very beginning. He gave us practical advice, ensured our safety, and went out of his way to accommodate suggestions we had. He was very knowledgeable about every place we went and shared anecdotal information. His English was very good. He truly made our trip! Negative Some of the hotels were located very far from the attractions requiring extra driving back/ forth thru the city Although we set up the trip months ahead of time, we did not receive specifics, like hotels and name of driver, till a week or les before. We added additional dates and had to ask repeatedly to get information about where we were staying. We did not have a consistent, direct contact at Kk. Every time we sent messages through Tour Radar we were communicating with different people. Guides strongly dissuaded us from purchasing anything in markets, and would take us to higher end pricey shops. There were some things that would have been good to know ahead of time We felt a lack of communication on specifics of the tour. It would have been helpful to know that we had to pay all entrance fees, and the tipping structure of India, At the end of tours, the guides would often take you to merchants under the guise of a demonstration. We felt discomfort and pressure to then purchase from that vendor. There is very little downtime. The drive time between towns is often long. Each day was filled with touring. Some built in downtime would be helpful. This may mean that you add an extra day or two. Overall we felt that KK Holidays provided a great format for exploring northern India. We would highly recommend this trip.

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

World Travel Experiences - organized my 8-day trip in India, which included visits through Delhi, Agra with the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, and Varanasi. Overall, this felt like a perfect introduction to India, with each city offering completely different experiences in a concise manner. In addition, the tour operator offered additional options in each city that further tailored the experience based on individual preferences. Just a great, organized set-up where it felt that you were able to enjoy the cultural experience - while at the same time having the appropriate amount of time to refresh/reset for a holiday. The value/cost of the tour - from service, experience, hotels, etc - was great.

Our Golden Triangle tour has been very nice. Our guide Aijaz has been really helpful and very accommodating especially with our young children. We had a really lovely and enjoyable time.

Ah, it's so hard to choose! What are the best tourist places in India? A lot of the time, it comes down to personal preference. However, some places to visit in India remain perennially more popular than others. These are among the best destinations in India.

Want to know more about India's top destinations? Take a look at this India travel planner and this guide to the top India tourist places by region. If you'd like to explore beyond India's popular tourist attractions, here are 12 of the best places to visit in India off the beaten track to inspire you!

Best for Monuments: Delhi

Most first time travelers to India usually land in Delhi, India's capital city. It can be quite a culture shock . The city is primed to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists. However, bear with it! Delhi's top attractions feature spellbinding mosques, forts, and monuments left over from the Mughal rulers that once occupied the city. Many of these are set in beautiful landscaped gardens that are perfect for relaxing. And the crumbling old city of Old Delhi is a fascinating, albeit chaotic, place to explore. Plan your trip there with this Delhi city guide.

Best Iconic: Taj Mahal

Nora Carol Photography/Getty Images

A part of India's popular Golden Triangle tourist circuit , Agra is best known for the Taj Mahal. Enough said really. It's India's most iconic monument and one of the top historical attractions.   For that reason, it's impossible to leave it off the list. (While you're there, why not get off the beaten track and visit some attractions around Agra as well?). Make sure you read this comprehensive guide to Agra and the Taj Mahal before you go.

Best Temple: Golden Temple

Amritsar is home to one of India's most notable landmarks -- the Golden Temple. It was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh guru. It’s the spiritual capital of the Sikhs and gained its name, meaning "Holy Pool of Nectar", from the body of water around the Golden Temple. The exquisite Golden Temple attracts pilgrims from all over the world and the number of visitors it gets rivals that of the Taj Mahal! It looks particularly arresting at night when it’s beautifully lit up, with its imposing gold dome illuminated. This guide to Amritsar and Golden Temple has more details.

Best Regal Splendor: Udaipur

Ah, Udaipur! Famed city of lakes and palaces, and the most romantic city in India. A must-visit for the ability to immerse yourself in regal splendor. The royal family has converted much of the sprawling City Palace into a museum , housing priceless memorabilia. It provides an extraordinary opportunity to take a look into their lives. Another attractive thing about Udaipur is that it offers great value! There are so many inexpensive yet atmospheric hotels overlooking the lake to stay in. Or, stay in the City Palace Complex itself, at the Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel or Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel.

Best Ruins: Hampi

Hampi is, not surprisingly, one of the most popular places to visit in Karnataka. There you'll find the captivating ruins of Vijayanagar, the last capital of one of the greatest Hindu kingdoms in not only the state but in India’s history. The ruins are intriguingly intermingled with large boulders that rear up all over the landscape. An incredible energy can be found at Hampi. Its laid-back vibe attracts plenty of travelers who like to stay a while and chill out. The New York Times included Hampi on its list of 52 Places to Go in 2019 , so get there fast before everyone else! Have a read of this handy Hampi travel guide for more information.

Best for History and Architecture: Ajanta and Ellora Caves

TripSavvy / Anna Haines

Among the top caves in India , the ancient and awe-inspiring Ajanta and Ellora caves have been hand-carved into hillside rock quite in the middle of nowhere near Aurangabad in northern Maharashtra. These caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are 34 of them at Ellora, dating from between the 6th and 11th centuries AD. They're a mixture of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves. The caves at Ajanta are all Buddhist caves. There are 29 of them, dating from the 2nd century BC to 6th century AD. Words can't describe how magnificent they all are.

Best for Spirituality: Varanasi

Varanasi, one of the top spiritual places in India, is a city quite unlike any other. This mystical holy city openly reveals its rituals along the many riverside ghats, which are used for everything from bathing to burning the bodies of the dead. Indeed, Varanasi is a confronting and rather dirty city (although it has been cleaned up a lot in recent years). However, it provides invaluable insight into ancient traditions in India. Two highlights are wandering along the riverside ghats and attending the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony. Here's a Varanasi travel guide to help you plan your trip.

Best for Culture: Kolkata

WIN-Initiative/Getty Images

Kolkata , the capital of West Bengal, is a fascinating but underrated city that unfortunately all too often gets overlooked by tourists. Those who are most keen on history, experiential travel, and day-to-day life will appreciate what it has to offer though. Look past its crumbling buildings and you'll discover delicious distinctive Bengali cuisine , interesting places to shop , diverse neighborhoods , and engaging heritage . The city's biggest festival, Durga Puja , is worth experiencing as well! Take a look at these evocative photos of Kolkata for inspiration.

Best for South Indian Culture: Madurai

Olaf Kruger/Getty Images

Madurai, in Tamil Nadu , has the most impressive temple in South India -- the Meenakshi Temple . If you only see one of South India's temples , the Meenakshi Temple should be it. The city of Madurai is more than 4,000 years old, and has remained a major center for Tamil culture and learning. The 12 day Chithirai Festival , featuring a re-enacted celestial wedding of God and Goddess, is held in Madurai during April each year. Here's what else to see and do in Madurai.

Best for Tribal Culture: Northeast India

Tourists are often surprised to discover that there are many different tribes in India . In fact, along with Africa, India has the largest tribal population in the world. Many of them inhabit India's remote Northeast region and they generally welcome visitors. One of the best ways to experience their culture is to attend one of their tribal festivals , such as the renowned Hornbill Festival. Otherwise, reputable local companies such as Greener Pastures and Holiday Scout conduct responsible tribal tours.

Best for Relaxation: Kerala Backwaters

One of the must-do things in Kerala , a trip in a houseboat along the palm-fringed Kerala backwaters is so tranquil and relaxing. The lush green landscape, and houses and villages that line the backwaters make a journey along these waterways seem like a journey through another world. Freshly cooked Indian food and chilled beer on board the boat make the experience even more enjoyable. Don't miss it! Here's how to best visit the Kerala Backwaters.

Best for Beaches: Goa

Westend61/Getty Images

India's top beach destination, Goa lures visitors with the promise of parties and lazy days by the sea. However, there's more to Goa than just hedonism. The state also offers an eclectic blend of history, nature, culture , and adventure activities . It's divided into north and south Goa, with the north being more developed and action-packed. If you're looking for quiet beaches, head south! However, each beach has its own character. This  Goa beach guide will help you choose the beach that's right for you. Check out these gorgeous Goa beach huts as well.

