Is “A Dog’s Journey” one of the sweetest canine films out there, or one of the meanest? While I generally favor the latter reading, the gentle sniffling mixed with occasional awws and chuckles that broke out during my screening suggests the majority of the audiences will understandably lean otherwise, as they did with the film’s 2017 predecessor, “A Dog’s Purpose.” In theory, this unconditional affection seems mighty unjust for a shameless family franchise that kills an average of four to five dogs per movie, sometimes, in unspeakably wretched fashions—seriously, where is John Wick when you need him? And yet, as visually uninspired and ideologically conservative as it may be, there seems to be something beguiling about the series that keeps one (including myself, admittedly) on a short leash. Turns out, very few are immune to the sneaky suggestion that certain dogs and humans are meant for each other for life.
This is indeed the philosophy behind TV veteran Gail Mancuso ’s “A Dog’s Journey,” which follows in the paw prints of its Lasse Hallström-directed ancestor with its assembly line of doggie fatalities. (Every dog-loving cinephile’s most cherished website “DoesTheDogDie.com” must be having a field trip with these films.) And before you cry out “spoiler alert,” know that spelling out the mounting corpses of our four-legged furry pals in these tearjerkers is not exactly a wrongdoing. Adapted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-selling novels, the pair of syrupy films follows a Buddhist philosophy, imagining a world in which a dog’s spirit reincarnates in the body of a new adorable puppy (somehow, voiced by Josh Gad even when it’s a female) and pursues its original human to eternity.
“Journey” picks up where “Purpose” had left off, dropping us on a tranquil Midwestern farm ran by the impossibly wholesome couple Ethan ( Dennis Quaid ) and his wife Hannah ( Marg Helgenberger ). Their carefree “Boss Dog” Bailey, a handsome Great Pyrenees Bernese Mountain Dog, runs around the picturesque fields and happily chases his own tail, while keeping a watchful eye on Ethan and Hannah’s baby granddaughter CJ (affably played by Abby Ryder and Kathryn Presscott in later ages), parented by the couple’s heavy-drinking widowed daughter-in-law Gloria ( Betty Gilpin ). Bailey exits the picture soon enough—poor Boss Dog has a cancerous lump—but returns promptly in the body of Molly the mischievous Beagle, reuniting with the 11-year-old CJ to keep a promise he’s made to Ethan. Now living away from her grandparents with the negligent Gloria, CJ finds the kind of comfort and support every child needs in Molly.
Our determined pooch returns again and again as Bailey drops dead in a continuous loop: once, as the African Boerboel Big Dog living on a roadside convenience store (or, “a house made of snacks,” as he calls it), and then as the snippy Terrier Max. Meanwhile, CJ goes through her own transformation and finds herself in the unforgiving streets of New York City as a budding musician with a severe case of stage fright. A series of mean boyfriends—one, a dangerous stalker responsible for Molly’s horrific death—doesn’t help with her insecurity, until she stumbles upon her beloved childhood friend Trent ( Henry Lau ) and falls in love. (Guess what wet-nosed character masterminds the reunion with a paw shake and tail wag?)
Rest assured, there is sufficient amount of cuteness to go around in “Journey,” complete with dutiful canine humor around pooping, face licking, and the perpetual pursuit of food. But while the film engages with the sadness and despair of certain life crises head-on—an unexpected case of terminal illness is especially well-conceived in that regard—it strangely falls short of treating others with the empathy and seriousness they deserve. Written by Cameron, Maya Forbes , Cathryn Michon and Wallace Wolodarsky , the story is outright hostile to Gloria, a paper-thin character whose mourning and alcoholism receives a cruel one-dimensional treatment. A gold-digging ex-girlfriend of Trent suffers in the hands of a similar caricaturized vision. And yet, no one comes to a film like this, where the world is divided into absolute goods and evils, for nuance or subtlety. If you can look behind the flat visuals and prescriptive pleasantries of “Journey,” you might just get on board with its compelling-enough tale of lost souls, found and lifted up by their forever-loyal pooches. On this earth and beyond.

