Hawaii Movie Tour®

With its striking natural beauty, Kauai has long been a destination for Hollywood filmmakers intent on capturing the island’s unspoiled terrain. See famous locations for Pirates of the Caribbean , Jurassic Park , and more!

FUN THINGS TO DO IN KAUAI

Located at 22°05′N 159°30′W, Kauai has a total land area of 562.3 square miles and a population of over 67,000 people.

Kauai is a place that sets the imagination soaring.  Her extraordinary beauty and charm have been immortalized in dozens of Hollywood films and television shows, yet there’s nothing like meeting the real thing. View Kauai through the lens of Hollywood on our  Hawaii Movie Tour .

Perhaps the most striking quality of Kauai is her Eden-like loveliness. The chiseled ridges and valleys of Kauai’s Mt. Waialeale are cloaked, velvet-like, by emerald rainforests. Dramatic cliffs tower thousands of feet above the vast Pacific Ocean. The island’s edges are scalloped with sandy beaches and snorkeling spots frequented by Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles. Lying hidden from sight are remote valleys, waterfalls, and sea caves, accessible only via air or sea.

There are many ways to feel Kauai’s charm: visit beautiful waterfalls, take a leisurely cruise along Wailua River to the famed Fern Grotto on our  Waimea Canyon and Fern Grotto Tour , and find inspiration at Waimea Canyon – a geological wonder measuring 14 miles long and more than 3,600 feet deep. Cinema fans can follow their favorite actors and see, first-hand, some of Kauai’s iconic sites captured in blockbuster films.

There are small towns to visit, local foods to sample, historic points of interest, and much more worth finding – on Kauai, Hawaii’s Island of Discovery.

Popular places to visit:

  • North Shore, Hanalei Valley
  • East Side, Na Pali Coast
  • South Shore, Poipu Beach
  • West Side, Waimea

Best Kauai boat tour

Holo Holo Charters has been named the #1 Best Boat Tour in the U.S. by the USA Today 10Best Readers Choice Awards contest!

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THE BEST BOAT TOUR:

Fun fact—did you know that Holo Holo’s tour boats were all designed and built right here on Kauai? True story! Every other tour boat operating on Kauai was ordered and delivered from a faraway factory in a faraway land, but we’re proud to say that our company’s boats were designed by our company’s founder, specifically to tackle the unique and challenging ocean conditions Kauai faces as the westernmost island of the most remote island chain in the world. Our boats will enhance your Kauai boat tour experience, and so will our personnel.

Friends, winning the title of #1 Best Boat Tour in America is a major affirmation that 1.) our company’s ideals resonate with people and 2.) we’re succeeding in realizing those ideals.

Our Kauai-built boats are perfectly designed to take you and your family on an experience of a lifetime in the utmost safety, comfort, and style, to remote locations around the Napali Coast, Niihau, and Lehua Crater. Our talented team strives to provide impeccable service and deliver extraordinary ocean experiences. We’re ready to impress, so come holoholo with us and let us give you a big dose of vitamin sea!

"Fabulous Cruise"

Great service! Saw whales, sea turtles, bottle nose dolphins and spinner dolphins. The crew Drew, Emily and Jess were fantastic! They were very knowledgeable and we learned a lot of information about the island and the sea life. Highly recommend this cruise line!

"Beautiful Ride"

From the moment we took off our shoes it was a great ride. The guys were great and personable. Plenty to eat and drink and the group size was just great. Not too crowded. Beautiful sunset and beautiful water topped off the adventure.

"Highlight of Our Trip"

The Holo Holo snorkel/sail was a great excursion! The sailing was especially a fun experience. The crew was knowledgeable and helpful. Wasn’t a lot to see snorkeling, but it was still fun. Great activity for families. We saw monk seals, dolphins, turtles, and humpback whales from the boat.

Kauai has a special place in the hearts and minds of many visitors because it is one of the oldest Hawaiian islands. It also is the greenest among the islands of Hawaii, covered by mountains and forest. It is not surprising that Kauai has become a popular destination for tourists.

My tours are perfect for passengers on a cruise ship with limited time at port or tourists who only have half a day on the island. If you are thinking of visiting the island, I can help make your stay more memorable and hassle-free with my tours. You will enjoy the ultimate experience in this beautiful place. Only if you think he went above and beyond your expectations. In America, tipping is a way of acknowledging a job well done. In general any person in a hotel, a cab/taxi/uber, airport, a dining table will be working for tips and they are greatly appreciated. I think of a tip like applause. You pay to go see a performance and your tip is the applause, and who doesn’t love a standing ovation? You can google appropriate tipping but for me a $20 tip per person, per day would be a suggested tip for me or any guide you use anywhere for a personally guided tour like I give, if you are so inclined.

The island of Kauai has many beautiful sights and natural wonders that will suit any taste. You can either relax, explore or dive into adventures while you’re here. There are a wide variety of Hawaiian activities on the Island, the best one will depend on what you enjoy the most. Surely, you’ll get to experience it in Kauai!

Kauai is the ideal place for people of all ages. Adults will love the natural wonders, and kids will enjoy exploring mountains and beaches alike. From relaxing to new adventures, Kauai has much to offer every visitor.

The North Shore is a great place to see natural waterfalls and enjoy all that Kauai has to offer from the shoreline as well as some good food. The Waimea Canyon offers you a chance to experience a majestic view of Kauai waterfalls, like the beautiful Waipo’o Falls. You will also be able to see what it feels like on top of a mountain with breathtaking views stretching out into infinity before your eyes.

On Kauai, there are innumerable unforgettable activities and attractions. The wonderful culture, people, and foods are a great bonus! You may be wondering if there is one particular place that you must visit while on the island. It all depends on your personal preferences and desires.

Below are 7 things you should not miss in Kauai according to Travel Channel .

1. Waimea Canyon

Visit Waimea Canyon Drive for many wonderful lookout points. You’ll get your picture-perfect moments from the overlook. If you’re looking for something even more impressive, take one of the trails that wind throughout the valley offering even bigger views.

2. Allerton Garden and Lawai Bay

If you want to get beautiful views of the south, consider Law Beach. The beach backs up to Allerton Garden and features great sunsets.

3. Na Pali Coast

The fifteen-mile Cliffs coast offers awe-inspiring views sprawled out along the coastline. You may also see whales while you view this natural wonder.

4. Hanalei Bay

If you’re visiting Kauai, a must-see is the Hanalei Bay on the northern coast. The beach provides ample space for day-trippers, snorkelers, and sometimes even surfers.

5. Farmers’ Markets

Farmers’ markets are abundant on the island and great for a fun walk from town. Sheets of fresh fruit like local pineapple await you there.

6. Acai Bowls

Make sure to try the perfect tropical treat that will make your mouth water. It’s a fruit-filled bowl that is Instagram-worthy.

7. Trying Poke

Poke is a traditional Hawaiian meal. It’s a bit like Sushi in a bowl. The number of poke varieties available is overwhelming, but you can choose by how you prefer your ahi.

The best way to experience things with your Kauai tour is by talking with me about your interests so we can plan a tour for you .

There are many activities on the island of Kauai. The number one activity is just exploring this beautiful place. You’ll get to see a variety of natural wonders, experience incredible adventures, enjoy delicious food and culture and so much more while you explore this paradise.

Other popular activities include hiking (with or without waterfalls), watching dolphins, helicopter tours over Napali Coast, scuba diving, or snorkeling at any of the amazing beaches on the east side like Tunnels Beach or Ke’e beach. If you want something different from your typical tropical vacation then try paddle boarding in Anini Beach Park. The place is suitable for beginners attempting to do this for the first time. You can even do this while enjoying the views and spotting tropical reef fish, eels, seahorses, eagle rays, green sea turtles, and different types of fish.