Best for Wildlife: Kanha National Park

India has so many national parks, it's hard to choose the best wildlife destination. However, the jungles of Madhya Pradesh do stand out, Kanha National Park in particular. It's one of the largest national parks in India and it provided the setting for Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, The Jungle Book . The park is highly regarded for its research and conservation programs. Numerous activities, such as nature walks, are possible in the buffer zone as well as safaris into the core area twice a day. Tiger sightings are regular there too! Want to visit more than one national park in Madhya Pradesh ? Bandhavgarh is also popular.

Best for Adventure: Spiti

Himanshu Khagta/Getty Images

The high-altitude alpine desert landscape of remote Spiti, in Himachal Pradesh, provides ample options for adventure enthusiasts. These include mountain biking, hiking and trekking, tracking wildlife, and yak safaris. Spiti's remarkable landscape is scattered with small villages and monasteries, and enclosed by soaring peaks crowned with snow. Take a look at these spectacular photos of the Spiti Valley . Spiti can be reached by road from Manali or Shimla. This ultimate Spiti travel planner will help you organize your trip.

Best Offbeat: Kutch Region of Gujarat

Referred to as India's "Wild West", the Kutch region of Gujarat is an immense stretch of largely barren and harsh desert landscape bordering Pakistan. Much of Kutch consists of seasonal wetlands known as the Great Rann of Kutch (famous for its salt desert) and smaller Little Rann of Kutch (famous for its Wild Ass Sanctuary ). The region is also celebrated for the vibrant handicrafts made by its talented artisan villagers, and the seaside port town of Mandvi where there's a remarkable 400 year-old ship building yard.

Best Up and Coming: Odisha

Odisha has tremendous potential as a tourist destination and will undoubtedly attract more visitors when adequate infrastructure is developed. Until then, you can enjoy the serenity in this lesser-known state on the east coast of India. Attractions include the unusual Konark Sun Temple , massive annual Ratha Jatra festival in Puri , the Diamond Triangle of sacred Buddhist sites , the wetlands at Mangalajodi where migratory birds can be seen close-up, handicraft villages , classical music and dance festivals , and a multitude of ancient temples . Still not sure if you want to go there? Here are even more places to visit in Odisha and the capital city Bhubaneswar .

The Ultimate India Travel Bucket List: 35 Ideas

India travel bucket list

Are you looking for the best travel bucket list experiences in India? Then you have come to the right place.

India is one of the cheapest countries in Asia and there are plenty of fun and adventurous things to do in this country.

With experiences in the desert of Rajasthan and the Himalayan Mountains in the North of the country to the less-explored South of India , I hope this list will give you some inspiration for your next Indian adventure.

I didn’t do all of these things myself yet, but the ones I did do (22/35) were amazing and I can’t wait to tick off the rest!

India Travel Bucket List: 35 Amazing Experiences

1. walk between tea plantations ✓.

Tea plantations in Kerala

India is one of the largest tea producers in the world, so it comes as no surprise that there are quite some tea plantations in the country.

Some of the places that are most famous for their tea plantations are Munnar in Kerala, Kolukkumalai in Tamil Nadu, Darjeeling in West Bengal and the state of Assam in Northeastern India.

2. Spend some time in Auroville ✓

Auroville, India

Auroville is an experimental township in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the South of India. It’s close to the colonial city of Pondicherry .

It was founded by the French Mira Alfassa, who is also known as “The Mother”, in 1968. She created Auroville based on the vision of the Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo.

According to The Mother, Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.

Over 3,000 residents of 59 different countries live in Auroville today, and it’s quite a unique place to visit!

3. Celebrate Holi ✓

Celebrating Holi in India: A travel bucket list experience

Holi, the Festival of Colours , is India’s most colourful celebration. It’s celebrated every year in early March by smearing bright colours on each other’s faces.

During Holi, people celebrate the start of Spring and the victory of good over evil. It starts with the burning of the Hindu demon Holika the night before the festival.

I had a great time celebrating Holi in Varanasi , however, after a while, people started getting really drunk, and it was not much fun anymore.

4. Take an overnight sleeper train ✓

Taking the overnight sleeper train in India is the perfect way to experience how the locals travel and save some money at the same time.

Although it’s true that it is exhausting, this is a unique experience and you will probably make new friends on the way!

5. See Jaipur, the “pink city” ✓

Hawa Mahal in India

Jaipur, the so-called “Pink City” is the capital of Rajasthan, India’s desert state, and it’s full of interesting places to visit.

From the stunning Hawa Mahal (which is one of my favourite buildings ever) and the spectacular Amer Fort to the lesser-known Monkey Temple and the photogenic Patrika Gate , there are plenty of amazing things to see and do in Jaipur .

6. Go on a road trip to Leh, Ladakh

The state of Ladakh, in the far North of India, is a dream destination, home to some of the highest mountain tops in the world. You will find breathtaking landscapes, mesmerizing lakes and mystical monasteries here.

Going on a road trip to Leh, the capital of Ladakh, is a dream for mountain lovers (including me, but I haven’t made it to Ladakh yet)!

7. Visit the Dalai Lama Temple in McLeodGanj ✓

Mcleodganj Dalai Lama Temple

The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, lives in a town called McLeodGanj near Dharamshala, in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

You might actually catch a glimpse of him when you visit his temple, and it’s possible to attend his teachings too. It’s a wonderful experience!

It’s good to know that when you attend his teachings, you won’t see the Dalai Lama in person, but on a screen, though.

8. Eat street food in Delhi ✓

Street food in India

Places like Chawri Bazar and Chandni Chowk are perfect to try some of the best street food in Delhi . The city is home to some delicious dishes like Chole Bhature, Aloo Chat, Ram Laddoo and many, many more.

Delhi is part of the Golden Triangle Tourist Route , which combines this city with Agra and Jaipur – this is a great way to see some of North India’s highlights.

9. See the ceremony at the Wagah Border ✓

Wagah Border Ceremony in Amritsar

The Wagah Border is the only open land border between India and Pakistan, connecting the cities of Amritsar and Lahore . Since 1959, a ceremony called the Wagah Border Ceremony or Beating Retreat Ceremony has been held here every day.

During this ceremony, both Indian and Pakistani soldiers will parade along the road. Then, the flags of both countries will be lowered and the international gates will close.

It’s quite an impressive spectacle with thousands of Indians cheering in the tribunes on the Indian side!

10. Stroll along the ghats in Varanasi ✓

Drone shot of Varanasi

Varanasi , also known as Benaras or Kashi, is India’s holiest city . It’s located by the holy Ganges River, in which pilgrims bathe to wash away their sins. This is also the place where you will be able to attend the Ganga Aarti , a Hindu ritual that’s performed every evening and honours the Ganga River.

But Varanasi is also famous for its cremation ghats. Hindus believe that being cremated by the Ganges will bring them salvation.

You can take a boat ride in Varanasi or simply stroll along its ghats, both are amazing experiences.

All in all, Varanasi is a city unlike any other, this is one of India’s top cultural destinations and it cannot be missed on an Indian travel bucket list.

11. Go to the movies in Mumbai

Movie cinema in Mumbai

Mumbai is the centre of India’s Hindi film industry. It’s also known as Bollywood , and it’s one of the largest film industries in the world.

Although I did visit Mumbai, I didn’t go to the movies as I was on a budget and Mumbai is not the best Indian city for budget travellers.

However, if you have a bit more to spend and you’re in Mumbai for a day (or more), going to the movies is a cool activity!

12. Eat in the world’s largest free kitchen in Amritsar ✓

Golden Temple in Amritsar

The beautiful Golden Temple in Amritsar is the most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs.

Not only is it an interesting place to visit, but it’s also home to the largest community kitchen in the world, the so-called langar. This kitchen serves free food to around 100,000 people every single day.

The beautiful thing about the Golden Temple and Sikhism is that everyone is welcome here, regardless of caste or religion.

13. Take a desert safari in Rajasthan ✓

Sunset at Jaisalmer Thar Desert safari

Spending the night under the stars in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan is at the top of many people’s travel bucket lists for India.

There’s something incredibly magical about the desert and its culture, and watching the sunset over the sand dunes is still one of my favourite experiences in Rajasthan.