‘A Dog’s Journey’ Review: Good Boys (and Girls) on a Mission
- Share full article
By Glenn Kenny
- May 16, 2019
The preponderance of viral dog videos proves that the animals are sufficiently attractive, intelligent and resourceful that they don’t need stories about their reincarnation to entertain and warm hearts. Nevertheless, we now have “A Dog’s Journey,” the sequel to “A Dog’s Purpose” (2017), all about a multiple-incarnation pooch on a mission to protect a human.
We begin with the always-welcome Dennis Quaid, as a farmer with a strong bond to the shaggy St. Bernard/Australian shepherd mix Bailey. As Bailey is put to sleep, Quaid’s character begs the dog to look after his granddaughter CJ.
Among the many challenges in CJ’s then-toddler life is Gloria, a single mom possessed of more hostility than the entirety of Elvis Costello’s 1970s output. Gloria becomes a drunk and the older CJ adopts Molly, a delightful beagle/Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix who is, yes, possessed by the spirit of Bailey. (Josh Gad provides the cloying dog voice-over regardless of the gender of any individual beast.)
Adult CJ moves to New York and becomes Maggie Rogers with stage fright, or something like that. There, the new incarnation Max, a Yorkshire terrier, “improves” CJ’s life by making her homeless.
Directed by Gail Mancuso, the movie is packed with cardboard characters who only exist to check off bad-things-happen plot points. Stick around long enough and irritation may turn into incredulity as “Journey,” with the enthusiasm of a pep squad turning cartwheels, flips an increasing number of morbidity-skirting twists. Could you have predicted, when Molly learned how to be a cancer sniffer, that Max would retain that talent and use it to diagnose a central character?
I suppose it’s a genuine achievement that a movie packed with as much delightful canine (and agreeable human) talent as this one should be so insufferable.
Rated PG for mature dog themes. Running time: 1 hour 48 minutes.

Where to Stream A Dog’s Purpose?
‘A Dog’s Purpose’ is an American comedy-drama and adventure film based on the 2010 novel of the same name, written by W. Bruce Cameron. The premise of the movie, just like the book, is about a dog who is devoted and is looking for its rightful purpose in life. The movie gained praise upon release, with critics saying that animal lovers are bound to enjoy the sentimentality in the film. In fact, a sequel to the film, titled ‘A Dog’s Journey’, has also come out, proving its popularity. Naturally, now you must be wondering where you can stream ‘A Dog’s Purpose’. We are here to tell you that but first, let us walk you through the plot of the movie.
What is A Dog’s Purpose About?
‘A Dog’s Purpose’ takes place over several years as a dog is reincarnated into different lives. We are introduced to Toby, a mixed breed puppy, who wonders what the true purpose of his life is. While he is playing with his siblings, he is taken away and euthanized and dies wondering if fun is the only purpose of a dog’s life.
In his next birth, Toby is born as a Red Retriever puppy. Two men find him and plan to sell him. However, when they abandon him in their truck to go for a drink, a kindhearted mother and her son, named Ethan, discover the dog and save him from heatstroke. They name him Bailey and convince Ethan’s father to let him stay. Bailey grows up with Ethan and decides that the boy is his life’s purpose. He grows close to the lad whose family life deteriorates as his father becomes an alcoholic.
Ethan, meanwhile, begins dating a girl named Hannah and they have decided to go to the same college. He plans to go on a sports scholarship while she plans to go on her academic scholarship. However, an envious boy named Todd throws a firecracker into Ethan’s house, which results in a fire breaking out. Bailey warns Ethan, who saves his mother and the dog. However, while jumping out of the house, he injures his leg and ruins his athletic career. Bailey attacks Todd, who drops the firecrackers, leading to his apprehension. Later, Ethan becomes withdrawn as his sports career is ruined and he also breaks his romance with Hannah. Bailey moves in with Ethan’s grandparents and his health grows worse with old age.
Bailey is born again as a German Shepherd, who goes on to become a police dog named Ellie. Partnered with a lonely widow, Ellie feels that the job is her true purpose while retaining memories of her past life. During one of the operations, Ellie tries to save a kidnapped girl from drowning and is fatally shot by the kidnapper. The police officer holds Ellie in her arms as the dog passes away.