Another great activity is a visit to any farmers market, where they sell fresh produce, flowers, honey, and homemade items like jams & jellies, pickles & relish, and locally made crafts. These markets are open daily and are great places to explore the culture while enjoying fresh fruit usually source by locals directly from the region.

That is a question that I always get from clients. The answer to how many days in Kauai depends on what you want to do and see while you are here. You will probably need at least two full, consecutive days if your plan includes exploring the Napali Coast by boat or helicopter tour. You would also need more than one day if your plan includes taking in the sights and enjoying more than one activity or adventure on this big island.

I recommend a minimum of three days for any first-time visitor to Kauai. As for me, it’s best to try to stay a week on Kauai as it gives you time to get out and explore things at your own pace without rushing around too much from one place to another. That is my personal preference though! Your mileage may vary depending upon what exactly are your plans when you visit.

When you have limited time though, know that I offer tours where you can still enjoy Kauai in just six hours . We will maximize your stay and make sure that it will still be remarkable. Kauai is an amazing place for anyone looking for outdoor adventure, relaxation or even just time catching up with family and friends. So enjoy yourself while experiencing what Kauai has to offer.

The best time to visit Kauai is from April to June and September to November. In the off-peak months, the weather is still very comfortable without as many tourists around. The weather from September to November is equally beautiful with fewer tourists and more events and festivals. Since it’s the low season airfare and hotel rates drop during this time. Prices are slightly more expensive during the peak season, they become cheaper after the peak season ends and before families begin their summer travels. But any time of year can be a great time to go as long as you plan ahead and pick your activities wisely based on weather conditions for a given month or day.

It’s also important to check out weather conditions before your island adventure. This is for you to know what type of activities you can do and what clothing to bring with you. You don’t want to get caught off guard without the proper gear, especially if it is raining! Places to bookmark in your weather app would be Waimea, Poipu, Kapaa and Princeville.

Only on the tours originating from the cruise ships do I combine the tours but I do offer a premium private tour for those wanting the privacy and attention not found on the motor coaches from the ships.(See Kauai cruise ship passenger tour) . I also go where the motorcoaches don’t go on the Waimea Canyon State Park tours.

Warm sunshine and gentle rains are ideal conditions for a healthy green environment. While Hawaii is well known for its sunny, dry weather, Kauai’s climate includes periodic showers that provide the island with the necessary moisture.

Whether you are visiting during the winter or summer, sun exposure should be a consideration when planning your Kauai vacation. Poipu and Waimea on the Southside are ideal for sunny days. The driest areas on Kauai are the southern part of the island, like Poipu or Waimea and Kekaha. But even if rain showers pop up from time to time – these tend to pass quickly through with sunshine returning soon after.

However, it’s always best to check the forecast or ask locals for advice. Spending hours taking safety measures like researching the weather is all worth it. Even if there is rain on one side, it can be dry and sunny just a few miles away! So do your research in advance to ensure that weather conditions are perfect for what you plan to do while visiting Kauai.

Kauai has relatively mild weather year-round with warm temperatures, trade winds, and little seasonal temperature variation. But there is a rainy season that runs from November to March which can sometimes extend into April depending on how the seasons progress in Hawaii.

Rain is beneficial to the island environment by providing moisture for growth and replenishing groundwater. The rain in Kauai provides various benefits that tourists also enjoy. The rain makes the beautiful waterfalls flow and refreshes the flowers to make them bloom. Also, a rainbow may also appear after some showers.

The best way to tour around Kauai is by car . Driving through all four corners of the island will give easy access to different locations. It is also a great sightseeing opportunity.

There are many public buses on Kauai and they are affordable. However, they don’t always go to most of the tourists’ destinations. Buses stop near hotels and the airport, but attractions, such as Napali Coast, can be difficult to reach without a car. You can also check the public transportation schedule if you wish to try this option. They have detailed info included with per adult fee, seniors and kids get a discounted rate. It is surely another level of experience to explore a place with its public transportation.

Another way to get around Kauai is by booking guided tours with companies like mine. I understand that a lot of tourists do not have much time to do all the research on where to go or where to rent a car. That’s why I started my company, to make sure everyone can still have the chance to explore the beauty of Kauai even with a limited time. I want everyone to feel what I did and why I moved here. Everyone deserves the chance to experience what Kauai has to offer.

I’ll bring you to the spectacular places on the Island while giving insights about Kauai with interesting stories. Kauai Tour Guy is all about convenience and enjoyment. If you are looking for the best way to get around Kauai, then book a tour with us right away!

Hiring a tour guide is beneficial in many ways. With limited time, you will not have to spend it checking where to go or how to get there. You can sit back and relax while I drive you around the island showing what Kauai has to offer at its best. If you are the driver you do not want to miss out on the beautiful scenery because your eyes should be on the road.

Below are just a few of the reasons why you should hire me:

Flexibility Since I offer private tours , you can choose the places you want to go to, and which ones not to. I do have pre pre-arranged itineraries for Waimea Canyon and the North Shore , but you can let me know if there is a special request. I’ll surely give my best to accommodate it whenever possible.

Affordable tours at a reasonable price point You may be thinking that doing the tour on your own and renting a car is much cheaper than hiring a tour guide. Truth is, considering the convenience a tour guide offers, the expense is much less. You surely don’t want to end up finishing your limited time in the island trying to figure out the routes around the island or researching where to go, much less getting lost.

Saves Time When you hire me, you’ll save so much of your time. Time is important, not only do I arrive on time but I also make sure your tour is convenient and packed with great destinations. You also don’t need to spend time learning or figuring things out on your own. You can always let me know what interests you and I can always give sound advice or arrange it when needed.

Useful Insights All places have distinct traditions, having me as a tour guide ensures that you know these. It’s always best to learn and pay respect to the culture of the locals. This way you’ll be able to value the experience even more.

The best area for your stay while in Kauai will always depend on your purpose of stay and the activities you wish to do. You’ll have to identify below to make sure you get the accommodation that suits your needs:

  • Budget Knowing your budget will help you filter out your searches. There’s no need to check on accommodations that are out of the budget. It’s either a waste of time or ending up booking something that is out of your allotted budget.
  • Travel Destination This is very important as it will save you a lot. You surely don’t want to book a room that is far from public transportations when you don’t have a car with you. You’ll end up wasting a lot of your time and money. Also, if you wish to spend more time in a certain city then it’s only reasonable to book a stay there than to the next city.
  • Number of Companions If you are traveling with a family, you might want to book an apartment or hostel where you’ll have access to the kitchen. However, if it’s just you or if you are a couple with a few days’ stay then paying for a hotel can be worth it.
  • Activities Of course staying in a place where your activities are, is always the best way to go. You will not have to think about getting around and it’s more cost-efficient this way as well. This can be helpful especially when you are going on an adventure or if there’s something that requires physical exertion like hiking trails.
  • Accommodation Expectation It’s important to check on your preferences. If you are the type who likes a certain comfort then make sure that whatever accommodations you book have everything as per your expectations. Budget and expectations usually do not match, sometimes you have to compromise one.

Once you have all these details with you, then you can start your search. You can also check on  Kauai’s Hotel reviews prior to booking your stay.

The Best Kauai Boat Tours

sailing along razor edged cliffs, rising more than 3000 feet high, on the remote and rugged napali coast of kauai, hawaii.