The most popular place to go on a desert safari is Jaisalmer , but you can do these from cities like Bikaner, Pushkar and Jodhpur too.

14. Go to an Indian wedding

Indian weddings

If you get invited to an Indian wedding, by all means, GO! It will be an amazing experience.

Most of these are between the months of November and February, as this is seen as an auspicious period in Indian culture.

I haven’t been to an Indian wedding myself yet, but I can’t wait to go to one one day. I got invited to a wedding in Jaipur, but unfortunately, it was a few days after my visa expired.

15. Visit the Rat Temple in Bikaner ✓

India travel bucket list: Visiting the Rat Temple in Bikaner

Yes, you guessed that right – the Rat Temple is a temple dedicated to rats!

The Karni Mata Temple in Deshnoke, a town not so far from Bikaner in Rajasthan, is home to thousands of sacred rats. Approximately 20,000 black rats live here along with a handful of white ones that are said to bring luck if you can spot them.

The Rat Temple may not be a place everyone will enjoy, but it is one of the most unique places I have visited so far and I loved it.

16. Take a boat cruise in the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans is a mangrove forest in the Bay of Bengal, which is spread across the West of India and Bangladesh .

This forest is the largest of its kind and it can be explored by boat. Apart from enjoying the magnificent views along the way, you might also spot a tiger here if you’re lucky!

17. Sail on the backwaters of Alleppey ✓

Backwaters of Alleppey, Kerala

The Backwaters of Alleppey in Kerala are often called “the Venice of the East” and it’s the perfect place to enjoy nature and relax.

With its lush greenery, sparkling rivers and beautiful palm trees, this is an ideal destination for nature lovers and one of my personal favourites in the South of India!

18. Stay in an ashram

If you’re into spirituality, then staying in an ashram is one of these bucket list experiences you cannot miss when in India.

Ashrams are retreats in which you can focus solely on the spiritual aspect of life and concentrate on inner reflection. A typical day in an ashram consists of meditation, yoga and collective readings.

19. Take the oldtimer yellow taxi in Kolkata ✓

Monuments in Kolkata

Kolkata used to be known as “Calcutta”, and this was the capital of India before it was moved to Delhi . This is one of my favourite cities in India, and wait until you see its oldtimer yellow taxis – I was obsessed with them!

Combined with the numerous historical monuments of Kolkata , these cabs will make you feel as if you’re driving through a different era – it’s a unique experience to take one!

20. Go to the Pushkar Camel Fair

The Pushkar Camel Fair is one of the largest camel, horse and cattle fairs in India. It’s held every year around October and November.

Numerous competitions and cultural performances are held here, and farmers from all over Rajasthan will come to Pushkar for this event.

I haven’t crossed this one off my travel bucket list for India yet, as I visited Pushkar at another time, but I would love to go to the Camel Fair one day.

21. Watch the sunrise at the Taj Mahal ✓

Taj Mahal in Agra

The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous landmarks in India , and it’s easy to understand why.

This marble mausoleum was built at the demand of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died after giving birth to their 14th child.

Watching the sunrise over this wonder of the world is an experience you will remember for a lifetime!

22. Light a candle during Diwali

Also known as the Festival of Lights , Diwali is one of the most important Winter festivals in India . During this festival, Hindus, Jains and Sikhs light candles in their homes, in temples and in their offices.

Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, and it’s held every year around the months of October and November.

23. Ride a bike in Spiti Valley ✓

India travel bucket list, riding the bike in Spiti Valley

Spiti Valley, in Himachal Pradesh, is a cold desert full of little villages, monasteries and towering mountain tops.

Riding the bike here is still one of my favourite adventures in India and one I cannot wait to repeat. The scenery along the way is out of this world !

24. Explore Northeast India

Northeast India is home to seven states and it’s known for its beautiful nature and rich culture. This part of the country is quite far from the rest and almost completely landlocked between Bangladesh, China, Bhutan and Myanmar.

I find this part of India very intriguing and hope to visit it later this year!

25. Get lost in Jodhpur, the “Blue City” ✓

Blue houses in jodhpur, India

Jodhpur , Rajasthan’s Blue City, is famous for its magnificent fort, ancient alleys and, as its nickname predicts, blue houses.

One of my favourite things to do in India is to get lost in this city’s alleys and look for the blue houses. They’re incredibly photogenic and wandering around these alleys will make you feel as if you stepped back in time.

>> Read: Where to Find the Blue Houses in Jodhpur (+ Map)

26. Go paragliding in Bir Billing

Bir Billing in the state of Himachal Pradesh is argued to be the best place to go paragliding in India. Its take-off point is the highest one in Asia and the second-highest one in the entire world.

You will want to visit Bir Billing between October and June for the best paragliding experience.

27. Admire the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai ✓

Temples are famous about India

The beautiful Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai is one of India’s oldest and most important Hindu temples. It’s estimated that the temple that first stood on these grounds dates back to the 1st century.

The current Meenakshi Amman Temple was built in the 16th century, though, after Muslim invaders destroyed the previous one.

28. Take a boat ride on Dal Lake, Kashmir

Another great travel bucket list adventure in India is to go on a Shikara boat ride on Srinagar’s Dal Lake. This is a relaxing way to explore some of Srinagar’s most famous sights and enjoy the beautiful surroundings at the same time.

29. Go trekking in the Himalayas ✓

Travel bucket list India: trekking in the Himalayas

Trekking in the Himalayas is many mountain and nature lovers’ dream! This is one of the most popular things to do in Nepal, but India is home to a beautiful stretch of these mountain peaks too!

From Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh to Sikkim, Meghalaya and Assam, these mountains can be found in numerous Indian states.

30. Chill at the beach in Goa

Goa is India’s smallest state and the country’s most popular destination for beach lovers. It’s famous for its endless beaches, colonial architecture and vibrant nightlife.

If this sounds like your kind of fun, then chilling at one of Goa’s beaches is a must-do, bucket list experience during your trip to India.

31. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola in Udaipur ✓

tour ideas india

Lake Pichola is a beautiful artificial lake that was created in the 14th century. It’s set in a stunning location in the centre of Udaipur .

One of the best experiences in this city is to take a boat ride on Lake Pichola’s serene waters, but there is more to Udaipur! Some other great things to do here are to visit the City Palace, the Ahar Cenotaphs and the Karni Mata Ropeway .

32. Go rafting in Rishikesh

If you’re looking for adventurous bucket list activities , then river rafting in Rishikesh might be the perfect one for you!

You will want to make sure to visit Rishikesh at the right time of the year if this is something you would like to do, though. The best time to go rafting is from October to April, which is the winter season.

33. Visit the forts in Rajasthan ✓

Amer Fort in Jaipur

The state of Rajasthan is full of magnificent forts. Some of the most famous ones are Amer Fort in Jaipur, Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer Fort and Chittorgarh Fort .

If you’re a history buff, you will love exploring these forts and learning more about their rich history!

34. Go on a wildlife safari

There are plenty of places in India where you can go on a wildlife safari. From the popular Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan to Hemis National Park in Ladakh, Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh and Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

If you’re lucky, you might spot a tiger during your safari. Some of the other animals that can be spotted are elephants, panthers, bears and leopards.

35. Get mehndi (henna) ✓

India is famous for mehndi

Mehndi is traditionally applied on the hands and feet for special occasions like Hindu weddings and festivals. It’s believed to bring prosperity and good luck.

These beautiful temporary tattoos are made using a paste created with the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant.

You can apply mehndi yourself, have someone do it for you or go to a mehndi artist (the last one will probably guarantee the best result).

India Tours & Holidays

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is . Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilisations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practising Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioural standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Top places to visit in India

Surely there isn't a more iconic image of India than the Taj Mahal. It's spectacular and soul-stirring, but words simply aren't enough to describe the beauty of this immense mausoleum (even when it's packed with tourists). Best known as a monument to love and loss, the 17th-century building was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his second wife – a bold declaration of love, indeed!

Wander around Agra on our 3 day Taj Mahal Extension or on our 15 day Real Kathmandu to Delhi tour.