The dog is reincarnated as a male Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy. He is taken in by a lonely college student, Maya, who names him Tino. Tino decides that his purpose is to make Maya happy, which he proceeds to do by making her meet Al, her classmate whom she begins dating. Tino also falls for Al’s dog, a female Landseer named Roxy. Maya and Al have a happy married life with children as do Tino and Roxy. However, Tino is heartbroken when Roxy does not return from the vet one day. He passes away soon after and gives thanks to Maya for one of the best lives ever.
The dog comes back again and is taken in by an urban lady and is named Waffles. However, the husband is negligent and does not allow Waffles inside the house. Soon enough, the dog is left in an abandoned lot. Since Waffles still has memories of his past life, he makes his way to where he enjoyed as Bailey and is extremely glad to be reunited with Ethan. Ethan initially turns him over to the animal shelter but has a change of heart. He is renamed Buddy. Buddy finally realizes his purpose in life and reunites Ethan with Hannah; the two get married. Buddy convinces Ethan that he is Bailey, the beloved childhood dog, by performing tricks and responding to phrases like boss dog, which Ethan and Bailey knew. Ethan digs up Bailey’s rusty collar and gives it to Buddy as the movie ends with the two playing like they used to. Buddy narrates the various purposes of his lives and what he has learned from them.

The first film was released in theaters in 2019, followed by a sequel A Dog’s Way Home in 2021 which went directly to streaming. Now fans are wondering where they can find these dog-focused dramedies available on their streaming subscriptions. This guide will identify which major streaming platforms feature the A Dog’s Journey movies.
About A Dog’s Journey
The A Dog’s Journey films are based on the book series by author W. Bruce Cameron. There are currently two films in the series that follow a devoted dog who finds new owners throughout his many lives, always watching over someone from his original family. The first film, A Dog’s Journey, was released in 2019 and the sequel A Dog’s Way Home followed in 2021.
Spanning multiple generations, A Dog’s Journey tells the heartwarming story of a dog named Bailey and the meaning of unconditional love. In each life, Bailey is drawn to help someone in the family he is watching over, from protecting an abused boy to comforting a grieving young adult. Bailey brings joy and purpose through every life even as his own life comes to an end and he is reborn into a new puppy.
With its themes of love, friendship, loyalty, and hope, A Dog’s Journey aims to tug at viewers’ heartstrings. The family-friendly films blend elements of comedy, drama, and light-hearted adventure. Parents and kids alike will laugh and cry along with Bailey on his lifelong quest to take care of his beloved humans.
Streaming Services Overview
Netflix – Netflix is the pioneer in streaming entertainment, with a massive library of movies and shows available on-demand. Plans start at $9/month for standard definition streaming. Netflix is best known for its original content like Stranger Things, The Crown, and Orange is the New Black.
Hulu – Hulu offers thousands of current TV shows and movies, including acclaimed original series like The Handmaid’s Tale and Ramy. Plans start at $6/month with ads. For ad-free streaming, it’s $12/month. Hulu is great for next-day streaming of current shows.
Amazon Prime Video – Included with an Amazon Prime membership ($13/month or $119/year), Prime Video offers an extensive library of movies, shows, and originals available for streaming. Notable originals include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and The Boys.
Disney+ – Disney’s streaming service is focused on movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and more. Subscriptions are $8/month. Disney+ is especially popular with families and features new Marvel and Star Wars series.
There are also many other niche streaming services out there focusing on specific content types or genres. No matter what you’re looking to stream, there are plenty of options available for various budgets and interests.
A Dog’s Journey on Netflix
Netflix does not currently offer A Dog’s Journey for streaming as part of its movie library. A Dog’s Journey was released in theaters in May 2019 by Universal Pictures, and often major studio films take some time after the theatrical run to become available on subscription streaming services like Netflix. At this time, A Dog’s Journey has not yet been added to Netflix. However, Netflix does have an ever-changing library of movies, so it’s possible A Dog’s Journey could be added in the future. Since Netflix doesn’t share upcoming release dates for new content, the best way to see if A Dog’s Journey becomes available is to periodically check the Netflix movie library.