From humpback whales and spinner dolphins to peaceful sea turtles, Hawaii's beautiful seas teem with wildlife. Observing these creatures alongside Kauai' s dramatic cliffs is best done from the water aboard a catamaran, a kayak or even an inflatable raft. U.S. News selected the following Kauai boat tours as the best available after analyzing both traveler and expert opinion.

Best Napali Coast Boat Tours

Holo holo charters – napali sunset dinner tour.

The tour also includes a hot dinner, as well as mai tais, beer and wine. Tourgoers describe the crew as exceptional and say the views are fabulous. Reviews for the food are more mixed, with many describing the dishes as average. Several travelers also warn of choppy waters and advise taking motion sickness medication ahead of your cruise.

Tours generally depart daily from Port Allen in the late afternoon, but departure times vary by season. Children younger than 5 are not allowed on the cruise. Holo Holo Charters also offers snorkeling cruises and a daylong tour that sails by neighboring island Niihau.

Blue Dolphin Charters – Niihau & Napali Coast Snorkel

In addition to snorkeling equipment, tourgoers also have access to boogie boards, pool noodles and a slide on the boat. The trip also includes breakfast and a deli-style lunch with beer, wine and mai tais, as well as nonalcoholic beverages. Travelers report seeing lots of wildlife and praise the friendly crew.

Tours are generally available Tuesday, Friday and Sunday with a 6 a.m. check-in time. You may receive a slight discount by booking online ahead of time. Children younger than 5 are not permitted on the tour. Blue Dolphin operates a few other snorkel tours, as well as a whale watching trip and sunset cruises.

Kauai Sea Tours – Na Pali Raft Tour

Price: Adults from $190; kids from $180 Duration: 5 to 5.5 hours

Participants have the opportunity to snorkel and enjoy a packed lunch and nonalcoholic drinks while on the excursion. Tour-takers praise the crew and say they enjoy the views and the plentiful wildlife, ranging from dolphins to monk seals to turtles. Others caution the ride can get choppy.

Trips depart at 7 a.m. year-round, and additional tours at 1:30 p.m. are offered from June through August. Kids must be 7 or older to participate. The company also offers whale watching tours and sunset cruises on traditional boats.

Na Pali Coast Tours – Na Pali Sight See Adventure

Price: From $250 Duration: 2 hours

Calling all thrill-seekers! This catamaran tour departing from Hanalei Bay promises lots of adventure, jaw-dropping views and plenty of speed. As you travel along the coast, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, sea turtles, humpback whales (in winter), waterfalls and rainbows. Travelers rave about the stunning views and appreciate the captain and crew's knowledge of the island's history and wildlife. Reviewers also appreciate the ability to access multiple sea caves thanks to the boat's easy maneuverability. Though the boat affords up-close views of the coast, it doesn't protect against sea spray and is not equipped with a restroom, so keep that in mind when booking.

Tours typically depart Monday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (though offerings may vary by season). A maximum of 18 passengers are permitted on board. Due to the more adventurous nature of this tour, it's not recommended for children younger than 4 years old, pregnant people or those with back or neck issues. If you're hoping to explore in the water, consider the company's four-hour snorkeling tour.

The enchanting island of Kauai is a tropical paradise for nature lovers. With an awe-inspiring mix of valleys, rivers, and rainforests, Kauai shore excursions are perfect for nature-loving adventurers.

And, even though you may only have a day or two to spend here on your cruise, we have some highly recommended Kauai shore excursions that will allow you to make the most of your time on the island.

Make this your one-stop shop for planning your Hawaii cruise vacation! Check out more shore excursions for your other cruise ports: – Big Island Shore Excursions – Honolulu Shore Excursions – Maui Shore Excursions Grab a Cruising Hawaii Guide to get everything you need for your Hawaii cruise planning in one place. Can’t Miss Kauai Shore Excursions

Want to make the most out of your time on Kauai? Here are our short list of can’t miss Kauai shore excursions to add to your bucket list. If you are on Norwegian’s Pride of America then you will be able to stay late on the first day. Perfect for a luau or a sunset sail on the Napali Coast.

  • Napali Coast Tour: Explore one of the island’s most remote and most beautiful landscapes! Our favorite is the snorkel and sail tour , but you can also book a helicopter , airplane , or hiking tour.
  • Mountain Tubing : Enjoy a thrilling tubing adventure around the scenic Lihue Plantation.
  • Waimea Canyon: Visit this lush oasis of valleys on a hiking tour of Waimea Canyon.

Kauai Shore Excursion Tips

If you’re arriving in Kauai on the Norwegian’s Pride of America, you’ll have practically two full days to explore this beautiful island. This gives you plenty of time to take part in multiple excursions and do a late-night excursion like a luau or sunset sail.

Thankfully, ships dock at Nawiliwili Harbor, which is centrally located next to many of Kauai’s top attractions. Click here for directions to Nawiliwili Harbor .

Because you have extra time, Kauai is a great place to do things you can’t do at other ports of call. For example, you can take a full-day tour, stay on land to watch the sunset, or go on a long hiking adventure. You can also go to a luau (the three we recommend are a 10 to 30-minute drive), as they tend to be more traditional and intimate compared to the other islands.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports so you know what to expect at each stop. Some ports are central to a downtown area where you could spend all day ( Kailua Pier ) and others are far from anything you’ll want to do ( Kahului Harbor ).

Kauai shore excursions luau

For travelers who’d rather see the island on their own, we highly recommend booking a rental car for your stay. This will be much cheaper than relying on taxis or Ubers to take you to the different sights. We have a few recommendations for discount rental car companies if you choose to go down this route.

Having a rental car gives you a lot of flexibility – which can be a blessing or a curse! If you need help narrowing down your options of what to do, then check out our Cruising Hawaii Guide for a detailed self-guided itinerary.

There’s a lot to see on the island, but these are a few spots that you won’t want to miss. Click the location name for Google Map directions.

  • Lihue : 5 minutes from the harbor
  • Waimea Canyon : 1 hour from the harbor
  • Poipu on Kauai’s South Shore: 20 minutes from the harbor
  • Hanalei on Kauai’s North Shore: 50 minutes from the harbor

Where to Book Kauai Shore Excursions

Booking kauai shore excursions with the ship.

If you decide to book an excursion, then you have the possibility to do so with the cruise ship. Here are a few benefits of booking a tour with the cruise line:

  • Guaranteed Return: Tours organized by the ship are scheduled to bring you back before departure. While this isn’t a big deal on the first day, it is a nice guarantee if you’re planning to explore the second day.
  • Transportation: These excursions usually include transportation to and from the dock, so there’s no need to worry about arranging your own taxi or ride share.
  • Cost: Kauai excursions aren’t cheap, especially if you book through the cruise line. But since they include transportation and a guaranteed return, we think this extra cost is justifiable!
  • Refunds: The weather and ocean conditions around Kauai can change in an instant. If the ship is not allowed to dock, then they’ll refund the cost of the excursion.
  • Booking Flexibility: Not sure if you want to do an organized tour? Don’t worry! You can book this online before the ship sets sail or once you’re aboard. Just know they can fill up fast through the ship.

Kauai shore excursions lush jungle waterfalls

Booking Kauai Shore Excursions with the Tour Operator

There are some huge benefits to booking your tour directly with the local tour operator on Kauai. However, one of the biggest disadvantages is not having a guaranteed return back to the ship. If you are running late, it is crucial to call the cruise to let them know you’re on your way!