2. Udaipur, Rajasthan

Geography and environment

India shares land borders with   Bangladesh ,   China , Pakistan,   Nepal ,   Myanmar   and   Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilisations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernisation and globalisation. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervour of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of coloured powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolour Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colourful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colourful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejewelled females take the chance to let their hair down.

India is a feast for the senses and we've got everything you need to know before you visit © Andrii Lutsyk / Ascent Xmedia / Getty Images

India is a place that overwhelms your senses in the best possible way – nowhere else delivers quite the same barrage of sights, sounds and sensations as this continent-sized country at the heart of Asia.

It would take a lifetime to see all of India , let alone understand every nuance and facet of this nation of 1.4 billion inhabitants. But with a little preparation, you can learn to navigate the richness of this country, from its snow-capped peaks and velvety beaches to its historic temples and luxuriant palaces.

We've collated the top things you need to know about visiting India, but the journey begins before you leave home. Apply for your Indian visa online for a smooth arrival on the subcontinent. Read on for 22 more insider tips that will help make your vacation unforgettable.

1. Plan your trip around the seasons

India has a reputation for being hot and humid, but with beaches, mountains, hills, coastlines and plains all jammed into a relatively small geographical area, the climate is quite diverse. The southwest monsoon brings rainy weather to most of the country from June to September, but this is the best time of year to visit the high-altitude deserts of Ladakh , although depending on the route you take, you risk encountering landslides and floods.

In the far south, there’s also a milder rainy season from October to December. The ideal weather window for travel is from October to May, though temperatures and humidity climb to agonizing levels from March onwards in the run-up to the monsoon. If you find yourself in India in the spring, head to the Himalayan foothills for milder temperatures and good trekking conditions.

2. Get your jabs before you travel

There is no official requirement for vaccinations to enter India (although yellow fever vaccination is needed if you are traveling from a country where the disease is endemic).

That said, it is important that you contact a health professional at least eight weeks before you travel to ensure your jabs are up to date. Vaccinations for diphtheria and tetanus, hepatitis A and B, polio and typhoid are usually recommended, on top of childhood vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella.

Vaccinations worth considering for longer trips include Japanese B encephalitis, meningitis and rabies. Monkeys, dogs and cats can all carry the rabies parasite, and infection is fatal if untreated.

3. Take malaria precautions

Depending on where in India you are traveling to, you may want to speak to your healthcare provider about taking a course of anti-malarial tablets. For instance, northeastern and eastern parts of India, as well as the city of Mangalore, have a higher malaria risk.

Always take precautions to avoid mosquito bites – this will also help you avoid dengue fever, a viral infection that is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans. Sleeping under a mosquito net, wearing long sleeves and trousers in light colors, and using a repellent and/or a plug-in mosquito killer with a high concentration of DEET (diethyltoluamide) is advisable.

4. Get insured

Travel insurance is essential for India. Depending on where you travel to, you may find public hospitals are poorly equipped. Additionally, most private clinics and hospitals require payment ahead of treatment. Make sure you are covered for emergency evacuation and also for any adventure activities you plan to get involved in.

If you’re unlucky enough to be a victim of crime, contact the local police station or dial 100 or 112, the national emergency number. You’ll need to get the police to file a report (a “FIR" – First Information Report) to make a claim on your travel insurance.

5. Book ahead for busy times and festivals

India can get very busy from November to February, so affordable accommodation is usually swamped in peak season. It’s a good idea to book ahead, either directly with the venues or via booking aggregator sites such as Agoda and MakeMyTrip .

Also, book train tickets in advance where possible , particularly for popular routes. Tickets can be booked (with a fair amount of hassle) via the government booking site IRCTC or more easily through local booking sites such as 12Go or Cleartrip .

6. Plan your comms before you travel

Many things in India (including train bookings or ordering food online) get easier if you have a local SIM card. Bring an unlocked phone from home (or pick one up locally) and get a phone shop to sign you up for a local pay-as-you-go SIM package on arrival. You’ll need to bring passport photos and photocopies of your passport ID pages to complete the application.

7. Check your lunar calendars

While India officially follows the Gregorian calendar, the major festivals for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam and several other religions follow lunar calendars and fall on different dates from year to year. Always check festival dates before you book your trip (bearing in mind these dates are subject to change); the Indian government maintains a useful online list of public holidays .

8. Learn local etiquette

English is the  lingua franca in most metropolitan areas in India, and you’ll get away with polite hellos, goodbyes and thank yous in smaller towns too. However, if you’re traveling in northern India, you can say "namaste" (I bow to you) with your hands together in a prayer-like gesture in front of your chest. Similarly, when meeting Muslims in north India, you can say "salaam alaikum" (peace be with you) – the correct response is "alaikum salaam." Most of the time, it’s the effort that’s welcomed over pronunciation, so don’t be shy!

Shaking hands is a standard business greeting between men, but outside metropolitan regions, men and women rarely shake. Only ever use your right hand. The same rule applies when passing things to people – including money.

If you get invited to someone’s home, bring a small gift (flowers or sweets are always a safe bet) and remove your shoes before entering. It’s polite to eat and drink what you are offered, even if you don’t really fancy it.

9. Dress modestly

Depending on where in India you are, modesty is taken seriously – especially for women. Travelers of any gender will have an easier time if they wear loose-fitting clothing that covers their legs and arms. Swimwear is only appropriate for the beach – although it is not uncommon to see locals swim fully clothed. To fit in, consider investing in a kurta pyjama (a traditional garment resembling a long shirt and loose trousers for men) or a salwar kameez (a long shirt, loose trousers and scarf for women).

10. What to eat and how to eat it

Many religions in India have their own dietary rules. Muslims avoid pork, many Hindus avoid beef, and some Hindus and Buddhists are vegetarian or vegan. Many Jains are vegetarians who avoid some vegetables (most notably onions, garlic and potatoes) and who try to avoid causing harm to all living creatures. These rules mean vegan and vegetarian food is often easy to find in India.

Eating with your hands is the norm in many restaurants, particularly in parts of southern India. Take your cue from other patrons in the restaurant, and remember to eat with your right hand. Mix rice and curry into balls with your fingers and push it into your mouth with your thumb. Some thalis (plate meals consisting of multiple dishes served in tandem) are served not on a plate but on a washed and flash-heated banana leaf.

11. Haggling is not a game of life and death

Haggling for a fair price when buying things – in street stalls and open-air markets – is a way of life in India. Although it can sometimes be a frustrating experience, losing your temper is extremely bad form – if you can’t agree on a price with the vendor that you are both happy with, politely decline and shop somewhere else.

The rules of the game are as follows. The vendor will quote you a price that is more than the item is worth, then you’ll come back with a counter-offer, working up from there until you reach a mutually agreeable figure.

The “walking away” trick may bring a few last-minute adjustments, but before long, you’ll reach a threshold that the vendor won’t go below. Throwing in extra items may bring a discount on the overall cost. Many travelers prefer not to haggle in places where the money goes directly to artisans.

12. Respect etiquette at religious sites

Religion is taken very seriously in India, so it pays to know the rules and expectations for visits to temples, mosques, monasteries, gurdwaras (Sikh shrines), synagogues and churches. Always check if you are allowed to enter – some temples and mosques are closed to people who don’t follow the faith. Mosques may also be closed to visitors during prayers or on Fridays.

If asked to do so, remove your shoes before entering any religious building, and be prepared to cover your head with a scarf or shawl. Generally, always cover your legs and arms (a sarong can be handy as an emergency cover-all). Some temples also ban leather goods, and many religious sites do not allow photography.

Avoid pointing the soles of your feet towards a person or deity – this is considered disrespectful. The same goes for touching any person or effigy on the head. It is conventional to walk around Buddhist and Hindu shrines in a clockwise direction, in a ceremonial circuit known as a parikrama .

Making an offering or leaving a donation is often expected – locals always offer something, but be wary of people waving receipts showing huge donations. Giving something is appropriate, but don’t feel pressured into leaving large sums.

13. Giving alms is common but up to you

The giving of alms has a long history in India, and foreigners can expect to be approached regularly with requests for money. Whether you give or not is a personal choice, but many Indians give on a daily basis, particularly when visiting temples and mosques. Be aware that some requests for money will be scams, and you may be able to do more good by giving your time or cash to charity or aid organizations you’ve taken time to research, rather than handing out cash.