A Dog’s Journey on Hulu
Hulu subscribers can watch A Dog’s Journey as part of their subscription. This heartwarming family film was added to the streaming service’s catalog in August 2020. Based on the bestselling book by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Journey tells the story of one devoted dog who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The film stars Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, and Josh Gad as the voice of Bailey the dog. A Dog’s Journey is rated PG, so it makes for a family-friendly movie night option on Hulu.
Hulu offers both ad-supported and ad-free subscription plans, so viewers can choose to watch A Dog’s Journey with or without commercial interruptions. An advantage of streaming the movie on Hulu is that subscribers don’t have to pay extra rental fees to access it. It’s included as part of the standard monthly subscription cost. So dog lovers with a Hulu account can watch A Dog’s Journey as many times as they like.
A Dog’s Journey on Amazon Prime
A Dog’s Journey is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video. The film was added to Amazon Prime’s catalog of movies and TV shows in October 2019, several months after its theatrical release in May 2019. As an Amazon Prime member, you can stream A Dog’s Journey at no extra cost beyond the standard Prime Video subscription fee.
Based on the bestselling book by author W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Journey is the sequel to the 2017 film A Dog’s Purpose. It continues the heartwarming story of a loyal dog named Bailey who finds meaning through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. After being reincarnated into a new puppy, Bailey reunites with his original owner’s now-grown granddaughter CJ and vows to protect her at any cost.
Along with A Dog’s Journey, Amazon Prime offers many other dog and pet-themed movies to its subscribers. So if you’re looking for a touching, family-friendly film about the enduring bonds between humans and their canine companions, you can watch A Dog’s Journey right now with your Prime membership.
A Dog’s Journey on Disney+
Disney+ has a wide selection of family-friendly movies but currently does not include A Dog’s Journey. Though Disney+ features many animal and dog-themed movies like 101 Dalmatians and Homeward Bound, A Dog’s Journey is not yet available on their streaming platform. This heartwarming movie about a dog finding the meaning of life through reincarnation as different dogs is still a newer release, having hit theaters in 2019. With Disney+ focusing primarily on Disney theatrical releases and content from their cable channels, it may be some time before A Dog’s Journey makes its way to Disney’s streaming service. For now, fans of this emotional film will need to look elsewhere to find it available for streaming.
Other Streaming Options
In addition to the major streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, it’s worth checking some other popular services to see if they have A Dog’s Journey available to watch.
Services like HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and Tubi are worth looking into. Though these platforms may not have A Dog’s Journey as part of their standard catalog, they periodically add movies through promotions and licensing deals.
HBO Max in particular has a selection of Warner Bros movies, and Peacock features films from Universal Studios, which distributes A Dog’s Journey. So there’s a chance one of these streaming services could offer the movie on demand or as part of a special event.
Apple TV+ and Tubi also feature a rotating selection of movies, though their catalogs are not as robust. Still, it’s worth periodically searching these streaming apps to see if A Dog’s Journey becomes available.
While it may take some extra effort, looking at alternative streaming platforms beyond the major ones gives you the best chance of finding where to watch A Dog’s Journey online.
Where to Watch A Dog’s Journey

Another major streaming service that offers A Dog’s Journey is Hulu . For Hulu subscribers, the movie can be streamed as part of either the basic ad-supported plan or the more premium ad-free plan. So Hulu users don’t need to pay anything additional to access A Dog’s Journey.
In summary, the two main streaming services that currently have A Dog’s Journey available are Netflix and Hulu. Subscribers to either of these popular services can watch the touching dog film as part of their existing subscription plan.

32 Great Insults From The Golden Girls
Posted: April 24, 2024 | Last updated: April 24, 2024
Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia had plenty of sassy one-liners.
The Golden Girls is the television equivalent of comfort food (even Deadpool loves the show), but just because the classic NBC sitcom offers up plenty of "Thank You For Being a Friend" sweetness doesn't mean it's without spice. Our core four of Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White) and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) were known to loveably fling around funny insults at each other throughout the show's seven seasons (though the actresses' real-life dynamic was reportedly more complicated). Here are some of our favorites.