But don’t let the fear of missing the ship deter you! Here are some reasons why we recommend booking with the tour operator:

  • Supporting Local Businesses: Unlike booking a tour with the ship (where the cruise line takes a commission), arranging a tour on land means the company keeps all the profits. This is great for supporting the local community in Kauai!
  • Cost Savings: Tours are generally more affordable when not booked through the middleman. If you are on a budget, then booking with the tour operator is going to be the more affordable option.
  • Availability: Cruise ship tours are limited and can sell out. If your favorite excursion is booked, you can find more tour options on land.
  • Small Groups: These tours usually have much smaller groups than the ones organized by the tour. In our experience, there are usually no more than 12 people on the excursion.
  • Cancellation Policy: One thing to keep in mind is the company’s cancellation policy. Depending on the operator, most tours will allow you to cancel anywhere from 72 to 24 hours in advance.

If you’re traveling with mobility or accessibility needs, rest easy knowing Hawaii has you in mind. We have a complete guide to Hawaii Handicap Accessible Trip Planning so you know what to expect (a whole lot of aloha).

The Best Kauai Shore Excursions

When it comes to the different types of Kauai shore excursions, the options are seemingly endless. To help point you in the right direction, we will be sharing trusted and reputable tour operators, most of whom we’ve been out with ourselves.

Remember, if you’re on Norwegian’s Pride of America, you’ll have two days on Kauai. That means you can take advantage of sunset or late tours on your first day and early morning or all-day tours on your second day.

Click the links below to learn more about the tour and to book directly with the local, Kauai tour operator.

Napali + Ni’ihau Snorkel Tour

Explore two of Kauai’s most sought-after destinations in one day! Your tour starts with a cruise up the striking Napali Coast before making your way to Ni’ihau, the Forbidden Island, a private invite-only island where you’ll stop to go snorkeling just offshore Ni’ihau at a volcanic crater.

You won’t be allowed on the island, but it’s a really cool experience to get close to a place that hasn’t been touched by modern conveniences like power, plumbing, phones, or paved roads.

This tour can only be done if you’re docked on Kauai overnight, as it starts bright and early at 6:00 am. Unfortunately, no transportation is included, so you’ll need to make sure you give yourself at least 30 minutes to make your way there.

Kauai shore excursions Ni'ihau

Napali Coast Sunset and Dinner Cruise

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion (or just celebrating the fact that you’re in Hawaii!), this Napalia Coast sunset cruise is guaranteed to be a memorable experience. On this 3.5-hour journey, you’ll get to soak in the spectacular views while enjoying appetizers, dinner, and drinks.

The boat leaves from Port Allen (30 minutes from the cruise terminal) at 2:30pm, and you’ll be required to arrange your own transportation.

Helicopter Tour of the Napali Coast

Roughly 80% of Kauai is inaccessible by foot or car, leaving stretches of wilderness completely untouched by tourism. You’ll be able to see parts of the island that few tourists ever do on this 1-hour helicopter ride of the Napali Coast !

When you book this private helicopter tour, you can choose whether you want to have the doors on or off (if you’re feeling extra adventurous)! All flights leave from the Lihue Airport, which is just a short 5-minute drive away from the cruise ship harbor.

Kauai shore excursions - Waimea Canyon/Napali coast Helicopter tour

Flight over Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon

Another option to see the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon from the air is by plane. This scenic flight lasts 1-hour and takes you over the iconic cliffs, beaches, and jungles that Kauai is famous for. It’s also more affordable compared to the helicopter tour, as it’s a group flight with up to 6 passengers.

There are multiple tour times to choose from, and all of them leave from the nearby Lihue Airport.

Napali Coast Snorkel and Sail

For a fun family day out, the Napali Coast Snorkel and Sail tour is an awesome way to spend your day on Kauai. Departing from Port Allen, your catamaran will travel up to the Napali Coast where you’ll get to snorkel in the ocean for 50 minutes. After lunch and drinks (which are included), you’ll continue your sailing journey until the early afternoon.

Transportation is not included with this tour so make sure to arrange for a ride ahead of time. Because of the 7:30 am start time, this trip can only be done on the second day if your cruise is docked overnight.

We share the 5 Best Napali Coast boat tours here .

To top it off, you’ll also get to take a riverboat cruise to Fern Grotto, a lava rock cave covered in lush, green ferns!

Private Kauai Island Tours

If you’re cruising with a group or you just want a more personalized experience, there are two private excursions for you to choose from! The first tour explores the west and south coast of Kauai, with stops at Waimea Canyon and Poipu Beach amongst others. The other tour travels to the north and east sides of Kauai to see Opaeka’a Falls, Kilauea Lighthouse, and more.

Both tours last 7 hours and can be booked for up to 7 guests. Pick-up and drop-off can be at the terminal, which makes this the perfect excursion for cruise ship passengers.

Waimea Canyon

This half-day Kauai shore excursion tour picks you up right at the cruise terminal and whisks you away to Waimea Canyon State Park. It’s very similar to the Waimea Canyon excursion offered by NCL’s Pride of America ship but at a much more budget-friendly price!

Kauai shore excursions Waimea Canyon

Kauai Private Hiking Tours

Explore Kauai the way it was meant to be seen – on foot! You get to choose where you want to hike from 4 different routes. Explore the valleys of Koke’e State Park, admire the views from Waimea Canyon, or enjoy the lush landscape on the Kuilau Ridge Trail.

Hikes are with a professional guide and totally customized to your group. Best of all, pick-up is included at the terminal so you can get out in Mother Nature faster!

Wailua River Kayak and Hike to Secret Falls

Can’t decide between hiking or water sports for your Kauai shore excursion? On this guided tour , you can have both! Start with a 2-mile kayak down the Wailua River before hopping off for a moderate 1.5-mile hike. You’ll get to see the beauty of Kauai as well as the stunning 120-foot Uluwehi Falls!

Tours leave from Kapa’a, which is 15 minutes away from the harbor.

Surf Lessons

Perhaps the main item on your Kauai shore excursion’s list is surf lessons. Kauai is a great place to learn how to surf, and we know the best instructors to help you!

Ideal for beginner or intermediate surfers, Kauai Surf School offers private or group lessons. All lessons are 1.5 hours long, which gives you lots of time to hit the waves of Poipu Beach (30 minutes away by car)!

FAQ on Kauai Shore Excursions

Where do cruise ships dock for kauai shore excursions.

Cruise ships arrive at Kauai’s Nawiliwili Harbor, located in the town of Lihue (southeastern coast near the airport).

kauai shore excursions nawiliwili harbor cruise dock

Can I get picked up by taxi, Uber, or Lyft from the dock for my Kauai shore excursions?

Since most of these tours do not include transportation, you will need to take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to the excursion meeting point. You also have the option to rent a car from the Lihue Airport or from a rental car satellite office near the harbor.

We have more detailed information about rental car companies and other transportation options in our Cruising Hawaii Guide .

Do tour operators offer pickup at the dock?

Depending on your excursion, pick up and drop off at the cruise terminal may or may not be offered. If you don’t see this option listed on the website, you can always call the company to confirm.

What should I know about booking tours in Hawaii?

Before you book your excursion on Kauai (or anywhere else in Hawaii, for that matter), keep these tips in mind:

  • It’s customary to tip your tour guides anywhere from $10 to $20 per person. However, this can be more or less depending on the level of service you received.
  • Kauai is the rainiest island in Hawaii, and it’s possible that tours may be canceled due to bad or dangerous weather. Since variable weather is the norm on Kauai, many tours run rain or shine as long as it’s safe. Feel free to call the company or check with your cruise line to confirm if you’re worried about the weather.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure to stock up on anti-nausea medication. This can be helpful on the cruise and on the smaller tour boats if you’re going out on the water!
  • Many tours have age restrictions (usually guests need to be over 5 years old). Double-check this before booking your Kauai shore excursion if you have little ones with you.