14. Respect local social attitudes

India has complex social rules about respect for elders. Depending on where you are traveling to, older people are often greeted with the honorific “auntie” or “uncle,” and the ending ji may also be added to someone’s name as a sign of respect.

Outside bigger cities, India can be quite conservative when it comes to interactions between unmarried men and women. Also, most parts of India are conservative when it comes to same-sex relationships. Whatever your sexuality, it’s best to avoid public displays of affection.

15. Street harassment is unfortunately common

Although harassment can happen anywhere, parts of India are constantly in the news owing to a lack of women’s safety. Beyond long, unwelcome stares and persistent attempts to start a conversation, more serious assaults are also a risk. Groping is common in crowds (particularly during festivals).

Exercise caution like you would anywhere else, and remain alert. Never get into a taxi or auto rickshaw containing anyone other than the driver, and avoid walking alone in quiet areas, particularly at night. Decline offers of food or drinks from strangers.

If traveling by public transport as a woman, it's best to seek out train carriages and designated seating reserved for women. Wearing a wedding ring (even if not married) and using dark sunglasses and headphones can buy you some privacy on public transport. If you are being hassled, drawing loud attention to the intrusion may encourage others to come to your aid.

16. Keep track of security situations in India

India has seen deadly attacks by separatist and Marxist groups and Kashmiri insurgents. Monitor the local news and be alert for suspicious behavior, particularly around major tourist sites. Always check the security situation before traveling to Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley in case of flare-ups of unrest. Strikes, demonstrations and protests are also best avoided, as violence is a risk. It goes without saying but in the event of trouble, obey local curfews and stay inside – your hotel is probably the safest place to be.

17. Take the altitude seriously when hiking

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a risk when traveling above 2500m (8202ft), which covers most of the Indian Himalayas . AMS can be fatal, so always ascend slowly and take rest days to allow your body to acclimate to significant elevation changes. If you begin to feel ill while hiking in the mountains, stop, and if your symptoms don’t improve, descend immediately.

18. Familiarize yourself with local rules and regulations

India has a few laws and regulations that visitors might be unfamiliar with. For instance, taking photographs of bridges, the periphery of military camps and border crossings – or flying drones over them – is considered a serious security issue.

When traveling by plane internally in India, you may be asked to surrender batteries from devices in your cabin bags. Smoking is banned in most public places, and a few states also have bans on the consumption of beef – killing or injuring a cow in a road accident, even accidentally, can lead to violent reprisals.

To avoid sticky situations, take the time to research where you’re going, and talk to staff at your hotel or hostel or your B&B host for advice on things to be aware of.

19. Steer clear of drugs

India may have a reputation amongst travelers as a place to push boundaries, but its drug laws are strict. Possessing even small amounts of drugs for personal use can lead to a prison sentence.

Some religious groups are permitted to consume marijuana for ceremonial purposes, but that often doesn’t extend to tourists. You can, however, find bhaang – a marijuana mixture made with the leaves (rather than the bud) of the cannabis plant – at government-approved bhaang shops.

20. Avoid the tap water

The tap water in India is not potable. Drinking or brushing your teeth with it can be a fast track to stomach troubles – the most common illness tourists experience in India. Stick to purified or bottled water (or even better, purify your own to avoid contributing to India’s plastic waste mountain).

The water rule extends to ice (be wary of ice in drinks and ice cream) and to uncooked foods, particularly salads and dishes such as coriander chutneys, which may have been washed with contaminated water. When eating fruit, stick to things you can peel or wash thoroughly yourself, and be cautious of freshly prepared juices. Hot drinks are generally fine, so drink your fill of chai (milky tea, often spiced and sweet).

21. Watch local news to keep track of natural disasters

Some geographical areas in India are prone to natural disasters, and the risk is higher in certain seasons. Hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, for instance, often see flash flooding and landslides during the monsoon. Be alert to signs of natural disasters and keep an eye on the local news so you know which areas to avoid. Follow the Indian Meteorological Department’s website as well as their social media handle for timely updates.

If you are caught up in a natural disaster, follow the advice of emergency workers and try to leave the area quickly.

22. Spot the scams

India has a reputation for scams designed to separate tourists from their money, and touts and confidence tricksters can often be found where tourists gather. Get tourist information and make bookings at official offices, rather than “tourist offices” you have been led to by people offering unsolicited help.

If anyone steers you to a hotel, shop or other establishment without you asking, they may be angling for a commission, which will be added to the price you pay. Be dubious of claims that the place you want to go is “closed” – always check yourself to be sure.

Exercise common sense and be wary of deals that sound too good to be true – for example, the gem scam, where travelers are tricked into buying worthless gems to “sell at a profit back home.”

To visit India as a foreigner is easier than ever before. A growing number of cities boast gleaming new metro systems and are linked by faster highways and speedier, more comfortable trains. Affordable but extravagant hotels and thriving restaurants in modern cities like Mumbai , make India an attractive place to visit. Entering the country is simple, too, if you apply for your Indian e-visa online .

However, more than twenty percent of India’s inhabitants remain below the poverty line. No other nation on earth has slum settlements on the scale of those in Delhi , Mumbai and Kolkata , nor so many malnourished children, uneducated women and homes without access to clean water and waste disposal.

But for all its jarring juxtapositions, paradoxes and frustrations, India remains an utterly compelling destination. For those asking why travel to India, trust us when we say its distinctive patina casts a spell that few forget from the moment they step off the plane. Love it or hate it, India travel will shift the way you see the world.

It’s unlikely that you will travel to India and cover the whole country in your first visit. It’s better to focus on a couple of regions and do them justice, in order to make the most of your time. You can decide what sort of pace you want and go to particular areas accordingly.

Indian cities like Mumbai , Delhi , Jaipur , Hyderabad and Chennai are undoubtedly adrenaline-fuelled, upbeat places. But it is possible to travel around India for a long time without setting foot in one, instead meandering through the more relaxing, rural areas.

The Golden Triangle is the most travelled circuit in the country, taking you from impressive monuments to serene landscapes. Here you’ll cover Delhi , the Pink City of Jaipur and Agra , home of the Taj Mahal .

The state of Rajasthan is often the most popular with travellers, thanks to its mix of mesmerising desert landscape and unique cities, but there are plenty of other areas of India to discover for the second- or third-timer or travellers with more time on their hands.

On the other side of the country, the palm-fringed coast lines of Goa draw crowds of international and domestic tourists to their lively beach resorts. Just down the coast, the quieter Kerala offers some of India’s best tropical beaches , tea and spice plantations and national parks housing elephants, tigers and monkeys.

Deciding when to travel to India can be complicated, due to its extremely varied weather. India’s seasons are split into the wet, humid monsoon season, and the dry, cool season.

The monsoon season takes place from May until September. It has a huge influence over travelling in India as it works its way northeast through the country, from the Keralan coast. During this time the south still has a couple of months of cloud, rain and humidity.

Therefore, the best time to visit India is November to March, when the majority of the country is at a comfortable temperature with good weather. Delhi , Agra , Rajasthan and Varanasi are perfect for a visit to India in this period, while Goa and the centre of the country is a little cooler but still comfortable.

The south can get very hot and while it’s always intense, the months of May and June are unbearable, so it’s best to avoid them during this time of year - Kerala or Tamil Nadu are the best places to be January to March.

If you’re looking to experience the Himalayas, the best time to go is from March onwards, with peak hiking season in August and September - the rest of the country at this time is very wet. Find more detailed information on when to go to India .

Most travellers visiting India fly into the country and it’s not difficult to find good flights: there are multiple direct services from the UK, a few from the US and Canada, and two from Australia. There are many airlines that fly to India, and these flights usually arrive into Delhi or Mumbai . From the UK you can also reach Chennai , Hyderabad and Bengaluru without any stops.

As with any destination, fares vary with the seasons. For travel in India fares are highest from November to March, typically when it’s the best time to visit most of the country.