Jealousy is a very ugly thing, Dorothy. And so are you in anything backless! - Sophia
Mother-daughter duo Sophia and Dorothy had a very loving relationship on the iconic comedy series but that didn't mean that either of them ever shied away from poking fun at their family member. Case in point: Sophia's hilariously brutal burn from the Season 2 episode "Ladies of the Evening."
Can I ask a dumb question? - Rose. Better than anyone I know. - Dorothy
A sweet farm girl from St. Olaf Minnesota, Betty White's Rose Nylund was often portrayed as more sheltered and more naive than her roommates and was known for making goofy comments or sharing peculiar stories about her upbringing. Thus, many of the jokes aimed at the character focused on her intelligence or perceived lack thereof.
My mistake. I thought since you look like Yoda you were also wise. - Blanche
You might think a Southern belle like Rue McClanahan's Blanche Devereaux would be all prim and proper, but Blanche could give it as good as she got it. After getting sassed by Sophia for her age ("Wake up and smell the coffee, ya fossil!"), Blanche retorted with an equally vicious and exceptionally funny comeback in the Season 6 ep "Snap Out of It."
Dirk's nearly five years younger than I am. - Blanche. In what, Blanche, dog years? - Dorothy
Speaking of age jokes, there were loads of them in the Season 1 episode "Blanche And The Younger Man," which saw Ms. Devereaux lie about the age gap between her and her lover Dirk, a young aerobics instructor. However, Dorothy's canine-inspired quip was a standout.
I think there’s a connection between your brain and wallpaper paste. - Sophia
For a tiny Italian woman, Sophia Petrillo is full not only of seemingly endless stories about the old country ("Picture it, Sicily!") but also razor-sharp slights and snubs. Dim-witted Rose is often the subject of Sophia's quick wit, as was the case with this sensationally sarcastic barb from the show's first season.
Oh, blow it out your Tubenburbles! - Rose
Sweet Rose isn't as known for verbal slams as the rest of the titular ladies, but every once in a while, even she would partake in the show's signature jabs and jibes. In the Season 3 episode "Three on a Couch," the foursome seek out a professional therapist to help them with their bickering, during which Rose unleashes several choice words from her Norwegian heritage.
I have a date. - Dorothy. With a man? - Blanche. No, Blanche, with a Venus fly trap! - Dorothy
A shameless flirt, Blanche was known for her numerous relationships with gentlemen throughout the course of The Golden Girls ' seven seasons. Dorothy's love life, however, wasn't quite as prolific as that of her coquettish roommate, which the other characters frequently used as a running joke in the sitcom.
Go to sleep, sweetheart. Pray for brains. - Dorothy
After the ladies' Miami home is robbed while they're at a Madonna concert in the Season 1 episode "Break In," Rose is still a bit unnerved following the burglary. However, that didn't save Ms. Nylund from being the butt of the jokes, with Dorothy canceling out a loving endearment with a laugh-worthy insult.
No matter how bad things get, remember these sage words: You're old, you sag, get over it. - Sophia
As the oldest of the core four, Sophia is sought out by Blanche for advice when an upcoming birthday makes the latter feel a bit depressed over her age in the Season 6 ep "Snap Out of It." However, her sassy response may have Blanche thinking twice about coming to the elder woman for any words of wisdom in the future.
Honey, that phony hair color won't wash out just because you got caught in the rain! - Blanche
Many jokes on the show played up Rose's role as the "dumb blonde" of the bunch, and this wisecrack from the Season 6 episode "The Bloom Is Off the Rose" is no exception. After Rose comes in from the rain crying after seeing a sad movie, Blanche jests that her friend is actually weepy because of a ruined dye job.
Stanley, you’re one chromosome away from being a potato. - Dorothy
Dorothy had a tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband Stanley Zbornak (Herb Edelman), who had left her to marry a young flight attendant. Despite their estrangement, Stan made numerous appearances throughout the show, usually prompting a bitterly funny barb from Dorothy aimed at her freeloading former spouse.
I know you don't get many dates, Dorothy, but stick with what you know. - Sophia
The Season 2 episode "Isn't It Romantic?" is a memorable edition of the show for its progressive-for-the-era depiction of Dorothy's good friend Jean (Lois Nettleton), who is a lesbian. When Dorothy asks her mother how she would react if she had a gay child, Sophia is wholeheartedly welcoming of the idea but still manages to sneak in a funny little dig at her single daughter.