OVER 5,000 ADVENTURERS RATE US 5-STARS ON TRIPADVISOR! ★★★★★

Visited Kipu Ranch and did the 3-hour tour with my husband and 11-year-old daughter. We had a blast and very much enjoyed the stories told by our guide, Justin, whenever we stopped along the tour. I would recommend this to anyone, very safe and fun if you follow directions. The banana bread as a snack was homemade and amazing!!

Troy and Giggles were our guides and did an excellent job of showing the group how to drive the UTVs properly over the terrain. They shared some Hawaiian history and pointed out famous movie scenes that were filmed on the ranch, we were also treated to some great views of the island that you wouldn't otherwise see!

What a way to check out the private ranch where a couple of movies were shot. Our tour guides were very informative and funny. The test drive session they gave made us comfortable with the ATVs, which were well maintained and took on the most rugged surfaces with ease. The locations were beautiful!

We LOVED our waterfall tour with Kipu Ranch! Our tour guides were amazing! Loved the stories about the ranch, the movies made there, and the history of the island. Tons of drive time and great trails. Our six person atv was perfect for our family of five! We did this on the last day of our trip and it was the perfect way to finish the trip!

Kauai Rainbow Tours  specializes in personalized, custom tours in one of the most amazing places on earth. Share with me your interests, select options from my tour menu, and I will prepare YOUR tour of our lovely Garden Isle.

I look forward to sharing this beautiful island with you!

Randy Leonard Kauai Rainbow Tours, LLC

Tour Kauai Your Way

Your time here should be as unique as you are. With a small tour company, I can individualize your tour to match your interests and schedule. I create opportunities for you that no other tour company provides, bringing you intimate connections with the island, the culture, the history and the people of Kauai.

Small Groups

Kauai Rainbow Tours is focused on small groups, typically 1-4 people, up to a maximum of 7. Tours start and end at your hotel, condo or rental home. Tour times are customized to your needs as well, ranging from 3 to 8 hours, depending on where you want to go and distances between. Refreshments or meals can also be customized: beverages and snacks, a picnic on the beach, local grinds (food), or a fine dining experience.

Advance Planning

Planning your tour in advance allows for greater possibilities and opportunities. In some cases, weather can play a factor in our plans, and flexibility may be necessary to make the most of your time. Also, please advise me of any special needs or mobility issues in advance so that we can plan appropriately for you.

Tour Suggestions

Here is a sampling of some of the places we can go and things you can experience. Your tour is always flexible as we explore the island.

Kauai has 50 miles of white sand beaches, each with its own distinct personalities and characteristics. We can find you a wonderful snorkeling spot and provide a picnic lunch and beverages. Prefer a secluded spot with endless ocean views? How about a morning beach adventure followed by lunch at an island restaurant? Perhaps sink your toes into the sand as you watch the sun set into the Pacific with a glass of wine in hand. Mix or match. We'll set up the perfect beach experience for you.

Canyon & Rain Forest

Take in the extraordinary views of Waimea Canyon, the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” with its dramatic red mountain ranges and stunning waterfalls. Continue onto Kauai’s rainforest at 4,400 foot elevation, culminating in the breathtaking Kalalau Lookout.

Kauai has a rich culture and history that can be experienced in a multitude of ways, from a tour of Kauai Museum, driving through actual sugar plantation “camps,” taking a peek at a now-defunct sugar mill, strolling through Koloa town, where the first successful sugar plantation was founded, art walks through various towns. Meet with local musicians, as available.

Kauai is nicknamed “The Garden Island” for good reason. Tour nationally-renowned botanical gardens, including one that was architecturally designed and has been the backdrop for many movies. There you can learn the history of plants that were brought by Polynesians by canoe more than a thousand years ago.

Kauai Products

Experience Kauai-made products including a chocolate factory, the largest coffee plantation in the United States, iconic Kauai dirt-dyed T-shirts, a microbrewery, gourmet salts, a cookie factory, pie baker and the manufacturer of specialty jams, jellies and other goodies from the lilikoi or passion fruit.

Sightseeing

We’ll take you to popular sights, such as the Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau Lookout, Tunnel of Trees, Menehune Fishpond and Hanalei Bay. Along the way we’ll teach you about island culture and history. We’ll also take you to a few special places known only to island locals.

(Some offerings are dependent upon weather and availability.)

PRICING & PAYMENTS

Pricing begins at $70 per hour for 1 to 4 people; $100 per hour for 5 to 7 people.

You'll enjoy the island in the comfort of an all-wheel drive Subaru. We can conveniently pick you up at your accomodations, and drop you off wherever you wish at the end of your tour. Amenities such as a special occasion lei greeting, picnic lunch or beach chairs and towels are are available for an additional fee.

Payment is easy and convenient: Cash, credit card or Venmo.

SO MANY BEAUTIFUL SIGHTS

Our day with Randy was amazing! He is very knowledgeable of the island and its history. So many beautiful sights. We cannot wait to tour with him again.

Julia, March 9, 2021

AMAZING DAY!

Don and I had Randy for our day on Kauai. It truly was a fantastic day. Randy met us at our cruise ship, right on time and even had a welcome gift for us. His knowledge of the island is only surpassed by his passion to share information on such a beautiful island. During our reservation process he asked what we were interested in and he delivered. He also had extra stops planned out if we were interested. Even though he kind of had a day planned he made it clear that this was our time and if we wanted to do anything else we were able. If you are heading to Kauai, either for a limited day stop from a cruise ship of you are there for several days please connect with Randy.

Brian Davis , October 5, 2019

What a wonderful tour we had - 5 hours of immersion into the beauty of Kauai. We were guided by the expert guidance of Randy through Waimea Canyon, Hanapepe, Poipu, and then another brief tour to the north. Fantastic! You couldn't ask for a better tour or guide.

Tuomo Tolvanen, September 2, 2019

RARE & WONDERFUL

We feel so lucky we found randy!! He is a naturally caring person and knows all the great spots on the island. Waimea canyon in late afternoon was incredible. Randy also picked us up at 5am so we could hike up the sleeping giant to watch the sunrise. We also hiked the Kalalau trail to the end camped one night and hiked back. Randy also dropped us off at 6 am. My daughter hiked faster than me so she made it back first. Randy waited with her for me. (Who does that?) Randy is a rock star and we feel lucky to have met him.

Jeff Smith, August 26, 2019

I highly recommend Randy and his tours to visiting friends and family. Randy is a rare and wonderful person, and you'd be lucky to spend the day with him as your guide.

Best Scenic Driving Tours in Kauai

Close your eyes. Picture your dream of Hawaii. What do you see? If you envision lush green fields, wild fruits, towering waterfall-covered mountains, and bountiful white sand beaches, then you are seeing Kauai.

Kauai is known as The Garden Isle. It’s the wettest, a lushest and most verdant island in the state of Hawaii. That’s because it’s a central dormant volcano, Mount Waialeale, which is the rainiest place on earth. Its crater is lovingly referred to as The Blue Hole, and all that rainwater carves its way back to the ocean via Hawaii’s only navigable rivers.

Add tropical heat to all that moisture, and you have a recipe for life; lush, ever-growing life as far as the eye can see. But for all its beauty, Kauai lacks in urbanization. You won’t find any semblance of the city on Hawaii’s westernmost touristed island. The island’s government has even outlawed the construction of buildings taller than a palm tree, so you’d be hard-pressed to find a three-story structure.