The shoulder seasons of April to May and August to early October are cheaper, and you’ll get the best flight deals during the low season of June and July. Bear in mind that air fares are higher during India’s main festivals and events, such as Diwali in October/November time. For more detail, visit our page on getting to India .

How to travel around India

Once in India, getting around is another thing to wrap your head around and requires some forward planning. Intercity transport in India isn’t considered the most comfortable, quick or efficient, but it is affordable. Wherever you need to go, there’s most likely a route there. The main options are train or bus, but also occasionally plane or boat, and within cities, there are also rickshaws and metro systems.

For longer distances, make use of the cheap long-distance trains, on which journeys are an experience in themselves. If you’re willing to pay a little more for the higher classes of carriage, you can expect to have a reasonably hassle-free and comfortable journey.

Cheap short-haul flights are another good option for India travellers. For more information about travelling in India, visit our getting around page.

Food and drink in India

The cuisine in India is popular worldwide and is as varied as the country's culture, dubbed the land of spices, strong flavours, aromatic curries and a range of meats and vegetables, the dishes change region to region. For obvious reasons, coastal towns boast delicious fish curries while mainland areas are well known for their veggie curries. Beef is almost non-existent in Indian cuisine, as cows are considered sacred under Hindu law. Must try curries include mutton Rogan Josh, macher jhol , vada curry and paneer tikka masala.

Before you visit India, make sure you have up to date travel information. From money to local customs, traveller safety to insurance, our India travel guide will give you all the tips you need to know.

Costs and money

India’s unit of currency is the rupee, divided into paper notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are 1, 2, 5 and 10. One of the most important things to note about the Indian rupee is that it’s technically illegal to take them in and out of the country. ATMs can be found throughout India’s main banks in all major cities, towns and tourist areas.

Travel safety in India

Travel in India is, generally speaking, safe for visitors. As expected anywhere, a tourist may be more susceptible to petty thefts and scams, but common sense and a few precautions go a long way. Crowded places - including public transport - is first and foremost where you should keep your awareness sharp, as this is where pickpockets are most likely to operate.

When staying in dorm rooms, make sure to lock up your luggage with a padlock, and keep an eye on any of your luggage you store on top of a bus and ensure it’s well secured. If you go swimming, do not leave your belongings unattended. It’s also worth mentioning that not all crimes are committed by humans: monkeys in India have been known to steal belongings not only on the street but even from hotel rooms with open windows or straight from your shoulder.

Always remember that destinations and routes popular with tourists are also popular with thieves. Although it’s not common, refuse food and drink from strangers and fellow passengers, as it can be an attempt to drug and steal, too. In saying this, you shouldn’t be paranoid when travelling in India; crime rates are below many western countries and staying relaxed is the best way to experience the country. As with anywhere, just keep your wits about you.

LGBT issues in India

The LGBTQ movement in India had a big win in 2018 when homosexuality was made legal again, having been made illegal by the conservative Modi government in 2013. However, homosexuality is not hugely open or widely accepted in India and prejudice is still ingrained, especially in conservative areas such as Rajasthan .

Female travellers in India

Whilst things are changing, India still has a long way to go in its treatment of women. Travelling India is relatively easy for women on their own and has been happening regularly for years, but female travellers should still expect to be hassled to some extent during your trip.

Women travelling on their own should exercise caution when visiting rural areas and remain alert when out and about at night time. Read more India travelling tips for women.

Travellers with special needs

Because disabilities are fairly common in India (sadly due to lack of treatment available), travellers with special needs are not looked upon unfavourably or inciting an embarrassed expression. However, you’d still be unlikely to find state of the art wheelchair or disabled facilities in the country, and streets are hard to navigate.

Most tourists require a visa in order to travel to India. Luckily, over the years the process for getting a standard tourist visa has been streamlined. Nowadays, online applications are the main way to obtain a visa for a shorter visit. For people who plan to study or work in India, it’s necessary to apply for a special visa.

As mentioned, online visa applications are the most common and efficient way to gain entry into India, and this produces an e-Tourist visa. Citizens of the UK, Ireland, US, Canada Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and many more countries are eligible for an e-Tourist visa through the Indian government’s official online portal . They’re valid for one year from the date of issue for a stay of 90 days during each visit (multiple visits are allowed). Just make sure you secure it at least four days - and no more than 30 - before you travel. For the application, you’ll need your travel details, a photo of yourself to upload and pay the online fee. Make sure you print out the eTV and take it with you to India; upon showing this, you’ll be issued your visa on arrival.

If you own a passport from a country not included on the eTV list, you’ll need to apply for a standard tourist visa. Like the eTV, it’s valid for one year from the date of issue, but you can stay for up to 180 days on one visit. Fees vary greatly across nationalities and you’ll need to check on the respective website.

With well over a billion people and a literacy rate approaching 75 percent, India produces in excess of a staggering 5000 daily papers in more than three hundred languages, plus another 40,000 journals and weeklies. There are a large number of English-language daily newspapers, both national and regional.

Newspapers and magazines

India’s press is the freest in Asia and attacks on the government are often quite outspoken. However, as in the West, most papers can be seen as part of the political establishment, and are unlikely to print anything that might upset the “national consensus”.

The most prominent of the nationals are the Times of India, The Hindu, The Deccan Chronicle, The Hindustan Times, The Economic Times and the New Indian Express, usually the most critical of the government. All are pretty dry and sober, concentrating on Indian news, although Kolkata’s The Telegraph tends to have better coverage of world news than the rest. The Asian Age, published simultaneously in Delhi , Mumbai , Kolkata and London is a conservative tabloid that sports a motley collection of the world’s more colourful stories.

Film fanzines and gossip mags are very popular – Filmfare and the online-only Screen are the best, though you’d have to be reasonably au fait with Indian movies to follow a lot of it. Other magazines and periodicals in English cover all sorts of popular and minority interests, so it’s worth having a look through what’s available.

Foreign publications such as the International Herald Tribune, Time and The Economist are all available in the main cities, though it’s easier (and cheaper) to read the day’s edition for free online. For a read through the British press, try the British Council in Delhi , Mumbai , Kolkata , Chennai and six other cities; the USIS is the American equivalent. The UK’s Guardian website is one of the best online news resources, with an extensive archive of articles and an excellent dossier on Kashmir. Access is free.

Radio and TV

BBC World Service radio can be picked up at 94.3FM in most major cities, on short wave on frequencies ranging from 5790–15310kHz, and on more sporadically medium wave (AM) at 1413KHz (212m) between about 8.30am and 10.30pm (Indian time). It also broadcasts online.

The Voice of America can be found on 15.75MHz (19) and (75.75MHz (39.5m), among other frequencies. Radio Canada broadcasts in English on 6165 and 7255KHz (48.6 and 41.3m) at 6.30–7.30am and on 9635 and 11,975 KHz (31 and 25m) at 8.30–9.30pm.

The government-run TV company, Doordarshan, has tried to compete with the onslaught of mass access to satellite TV. The main broadcaster in English is Rupert Murdoch’s Star TV network, which incorporates the BBC World Service and Zee TV, a progressive blend of Hindi-oriented chat, film, news and music programmes.

Star Sports, ESPN and Ten Sports churn out a mind-boggling amount of cricket, extensive coverage of English Premier League football, plenty of tennis and a few other sports.

Other channels include CNN, the Discovery Channel, the immensely popular Channel V, hosted by scantily clad Mumbai models and DJs, and a couple of American soap and chat stations. There are now numerous local-language channels as well, many of them showing magnificently colourful religious and devotional programmes.

Indian cooking is as varied as the country itself, with dozens of distinctive regional culinary traditions ranging from the classic Mughlai cuisine of the north to the feisty coconut- and chilli-infused flavours of the south; these are often a revelation to first-time visitors, whose only contact with Indian food will probably have been through the stereotypical Anglo-Indian dishes served up in the majority of restaurants overseas. Best known is the cuisine of north India, with its signature biriyanis, tandooris and rich cream- and yogurt-based sauces accompanied with thick naan breads, evidence of the region’s long contact with Central Asia. The food of south India is light years away, exemplified by the ubiquitous vegetarian “meal” – a huge mound of rice served on a banana leaf and accompanied with fiery pickles – or by the classic masala dosa, a crisp rice pancake wrapped around a spicy potato filling. There’s also a host of regional cuisines to explore – Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Goan, Keralan and Kashmiri, to name just a few of the most distinctive – each of which has its own special dishes, spices and cooking techniques.