Rose, you must be confused. You come to me if you have problems with a man. You go to Dorothy if there's some grammar you need help with. - Blanche
In another crack aimed at Dorothy's love life (or lack thereof), Blanche reminds Rose about what areas of life her roommates are strongest in. For the perpetually boy-crazy Blanche, that's all things romance-related, which is emphatically not the case where Dorothy is concerned, she jokes.
Why don't you just tell him that you don't know who he is? - Dorothy. And hurt an old friend? Boy, Dorothy, no wonder nobody likes you. - Rose
All four women had many love interests throughout the sitcom and in this Season 7 ep "Old Boyfriends," Rose funnily enough can't recall an old beau (Ken Berry) who claims that they dated back in high school. (Much to Blanche's shock, Rose reveals that she had 56 boyfriends her senior year alone!) When Dorothy suggests simply fessing up that Rose can't remember him, the latter offers up a very ironic insult in reply.
May you put your dentures in upside down and chew your head off. - Sophia
Between Sophia and Dorothy, we already knew that wisecracking was strong in the Petrillo bloodline and that theory was further proven by the introduction of Sophia's similarly diminutive and sarcastic sister Angela Vecchio (Nancy Walker). A conversation between the two siblings was like a tennis volley of insults, and this match point from Sophia was no exception. But no matter how mean the name-calling, the sisters always reconciled.
You'll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago, which rendered her totally annoying. - Dorothy
Again, that classic Petrillo humor! There were several variations of Dorothy's "You have to excuse my mother" jokes over the years on The Golden Girls (Ex: "She suffered a stroke which left her, if I can be frank, a complete burden") but our favorite is from the fittingly titled Season 6 episode "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Sophia?"
Blanche, if your 21st birthday was 20 years ago, you'd only be 41 years old. - Rose. That's right! - Blanche. Gee, you look terrible for your age. - Rose
A lot of the humor in Rose's put-downs is just how joyfully she delivers them. And she's positively proud of this jibe, based on the running joke that Blanche lies about her real age. (Fun fact: Given that the "Mother's Day" episode reveals that Blanche was seventeen in 1949, she actually would have been 53 around the time that Rose dropped this dig.)
The woman keeps a chicken in her home, how normal can she be? - Dorothy. I kept a chicken in my home! - Rose. You see my point? - Dorothy
In the Season 2 episode "Long Day's Journey into Marinara," Dorothy offers a two-for-one clowning: the first, against Rose's friend who keeps a piano-playing chicken as a pet, and the second against Rose herself, who wants to babysit the bird. It's yet another example of the wild—literally!—upbringing that Rose had in St. Olaf.
You're a furry little gnome, and we feed you too much! - Dorothy
Many of the jokes from Bea Arthur's Dorothy play up the petite stature of her mother Sophia—actress Estelle Getty was only 4 foot 11 inches, nearly a foot shorter than her 5-foot-10 onscreen daughter. In this Season 7 jest, she's basically comparing her tiny mom to a Gremlin.
Rose, you're bringing down the curve for the whole country. - Dorothy
It's another one lobbed at the daffy Rose, but sometimes she says something so witless that a Dorothy dig is warranted! Funny proof: after Blanche revealed that her sister Charmaine called, which was surprising because the siblings weren't speaking, Rose innocently asked, "Then how'd you know it was her on the other end of the line?"
You're not going to eat them, are you? - Rose. No, Rose. We're going to go to some dumb country and try to use them as money. - Dorothy
It's well-known that the gals liked to have a good gossip session over a few slices of cheesecake but in the Season 4 episode "The Days And Nights Of Sophia Petrillo," Rose admonishes her roommates when she finds double-fudge cookies in a cupboard after they had agreed not to keep the sweets in the house. Of course, Dorothy takes it as an opportunity to rib Rose.
Oh Dorothy, a man called for you while you were out. - Rose. Finally, now we can break out that bottle of champagne we've been saving! - Sophia
Dorothy did actually have several suitors during The Golden Girls ' seven-season run on NBC—she even marries Blanche's uncle, Lucas Hollingsworth (Leslie Nielsen), in the series finale—but you wouldn't know it based on the way Sophia always made fun of her daughter's relationship status.