This is the island for the outdoor lover and the relaxer. It’s the kind of island that falls asleep early to rise with the sun (and the crowing feral roosters) to challenge the island’s indomitable landscapes. It’s the island for those seeking solitude in a remote paradise far from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

You can see a lot of the island from your car, and you’ll find scenic landscapes in every direction. As you drive around the island, notice that each side -- north, east, south, and west -- has its own climate and landscape. It’s awe-inspiring to see just how much nature can be packed on such a small island, and it’s all waiting for you to explore. Here are Kauai’s six best scenic drives.

The towering trees that line this road are eucalyptus. Yes, the same eucalyptus trees that koalas feed off of in Australia. If you stop to take a picture of the Hall of Trees, take some time to appreciate the scent of the fragrant leaves.

The northern end of Maluhia Road takes you through a towering tree tunnel, and the trees don’t look like they belong on the tropical island. For a moment, you may feel like you’re in England heading down a long driveway leading to a castle. And the trees bending over the road to make a perfect and massive hallway that will take your breath away.

The tunnel doesn’t last all that long, maybe a third of a mile, but it’s long enough to get lost in its beauty. At one point, you’ll be able to look both backward and forward to see nothing but a tree tunnel. It can feel like a portal to another world.

When you burst out onto the other side, the trees will clear to unveil evergreen pastures. Horses roam these fields, and the area is smattered with much more tropical-looking trees. You’ll be instantly whisked back to Kauai.

And just a little further down the road, you’ll arrive at the historic town of Koloa. This is where they make the island’s only spirit -- Koloa Rum -- and it’s a great place to stop for a snack. The town’s grocery store, Sueoka’s Market, sells box lunches, and you’ll find a charming little ice cream shop right next door. Have a tasty treat while you peruse the small town’s little shops to cap off the drive.

Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay

You’ll gaze upon the valley from up on high. Fields of taro span to the foot of massive inland mountains that are covered in waterfalls. The Hanalei River winds its way to the ocean past the small town of the same name. And the half-moon bay is accentuated by a stunning streak of white sand that sits in stark contrast to the unbelievably blue water of the bay.

As you descend the switchbacks down the cliffside, it feels like you’re entering another world. The air gets hotter and more humid. The landscape changes from dense forest to clear, open fields. A winding river appears. And, at the very bottom of the road, you’ll be presented with the north shore’s first one-lane bridge. Here’s how it works:

Drive slowly. If nobody is coming the other way, cross the bridge. If someone is coming the other way, stop on your side of the bridge off to the right side of the road to allow traffic to pass. Allow five cars to pass, and then it is your turn. It’s a local courtesy to allow five cars to pass before the other side gets their go.

After the one-lane bridge, the road hugs the Hanalei River. The river feeds the fields of taro to the south, and you may see a few stand-up paddleboarders on the slow-moving water. And you’ll get to marvel at the hibiscus flowers floating in the water. Each bloom only opens for a day before dropping into the slow current of the river.

The road will wind its way past high-end restaurants before it enters the small town of Hanalei. You’ll be shocked at all the high-end stores in this remote part of America. You may even run into a celebrity if you grab a drink at the Tahiti Nui, Hanalei’s oldest bar.

And it’s a special treat to drive down to Hanalei Beach . The white sand is inviting, and then you’ll be surrounded by towering waterfall-covered mountains. Take a moment to look at the mountainous landscape around you, and you might be able to make out the outline of a sleeping dragon. That’s Puff the Magic Dragon. He lives down by the sea in a town called Hanalei.

Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon

Simply take Kauai’s highway west towards the town of Waimea. Just past the Big Save grocery store, you’ll want to take a right up Waimea Canyon Drive. The road will switchback up a steep hillside to give you breathtaking views of the town below, and, for some reason, the ocean looks even bluer here on the west coast.

Fight the urge to stop for a picture on these switchbacks because the views are about to get a lot more beautiful. if you can believe it. The road will finally get to the top of the hill, and you’ll drive alongside a cascading waterfall carved into the tiered red dirt.

There will be one intersection. Make sure to stay right to keep climbing in elevation. Soon, the canyon will begin to emerge on your right. Continue to fight the urge to stop. The big viewpoints are just up ahead.

There are two main viewpoints on the Waimea Canyon Road. Each viewpoint has a parking lot and facilities. You’ll also find plenty of tourists at each location, but this shouldn’t dissuade you from making a pit stop.

The canyon is absolutely breathtaking. Your mind has a difficult time understanding the depths of this phenomenon. It almost looks fake. And the colors of the canyon really pop. Stark red dirt sits in contrast to the lush greens of trees and bushes. Minerals burst through the ground to give the canyon oranges and purples, as well. And off in the distance, waterfalls pour hundreds of feet into oblivion.

Keep driving up Waimea Canyon Road to find the second well-signposted viewpoint. Along the way, the canyon will continue to reveal itself. At times, you’ll be driving right on the edge of the canyon itself, but fight the urge to stop the car to have a look. Always pull off to the side of the road responsibly and then peer into the canyon on foot.

Kalalau Valley Lookout

Kalalau Valley Lookout

There are three ways to get to the valley. First, you can take a boat, but the valley’s beach is often violent as there is no protective reef or bay. Second, you can take a helicopter down to the valley floor, but the helipad is usually reserved for rescues and law enforcement. Lastly, and most commonly, you can hike to the valley. The trailhead can be found 11 miles north of Kalalau Valley at Ke’e Beach . Hikers must ascend and descend each and every cathedral cliff of the coast and traverse “crawler’s ledge” to enter this beautiful and remote valley.

From a distance, the Na Pali Coast looks like the massive talons of an island-sized dragon, and each of the talons reaches out into the ocean to create these cathedral cliffs. The cliffs create valleys, and the cliffs themselves are covered in crags, vegetation, and waterfalls.

But there’s good news -- you don’t have to boat, helicopter or hike to the valley to see its beauty. You can drive to the Kalalau Lookout at the very end of the Waimea Canyon Road.

The drive will take you past Waimea Canyon and through a small “town” known as Kokee. At 3,000 feet of elevation, Kokee can be chilly, so you might want to pack something warm to wear. Kokee is essentially a restaurant, open fields, tent camping sites and a collection of cabins. And the cabins can be reserved on the cheap with a two-night minimum stay.

Feel free to stop in Kokee to smell the abundant yellow ginger that wafts on the air. Continue your drive out of Kokee up more switchbacks. The road will narrow, and you’ll finally get to a sign that says Kalalau Valley Lookout near an observatory. Ignore this first lookout. Continue to drive.

Drive until the road completely ends. There will be no signs, but this is the bigger and better Kalalau Valley Lookout. You’ll walk up a small hill to a concrete lookout with railings, but the real thrill and the real views are on the valley’s edge. Just take extreme caution when walking up to the edge of the valley. It’s thousands of feet to the floor below.

Colors seem to be more vibrant in the valley. The blues are electric, the greens seem to glow and the red dirt looks like it’s been painted with a brush. The craggy valley walls are massive, the beach is a slash of white and the ocean shimmers in the distance. This, right here, could be the most impressive lookout in all of Hawaii. Just make sure to drive up here when it’s clear. You won’t be able to see 3,000 feet to the valley floor if there’s fog.

Polihale Beach

Polihale Beach

Take Kauai’s main highway south out of Lihue, do not turn down the Hall of Trees and stay on the road as it bends to the west. Stop in the town of Waimea at the Ishihara Market. Walk to the back of the market where you’ll find a deli and the island’s most delicious poke. You’ll have your choice as the deli preps a variety of poke daily, and you can’t go wrong. Order up some fresh seafood and save it for the beach.