India’s railways , which daily transport millions of commuters, pilgrims, animals and hessian-wrapped packages between the four corners of the Subcontinent, are often cited as the best thing the British Raj bequeathed to its former colony. And yet, with its hierarchical legion of clerks, cooks, coolies, bearers, ticket inspectors, station managers and ministers, the network has become a quintessentially Indian institution.

Travelling across India by rail – whether you rough it in dirt-cheap second-class, or pamper yourself with starched cotton sheets and hot meals in an a/c carriage – is likely to yield some of the most memorable moments of your trip. Open around the clock, the stations in themselves are often great places to watch the world go by, with hundreds of people from all walks of life eating, sleeping, buying and selling, regardless of the hour. This is also where you’ll grow familiar with one of the unforgettable sounds of the Subcontinent: the robotic drone of the chai-wallah, dispensing cups of hot, sweet tea.

It’s hard to think of a more visibly religious country than India. The very landscape of the Subcontinent – its rivers, waterfalls, trees, hilltops, mountains and rocks – comprises a vast sacred geography for adherents of the dozen or more faiths rooted here. Connecting the country’s countless holy places is a network of pilgrimage routes along which tens of thousands of worshippers may be moving at any one time – on regular trains, specially decorated buses, tinsel-covered bicycles, barefoot, alone or in noisy family groups. For the visitor, joining devotees in the teeming temple precincts of the south, on the ghats at Varanasi, at the Sufi shrines of Ajmer and Delhi, before the naked Jain colossi of Sravanabelagola, or at any one of the innumerable religious festivals that punctuate the astrological calendar is to experience India at its most intense.

The 24 best ways to explore India in 2024

I t is as quick to fly east to Delhi as it is to go west to New York – and with a similar time difference – yet few of us think of India when choosing a winter sun break, a dose of culture or a shopping spree. But at last, all that is changing, as India’s vibrant colours, architectural marvels and luxurious spa hotels become Instagram hits and flight prices fall while connections to the UK increase.

Tourist numbers are picking up, too, with Covid-19 and last year’s visa issues – the result of the UK’s omission from India’s list of eVisa-eligible countries when applications were reopened after the pandemic – firmly in the past. Now, eVisas are once again easy to obtain and valid for up to five years.

And those who’ve not ventured east since 2019 will find plenty to look forward to. Many hotels favoured by British visitors used the pandemic to carry out major renovations, while many Indians started to explore new corners of their own country and loved what they saw, helping many hotels stay afloat.

Getting from place to place has become easier, too, with new dual carriageways, express trains and a swanky new airport – so travel is more direct, more comfortable and more practical than ever, with ticking off numerous big-hit attractions on a single trip no longer quite the delusional desire it once was.

Nevertheless India, like its masala chai, remains best drunk in small cups. Covering big distances to cherry-pick heritage highlights can induce fort-and-temple fatigue, so it’s far better to vary the pace with a tour that includes stopovers in small towns, wildlife sanctuaries or rural palace retreats between stays in the big cities.

Here are 24 holiday ideas that span the breadth of what India has to offer, combining the best of the new, and the most-loved of the old.

1. A classic escorted tour

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is the country’s biggest tourist draw, taking in the Taj Mahal, the recently repainted rose-pink city of Jaipur, and Raj-era Delhi. There are dozens of tour options but one of the best run – and best value – is Riviera Travel’s classic “India”, led by experienced tour managers and based on well-maintained three- and five-star hotels.

The 10-night itinerary with Riviera Travel also features tiger-viewing in Ranthambore and a heritage hotel in Shekhawati; from £1,949 including flights and most meals (01283 245322). It can also arrange extensions to Shimla in the Himalayan foothills, and to Mumbai and Goa.

2. Winter sun in style

Oberoi Hotels has won Best Hotel Group in the Telegraph Travel Awards three times, and its resorts in Agra, Jaipur and Udaipur provide luxurious bases for a winter sun holiday.

Oberoi Rajvilas in Jaipur, built to Oberoi’s exacting standards in the style of a traditional royal palace, is celebrating 25 years. If you can tear yourself away from the heated outdoor pool, set in 32 acres of manicured gardens, there are plenty of curated experiences: from a hot-air balloon safari to cookery demonstrations and Indian wine tastings at the hotel. Double rooms from £450.

Corinthian Travel (020 3583 6089) offers an eight-night “Luxury India with Oberoi Hotels” trip from £3,475 B&B in high season, with a chauffeured car, excluding flights.

3. India in slow motion

The traffic, crowds and hustle of Rajasthan’s big cities can deter first-time visitors. It’s better to start in the countryside and travel slowly to soak up the sounds, scents and vibrant colours of small-town India.

Wild Frontiers is renowned for its small group tours based on family-owned heritage properties. On its “Slow Motion” trip, you ride in open-sided jeeps from Udaipur, the most laid-back of Rajasthan’s big cities, to Castle Bijaipur, superb for walks and birdwatching, to Rudyard Kipling’s beloved Bundi. Wild Frontiers (020 8741 7390) offers both tailor-made and small group tours of the region; 14-night options priced from £3,495 include all meals, but exclude flights.

4. Slowly down the Ganges

The Assam Bengal Navigation (ABN) company pioneered river cruises on the River Ganges, mostly in the delta, sailing upstream from Kolkata to visit the handloom weaving communities along the Hooghly. Its traditional teak and brass riverboat, the stately Rajmahal, also cruises from Patna in Bihar, which was the birthplace of Buddhism.

There’s an open-air rooftop deck to enjoy the peaceful rural landscape from a steamer chair, preferably with cocktail in hand. Book direct with ABN , which has seven nights from £2,000 full board. Jules Verne Holidays (020 3553 6528) offers packages on Assam Bengal Navigation boats from £3,290 for 10 nights, including flights (with no single supplement on some sailings).

5. On safari in Rajasthan

The aromas, sounds and colours of India are best appreciated under canvas, and nobody does it better than Jaisal and Anjali Singh, whose family has long been involved in major habitat conservation projects in Rajasthan.

Their company, SUJÁN , operates three luxurious camps: SUJÁN Sher Bagh on the family’s private estate next to Ranthambore tiger reserve; SUJÁN The Serai in the desert close to the ancient walled city of Jaisalmer; and SUJÁN Jawai in leopard country where the company has successfully reintroduced native species and uses Rabari shepherds to lead walks and jeep rides through hill country.

Prices start from £700 a night, full board, based on two people sharing; Scott Dunn (020 3733 5441) can organise bespoke packages which include flights and transfers.

6. On the beach

Goan beaches are much more inviting than Kerala’s, and the climate is less humid. Head for south Goa where some of the area’s best resort hotels front an uncrowded strand of fine white sand.

The Taj Exotica, beside Benaulim beach, is a particular favourite with the British. Set in 56 acres, it has a spa, a children’s club and babysitting. A week costs from £2,099 B&B through Goa Experience (01489 866986) who can also book imaginative excursions including an overnight safari to a deserted beach.

Alternatively, for a top-end villa holiday, head for the Praya Villas , 14 newly built serviced villas, each with four bedrooms with ensuites, private pools and access to a beach bar and restaurant on Morjim Beach, one of Goa’s most unspoilt, where turtles come to hatch. From £885 per night with MAhout .

7. An Andaman Idyll

Cross the Bay of Bengal and discover Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island, one of the world’s most beautiful. Reached through a virgin forest of precious hardwoods, the beach itself is blindingly white and the water so clear you can see tiny fish swim right past your feet while you paddle.

Best of all there are no sun loungers, food stands or water toys to blight the Robinson Crusoe feel. There are two places to stay, both with good eco-credentials: Barefoot at Havelock , a convivial lodge with tents and log cabins, and the luxurious Taj Exotica Andamans , which has an Olympic-sized pool and a resident naturalist. Selective Asia (01273 670001) offers a week at Barefoot at Havelock from £1,695 per person B&B, including two nights in Chennai; excluding flights.