I'm just so embarrassed to be seen in this old thing. - Blanche. Don't worry Blanche, the dress covers most of it. - Sophia
Blanche would go to any length to impress a man and in the Season 7 episode "Mother Load," she can be seen sauntering around the house in a less-than-casual frock to tempt a local newscaster, Jerry Kennedy (Peter Graves). Leave it to Sophia, though, to take her down a peg by reminding Blanche of her age.
Rose, have I given you any indication at all that I care? - Sophia
Scenes between Sophia and Rose were always a delicious mix of salty and sweet. This quote from the show's first season is much of the same, with the older Petrillo abruptly cutting one of Rose's infamously long-winded stories short ("When I was a little girl, one summer we had a terrible thunderstorm...").
I have to confess, I dabbled a little in poetry writing in high school - Dorothy. That's nothing to be ashamed of! A lot of tall girls who couldn't get dates wrote poetry in high school. - Rose
In the Season 2 ep "Big Daddy's Little Lady," Dorothy and Rose partner up to write some lyrics for the chance to win $10,000 in a songwriting contest. However, before they can put their musical skills to the test, Rose proves that she's got an ear for a good insult, poking fun at Dorothy's schoolgirl days.
Terrific little figure, gorgeous hair, perfect skin. Just like looking in a mirror. - Blanche. Get some Windex! - Sophia
Blanche puts a lot of effort into how she looks and has a very strong sense of pride in her beauty. So when her young, pretty niece Lucy Warren (Hallie Todd) comes to visit the gals in Season 1, Blanche can't help but comment on the family resemblance. But, then, neither can Sophia!
Ned was sort of the town idiot. - Rose. When? On your days off? - Sophia
For a small town, St. Olaf, Minnesota sure packed in a whole lot of lore, which Rose proudly shares with her roommates, much to their chagrin. In Season 5's "Sisters and Other Strangers," Rose revealed that Olaf's town motto was "Better Ned than red," which prompted this classic Sophia zinger.
But of course, my heroine doesn't look like you. This is a romantic novel, not science-fiction. - Blanche
In the Season 5 episode "Sick & Tired," Dorothy is dealing with chronic fatigue and goes to see several doctors to figure out what's wrong with her. Meanwhile, Blanche decides to become a novelist, but is suffering from writer's block. The two storylines come together when Blanche declares that Dorothy is looking sicker and sicker, like her book's heroine.
Well, I'm here if you want to pick my brain. - Rose. Rose, honey. Maybe we should leave it alone and let it heal. - Dorothy
Rose's utter cluelessness is part of the charm of the character—and it's made even funnier by the mocking it regularly incites from her friends. Here's another instance of Dorothy hilariously trying to soften a savage response about Rose's dopiness with an endearment.
Must you always be so cheerful, you empty-headed Mary Poppins knockoff? - Blanche
Yes, Rose's perpetual sunniness does get picked on quite a bit by the other women, which serves as the basis of this joke from Season 3. When Rose asks Dorothy if she's noticed that Blanche has been picking on her lately, Ms. Devereaux struts in with a perfectly timed shady comment. (Even better is Rose's response to Dorothy after: "Let me know if you notice anything!")
Strictly hypothetical, let's say a man wants to take you out on a date. - Sophia. Why is that hypothetical? - Dorothy. Check your calendar! - Sophia
Sophia and Dorothy were the epitome of the judgmental mother-daughter relationship. And speaking of relationships, Dorothy's mom always had something to say about her dating life, including this Season 6 episode “Wham, Bam, Thank You, Mammy,” in which Sophia tries matchmaking Dorothy with a variety of men.
Get back here, you deceitful little Sicilian gecko! - Dorothy
This Dorothy Zbornak zinger hits on many of the things she regularly teases her mother about, from her short stature to her old-school Italian heritage to her mischievous nature. In this case, Dorothy finds out that Sophia has been milking a sprained ankle injury simply because she likes hanging out with the nurse that Dorothy hired her.