Continue on the highway west out of town. The road will hug the ocean before turning back north along the west coast. Eventually, the road will run out of pavement and you’ll have to drive on a washboard dirt road for a few miles. Take it slow. Your rental car should make it.

The dirt road will run alongside massive open farm fields with impossibly green crops. Off in the distance, you’ll begin to make out the southernmost cathedral cliff of the Na Pali Coast. Just behind that cliff sits the most beautiful place in all of Hawaii -- Kalalau Valley.

Keep driving on the dirt road until you come upon a massive monkeypod tree. It’s the first giant tree you’ll encounter here on the dry west coast. Under its canopy is a sign welcoming you to Polihale Beach Park. From here, you have two choices.

You can drive up the sandy hill to the beach park’s first pavilion, or you can continue down the dirt road where road conditions get worse. You’ll find more pullouts down the dirt road with each leading to another covered pavilion. These pavilions can be reserved and rented for the night.

The pavilions sit on hills that overlook the beach. You’ll have to climb down a steep dune to the water, and you may notice some tire tracks on the sand. You’re legally allowed to drive four-wheel-drive vehicles on the beach. If you’ve rented a 4WD vehicle, then let a little air out of your tires before hitting the sand. Full tires may spin in the soft white sand without traction.

The water here is crystal clear and the waves are huge. Look carefully into the oncoming waves to see dolphins, turtles and monk seals riding the surf. And this beach is absolutely perfect for whale watching between the months of January and March. You might even be lucky enough to see a rare instance of interspecies play where spinner dolphins swim onto the snouts of humpback whales only to be thrown into the air. And spinner dolphins always spin like footballs out of the water.

Take extreme caution when swimming at Polihale. There are no lifeguards, you’re miles from the nearest town and the surf can be violent. Carefully watch the waves before getting in. You may notice that they are breaking sideways into each other. This is a side current that can turn into a rip current. You can also fall victim to the undertow. It’s best to stay out of the water altogether, but, if you can’t help yourself, stay in the shallows.

Take out your poke from Ishihara Market and enjoy the sun setting over the towering island of Niihau off in the distance. Just drive back slowly. The dirt road becomes covered in nocturnal frogs after dark.

Ke’e Beach

Ke’e Beach

Take the Kuhio Highway north out of Lihue past Princeville. Descend the cliff to Hanalei Bay and drive past the town. You’ll hit another one-land bridge as the road hugs the western side of the bay.

As you leave Hanalei, you’ll enter another world. The road hugs cliff edges take you past remote beaches and all the houses out here are built on stilts. You’ll drive over a series of one-lane bridges and each takes you over yet another stream pouring into the Pacific.

There’s no mistaking the landscape here at the end of the road. You are deep in the heart of a rainforest. When the canopy breaks, you can look inland to see towering waterfall-covered mountains as the road hugs yet another white sand beach.

You’ll eventually hit a hard corner. A mountain stream will pour over the road and you’ll have to slow down to cross the water. That’s when the first north shore cave will present itself. These caves are filled with water and seemingly go on forever. It’s a haunting place to take a picture.

You’ll pass yet another cave before the landscape opens up a bit. You’ll be shocked to find a farm so far away from civilization, but that farm is telling you that you’re close to the end of the road. The road will then dip under the canopy of a thick rainforest before ending at Ke’e Beach .

There is a small parking lot here at the end of the road, and you’ll want to get here early in the morning to secure a spot. On the southern side of the parking lot, you’ll see the trailhead to Kalalau Valley which sits 11 miles down the coast. Continue walking towards the lifeguard tower to the beach, and the beach is absolutely stunning.

The jungle seems to crawl right out into the ocean here at Ke’e Beach. Feral chickens peck at fallen coconuts with their chicks right on the sand. And the beach is pressed up against a massive cathedral cliff. That cliff side gives a sunset picture from Ke’e Beach some impressive scale.

There’s a protective reef about 75 yards into the water, but the ocean can get up and over the reef when the surf is violent. If the water is calm, snorkel out to the reef to see an abundance of tropical fish.

If you’re feeling up to it, like the first mile of the Kalalau Trail. You’ll ascend the first cathedral cliff of the Na Pali Coast. At the top of the cliff, you’ll be able to see down the indomitable coast to make out each and every cathedral cliff. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, and it’s the best way to see the Na Pali Coast on land. You’ll also get beautiful views of Ke’e Beach below.

Kayaking Kauai: Paddling the Garden Island of Hawaii

T he island of Kauai is the only place in the gorgeous state of Hawaii that has navigable rivers besides the Wailuku River in Hilo on the Big Island . In open water, a paddle along the rugged and lush background provides the perfect setting for a day at sea. Turtles, dolphins, and whales may swim alongside you. On land, you have more activities than you can fit on a vacation but having a truly Hawaiian experience may make you want to move here. Kayaking around Kauai is a unique adventure and something to be added to your Kauai vacation!

In this guide to kayaking around Kauai, keep in mind that the rivers and bays can also be wonderful places for stand up paddling (SUP). We’ve even seen people SUP surf on the eastern shore, so have fun with it! If we didn’t include your favorite spot for kayaking on Kauai, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to share from others too!

Safety Note: the Island of Kauai is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There are remarkably strong and unpredictable currents. Only experienced kayakers with the appropriate sea kayak and safety gear should be paddling in the open water. When in doubt, sit it out!

Easy Kayaking Spots in Kauai

With so many activities on the Island of Kauai geared toward tourists, there are tons of spaces to experience a leisure paddle. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate kayaker you won’t have any issues finding a place to paddle on an island full of lush rainforest and beautiful beaches. While the paddling in Hawaii may look similar to kayaking in South Florida , the reefs and rivers are VERY different and extra beautiful in their own ways.

Anahola Beach Park

Anahola Beach Park is another gorgeous spot for kayaking in Kauai. The park is located on the east side of the island and offers beautiful views of the ocean. With a reef protecting the bay this is a great place to explore calm waters and jump in for a snorkel. Paddling will allow you to explore the hidden coves and surrounding beaches. There are also several hiking trails nearby if you want to explore the area further.

Where to launch: Anahola Beach Park Anahola, HI 96703 (there are several beach parking areas to launch from)

Huleia River in Lihue (Nawiliwili)

Huleia River is an off-the-beaten-path just outside the Huleia Wildlife Refuge. Located on the island’s eastern portion it’s a popular route for paddlers wanting to experience the natural beauty of Hawaii on the water. Birdwatchers will enjoy the Menehune Fish ponds, a haven for exotic birds.

Where to launch: Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor Nawiliwili, HI 96766

Wailua River in Kapa’a

The opportunity to float past the thick rainforests of Kauai creates a memorable experience. The Wailua River is the island’s longest river starting at Mount Waialeale. The calm waters provide a great paddle for beginner kayakers and take you to the 100-foot Uluwehi Falls.  Paddling Magazine created a detailed post on your options in Wailua River.

The most popular attraction on the Wailua River is Fern Grotto, a natural lave rock formation that has hanging ferns and lush tropical foliage, watered and cooled by the nearby waterfall. If you kayak here, don’t be surprised if there are tons of tourists as it is a tourist attraction that can be easily accessed by a short boat trip. If you’re staying at the Kauai Shores Hotel or anywhere in Kapa’a, this is easy to get to!