8. A journey into the heart of India

To get away from the tourist trail, lovers of all things India increasingly head for Madhya Pradesh in the very centre of the country. Thankfully, the once-poor roads have improved in recent years, making travel by a combination of chauffeur-driven car and train a pleasurable experience.

Once visited only for its tiger reserves, the state now has so much more to offer than big cats, including the delightful riverside town of Orchha, the astonishing 3rd-century BC Buddhist stupas in Sanchi and, on the banks of the holy Narmada River, one of India’s finest palace hotels, Ahilya Fort, built by an 18th-century warrior queen.

Greaves Travel (020 7487 9111) can arrange a bespoke journey to suit your interests from Delhi to Maheshwar from £3,395 per person B&B, travelling by chauffeured cars.

9. Yoga on the peaks

Six Senses Vana in Dehradun is the place to head for a truly pampered wellness holiday, combining yoga classes with wellness treatments based on Ayurvedic and Tibetan practices. Beyond the estate, paths lead through Himalayan forests to viewpoints and the home of Welsh surveyor George Everest, after whom the peak was named. Ampersand (020 7819 9770) offers eight days at Six Senses Vana from £4,995 full board, excluding international flights.

10. A walk through village India

Pioneering community walking specialist Village Ways spent the pandemic upgrading its comfortable village guesthouses in the Kumaon mountains south of Nepal. Its village-to-village walks, led by a local guide, are tailored to your ability, from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. There are magnificent Himalayan panoramas and homestays with plenty of opportunities to engage with local communities.

For 2024, it is introducing group holidays aimed at single travellers. The 14-night Complete Himalayan costs from £1,125 per person including all meals and guided walks (00 91 98690 05642).

11. Extreme motorcycling

For dedicated bikers, riding a Royal Enfield over some of the world’s most exhilarating mountain passes is the trip of a lifetime. British Bike Tours (07799 060630) can make the dream come true. It has been running its Indian Himalaya tour since 2006, heading out from Amritsar to the remote Spiti Valley and over the 15,000-foot Kunzum Pass to finish in Shimla. Trip leaders, including a medic, are British; the support team are local. The two-week trip costs £2,350 per person, half board, excluding flights.

12. A family adventure

There is so much to enthral children in India, especially in laidback Kerala. As well as the chance to see elephants in the wild in Periyar National Park, itineraries include floating along the backwaters on a houseboat and stays on farms growing spices, fruit and tea, before taking a local train to the seaside.

Families Worldwide (01962 302062) offers 11-night trips for small groups of parents and children (in school holiday periods) from £1,945 per person B&B, with some dinners; excluding flights. It can also arrange bespoke tours for individual families.

13. Luxury by rail

The views from Indian trains as they wind through timeless rural landscapes full of colour and incident are far more interesting than bowling down dual carriageways in a coach. To ride the rails in style, the elegant Maharajas’ Express is the way to go, its route taking in the erotic temple sculptures of Khajuraho and spiritual Varanasi as well as the Golden Triangle cities. Great Rail Journeys (01904 734154) offers a 15-night trip from £10,995, full board, including flights.

14. A floral paradise

In May, Sikkim in north-east India puts on one of the world’s best flower shows, with many of its 4,000 species bursting into bloom, including rare orchids, rhododendrons and alpines found in remote valleys close to the Tibetan plateau. Nature Trek (01962 733051) offers a 16-night trip, escorted by a botanical expert, taking in Sikkim, Darjeeling (reached by mountain railway) and Bengal for £3,995 per person, including all meals and flights.

15. India in the saddle

Horses feature large in Indian murals and miniature paintings, and the thrill of the chase can be recaptured on a rural ride across Rajasthan. Riding specialist Unicorn Trails (01767 600606) offers a choice of group and tailor-made itineraries for experienced riders, and non-riding companions can travel in a back-up vehicle (there’s no single supplement if you room-share). A week in the Aravallis costs from £1,845 per person, including most meals, excluding flights.

16. Combine north and south

Should you go north or south? TransIndus (020 8566 3739) avoids the issue with an escorted tour designed to give a taste of two very different Indias. After the highlights of Rajput and Mughal Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, fly to Mumbai and then south to Kerala, for a week exploring its backwaters, before flopping on the beach at Kovalam. The 13-night tour costs from £1,895 per person, excluding flights.

17. A culinary pilgrimage

Head to Mumbai – considered the food capital of India – and follow London-based chef and food historian Monisha Bharadwaj as she leads a six-day group tour showing the diversity of Indian cooking, from street stalls and markets to local restaurants and private members’ clubs.

Book through Far and Wild Travel (01768 603715) from £2,950 per person, full board, excluding flights. Alternatively, you can opt for its tailor-made 16-night foodie tour taking in Lucknow, Chennai, Kerala and Mumbai.

18. Excellence in textiles

Lovers of textiles and all things handmade should head for the state of Gujarat in western India. Ahmedabad’s Calico Museum of Textiles is one of the world’s best, showcasing exquisite fabrics, indigo block printing and embroidery that are still made today in villages around Bhuj.

Pettitts Travel (01892 515966) offers a 17-night Highlights of Gujarat tour that visits many craftworking villages and also takes in the Sun Temple at Modhera, Asiatic lions in Gir Forest, and World Heritage site Champaner. From £3,619 per person, with flights and some meals.

19. Tiger, tiger burning bright

To see a tiger up close in its natural habitat is a thrilling experience. India has more than 50 reserves, but three stand out. Ranthambore in Rajasthan has made quite a comeback: sightings are common, and this autumn nine tiger cubs have been born. At Bandhavgarh and Tadoba national parks, sightings are pretty much guaranteed if you stay three nights.

Wildlife Trails (01946 841495) arranges bespoke holidays to reserves all over India; nine days taking in Ranthambore, Agra and Delhi costs from £2,490 per person, excluding flights.

20. A trek among the Nomads

Ladakh, in the remote north-west, has wonderful high-level trekking, especially along the Nubra and Markha valleys, strongholds of Tibetan Buddhism where little has changed for centuries. This is walking for serious hillwalkers, and KE Adventure (017687 73966) has some of the best itineraries, a combination of hotels and camping, for groups of up to 16. A two-week trek along the Markha Valley costs from £2,545 per person, including all meals and flights.

21. The city that has it all

Kolkata, the “second city of Empire”, is often left out of itineraries, yet it’s packed with extraordinary sights, the legacy of both British and Bengali cultures. A week is hardly enough. Walking is the way to go, and Calcutta Walks (three-hour walks from £20, shared/£40, exclusive; 00 91 98301 84030) offers the best, employing historians, architects and actors to help travellers understand India and its history – while sampling some of the city’s street food. It also runs a delightful historic townhouse B&B, Calcutta Bungalow.

22. A Rajput and Mughal odyssey

Truly expert-led cultural tours of India are surprisingly thin on the ground. The best are offered by Martin Randall Travel (020 8742 3355) which has an Essential India tour led by Dr Giles Tillotson, who has written widely on its art and architecture.

The 13-night itinerary includes Varanasi, Khajuraho, Gwalior and the Golden Triangle cities, and costs from £7,150 per person, including meals, tipping and guides, excluding flights.

23. Cycling across India

Experienced riders can easily handle a coast-to-coast ride across southern India, from the old French enclave of Puducherry to the historic port of Kochi. Along the way are thousand-year-old temple towns and ascents through forests that cling to the Western Ghats before freewheeling down to the palm groves and backwaters of coastal Kerala.

A support vehicle will give you a lift if the pace gets too hard, and for an extra cost you can opt for an e-bike. Exodus (020 3131 6076) offers a 13-night escorted tour from £2,299 per person, including most meals, excluding flights.

24. Learn from the masters

Each February, master craftspeople come together to teach a series of immersive art and textile workshops hosted from Diggi Palace in Jaipur. The one-week courses range from indigo dyeing and textile transformation to embroidery and painting.

A particular highlight for 2024 is artist Andrew Logan’s Sparkling Surfaces, sourcing materials in Jaipur’s bazaars to create objets and jewellery that capture the spirit of India. Courses from £1,535. Emma Horne Travel (00 91 99118 74666) can arrange airport transfers and hotels.