Jon Bon Jovi Reflects on the Band's 40-Year Legacy and Roller-Coaster Journey: 'I Have Great Pride' (Exclusive)
The beloved rocker reminisces on Bon Jovi’s impact — and future — ahead of the April 26 release of the Hulu documentary, 'Thank You, Goodnight'
Jon Bon Jovi is looking back on 40 years of rock stardom, how he got here — and what’s next.
More than four decades ago, Bon Jovi worked as a go-fer at the N.Y.C. recording studio the Power Station.
“The biggest thing I learned there was the bigger the star, the nicer the person,” he says. “It was the Rolling Stones who would hold the door open for you when you were coming in with the burgers and the coffee.”
Then an aspiring musician, Bon Jovi notes he “wasn’t rubbing elbows with the Rolling Stones, but while you were sweeping the floor or parking their car, you would observe. The bigger stars would take a moment to say, ‘How’s that demo going?’ That stayed with me.”

Within a few years, Bon Jovi went from running errands to releasing his eponymous band’s breakout hit “Runaway” — and soon joining the ranks of the guitar heroes he saw at the Power Station.
“I was willing to outwork everybody — I think that’s what it came down to,” says Bon Jovi, 62. “I definitely wasn’t the best at anything. I was just the hardest working, and it was nothing more than the desire to get better every day.”

Now the Bon Jovi frontman and his bandmates are looking back at their journey from suburban New Jersey dreamers to one of the biggest, most beloved rock acts of all time in the new four-part docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (streaming on Hulu April 26). The show gives a behind-the-scenes look at their meteoric rise and impressive endurance — along with no-holds-barred commentary on their tumultuous ride, including members’ substance abuse issues and Richie Sambora’s sudden departure.
Bon Jovi also details how recent vocal cord issues nearly forced him into retirement and led him to a new outlook on life.
Jake Chessum
“The thing that gave me so much pleasure had been taken away,” he says. “Joy is something you got to work at, right? Happiness is what you make it. It’s not about seizing the day anymore. I think it’s about embracing the day. I don’t have to punch it in the face anymore, now I just give it a hug, and that’s a good place to be.”
Born John Francis Bongiovi Jr. to his barber father and florist mother Carol (both former Marines), Bon Jovi began playing guitar after he caught the bug from a neighbor in Sayreville, N.J. Inspired by area artists like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, he started playing on the Asbury Park music scene.
After breaking out in 1984, the band Bon Jovi — rounded out by guitarist Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Alec John Such and drummer Tico Torres — cemented their status as rock gods two years later with their album Slippery When Wet and its smash hits “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
Bon Jovi has sold more than 130 million albums worldwide and toured over 50 countries, picking up a Grammy and scoring a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction along the way. Those accolades were hard earned. Despite their radio and touring success, the band constantly felt the need to prove themselves over the years because they crossed genres and weren’t critical darlings.
“The only way to really prove something like that,” he says, “is just go out there and do it, do it again and do it again.”
And so they did, becoming one of the highest-grossing touring acts of all time.
Adds keyboardist Bryan: “We were relentless young men who set out to make it — and we made it.”
But in 2022, Bon Jovi thought his performing days might be behind him. Having dealt with vocal cord issues for years, he realized he had to get medical help or retire. Nearly two years since he underwent surgery to alleviate loose vocal folds that were stealing his voice, Bon Jovi is on the mend — and hopeful. The band will drop its 16th album, Forever , in June.
After weathering the ordeal, Bon Jovi says the new record “is really about my finding joy again. What really matters in a life? It’s love and loyalty and finding things that make you want to get up out of bed in the morning.”
Mark Seliger
The rocker has plenty to live for. He has been married to wife Dorothea for 35 years, and they share four children, Stephanie, 30, Jesse, 29, Jake, 21, and Romeo, 20.
“I look back at the accomplishments of the band, and my family,” he says, “and I feel great pride.”
And Bon Jovi is now living by the advice he’d give his younger self working at the recording studio: “Take the time to enjoy every phase of it. Some of it was with my head down, staring at the pavement in front of my next step. I could have looked up and saw the sun shining and the clouds in the sky,” he says. “That’d be the only thing I would tell a young kid today. ‘Enjoy that walk.’”