Where to launch

  • Wailua River Marina 3-5971 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaʻa, HI 96746
  • Wailua State Park Boat Ramp 161 Wailua Rd, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

Experienced Kayak Spots on Kauai

The Na Pali Coast and South Shore are your best options if you are looking for a challenging open sea paddle. The weather and surf conditions can change quickly and can prove difficult for even the most season paddlers, especially on the long one-day Na Pali Coast trip. Treat kayaking Kauai on the open water as a dangerous paddling area even when it looks wonderfully calm. Similar to kayaking in the San Juan Islands of Puget Sound , there are strong currents and the proper gear, both proper boat and safety gear, is necessary.

Poipu Beach, South Shore

Poipu Beach is filled with marine life such as turtles. Kauai’s South Shore is a contrast in terms of weather, giving drier conditions on land. A paddle through Poipu Beach allows exploration of sea caves and a dramatic perspective of the cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean. Continue east from Poipu for a long sea kayak trip to Ezra’s Beach at the Makauwahi Cave Preserve. It’s amazing!

Where to launch:

  • Poipu Beach Park , Koloa, HI
  • Shipwrech Beach at Ainako Street Parking, Koloa, HI just past the Grand Hyatt

Lawai Bay, South Shore

Lawai Bay is a small inlet just west of the Allerton Gardens and has great waters for swimming but getting there can prove challenging. The area is home to mostly private property and the best access seems to be by a paddle. Launching from Kukuiʻula Harbor Beach a mile away you’ll be facing open sea. Check surf and weather conditions if you are going out for a paddle.

To the west of the cove if you launch from the Small Boat Harbor is the Spouting Horn and to the east heads towards Lawai Beach.

Where to launch: Kukuiʻula Harbor Beach Koloa, HI 96756

Na Pali Coast

The Napali Coast State Wilderness Park is on the northwest side of Kauai. Known for its dramatic sea cliffs, steep, narrow valleys, and cascading waterfalls this area is rugged. Exploring the 17-mile coast is no easy feat but is considered one of the most rewarding kayak experiences in the entire state of Hawaii. We’ve also explored on foot, hiking the Kalalau Trail and doing a doors-off helicopter tour around Kauai .

Expect sea sickness, large waves, and difficult wind conditions, and be prepared for a rough 12-14 hour day of intermittent paddling if you’re looking to navigate a solid portion of the Na Pali Coast. You’re go-to outfitter will likely be Napali Kayak Tours as it’s not recommended to tackle this paddling journey around Kauai on your own.

Where to launch: Napali Kayak Tours OR 5-5075 Kuhio Hwy , Hanalei, HI 96714

Kipu Kai Beach

Kipu Kai Beach is a large cove on the southeastern coast of Kauai. Tucked in between two ridges that drop straight into the ocean, access is all cut off by land. Most folks explore by private helicopter tours but those willing to paddle out, they’ll have a remote, sandy, Hawaiian paradise all to themselves.

Where to launch: Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbo r Nawiliwili, HI 96766

State Park Kayaking Spots in Kauai

Kauai also known as the Garden Island has a rich biodiversity. Nature lovers and outdoor recreationists will have a large playground for their next adventure. The state park system is well developed and does a fantastic job protecting the rare beauty of Kauai.

Nu’alolo Kai State Park

Once a fishing village Nu’alolo Kai is now a state park. Nu’alolo Kai State Park is one of the most scenic coastlines in the state and is surrounded by a large barrier reef, perfect for water enthusiasts. The catch to getting here… You’ll have to paddle the Na Pali Coast which can be a challenging 2-3 hour paddle.  Once here you’ll enjoy archeological sites, native monk seals (they’re mean, do NOT approach) and breathtaking scenery.

Polihale State Park

Polihale State Park is located on the west side of Kauai and is perfect for a paddle. The park offers stunning views of the ocean, as well as the nearby mountains. The park receives much fewer visitors than others and is a bit remote. Adventurers will be rewarded with a beach characterized by large sand dunes and the dramatic background of rugged green scenery. For a paddle in the area check out Napali Kayak .

Haena State Park

Haena State Park is tucked away on the north shore of Kauai. Also, known as the “end of the road,” this remote park provides tons of adventure with beaches, trails, and sea caves. This trip can be combined with the long-grueling Na Pali Coast trail (the Kalalau Trail as mentioned above) should you wish for the ultimate challenge. You MUST have reservations for accessing Haena State Park on land. MAKE RESERVATIONS HERE

If you want to paddle into Haena State Park, you can launch from Haena Beach Park and head west. Going around the points is a challenging paddle and you need to keep safety in mind AT ALL TIMES. PS: parking at Haena Beach Park can be difficult if you’re not there first thing in the morning.

Where to launch: Haena Beach Park HI-560, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

Hanalei Bay, Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge

Kayaking in Hanalei Bay is a must-do while in Kauai. The bay is located on the north shore of the island and is well known for its beauty. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the mountains and coastline as they paddle around the bay. There are also several beaches to explore and plenty of opportunities to see wildlife. Check out local outfitter Kayak Hanalei for detailed information on the area.

Where to launch: Kayak Hanalei or 5-5070A, Kuhio Hwy , Hanalei, HI 96714

When to Visit Kauai

The most recommended time to visit Kauai is in the fall and spring when the weather is most pleasant and the state isn’t completely packed with tourists. The rainy season generally runs from November to March, with January being the wettest.

Summer events in Kauai include the Koloa Plantation Days Celebration, the Kauai Marathon, and Kauai Mokihana Festival. But really, is there ever a bad time to find yourself on Kauai? Especially if you’re going to be kayaking and exploring the mountains, Kauai is always amazing.

Need to Know for Visiting Kauai

With so much to do you really need a week or two on the island. It’s best to rent a car and do so well in advance. Eat local, the food scene is great. Be sure to be safe and swim on beaches with lifeguards, the water conditions can be rough. If you’re going to do any of the challenging, open sea kayaking, get a reputable outfitter. We recommend a few above. Most importantly, get out there and take the opportunity to paddle this beautiful state.

We love talking about Hawaii and sharing all of our experiences. If you have any questions about visiting Kauai , Maui, Oahu , Molokai or the Big Island , please let us know. By the end of 2023 we’ll have been to them all and are happy to share. Leave a comment or send us a note if you need any help planning an amazing adventure!

“When it comes to setting, this was one of the most stunning hotels I've stayed in. You can't beat its position on beautiful Hanalei Bay, overlooking Makana Mountain and the start of the Na Pali Coast. It's a wellness-focused hotel, and the spa, gym, and wellness programming are top notch. (But that doesn't mean you can't indulge in some Mai Tais; we even learned a recipe we now use at home.) 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is extremely romantic — you'll wake up to rainbows most mornings — and it's where my fiancé and I chose to celebrate our engagement. Know Before You Go

Consider renting a car.

Kauai is one of the more remote Hawaiian islands, so the easiest way to get around is with your own car. Rideshare and taxis work too, but they can be expensive and not as plentiful as on the mainland. Some hotels run shuttles on a schedule, and there is also a public bus system.

Understand the different regions of Kauai before booking accommodations

Different regions of Kauai offer different experiences, so take this into account before booking and consider splitting your time between several accommodations if you want a varied experience. The main regions with accommodations are the North Shore (Princeville, Hanalei), east coast (more densely populated), and South Shore (home to family-friendly beaches and more affordable vacation lodgings).

Expect precipitation

Kauai is generally warm and tropical year round, with substantial rain. The dry season runs from April to October, and the months between November and March are considered the wet months. December and January — popular months for travel from the mainland — see the most rain.

The hotels on this list were chosen based on her expertise and research as well as the firsthand accounts of Travel + Leisure editors and other contributors. Several of these hotels have also been voted into their respective categories in the World’s Best Awards by T+L readers. All of our hotel recommendations also align with our T+L Hotel Values .
